St. Stephen Research Paper
St. Stephen, the First Martyr's feast day is December 26. The date of his birth is not known. He died
in c. 34. Very little is known about St. Stephen. He is first talked about in the Acts of the Apostles
(Acts 6:5). St. Stephen is the patron saint of stonemasons, deacons, casketmakers, horses,
headaches, sufferers, widowers, etc..... He has many symbols. In Eastern art, he is usually seen in
the robes of a deacon, often, swinging a censer (the container in which incense is burned) and is
sometimes shown holding a small church. In Western art, he is often shown holding the stones that
were the instrument of his martyrdom, as well as palm. Both Eastern and Western art have shown
him wearing the martyr's crown. St. Stephen is first mentioned in the Acts 6:5 as one of the seven
deacons appointed by the Apostles to distribute food and charitable aid to poorer members of the
community in the early church. The reason for the appointment of the deacons is said to have been
that there was dissatisfaction among Hellenistic Jews that their widows were being slighted in
preference to Hebraic ones is distribution of alms from the community funds. It is said that St.
Stephen was "full of faith and the Holy Spirit." It is also said ... Show more content on

Stephen about his beliefs. These people convinced some men to say that Stephen was speaking
against Moses and even against God. This wasn't true but many people got upset about it because
they believed it was true. They took St. Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish
rulers. These were powerful men who were able to make life and death decisions about people. St.
Stephen told them about the whole history of the Jewish people beginning with Abraham. The
Sanhedrin did not like what they were hearing. They put their hands over their ears, yelled at the top
of their voices so that they could not hear what he was saying. They dragged him outside and began

ALS Research Essay
10/29/14
Physics
When the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' started becoming more and more prominent, and people were
becoming more aware of what exactly ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is, they began asking:
"who is someone that is famous that suffers or has suffered from this disease?" Most people's
obvious answer is Lou Gehrig, who is a famous baseball player that succumbed to this disease back
in the early 1900s, and happens to be the other name people refer this disease as. I answered with
"Stephen Hawking", and people would give me a bewildered look as if asking me "who the heck is
that?" I would stare back in absolute shock and little bit of horror, because honestly, who has not
heard of the man that basically theorized black holes and extended Einstein's idea of general
relativity with quantum physics theory. Stephen Hawking, who is a little less than a god, is
"arguably the most famous scientist alive today (Contributions and Achievements)", and I would say
that he is definitely one of the most important scientific figures that has ever been introduced to the
human race. This essay will present Stephen Hawking and dive deep into his life pulling out the
smallest particulars, and then explaining how certain and specific details have made him into who
and what he is today. To start with, here's a brief Stephen Hawking biography. Stephen William
Hawking was born to Frank and Isobel Hawking on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, United Kingdom.

Stephen Hawking
"Possibly the most famous Physicist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking...is regarded by many
as the greatest genius of our day". Stephen Hawking (a world–renowned Physicist) was born on
January 8, 1942, in Oxford, United Kingdom. His parents were Frank and Isobel Hawking. His
father, Frank, grew up on a farm in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Frank attended Oxford for a degree
in college and became a doctor and well–respected researcher for National Institute for Medical
Research (NIMR). His mother, Isobel, was a secretary for a medical research institute in Hampstead.
Stephen Hawking was the oldest child of four in his family. He was born during the Second World
War, so his parents moved from Northern London to Oxford before he was born for Stephen's safety.
In 1943, the family welcomed the second child in the family named Mary Hawking. They, later on,
welcomed Philippa to the family in 1947. The last child Edward was adopted in 1956. He attended
the St Albans School, boarding school from 4–12 grade and was 3rd from the bottom of his class. At
the age of 17 Stephen Hawking got accepted into Oxford University to study Physics (according to
Khan Academy the study to "define the most fundamental measurable quantities in the universe"),
and cosmology ("a branch of astronomy that deals with the origin, structure, and space–time
relationships of the universe" according to, the Meriam Webster

Two Views of Violence
Two Views of Violence
It is easy to interpret that the world is more violent today than in the past, when violence is present
on many television and radio channels and dispersed so liberally throughout the internet. The truth
of the matter, however, is that physical violence has always been a part of our lives. Beginning with
the first murder in the Bible by Cain, an early example of violence in literature, physical violence
has often been a part of what one reads. In comparing the novel Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by
Stephen Crane, and the novel Deadwood Dick's Doom by Edward Wheeler, one can see that both
novels portray many types of physical violence, that there is not necessarily a relationship between
the physical violence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In retaliation, little Jimmie "kicked repeatedly at his father's shins" (Crane 44). Most of the main
characters in this novel were uneducated, because they had to start work early in life. This is evident
in their manner of speech. Their lack of education kept them from realizing the effects alcohol has
on violence, and they drank a lot. Every time they drank, they became more violent. Jimmie is
happiest, though, when he has "a dollar in his pocket" (Crane 47). When he doesn't, he becomes
despondent, and then violent.
When comparing the two novels, however, Deadwood Dick does not make a connection between
low–socioeconomic standing, and violence. Piute Dave is a "well–heeled but notorious" young
gambler. If one were to consult a thesaurus, one would see that the antonym for "well–heeled" is
"poor." One knows Dave is not poor, also, because he and his band of ruffians did not take long to
discover "paying dirt" (Wheeler 1). Nevertheless, he and his band are certainly violent. Even the
government officials are "cognizant of the lawlessness within the borders of Death Notch," and they
hesitate to interfere (Wheeler 1). With no one to stop them, they continue to fight. Hank
Shakespeare, the Poet, is the "bully over all, and always ripe for a spree" and "never backward about
waltzing right into a quarrel" (Wheeler 8). One views a stabbing when Piute Dave

