General Accountability
The Director, Commercialization is accountable for developing and directing CCR’s commercialization
programs and services, promoting economic prosperity through the development and successful
transfer of new technology and innovation into the marketplace with the objective to drive the
commercialization of academic based intellectual property in alignment with the needs of the market.
Responsible for directing the development of viable opportunities in partnership with key networks to
generate outcomes consistent with the strategic intent of CCR and the NCE CECR program.
Provides strategic interpretation and tactical guidance to the Commercialization Team on individual
programs and projects. Directors also manage their own programs or projects and are responsible for
their outcomes (deliverables).
Manages the programs and services, interface with other OCE divisions and will participate in OCE
management and decision-making bodies.
Key Job Responsibilities
The Director, Commercialization for the Centre for Commercialization of Research will be responsible
for leadership and program delivery, including, but not limited to:
Leadership
Manages direct reports and supervises activities of OCE staff working in the Accelerator Centre,
providing coaching and guidance in establishing goals, measuring progress and providing feedback.
Monitors and oversees the performance of key projects and programs, providing leadership and
guidance within the ACE and the Waterloo region on behalf of the MD.
Actively participates in relevant business associations, technical committees and professional
organizations to promote and grow OCE’s network.
Leads key program activities (e.g. committees of volunteer groups (e.g. advisory or review
committees) or serving on corporate committees (e.g. Research, Commercialization, and /or Talent
Committees), making proposal presentations to investment and other committees, conducting
project technical and business-case reviews, etc.)
Tracks developments and keeps up-to-date on the latest technological and business developments
in their field/sector; including current knowledge of sector specific industry news, regulations and
contacts.
Provides advice and support to other OCE service groups, e.g. Marketing/Communication and
Finance groups on key initiatives.
Program Delivery
Engages with developing networks and facilitates the formation of effective partnerships between
research, government, industry and the investment community to identify trends and opportunities.
Manages a client portfolio consisting of a number of projects that have a common aspect (e.g.
geographic, technical, sectoral domain, etc) or a more complex program.
2. Manages opportunities for alignment of academic, government and industry networks to build
synergy, generate opportunities and create partnerships both nationally and internationally.
Leads dialogue on opportunities for commercialization of research and consequently requirements
for people with appropriate job skills.
Oversees workshops involving the best and brightest in the industry, academic and government to
nurture talent.
Directs efforts to establish a presence within early stage commercialization community, technology
transfer offices, investment organizations and research offices within industry.
Leads efforts to leverage OCE network to identify trends and opportunities.

Educational/Technical Requirements
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Applied Science, Business, or equivalent, and 10 years
of post-grad industrial experience
Superior project management skills
Highly developed interpretive and analytical skills and capabilities in: MS Word, PowerPoint and
Excel; MS Project Management
Familiar with the “language” and terminology of industry, finance, government and the academic
community
Personal Requirements
