White Elephant Symbolism
The short story 'Hills Like White Elephant' starts with detailed description of a train station in Spain which turns into a dialog between an unmarried
couple about an abortion. The story setting plays a big role in how the characters will act and how they will express their feelings. Along with the
setting location, the time also plays an important role in the story. Hemingway uses a lot of symbols and figurative language of speech, so the time of
the story was not clear for most of the readers. However, the story happened during the mid day during a very hot summer day which has a very
important symbolism in the story. The mid–day represents that the day is not over, which symbolizes that they not have made they decision. The
couple were at a critical moment of their relationship, which is when they must decide whether or not to have an abortion. Certain themes arise
from this story such as choices and their consequences, doubt and ambiguity. "The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white. On this
side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun. [...] The American and the girl with him sat at a table
in the shade, outside the building. It was very hot and the express from Barcelona would come in forty minutes. It stopped at this junction for two
minutes and went to Madrid" (Page 176) The girl views having the child as a blessing and a great gift. However, the American sees it as an expenses

Symbolism In The Lottery
The Lottery: Symbolism
In story the Narrator is able to gather the ' attention and ultimately shock them with an unexpected ending; all of which help her emphasize the dark
side of human nature and the evil that resides, sometimes, in those who we less expect it from. Jackson uses symbolism throughout the story that helps
her set the mood and also makes the readers wonder and analyze the senseless violence and cruelty in their own lives.
It all starts with the setting of the story. As Jackson describes "the morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full
–summer
day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green". It seems to introduce a joyful, happy tale in a normal quiet village;
however, the truth lies ahead when the horrors of the lottery are discovered. The contrast of the setting and what actually takes place in the village,
symbolize the fact that looks can be deceiving, and that sometimes, even beautiful things have dark sides.
Then, Jackson writes "The people of the village began to gather in the square". The Village Square symbolizes the coming together of society, the
grouping of people and; consequently, also the beginning of collective thinking. The lottery itself is presented as an annual event that is like any other
local event in the village; she states "The lottery was conducted––as were the square dances, the teen club, and the Halloween program". For them, the
lottery was a regular part of their lives, which

Symbolism in “Cats” and “Shiloh”
Jill McCorkle, along with Bobbie Ann Mason often use the symbolism of a short story to further the meaning of the piece. In the short story "Shiloh",
Mason uses Leroy and Norma Jean to exhibit a further meaning of the story by effectively using symbolism. In addition to "Shiloh", McCorkle also
uses symbolism in her story "Cats" to symbolise how cats can be related to humans in multiple ways. McCorkle describes the relationship between two
cats, Pumpkin Pie and Possum, and their two human counterparts, Anne and Abbott, and how they share similar characteristics. In works such as
"Shiloh" and "Cats", symbolism furthers the meaning of the story and leave the interpretation of the work up to the reader.
In Bobbie Ann Mason's short story "Shiloh", Mason uses the marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean to symbolise how Leroy's life decisions can be
detrimental to his marriage. Ever since Leroy was in an accident while driving a truck, he was able to stay at home with Norma Jean often. This
time together make them realize how little they still loved each other. Mason uses the symbolism of him losing his job to represent how their love
for each other has deterred over the course of their marriage. Bobbie Ann Mason use symbolism effectively when he writes "Norma Jean has reached
the bluff, and she is looking out over the Tennessee River. Now she turns toward Leroy and waves her arms. Is she beckoning to him? She seems to
be doing an exercise for her chest muscles. The sky is unusually

Symbolism in "The Lottery" Essay
To a first time reader, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" seems simply as a curious tale with a shocking ending. After repetitive reading of Jackson's tale,
it is clear that each sentence is written with a unique purpose often using symbolism. Her use of symbols not only foreshadow its surprise and
disturbing ending but allows the reader to evaluate the community's pervert traditional rituals. She may be commenting on the season of the year and
the grass being "richly green" or the toying with the meanings of the character's names but each statement applies to the meaning and lesson behind her
story. As far as symbolism in objects, the most prominent and often mentioned is the "black box" from which the names are drawn from (Jackson 573).

Graves for permitted direction (Jackson 573). Ultimately there are only two views the townspeople have on the lottery; one is either for or against the
ritual, but there are many reasons why one may form their opinion. Originally, winning of the lottery is meant to be of great honor, the sacrificial
"lamb" offered to a Higher Power in hopes of receiving a plentiful season of crops for the overall community (Nebeker 8). "Life brings death, and
death recycles life" (Griffen 5). Over time much of the accustomed songs and original ways of conducting the ceremony were lost becoming more of
a nuisance (Griffen 5), and enabling the new generation to dream of a life without the lottery. Often it is the families who have experienced the
lottery's winnings on a personal level that hold the strongest opinions. The Dunbar family lost their son to the lottery as well as young Jack Watson
losing his father. Both families represent the pain of the personal loss caused by the lottery (Jackson 574–75). Jackson uses Old Man Warner as the
town's consistent reminder of the origins and sanctity of the lottery and strongly blockading the community of change. His name refers to his constant
warnings of what could come of losing the lottery and not respecting the tradition. After participating in

"He didn't drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with
him, (Shivers) like a raw wind that gets to the bone" (Glaspell). Minnie has suffered because of Mr. Wright's cold and unfeeling nature. "Her isolation,
the gloom of her surroundings, and her husband's dispassion slowly drove her to the brink of insanity" (Galen). When only the bird was holding
Minnie in the house was killed, she saw no reason that she should stay with her husband in that house. The men think women lack intelligence because
of their gender. After, the women look at the canary, birdcage, and thequilt they figure out how the husband died. In the drama "Trifles," the quilt
symbolizes Minnie's state of mind and it shows in her stitching how nervous and angry she feels. The patchwork of Minnie's life represents loneliness
and isolation. Usually when women do patchwork it consists of a cloth that has meaning behind it to treasure it. Women in a group come together and
work on their patchwork or they help each other, but Minnie had no one to help her and she felt lonely. Minnie's stitching goes from perfect and
orderly to messy and uneven, the stitching shows how nervous Minnie was at the time. The events happening in the house is a reflect on Minnie's
stitching. "She tried to fend off her depression with bits of gaiety–brightly colored quilts and a caged songbird–but when her husband, in a sudden act

Symbolism And Symbolism In The Great Gatsby
Throughout this novel we see many symbolic meanings, the author Scott. Fitzgerald intended it this way in order to send a message to the audience.
We see many colors showing symbolism some of this colors are green, yellow, white, red, and gold. I am going to talk about the color green and how
the author showed its impact and symbolism throughout this novel. These color often can be associated with people from the novel, for example the
green can be associated with Gatsby, the red can be associated with Myrtle, yellow and white can be associated with Daisy, and blue can be associated
with T.J. Eckleburg. This symbolic colors give great importance to the novel and it entertains the reader with this symbolic meanings throughout the
novel. Green is the color of spring, which symbolizes confidence, vitality and hope. In the Great Gatsby, the color green is closely associated with the
green light at the end of Daisy's dock. It symbolizes Gatsby's deep love to Daisy and his American Dream. But as the green light is always feeble
and far away, it also indicates the disillusionment of his dream. In other words, the green light symbolizes hope. It symbolizes hope because,
Gatsby sees this light as the hope of him and Daisy being together at one point. It shows Gatsby's love towards her because you can see how he
really feels about her when he tries to grab the light by stretching his arm as far as he can. This shows how Gatsby desperately tries to get Daisy's
heart but her heart is too far away from him. This light also signifies how close he is to Daisy, he think he can just grab her of how close he think
he is to her, but this can also be a disillusionment to his dreams because the light is always distant and far from him and he will never grab it just
like he could never have Daisy. Throughout this novel we can see Gatsby's affection towards this light, this light is very important and we see it being
reference back and forth throughout the whole book. This color made the novel more vivid, more colorful, more dreamlike, more visionary and more
profound. It helps the reader connect with the book. You can relate to Gatsby's feeling when he sees the light and he tries to grab it and it makes the

Story Of An Hour Symbolism
"The Story of an Hour," written by Kate Chopin, is a short story featuring a woman with a feeble heart, and the story centers on Louise Mallard and
her reactions to her husband's "death." Throughout "The Story of an Hour," Louise Mallard experiences various emotions that leave her wondering
how she truly feels about the news of her husband's death. Before leaving her room and after hours of genuine depression, Louise Mallard realizes that
her husband's death may have granted her something extremely valuable: independence. Chopin created the story in an era where men predominantly
controlled the lives of women. In "The Story of an Hour," Louise Mallard is expelled from the chains of her husband's control. Although they had a

the joy that can be obtained from the independence of being single. It not only demonstrates the importance of independence, but it also has and
continues to empower women and men. The short story has captivated the minds of numerous feminists as one of the earliest pieces of the feminist
movement. It was a remarkable piece for its time as it managed to empower women and not contain a traditional woman. The independence and the joy
it produces could have never been exemplified as well without the powerful symbolism that Kate Chopin

Symbolism In Short Story
Symbolism is a type of literary device which is used by most authors in many different literary genres, such as poems, short stories, and novels. It is
the practice of using symbols to convey a more profound thought and idea to the readers, which can be displayed in various ways, such as objects,
places, events, and facts. Symbols play a significant role in written works, as it helps the readers to understand the intended meanings and words that
are associated with the events in the story. In the three short stories selected, symbolism is used to reveal the underlying message of the story. In this
case, symbolism signifies social issues that are rampant in our society. The three short stories, "The Lesson", "Indian Education", and... Show more

Furthermore, there is a climactic scene in the story where Sylvia and Sugar interrupted a ceremony in the Catholic Church. Their unethical behaviour
shows their unfamiliarity in a formal setting. Bambara demonstrates the significant gap between two different social classes in her story that were
evident in the style of dressing, wealth, language, behaviour, and quality of education.
Moving onto the next short story, Alexie's "Indian Education" tackles social issues of racial discrimination and stereotyping, which stems from his
personal experiences. As he was growing up, Victor faces discrimination from white people which made his childhood full of sorrow, fear, and
misery. Victor explains how Indians are often perceived as outsiders and failures. Victor lives in a community where there is a gap between people
from different cultures. Alexie uses different symbols to emphasize racial discrimination. Cutting one's hair is one of these symbols which expresses
Native Indian's culture and identity. Victor states "She sent a letter home with me that told my parents to either cut my 14 braids or keep me home
from class" (Alexie 321). The ultimatum Victor received affirms the boundaries that were set in place. It's either Victor succumbs to their will or
defend his culture. Many Native Americans perceive their hair as a memento of their identity and culture. Moreover, he was tormented by his peers

Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies
If a group of young boys ended up deserted on an island for many months with no parental supervision, then one would conclude that matters on the
island would begin to go haywire. British author, William Golding, narrates this exact plot in his popular novel Lord of the Flies. The underlying
theme of the book is quite obvious: human nature. Throughout the novel, Golding portrays the theme with symbolism. One of the most obvious
symbols that can be traced through the entire novel is Piggy's glasses. Piggy's glasses emphasize both the boys' inevitable path of destruction and their
fall back to human nature. In the beginning, the glasses are in almost perfect condition. However, as the boys fall away from social structure, give into
human nature, and begin to focus on other trivial distractions, the glasses shatter, and in the end, become useless. Golding uses foreshadowing,
carefully chosen diction, and an extended definition in order to develop the symbolism of the glasses. Ultimately, the glasses symbolize clarity, and the
boys' focus on rescue. As the glasses continue to break, the boys progressively lose sight of civilization and rescue, ultimately becoming savages.
Golding uses Piggy's glasses as a symbol for the boys focus on rescue. When the boys first arrive on the island, the initial method of survival they
plan is to create a signal fire with Piggy's glasses. In chapter two "Fire on the Mountain," the boys steal Piggy's glasses from him for a short time and