commences one will tell you about its history. In this pamphlet one will talk to you about the history
of the cathedral, its details, symbolism, windows, architectural designs, and miracles. Enjoy the tour
of the St. Stephen cathedral.
On July 27, 1963 the construction of the Lord's house began. The project to construct this marvelous
house was a pain. It had many setbacks and delays it took more than half a century to compose. On
November 2, 2015 it was finally completed all the draw backs payed off.
Consequently, over a fifty–two year span the house has gone through many catastrophes causing the
construction workers to rebuild time and time again. On November 26, 1970 lightning struck the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Deafness
There are many disabilities that occur among people, and one of the most common disabilities is
deafness. When I was ten months old, I was diagnosed with Conexin 26 which is a genetic diagnosis
of profound bi–lateral deafness, and I have had many obstacles throughout my life relating to it.
However, deafness continues to make me the person I am today, and I am stronger because of that
reason. My mom realized that I could not respond to any of her sounds when I was a baby, so she
took me to the doctors to figure out what was wrong with me. When the doctors discovered that I
was deaf, they told my mom, and she was worried that I would have a hard time in my life due to
my disability. After failed attempts to hear with hearing aids, at fifteen months old I had surgery on
the right side of the head to get a cochlear implant, which are complex electronic devices implanted
in the cochleah that help provide sounds to the brain by bi–passing the ear drum. After this, my
parents enrolled me in a deaf school in St. Louis, and I began to learn how to talk and communicate
with others using my new hearing device. The school did not want to teach their students sign
language or lip reading; instead, it wanted to teach basic social skills, so the kids can have less
difficulty in social settings, and the students can relate to hearing people. This was difficult for me
since I began to talk at three years old, but the school helped me in so many ways to be the person I
am today and taught me how to express myself in words. However, I could not rely on that school
forever. I had to move to Ohio when I was six years old, and I learned that I was enrolled in a public
school. I was excited to finally go to a school with more students who are normal hearing people
and for once be like everyone else. What I did not realize was that I would be surrounded by hearing
people, and they would not relate to me like people did at my previous school. Although I thought
that would be the case, many people did not care that I was deaf due to the fact that we were too
young, and I became relieved that they were accepting of who I was. As years went on, I had many
friends, and they were there for me despite my deafness, and I was thankful

Maya Angelou Literary Analysis
Literary works represent an important part of culture. Literary has many elements that serve as
levers that every literary work stands on. Settings compose the nucleus for literary works and
depend on time and place, which help to establish the background of the work. Plot, character,
theme, and style also compose fundamental components of settings. I'll discuss characters roles and
presentation in three different works, which are "Jump and Other Stories" by Nadine Gordminer,
"My Beautiful Laundrette" by Hanif Kureishi and "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" by Maya
Angelou.

Stephen Hawking 's Death Of The Greatest Scientist
Imagine if you could only move your left hand an inch or so, and the rest of your body was
completely paralyzed. You can't talk, and you can hardly move. This disease is called amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS and this is what Stephen Hawking has. Despite the
fact that he is handicapped, he has managed to become one of the greatest scientists ever.
Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo Galilei)
in Oxford, England. As a kid, he was fascinated with the idea of an ever–growing universe that he
lives in, and would occasionally lie on his front lawn, with his family, observing the sky and taking
turns looking through a telescope at the stars. On one quiet, dark ... Show more content on

His great abilities in physics were weakened by his poor study habits. After his final exam, Stephen
was on the line between first and second honors. To determine his degree, the professors decided to
give him an oral exam. He passed the test with excellence, and therefore, went on to Cambridge.
At Cambridge University, he was going to study cosmetology, a branch of physics. Fortunately for
him he decided to study theoretical physics, not experimental physics where he would have had to
set up many experiments, which he could not have done after he got ALS.
By now, Stephen had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS slowly destroys the
nerves in the brain and spine. ALS victims usually die within 2–5 years because it destroys the
muscles used for breathing which leads to suffocation.
When he was diagnosed with ALS, he pretty much gave up his life. After he did not die after two
years, he realized he could go on with ALS and his study of cosmetology. Although he was weak, he
could still walk. After those 2 years, he decided he could not waste any time, there were things he
wanted to do in his life. Hawking wanted to get married and get a Ph.D. So he was engaged to Jane
Wilde in 1965. Hawking said, "It [getting married to her] made me determined to live, to go on. Jane
really gave me the will to live." Then he got his Ph.D. and started to work at Cambridge. He was
now officially known as Professor Dr. Stephen William Hawking. His health

The Design and Architecture of Sacred Sites
Introduction:
Hypothesis– "The design of sacred sites facilitates rituals and reflects an approach to the divine."
The design and architecture of sacred sites, is considered to be a highly important aspect in the
correct functioning of rituals that take place within, namely two main world religions:
Christianity/Catholicism and Judaism.
"Christianity has a close relationship with Judaism, both historically and theologically. Jesus, the
twelve disciples, the author of most of the New Testament and the members of the earliest Christian
churches were all Jews. Jesus' family also followed Jewish customs and Jesus frequently quoted the
Hebrew Bible. Followers of Jesus believe him to be the Messiah which was a figure predicted in the
Jewish Bible."(Religion Facts, 2014)
Rituals through both these religions help the participant gain a sense of closeness to their divine
being and aid their faith in ways such meditation, prayer, reflection and celebration.
This report will aim to explain how these sacred sites are designed in order to facilitate rituals and
reflect a persons experience and closeness with the divine as they partake in the sacred rituals of
their religion.
Methods of research (primary/secondary sources):
On the 27th March 2014, St Augustine's visited St Stephens Cathedral and the Brisbane City
Synagogue. Primary evidence was collected from both these sacred sites through the tour guides that
gave the students knowledge and understanding about

