Producing Print Based Media
Visual Language:
Composition
How have you chosen to set out your designs and why?
The layout of my page is simple yet sophisticated, this is because of the way that
each different part of the card has been split up in to different sections, this makes it
easy for the audience to read and keeps them at ease when they are reading the
card whilst cooking which is something that I would like if I was making a recipe from
a card, this shows that I thought of the audience whilst setting up the layout of my
card.
The images on my card are all of a high resolution; this shows professionalism when
looking at my card and also makes it look of a higher quality and more expensive.
To get my images I got them from Google images and got a full size image of the
things that I wanted to be on my cards, this helped me to get high quality images
quickly and easily.
The text which is on my card is a simple font, you can see this from the way the font
is very plain on the back of the card and there isn’t many flicks so it’s easier for the
audience to read.
The text to image ratio is largely taken up by text, this is because on the front of my
card there is text taking up the whole page, and on the back page there is text on
most of it apart from one corner where there is a image of the food, there is also a
big image of food as the background on the back of the card but faded out so that
you can read the text of the top of this. So the text to picture ratio is more text than
images.
I think my card is busy yet simple, I think that the card is simple because a
minimalistic pallet had been used, for example, I only used 3 colours on my card.
The front of my card is busy yet simple, the reasons I feel the card is simple is
because of the fact that the same font has been used all over the front of the card,
saying the same thing but in two different colours, but on the other hand I think the
card looks quite busy because of the kind of font that I have used, for the font on the
front of the card I used ‘impregnable’ from dafont.com, which is quite a fancy font
with a lot of flicks, this is why I feel my card is busy at the same time.
I feel that the back of my card is simple, this is because of the way that everything
has been laid out in to different sections and you can see everything clearly and
again a minimalistic pallet has been used, for example, the colours on the back of
the card are all the same as they are on the front of the card apart from the
background of the card is quite pale as it is a faded out image of the dish then there
is another image of the dish in the corner so that you can see it clearer.
Image Construction
Discuss the contents of your final images and reflect upon decisions made.
Images that I used on my card are from Google images, this is because it was quick
and easy for me to be able to get them and get high quality images of the exact
images I wanted, rather than finding high quality images of things that I didn’t want
from a stock image library. I think that getting my images from Google was a good
idea as it helped me to complete my work better and beat the deadline by a week
and 3 days. Also, because all the images I used where from Google images all my
images are the original images by the original photographer from their blog/website.
I think that the use of colour on my card is good as I have used a minimalistic pallet
for each card that I made, I also made sure that I tried to use colours similar to the
colour, for example on the dessert card the dish was a raspberry and strawberry
sorbet, so for the colours that are being used on the card I used creams, and reds so
that there was a theme running through the cards and a theme between the colours
and the dish.
Discuss the semiotics and connotations created from the content you have
included.
The meaning of my cards it so try and entice the audience in to grabbing a free card
for a delicious, easy to make, home made food.
The message that I would like these cards to get across is the fact that the cards can
be for any occasion as they have different themes and different food, for example,
the strawberry and raspberry sorbet and organic gnocchi salad card will be for the
adults and the chilli and apricot sausage rolls along with the creamy butterfly buns
will be for young children, so there is a good amount of choice for the audience
which I think I got across well.
To get that idea across I also used some children’s colours, adult ones and
sophisticated ones, for example, with the strawberry and raspberry sorbet card being
for adults I used sophisticated colours, like deep reds,, this fits in with the colour of
the sorbet as the berries and such will be purple and for the organic gnocchi salad
card I used pale greens to fit the theme of the food being organic and also because
the food is a salad.
For the children’s cards on the creamy butterfly buns, which is obviously for girls
because of the kind of food it is, I used typical girl colours like pinks and purples, and
for the sweet chilli and apricot sausage rolls I was going to use a blue colour but it
didn’t really represent what the food looked like, so I used orange which is also quite
a boyish colour.
I think that the design I used is really good as even though I did the same things, for
example keeping the same font and layout on each card, because of the colours I
have used on the different cards it makes them all look different, so for example
because I used dark reds for the desert card it looks fancy, and because I used pinks
for the creamy butterfly buns card it looks quite girly and child-like.