Lord Of The Flies Symbolism
The human mind consists of two instincts that constantly have conflict with each other: the instinct to live by society's rules and the instinct to live by
one's own rules. Eventually, everyone chooses to live by one or the other depending on how they feel is the correct way to live. In the allegorical novel
"Lord of the Flies", William Golding utilizes these two instincts to create the theme of civilization versus savagery and in order to exhibit this, Golding
uses a wide range of symbols. Golding's very first symbol is the conch as he uses it to show the start of civilization on the island, he then moves onto
using the beast and its growth of relevance and finally uses the fire to finish the novel in an ironic way.
At the start, the conch is shown as a symbol of civilization on the island, but as time progresses there is a decline of its importance and this is
where the symbolism for savagery can be seen. Through the use of the conch and how it changes throughout the story, Golding conveys the theme
easily by clearly portraying the role that the conch plays as well as changing its appearance and how the boys react to it throughout the novel. An
example of the theme of civilization appearing in the conch can be seen when Ralph announces one of the first rules. "I'll give the conch to the next
person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking" (Golding, 1954, page 31). It is evident that with the help of the conch the boys act in a civilized
manner and law and order is

Symbolism And Symbolism In Wuthering Heights By Emily Bronte
A heart shape symbolizes love, a star shape symbolizes fame, and a diamond shape symbolizes wealth. Isn't is crazy that a something physical can be
utilized within writing to represent something emotional or figurative? Symbolism is the art of using an object or situation to represent an abstract
idea. It is when an object, person, or situation have both a literal meaning, and a figurative meaning. Many authors use symbolism to add personality
and emotion to their writing. Symbols within pieces of literature make the writing more enjoyable and interesting to read. Emily Bronte efficiently uses
symbolism throughout her novel Wuthering Heights to enhance her writing and give her work more richness. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte takes
place in England on two very contrasting estates, Wuthering Heights, owned by the Earnshaw family, and Thrushcross Grange, owned by the Linton
family. Both of the estates in this novel can be considered symbolic. Wuthering Heights symbolizes the dark, cold, and gloomy nature of the
circumstances around it. They even proclaim in the novel that the name of the estate is "descriptive of the atmosphere tumult to which its station is
exposed in stormy weather"(4). The weather around Wuthering Heights also contributes to its symbolic meaning. The strong winds symbolize the
tough times presented to those who live there, along with exemplifying the toughness of the inhabitants themselves. When Catherine is at Wuthering
Heights she often feels as

The Lottery Symbolism
Tradition is highly valued by people throughout the world. In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" it is tradition to sacrifice a person once a year for
good harvest. The villagers gather around Mr. Summers, who has a black box sitting on a stool, to see who will choose a folded piece of paper with
a dot on it. Whichever family has the dot will have to draw again, and the family member who draws it next is stoned. The three–legged stool, black
box, and stones used in the story all show a great deal of symbolism. The three–legged stool used to support the black box holds a few important
meanings. One symbol of the stool is the tradition of the lottery. Every summer the stool is used to support the worn out black box. The stool "was
put in the center of the square and Mr. Summers set the black box down on it" (228). Even though the villagers are aware of the stool, they do not
feel inclined to move closer to it. The "villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool"(228). Keeping space between
the stool gives the people a feeling of safety and security. The villagers hold fear towards the tradition of the lottery. The stool also represents death
because the box that is set on it holds the piece of paper with the dot on it that determines one person's life. Even though the villagers hold the strong
fear towards the stool and box, they are keeping a tradition that no one enjoys. Due to them being used to the event, they do not feel entitled to

What Is The Symbolism In The Lottery
Symbolism is often used in literature to convey something or some idea with... well a symbol without openly stating it. In Shirley Jackson's "The
Lottery" symbolism is used heavily. To set up a tone that contrasts the initial atmosphere, to add mysterious feel to the story, and to hide what was
happening in the story till the very end.
In the beginning of "The Lottery", the setting is stated as, "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer
day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green."( Jackson, 247). This line gives us the impression that that this will be a

Until around the time all the families open their papers; "After that, there was a long pause, a breathless pause, until Mr. Summers, holding his slip of
paper in the air, said 'All right fellows.' For a minute, no one moved, and then all the slips of paper were opened."(Jackson, 250–251) at this point the
tension had shot up all at once. The Hutchinson family had been chosen for the lottery and Tessie, a character introduced earlier, broke out in a
sudden anger and what seemed like desperation as Mr. Hutchinson had gotten quite serious. The inference could be made that being chosen by the
lottery isn't a good thing, and that something is very wrong with this lottery. They draw again but only for the Hutchinson family members; of
which there were five. The focus eventually shifted to Tessie when she was holding her piece of paper: "It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr.
Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal company office."(Jackson, 252). When it is found out Tessie had the black dot,
she was stoned to death by the entire town. The black dot symbolizing who would die, as a sacrifice to help crops grow in a possibly centuries old,

Symbolism In The Lottery
Hidden Symbolism in "The Lottery"
Shirley Jackson writes an intriguing tale titled "The Lottery" in which she conveys the meaning of a lottery through symbolism and emphasis of the
physical elements of the black box, stones, and references to the Bible. Analysis of these symbols will reveal ideas of tradition, darkness, generational
change, and illogical loyalty. First, the appearance of the black box symbolizes the occurring of the lottery precisely on July Twenty–seventh in the
village square. Not the day before, and not the day after. The remaining 364 days in the year the black box is stored away and not mentioned: "the
rest of the year, the box was put away, sometimes in one place. Sometimes another; it had spent one year in Mr. Graves's barn and another year
underfoot in the post office." (138). When Mr. Summers arrives in the town square carrying the black box the other villagers know that the ritual of
the lottery has begun. The black box is to the lottery as a Christmas tree is to Christmas. Every year we know that Christmastime has arrived when we
first see the traditional Christmas tree. Similarly, the black box represents the lottery's tradition which is carried out within the society. Second,
when the black box appears in the village square, the villagers receive a symbolical image that death is on the horizon. The emphasis put on the
black coloring of the box symbolizes the negative connotation of the event. The event of the lottery is a joyful or enlightening occurrence, rather
symbolism portrays the ritual as being serious, uncertain, and dark. Jackson describes that "a murmur of conversation" arose among the villagers at
the sight of the "black wooden box." (138). The black box was placed on a stool in the center of town where villagers "kept their distance, leaving a
space between themselves and the stool." (138). Third, Jackson's descriptions of the conditions of the wooden black box symbolize the changes and
forgetfulness of the ritual. The black box has become "shabbier each year," losing its color and splintering. (138). Like the box, that faded and warped
over time, the society's tradition gradually lost its meaning. It became an annual event they

Symbolism And Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies By William...
*hook* A symbol is defined as a literary device where an object, person, or situation has a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story. Throughout
the novel, author William Golding includes symbolism that hints at irony, foreshadowing, and a variety of themes. These symbols contribute to the
depth and meaning of the story, allowing the characters to act under their influence. In Lord of the Flies, there is a numerous amount of symbols, such
as the signal fire, the conch, and the ritual.
The signal fire possesses many symbolic meanings essential to the story, Lord of the Flies. In the beginning of the novel, Ralph started a signal fire and
instructed some of the boys to tend it. He used its smoke to show a sign of life on the island ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The shell was discovered by Ralph and Piggy on the beach in the first chapter. Because it was used to unite the boys after the plane crash, the conch
became a symbol of civilization, power, and order. In assemblies, the conch gave the power of speech to whoever held it. When meetings were
called, the boys listened to those who possessed the shell, as they still respected the "rule of the conch." Even Jack, who was not in favor of most
rules, he respected the conch, as he "laid the conch with great care in the grass at his feet" after a meeting (127). Golding uses the conch as a
reminder that tools of power are worthless without given meanings from the people. Without agreement to them, rules are powerless and serve no
purpose to society, just like the conch. The conch was only an object before the boys gave it a purpose. Its power diminishes throughout the novel as
Jack and his tribe disregard its rules and descend into savagery, thus making it useless. As well as the conch, the ritual dance developed in the story is
also an important symbol.
Another significant symbol in Lord of the Flies is Jack's ritual. The ritual dance and chant symbolizes the savagery and primitive religion that Jack
and his tribe developed during the novel. At first, however, Jack used the ritual as a fun way to escape the hardships and new reality of the island. Its
excitement and sense of belonging attracted other boys to Jack's new method of

Goodman Brown Symbolism
In "Young Goodman Brown", by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the short story discusses the journey of Young Goodman Brown, a young religious man who
is a member of the Puritan church. Goodman Brown is travelling down a path in a forest, and he converses with an old man. While Goodman Brown
is resting in the forest, he hears Faith scream, and also envisions her pink ribbons falling off. Goodman Brown grabs the staff that the old man gave
him, and it guides him to a witch meeting. They are converting the Puritan inhabitants into their sinful ways, and Goodman Brown is urged forward
by the minister, and Deacon Gookin. Another convert is also ushered forward, but they are covered with a veil. Faith is revealed to be the convert,
and Goodman Brown encourages Faith to resist the evil temptations. When Goodman Brown awakens, he is never the same as he was before, and he
is gloomy for the rest of his life, even until his death. Throughout "Young Goodman Brown", by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author utilizes various
examples of symbolism to inform the reader of his Christian beliefs, and to bring the major flaws of the Puritan community to light.
In the beginning of the story, he is conversing with his wife, Faith, about how he must leave her behind for this one night. For example, in this quote,
it explains: "'My love and my Faith," replied young Goodman Brown, "of all nights in the year, this one night must I tarry away from thee..."