Stephen Hawking Contribution
Stephen Hawking is well known for being smart, despite his medical condition, but does anyone
ever care to understand what he has contributed to education? Or what he has contributed to
knowledge? No, because the only thing media shows us is how he is capable of many things, even
though he is disabled. Many people have the issue of making that connection between what
Hawking is known for, and what he has actually done to be who he is today. Hawking is a brilliant
man, and he has, and will, continue contributing to education in the fields of math and science for as
long as he is capable. Hawking was born January 8th, 1942 in Oxford, England. He is still living at
the grand age of 75 years old. Early in his childhood, the stars and sky captured his attention–even
though his father wanted his eldest son to pursue a medical career, just like him. He attended St.
Albans School for his primary and secondary education. He was often at the bottom of his class due
to the fact that he was very inattentive during school, and spent little time on his studies. Being at
the bottom didn't stop his desire for education as he trudged on and was admitted into Oxford
University at the age of 17. By the time he reached college, he wanted to study mathematics; but
Oxford didn't offer a degree in that specialty, so he ventured over towards the physics major. He
graduated Oxford with honors in natural science and went on to Trinity Hall at Cambridge
University to obtain a PhD in cosmology. (A)

Stephen Hawking once said, "However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can
do and succeed at." What he meant by that is that you should not give up easily on things. It might
seem hard at first, but you need to remember that nothing is impossible, you can do anything. Even
though Stephen Hawking has a disability, it didn't hold him back to contribute something great to
the world of science. His work allows us to learn more about the universe. Through his work, it
made science accessible to everyone.

Short Essay On Stephen Hawking
From deadly disease to black holes, Stephen Hawking has emerged as one of the most important
scientific minds in the cosmos. Throughout his life, Hawking used several habits of mind to
overcome Lou Gehrig's disease and become a world–famous theoretical physicist. He didn't let his
diagnosis prevent him from pursuing his dreams, and along the way, he became a role model to
generations of people. Although he is known for being brilliant, that wasn't the case when he was
young. As a matter of fact, Hawking's abilities made little impact on his teachers and fellow students
in school. (4) Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England during World War ll. He
had a normal childhood and was raised in a "lively, talkative, and intellectual environment." (3) His
father was a research physician, and his mother was a college graduate and the daughter of a
physician.("Stephen Hawking," 2008) As a young boy, Hawking attended St. Albans School. As
Michael White and John Gribbin describe him in Stephen Hawking: A Life in Science, "He was

The Greatest Heroes Of Stephen Hawking
"Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change"(BrainyQuote) This is a quote from the famous
Stephen Hawking, which shows that intelligence is not measured by how much you know, but rather
by what you do with what you know. Stephen Hawking has continually showed the many
characteristics of a hero through his life, even while fighting with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Stephen Hawking grew up in England and was diagnosed with ALS at a very young age. However,
he did not let this stop him from shaking the foundations of science forever. Stephen Hawking is
considered one of the greatest heroes in science due to his perseverance and courage in relation to
his medical handicap and the lack of information on his field.
A hero is someone who makes the choice to do what others lack the strength to do, who has courage
like no others, who puts others needs before theirs, and someone who does this without the thought
of external gain. A true hero is someone who shows "a concern for other people in need... knowing
there is a personal risk" (Zimbardo). The core qualities at the center of any hero are persistence,
courage, and selflessness. Courage is defined as the mindset that enables a person to face danger
without fear, while selflessness is prescribed as the ability to put other's needs before yours. The
most important quality of a hero is persistence and is described
Thompson 2 as the continuance on the journey towards a goal or action in spite of difficulty or
opposition. Keeping

Stephen Hawking : An Enigma Himself
Stephen Hawking: An Enigma Himself Explains the Enigmatic Universe.
Today as Stephen Hawking is 72 years young, "Hawking 's work on black holes and the origins of
the universe guarantees him a place in the scientific pantheon, but his ability to pursue scientific
work despite the ravages of ALS (Lou Gehrig 's disease) have earned him superstar status."
(Kirkus,1) This gives us an insight into Hawking 's identity as of the very motivated nature of
Hawking and how he never quits at the sight of adversity. Weather in the face of a dangerous disease
or difficult deduction. Hawking always finds the drive to keep going, which seldom other people
possess. Hawking's dilemma to start working on a 5 year Doctorate degree when he was diagnosed
with only have 2 years to live is a mark of his true dedication to his first love science. However like
all individuals, Hawking's identity was not just a result of a single moment it was created for a life
time of experiences and challenges. Frank and Isobel Hawking were blessed with their first born
Hawking on 8th January 1942. As if destiny had a magical hand in shaping events, this coincided
with the 300th death anniversary of Galileo Galilei. Galilei an Italian mathematician, physicist,
astronomer has been called the father of modern 'observational astronomy' the father of modern
physics and the father of modern science.(Weidhorn 155) Hawking has always been very proud of

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, England. At an early age, Hawking
showed a passion for science and the sky. At age 21, while studying cosmology at the University of
Cambridge, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Despite his debilitating illness, he
has done groundbreaking work in physics and cosmology and his several books have helped to
make science accessible to everyone. His Scottish mother had earned her way into Oxford
University in the 1930s. His father, another Oxford graduate, was a well–known medical researcher
with a specialty in tropical diseases. Stephen Hawking 's birth came at an inopportune time for his

Hawking had kept these symptoms to himself. But when his father started to notice of his condition
he took Hawking to see a doctor. For the next two weeks hawking made his home at a medical clinic
where he went through a series of tests. Doctors did inform the Hawkings family about what was
happening to their son. He was in the early stages of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou
Gehrig 's disease) the nerves that controlled his muscles were shutting down. Doctors gave him two
and a half years to live. However somethings prevented him from becoming completely hopeless.
The first of these came while Hawking was still in the hospital there he shared a room with a boy
suffering from leukemia. Hawking later reflected his situation seemed more tolerable. Not too long
after he was released from the hospital Hawking had a dream that he was going to be executed. He
said this dream made him realize that there were still things to do with his life. At a New Year 's
party in 1963 shortly before he had been diagnosed with ALS, Hawking met a young languages
undergraduate named Jane Wilde. They were married in 1965. Hawking 's disease helped him
become the noted scientist he is today before the diagnosis Hawking hadn 't always focused on his
studies. "Before my condition was diagnosed I had been very bored with life," he said. "There had

