Essay On White Rose Resistance
While Hitler kept Jews in the concentration camps, there were some Jewish and non–Jewish people
that tried and stop this brutality or help the Jews. They knew what hitler was doing with the Jews
and his plans. They tried to do something to try and help the people. Some of them where The White
Rose society, Rose Blanche, and Resistances in the ghettos.
The white rose society were some of the first ones to start this revolt against hitler. Alexander
Schmorell and Hans Scholl , both of whom were studying medicine, were the first LMU students to
consider mounting an active campaign of resistance against the Nazi regime. Within two weeks,
between the 27 June and 12 July 1942, they wrote, printed and distributed the first four "White
Rose" protest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their main goals were to organize uprisings, break out of the ghettos, and join partisan units in the
fight against the Germans. The Jews knew that uprisings would not stop the Germans and that only a
handful of fighters would succeed in escaping to join the partisans. Still, some Jews made the
decision to resist. Weapons were smuggled into ghettos. Inhabitants in the ghettos of Vilna, Mir,
Lachva , Kremenets, Częstochowa, Nesvizh, Sosnowiec, and Tarnow, among others, resisted with
force when the Germans began to deport ghetto populations. In Bialystok, the underground staged
an uprising just before the final destruction of the ghetto in September 1943. Most of the ghetto
fighters, primarily young men and women, died during the fighting. The Warsaw ghetto uprising in
the spring of 1943 was the largest single revolt by Jews. Hundreds of Jews fought the Germans and
their auxiliaries in the streets of the ghetto. Thousands of Jews refused to obey German orders to
report to an assembly point for deportation. In the end the Nazis burned the ghetto to the ground to
force the Jews out. Although they knew defeat was certain, Jews in the ghetto fought desperately

Aim:
To determine whether or not Sophie Scholl could be considered a popular hero due to her ethics and
beliefs and how they influence people.
Hypothesis:
Sophie Scholl can be considered a hero because her ethics and beliefs changed the way many people
in Germany felt about Hitler's leadership style.

This factor does make the research obtained valid as different views were mainly in support of
Sophie, even if in some cases they supported the Nazi Regime (Source 5). "By means of gradual,
treacherous, systematic abuse, the system has put every man in a spiritual prison" (Source 1); people
to this day look back on that fearful time in history and try to learn from the events and not have a

The White Rose Moral Courage
The courageous people that took part in the White Rose acts are the best definitions of showing
moral courage. The White Rose's acts that happened during World War II made a big difference. A
group of young men and women stood up for what is right, and we need more of that in this world.
We need more moral courage in this modern day world. Many people do not know about the White
Rose actions but, everyone should. Everyone should also look into their actions, take them into
consideration and learn from them.
In Nazi, Germany during World War II in 1942 a group including Willi Graf, Alexander Schmorell,
Kurt Huber Christoph Probst, Hans Scholl and his sister Sophie Scholl formed a non–violent
resistance group that made leaflets. The group was influenced by a young German youth group that
Chrisoph Probst was a member of. Hans Scholl was a member of the Hitler Youth until 1936 and
Sophie was a member of the Bund Deutscher Mädel. Willi Graf was a member of Neudeutschland, a
young catholic youth association. and the Grauer Orden. The group they all formed was called The
White Rose. The group co–authored six anti–Nazi Third Reich political resistance leaflets
(Lisciotto).
On three nights in February 1943 Alexander Schmorell, Hans Scholl and Willi Graf used tar and
paint to write phrases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, we need more moral courage to make this world better. I feel like there is no better
example of moral courage for us to look up to than the members of the White Rose group. They are
perfect because they can show what the youth in this world today should strive to be like and who
they should look up to as heroes. Remember, the definition of moral courage is the courage to take
action for moral reasons, despite the risk of the consequences good or bad. We need more people to
do this in this world. In other words, more people like the extraordinary people in the White Rose

Endangered Sophie Sparknotes
Endangered The book Endangered is about the journey of survival and the connection between a
young American girl (Sophie) and a bonobo monkey (Otto) in The Democratic Republic of the
Congo. Sophie's mother lives in the Congo and runs a bonobo sanctuary. While on her way to the
sanctuary to visit her mother for the summer, Sophie sees a man on the side of the road with a
bonobo. She notices how malnourished and how bad the bonobo looks and against the rules of her
mother, Sophie purchases the bonobo. When she reaches the sanctuary her mother is upset because
even though she had good intentions of saving the bonobos life, bargaining with the man Sophie
inadvertently promoted the illegal sale of the endangered bonobos. While at the sanctuary Sophie
struggles to improve Otto's health and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has had many conflicts. The people of the country are poor,
but interest is shown in the country because of mining. When war did break out the rebels enslaved
and took people to work in the mines. Also, with the status of the country, the bonobos are
becoming more and more endangered. This is in part because of poverty. The bonobos are being
poached and killed for their meat and people even use their body parts because of superstitions. On
top of this, the bonobo's are also losing their habitat. With an increase in a growing population more
land is demanded taking from the bonobos. Logging companies are pushing further and further
leaving the bonobos at risk for losing their habitat.
Overall I enjoyed the book. I understand that this story is fictional, but a lot of the references reflect
real life in the Congo. The country with a complicated past and the turmoil that can still be seen
today. It is fitting that Eliot Schrefer titled this book Endangered. It can make reference to the
dwindling numbers of the bonobos, but also to Sophie's exposure to danger while in the

Sophie Germain April 1, 1776 is an important date. Marie–Sophie Germain was born unto
Ambroise–Francois and Marie Germain. Sophie Germain was born into a very wealthy family to
say the least. Like any parents in the 1700 's, Ambroise and Marie did not want Sophie to grow up
and be a mathematician, but that is later. First we must know what was happening around the time
of Sophie 's birth. Although Sophie Germain was born into a very wealthy family, she was not of the
aristocratic status. Soon after the birth of the great mathematician ... Show more content on

It is said that one of the many great things about Sophie Germain was that she taught herself through
the undergraduate level, unlike her predecessors such as: "Hypatia, Maria Agnesi, and Émilie
Châtelet. You have to have a certain level of drive in you to learn so much of one subject just for the
pure enjoyment of it. Sophie had this drive. Because of her parent 's protest, she sat in her room at
night by the fire studying for hours on end. When her parents found out that she was staying up in
order to betray their wishes, they took away all of her light sources thinking that this would stop her
foolishness. This only drove her more. Mathematicians such as J. L. Lagrange were blown away by
the fact that the written works he was receiving were written by a young woman as opposed to a
male. "Monsieur Le Blanc" (a.k.a Sophie Germain) was never married. As for the works of Sophie
Germain, one of the works she if known for is one of her first on Fermat 's Last Theorem. When
Sophie worked on Fermat 's Last Theorem she "had adopted a new approach to the problem which
was far more general than previous strategies. Her immediate goal was not to prove that one
particular equation had no solutions, but to say something about several equations. In her letter to
Gauss [a seasoned male mathematician of her time] she outlined a calculation which focused on