Symbolism is the use of symbols that help represent ideas or qualities. In literature, authors use symbolism to illustrate a specific mood or emotion
through the use of objects or characters. Symbolism helps engage the readers to predict and analyze certain meanings presented in the story instead of
just reading it. The two short stories, "A and P" written by John Updike and "Young Goodman Brown" written by Nathaniel Hawthorne both showcase
and convey symbolism throughout their writing. In the story "A and P", there are many examples of symbolism that are introduced. Firstly, the bathing

spings of mint in them." Sammy realizes in that moment that they come from 2 different worlds as he thinks about her life verses his own by

truth Queenie's wealth and freedom that he picks up through the use of observation symbolises his desire and aspiration to want those same things.

symbolism is also present through objects and names of characters. The first example of symbolism can be found in the main character's name. The

Symbolism In Catcher In The Rye
Catcher in the Rye People need to read Catcher in the Rye at least once before they die. Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is a book that takes the
reader inside the head of Holden Caulfield, a depressed sixteen–year–old, who enters a strange series of adventures in New York City. Holden writes
his story from a mental hospital in California, about how he was expelled from a fancy prep school, his experiences after spending a few days in NYC.
The book has had critical success since its publication in 1951, selling sixty–five million total copies, after a splendid review from the New York
Times. Catcher in the Rye is a great novel because of its subtle symbolism, amazing portrayal of Holden Caulfield and ends on a higher note than
most people realize. Catcher in the Rye uses excellent symbolism to convey ideas to the reader. One might compare it to Lord of the Flies, an
average book that teachers force students to read once in their lives for its use of symbolism. Personally, I think Catcher in the Rye has better
symbolism than Lord of the Flies. This is because the symbolic objects are easier to identify than the objects in Lord of the Flies. As a result, the
reader spends more time focusing on what the object represents, rather than wondering whether the object is symbolic or not. Take the red hunting
cap, for example. This can be identified as a symbol based solely on the fact that these hats are almost never worn, whether the story's set in the 50's,
the 1700's, or

On the surface, the poem "Birches" by Robert Frost is simply about a man who would like to believe that birch trees are bent from young boys
swinging on them, despite the evidence that it is merely a result of the ice–storms. Even with this knowledge he prefers the idea of the boys swinging
from the trees because he was a birch swinger years ago and continuously dreams of returning and experiencing those pleasant memories once again.
From a more explored and analytical point of view, the birch trees symbolize life and serves as the speaker 's temporary channel of escape from the
world and its harsh realities. The speaker uses his imagination to return to his innocent childhood. He hopes to relieve stress and prepare to face life and

Symbolism in literature is using an object to portray a different, deeper meaning in a story. Symbols represent ideas or qualities that the author has
maneuvered into his or her story that has meaning. There can be multiple symbols in a story or just one. It is up to the reader to interpret the
meaning of the symbols and their significance to the story. In "A Rose for Emily", William Faulkner effectively uses symbolism to illustrate the
fading glory of the Old South giving away to the progress of reconstruction and the new century. It also plays a role in understanding the whole
meaning of the story and why Emily is a tragic figure as opposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The story addresses the changes after the Civil War, and Miss Emily is one of the people who refuse to change. As the Old South is dying, Miss
Emily holds to her traditions even though she is dying away. Miss Emily represents the dying Old South. She fights to keep the Old South tradition
alive, but while this is happening, her house is turning into a decaying eyesore. When the townspeople say Miss Emily is a fallen monument, it is
thought that Miss Emily is a monument of Southern traditions. Miss Emily represents the idea of past values and manners. When Miss Emily dies,
she, as well as her house becomes a symbol of the dying, lost generation (Melczarek 240). Like in most Gothic literature, in "A Rose for Emily," one
of the most important symbols is Miss Emily Grierson's house. In the story, the house is described as "an eyesore among eyesores" (Faulkner 323). It
was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of

Mrs Mallard Symbolism
In the short story "The Story of an Hour", Kate Chopin weaves many facets of storytelling into a few short paragraphs such as irony, character
development, and symbolism all emphasizing how Mrs. Mallard, after learning of her husband's death, transforms grief into something much greater.
The story takes place in the time of only an hour and it's inferred that Mallard lives more in this hour than she has in her entire lifetime. Chopin
includes many different symbols to the transformation of Mrs. Mallard; this is shown with the symbolism of her heart trouble, the open window
representing her new life, and the final transformation before her death. To begin with, Mrs. Mallard's heart trouble is symbolic of her physical and
mental well being.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mallard learns of her husband's death and follows her transformation from weak to strong. Symbols are widely used throughout to demonstrate how
she has transformed, while also emphasizing how dramatic of a transformation it truly was. The open window and her heart trouble definitively
symbolize the beginning and middle of the transformation and her entire transformation is powerful and symbolic of living her entire life in the space
of an hour. The entirety of the story forces the reader to truly introspect and realize how precious life

The Storm Symbolism
Authors use many elements to establish a great story line. In A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O'Connor and The Storm by Kate Chopin, the
main element that was used throughout the stories was symbolism. In A Good Man is Hard to Find, there are two characters in the story with
contrasting symbols. The grandmother represents all that is good in the world and the Misfit represents all that is evil in the world. It is a contrast
between Christianity and evil. In The Storm, the main symbol is the storm. The storm represents a powerful affair between two characters during the
storm. Symbolism is a very successful way to endure the attention of the reader. It causes the reader to use more thought while reading to decipher the
symbols in the story.
There are two characters in A Good Man is Hard to Find that are contrastingly symbolic. The grandmother represents the possible good of the world
and the good that comes with Christianity. The grandmother tends to always follow the path that God has intended for her to take, a pure path. Her
cleanliness can be associated with the saying, cleanliness is next to Godliness. The grandmother is shown to be a respectful person in the way that she
dresses. "...the grandmother had on a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy–blue dress with a small white dot
in the print. Her collar and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace, and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets

October 29, 2017 The Things They Carried
How many "things" do you carry with you every day? Everybody carries things that symbolize who they are or where they are from. Those things may
be heavy, light, or even things that you cannot see. In the short story "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, he introduces a lot of symbolism in
every object mentioned, many of them you can see, some you can't see. In this short story, the narrator tells of the burdens carried by each soldier and
the meanings of these things to the men. The things they carried described in detail the soldier's emotional issues in their lives ... Show more content on

Often, they would share the load of machinery by taking turns carrying the equipment and giving relief to the men that routinely carried it. This is just
some of the things that were specialized to an individual according to their size or skill. But the soldiers also carried things that weren't so necessary,
yet they would bring these things along anyway for certain personal reasons and a sense of security.
Not only did the soldiers carry heavy physical burdens, they carried heavy emotional burdens of fear and the need to maintain ties to home. According
to Evans, "Grief, terror, love, longing–these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had tangible weight"
(Evans, 2015). O'Brien clearly defines one of the hardest things the men had to carry, "By and large they carried these things inside, maintaining
the masks of composure." (O'Brien, 1990, p. 184). Henry Dobbins, who was a big man, always had a lot of extra food with him. He burned up food
very quickly and went through food much faster than most. He would also carry his girlfriend's pantyhose around his neck. This was his way of
telling everybody that he had a girlfriend at home and was sexually active when he had breaks. The pantyhose symbolized his masculinity and the
normal, rational existence of home. Ted Lavender was the guy who carried tranquilizers, 6–7 ounces of dope, and more rounds of ammunition than

Symbolism And Symbolism In Roman Fever By Edith Wharton
The short story, "Roman Fever", written by Edith Wharton, tells of the two American ladies who had an unexpected meeting in Rome. The two
ladies, Mrs. Grace Ansley and Mrs. Alida Slade, were seated in a restaurant at a table where they faced the ruins of the Roman Forum. The setting
triggers memories to soon fill the minds of the two women who had spent their younger years living in this very same place. Edith Wharton uses
symbolism to characterize the life of lies the girls have lived in to illuminate the naivete of young girls in love.
The title itself is an illusion that becomes symbolic for a young girl's love . Several centuries ago, Roman Fever was a term given to a deadly strain of
malaria that swept across Rome. The disease killed thousands of people and ran ramped for many years. Both the disease and the women share many
of the same qualities. For instance, when Mrs. Slade "seemed physically reduced by the blow– as if, when she got up, the wind might scatter her like a
puff of dust" after beginning the conversation with Grace about the love letter (paragraph 95). The image symbolizes how a person might feel with
the Roman Fever disease. Although no character is ill with the Roman Fever, Wharton reveals how a young girl's love can be like a disease as deadly
as malaria.
Wharton chose the title to further display how powerful the stronghold of jealousy was on the two ladies. For example, "You tried your best to get
away from me, didn't you? But you

Symbolism on the Giver
In the novel The Giver by Lois Lowry, there are many different symbols and come to together to help form the theme. Symbolism and themes are
difficult to infer in a text, but understanding these literary elements makes the book more interesting and entertaining for the reader. Symbolism is
defined using a concrete word, object, color, picture, name and so forth to strand for a name, abstract idea, image, or event. For example a heart
could stand for love and an American flag as freedom or patriotism. Theme could be defined as a meaning moral or main message the writer is trying
to tell you or the reader about the story. Theme is usually the "life lesson" or provide to human nature. Lois Lowery's "The Giver" contains symbolism

Right...). Jonas then gets to experience this himself, as the sled is his first memory. Of course, we see the same sled again at the end of the novel, as
Jonas races downhill toward the village that's either a hallucination or the Elsewhere of his dreams. The Giver explicitly spells out the simile for
you, there's not much more to say in the vein of "riding downhill = receiving memories." But we can think about what it means when Jonas
actually does ride down the hill at the end of the novel. Until now, this action has been a sort of dream, someone else's memory, someone else's
exhilaration, someone else's difficulty and pain. But now all of these things are very much Jonas's own. The novel even states explicitly that now
Jonas is using his own recollections, rather than drawing on the fleeting memories passed on to him by The Giver. In short, his dreams have
become reality, and the sled clues us into that. Of course, it's also possible that the final sled ride is just Jonas's memory, and that it's not happening
at all, which would really shoot that theory down. There is definitely an association in The Giver between those who can receive memories and those
who have light eyes. There isn't really any explanation for why this is, and it would pretty useless for us to sit around and speculate about why this is,
logically or scientifically. It's better to think about it as an artistic device that Lowry used to help us make

Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies
Symbolism Is Real The novel Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding is a very iconic book in my opinion. This novel consists mostly of
symbolism. Lord of the Flies talked about the relationship of teenage boys who survived a plane crash together. The boys are all on their own and
struggling. They encounter many incidences that comply symbolism. A couple of the acts of symbolism are the beast the boys kept imagining,
Piggy's glasses, and the conch. The boys are all afraid of the beast, Piggy's glasses demonstrate the fact that he saw everything more clear then the
boys and how he started the fire. Lastly, the last of the most important symbolisms in the novel is the conch, showing the civilization and order.
The imaginary beast that scares the teenage boys stands as the savagery existing within all human beings. The beast scares all the boys but only
Simon reaches the realization that exists within each of them.As I said before, the boys are afraid of the something in their imagination, which
applies as the beast. This is apart of their imagination, which means the evil part among us. In the book, Piggy begins to say that the beast is just
fear and Simon tells them, "Maybe, maybe there is a beast what I mean is maybe it's only us". This is saying that Piggy and Simon believe and are
implying that the beast among them are themselves. Jack states that the beast can take shape in any form, which is typically saying that the beast
can take over anyone. It is foreshadowing how the beast will soon come out of the boys and start a troubling and dangerous riot. The beast can't be
killed because it is in every single one of us. The beast is the dark side inside all of us. The beast cannot be hunted and killed, because if the pig is
apart of themselves, that means they are killing themselves. The boys are afraid of the beast, but only Simon realizes that they fear the beast
because it exists in each of them. As the boys grow more restless, their belief in the beast grows stronger. By the end of the novel, the boys are
leaving it and their actions is what brings the beast into their lives. The more crazy the boys are, it becomes more real. Piggy represents the real