I think that because of the way that I have done my images on the bottom left hand
side of the page in a circle is also good because it fits both genders and all age
ranges, with it being rounded/a circle people tend to think or I think that it looks
classy and expensive, and if the card is for young children it also helps to make the
card look playful.
Audiences:
Create an audience profile of your chosen demographic
The age that I was going for when I was making my cards was all age groups, that’s
because it’s something for every age to enjoy, this is clearly shown by the way that
two cards have been made for children, the creamy butterfly buns, and there is two
cards that have been made for adults.
The gender for this card is boys and girls, but I’d say maybe more girls than boys,
this is because the strawberry and raspberry dessert card are for women, and the
chilli and apricot sausage roll card is for girls, though the organic gnocchi card could
be for both but more women than men would eat the salad as it might be for women
who are on a diet or just fancy something light to eat.
NRS Social Grading for this card would be higher class, grade B, or C1, this is
because the cards are going to be expensive but nice so that the taste makes up for
it in the long run, this is won’t make lower class people feel left out from having nice
luxurious food and will make grade B people still feel as if they have more money to
get the nice food than others.
How have you constructed your work to appeal to this audience?
I have constructed my work to appeal to the audiences specified by using a range of
different colours but still with a minimalistic pallet for each card depending on the
theme.
To make the theme stay the same apart from the colours on the card I thought I’d do
a image of the dish on the back page taking up the full side but faded out, this made
the card look classy, then after that I put a smaller picture in the bottom left hand
side of the page and put a circle behind the image and created a clipping mask so
that the image turned in to a circle, this made the card not only look interesting for
young children so that the card was for them as well but even more sophisticated for
adults, which I think gave the card more to look at.
To make the card for bot genders I also createdtwo meals for men, one for young
boys and one for adult men and two for female, one for young girls and one for adult
females, this gave me a larger audience which I felt was a really good idea for my
card.
Historical and Cultural Context:
What did you use as your design influences and why were they chosen?
Nothing influenced my work apart from one card that I saw on Google images when
we were asked to create our cards, on the card was a picture of a dish in a shape so
this gave me the idea to put a picture of the dish in a circle on my card so that it was
different instead of just being a square or triangle.
Do vegetarian products have a specific design aesthetic and how does your
project reflect/contrast this? Why?
I don’t really think that vegetarian products do have a certain design aesthetic
because the cards all tend to look really different, apart from somewhere on the card
they always have the logo of the company the food is made by, which is important to
be on a card so that the audience knows who made the food, this could be for
different reasons.
On my card there is a vegetarian society logo on the front of the card, so I think that
this reflects the work of others.
Finished Products:
Does your finished product reflect your initial plans? How? If there are any
differences, describe why changes were made.
My final cards have changed completely compared to what I had planed, on the
planning versions of the cards on the front of the cards I just had the name of the
dish going across the whole page once, whereas on the final cards the name of the
dish has been repeated over and over with a dark colour then a colour that’s slightly
darker so that it stands out a little. I think that doing this made the cards look more
professional and looked as if there was more to it rather than just a bland boring and
simple front cover.
On the back of the cards when I had been planning them the title of the dish has
stayed the same and the title of the dish going horizontally down from that but faded
out.
The back of the card now also has a small circle image of the dish, which wasn’t on
the planning.
Does your finished product match what you were set in the brief? How?
I think that my finished product does match the brief as it says to have a clear
running theme which I have done, it also says to use original idea’s as well which I
have also done.
The brief says to have the company logo on the front of the card which I have done
and fits the brief.
It also says to create vegan or vegetarian meals which I have done also.
How did the use of peer feedback help you in your production?
When I was given my peer feedback there wasn’t really anything that I could do to
improve my card as the feedback that I was given was all positive, baring one part
where the person wrote that the font was hard to see on the back of the card
because of the faded out image, but because the font was already bold I made the
font as big as I could without it looking messy.
Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your final product regarding its
technical and aesthetical qualities.
Strengths:
- Clear running theme through the card.
- High quality images have been used.
- The font is all easy for the reader which will leave them at ease when making
the food.
- The cards theme fits all genders and age groups and has stayed the same all
the way through.
Weaknesses:
- The front of the card might be difficult to see but if the font was smaller it
would be even harder, to make it better I could change the font to one that
isn’t as fancy.
