2. Cinematography
Throughout the music video, there was frequent pop ups of the female character
within the music video. The song was based on the female due to the lyrics
mentioning “babe” which is referred as the female. Quite often, the cuts were medium
close ups which allowed viewers to identify the location of where she is and her
facial expressions. Sometimes there would be close up shots of her face especially
when she was crying to make viewers give empathy for her sorrowful behaviour. The
cuts then transitioned over to the television which looked as if she was watching an
old video of the group. Whilst she was watching the video she did seem quite
emotional, I think that this was due to her missing the band perhaps whilst looking
at memorable times. When the shots were on the TV it was a close up of the
television screen to allow viewers to easily see what is happening in the video.
At the beginning of the music video when the female character had got out of the
water, camera movement was used (tracking shot). The camera had followed her into
her home to show that she is a successful and wealthy individual who has a luxurious
pool. When the female gets out the pool, the male gaze is involved. She appears to
be sexualised in a way because she is wearing minimal clothing due to wearing a
swim suit and comes out wet. A pan movement had been used once she had stood out of
the pool which starts from her legs and gradually moves upwards to display her body.
4. Editing
The pace of the cuts depended on the pace of the song. During faster parts
of the song, the cuts would be rapid by following against the beat. When
the song began to become slower, the cuts were allowed for a much longer
period of time to allow viewers to see some action without having to keep
track if there was only fast paced cuts used. This enabled them to
understand the music video well.
At the beginning of the music video, there was a use of slow motion of when
the female character was getting up out of the pool. Before she was
visually seen, the motion of the water tended to move quite slowly, at
first I thought that this was the water naturally. Afterwards, I see the
females hands, they slowly become raised to the screen which enabled me to
conclude that slow motion was used. This created a slow motion effect of
her getting up and her hair weighing back behind her back.
5. Mise en scene
There are many different aspect within the music video that support the mise en
scene aspect. Firstly, the lady in the music video is seen coming out of a pool and
then transitions into a home which I believe that is hers. I assume that she is
wealthy since she has a pool in her home. Once she gets inside after being in the
pool, she puts on a silk robe which is often seen a appealing due to it luxurious
texture and appearance.
One of the main elements is the TV that was frequently shown, the TV had shown past
videos of the female and the band. Through the facial expressions of the lady, it
looked as if she was missing them or angry maybe because it wasn’t a very positive
look on her face. I could also see some alcohol behind her when she stood up. They
were scattered across her table which could suggest why she came across as quite
upset. However, when she stood up she started to dance. Usually alcohol are one of
the essential prop when having a good time anywhere. This may have changed her mood
which started to change at the ending of the song.
I didn't quite understand why there was raw beef included in the music video and was
fried in a pan. I can only imagine that it was to represent dead meat. Maybe she
felt that the band was gone and there's nothing that she could do about it just like
when animals are killed, there is nothing that can be done about that animal which
started before she started to become happy.
7. Sound
There is a use of diegetic and non diegetic sound. Diegetic sound
had been used at the beginning of the music video when the female
character was in the pool. As she was getting up out of the pool,
diegetic sound of the water was heard. Bearing in mind that the
song hadn’t actually started yet therefore it was clear to
identify. The purpose of this is to create a calm mood to humble
viewers in order to listen to the song appropriately.
Another way that diegetic sound was used is when the camera was
facing the TV of the band, the sound was coming from the television
which offered a taster to viewers of what they were saying and how
they speak whilst non diegetic sound was playing beneath it. This
diegetic sound would go over the soundtrack. The sound track is non
diegetic which makes the music video come across as professional
due to it being edited professionally to then be applied to the
music video.