Machinal By Sophie Treadwell
Sophie Treadwell's Machinal is a strangely riveting play so filled with unlikable characters that it
makes one want to scream and throttle which ever one is closest to hand without prejudice as to
which persona it might be as they are all equally detestable in their own way. Unfortunately, the
infuriating characters are exactly what make the play so fascinating. Each of the characters in the
play, originally intended to display that life is an inescapable machine, exhibits many disturbing
psychological qualities, and the main character suffers a slew of near textbook psychological
misfortune. Whether Sophie Treadwell created her play with this facet intentionally or not is
unknown, but the examples are so perfect it is difficult to think ... Show more content on

Helen would have also been more prone to abuse, and other effects of low self–esteem. Some of the
narcissistic characteristics Helen's mother exhibits are her utter disregard for everything Helen says,
speaking over her, her attention only engaged once benefits to her are involved, for instance: "Vice
president! His income must be– does he know you've got a mother to support?" (Treadwell 17), and
immediate overreaction to any criticism. Many children with narcissistic parents may have grown
up in both neglectful and verbally abusive situations, but Helen's situation would have been
compounded beyond that as she seems to have grown up with only her mother as a parental figure.
Helen's father was revealed in the second act as, seemingly, long dead, leaving Helen alone to a
single, powerful, influence. The Second character who exhibits the next most pressing issue is
Helen's husband, Mr. J, who proves himself to be a sexual predator. Helen's physical repulsion such
as when the Telephone Girl asks her "Why'd you flinch, kid?" (Treadwell 10) and her reactions to
Mr. J touching her should really have been plenty of notice for him to stop. In the beginning, Mr. J
has both status and rank, as her boss, over Helen, and this puts the relationship on shaky and
inappropriate grounds due to Mr. J's power over her. That he constantly touches her, treats her
differently, and makes her feel indebted to

Summary Of The Noble Treason
For my book review I read the book, A Noble Treason written by Richard Hanser. The Noble
Treason is about Sophie Scholl and the White Rose Revolt against Adolf Hitler. Taking place in
1942, Sophie Scholl and her older brother Hans were bright, young university students in Munich
University in Germany. They had once been passionate supporters of the German renewal promised
by National Socialism, as members of the Hitler Youth. But as their comprehension of Nazi
barbarism grew, so did their moral outrage towards Adolf Hitler. In result, Sophie and Hans Scholl
formed a small group of like–minded friends, which originally included a student of philosophy, two
medical students, and a fifty–year–old professor. They were all identified as Christians from ...

He was meaning to show everyone that they are all equal and that every single one is the same no
matter their differences. In my opinion, this true story showed determination and willpower because
The White Rose was persisting in making their country better, not only for themselves but for future
generations. They risked their lives not caring if they broke the law. They knew that Adolf Hitler
was afraid of anyone corrupting the influence that he had over the people. In addition, I believe that
he wanted to recall that even in the harshest times, people can still have hope and stand up for
themselves. For instance, The White Rose changed many perspectives of others by simply
publishing six leaflets which exposed Hitler's cruel ways. He wanted to emphasize and teach others
that everyone has the freedom to think for themselves. Nobody should force one another what to do
or what to think because it is their choice whether or not do will or will not do

Sophie Germain Research Paper
Sophie Germain was born on April 1, 1776, in Paris, France to Ambroise–Francois and Marie
Germain. She grew up in a middle class family, yet possessed a reasonable wealth due to her father's
work as a merchant and later as the director of the Bank of France. Sophie first became interested in
mathematics due to her long periods of time within her father's library, brought upon by the
dangerous revolts within Paris during the 1800s. During her time in the library she came across a
story in which a man was killed due to his engrossment with a mathematic problem, this resulted in
the sparking of Sophie's interest. Sophie soon too became engrossed by mathematics and went to
great lengths to teach it to herself, even with the constant disapproval ... Show more content on

After many trials, errors, and memoirs later Sophie finally earned the interest of an academy on her
third try, in which they allowed her to be the first unwed women to attend the Academy of Science's
sessions. Years after Sophie's work in Fermat's Last Theorem she was finally able to perfect it and
"was the greatest work of [her] career". Sophie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1829, yet it did
little to deter her from continuing her work in mathematics and even began studying in philosophy
and psychology. Years later after having been diagnosed "her paper on curvature of elastic surfaces
was published in the scientific journal 'Crelle's Journal'." Because of Sophie's contribution, her
former mentor Gauss convinced the University of Gottingen to award her an honorary degree.
Tragically on June 27, 1831, in Paris, France Sophie Germain lost her fight with breast cancer
before she could receive the award. Even though Sophie Germain died at the fairly early age of 55
she left behind a tremendous amount of work that has continued to fuel todays mathematic
advancements and encourage women to revolt against societies'

I was given the opportunity to visit Sophie at her school for a few hours. During that time i observed
Sophie writing on a white board. Not wanting to disturb Sophie i asked her paraprofessional why
she was not writing in a notebook like the rest of the kids in her class. She informed me that sophie
prefers to write on a lined whiteboard but they are working on getting her to write more on the
notebook. I speculate that the smooth surface of the whiteboard is easier for Sophie to work with,
given that she has had trouble with her gross motor skills throughout her young life. During story
time i observed sophie actively engaging in question and answer time. I noticed she payed close
attention to her teacher , and rarely was distributed. When

Without the drawings of the characters there would be nowhere to start. The characters, castle and
the land scape are all kin parts that play roles in the movie. The people who created the movie had to
figure out what the characters would look like giving the information already given in the book.
Howl is to be a handsome young man, whom the designers did really well on, who can sometime be
courageous, yet stubborn. Howl design with blue eyes and blond hair suits him very well. Sophie is
designed to have a beautiful brown hair in the beginning but it becomes a moon lit sliver color later
in the movie. She has less respect for herself in the beginning but gains confidence in herself
through the movie. The castle is its own unique design. The castle has a beast like shape and steam
pumping out of the top of roof. The whole castle moves by the fire demon Calicfer using magic to
move the legs on the bottom. What makes the castle look better is the landscape that it is in. The
landscape has breathed taking hills and mountains. There are grassy plains and the buildings in the
town are just beaming with color. There is so much texture and time put into each little detail in the
background or landscape. The viewer will appreciate the time and effort put into all of the character,

her first name is Marie, she went by Sophie (Sophie, Famous). Since Sophie was a girl, she was not
eligible to go to school because of her gender. Her father had an interest in mathematics she began
to read the books on the subject of mathematical theory that belonged in her father's library, in her

Latin and Greek, with the acknowledgement of these languages she was able to read the works of
Leonhard Euler and Isaac Newton. The only famous teacher she had was Joseph Louis Lagrange

Sophie Scholl underwent peer pressure yet maintained who she was throughout facing conflict.