I think that the technical side of my work is quite easy because most of the time I
was just copying and pasting, and adding shapes to my images to create clipping
masks, but I think that’s what the majority of people had done, if we were making
something else then I think I would have been a bit move adventurous with how I did
things, I would use more effects, etc.
On the aesthetical quality side of things I think that the image of the dish that has
been faded out makes the card look more expensive, I also think adding the small
circle image of the dish makes the card stronger as It’s different, one for having it in
a circle and two for having two images of the dish, meaning one faded and one not.
What skills/knowledge have you gained/developed in this project? How could
these be applied in future practice?
During this project I learnt how to make standard rectangle images become different
shapes, in the future I could use this to make what ever I’m making look more
interesting and appealing to the audience.
Production Processes
Do you believe your work is creative and technically competent? Why?
Like I said before I think that the parts of my work that look interesting is the
background page, this is because of the faded out image of the dish and the circular
one on the bottom left hand side of the page.
I think that the title of the dish also looks good because of the way that it’s written
normal across the top left hand side of the back page then faded out horizontally
underneath that.
How effectively did you manage your time?
I think that I managed my time really well as I finished my work a week and 3 days
early, some of the time I also used to improve my card.
If you could repeat the process what would you do differently?
Nothing.
Working to a Brief in the Creative Media Industries
Constraints Experienced:
What constraints did you encounter and how did you consider/avoid them?
Legal Constraints
None.
Regulatory Constraints
Financial Constraints
If I where actually having to make my cards for a client, the financial constraints
might be that I might not have enough money to make the cards, for example getting
them all printed out, and varnishing them.
Management:
How did you work as part of a group?
I leaded the project myself for myself as I was working alone, I felt better working
alone as I could have the card as I wanted without having to put other peoples idea’s
in which maybe weren’t as good.
How important is communication when working in a group?
Very if you are working in a group because you need to be able to communicate to
get things done and bounce ideas off each other.
What have you learnt about working in a group and how will you apply this to
future practice?
Nothing as I worked on my own.
What have you learnt about working in to a brief and how will you apply this to
future practice?
I’ve learnt that working to a brief is very important if you are get a task done to a high
standard with the things needed and still giving me some time to go back and
improve work if I needed to, in the future I will use this in all my briefs as it helped me
meet my deadline early leaving time for improvement

Visual design and audience appeal of recipe cards

  • 1. Evaluation Producing Print Based Media Visual Language: Composition How have you chosen to set out your designs and why? The layout of my page is simple yet sophisticated, this is because of the way that each different part of the card has been split up in to different sections, this makes it easy for the audience to read and keeps them at ease when they are reading the card whilst cooking which is something that I would like if I was making a recipe from a card, this shows that I thought of the audience whilst setting up the layout of my card. The images on my card are all of a high resolution; this shows professionalism when looking at my card and also makes it look of a higher quality and more expensive. To get my images I got them from Google images and got a full size image of the things that I wanted to be on my cards, this helped me to get high quality images quickly and easily. The text which is on my card is a simple font, you can see this from the way the font is very plain on the back of the card and there isn’t many flicks so it’s easier for the audience to read. The text to image ratio is largely taken up by text, this is because on the front of my card there is text taking up the whole page, and on the back page there is text on most of it apart from one corner where there is a image of the food, there is also a big image of food as the background on the back of the card but faded out so that you can read the text of the top of this. So the text to picture ratio is more text than images. I think my card is busy yet simple, I think that the card is simple because a minimalistic pallet had been used, for example, I only used 3 colours on my card. The front of my card is busy yet simple, the reasons I feel the card is simple is because of the fact that the same font has been used all over the front of the card, saying the same thing but in two different colours, but on the other hand I think the card looks quite busy because of the kind of font that I have used, for the font on the front of the card I used ‘impregnable’ from dafont.com, which is quite a fancy font with a lot of flicks, this is why I feel my card is busy at the same time. I feel that the back of my card is simple, this is because of the way that everything has been laid out in to different sections and you can see everything clearly and again a minimalistic pallet has been used, for example, the colours on the back of the card are all the same as they are on the front of the card apart from the background of the card is quite pale as it is a faded out image of the dish then there is another image of the dish in the corner so that you can see it clearer.