Symbolism In Literature
During the process of writing literature, and for works of fiction especially, authors will often utilize a literary device known as symbolism, in order
to further engage readers and add a deeper layer of meaning to their story. Any object, person, or situation, can be used as a symbol provided it
represents an additional concept or abstract idea apart from its literal meaning. In several fictitious stories, the element of symbolism plays a crucial
role in helping writers extend the meaning behind their works beyond the prosaic. Two notable pieces of literature that skilfully demonstrate how
symbolic imagery can enhance the narrative include, Frankenstein and "Goblin Market"–written by Mary Shelley and Christina Rossetti, respectively.
Within both of these literary works, symbolic imagery is effectively employed, by setting the tone of the story, adding depth to the characters, and
expressing the significance of several complex themes.
In Frankenstein, the use of symbolic imagery helps Shelley present various key themes instrumental in deepening the reader's understanding of her
novel. One of the more prominent themes portrayed in Frankenstein, is that of an individual versus society. Throughout the tale, Victor's grotesque
creation, to which he had "so miserably given life" (Shelley 59), struggles to find a place in a world determined to ostracize him due to his monstrous
appearance. The creature's hideous features both literally, and symbolically, label him an outsider to society, which leads to him being mistreated by all
those whom he encounters; this demonstrates Shelley's idea of how sometimes, it is "the terrors that stem from our elaborate civilization [that] may be
far more threatening than those that primitive people attribute to demons" (Jung 63). Another major theme expressed within Frankenstein, was that of
the duality of progress and innovation, symbolized by the recurring image of fire. For Frankenstein's creation, the discovery of fire granted him
blessed warmth and security, that is, until he drew too close: "I found a fire...and was overcome with delight at the warmth I experienced from it. In
my joy, I thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain"

Symbolism And Metaphors In Poetry
Symbolism and Metaphor in Poetry The meaning of a poem can be expressed through literary devices such as a metaphor or symbolism. When
looking at the poem "My Papa's Waltz", there is symbolism and there are also metaphors being shown. A metaphor is comparing two unlike things
without using like or as and symbolism is to reinforce, add, and carry more meaning. In "My Papa's Waltz", there are numerous times that symbolism is
enforced. For example, the lines: The whiskey on your breath
Could make a small boy dizzy;
But I hung on like death;
Such waltzing was not easy.
We romped until the pans
Slid from the kitchen shelf;
My mother's countenance
Could not unfrown itself. (1–8) suggest that the child was living with an abusive, drunk father and a mother who could not stand up for herself or her
child. Some symbols in the poem are waltzing and whiskey. Waltzing symbolizes the abuse the father did and whiskey symbolizes the drinking the
father did. Those two things symbolize the meaning of the poem. The meaning of this poem suggests that alcoholics are mean and aggressive towards
others. They are also hard to cooperate with, which might infer why the mother could not help her son during the traumatic beatings. Metaphors are
also visible in the poem as well and are shown in the lines
You beat time on my head
With a palm caked hard by dirt,
Then waltzed me off to bed
Still clinging to your shirt. (13–16)
When it says "you beat time on my head"(851), the speaker wasn't

The Importance Of Symbolism In Literature
Symbolism is a very important aspect of writing good literature. Symbolism can han have a major impact on a piece of literature, it can make a bad
writing really interesting or it can make a good writing have a totally different meaning. Most readers miss the symbols the first time reading through
the work and they don't get it until someone teaches them or if they read it again, sometimes the symbols are hard to detect in the story or poem, and
other times they can be super easy to find such as a giant red A on your chest. In 1984 the manySymbol was pretty easy to figure out and a had a big
meaning for part of the book which was really fascinating once you figured it out. Overall symbolism is very important and hopefully everyone who
reads this will realize that.
Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. There are hundreds of different symbols authors and poets
use and even more ways for them to use each symbol. If you think about it anything really can be a symbol if the author wants it to be. There are
some basic things to know about symbolism such as that the night often represents death and the morning usually represents the start of life, another
big one to remember is that usually a storm is meaning that there is a conflict. There can be things as Broad as the sky or things as small as a cell
used as a symbol. They enhance the theme, ideas, or characters in a story to make it interesting or help prove a point or

The Lottery Symbolism
Shirley Jackson's 1948 short story "The Lottery" takes place in a small town with a population of three hundred people. The lottery that occurs is not
quite what the reader expects, and in order to grasp what the lottery is, the reader must understand the plethora of symbols that are utilized throughout
the story. Jackson's use of symbols demonstrates the need for belonging, and the dangers and violence that can come with tradition. The firstsymbol
that is evident to me throughout "The Lottery," is the black box. The black box is used annually for the lottery in the village, and is older than the
oldest man in town (Jackson, 410). The color of the box is what first stands out to me. Black often represents negativity and power. The atmosphere
on the day of the lottery is very tense, and while many of the civilians tried to hide their fear, they are scared for what the next few hours will entail,
and who the unlucky person will be. The box is also extremely old as well, which symbolizes the danger of sticking with tradition for so long.
While tradition is not always a bad thing, in this case it is. As stated throughout the text, this is an annual tradition of the village, and the young
generation that wants to break the tradition is out of their mind according to the older civilians (412). The villagers are very unwilling to fix the
box or use a new box, which also represents their stubbornness and mentality to be averse to any sort of change, which can be connected to their
unwillingness to put a stop to the annual lottery. The annual lottery itself is a symbol of many of the motives of the villagers. Lotteries are risky,
and based upon chance. This tradition is a major event and ordeal throughout the village, which is symbolic of the rituals that motivate our society as
a whole. Often times we only think of traditions as things that we do every holiday, or rituals that we go through on special occasions. However, our
society has an array of traditions that we go through each and every day, such as being expected to go to work on weekdays, or even participating in
sports. Traditions also have a positive connotation, which can lead to the fear of accepting the faults in some customs. Lotteries The stones

Scarlet Letter And Symbolism
The Scarlet Letter and Symbolism Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many forms of symbolism in his book The Scarlet Letter. Symbolism is, according to
Merriam–Webster, "the art or practice of using symbols, especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or
intangible by means of visual or sensuous representations." This means that the author was using objects to represent an action or idea. The symbols
used in his book is either all physical or visible objects. Many of the symbols in the book are about characters.Nathaniel's ideas came from his bonds
with the Puritans. According to CliffsNotes, "the Puritans had great difficulty in loving the sinner and hating the sin". With the Puritans strong hatred

This woman was brave enough to stand on the scaffold and confess her sin, but she never did say who the partner was in the act of the crime. Hester
was also a symbol of peace. Towards the end of the book, she ends up turning into an adviser to some of the townspeople. Her kindness towards the
town made most of them look at her from a different perspective. She would bring the homeless clothes that she made for them and they would
criticize her afterwards. Children would call her names their parents would call her and women would give her the silent treatment or yell at her
(Hathorne). That all changed towards the end. Instead of thinking of her letter as "adultery" it was now known as "able". Another symbol that
Nathaniel used was the sunlight. The sunlight was known as happiness, joy, and truth. Sunlight would not be around Hester because ofthe scarlet letter,
but it was okay around Pearl. "'Mother,' said little Pearl, 'the sunlight does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of
something on your bosom'" (Hawthorne 202). After Hester takes off her scarlet letter the sunshine came out directly on top of Hester. It was no
longer a dark place for her. As soon as her letter was put back on, the bright sun also disappeared. The sunlight is a symbol of truth in one particular
way. Mr. Dimmesdale confesses his sin in the sunlight. All truth was let out as soon as he confessed. Not everyone

Symbolism In A Rose For Emily
Symbolism is the use of an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. It's often used by writers to represent a hidden message or a hint in a
story. The short Stories " A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker are great examples of the use of symbolism.
In "A Rose for Emily" Faulkner uses symbolism to create a Story about a woman called Emily whose life is surrounded by mysteries, especially after
the death of her father and the disappearance of her beloved Homer. Falkner uses symbolism to hide several messages through the Story which, in my
opinion, sounds very morbid as things happen. In "Everyday Use," Alice Walker symbolizes her messages through a beautiful detailed story where

Emily herself is also considered a symbol. She has a great admiration for her father for her father who have always protect her from everything,
specially from men. After he passes way Emily doesn't want to accept his death and becoming completely isolated on her house refusing any kind
of change around her. Emily grows older and has a "sort of tragic and serene"(227) appearance. Her obsession of keep the same life style she used
to have when her father was alive makes Emily set her own rules in Town. She wants to keep a verbal agreement her father had excusing her from
paying taxes, refuses the modernization on mail, and keeps her "old fashioned" world inside of her house while the world outside is changing.
Emily tries to keep the same "status" of the high society group she used to belong. Her attempt to stay in the past represents the decline of this
social group, the representation of an "old society" refusing the new, the modernization, the technology. The symbols help the author of " A Rose
for Emily" address the message of we can't avoid the changes around us. The world is in constant changing and we have to follow it. In " Every
Day Use", Alice Walker also uses several symbols to transmit her message to the readers. Living in a rural area, Mrs. Johnson cleans her yard to the
arrival of her daughter Dee who's coming to visit her from city. On the first paragraph she prepares the yard carefully and describes the yard carefully.

The scarlet letter also symbolizes grace and elegance along with punishment. "But the point which drew all eyes, and, as it were, transfigured the
wearer – so that both men and women, who had been familiarly acquainted with Hester Prynne were now impressed as if they beheld her for the first
time – was that scarlet letter, so fantastically embroidered and illuminated upon her bosom."(Hawthorne, 61). The scarlet letter is one of the most
important symbols in the book and the meaning of what it symbolizes revolves around the plot, characters, and their actions.
Another obvious symbol in The Scarlet Letter is the scaffold. The scaffold is where Hester was forced to stand and have everyone look upon her and
her sin. Most readers should realize relatively quickly what the scaffold symbolizes and why it plays such an important role in The Scarlet Letter. The
scaffold represents public acknowledgment of sin and shame. "The unhappy culprit sustained herself as best a woman might, under the heavy weight
of a thousand unrelenting eyes, all fastened upon her, and concentrated at her bosom."(Hawthorne, 64). All throughout the novel, the scaffold
symbolizes the same idea of public sin and the acknowledgement of it. Whoever is standing on the scaffold is on display to everyone that lives in the

Symbolism Of The Arnold Friend
There is a point in the adolescence of a child in which they encounter a fork, that can lead one of two ways. The path they end up on is determined by
their personal feelings toward the world, the way they have been raised, and who they want to become in the future. In the short story titled, "Where
are you going where have you been" this point is explicitly expressed in the title alone. One of the interpretations of this short story is that a man named
Arnold Friend liberated a young rebellious girl, Connie, from the torment of her youth. However, in reality the audience is eluded to the symbolism
that Connie is being pulled away from her "golden" innocence and into the arms of Satan himself. Arnold Friend exhibits Satanic traits, and on this
symbolic level, a young girl being stripped from her childhood, and into an unforgiving world. The story reveals that Arnold Friend is no boy or
friend, he is referred to as a devil–like character. As the story progresses, signs are observed that highlight the rebellious girl as she sneaks out, omits
information from her parents and is sucked into the "teenage" culture of the time. One Sunday Connie's family woke up and, "–none of them bothered
with church–" (Oates), Sunday, in religious settings is historically the Lords Day. Oates isolates this sentence with dashes to set it apart from the rest of
the story, foreshadowing the future satanic references. These dashes are used to symbolize that this Sunday takes a strange turn, and