An Analysis Of Siri Hustvedt's Living With Strangers
Living with strangers
When moving from a small community, into a larger alien community, a whole new ruleset applies.
When you move from a small town in Minnesota to an enormous city such as New York, you are
very likely to feel alienated and out of place. In Minnesota, Siri Hustvedt greeted every person she
passed on the street, not because she wanted to, but because if she didn't, she would be seen as a
snob. When she moved to New York, she quickly discovered how impractical and unsound it would
be to greet every person she passed. This is exactly what she talks about in her 2002 essay "Living
With Strangers". The essay speaks of Siri Hustvedt's life events. The events are not told in a
chronological order, and therefore, the essay is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She does this by telling us various stories of how she, her daughter and her husband have acted in
different situations where a "madman" has broken the social norm, and actually acted up in public.
In all the stories, no one has reacted when they "madman" has gone crazy, the onlookers didn't react.
Neither did Hustvedt, her daughter or her husband. They just followed the "PRETEND IT ISN'T
HAPPENING" law. This is again very relatable to the readers. It is quite rare, to see people getting
involved in something that is happening right next to them. This is what Siri Hustvedt discusses in
her third part of the essay. Siri Hustvedt has up until now, been very critical of the entire concept
concerning the "PRETEND IT ISN'T HAPPENING" law, but now she acknowledges some few
advantages with this law. She does this with an anecdote that her husband told her. It was about a
man, who told another, very tall and strong man "Excuse me, sir" "for bothering you, but I want to
point out that it's against the law to smoke on the subway" . To which the man answered, "Do you
wanna die? ". This anecdote is used, to illustrate the positive sites of the "PRETEND IT ISN'T
HAPPENING LAW". This threat, was most likely just a threat, but it illustrates, as Siri Hustvedt
said: "Taking action may be viewed as courageous or merely stupid" . However, Siri Hustvedt does
not believe this is a very common thing, and to ensure us it isn't she takes use of another story,
which was told to her by her daughter, Sophie. Sophie, who was 14 years old at this time, was riding
the subway, when a stranger suddenly eyeballed her, and then proceeded to publicly announce his
love for her. Sophie did her best, and followed the "PRETEND IT ISN'T HAPPENING" law, but
she was still very uncomfortable with the situation. This was until the person sitting next to her
interfered, and actually calmed Sophie down

Sophie Scholl was brought up as a Lutheran Christian and then later joined a Nazi organization,
which she initially enjoyed and had received a promotion, but however, became uneasy when her
conscience being Christian did not line up with the creeping Nazi philosophy of the organization. In
1935, Hitler passed the rules Nuremburg laws which discriminated Jew's, which banned them from
going to many public places and prohibited them from joining groups that Sophie was in, which
made her upset and more critical to Nazi Germany. In 1937, her brothers and a few of her friends
were arrested for being a part of a German Youth Movement which reinforced her hostility to the
Nazis. Later in 1942 her father was sent to prison after referring to Hitler as "God's Scourge." In that
same year a non–violent anti–Nazi resistance group was formed by her brother Hans Scholl and a

up for what he knew was wrong or to conform with the rest of his people. If he wasn't brave, he
wouldn't have been able to stand up to the other guards. And, although he died that night, his efforts
weren't in vain. Rescued months later, some of the people in those lines survived the camp. Another
story of courage is about Anusha Jeyapraba, from Sri Lanka, an island off of India. She watched a
bloody war and saw violence constantly, for most of her life. An article about her new, beatific life
says, "It was sheer resiliency and courage that helped her rise up each time she encountered another
difficulty. Thanks to this resiliency Anusha is rebuilding her life"("Courage, Resiliency and USAID
Support"). She persevered, had courage, and was able to live a happy life after her conflict. On the
other side of that, Sophie Scholl, sadly, was killed after she was caught with the anti–Nazi
pamphlets. But, even in the end, she had courage. Jacob Hornberger describes the confidence

Sophie Germain Essay
Marie Sophie Germain was born in Rue Saint–Denis, Paris, France, on April 1, 1776, in a wealthy
Persian family. Ambroise–Francois, her father, was a rich man who was assumed to be a wealthy
silk merchant, or a goldsmith. Ambroise was elected as the representative of the bourgeoisie to
Etats–Généraux en 1789, which had involved his daughter to witness many discussions with her
father and his peers. When she was 13, The French Revolution broke out. Enforcing her to remain
indoors,as she turned to her father's library to take away her boredom where she became interested
in mathematics. Pouring her time into each book as she had taught herself Latin and Greek, allowing
her to read other famous mathematicians work such as Isaac Newton.

She published philosophical works clarifying facts and generalizing the into laws to form a system
of sociology and psychology. Years later, Germain was the first person to provide proof of Fermat's
Last Theorem, that has been a struggle for mathematicians for the past 200 years. "That if xn + yn =
zn, then neither x, y, nor z can be a natural number if n is greater than 2, stated from Fermat's Last
Theorem" (Barrow–Green). Germain used her proficiency on prime numbers to help to prove this
theorem. Successful from her work, she published her deeds in a supplement to her acquaintance
Adrien–Marie Legendre's work Théorie des nombres." (The Remarkable Life of Sophie Germain)
Despite her achievements, in 1829, she discovered that she had breast cancer. She continued her
work and published "her deeds on the curvature of elastic surfaces and also published principles of
examination that later led to the discovery of the laws of equilibrium and the movement of elastic
solids." (Famous Mathematicians–Sophie Germain) In addition, one of her earliest mentors, Gauss,
convinced the University of Gottingen to give Sophie an honorary degree, but before she could
receive it, she died on June 27,1831, at the age of 55 to only be seen as a single woman with no

The Roles Of Sophie Scholl
There were about 67 million people living in Germany during the time of the Holocaust, however
only a few had the bravery to speak out against the Nazis. Sophie Scholl was one of these
courageous people. It is evident that Sophie Scholl is a great role model who impacted Germany
because she wrote anti–Nazi propaganda, fought for what she thought was right, and Germans today
admire her.
Sophie grew up during the Nazi takeover in Forchtenberg, Germany. Unlike most German families,
hers had their own ideas about the Nazi party. Her father, who was a former mayor of several small
towns in Germany, warned Sophie and her brothers about the new regime eventually abusing their
power (Biography in Context). Her parents also encouraged their children to "think for themselves
and speak their minds" (Student Resource Center). This parental support foreshadows what Sophie
and her brother would become. The Scholl household was very supportive of their family members.
When Sophie was twelve years old, she joined the League of German Girls. This was a "pseudo–
Nazi organization" (Pettinger). These organizations, called Hitler Youth Organizations, "trained and
educated" German teenagers to become "loyal followers of the Nazi Party" (Zapotczny). Initially,
Sophie excelled in the League of German Girls. She enjoyed the activities and was even promoted
to a leadership position. However, Sophie eventually became skeptical about the organization she
was in (Pettinger). As was typical

Change Of Sophie
Throughout the book sophie goes through a lot of changes, and she learns more about herself. Her
personality gradually changes over time as she discovers more about who who she really is, and
who she's meant to be. In this chapter I will be walking through all the changes sophie has gone
through, and who she was before she found out she was an elf, and what she has become. In the
beginning of the story, sophie's starts out as this 12 year old girl who is a senior in high school and
is, still smartest kid in her grade. At her school, she is looked down upon by her classmate. Due to
this, Sophie knows better than to get her hopes up on having friends, because when Sophie was at a