  • 2. Image Construction Discuss the contents of your final images and reflect upon decisions made. Images that I used on my card are from Google images, this is because it was quick and easy for me to be able to get them and get high quality images of the exact images I wanted, rather than finding high quality images of things that I didn’t want from a stock image library. I think that getting my images from Google was a good idea as it helped me to complete my work better and beat the deadline by a week and 3 days. Also, because all the images I used where from Google images all my images are the original images by the original photographer from their blog/website. I think that the use of colour on my card is good as I have used a minimalistic pallet for each card that I made, I also made sure that I tried to use colours similar to the colour, for example on the dessert card the dish was a raspberry and strawberry sorbet, so for the colours that are being used on the card I used creams, and reds so that there was a theme running through the cards and a theme between the colours and the dish. Discuss the semiotics and connotations created from the content you have included. The meaning of my cards it so try and entice the audience in to grabbing a free card for a delicious, easy to make, home made food. The message that I would like these cards to get across is the fact that the cards can be for any occasion as they have different themes and different food, for example, the strawberry and raspberry sorbet and organic gnocchi salad card will be for the adults and the chilli and apricot sausage rolls along with the creamy butterfly buns will be for young children, so there is a good amount of choice for the audience which I think I got across well. To get that idea across I also used some children’s colours, adult ones and sophisticated ones, for example, with the strawberry and raspberry sorbet card being for adults I used sophisticated colours, like deep reds,, this fits in with the colour of the sorbet as the berries and such will be purple and for the organic gnocchi salad card I used pale greens to fit the theme of the food being organic and also because the food is a salad. For the children’s cards on the creamy butterfly buns, which is obviously for girls because of the kind of food it is, I used typical girl colours like pinks and purples, and for the sweet chilli and apricot sausage rolls I was going to use a blue colour but it didn’t really represent what the food looked like, so I used orange which is also quite a boyish colour. I think that the design I used is really good as even though I did the same things, for example keeping the same font and layout on each card, because of the colours I have used on the different cards it makes them all look different, so for example because I used dark reds for the desert card it looks fancy, and because I used pinks
  • 3. for the creamy butterfly buns card it looks quite girly and child-like. I think that because of the way that I have done my images on the bottom left hand side of the page in a circle is also good because it fits both genders and all age ranges, with it being rounded/a circle people tend to think or I think that it looks classy and expensive, and if the card is for young children it also helps to make the card look playful.
  • 4. Audiences: Create an audience profile of your chosen demographic The age that I was going for when I was making my cards was all age groups, that’s because it’s something for every age to enjoy, this is clearly shown by the way that two cards have been made for children, the creamy butterfly buns, and there is two cards that have been made for adults. The gender for this card is boys and girls, but I’d say maybe more girls than boys, this is because the strawberry and raspberry dessert card are for women, and the chilli and apricot sausage roll card is for girls, though the organic gnocchi card could be for both but more women than men would eat the salad as it might be for women who are on a diet or just fancy something light to eat. NRS Social Grading for this card would be higher class, grade B, or C1, this is because the cards are going to be expensive but nice so that the taste makes up for it in the long run, this is won’t make lower class people feel left out from having nice luxurious food and will make grade B people still feel as if they have more money to get the nice food than others. How have you constructed your work to appeal to this audience? I have constructed my work to appeal to the audiences specified by using a range of different colours but still with a minimalistic pallet for each card depending on the theme. To make the theme stay the same apart from the colours on the card I thought I’d do a image of the dish on the back page taking up the full side but faded out, this made the card look classy, then after that I put a smaller picture in the bottom left hand side of the page and put a circle behind the image and created a clipping mask so that the image turned in to a circle, this made the card not only look interesting for young children so that the card was for them as well but even more sophisticated for adults, which I think gave the card more to look at. To make the card for bot genders I also createdtwo meals for men, one for young boys and one for adult men and two for female, one for young girls and one for adult females, this gave me a larger audience which I felt was a really good idea for my card.
