When Sidney Stewart was freed in Manchuria in 1945 after 3 years of imprisonment by the
Japanese, the 6'3 American weighed 65 pounds (Goldstein). Stewart was an Army private stationed
in Manila in 1942 when they were overpowered by the Japanese. The 21 year–old wasn't the killing
type of soldier. Of course he killed when required, but he wasn't murderous. He'd been sent to
Luzon on the Bataan peninsula after the Japanese invasion and was soon captured after his group

Again, Stewart encountered another ethical dilemma with killing. He wrote, "yesterday we had
found the body of one of our men. His hands and feet were cut off, and bayonets were driven into
his stomach" (Stewart, 66). This undisguised, illegal, disrespect for their human enemy is enough to
infuriate anyone. After his group's surrender to the Japanese they were put into rows and searched.
He wrote, "I had a little medical kit strapped to my belt" (Stewart, 72). A guard emptied it and found
"a bottle of Sodium Amytal, a potent sleeping medicine. 'Yaroshi? Are they good?' I looked at him,
sensing his sense of superiority and hating him for it" (Stewart, 72–73). This is an entirely different
response to the Japanese man he'd encountered earlier. He told the guard "they are very good. He
gulped them down. I felt a small triumph. I knew he would live only a few minutes" (Stewart, 73).
He'd now experienced the brutality from the Japanese which aroused anger because his opinions of
the Japanese were no longer just the culmination of stories. This was real. He could have told the
guard that the pills would kill him but chose to let him die–and he felt good for it.

Bushido code is a life's training of sacrifice of victory or death. Bushido law shows no mercy and
discards any recollection of modern war laws. To be captured is seen as obscene and a disgrace to
oneself and one's family, in result the honorable way is suicide of oneself and really any enemy that
they are capable of taking. If the enemy disgraced themselves by being captured they are looked
down upon and treated ruthlessly. In turn they are not seen as humans, but are seen and treated as
low dehumanizing animals that are worthless. The Japanese used several unethical measures of
torture from overcrowding in train cars, malnutrition, and standing in the boiling sun suffering from
lack of water. These types of torture caused horrific trauma and left soldiers scarred from past
memories. The New York Times exclaimed "On the third day we were introduced to a form of
torture which came to be known as the sun treatment , we were made to sit in the boiling sun all day
without cover. We had very little water, our thirst was intense. Many of us went crazy and several

American and Filipino soldiers were constantly introduced to new slightly odd low fund and

Before during the first Sino Japanese war the Japanese had invaded the city of Nanking in China .
They went around torturing the families and causing pain to everyone. They would burry civilians
alive and throw kids in wells. Just like Hitler the Japanese had camps were they would torture and
starve people. In these camps they would also force labor and had people working in the heat. In
WW2 1942 the Japanese attacked and bombed Australian boats in Singapore. The Australian boats
had 65 nurses except only 50 were able to swim away. In the battle versus the Philippine the

The Japanese saw the U.S. as a threat to their expansion aspirations in Asia. Their strategy was to
find a way to impede the U.S. long enough to finish their goal. This resulted in the attack of Pearl
Harbor. During this time, Japanese also set up offenses in American controlled regions in the Pacific
such as the Philippines, Guam and Midway islands. Under the leadership of General Douglass

What Is Nathan's Guilt
Nathan's source of guilt stems from his escape of the Bataan Death March. Nathan left the battle
after being wounded, and right before the rest of his company died. Although he miraculously
survived the horrific incident, he never got over the "suspicion of his own cowardice". His guilt over

The Effect Of Einstein's Attack On Pearl Harbor
In Einstein's letter to Roosevelt, he talks about how the United States lacks Uranium, which is a key
ingredient to making a bomb. He knew that Germany had a strong amount of Uranium and didn't
want them to succeed before the United States. This pushed the United States even more to make a
bomb which would, later on, be dropped on Japan in Okinawa. Two years after Einstein's letter
Japan invaded Pearl Harbor, killing over 2,000 American soldiers. The attack on Pearl Harbor is

"Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides is a marvelous novel. It was composed shrewdly well while
giving realities and dates that accompany the story. His focuses are depicted from what he saw as it
was a true to life book. The points of interest experience the sixth Ranger Battalion going past
adversary lines in endeavor to save Americans and British POW's, the camp of numerous U.S.
troopers in Japan, the Bataan demise walk, and how they all wanted to get away. It goes to detail on
how Japanese warriors carried on through the tormenting of Americans and Philippines, how the
Embargo set by the U.S. constrained the Japanese to take extreme measures in infantry. Hampton
Sides' recounts his story which opens the critical thinking of a normal human
