Fascinated with how flawlessly spiderman crawls the walls with his sticky web, Harry Coumnas decided to create something that would allow humans to do the same. It took him over five years closely working with his scientist friends to create a material that enables humans to ascend a vertical wall. After an extensive research, Harry with his team, inspired by the sticky toes of geckos, created hand-sized silicone pads with tiny ridges which work well with smooth surfaces. Together, they also built a harness with each pad supporting the weight of a foot to rest.

Harry Coumnas Has Created Hand-Sized Silicone Pads That Would Allow You to Crawl the Walls like Spiderman

That Would Allow You to Crawl the Walls like
Spiderman
Harry Coumnas has been a fan of superheroes since he was a
small kid. His favorite is the spiderman known for his wall-
crawling powers. Fascinated with how flawlessly spiderman crawls
the walls with his sticky web, Harry decided to create something
that would allow humans to do the same. It took him over five
years closely working with his scientist friends to create a material
that enables humans to ascend a vertical wall. After an extensive
research, Harry with his team, inspired by the sticky toes of
geckos, created hand-sized silicone pads with tiny ridges which
work well with smooth surfaces. Together, they also built a
harness with each pad supporting the weight of a foot to rest.
Talking in detail about the research and countless experiments it
took Harry Coumnas and his team to create the ideal material for
crawling, he said, “First we used magnetic boots, suction cups, but
failed. Our previous attempts to copy gecko feet also did not
work. Geckos, and spiders, stick to walls as the tiny hooks and
hair together takes advantage of the forces that dominate the
atomic-scale world”. He further added, “By using the silicone
pads created by me and my team, humans can climb walls and
stay on ceilings for as long as they want. However, these only
work well under idealistic conditions, such as flat, smooth
surfaces with no curves or defects. Besides that, they allow you to
crawl across ceilings strong enough to bear any weight.”
2. Harry Coumnas is glad that after his invention, donning a pair of
gecko-tape gloves and scale walls like Spider-Man might not be
fantasy anymore for those who wanted to climb like spiderman.
Harry’s next mission is to develop the technology that would
allow climbers to move faster and more smoothly.