Who Is St. Stephen: Intresting Saint
St. Stephen was pretty intresting saint. There is nothing in the bible that says of his date of birth.
Moreover, there is nothing on his birthplace as well. The bible never states anything about his
childhood. The only clue about his family history was his name "Stephen". His name in Greek is
Stephanos which means wreath or crowned. This made people believe he was Hellenistic Jew. He
died on the year 36 A.D. That is all we know about his background. There isn't much on his adult
life too. He never went to school, college or further education of what we know of. He never got

Most people have felt lesser than someone else. In most cases, this is uncomfortable and gives a
feeling of insecurity, but it's also a part of developing and finding yourself. However, a lot of people
have felt this insecurity since the start of their youth. This is what the story "My Polish Teacher's

A Brief History of Stephen Hawking
The quote, "look up at the stars, not down at your feet," spoken by Stephen Hawking at the Sydney
Opera House, sums up Hawking's life in one sentence. Despite having amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,
or ALS, Hawking survived nearly fifty years with the disease until he died on March 14th, 2018. In
the time period of him having the disease, he has made several large contributions to the field of
science, and cosmology. The changes and influence Stephen Hawking has made will likely change
the whole world for the better.

any point in working on my Ph.D. because I didn't know if I would live long enough to finish it."
Even after getting ALS, Hawking could still talk, as he had full control of his head. However, about

Hawking, but it caused Hawking to lose the ability to speak. At one point, the doctors offered to turn

but there are some small changes. The plot is about four twelve year olds who embark into a journey
to discover the body of Ray Brower. During their journey each boy learns something extraordinary
about themselves and about there friends. The main conflict in the novel is that there is another
group of older boys who are also searching for the body. The novel was released in 1982 and the

In the novel the setting of the story takes place in a small town named Castle Rock that is located in
Maine in the year 1960 and in the film the setting is Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959. This difference
would be considered a minor change because it is only one year apart from the original date in the
novel and the change of the state does not really matter. Adding to differences is that in the novel in
chapter seven there is a story that is told by Gordie called "Stud City' in the film it is not shown or
mentioned. This would be considered a major change because the story shows how smart and
mature Gordie is for a twelve year old and it is important for the build up of the character but it is
excluded from the film. Another difference is that in the novel when the boys find the body and they
confront the other boys Chris pulls the gun out to make them leave. In the film it is Gordie who
takes out the gun to make them leave. This is a major change because in the novel it helped make
the ending make more sense and helped Chris' buildup as a character. In addition to differences in
the novel when the boys are on there journey they go into the pond to swim because they want to. In
the film they go into the pond because they have to in order to get across. This isn't considered a
major change because it doesn't affect the plot in any way. Something the filmmakers did well

Compare And Contrast Stephen Hawking And St. Thomas Of The...
" I think the universe was created out of nothing according to the laws of science. It has no
beginning and no end."– Stephen Hawking. Throughout the ages there has been countless beliefs on
how the universe may have been created. Some people have concluded the universe was by
designed by a God while others have concluded the universe was formed in the beginning and end
of singularities that formed a boundary to spacetime to which the laws of science breaks down.
Since 500 B.C and present time, countless of people have formed theories . Sadly, numerous of
theorists don't have concrete proof. In spite of this, people can still compare and contrast theories
people have made such as Stephen Hawking and St. Thomas of the Aquinas. Before looking at the
similarities and differences of Stephen Hawking and St. Thomas of the Aquinas, it is important to
understand their background and how they came to be. St. Thomas was born in Aquino, Italy in
1225. He studied in the Paris, France and Cologne, Germany. His teacher was Albert the Great.
Aquinas was later ordained a Dominican Priest. He went on to publish his masterpiece, The Summa
Theologica, used human reasoning to harmonize the truths of the Bible with Greek Philosophy. In
the Summa Theologica St. Thomas wrote five proofs to elucidate furthermore to God's existence.
The First Proof is Prime Mover: nothing can move itself so therefore the mover must be God. The
Second Proof the Uncreated Creator: nothing can create itself so God is the invisible creation maker.
Third is 'Necessary Being' all existent things depend upon other things for their existence, there
must exist at least one being. Fourth perfect standard by which all is measured. Lastly Intelligent
Designer: everything in the universe is intelligent the being that created us is intelligent. St. Thomas
would later stop publishing his works because he thought humans have a small glimpse of the whole
universe. However, Stephen Hawking's story differs from St, Thomas. Stephen Hawking was born
on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. He later attended Cambridge University for his doctorate
and meet his wife Jane. During one of Stephen's classes his professor invited him to see a lecture on

Political Satire: Beneficial or detrimental?
"The human race has one really effective weapon. And that is laughter," was said by Mark Twain.

