Edgar Allan Poe born on January 19, 1809, was known as the creator of the modern detective story
and innovator of the science fiction genre. Although, people identify him because of his horror
stories as well as his haunting lyric poetry, there was a different side of him other than a gruesome,
mysterious individual prowling in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries. Poe's childhood was very
tragic and affected his adult life when growing up. Poe was the second son of actors David and
Elizabeth Poe. Shortly after Poe was born, his father abandoned the family in 1810 and the
following death of his twenty–four year old mother in 1811, left Poe an orphan at the young age of
three. Poe was adopted by a guy named john, who was a strict unemotional ... Show more content

Poe aimed to create a different change in the magazine industry but failed to do so because of the
unnecessary funding. Poe, most likely made his success in fame in January 1845. Poe became a
household name; he had published his two books within that year and started his own magazine
business. There were rumors about Poe with a different woman his wife health made leave the city
and go back. Virginia died of tuberculosis ten years later. Poe dearly loved his wife and when she
died he fell apart. When he wrote "The Raven", the character is grief over death of "Lenore" when a
raven visits him. Raven is symbolic figure that is used in Poe poem to symbolize death. " Thy God
hath lent thee–by these angels he hath sent thee Respite– and Nepenthe from the memories of
Lenore!"(The Raven). Which, Lenore is the representation of Poe's deceased wife Virginia. Poe
want to hang to his wife's memory because he just doesn't want to let go over her death. He was a
lost soul and was devastate. Majority of the critics thought after the death of his wife, he would be
done for good. The critics were right about Poe and he lived only about two more years in giving
lectures and writing for his latest magazine, " The Stylus". Poe's works have received criticism as
well as much praise, over the years. Numerous professionals who researched Poe's life and his
writings, knew that his writings were reflections of his real life situations. However,

The Father of Gothicism
"I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered
myself to use intemperate language to my wife. At length, I even offered her personal violence."
This line comes from the story The Black Cat written by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe has been proclaimed
the "Father of Gothicism" by many due to his grotesque short stories and poems. Gothic writers had
their characters be more "prone to sin and self–destruction" than any other movement had
experienced (Poets 2). This mysterious style of writing lasted until the 19th century, and other
popular gothic writers and characters include Bram Stokers Dracula, and Mary Shelly's
Frankenstein. Poe along with all gothic writers used disturbing, morbid words as well as
supernatural story outlines to catch the reader's attention, as he was one of the first to introduce the
harming of females to the literature world. Gothicism style of writing always keeps the reader
shocked throughout the entire story trying to guess what's next. Edgar Poe was born in Boston to
Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. on January 18, 1809 and experienced an extremely dark
childhood. Poe unfortunately never got to build a relationship with his father because he abandoned
the family by 1811. Poe's life changed dramatically after his mother's death on December 8, 1811
and his father's passing a few short days after by tuberculosis, which caused his family filled with
two siblings to be split up into different homes.

Similarities Between Edgar Allan Poe And Mark Twain
Throughout the nineteenth century, numerous influential writers rose throughout the United States.
Among them, Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain were two authors of famous works. They both
shared a myriad of similarities and differences in life and literary style. With all things considered,
the following will detail the relationship between Twain and Poe in their writings, time periods, and
impact in American culture.
When looking at both of these writers, their respective time periods and the geography of where
they lived needs to be considered. Poe wrote during the early nineteenth century and spent most of
his time in Northeastern America. On the other hand, Twain lived during the other half of the
century in the Civil War in the South. As a result, Twain was largely affected by Southern customs
and the battle against slavery, while Poe was largely unaffected by his living place, most of his
writings "[reflecting on] his grief" and other macabre (biography.com authors). An example of their
shaped works include: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the former, and Tales of Grotesque
and Arabesque by the latter. Nevertheless, despite influenced by different regions and times, both of
the authors focused on human nature. Poe moreso on the depravity of man while Twain looked at
class and inequality during his time, noted as "fond of unfortunate human beings" (Roberts). As can
be seen, different places of habitation and times can have a role on writing topics and ideals.

"Annabel Lee" to her in 1849. In 1836, he received an editorship at The Southern Literary
Messenger in Richmond. Around this time, Edgar began using drugs and dinking very heavily. He
even showed up at events drunk. Still, he was writing incredible stories and poems. Poe received a
large amount of recognition, not only for his poetry and fiction, but as an exceptional literary critic.
He also achieved popular success, especially following the publication of his poem "The Raven."
Edgar had fallen for Merrie next and she died of brain cancer. After a period in which he was

unconscious in a Baltimore gutter. Edgar was taken to Washington College Hospital. Some say that

Literary Analysis Of The Tell Tale Heart
Among the many strange and complex short stories of Poe, "The Tell–Tale Heart" has come to be
known as one of the most mysterious and psychologically intriguing. Poe's preoccupations with
death, with madness, and with troubled human relationships all find their culmination in this brief
narrative. The murder of the old man and its aftermath, which form the center of the story, are told
with dazzling clarity, a clarity that itself obscures the meaning of the act and calls into question the
emotional stability of the unnamed narrator. The subjectivism of this story, the confusion of the line
between reader and character within the narrative, and the use of language support the claim that
Poe prefigures and indeed develops many of the tropes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These two stories mark Poe's increasing interest in and ability to portray the psychologically
gruesome and the supernatural, as well as his return to poetry. The sparse plot of "The Tell–Tale
Heart" concerns the "murder aforethought" of an old man, who is never named nor described fully,
by the narrator, who is also never identified. Its narration is clearly retrospective but otherwise
unlocated; the circumstances of the confession of this crime are never described, and so it seems
that the narrator is speaking directly and passionately to the reader. The sequence of events is simple
enough: the narrator is disturbed by the eye of an old man; he complains that "one of his eyes
resembled that of a vulture–a pale blue eye, with a film over it." The narrator decides to rid himself
of this eye by killing the old man. This is accomplished after seven painstaking nights of creeping
into the man's room in order to see if the offending eye is open. It is only on the eighth night that the
old man opens his eyes, and the crime is committed. How the man is actually killed is not described
in detail: the narrator merely