She is a telepath, meaning that she has the ability to read others minds. Not only can she read minds,
but not even the best telepaths can read her mind, but she can read theirs when others can't.
Not only Does Sophie have amazing and telepath skills, but she has a power that only telepath elfs
have, but even then, it is a very rare power for a telapath, she can lift objects with her mind. I know
this because when she came across an old man who is over 1000 years old, he watched as she
levitated 10 goblets and 3 chairs, then told her "your talent is extraordinary, such talent should not
go to waste" (Messenger, 59). This shows that sophie is a very powerful elf, and not even the oldest
of elves have seen such a powerful elf.
To rap up, so far Sophie has developed, and learned lot throughout the book, she has also developed
characteristics that she didn't know about herself, and is continuing to learn more and more about

Messages In The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel
Author, Elie Wiesel in his morose yet optimistic speech, "The Perils of Indifference," asserts that
indifference is dangerous and we as individuals, a nation, and a global community should learn from
the indifference of the past. He supports his message by revealing his past experience through the
eyes of a young boy who witnessed the Holocaust and America's' eyes full of rage as a reaction to
the survivors' pain. Additionally, Wiesel describes many other events that have occurred, for
example, like Cambodia, resulting in violent suffering and mass indifference. The sinful act of
indifference is something that everyone should fear as Wiesel describes it. Lastly, he warns the
audience that we need to prepare ourselves for what is yet to come, for the past is going to repeat
itself if we do not learn from our mistakes. Wiesel's purpose is to inform readers about indifference
as well as the negative outcomes that come with it in order to bring about a change in humanity. The
author establishes a serious tone for readers by using stylistic devices such as repetition, rhetorical
questions, and imagery in order to achieve his message that indifference is a danger we the future
will interact with, but still hope never comes.
Horrifyingly so, the holocaust is not the only indifferent caused event Wiesel mentions in "The Peril
of Indifference." An event much like the holocaust, Cambodia had labor camps where "physical
abuse, disease, exhaustion, and starvation were extremely prevalent," killing about 1.7–2 million
Cambodians during Khmer Rouge's 4 year reign. Although "scholars and others in the West tried to
bring attention to the atrocities being committed," no one actually stepped in to help prevent this
from continuing. No one in Cambodia resisted because they couldn't think of a plan to since the
"doctors, teachers and other educated people, as well as monks, the rich, and anyone perceived to be
in opposition were tortured and killed." "Children and babies were not exempt from their cruelty; it
was often noted "to stop the weeds you must also pull up their roots." "Many of the Khmer Rouge's
members escaped to Thailand" towards the end of Khmer Rouge's reign only because they were

evidence of the present–day capitalist paradigm? There are clearly confronted positions in the chick

independent woman; and those who claim it to reveal the reality of women grappling with modern

Kinsella's heroine encompasses opposing characteristics which make the character very relatable to

But you have always been tenacious. You have always refused to give in, whatever factors are
mounting against you' are the comforting words of Elinor, the ice–queen mother–in–law character,
to Becky. In other words, Becky portrays an image of a sassy and klutzy, high–spirited and
dramatic, independent and romantic family lover woman. On top of that, she struggles to balance
her fluctuating financial situation due to her addiction to shopping. Becky's character differs from
that of the fierce, unsentimental, practical, survivor–like heroine Katniss Everdeen, from 'The
Hunger Games' by Suzanne Collins. Katniss' character reflects the image of an efficient woman,
while in Becky's character positive and negative features fuse together to mirror the complete
picture of a present–day woman. Sophie Kinsella justifies her view of women when she says: 'I
think it's more realistic to represent a woman having all these facets, than say, OK, you're
intelligent, so I've got to write you as all competent, which I think is an unfair ideal'. In short,

Starting a Spark
"Having courage isn't the same as having no fear. It's being afraid and pushing forward anyway."
Although spoken by a fictional character, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III from Dreamworks
Dragons, this quote holds a very real truth. This truth is especially evident in the lives of siblings
Hans and Sophie Scholl, founders of a peaceful anti–Nazi group in Germany called The White
Rose. After realizing the errors of Hitler's ways, they started writing anonymous leaflets to expose
him, which they knew could cause them a lot of trouble. Despite the looming danger of an entire
nation pining against them, the Scholls persevered courageously to make a difference in their own
setting in a way that inspires me to do the same. In the 1930s, German teenagers everywhere were
joining the Hitler Youth, a movement designed to separate the weak children from the strong adults,

Among the good–natured types is moral courage. Moral courage is being persistent in the face of
adversity when everyone else is against what you know is right. This can be manifested in a variety
of ways. It can be as trivial as standing up to a bully or as extreme as going up against an entire
nation to spread a message it does not want to hear. The White Rose knew that Hitler was wrong,
yet the wool had been pulled so thickly over everyone's eyes, that it would take far too long to
remove it all before the authorities exterminated the bugs trying to undo their work. Even so, the
White Rose knew that all it takes is a spark to start an inferno. As little progress as it may have
seemed they made, it graduated into something phenomenal. In the words of Sophie Scholl,
"Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others.
They just do not dare to express themselves as we did"

Sophie Germain's Contribution To The Middle Age Of Paris
Sophie Germain was born April 1st, 1776 in Paris, France. Sophie's family was rich and counted as
upper Classmen. Sophie was the middle child out of 2 others, Marie–Madeline Germain and
Angelique–Ambroise Germain. She was brought into the world around times when it was frowned
upon for women to be educated, not to mention that it was also a revolution year too. Sophie spent
most of her time in the house reading in her Father's collection of books. "Their eldest and youngest
daughters, Marie–Madeleine and Angelique–Ambroise, were destined for marriage with
professional men. However, when the fall of the Bastille in 1789 drove the Germains' sensitive
middle daughter into hiding in the family library, Marie–Sophie's life path diverged from them all.
From the ages of 13 to 18 Sophie, as she was called to minimize confusion with the other Maries in
her immediate family, absorbed herself in the study of pure mathematics." One day she came across
a book about a deceased Mathematician by the name of Archimedes. Sophie was so engaged by his
work that she looked more into it as it interested her a lot. Sophie died on June 27th, 1831 in
birthplace of Paris, France. She wanted to find out more, what did Archimedes try to finish? At a
young age, Sophie's parents did not agree with her studying mathematics because it was not allowed