The morning after this skit Trump tweeted that he had watched parts of the show and found it totally

only wants to make a mockery of politics. Political satire has been around for ages, in the United
States it has been around since the colonial days where the founding fathers used it to spread
propaganda against the British. It is still very prominent in today's society, especially with the
inclusion of social media to the platforms of entertainment and information. Political satire outlets
have risen in popularity considerably in recent years. In fact, Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" and

The Horror Of Stephen King : The King Of Horror
The King of Horror
Horror is a genre of fiction intended to frighten, scare, or disgust its readers by inducing feelings of
terror. The dark allure of the this genre calls to many readers, writers, and people of the world. This
ghoulish world of horror is created by masterful writers, such as Stephen King. Self–proclaimed
horror and suspense writer, King is one of the world's most popular authors. With his show–stopping
novels IT and The Shining, he has forever impacted the horror genre. Stephen King's writing,
inspired by his life experiences and imagination, appeals to the masses, yet remains eloquent enough
to appease critics, leaving a lasting legacy in psychological horror literature.
The life of an author plays a large part in their writing. Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine,
on September 21st, 1947. Two years later, his father, Donald King disappeared, never to be seen or
heard from again – at least by his family (Kellman 1347). This left King and his older brother in
their mother's sole care. Her meager income forced them to rely on the charity of relatives.
According to King, he felt estranged, different perhaps, from all the other kids ("Overview of
Stephen (Edwin) King"). This experience would affect him for the rest of his life. You can find this
sense of estrangement layered heavily within IT. After finishing high school in 1966, King would go
on to graduate from the University of Maine at Orono, as an english major (Kellman 1347). While in

Rhetorical Analysis Of Why We Crave Horror Movies
Horror: A Necessary Part of Life Do you enjoy watching murder, the paranormal, and any other
morbid scene which makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, your palms sweat, and your
adrenaline surge? Why people enjoy watching murder, tragedy, and carnage in their spare time has
been a mysterious phenomenon. If these gruesomely horrific scenes would not be enjoyable in real
life, why is watching a recreation of it so riveting? Stephen King, a world–renowned horror novelist,
wrote "Why We Crave Horror Movies" to give insight as to why horror movies, although gruesome
and morbid, captivate audiences. King also aims to persuade readers to continue to watch horror
movies, arguing that they are a crucial part of keeping sanity. King delves into this psychological
aspect of humans and believes that the desire to watch horror films is a normal tendency of
humankind. "Why We Crave Horror Movies" includes appeals to emotion, logic, and author
credibility in order to convince readers of the positive, normal desire to watch horror films, why it is
important to watch them, and why the reader should believe what the author is saying. King utilizes
the rhetorical devices–pathos, logos, and ethos–in an effective way through the use of metaphor,
logic, humor, and emotion to persuade readers that watching horror films is normal. "Why We Crave
Horror Movies" does not argue any opposing perspectives, causing weaknesses in the essay. Stephen

who are broken by life." This quotation seemingly implies that through exposure to art forms and
the process of creation, feelings of comfort and healing will naturally result in the individual.
However, while art may often support a cohesive nature in the 'self,' it can also serve to undermine
this sense of satisfaction and wholeness. Specifically, in both Stephen King's Misery (1987) and
Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven (2014), the texts demonstrate these negative consequences
of creation by subsequently revealing the destabilizing effects of art or artistic expression on the
individual's psychological and social performance. The exploration of this thematic trend occurs
through the symbol of the "constant reader" as a representation of the theme of obsession, the
recurring archetype of the Muse, and patterns of action of transitional shifts in character persona. As
such, it is through these tropes that the works ultimately come to question the degree to which there
is a distinction between the use of Art as a device for creation and for that of destruction.
The "constant reader" as a symbolic representation of obsession and so, the destabilizing effects of
art and artistic expression is primarily apparent in both texts through the characters of Annie Wilkes
and the Prophet. Within the novel Misery, the protagonist, Paul Sheldon, contextualizes the

William Golding Research Paper
Travis Simmons
English II Adv.
Mrs. Dotson 7
13 May 2012
Through the Eyes of William Golding William Golding was an amazing and artistic author. His
versatile writings, visionary view on life, and the way he inputted subtle and special hints of his
religious views are what made his career. Golding's life began on September 19, 1911 when he was
born in UK, St. Columb Minor to a Mr. and Mrs. Golding. Alex Golding, his father, was a
schoolteacher. While Mildred Golding, his mother, was a suffragette. Although Golding was born in
St. Columb Minor, he and his family lived in Malborough, Britain, where his parents brought him
up to be a scientist. Golding, being a reluctant boy, did not want to be a scientist. His true calling

He probably felt as if he himself were a child in the war. Scared, and alone. No orders on the
battlefield, just instinct. He probably wanted people to feel exactly what he felt. Lord of the Flies
had sold at first 2,383 copies in the United States. It was rejected even by various publishers. But
soon, the novel sky rocketed, it became very popular and it even competed with A Catcher in the
Rye. Which was the number one book at the time. Later on, Golding wrote 15 more novels and
literary works. None of which made as much of success as Lord of the Flies. That was his first hit by
popular demand. Even though his novel, Rites of Passage, earned the "Booker Prize" in 1980. It was
the first book in the trilogy, To the Ends of the Earth. "Lord of the Flies because it is both a story
with a message and because it is a great tale of adventure. My advice about reading is to do a lot of
it." States Stephen King, in response to The Book That Changed My Life, a National Book
Foundation program. If you have ever read Lord of the Flies, you can see where Stephen King
comes off by saying this. Lord of the Flies is a story with a message, and it does tell a great tale of
adventure and suspense. Golding would be really proud that his first novel, his first success, was
looked so greatly upon by another great author, with numerous accounts of famous and great novels
himself. Golding has been spoken of as a spiritual and religious man. His novels

Stephen William Hawking : Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking Stephen William Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 to Isobel and Frank
Hawking in Oxford, United Kingdom. As a young boy, Stephen showed a passion for science and
the sky. In his early years, Stephen was known as a bright kid outside of school. He was ranked third
to last his first year at St. Albans, but that did not bother him because he had his mind set on things
aside from school.
Early Life Stephen Hawking is a Physics professor at Cambridge University, located in Cambridge,