Symbolism Of A Professor : Symbolism, The Heart, And...
Jake Wallis Mrs. Mary Smith AP Literature 20 September 2017 Symbolism in How to Read Like a Professor: Symbolism plays an important role
in literature and thus is discussed throughout Thomas C. Foster's How to read like a professor. Three major examples of symbolism discussed in
the book are weather, the heart, and flight. Rain is just rain, and snow is just snow, or is it? Maybe in everyday life, however, in literature, there is
so much more to the story. Foster provides many examples to demonstrate that weather is not just part of the setting. Going all the way to the Bible,
rain is the driving force behind the story of Noah and his ark. God sent a downpour lasting 40 days and nights. He was angry and disappointed with the

Thus, writers often use it to great effect as heart disease is so symbolically intertwined with emotional issues. In The Wench is Dead (1989) Foster
points out that our main character has died from issues with the heart, but the root meaning of this is actually that he is dying because of "the pain and
suffering, the loneliness and regret, of his sad–sack love life" which is symbolically connected to the heart, where emotions come from, and thus his
ailments of the heart can be directly tied to these emotional problems (Foster 142). Problems with the heart do not have to deal with disease
directly. Spanning back to the Greeks there are references to people having hard hearts. This, while not being something that can really happen, in
literature is symbolically a whole different story. A hard heart, whether it be physical or just figurative in a novel, is always symbolic of a closed
off, rock hard, uncaring heart. In "The Man of Adamant" (1837) a man feels like the world is so full of sinners that he decides he must live in a cave
to isolate himself from all human contact. This symbolic hardening of his heart is paralleled when, due to calcium in the cave, at "the end of the story
he turns to stone, or not him entirely, just his heart. The man whose heart was figurative stone at the outset has his heart turn to literal stone at the end.
It's Perfect" (Foster 142). What do a bird, a

Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies
Symbolism is everywhere. Symbolism occurs when something is meant to represent something else. It is a technique most commonly used in literature.
Whether the piece composed is a novel, a short story, or a poem, all authors want readers to comprehend more than just the literal meaning of what they
have written. Authors often utilize symbolism, using an object, person, situation, events, or actions to represent an idea or conception. In the novel
Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, many symbols are used. Golding's literary work contains many examples of symbolism to help
readers better understand the novel's themes. In the novel, a plane containing a group of British school boys crashes and the children find
themselves deserted on an uninhabited island. The group of boys are more or less divided into children roughly around the age of six, the "littluns",
and the bigger kids, who are between the ages of ten and twelve. With no adults present, the boys are left to fend and govern for themselves. Initially,
the boys attempt to create a society comparable to the one they had left behind. They elect a leader, establish rules, and assign jobs for each of them.
The longer the boys are stuck on the island, the more of their sense of civilization they lose, and, eventually, they revert to savagery. Golding uses the
technique of symbolism many times throughout this novel.

The Lottery Symbolism Analysis
An analysis of the symbolisms of
The Lottery
In the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, all the symbols in the story points toward one direction of the true human nature. Throughout the
story, there are also many examples of Irony, such as the names of the characters. Although the society inthe lottery is far from the society today, It can
relate to "Allegory of the Cave". "Next thing you know, they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work anymore," (p.219)The characters
in these two short story believed in totally different things but they both still choose to believe without any good reason. Symbolism plays a big part in
the story. There are many examples in the story of symbolism including the title, events, and name of characters.
The title of the short story, "The Lottery" is one of the biggest symbolisms in the story. The title "lottery" represents a number ticket that a person
buys and whoever that has the chosen number wins a very large amount of money. It is very ironic for Jackson to use the title "The Lottery"
because the word "lottery" is seen as winning or getting a good opportunity. However, the true meaning of the word "lottery" was not Jackson's
point. Jackson used "The Lottery" as the title to emphasize that in society, you don't always win and you are never guaranteed a win. Sometimes it's
not good to be the chosen one. The symbolism of the tile "The Lottery" stands out when the narrator states "The people have done it so many times
that they only half listened to the directions..." (p.219). This illustrates that the event of a lottery turned into a "tradition" that only the people in the
town can accept and understand. This story reminds many readers of the military draft. During WWII, many young men would get selected and sent
off to the army. It's a sacrifice and a must. This ties to the fact that the book was written in the time period of WWII. Often times, it doesn't make
sense but yet it's the only way to be fair because everyone has the same luck. In the story, stoning the person who picks the black dot has been the
tradition for the society. No one knows why the lottery happened and it's not documented but many remember, and it's a rule that every must follow

Summary Of Symbolism In Poe
Symbolism plays a very important role in stories. Poe, in particular, includes a lot of symbolism in his stories. Symbolism is an important element
when writing stories due to the fact that it helps create emotion and brings meaning to the story. For, example symbolism is used in "The Tell
–Tale
Heart", " The Utterly Perfect Murder", and "The Scarlet Ibis". All of these stories portray an important symbolic meaning.
In "The Tell–Tale Heart" the narrator was very agitated by the old man's vulture eye. The narrator is bothered by the old man's cloudy, pale blue eye,
which has incited madness in the narrator. Whenever the old man looks at him, his blood turns cold, and he becomes determined tokill him to get rid of
this curse. The narrator goes to the old man's house for seven days in a row to attempt to kill him but failed. "You cannot imagine how stealthily,
stealthily until at length a single dim ray like the thread of the spider shout out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye"(Poe,12). The narrator
wanted to kill the old man, but waited for him to open his eyes before he killed him on the eighth night. The old man's vulture eye symbolises a mental
condition like the corneal ulcer. But actually shows how the narrator was mad and eventually murdered the old man for his vulture eye. Furthermore,
there were many symbolic things about "The Utterly Perfect Murder".
In "The Utterly Perfect Murder" Doug wanted to get revenge from Ralph Underhill his childhood friend. Ever