Analysis Of The Film Sophie Scholl
The film Sophie Scholl reflects the repetition of the concept of the "Hero from across the sea". One
of Northrop Frye's lessons on biblical stories, he explores in detail what "the hero from across the
sea" means. This theory consists of a wasteland that is ruled by the impotent old king, whose land is
being destroyed by a sea monster whose only goal is to demand human sacrifice. In this story, the
king's daughter "the princess tied to a rock" is chosen as a sacrifice to the sea monster, but luckily a
"hero from across the sea" comes to her rescue, returning the "fertility" to the land. In the movie
Sophie Scholl, this idea is shown multiple times, by a variety of characters. The movie Sophie
Scholl takes place in Germany around the time when Hitler and the Nazis were in power. The
protagonist, Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans Scholl are members of a German group, the white
rose, that is against Hitler's view and its ultimate goal is for war to conclude. Looking at the story
from a "hero from across the sea" point of view, I can deduce that Germany itself is the lifeless
wasteland, ravaged by the endless war that Hitler and the Nazis inflicted on the country, by way of
explanation, Hitler, and the Nazis are the sea monster itself. Germany at this time in history was a
place in where "Someone who speaks freely... is imprisoned or put to death" (Sophie Scholl,
1:03:06). Which is what happens to them, they place many leaflets around their university that
express negative opinions towards Hitler. Unfortunately, they get caught, they are interrogated for
their 'crimes' and sentenced to death by the old impotent king. Naturally, Hitler is the most apparent
choice when it comes to the old imponent king, but I think it can be applied to both him and the
president. The president doesn't exactly rule the wasteland, like Hitler, but he has the final say on
people's lives, allowing him to have to have an immense sense of authority. He also is very arrogant
and promotes Hitler's ideology to others, as if was 'the only viewpoint'.
There are three broad examples that represent this concept through this film. One example is the
when Hans attempts to help his sister, by taking on the blame for the crime. During Sophie's

##riesel's Speech In The Perils Of Indifference By Eliie...
American Jewish author and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel in his critical speech, "The Perils of
Indifference," suggests his message about the inhumanity of indifference and how the importance of
resistance is still relevant today. He develops his message by emphasizing how indifference is not
only dangerous, but is the most evil characteristic of our society today. For example, Wiesel states in
paragraph 13, "Indifference, then, is not only a sin, it is a punishment." These truthful words assist
in understanding the author's emphasis on indifference and its danger in our world; to add on,
Wiesel also uses rhetorical questions throughout the text to highlight powerful and important users
of indifference during the time period which he lived in. A question from the speech in paragraph 20
is, "Why the indifference, on the highest level, to the suffering of the victims?" This line in the text
exemplifies his belief that indifference is human nature if we do not rid ourselves of it. In brief, the
author explains how indifference is tempting in society because of the degree of effort one puts into
being indifferent, which is little to none. Wiesel's purpose is to inform the readers why indifference
is inhumane and to create awareness of indifference in order to persuade those readers not to be
indifferent to others. He establishes both serious and thankful tones for readers by using stylistic
and/or rhetorical device such as repetition and imagery in order to develop his

Hitler Youth leader– all the children had been members of the movement– the most disturbing
aspect of their lives had been the conflicts this had aroused with their fathers" (Dumbach 15). They
did this even against their father's wishes and beliefs. They thought that it was the right thing to do
because all of the other children around them were doing this same thing. They saw it as an exciting
thing to participate in. They "felt themselves a part in the rebuildings of their deeply divided and
demoralized nation"(24). Before Hitler came to power, when they listened to him speak they liked
what he had to say about the youth. However they ended up changing these views. "All of the
Scholl children had grown disillusioned with National Socialism, and after a few tension–filled
years, the family was reconciled" (Dumbach 15). They do this because "their family stood posed
against a regime that was making increasing inroads into the peace and autonomy of their lives"
(15). Also Hans was appalled by the rules that the Hitler Youth had in place. "[A]n early
confrontation that raised within him doubts about the organization to

Essay On White Rose Resistance

  • 1. Essay On White Rose Resistance While Hitler kept Jews in the concentration camps, there were some Jewish and non–Jewish people that tried and stop this brutality or help the Jews. They knew what hitler was doing with the Jews and his plans. They tried to do something to try and help the people. Some of them where The White Rose society, Rose Blanche, and Resistances in the ghettos. The white rose society were some of the first ones to start this revolt against hitler. Alexander Schmorell and Hans Scholl , both of whom were studying medicine, were the first LMU students to consider mounting an active campaign of resistance against the Nazi regime. Within two weeks, between the 27 June and 12 July 1942, they wrote, printed and distributed the first four "White Rose" protest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their main goals were to organize uprisings, break out of the ghettos, and join partisan units in the fight against the Germans. The Jews knew that uprisings would not stop the Germans and that only a handful of fighters would succeed in escaping to join the partisans. Still, some Jews made the decision to resist. Weapons were smuggled into ghettos. Inhabitants in the ghettos of Vilna, Mir, Lachva , Kremenets, Częstochowa, Nesvizh, Sosnowiec, and Tarnow, among others, resisted with force when the Germans began to deport ghetto populations. In Bialystok, the underground staged an uprising just before the final destruction of the ghetto in September 1943. Most of the ghetto fighters, primarily young men and women, died during the fighting. The Warsaw ghetto uprising in the spring of 1943 was the largest single revolt by Jews. Hundreds of Jews fought the Germans and their auxiliaries in the streets of the ghetto. Thousands of Jews refused to obey German orders to report to an assembly point for deportation. In the end the Nazis burned the ghetto to the ground to force the Jews out. Although they knew defeat was certain, Jews in the ghetto fought desperately and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This factor does make the research obtained valid as different views were mainly in support of Sophie, even if in some cases they supported the Nazi Regime (Source 5). • 3. The White Rose Moral Courage The courageous people that took part in the White Rose acts are the best definitions of showing moral courage. The White Rose's acts that happened during World War II made a big difference. A group of young men and women stood up for what is right, and we need more of that in this world. We need more moral courage in this modern day world. Many people do not know about the White Rose actions but, everyone should. Everyone should also look into their actions, take them into consideration and learn from them. In Nazi, Germany during World War II in 1942 a group including Willi Graf, Alexander Schmorell, Kurt Huber Christoph Probst, Hans Scholl and his sister Sophie Scholl formed a non–violent resistance group that made leaflets. The group was influenced by a young German youth group that Chrisoph Probst was a member of. Hans Scholl was a member of the Hitler Youth until 1936 and Sophie was a member of the Bund Deutscher Mädel. Willi Graf was a member of Neudeutschland, a young catholic youth association. and the Grauer Orden. The group they all formed was called The White Rose. The group co–authored six anti–Nazi Third Reich political resistance leaflets (Lisciotto). On three nights in February 1943 Alexander Schmorell, Hans Scholl and Willi Graf used tar and paint to write phrases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In other words, we need more moral courage to make this world better. I feel like there is no better example of moral courage for us to look up to than the members of the White Rose group. They are perfect because they can show what the youth in this world today should strive to be like and who they should look up to as heroes. Remember, the definition of moral courage is the courage to take action for moral reasons, despite the risk of the consequences good or bad. We need more people to do this in this world. Endangered Sophie Sparknotes Endangered The book Endangered is about the journey of survival and the connection between a young American girl (Sophie) and a bonobo monkey (Otto) in The Democratic Republic of the Congo. Sophie's mother lives in the Congo and runs a bonobo sanctuary. While on her way to the sanctuary to visit her mother for the summer, Sophie sees a man on the side of the road with a bonobo. She notices how malnourished and how bad the bonobo looks and against the rules of her mother, Sophie purchases the bonobo. When she reaches the sanctuary her mother is upset because even though she had good intentions of saving the bonobos life, bargaining with the man Sophie inadvertently promoted the illegal sale of the endangered bonobos. While at the sanctuary Sophie struggles to improve Otto's health and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Democratic Republic of the Congo has had many conflicts. The people of the country are poor, but interest is shown in the country because of mining. When war did break out the rebels enslaved and took people to work in the mines. Also, with the status of the country, the bonobos are becoming more and more endangered. This is in part because of poverty. The bonobos are being poached and killed for their meat and people even use their body parts because of superstitions. On top of this, the bonobo's are also losing their habitat. With an increase in a growing population more land is demanded taking from the bonobos. Logging companies are pushing further and further leaving the bonobos at risk for losing their habitat. Overall I enjoyed the book. I understand that this story is fictional, but a lot of the references reflect real life in the Congo. The country with a complicated past and the turmoil that can still be seen today. It is fitting that Eliot Schrefer titled this book Endangered. It can make reference to the dwindling numbers of the bonobos, but also to Sophie's exposure to danger while in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sophie Germain : An Important Date Sophie Germain Biography: Sophie Germain Delaney Archer Math 1303.2 Dr. Charles Matthews Southeastern Oklahoma State University Delaney Archer Dr. Charles Matthews Math 1303.2 15 October, 2014 Sophie Germain April 1, 1776 is an important date. Marie–Sophie Germain was born unto Ambroise–Francois and Marie Germain. Sophie Germain was born into a very wealthy family to say the least. Like any parents in the 1700 's, Ambroise and Marie did not want Sophie to grow up and be a mathematician, but that is later. First we must know what was happening around the time of Sophie 's birth. Although Sophie Germain was born into a very wealthy family, she was not of the aristocratic status. Soon after the birth of the great mathematician ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that one of the many great things about Sophie Germain was that she taught herself through the undergraduate level, unlike her predecessors such as: "Hypatia, Maria Agnesi, and Émilie Châtelet. You have to have a certain level of drive in you to learn so much of one subject just for the pure enjoyment of it. Sophie had this drive. Because of her parent 's protest, she sat in her room at night by the fire studying for hours on end. When her parents found out that she was staying up in order to betray their wishes, they took away all of her light sources thinking that this would stop her foolishness. This only drove her more. Mathematicians such as J. L. Lagrange were blown away by the fact that the written works he was receiving were written by a young woman as opposed to a male. "Monsieur Le Blanc" (a.k.a Sophie Germain) was never married. As for the works of Sophie Germain, one of the works she if known for is one of her first on Fermat 's Last Theorem. When Sophie worked on Fermat 's Last Theorem she "had adopted a new approach to the problem which was far more general than previous strategies. Her immediate goal was not to prove that one particular equation had no solutions, but to say something about several equations. In her letter to Gauss [a seasoned male mathematician of her time] she outlined a calculation which focused on those