His father then realized that Stephen was not feeling well and took him to the doctor to get checked.
Hawking 's next two weeks were spent in a medical clinic in order to run more tests. A few days
passed and the doctors had the results for Stephen, he was at the early stages of amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis, also known as ALS. Though the news was devastating to him, he did not let that stop him.
Instead it motivated him to keep pursuing because there was much more he could do in life. During
this heartache of time, his suffering allowed him to become the scientist he is today. In 1968,
Stephen became a member of the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge shortly after his wife had his
first son Robert. Stephen 's Family and Love Life Stephen 's parents were Frank and Isobel
Hawkings. He was the oldest out of three other siblings, which are Mary, Philippa, and Edward who
was adopted. Stephen 's family moved to St. Albans when his dad became the head of parasitology
at the National Institute for Medical Research. His mother was a stay at home mom. She would
spend the days with her kids outside and reading books. When Hawkings was released from the
hospital he met Jane Wilde who he instantly fell in love with and married two years later. Two years
after that he and his wife had their first child Robert, then three years after they had their second
child Lucy. Nine

St. Stephen Research Paper

  • 1. St. Stephen Research Paper St. Stephen, the First Martyr's feast day is December 26. The date of his birth is not known. He died in c. 34. Very little is known about St. Stephen. He is first talked about in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 6:5). St. Stephen is the patron saint of stonemasons, deacons, casketmakers, horses, headaches, sufferers, widowers, etc..... He has many symbols. In Eastern art, he is usually seen in the robes of a deacon, often, swinging a censer (the container in which incense is burned) and is sometimes shown holding a small church. In Western art, he is often shown holding the stones that were the instrument of his martyrdom, as well as palm. Both Eastern and Western art have shown him wearing the martyr's crown. St. Stephen is first mentioned in the Acts 6:5 as one of the seven deacons appointed by the Apostles to distribute food and charitable aid to poorer members of the community in the early church. The reason for the appointment of the deacons is said to have been that there was dissatisfaction among Hellenistic Jews that their widows were being slighted in preference to Hebraic ones is distribution of alms from the community funds. It is said that St. Stephen was "full of faith and the Holy Spirit." It is also said ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stephen about his beliefs. These people convinced some men to say that Stephen was speaking against Moses and even against God. This wasn't true but many people got upset about it because they believed it was true. They took St. Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish rulers. These were powerful men who were able to make life and death decisions about people. St. Stephen told them about the whole history of the Jewish people beginning with Abraham. The Sanhedrin did not like what they were hearing. They put their hands over their ears, yelled at the top of their voices so that they could not hear what he was saying. They dragged him outside and began to stone him to ... A Brief Note On The Ice Bucket Challenge Harlee Kowals 5th ALS Research Essay 10/29/14 Physics When the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' started becoming more and more prominent, and people were becoming more aware of what exactly ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is, they began asking: "who is someone that is famous that suffers or has suffered from this disease?" Most people's obvious answer is Lou Gehrig, who is a famous baseball player that succumbed to this disease back in the early 1900s, and happens to be the other name people refer this disease as. I answered with "Stephen Hawking", and people would give me a bewildered look as if asking me "who the heck is that?" I would stare back in absolute shock and little bit of horror, because honestly, who has not heard of the man that basically theorized black holes and extended Einstein's idea of general relativity with quantum physics theory. Stephen Hawking, who is a little less than a god, is "arguably the most famous scientist alive today (Contributions and Achievements)", and I would say that he is definitely one of the most important scientific figures that has ever been introduced to the human race. This essay will present Stephen Hawking and dive deep into his life pulling out the smallest particulars, and then explaining how certain and specific details have made him into who and what he is today. To start with, here's a brief Stephen Hawking biography. Stephen William Hawking was born to Frank and Isobel Hawking on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, United Kingdom. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Research Paper On Stephen Hawking Jessica Ledesma Mrs. Blank Honors Chemistry 11 October 2017 Stephen Hawking "Possibly the most famous Physicist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking...is regarded by many as the greatest genius of our day". Stephen Hawking (a world–renowned Physicist) was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, United Kingdom. His parents were Frank and Isobel Hawking. His mother, Isobel, was a secretary for a medical research institute in Hampstead. Stephen Hawking was the oldest child of four in his family. • 9. Two Views of Violence Two Views of Violence It is easy to interpret that the world is more violent today than in the past, when violence is present on many television and radio channels and dispersed so liberally throughout the internet. The truth of the matter, however, is that physical violence has always been a part of our lives. Beginning with the first murder in the Bible by Cain, an early example of violence in literature, physical violence has often been a part of what one reads. In comparing the novel Maggie: A Girl of the Streets by Stephen Crane, and the novel Deadwood Dick's Doom by Edward Wheeler, one can see that both novels portray many types of physical violence, that there is not necessarily a relationship between the physical violence and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In retaliation, little Jimmie "kicked repeatedly at his father's shins" (Crane 44). Most of the main characters in this novel were uneducated, because they had to start work early in life. This is evident in their manner of speech. Their lack of education kept them from realizing the effects alcohol has on violence, and they drank a lot. Every time they drank, they became more violent. Jimmie is happiest, though, when he has "a dollar in his pocket" (Crane 47). When he doesn't, he becomes despondent, and then violent. When comparing the two novels, however, Deadwood Dick does not make a connection between low–socioeconomic standing, and violence. Piute Dave is a "well–heeled but notorious" young gambler. If one were to consult a thesaurus, one would see that the antonym for "well–heeled" is "poor." One knows Dave is not poor, also, because he and his band of ruffians did not take long to discover "paying dirt" (Wheeler 1). Nevertheless, he and his band are certainly violent. Even the government officials are "cognizant of the lawlessness within the borders of Death Notch," and they hesitate to interfere (Wheeler 1). With no one to stop them, they continue to fight. Hank Shakespeare, the Poet, is the "bully over all, and always ripe for a spree" and "never backward about waltzing right into a quarrel" (Wheeler 