White Elephant Symbolism

  • 1. White Elephant Symbolism The short story 'Hills Like White Elephant' starts with detailed description of a train station in Spain which turns into a dialog between an unmarried couple about an abortion. The story setting plays a big role in how the characters will act and how they will express their feelings. Along with the setting location, the time also plays an important role in the story. Hemingway uses a lot of symbols and figurative language of speech, so the time of the story was not clear for most of the readers. However, the story happened during the mid day during a very hot summer day which has a very important symbolism in the story. The mid–day represents that the day is not over, which symbolizes that they not have made they decision. The couple were at a critical moment of their relationship, which is when they must decide whether or not to have an abortion. Certain themes arise from this story such as choices and their consequences, doubt and ambiguity. "The hills across the valley of the Ebro were long and white. On this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun. [...] The American and the girl with him sat at a table in the shade, outside the building. It was very hot and the express from Barcelona would come in forty minutes. It stopped at this junction for two minutes and went to Madrid" (Page 176) The girl views having the child as a blessing and a great gift. However, the American sees it as an expenses and an obligation to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Symbolism In The Lottery The Lottery: Symbolism In story the Narrator is able to gather the ' attention and ultimately shock them with an unexpected ending; all of which help her emphasize the dark side of human nature and the evil that resides, sometimes, in those who we less expect it from. Jackson uses symbolism throughout the story that helps her set the mood and also makes the readers wonder and analyze the senseless violence and cruelty in their own lives. It all starts with the setting of the story. As Jackson describes "the morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full –summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green". It seems to introduce a joyful, happy tale in a normal quiet village; however, the truth lies ahead when the horrors of the lottery are discovered. The contrast of the setting and what actually takes place in the village, symbolize the fact that looks can be deceiving, and that sometimes, even beautiful things have dark sides. Then, Jackson writes "The people of the village began to gather in the square". The Village Square symbolizes the coming together of society, the grouping of people and; consequently, also the beginning of collective thinking. The lottery itself is presented as an annual event that is like any other local event in the village; she states "The lottery was conducted––as were the square dances, the teen club, and the Halloween program". For them, the lottery was a regular part of their lives, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Symbolism in “Cats” and “Shiloh” Jill McCorkle, along with Bobbie Ann Mason often use the symbolism of a short story to further the meaning of the piece. In the short story "Shiloh", Mason uses Leroy and Norma Jean to exhibit a further meaning of the story by effectively using symbolism. In addition to "Shiloh", McCorkle also uses symbolism in her story "Cats" to symbolise how cats can be related to humans in multiple ways. McCorkle describes the relationship between two cats, Pumpkin Pie and Possum, and their two human counterparts, Anne and Abbott, and how they share similar characteristics. In works such as "Shiloh" and "Cats", symbolism furthers the meaning of the story and leave the interpretation of the work up to the reader. In Bobbie Ann Mason's short story "Shiloh", Mason uses the marriage of Leroy and Norma Jean to symbolise how Leroy's life decisions can be detrimental to his marriage. Ever since Leroy was in an accident while driving a truck, he was able to stay at home with Norma Jean often. This time together make them realize how little they still loved each other. Mason uses the symbolism of him losing his job to represent how their love for each other has deterred over the course of their marriage. Bobbie Ann Mason use symbolism effectively when he writes "Norma Jean has reached the bluff, and she is looking out over the Tennessee River. Now she turns toward Leroy and waves her arms. Is she beckoning to him? She seems to be doing an exercise for her chest muscles. The sky is unusually ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Symbolism in "The Lottery" Essay To a first time reader, Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" seems simply as a curious tale with a shocking ending. After repetitive reading of Jackson's tale, it is clear that each sentence is written with a unique purpose often using symbolism. Her use of symbols not only foreshadow its surprise and disturbing ending but allows the reader to evaluate the community's pervert traditional rituals. She may be commenting on the season of the year and the grass being "richly green" or the toying with the meanings of the character's names but each statement applies to the meaning and lesson behind her story. As far as symbolism in objects, the most prominent and often mentioned is the "black box" from which the names are drawn from (Jackson 573). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Graves for permitted direction (Jackson 573). Ultimately there are only two views the townspeople have on the lottery; one is either for or against the ritual, but there are many reasons why one may form their opinion. Originally, winning of the lottery is meant to be of great honor, the sacrificial "lamb" offered to a Higher Power in hopes of receiving a plentiful season of crops for the overall community (Nebeker 8). "Life brings death, and death recycles life" (Griffen 5). Over time much of the accustomed songs and original ways of conducting the ceremony were lost becoming more of a nuisance (Griffen 5), and enabling the new generation to dream of a life without the lottery. Often it is the families who have experienced the lottery's winnings on a personal level that hold the strongest opinions. The Dunbar family lost their son to the lottery as well as young Jack Watson losing his father. Both families represent the pain of the personal loss caused by the lottery (Jackson 574–75). Jackson uses Old Man Warner as the town's consistent reminder of the origins and sanctity of the lottery and strongly blockading the community of change. His name refers to his constant warnings of what could come of losing the lottery and not respecting the tradition. After participating in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Trifles Symbolism "He didn't drink, and kept his word as well as most, I guess, and paid his debts. But he was a hard man, Mrs. Peters. Just to pass the time of day with him, (Shivers) like a raw wind that gets to the bone" (Glaspell). Minnie has suffered because of Mr. Wright's cold and unfeeling nature. "Her isolation, the gloom of her surroundings, and her husband's dispassion slowly drove her to the brink of insanity" (Galen). When only the bird was holding Minnie in the house was killed, she saw no reason that she should stay with her husband in that house. The men think women lack intelligence because of their gender. After, the women look at the canary, birdcage, and thequilt they figure out how the husband died. In the drama "Trifles," the quilt symbolizes Minnie's state of mind and it shows in her stitching how nervous and angry she feels. The patchwork of Minnie's life represents loneliness and isolation. Usually when women do patchwork it consists of a cloth that has meaning behind it to treasure it. Women in a group come together and work on their patchwork or they help each other, but Minnie had no one to help her and she felt lonely. Minnie's stitching goes from perfect and orderly to messy and uneven, the stitching shows how nervous Minnie was at the time. The events happening in the house is a reflect on Minnie's stitching. • 6. Symbolism And Symbolism In The Great Gatsby Throughout this novel we see many symbolic meanings, the author Scott. Fitzgerald intended it this way in order to send a message to the audience. We see many colors showing symbolism some of this colors are green, yellow, white, red, and gold. I am going to talk about the color green and how the author showed its impact and symbolism throughout this novel. These color often can be associated with people from the novel, for example the green can be associated with Gatsby, the red can be associated with Myrtle, yellow and white can be associated with Daisy, and blue can be associated with T.J. Eckleburg. This symbolic colors give great importance to the novel and it entertains the reader with this symbolic meanings throughout the novel. Green is the color of spring, which symbolizes confidence, vitality and hope. In the Great Gatsby, the color green is closely associated with the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. It symbolizes Gatsby's deep love to Daisy and his American Dream. But as the green light is always feeble and far away, it also indicates the disillusionment of his dream. In other words, the green light symbolizes hope. It symbolizes hope because, Gatsby sees this light as the hope of him and Daisy being together at one point. It shows Gatsby's love towards her because you can see how he really feels about her when he tries to grab the light by stretching his arm as far as he can. This shows how Gatsby desperately tries to get Daisy's heart but her heart is too far away from him. This light also signifies how close he is to Daisy, he think he can just grab her of how close he think he is to her, but this can also be a disillusionment to his dreams because the light is always distant and far from him and he will never grab it just like he could never have Daisy. Throughout this novel we can see Gatsby's affection towards this light, this light is very important and we see it being reference back and forth throughout the whole book. This color made the novel more vivid, more colorful, more dreamlike, more visionary and more profound. It helps the reader connect with the book. Story Of An Hour Symbolism "The Story of an Hour," written by Kate Chopin, is a short story featuring a woman with a feeble heart, and the story centers on Louise Mallard and her reactions to her husband's "death." Throughout "The Story of an Hour," Louise Mallard experiences various emotions that leave her wondering how she truly feels about the news of her husband's death. Before leaving her room and after hours of genuine depression, Louise Mallard realizes that her husband's death may have granted her something extremely valuable: independence. It is the practice of using symbols to convey a more profound thought and idea to the readers, which can be displayed in various ways, such as objects, places, events, and facts. Symbols play a significant role in written works, as it helps the readers to understand the intended meanings and words that are associated with the events in the story. Moving onto the next short story, Alexie's "Indian Education" tackles social issues of racial discrimination and stereotyping, which stems from his personal experiences. As he was growing up, Victor faces discrimination from white people which made his childhood full of sorrow, fear, and misery. Victor explains how Indians are often perceived as outsiders and failures. Victor lives in a community where there is a gap between people from different cultures. Alexie uses different symbols to emphasize racial discrimination. Cutting one's hair is one of these symbols which expresses Native Indian's culture and identity. Victor states "She sent a letter home with me that told my parents to either cut my 14 braids or keep me home from class" (Alexie 321). • 9. Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies If a group of young boys ended up deserted on an island for many months with no parental supervision, then one would conclude that matters on the island would begin to go haywire. British author, William Golding, narrates this exact plot in his popular novel Lord of the Flies. The underlying theme of the book is quite obvious: human nature. Throughout the novel, Golding portrays the theme with symbolism. One of the most obvious symbols that can be traced through the entire novel is Piggy's glasses. Piggy's glasses emphasize both the boys' inevitable path of destruction and their fall back to human nature. In the beginning, the glasses are in almost perfect condition. However, as the boys fall away from social structure, give into human nature, and begin to focus on other trivial distractions, the glasses shatter, and in the end, become useless. Golding uses foreshadowing, carefully chosen diction, and an extended definition in order to develop the symbolism of the glasses. Ultimately, the glasses symbolize clarity, and the boys' focus on rescue. As the glasses continue to break, the boys progressively lose sight of civilization and rescue, ultimately becoming savages. • 10. Lord Of The Flies Symbolism The human mind consists of two instincts that constantly have conflict with each other: the instinct to live by society's rules and the instinct to live by one's own rules. Eventually, everyone chooses to live by one or the other depending on how they feel is the correct way to live. In the allegorical novel "Lord of the Flies", William Golding utilizes these two instincts to create the theme of civilization versus savagery and in order to exhibit this, Golding uses a wide range of symbols. Golding's very first symbol is the conch as he uses it to show the start of civilization on the island, he then moves onto using the beast and its growth of relevance and finally uses the fire to finish the novel in an ironic way. At the start, the conch is shown as a symbol of civilization on the island, but as time progresses there is a decline of its importance and this is where the symbolism for savagery can be seen. Through the use of the conch and how it changes throughout the story, Golding conveys the theme easily by clearly portraying the role that the conch plays as well as changing its appearance and how the boys react to it throughout the novel. An example of the theme of civilization appearing in the conch can be seen when Ralph announces one of the first rules. "I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking" (Golding, 1954, page 31). It is evident that with the help of the conch the boys act in a civilized manner and law and order is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Symbolism And Symbolism In Wuthering Heights By Emily Bronte A heart shape symbolizes love, a star shape symbolizes fame, and a diamond shape symbolizes wealth. Isn't is crazy that a something physical can be utilized within writing to represent something emotional or figurative? Symbolism is the art of using an object or situation to represent an abstract idea. It is when an object, person, or situation have both a literal meaning, and a figurative meaning. Many authors use symbolism to add personality and emotion to their writing. Symbols within pieces of literature make the writing more enjoyable and interesting to read. Emily Bronte efficiently uses symbolism throughout her novel Wuthering Heights to enhance her writing and give her work more richness. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte takes place in England on two very contrasting estates, Wuthering Heights, owned by the Earnshaw family, and Thrushcross Grange, owned by the Linton family. Both of the estates in this novel can be considered symbolic. Wuthering Heights symbolizes the dark, cold, and gloomy nature of the circumstances around it. They even proclaim in the novel that the name of the estate is "descriptive of the atmosphere tumult to which its station is exposed in stormy weather"(4). The weather around Wuthering Heights also contributes to its symbolic meaning. The strong winds symbolize the tough times presented to those who live there, along with exemplifying the toughness of the inhabitants themselves. • 12. The Lottery Symbolism Tradition is highly valued by people throughout the world. In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" it is tradition to sacrifice a person once a year for good harvest. The villagers gather around Mr. Summers, who has a black box sitting on a stool, to see who will choose a folded piece of paper with a dot on it. Whichever family has the dot will have to draw again, and the family member who draws it next is stoned. The three–legged stool, black box, and stones used in the story all show a great deal of symbolism. The three–legged stool used to support the black box holds a few important meanings. One symbol of the stool is the tradition of the lottery. Every summer the stool is used to support the worn out black box. The stool "was put in the center of the square and Mr. Summers set the black box down on it" (228). Even though the villagers are aware of the stool, they do not feel inclined to move closer to it. The "villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool"(228). Keeping space between the stool gives the people a feeling of safety and security. The villagers hold fear towards the tradition of the lottery. The stool also represents death because the box that is set on it holds the piece of paper with the dot on it that determines one person's life. Even though the villagers hold the strong fear towards the stool and box, they are keeping a tradition that no one enjoys. Due to them being used to the event, they do not feel entitled to ... In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" symbolism is used heavily. To set up a tone that contrasts the initial atmosphere, to add mysterious feel to the story, and to hide what was happening in the story till the very end. In the beginning of "The Lottery", the setting is stated as, "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green."