  • 8. Machinal By Sophie Treadwell Sophie Treadwell's Machinal is a strangely riveting play so filled with unlikable characters that it makes one want to scream and throttle which ever one is closest to hand without prejudice as to which persona it might be as they are all equally detestable in their own way. Unfortunately, the infuriating characters are exactly what make the play so fascinating. Each of the characters in the play, originally intended to display that life is an inescapable machine, exhibits many disturbing psychological qualities, and the main character suffers a slew of near textbook psychological misfortune. Whether Sophie Treadwell created her play with this facet intentionally or not is unknown, but the examples are so perfect it is difficult to think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the narcissistic characteristics Helen's mother exhibits are her utter disregard for everything Helen says, speaking over her, her attention only engaged once benefits to her are involved, for instance: "Vice president! His income must be– does he know you've got a mother to support?" (Treadwell 17), and immediate overreaction to any criticism. Many children with narcissistic parents may have grown up in both neglectful and verbally abusive situations, but Helen's situation would have been compounded beyond that as she seems to have grown up with only her mother as a parental figure. Helen's father was revealed in the second act as, seemingly, long dead, leaving Helen alone to a single, powerful, influence. The Second character who exhibits the next most pressing issue is Helen's husband, Mr. J, who proves himself to be a sexual predator. Helen's physical repulsion such as when the Telephone Girl asks her "Why'd you flinch, kid?" (Treadwell 10) and her reactions to Mr. J touching her should really have been plenty of notice for him to stop. In the beginning, Mr. J has both status and rank, as her boss, over Helen, and this puts the relationship on shaky and inappropriate grounds due to Mr. J's power over her. • 9. Summary Of The Noble Treason For my book review I read the book, A Noble Treason written by Richard Hanser. The Noble Treason is about Sophie Scholl and the White Rose Revolt against Adolf Hitler. Taking place in 1942, Sophie Scholl and her older brother Hans were bright, young university students in Munich University in Germany. They had once been passionate supporters of the German renewal promised by National Socialism, as members of the Hitler Youth. But as their comprehension of Nazi barbarism grew, so did their moral outrage towards Adolf Hitler. In result, Sophie and Hans Scholl formed a small group of like–minded friends, which originally included a student of philosophy, two medical students, and a fifty–year–old professor. They were all identified as Christians from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He was meaning to show everyone that they are all equal and that every single one is the same no matter their differences. In my opinion, this true story showed determination and willpower because The White Rose was persisting in making their country better, not only for themselves but for future generations. They risked their lives not caring if they broke the law. They knew that Adolf Hitler was afraid of anyone corrupting the influence that he had over the people. In addition, I believe that he wanted to recall that even in the harshest times, people can still have hope and stand up for themselves. For instance, The White Rose changed many perspectives of others by simply publishing six leaflets which exposed Hitler's cruel ways. He wanted to emphasize and teach others that everyone has the freedom to think for themselves. Nobody should force one another what to do or what to think because it is their choice whether or not do will or will not do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She grew up in a middle class family, yet possessed a reasonable wealth due to her father's work as a merchant and later as the director of the Bank of France. Sophie first became interested in mathematics due to her long periods of time within her father's library, brought upon by the dangerous revolts within Paris during the 1800s. During her time in the library she came across a story in which a man was killed due to his engrossment with a mathematic problem, this resulted in the sparking of Sophie's interest. Sophie was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1829, yet it did little to deter her from continuing her work in mathematics and even began studying in philosophy and psychology. Years later after having been diagnosed "her paper on curvature of elastic surfaces was published in the scientific journal 'Crelle's Journal'." Because of Sophie's contribution, her former mentor Gauss convinced the University of Gottingen to award her an honorary degree. Tragically on June 27, 1831, in Paris, France Sophie Germain lost her fight with breast cancer before she could receive the award. Not wanting to disturb Sophie i asked her paraprofessional why she was not writing in a notebook like the rest of the kids in her class. She informed me that sophie prefers to write on a lined whiteboard but they are working on getting her to write more on the notebook. I speculate that the smooth surface of the whiteboard is easier for Sophie to work with, given that she has had trouble with her gross motor skills throughout her young life. During story time i observed sophie actively engaging in question and answer time. I noticed she payed close attention to her teacher , and rarely was distributed. When ... When you move from a small town in Minnesota to an enormous city such as New York, you are very likely to feel alienated and out of place. In Minnesota, Siri Hustvedt greeted every person she passed on the street, not because she wanted to, but because if she didn't, she would be seen as a snob. When she moved to New York, she quickly discovered how impractical and unsound it would be to greet every person she passed. This is exactly what she talks about in her 2002 essay "Living With Strangers". The essay speaks of Siri Hustvedt's life events. The events are not told in a chronological order, and therefore, the essay is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They just followed the "PRETEND IT ISN'T HAPPENING" law. This is again very relatable to the readers. It is quite rare, to see people getting involved in something that is happening right next to them. This is what Siri Hustvedt discusses in her third part of the essay. Siri Hustvedt has up until now, been very critical of the entire concept concerning the "PRETEND IT ISN'T HAPPENING" law, but now she acknowledges some few advantages with this law. She does this with an anecdote that her husband told her. It was about a man, who told another, very tall and strong man "Excuse me, sir" "for bothering you, but I want to point out that it's against the law to smoke on the subway" . To which the man answered, "Do you wanna die? ". This anecdote is used, to illustrate the positive sites of the "PRETEND IT ISN'T HAPPENING LAW". This threat, was most likely just a threat, but it illustrates, as Siri Hustvedt said: "Taking action may be viewed as courageous or merely stupid" . However, Siri Hustvedt does not believe this is a very common thing, and to ensure us it isn't she takes use of another story, which was told to her by her daughter, Sophie. Sophie, who was 14 years old at this time, was riding the subway, when a stranger suddenly eyeballed her, and then proceeded to publicly announce his love for her. He was a sort of guard that stood up for the people in the camp, even though he knew his fate (Broz). Svetlana Broz, the author of the