Editor's Notes

  1. I have been an online student pursuing my M. Ed. at Grand Canyon University since April, 2014. in that time I have gained real experience in online learning from the student’s perspective. I have been accountable for the continuous and current posting of answers to discussion questions, and to classmates and their posts. I have also completed weekly assignments to complete, essays, power point presentations, or other projects and to properly submit them. I have also just completed the CCSD Alternate Routes to Licensure program and its course Introduction to Blended/Online Teaching. I have current experience in online learning from the perspectives of both student and teacher, and I believe that I am well qualified to be an online or blended classroom teacher.
  2. The first key factor in being a successful online or blended learning teacher is to know the various methods and to select and initiate one. I will initially use the ala carte method that has been successful at the elementary level. I will rely on the support and experience of the CCSD specialists in this area. I will also rely on good communication with my grade level team of teachers to include them in discussions as I plan and move forward. I will also rely on and communicate well with the administration at my school to seek their input and guidance. Finally, I will communicate well with the students and with their families to assure their acceptance and comfort with online and blended learning.
  3. At its core, the goal of online or blended learning is to engage students at their current ability level and to then to help them learn and grow in a time and way unique to them. I will monitor data regarding the ability level of each student to assure competence. In the event a student is not learning as planned and desired, I will coach that student to the extent needed to get them back on track. If necessary, I will ask for assistance from co-teachers and the student’s parents. All of my students can and will learn.