( Jackson, 247). This line gives us the impression that that this will be a cheerful day as if nothing could go wrong. The story's tone continues this way until the lottery within story is about ... For a minute, no one moved, and then all the slips of paper were opened."(Jackson, 250–251) at this point the tension had shot up all at once. The Hutchinson family had been chosen for the lottery and Tessie, a character introduced earlier, broke out in a sudden anger and what seemed like desperation as Mr. Hutchinson had gotten quite serious. The inference could be made that being chosen by the lottery isn't a good thing, and that something is very wrong with this lottery. They draw again but only for the Hutchinson family members; of which there were five. The focus eventually shifted to Tessie when she was holding her piece of paper: "It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal company office."(Jackson, 252). • 14. Symbolism In The Lottery Hidden Symbolism in "The Lottery" Shirley Jackson writes an intriguing tale titled "The Lottery" in which she conveys the meaning of a lottery through symbolism and emphasis of the physical elements of the black box, stones, and references to the Bible. Analysis of these symbols will reveal ideas of tradition, darkness, generational change, and illogical loyalty. First, the appearance of the black box symbolizes the occurring of the lottery precisely on July Twenty–seventh in the village square. Not the day before, and not the day after. The remaining 364 days in the year the black box is stored away and not mentioned: "the rest of the year, the box was put away, sometimes in one place. Sometimes another; it had spent one year in Mr. Graves's barn and another year underfoot in the post office." (138). When Mr. Summers arrives in the town square carrying the black box the other villagers know that the ritual of the lottery has begun. The black box is to the lottery as a Christmas tree is to Christmas. Every year we know that Christmastime has arrived when we first see the traditional Christmas tree. Similarly, the black box represents the lottery's tradition which is carried out within the society. Second, when the black box appears in the village square, the villagers receive a symbolical image that death is on the horizon. The emphasis put on the black coloring of the box symbolizes the negative connotation of the event. The event of the lottery is a joyful or enlightening occurrence, rather symbolism portrays the ritual as being serious, uncertain, and dark. Jackson describes that "a murmur of conversation" arose among the villagers at the sight of the "black wooden box." (138). The black box was placed on a stool in the center of town where villagers "kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool." (138). Third, Jackson's descriptions of the conditions of the wooden black box symbolize the changes and forgetfulness of the ritual. The black box has become "shabbier each year," losing its color and splintering. (138). Like the box, that faded and warped over time, the society's tradition gradually lost its meaning. It became an annual event they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Symbolism And Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies By William... *hook* A symbol is defined as a literary device where an object, person, or situation has a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story. Throughout the novel, author William Golding includes symbolism that hints at irony, foreshadowing, and a variety of themes. These symbols contribute to the depth and meaning of the story, allowing the characters to act under their influence. In Lord of the Flies, there is a numerous amount of symbols, such as the signal fire, the conch, and the ritual. The signal fire possesses many symbolic meanings essential to the story, Lord of the Flies. In the beginning of the novel, Ralph started a signal fire and instructed some of the boys to tend it. Because it was used to unite the boys after the plane crash, the conch became a symbol of civilization, power, and order. In assemblies, the conch gave the power of speech to whoever held it. When meetings were called, the boys listened to those who possessed the shell, as they still respected the "rule of the conch." Even Jack, who was not in favor of most rules, he respected the conch, as he "laid the conch with great care in the grass at his feet" after a meeting (127). Golding uses the conch as a reminder that tools of power are worthless without given meanings from the people. Without agreement to them, rules are powerless and serve no purpose to society, just like the conch. The conch was only an object before the boys gave it a purpose. Its power diminishes throughout the novel as Jack and his tribe disregard its rules and descend into savagery, thus making it useless. As well as the conch, the ritual dance developed in the story is also an important symbol. Another significant symbol in Lord of the Flies is Jack's ritual. The ritual dance and chant symbolizes the savagery and primitive religion that Jack and his tribe developed during the novel. At first, however, Jack used the ritual as a fun way to escape the hardships and new reality of the island. Its excitement and sense of belonging attracted other boys to Jack's new method of ... Goodman Brown is travelling down a path in a forest, and he converses with an old man. While Goodman Brown is resting in the forest, he hears Faith scream, and also envisions her pink ribbons falling off. Goodman Brown grabs the staff that the old man gave him, and it guides him to a witch meeting. They are converting the Puritan inhabitants into their sinful ways, and Goodman Brown is urged forward by the minister, and Deacon Gookin. Another convert is also ushered forward, but they are covered with a veil. Faith is revealed to be the convert, and Goodman Brown encourages Faith to resist the evil temptations. When Goodman Brown awakens, he is never the same as he was before, and he is gloomy for the rest of his life, even until his death. Throughout "Young Goodman Brown", by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author utilizes various examples of symbolism to inform the reader of his Christian beliefs, and to bring the major flaws of the Puritan community to light. In the beginning of the story, he is conversing with his wife, Faith, about how he must leave her behind for this one night. • 18. Symbolism In Catcher In The Rye Catcher in the Rye People need to read Catcher in the Rye at least once before they die. Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, is a book that takes the reader inside the head of Holden Caulfield, a depressed sixteen–year–old, who enters a strange series of adventures in New York City. Holden writes his story from a mental hospital in California, about how he was expelled from a fancy prep school, his experiences after spending a few days in NYC. The book has had critical success since its publication in 1951, selling sixty–five million total copies, after a splendid review from the New York Times. Catcher in the Rye is a great novel because of its subtle symbolism, amazing portrayal of Holden Caulfield and ends on a higher note than most people realize. Catcher in the Rye uses excellent symbolism to convey ideas to the reader. One might compare it to Lord of the Flies, an average book that teachers force students to read once in their lives for its use of symbolism. Personally, I think Catcher in the Rye has better symbolism than Lord of the Flies. This is because the symbolic objects are easier to identify than the objects in Lord of the Flies. As a result, the reader spends more time focusing on what the object represents, rather than wondering whether the object is symbolic or not. Take the red hunting cap, for example. This can be identified as a symbol based solely on the fact that these hats are almost never worn, whether the story's set in the 50's, the 1700's, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only did the soldiers carry heavy physical burdens, they carried heavy emotional burdens of fear and the need to maintain ties to home. According to Evans, "Grief, terror, love, longing–these were intangibles, but the intangibles had their own mass and specific gravity, they had tangible weight" (Evans, 2015). • 24. Symbolism And Symbolism In Roman Fever By Edith Wharton The short story, "Roman Fever", written by Edith Wharton, tells of the two American ladies who had an unexpected meeting in Rome. The two ladies, Mrs. Grace Ansley and Mrs. Alida Slade, were seated in a restaurant at a table where they faced the ruins of the Roman Forum. The setting triggers memories to soon fill the minds of the two women who had spent their younger years living in this very same place. Edith Wharton uses symbolism to characterize the life of lies the girls have lived in to illuminate the naivete of young girls in love. The title itself is an illusion that becomes symbolic for a young girl's love . Several centuries ago, Roman Fever was a term given to a deadly strain of malaria that swept across Rome. The disease killed thousands of people and ran ramped for many years. Both the disease and the women share many of the same qualities. For instance, when Mrs. Slade "seemed physically reduced by the blow– as if, when she got up, the wind might scatter her like a puff of dust" after beginning the conversation with Grace about the love letter (paragraph 95). The image symbolizes how a person might feel with the Roman Fever disease. Although no character is ill with the Roman Fever, Wharton reveals how a young girl's love can be like a disease as deadly as malaria. Wharton chose the title to further display how powerful the stronghold of jealousy was on the two ladies. For example, "You tried your best to get away from me, didn't you? But you ... Symbolism is defined using a concrete word, object, color, picture, name and so forth to strand for a name, abstract idea, image, or event. Of course, we see the same sled again at the end of the novel, as Jonas races downhill toward the village that's either a hallucination or the Elsewhere of his dreams. The Giver explicitly spells out the simile for you, there's not much more to say in the vein of "riding downhill = receiving memories." But we can think about what it means when Jonas actually does ride down the hill at the end of the novel. Until now, this action has been a sort of dream, someone else's memory, someone else's exhilaration, someone else's difficulty and pain. But now all of these things are very much Jonas's own. The novel even states explicitly that now Jonas is using his own recollections, rather than drawing on the fleeting memories passed on to him by The Giver. In short, his dreams have become reality, and the sled clues us into that. Of course, it's also possible that the final sled ride is just Jonas's memory, and that it's not happening at all, which would really shoot that theory down. There is definitely an association in The Giver between those who can receive memories and those who have light eyes. There isn't really any explanation for why this is, and it would pretty useless for us to sit around and speculate about why this is, logically or scientifically. • 26. Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies Symbolism Is Real The novel Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding is a very iconic book in my opinion. This novel consists mostly of symbolism. Lord of the Flies talked about the relationship of teenage boys who survived a plane crash together. The boys are all on their own and struggling. They encounter many incidences that comply symbolism. A couple of the acts of symbolism are the beast the boys kept imagining, Piggy's glasses, and the conch. The boys are all afraid of the beast, Piggy's glasses demonstrate the fact that he saw everything more clear then the boys and how he started the fire. Lastly, the last of the most important symbolisms in the novel is the conch, showing the civilization and order. The imaginary beast that scares the teenage boys stands as the savagery existing within all human beings. The beast scares all the boys but only Simon reaches the realization that exists within each of them.As I said before, the boys are afraid of the something in their imagination, which applies as the beast. This is apart of their imagination, which means the evil part among us. In the book, Piggy begins to say that the beast is just fear and Simon tells them, "Maybe, maybe there is a beast what I mean is maybe it's only us". This is saying that Piggy and Simon believe and are implying that the beast among them are themselves. Jack states that the beast can take shape in any form, which is typically saying that the beast can take over anyone. It is foreshadowing how the beast will soon come out of the boys and start a troubling and dangerous riot. The beast can't be killed because it is in every single one of us. The beast is the dark side inside all of us. The beast cannot be hunted and killed, because if the pig is apart of themselves, that means they are killing themselves. The boys are afraid of the beast, but only Simon realizes that they fear the beast because it exists in each of them. As the boys grow more restless, their belief in the beast grows stronger. By the end of the novel, the boys are leaving it and their actions is what brings the beast into their lives. The more crazy the boys are, it becomes more real. • 27. Symbolism In Literature During the process of writing literature, and for works of fiction especially, authors will often utilize a literary device known as symbolism, in order to further engage readers and add a deeper layer of meaning to their story. Any object, person, or situation, can be used as a symbol provided it represents an additional concept or abstract idea apart from its literal meaning. In several fictitious stories, the element of symbolism plays a crucial role in helping writers extend the meaning behind their works beyond the prosaic. Two notable pieces of literature that skilfully demonstrate how symbolic imagery can enhance the narrative include, Frankenstein and "Goblin Market"–written by Mary Shelley and Christina Rossetti, respectively. Within both of these literary works, symbolic imagery is effectively employed, by setting the tone of the story, adding depth to the characters, and expressing the significance of several complex themes. In Frankenstein, the use of symbolic imagery helps Shelley present various key themes instrumental in deepening the reader's understanding of her novel. One of the more prominent themes portrayed in Frankenstein, is that of an individual versus society. Throughout the tale, Victor's grotesque creation, to which he had "so miserably given life" (Shelley 59), struggles to find a place in a world determined to ostracize him due to his monstrous appearance. The creature's hideous features both literally, and symbolically, label him an outsider to society, which leads to him being mistreated by all those whom he encounters; this demonstrates Shelley's idea of how sometimes, it is "the terrors that stem from our elaborate civilization [that] may be far more threatening than those that primitive people attribute to demons" (Jung 63). Another major theme expressed within Frankenstein, was that of the duality of progress and innovation, symbolized by the recurring image of fire. For Frankenstein's creation, the discovery of fire granted him blessed warmth and security, that is, until he drew too close: "I found a fire...and was overcome with delight at the warmth I experienced from it. In my joy, I thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain" ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. Symbolism And Metaphors In Poetry Symbolism and Metaphor in Poetry The meaning of a poem can be expressed through literary devices such as a metaphor or symbolism. When looking at the poem "My Papa's Waltz", there is symbolism and there are also metaphors being shown. A metaphor is comparing two unlike things without using like or as and symbolism is to reinforce, add, and carry more meaning. In "My Papa's Waltz", there are numerous times that symbolism is enforced. For example, the lines: The whiskey on your breath Could make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death; Such waltzing was not easy. We romped until the pans Slid from the kitchen shelf; My mother's countenance Could not unfrown itself. (1–8) suggest that the child was living with an abusive, drunk father and a mother who could not stand up for herself or her child. Some symbols in the poem are waltzing and whiskey. Waltzing symbolizes the abuse the father did and whiskey symbolizes the drinking the father did. Those two things symbolize the meaning of the poem. The meaning of this poem suggests that alcoholics are mean and aggressive towards others. They are also hard to cooperate with, which might infer why the mother could not help her son during the traumatic beatings. Metaphors are also visible in the poem as well and are shown in the lines You beat time on my head With a palm caked hard by dirt, Then waltzed me off to bed Still clinging to your shirt. Symbolism can han have a major impact on a piece of literature, it can make a bad writing really interesting or it can make a good writing have a totally different meaning. Most readers miss the symbols the first time reading through the work and they don't get it until someone teaches them or if they read it again, sometimes the symbols are hard to detect in the story or poem, and other times they can be super easy to find such as a giant red A on your chest. In 1984 the manySymbol was pretty easy to figure out and a had a big meaning for part of the book which was really fascinating once you figured it out. Overall symbolism is very important and hopefully everyone who reads this will realize that. Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. There are hundreds of different symbols authors and poets use and even more ways for them to use each symbol. If you think about it anything really can be a symbol if the author wants it to be. There are some basic things to know about symbolism such as that the night often represents death and the morning usually represents the start of life, another big one to remember is that usually a storm is meaning that there is a conflict. There can be things as Broad as the sky or things as small as a cell used as a symbol. They enhance the theme, ideas, or characters in a story to make it interesting or help prove a point or ... • 30. The Lottery Symbolism Shirley Jackson's 1948 short story "The Lottery" takes place in a small town with a population of three hundred people. The lottery that occurs is not quite what the reader expects, and in order to grasp what the lottery is, the reader must understand the plethora of symbols that are utilized throughout the story. Jackson's use of symbols demonstrates the need for belonging, and the dangers and violence that can come with tradition. The firstsymbol that is evident to me throughout "The Lottery," is the black box. The black box is used annually for the lottery in the village, and is older than the oldest man in town (Jackson, 410). The color of the box is what first stands out to me. Black often represents negativity and power. The atmosphere on the day of the lottery is very tense, and while many of the civilians tried to hide their fear, they are scared for what the next few hours will entail, and who the unlucky person will be. The box is also extremely old as well, which symbolizes the danger of sticking with tradition for so long. While tradition is not always a bad thing, in this case it is. As stated throughout the text, this is an annual tradition of the village, and the young generation that wants to break the tradition is out of their mind according to the older civilians (412). The villagers are very unwilling to fix the box or use a new box, which also represents their stubbornness and mentality to be averse to any sort of change, which can be connected to their unwillingness to put a stop to the annual lottery. The annual lottery itself is a symbol of many of the motives of the villagers. Lotteries are risky, and based upon chance. This tradition is a major event and ordeal throughout the village, which is symbolic of the rituals that motivate our society as a whole. Often times we only think of traditions as things that we do every holiday, or rituals that we go through on special occasions. However, our society has an array of traditions that we go through each and every day, such as being expected to go to work on weekdays, or even participating in sports. Traditions also have a positive connotation, which can lead to the fear of accepting the faults in some customs. Lotteries The stones ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Scarlet Letter And Symbolism The Scarlet Letter and Symbolism Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many forms of symbolism in his book The Scarlet Letter. Symbolism is, according to Merriam–Webster, "the art or practice of using symbols, especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visual or sensuous representations." This means that the author was using objects to represent an action or idea. The symbols used in his book is either all physical or visible objects. Many of the symbols in the book are about characters.Nathaniel's ideas came from his bonds with the Puritans. According to CliffsNotes, "the Puritans had great difficulty in loving the sinner and hating the sin". With the Puritans strong hatred for sin,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This woman was brave enough to stand on the scaffold and confess her sin, but she never did say who the partner was in the act of the crime. Hester was also a symbol of peace. Towards the end of the book, she ends up turning into an adviser to some of the townspeople. Her kindness towards the town made most of them look at her from a different perspective. She would bring the homeless clothes that she made for them and they would criticize her afterwards. Children would call her names their parents would call her and women would give her the silent treatment or yell at her (Hathorne). That all changed towards the end. Instead of thinking of her letter as "adultery" it was now known as "able". Another symbol that Nathaniel used was the sunlight. The sunlight was known as happiness, joy, and truth. Sunlight would not be around Hester because ofthe scarlet letter, but it was okay around Pearl. "'Mother,' said little Pearl, 'the sunlight does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom'" (Hawthorne 202). After Hester takes off her scarlet letter the sunshine came out directly on top of Hester. It was no longer a dark place for her. As soon as her letter was put back on, the bright sun also disappeared. The sunlight is a symbol of truth in one particular way. Mr. Dimmesdale confesses his sin in the sunlight. All truth was let out as soon as he confessed. Not everyone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Symbolism In A Rose For Emily Symbolism is the use of an object or a word to represent an abstract idea. It's often used by writers to represent a hidden message or a hint in a story. The short Stories " A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker are great examples of the use of symbolism. In "A Rose for Emily" Faulkner uses symbolism to create a Story about a woman called Emily whose life is surrounded by mysteries, especially after the death of her father and the disappearance of her beloved Homer. Falkner uses symbolism to hide several messages through the Story which, in my opinion, sounds very morbid as things happen. In "Everyday Use," Alice Walker symbolizes her messages through a beautiful detailed story where Mrs. Johnson also... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emily herself is also considered a symbol. She has a great admiration for her father for her father who have always protect her from everything, specially from men. After he passes way Emily doesn't want to accept his death and becoming completely isolated on her house refusing any kind of change around her. Emily grows older and has a "sort of tragic and serene"(227) appearance. Her obsession of keep the same life style she used to have when her father was alive makes Emily set her own rules in Town. She wants to keep a verbal agreement her father had excusing her from paying taxes, refuses the modernization on mail, and keeps her "old fashioned" world inside of her house while the world outside is changing. Emily tries to keep the same "status" of the high society group she used to belong. Her attempt to stay in the past represents the decline of this social group, the representation of an "old society" refusing the new, the modernization, the technology. The symbols help the author of " A Rose for Emily" address the message of we can't avoid the changes around us. The world is in constant changing and we have to follow it. In " Every Day Use", Alice Walker also uses several symbols to transmit her message to the readers. Living in a rural area, Mrs. Johnson cleans her yard to the arrival of her daughter Dee who's coming to visit her from city. On the first paragraph she prepares the yard carefully and describes the yard carefully. "A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Symbolism Of The Arnold Friend There is a point in the adolescence of a child in which they encounter a fork, that can lead one of two ways. The path they end up on is determined by their personal feelings toward the world, the way they have been raised, and who they want to become in the future. In the short story titled, "Where are you going where have you been" this point is explicitly expressed in the title alone. One of the interpretations of this short story is that a man named Arnold Friend liberated a young rebellious girl, Connie, from the torment of her youth. However, in reality the audience is eluded to the symbolism that Connie is being pulled away from her "golden" innocence and into the arms of Satan himself. Arnold Friend exhibits Satanic traits, and on this symbolic level, a young girl being stripped from her childhood, and into an unforgiving world. The story reveals that Arnold Friend is no boy or friend, he is referred to as a devil–like character. As the story progresses, signs are observed that highlight the rebellious girl as she sneaks out, omits information from her parents and is sucked into the "teenage" culture of the time. One Sunday Connie's family woke up and, "–none of them bothered with church–" (Oates), Sunday, in religious settings is historically the Lords Day. Oates isolates this sentence with dashes to set it apart from the rest of the story, foreshadowing the future satanic references. These dashes are used to symbolize that this Sunday takes a strange turn, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Symbolism Of A Professor : Symbolism, The Heart, And... Jake Wallis Mrs. Mary Smith AP Literature 20 September 2017 Symbolism in How to Read Like a Professor: Symbolism plays an important role in literature and thus is discussed throughout Thomas C. Foster's How to read like a professor. Three major examples of symbolism discussed in the book are weather, the heart, and flight. Rain is just rain, and snow is just snow, or is it? Maybe in everyday life, however, in literature, there is so much more to the story. Foster provides many examples to demonstrate that weather is not just part of the setting. Going all the way to the Bible, rain is the driving force behind the story of Noah and his ark. God sent a downpour lasting 40 days and nights. He was angry and disappointed with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, writers often use it to great effect as heart disease is so symbolically intertwined with emotional issues. In The Wench is Dead (1989) Foster points out that our main character has died from issues with the heart, but the root meaning of this is actually that he is dying because of "the pain and suffering, the loneliness and regret, of his sad–sack love life" which is symbolically connected to the heart, where emotions come from, and thus his ailments of the heart can be directly tied to these emotional problems (Foster 142). Problems with the heart do not have to deal with disease directly. Spanning back to the Greeks there are references to people having hard hearts. This, while not being something that can really happen, in literature is symbolically a whole different story. A hard heart, whether it be physical or just figurative in a novel, is always symbolic of a closed off, rock hard, uncaring heart. In "The Man of Adamant" (1837) a man feels like the world is so full of sinners that he decides he must live in a cave to isolate himself from all human contact. This symbolic hardening of his heart is paralleled when, due to calcium in the cave, at "the end of the story he turns to stone, or not him entirely, just his heart. The man whose heart was figurative stone at the outset has his heart turn to literal stone at the end. It's Perfect" (Foster 142). What do a bird, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Symbolism In Lord Of The Flies Symbolism is everywhere. Symbolism occurs when something is meant to represent something else. It is a technique most commonly used in literature. Whether the piece composed is a novel, a short story, or a poem, all authors want readers to comprehend more than just the literal meaning of what they have written. Authors often utilize symbolism, using an object, person, situation, events, or actions to represent an idea or conception. In the novel Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, many symbols are used. Golding's literary work contains many examples of symbolism to help readers better understand the novel's themes. In the novel, a plane containing a group of British school boys crashes and the children find themselves deserted on an uninhabited island. The group of boys are more or less divided into children roughly around the age of six, the "littluns", and the bigger kids, who are between the ages of ten and twelve. With no adults present, the boys are left to fend and govern for themselves. Initially, the boys attempt to create a society comparable to the one they had left behind. They elect a leader, establish rules, and assign jobs for each of them. The longer the boys are stuck on the island, the more of their sense of civilization they lose, and, eventually, they revert to savagery. Golding uses the technique of symbolism many times throughout this novel. One symbol Golding uses is Piggy's glasses. Piggy is one of the boys who is deserted on the ... • 38. The Lottery Symbolism Analysis An analysis of the symbolisms of The Lottery In the short story "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, all the symbols in the story points toward one direction of the true human nature. Throughout the story, there are also many examples of Irony, such as the names of the characters. Although the society inthe lottery is far from the society today, It can relate to "Allegory of the Cave". "Next thing you know, they'll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work anymore," (p.219)The characters in these two short story believed in totally different things but they both still choose to believe without any good reason. Symbolism plays a big part in the story. There are many examples in the story of symbolism including the title, events, and name of characters. The title of the short story, "The Lottery" is one of the biggest symbolisms in the story. The title "lottery" represents a number ticket that a person buys and whoever that has the chosen number wins a very large amount of money. It is very ironic for Jackson to use the title "The Lottery" because the word "lottery" is seen as winning or getting a good opportunity. However, the true meaning of the word "lottery" was not Jackson's point. Jackson used "The Lottery" as the title to emphasize that in society, you don't always win and you are never guaranteed a win. Sometimes it's not good to be the chosen one. The symbolism of the tile "The Lottery" stands out when the narrator states "The people have done it so many times that they only half listened to the directions..." (p.219). This illustrates that the event of a lottery turned into a "tradition" that only the people in the town can accept and understand. This story reminds many readers of the military draft. During WWII, many young men would get selected and sent off to the army. It's a sacrifice and a must. This ties to the fact that the book was written in the time period of WWII. Often times, it doesn't make sense but yet it's the only way to be fair because everyone has the same luck. In the story, stoning the person who picks the black dot has been the tradition for the society. No one knows why the lottery happened and it's not documented but many remember, and it's a rule that every must follow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Symbolism is an important element when writing stories due to the fact that it helps create emotion and brings meaning to the story. For, example symbolism is used in "The Tell –Tale Heart", " The Utterly Perfect Murder", and "The Scarlet Ibis". All of these stories portray an important symbolic meaning. In "The Tell–Tale Heart" the narrator was very agitated by the old man's vulture eye. The narrator is bothered by the old man's cloudy, pale blue eye, which has incited madness in the narrator. Whenever the old man looks at him, his blood turns cold, and he becomes determined tokill him to get rid of this curse. The narrator goes to the old man's house for seven days in a row to attempt to kill him but failed. "You cannot imagine how stealthily, stealthily until at length a single dim ray like the thread of the spider shout out from the crevice and fell upon the vulture eye"(Poe,12). The narrator wanted to kill the old man, but waited for him to open his eyes before he killed him on the eighth night. The old man's vulture eye symbolises a mental condition like the corneal ulcer.