article telling stories about courage, says, "Then they brought over a civilian, a man who was Croatian like they were...They ordered him to choose a dozen of us from the lines and to decide how we would be killed...Without a second thought he turned to the armed murderers and said, 'You should be ashamed of yourselves! These people are innocent. Release them...' Then he turned to us and, looking right into our eyes, said, "I'm so sorry. This is all I can do. I know they will kill me tonight.'" He used courage in the conflict he was facing; whether to stand up for what he knew was wrong or to conform with the rest of his people. If he wasn't brave, he wouldn't have been able to stand up to the other guards. And, although he died that night, his efforts weren't in vain. Rescued months later, some of the people in those lines survived the camp. Another story of courage is about Anusha Jeyapraba, from Sri Lanka, an island off of India. • 23. The Roles Of Sophie Scholl There were about 67 million people living in Germany during the time of the Holocaust, however only a few had the bravery to speak out against the Nazis. Sophie Scholl was one of these courageous people. It is evident that Sophie Scholl is a great role model who impacted Germany because she wrote anti–Nazi propaganda, fought for what she thought was right, and Germans today admire her. Sophie grew up during the Nazi takeover in Forchtenberg, Germany. Unlike most German families, hers had their own ideas about the Nazi party. Her father, who was a former mayor of several small towns in Germany, warned Sophie and her brothers about the new regime eventually abusing their power (Biography in Context). Her parents also encouraged their children to "think for themselves and speak their minds" (Student Resource Center). This parental support foreshadows what Sophie and her brother would become. The Scholl household was very supportive of their family members. When Sophie was twelve years old, she joined the League of German Girls. This was a "pseudo– Nazi organization" (Pettinger). These organizations, called Hitler Youth Organizations, "trained and educated" German teenagers to become "loyal followers of the Nazi Party" (Zapotczny). • 25. Messages In The Perils Of Indifference By Elie Wiesel Author, Elie Wiesel in his morose yet optimistic speech, "The Perils of Indifference," asserts that indifference is dangerous and we as individuals, a nation, and a global community should learn from the indifference of the past. He supports his message by revealing his past experience through the eyes of a young boy who witnessed the Holocaust and America's' eyes full of rage as a reaction to the survivors' pain. Additionally, Wiesel describes many other events that have occurred, for example, like Cambodia, resulting in violent suffering and mass indifference. The sinful act of indifference is something that everyone should fear as Wiesel describes it. Lastly, he warns the audience that we need to prepare ourselves for what is yet to come, for the past is going to repeat itself if we do not learn from our mistakes. Wiesel's purpose is to inform readers about indifference as well as the negative outcomes that come with it in order to bring about a change in humanity. The author establishes a serious tone for readers by using stylistic devices such as repetition, rhetorical questions, and imagery in order to achieve his message that indifference is a danger we the future will interact with, but still hope never comes. Horrifyingly so, the holocaust is not the only indifferent caused event Wiesel mentions in "The Peril of Indifference." An event much like the holocaust, Cambodia had labor camps where "physical abuse, disease, exhaustion, and starvation were extremely prevalent," killing about 1.7–2 million Cambodians during Khmer Rouge's 4 year reign. Although "scholars and others in the West tried to bring attention to the atrocities being committed," no one actually stepped in to help prevent this from continuing. No one in Cambodia resisted because they couldn't think of a plan to since the "doctors, teachers and other educated people, as well as monks, the rich, and anyone perceived to be in opposition were tortured and killed." Also, in an excerpt from "Growing Up in Hitler's shadow", "Later, Sophie would not buckle again on her political views: In another letter to Fritz, she wrote, "I don't like to think about it, but soon there is going to be nothing left but politics, and as long as it's so confused and evil, it's cowardly to turn away from it"'(Bartoletti). This quote shows how young sophie thought her mind and fought for the positive and right choice, despite the ideas of the ones around her. Ultimately, another young girl also answers the question, Anne Frank. She makes an important point, "Well, all I can say is that I don't really know yet. I don't think I'll ever feel at home in this house, but that doesn't mean I hate it. It's more like being on vacation in some strange pension. Kind of an odd way to look at life in hiding, but that's how things are" (Frank 374). The differences between people, and the people's beliefs. Waknuk is a town where religion is very strict and abusive about its beliefs. If anyone or anything were to have a deformity or not considered a definition of God or a true image of God then that person or thing would be either sacrificed, banished or even burned. In addition, the Waknuk people are portrayed as very prejudiced people. They do not bother to accept anyone who looks different or are mentally different even though they have similar characteristics as the Waknuk people and their personality can be just as "normal" as the people in Waknuk. • 31. Sophie Scoholl Research Paper Sophie Scholl and the White Rose Society "We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!" This piece of writing from the fourth White Rose leaflet is a strong representation of how Sophie Scholl and the other White Rose creators felt about Hitler and his Nazism. When the rise of Hitler came to be, majority of the German population were willing to follow him or too scared to say otherwise. However, there was still a minority of people who were completely anti–Nazi and an even smaller portion who were willing to speak up about it. Within this smaller portion were siblings Hans and Sophie Scholl and their group of university friends. Sophie Scholl was known as the "heart" of the White Rose Society. This is the life of Sophie, her involvement in the White Rose, and the impact that the White Rose had on her death. Hans and Sophie were born into a Lutheran Christian home filled with love and ... They placed piles of the leaflets outside the classrooms, on windowsills, and on the large stairway that led down to the main floor. They had just left the building when Sophie suddenly realized that there were perhaps 100 more leaflets left in the suitcase. They went back inside, climbed the stairs to the top top landing of the university's inner court, and tossed the remaining leaflets into the air, just as students were exiting their lecture halls (Atwood). This would sadly be the last act that they would do as free Germans. When they tossed the remaining leaflets off of the top landing, a custodian named Jakob Schmid saw them just as the leaflets hit the floor. • 32. Sophie Germain's Contribution To The Middle Age Of Paris Sophie Germain was born April 1st, 1776 in Paris, France. Sophie's family was rich and counted as upper Classmen. Sophie was the middle child out of 2 others, Marie–Madeline Germain and Angelique–Ambroise Germain. She was brought into the world around times when it was frowned upon for women to be educated, not to mention that it was also a revolution year too. Sophie spent most of