  • 5. Historical and Cultural Context: What did you use as your design influences and why were they chosen? Nothing influenced my work apart from one card that I saw on Google images when we were asked to create our cards, on the card was a picture of a dish in a shape so this gave me the idea to put a picture of the dish in a circle on my card so that it was different instead of just being a square or triangle. Do vegetarian products have a specific design aesthetic and how does your project reflect/contrast this? Why? I don’t really think that vegetarian products do have a certain design aesthetic because the cards all tend to look really different, apart from somewhere on the card they always have the logo of the company the food is made by, which is important to be on a card so that the audience knows who made the food, this could be for different reasons. On my card there is a vegetarian society logo on the front of the card, so I think that this reflects the work of others.
  • 6. Finished Products: Does your finished product reflect your initial plans? How? If there are any differences, describe why changes were made. My final cards have changed completely compared to what I had planed, on the planning versions of the cards on the front of the cards I just had the name of the dish going across the whole page once, whereas on the final cards the name of the dish has been repeated over and over with a dark colour then a colour that’s slightly darker so that it stands out a little. I think that doing this made the cards look more professional and looked as if there was more to it rather than just a bland boring and simple front cover. On the back of the cards when I had been planning them the title of the dish has stayed the same and the title of the dish going horizontally down from that but faded out. The back of the card now also has a small circle image of the dish, which wasn’t on the planning. Does your finished product match what you were set in the brief? How? I think that my finished product does match the brief as it says to have a clear running theme which I have done, it also says to use original idea’s as well which I have also done. The brief says to have the company logo on the front of the card which I have done and fits the brief. It also says to create vegan or vegetarian meals which I have done also. How did the use of peer feedback help you in your production? When I was given my peer feedback there wasn’t really anything that I could do to improve my card as the feedback that I was given was all positive, baring one part where the person wrote that the font was hard to see on the back of the card because of the faded out image, but because the font was already bold I made the font as big as I could without it looking messy.
  • 7. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your final product regarding its technical and aesthetical qualities. Strengths: - Clear running theme through the card. - High quality images have been used. - The font is all easy for the reader which will leave them at ease when making the food. - The cards theme fits all genders and age groups and has stayed the same all the way through. Weaknesses: - The front of the card might be difficult to see but if the font was smaller it would be even harder, to make it better I could change the font to one that isn’t as fancy. I think that the technical side of my work is quite easy because most of the time I was just copying and pasting, and adding shapes to my images to create clipping masks, but I think that’s what the majority of people had done, if we were making something else then I think I would have been a bit move adventurous with how I did things, I would use more effects, etc. On the aesthetical quality side of things I think that the image of the dish that has been faded out makes the card look more expensive, I also think adding the small circle image of the dish makes the card stronger as It’s different, one for having it in a circle and two for having two images of the dish, meaning one faded and one not.
  • 8. What skills/knowledge have you gained/developed in this project? How could these be applied in future practice? During this project I learnt how to make standard rectangle images become different shapes, in the future I could use this to make what ever I’m making look more interesting and appealing to the audience. Production Processes Do you believe your work is creative and technically competent? Why? Like I said before I think that the parts of my work that look interesting is the background page, this is because of the faded out image of the dish and the circular one on the bottom left hand side of the page. I think that the title of the dish also looks good because of the way that it’s written normal across the top left hand side of the back page then faded out horizontally underneath that. How effectively did you manage your time? I think that I managed my time really well as I finished my work a week and 3 days early, some of the time I also used to improve my card. If you could repeat the process what would you do differently? Nothing.
  • 9. Working to a Brief in the Creative Media Industries Constraints Experienced: What constraints did you encounter and how did you consider/avoid them? Legal Constraints None. Regulatory Constraints Financial Constraints If I where actually having to make my cards for a client, the financial constraints might be that I might not have enough money to make the cards, for example getting them all printed out, and varnishing them. Management: How did you work as part of a group? I leaded the project myself for myself as I was working alone, I felt better working alone as I could have the card as I wanted without having to put other peoples idea’s in which maybe weren’t as good. How important is communication when working in a group? Very if you are working in a group because you need to be able to communicate to get things done and bounce ideas off each other. What have you learnt about working in a group and how will you apply this to future practice? Nothing as I worked on my own. What have you learnt about working in to a brief and how will you apply this to future practice? I’ve learnt that working to a brief is very important if you are get a task done to a high
  • 10. standard with the things needed and still giving me some time to go back and improve work if I needed to, in the future I will use this in all my briefs as it helped me meet my deadline early leaving time for improvement
