ARISTOTLE
• Ancient Greek Philosopher
• First thinker who dabbled into
the complex problematization of
the end goal of life: happiness
• He defined the good as the
ultimate goal of all human
activities, which can guide our
search for truths.
5. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
IN NICOMACHEAN ETHICS, ARISTOTLE STATED
“all human activities aim at some good. every art and human
inquiry,, and similarly every action and pursuit, is thought to
aim at some good; and for this reason the good has been
rightly declared as that at which all things aim” -
Nicomachean ethics 2:2
“...both the many and the cultivated call it happiness, and
suppose that living well and doing well are the same as being
happy” - Nicomachean ethics 1:4
7. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
“now such a thing as a happiness above all else, is held to be, for
this we choose always for itself and never for the sake of
something else, but honor, pleasure, reason, and every virtue we
choose indeed for themselves, but we choose then also for the
sake of happiness, judging that by means of them we shall be
happy. happiness, on the other hand, no one choose for anything
other them itself.” - nicomachean ethics 2:7
“it is the activities that express virtue that control
happiness and the contrary activities that control
its contrary.” - nicomachean ethics 1:10
8. VIRTUE
• Constant practice of the good no matter how difficult
the circumstances may be .
• Is the excellence of character that empowers one to do
and be good.
According to Nicomachean Ethics 2:1, there are two kinds of virtue:
• Intellectual- owes its birth and growth to teaching
(experience & time)
• Moral- result of habit.

9. HAPPINESS AS THE GOAL OF A GOOD LIFE
• In the 18th century, John Stuart Mill introduced the
greatest happiness principle, stating that actions are
right when they maximize overall happiness.
• He emphasized individual happiness and its collective impact on
ethical actions, like mining. Ethical actions benefit the majority
and lead to a good and happy life, a goal pursued throughout
history by various school of thought.

10. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
• belief that everything is made of tiny,
indivisible particles called atoms.
• emphasizes the pursuit of comfort, pleasure,
wealth as the ultimate goals.
5 GOALS OF GOOD LIFE
1.) MATERIALISM
11. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
• Values life’s purpose as seeking pleasure due
to life’s limited nature.
• Epicurus led this philosophy, which rejects the
idea of an afterlife, emphasizing the pursuit of
pleasure.
• Their motto: “ Enjoy life today for there’s no
afterlife.
5 GOALS OF GOOD LIFE
2.) HEDONISM
13. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
• About finding life’s meaning through a
connection with God, often in religious
contexts like in the Philippines, where
happiness is seen in reuniting with God after
this temporary life.
5 GOALS OF GOOD LIFE
4.) THEISM
14. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
• This champions human freedom..
• Allows people by the Enlightenment and inspires
scientists to improve life through technology.
• Today, technology connects us globally, even
altering biology for those who choose, but ethics
must guide these advancements for the greater
good.

WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF A GOOD LIFE?
The ultimate goal of a good life, according to
Aristotle, is not just feeling happy but living
virtously, Pursuing what’s meaningful, and
realizing your full potencial. Its about achieving
human flourishing and fulfillment.
( Boniwell 2000 )

WHAT IS THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN
ACHIEVING GOOD LIFE?
Stutz (2006), adds that a good life means meeting basic
needs and achieving freedom, belonging , and self-
realization. However, technology also alters time and
space; for instance, social media connects people
worldwide instantly. It even let us modify our bodies
through hormones. Deciding which technologies to
embrace while considering ethics and pursuit of a
good life is crucial.
17. SCIENCE,
TECHNOLOGY AND
SOCIETY
Professor Albert Borgmann, author of “ Technology
and Good Life”, discussed these ideas in an interview
at the university of Montana’s Philosophy Program.
• Vergragt (2006), suggests that it can enhance our
well-being without harming the environment/future
generations.