her time in the house reading in her Father's collection of books. "Their eldest and youngest daughters, Marie–Madeleine and Angelique–Ambroise, were destined for marriage with professional men. However, when the fall of the Bastille in 1789 drove the Germains' sensitive middle daughter into hiding in the family library, Marie–Sophie's life path diverged from them all. From the ages of 13 to 18 Sophie, as she was called to minimize confusion with the other Maries in her immediate family, absorbed herself in the study of pure mathematics." One day she came across a book about a deceased Mathematician by the name of Archimedes. Sophie was so engaged by his work that she looked more into it as it interested her a lot. Sophie died on June 27th, 1831 in birthplace of Paris, France. She wanted to find out more, what did Archimedes try to finish? Our team choose the Hitler's youth for our subject to help people who read the book Sophie Scholl. We talked about what the children did in those camps and their way of living. Our learning in history helped us categorize and understand our information because we had already learned few things about World War II. We knew the context of this period. When Sophie turned 13, the Bastille fell and forced little Sophie to stay indoors. To kill her boredom, Sophie read books in her father's library where she became interested in mathematics. She poured over every book on math in her father's library and even found the time to teach herself Latin and Greek. Knowing those two languages, she was able to read works of Leonhard Euler and Isaac Newton. Sophie's parents were not okay with the idea that their daughter loved mathematics; they tried to stop her. She later corresponded with Adrien–Marie Legendre on the number theory, and later, elasticity. After a while, Sophie began to lose interest in the number theory and eventually no longer studied the number theory. In 1815,Sophie's interest in the number theory was reawakened after a prize was offered to her. In order to receive this prize Sophie was asked to prove that Fermat's Last Theorem is accurate. Sophie wrote a letter to Carl Friedrich Gauss and in this letter, she stated that the number theory was her preferred field. • 36. Analysis Of The Film Sophie Scholl The film Sophie Scholl reflects the repetition of the concept of the "Hero from across the sea". One of Northrop Frye's lessons on biblical stories, he explores in detail what "the hero from across the sea" means. This theory consists of a wasteland that is ruled by the impotent old king, whose land is being destroyed by a sea monster whose only goal is to demand human sacrifice. In this story, the king's daughter "the princess tied to a rock" is chosen as a sacrifice to the sea monster, but luckily a "hero from across the sea" comes to her rescue, returning the "fertility" to the land. In the movie Sophie Scholl, this idea is shown multiple times, by a variety of characters. The movie Sophie Scholl takes place in Germany around the time when Hitler and the Nazis were in power. The protagonist, Sophie Scholl and her brother Hans Scholl are members of a German group, the white rose, that is against Hitler's view and its ultimate goal is for war to conclude. Looking at the story from a "hero from across the sea" point of view, I can deduce that Germany itself is the lifeless wasteland, ravaged by the endless war that Hitler and the Nazis inflicted on the country, by way of explanation, Hitler, and the Nazis are the sea monster itself. Germany at this time in history was a place in where "Someone who speaks freely... is imprisoned or put to death" (Sophie Scholl, 1:03:06). Which is what happens to them, they place many leaflets around their university that express negative opinions towards Hitler. Unfortunately, they get caught, they are interrogated for their 'crimes' and sentenced to death by the old impotent king. Naturally, Hitler is the most apparent choice when it comes to the old imponent king, but I think it can be applied to both him and the president. The president doesn't exactly rule the wasteland, like Hitler, but he has the final say on people's lives, allowing him to have to have an immense sense of authority. He also is very arrogant and promotes Hitler's ideology to others, as if was 'the only viewpoint'. There are three broad examples that represent this concept through this film. One example is the when Hans attempts to help his sister, by taking on the blame for the crime. During Sophie's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. ##riesel's Speech In The Perils Of Indifference By Eliie... American Jewish author and Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel in his critical speech, "The Perils of Indifference," suggests his message about the inhumanity of indifference and how the importance of resistance is still relevant today. He develops his message by emphasizing how indifference is not only dangerous, but is the most evil characteristic of our society today. For example, Wiesel states in paragraph 13, "Indifference, then, is not only a sin, it is a punishment." These truthful words assist in understanding the author's emphasis on indifference and its danger in our world; to add on, Wiesel also uses rhetorical questions throughout the text to highlight powerful and important users of indifference during the time period which he lived in. A question from the speech in paragraph 20 is, "Why the indifference, on the highest level, to the suffering of the victims?" This line in the text exemplifies his belief that indifference is human nature if we do not rid ourselves of it. In brief, the author explains how indifference is tempting in society because of the degree of effort one puts into being indifferent, which is little to none. Wiesel's purpose is to inform the readers why indifference is inhumane and to create awareness of indifference in order to persuade those readers not to be indifferent to others. He establishes both serious and thankful tones for readers by using stylistic and/or rhetorical device such as repetition and imagery in order to develop his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Summary Of Sophie Scholl And The White Rose The book "Sophie Scholl and the White Rose" by Annette Dumbach is a book about resistance, Nazism and the path to freedom under Hitler's rein. In this story the main characters Sophie and Hans Scholl play a part in the path towards resistance during Hitler's power. Sophie and her brother both start as being fans of Nazism and Hitler's rein. "Hans was an active Hitler Youth leader– all the children had been members of the movement– the most disturbing aspect of their lives had been the conflicts this had aroused with their fathers" (Dumbach 15). They did this even against their father's wishes and beliefs. They thought that it was the right thing to do because all of the other children around them were doing this same thing. They saw it as an exciting thing to participate in. They "felt themselves a part in the rebuildings of their deeply divided and demoralized nation"(24). Before Hitler came to power, when they listened to him speak they liked what he had to say about the youth. However they ended up changing these views. "All of the Scholl children had grown disillusioned with National Socialism, and after a few tension–filled years, the family was reconciled" (Dumbach 15). They do this because "their family stood posed against a regime that was making increasing inroads into the peace and autonomy of their lives" (15). Also Hans was appalled by the rules that the Hitler Youth had in place. "[A]n early confrontation that raised within him doubts about the organization to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