8). One views a stabbing when Piute Dave ... My mom realized that I could not respond to any of her sounds when I was a baby, so she took me to the doctors to figure out what was wrong with me. When the doctors discovered that I was deaf, they told my mom, and she was worried that I would have a hard time in my life due to my disability. After failed attempts to hear with hearing aids, at fifteen months old I had surgery on the right side of the head to get a cochlear implant, which are complex electronic devices implanted in the cochleah that help provide sounds to the brain by bi–passing the ear drum. After this, my parents enrolled me in a deaf school in St. Louis, and I began to learn how to talk and communicate with others using my new hearing device. The school did not want to teach their students sign language or lip reading; instead, it wanted to teach basic social skills, so the kids can have less difficulty in social settings, and the students can relate to hearing people. This was difficult for me since I began to talk at three years old, but the school helped me in so many ways to be the person I am today and taught me how to express myself in words. However, I could not rely on that school forever. I had to move to Ohio when I was six years old, and I learned that I was enrolled in a public school. I was excited to finally go to a school with more students who are normal hearing people and for once be like everyone else. What I did not realize was that I would be surrounded by hearing people, and they would not relate to me like people did at my previous school. Although I thought that would be the case, many people did not care that I was deaf due to the fact that we were too young, and I became relieved that they were accepting of who I was. As years went on, I had many friends, and they were there for me despite my deafness, and I was thankful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Settings compose the nucleus for literary works and depend on time and place, which help to establish the background of the work. Plot, character, theme, and style also compose fundamental components of settings. I'll discuss characters roles and presentation in three different works, which are "Jump and Other Stories" by Nadine Gordminer, "My Beautiful Laundrette" by Hanif Kureishi and "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou. You can't talk, and you can hardly move. This disease is called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS and this is what Stephen Hawking has. Despite the fact that he is handicapped, he has managed to become one of the greatest scientists ever. Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo Galilei) in Oxford, England. As a kid, he was fascinated with the idea of an ever–growing universe that he lives in, and would occasionally lie on his front lawn, with his family, observing the sky and taking turns looking through a telescope at the stars. After his final exam, Stephen was on the line between first and second honors. To determine his degree, the professors decided to give him an oral exam. He passed the test with excellence, and therefore, went on to Cambridge. At Cambridge University, he was going to study cosmetology, a branch of physics. Fortunately for him he decided to study theoretical physics, not experimental physics where he would have had to set up many experiments, which he could not have done after he got ALS. By now, Stephen had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. ALS slowly destroys the nerves in the brain and spine. ALS victims usually die within 2–5 years because it destroys the muscles used for breathing which leads to suffocation. When he was diagnosed with ALS, he pretty much gave up his life. After he did not die after two years, he realized he could go on with ALS and his study of cosmetology. Although he was weak, he could still walk. After those 2 years, he decided he could not waste any time, there were things he wanted to do in his life. Hawking wanted to get married and get a Ph.D. So he was engaged to Jane Wilde in 1965. Hawking said, "It [getting married to her] made me determined to live, to go on. Jane really gave me the will to live." Then he got his Ph.D. and started to work at Cambridge. The design and architecture of sacred sites, is considered to be a highly important aspect in the correct functioning of rituals that take place within, namely two main world religions: Christianity/Catholicism and Judaism. "Christianity has a close relationship with Judaism, both historically and theologically. Jesus, the twelve disciples, the author of most of the New Testament and the members of the earliest Christian churches were all Jews. Jesus' family also followed Jewish customs and Jesus frequently quoted the Hebrew Bible. Followers of Jesus believe him to be the Messiah which was a figure predicted in the Jewish Bible."(Religion Facts, 2014) Rituals through both these religions help the participant gain a sense of closeness to their divine being and aid their faith in ways such meditation, prayer, reflection and celebration. This report will aim to explain how these sacred sites are designed in order to facilitate rituals and reflect a persons experience and closeness with the divine as they partake in the sacred rituals of their religion. • 27. Stephen Hawking Contribution Stephen Hawking is well known for being smart, despite his medical condition, but does anyone ever care to understand what he has contributed to education? Or what he has contributed to knowledge? No, because the only thing media shows us is how he is capable of many things, even though he is disabled. Many people have the issue of making that connection between what Hawking is known for, and what he has actually done to be who he is today. Hawking is a brilliant man, and he has, and will, continue contributing to education in the fields of math and science for as long as he is capable. Hawking was born January 8th, 1942 in Oxford, England. He is still living at the grand age of 75 years old. Early in his childhood, the stars and sky captured his attention–even though his father wanted his eldest son to pursue a medical career, just like him. He attended St. Albans School for his primary and secondary education. He was often at the bottom of his class due to the fact that he was very inattentive during school, and spent little time on his studies. Being at the bottom didn't stop his desire for education as he trudged on and was admitted into Oxford University at the age of 17. By the time he reached college, he wanted to study mathematics; but Oxford didn't offer a degree in that specialty, so he ventured over towards the physics major. He graduated Oxford with honors in natural science and went on to Trinity Hall at Cambridge University to obtain a PhD in cosmology. (A) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Greatest Heroes Of Stephen Hawking "Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change"(BrainyQuote) This is a quote from the famous Stephen Hawking, which shows that intelligence is not measured by how much you know, but rather by what you do with what you know. Stephen Hawking has continually showed the many characteristics of a hero through his life, even while fighting with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Stephen Hawking grew up in England and was diagnosed with ALS at a very young age. However, he did not let this stop him from shaking the foundations of science forever. Stephen Hawking is considered one of the greatest heroes in science due to his perseverance and courage in relation to his medical handicap and the lack of information on his field. A hero is someone who makes the choice to do what others lack the strength to do, who has courage like no others, who puts others needs