The students will get to know about the chocolate journey, exploring step by step all the stages of the production process, from the cocoa plantations to the final product on the selves of various shops.
2. How is chocolate made?
Cocoa trees are grown in tropical areas
in South America, Africa and Asia
where the climate is humid and hot. The
cocoa beans can be up to 25cm long.
Each bean contains about 45 white nuts.
Harvesting the beans is a very tough
job. Workers prune the plants to get
the beans.
3. How is chocolate made?
After the harvest the beans are
processed ( fermented) to improve
their taste. Fermentation turns the
beans into cocoa which is covered
with banana leaves. They are left to
ferment for 6 days.
4. How is chocolate made?
Cocoa seeds are then placed in sacks of 70 kilos
each , are evaluated and classified and then are
sold to big chocolate industries through”
buyers- intermediaries”. The sacks are carried
to chocolate factories of the developed world
like the UK.
5. How is chocolate made?
The seeds are cleaned and
roasted at the chocolate
factories. Then, they are ground
to turn into paste, which, when it
gets colder, becomes solid.
6. How is chocolate made?
Chocolate is turned into a creamy
form and is shaped in rolls. Next,
milk is added. Special stirring
machines stir the mixture. The nest
step is the heating- cooling process
where special machines are involved.
The purpose of this process is to
improve the chocolate texture.
7. The mixture is then placed in
shaped containers to get the
desired shape or is used as
coating for cakes or sweets. The
final product is packaged and sent
to the shops (retailers).
