One of the camera shots used in The Hobbit
opening sequence is a close up. Close ups are used
continuously throughout this opening sequence.
Here a close up is used to show off the sword and
its importance, the sword becomes a recurring
thing in the film so that’s also why it’s shown here
when Bilbo first opens the chest.
Another shot used in the opening scene is a mid-
shot. A mid shot can be used for various things but
here the mid shot is used to show the emotion on
Bilbo’s face after he finds an old picture of himself.
Another camera technique the director used is the
pan/tracking shot. Usually with this type of shot it’s
used to show off an area or as someone is
walking/running, etc. Here in this sequence its used
to show off the map of middle earth before
stopping at Erebor, the director has done this to
show where the start of the story Bilbo is about to
tell takes place. The director then uses a tracking
and a pan shot in the village to show all the people
and how happy they are.
The director then goes on to use an establishing
shot. An establishing shot is used when the director
wants to show an entire building or place, as they
have done here. This shows the viewer’s where the
next part of the story is to take place.
A different technique that is used toward the
middle of the sequence is a two shot. A two shot is
used to enable the viewers to see two of the main

Visual Effects &
Colour Scheme
Throughout this sequence there is a variation of
both high key and low key lighting. The high key
lighting used out of the mountain is effective
because it shows how everything was bright and
happy and going okay through the village in
comparison to the low key lighting in the mountain

between the happiness outside of the mountain to
the darkness inside that was taking over.

Genre
Conventions
The Hobbit is a fantasy film. We can tell this by the
genre of the books that were written before the
films (The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit), by the
different settings in the whole film, the dialogue
and the characters that are included in the films.
Narrative Both diegetic sound and non-diegetic sound is used
in this sequence. Diegetic sound for when the
characters are speaking and doing things and non-
diegetic sound for when Bilbo is speaking over
whilst telling the story.