before theirs, and someone who does this without the thought of external gain. A true hero is someone who shows "a concern for other people in need... knowing there is a personal risk" (Zimbardo). The core qualities at the center of any hero are persistence, courage, and selflessness. Courage is defined as the mindset that enables a person to face danger without fear, while selflessness is prescribed as the ability to put other's needs before yours. The most important quality of a hero is persistence and is described Thompson 2 as the continuance on the journey towards a goal or action in spite of difficulty or opposition. Keeping ... Compare And Contrast The Body Vs Stand By Stephen King James Chacha Mr St. John and Mrs. Herron English 10 03 April 2016 "The Body vs. Stand by Me" Did you know that Stand by Me a academy award winning film directed by Rob Steiner was based of a novel called The Body by Stephen King ? In fact in both the novel and film the plot is the same but there are some small changes. The plot is about four twelve year olds who embark into a journey to discover the body of Ray Brower. During their journey each boy learns something extraordinary about themselves and about there friends. The main conflict in the novel is that there is another group of older boys who are also searching for the body. The novel was released in 1982 and the film was released in 1986. In the novel the setting of the story takes place in a small town named Castle Rock that is located in Maine in the year 1960 and in the film the setting is Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959. This difference would be considered a minor change because it is only one year apart from the original date in the novel and the change of the state does not really matter. Adding to differences is that in the novel in chapter seven there is a story that is told by Gordie called "Stud City' in the film it is not shown or mentioned. This would be considered a major change because the story shows how smart and mature Gordie is for a twelve year old and it is important for the build up of the character but it is excluded from the film. Another difference is that in the novel when the boys find the body and they confront the other boys Chris pulls the gun out to make them leave. In the film it is Gordie who takes out the gun to make them leave. This is a major change because in the novel it helped make the ending make more sense and helped Chris' buildup as a character. In addition to differences in the novel when the boys are on there journey they go into the pond to swim because they want to. In the film they go into the pond because they have to in order to get across. This isn't considered a major change because it doesn't affect the plot in any way. • 57. Compare And Contrast Stephen Hawking And St. Thomas Of The... " I think the universe was created out of nothing according to the laws of science. It has no beginning and no end."– Stephen Hawking. Throughout the ages there has been countless beliefs on how the universe may have been created. Some people have concluded the universe was by designed by a God while others have concluded the universe was formed in the beginning and end of singularities that formed a boundary to spacetime to which the laws of science breaks down. Since 500 B.C and present time, countless of people have formed theories . Sadly, numerous of theorists don't have concrete proof. In spite of this, people can still compare and contrast theories people have made such as Stephen Hawking and St. Thomas of the Aquinas. St. Thomas was born in Aquino, Italy in 1225. He studied in the Paris, France and Cologne, Germany. His teacher was Albert the Great. Aquinas was later ordained a Dominican Priest. He went on to publish his masterpiece, The Summa Theologica, used human reasoning to harmonize the truths of the Bible with Greek Philosophy. In the Summa Theologica St. Thomas wrote five proofs to elucidate furthermore to God's existence. The First Proof is Prime Mover: nothing can move itself so therefore the mover must be God. The Second Proof the Uncreated Creator: nothing can create itself so God is the invisible creation maker. Third is 'Necessary Being' all existent things depend upon other things for their existence, there must exist at least one being. Fourth perfect standard by which all is measured. Lastly Intelligent Designer: everything in the universe is intelligent the being that created us is intelligent. St. Thomas would later stop publishing his works because he thought humans have a small glimpse of the whole universe. However, Stephen Hawking's story differs from St, Thomas. • 71. Rhetorical Analysis Of Why We Crave Horror Movies Horror: A Necessary Part of Life Do you enjoy watching murder, the paranormal, and any other morbid scene which makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up, your palms sweat, and your adrenaline surge? Why people enjoy watching murder, tragedy, and carnage in their spare time has been a mysterious phenomenon. If these gruesomely horrific scenes would not be enjoyable in real life, why is watching a recreation of it so riveting? Stephen King, a world–renowned horror novelist, wrote "Why We Crave Horror Movies" to give insight as to why horror movies, although gruesome and morbid, captivate audiences. King also aims to persuade readers to continue to watch horror movies, arguing that they are a crucial part of keeping sanity. King delves into this psychological aspect of humans and believes that the desire to watch horror films is a normal tendency of humankind. "Why We Crave Horror Movies" includes appeals to emotion, logic, and author credibility in order to convince readers of the positive, normal desire to watch horror films, why it is important to watch them, and why the reader should believe what the author is saying. King utilizes the rhetorical devices–pathos, logos, and ethos–in an effective way through the use of metaphor, logic, humor, and emotion to persuade readers that watching horror films is normal. "Why We Crave Horror Movies" does not argue any opposing perspectives, causing weaknesses in the essay. Stephen King neglects to argue reasons against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Destabilizing Effects Of Art Notable artist, Vincent van Gogh, is credited with saying that the purpose of "Art is to console those who are broken by life." This quotation seemingly implies that through exposure to art forms and the process of creation, feelings of comfort and healing will naturally result in the individual. However, while art may often support a cohesive nature in the 'self,' it can also serve to undermine this sense of satisfaction and wholeness. Specifically, in both Stephen King's Misery (1987) and Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven (2014), the texts demonstrate these negative consequences of creation by subsequently revealing the destabilizing effects of art or artistic expression on the individual's psychological and social performance. The exploration of this thematic trend occurs through the symbol of the "constant reader" as a representation of the theme of obsession, the recurring archetype of the Muse, and patterns of action of transitional shifts in character persona. As such, it is through these tropes that the works ultimately come to question the degree to which there is a distinction between the use of Art as a device for creation and for that of destruction. The "constant reader" as a symbolic representation of obsession and so, the destabilizing effects of art and artistic expression is primarily apparent in both texts through the characters of Annie Wilkes and the Prophet. Within the novel Misery, the protagonist, Paul Sheldon, contextualizes the "constant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