How Did Edgar Allan Poe Influence His Work?
Every year, dressed in black with a large brimmed hat and a white scarf (Blitz) at midnight, a man
stops by Edgar Allan Poe's grave. Carrying a bottle of cognac, he mutters this phase, " Cineri gloria
sera venit" meaning "Fame comes too late for the dead" (Blitz) in English. The man takes a drink of
the cognac and pours some out of the bottle for Poe. Edgar Allan Poe is still an inspiration to many
even today. Despite Edgar Allan Poe growing up parentless and forced to live with his adopted
family, he went to revolutionize literature of the 20th century and continues to entertain and inspire
many today.

Although Poe had a rocky childhood he was able to grow into a successful writer and inspiration to
many today. Unique and unlike any other writer Poe was able to write his short stories and wasn't
hesitant about it either. "Poe had an extreme influence on two genres still being read to this day
which would be Science fiction and Detective genres" ("biography of"). Poe later went on to be
what some could say America's first great writing critic. "Poe often called out authors that he
believed were intimidating other authors" ("Spiridon"). "He was one of the first writers to really
focus on Gothic themes and to make it okay to write about death in a new way" ("HRF"). This all
started when "Poe had finally landed a job as an editor for a newspaper because, of winning a
contest with his story "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle"" ("Biography of"). Later Poe became the
manager of the paper. His first volume of short stories after that were, "Tales of the Grotesque and

England, during which he attended boarding school. He then later came back to Richmond and

The Poetry and Prose of Edgar Allen Poe
Art is in everything. Artists can be experts with a paintbrush, phenomenal with piano or a master of
their pen. Authors and poets have a chance to manipulate words like no other artist can. Poets in
particular can use their words to encompass different kinds of art by painting a picture with lyrical
rhythm and imagery. Poets may be common, but for their poetry to be timeless it must be
universally relatable. Edgar Allen Poe is regarded as one of the most famous poets in American
history due to his well renowned debauchery, gothic tales of terror, and poems which are taught in
schools and still analyzed today.
Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts in the early nineteenth century. It is well known

Each category had a surplus of corresponding poems. Mark Canada of University of North Carolina
at Pembroke cites critic Rodger Asselineau with the quote:
If Roderick Usher, Egaeus, Metzengerstein, and even Dupin are all alike, if Ligeia, Morella, and
Eleonora look like sisters, it is because, whether he consciously wanted to or not, he always takes
the story of his own life as a starting point, a rather empty story on the whole since he had mostly
lived in his dreams, imprisoned by his neuroses and obsessed by the image of his dead mother.
(Canada)
This expertly defines why all of Poe's themes were reoccurring. Another inspiration for Poe's themes
was his fascination with psychology. Phrenology is known as the study of the idea that certain
functions are controlled by differing parts of the brain. In order to explore this idea, Poe used themes
such as self–destruction and madness in his poetry (Canada). Based on this premise, Mark Canada
explains that he believes Poe to have had a "potent right cerebral hemisphere" which is believed to
be the center of vivid imagery, music, emotions and "self–destructive urges;" Poe was consistently
documented to have each of these traits. Poe is also well known for his lucid imagery, lyric meter
and tales of horror, depicted with rhyme and rank symbolism.
Certain poems contain repeating themes that best showcase the effect of the

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, to parents who were traveling actors. His
father David Poe Jr. died probably in 1810. Elizabeth Hopkins Poe died in 1811, leaving three
children. Edgar was taken into the home of a merchant from Richmond named John Allan. The
remaining children were cared for by others. Poe's brother William died young and sister Rosalie

teachers in Richmond said: "While the other boys wrote mere mechanical verses, Poe wrote
genuine poetry; the boy was a born poet." Poe was brought up partly in England (1815–20),

neglect of his duties. Apparently he did this out of his own strong desire to be released. In 1833 Poe
lived in Baltimore with his father's sister Mrs. Maria Clemm. After winning a prize of $50 for the
short story 'MS Found in a Bottle,' he started a career as a staff member of various magazines, some
of which were; the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond (1835–37), Burton's Gentleman's
Magazine in Philadelphia (1839–40), and Graham's Magazine (1842–43). During these years he
wrote some of his best–known stories. Southern Literary Messenger he had to leave partially due to
his alcohol addiction. In 1836 Poe married his 13–year–old cousin Virginia Clemm. She bust a
blood vessel in 1842, and remained virtually invalid until she died from tuberculosis five years later.
After Virginia's death, Poe began to lose his struggle with drinking and drugs. He had several
romances, including an affair with the poet Sarah Helen Whitman, who said: "His proud
reserve, his profound melancholy, his unworldliness – may we not say his unearthliness of nature –
made his character one very difficult of comprehension to the casual observer." In 1849 Poe
became engaged to Elmira Royster, who was at that time Mrs. Shelton. To Virginia he addressed the
famous poem 'Annabel Lee' (1849) – its subject, Poe's favorite, is the death of a beautiful

To start off, an allegory is an extended narrative which carries a second meaning along with its
surface story, the people and/or events are symbolic. A few allegories are the abbey, the prince and
the seven colour–coded rooms. As mentioned before, the prince and his guests use the abbey to
isolate themselves from the Red Death. The abbey represents man's efforts to avoid death. However,
regardless of wealth, social class, and power, death still arrives and again, proves to the readers that
death is inevitable. Now in the abbey, Prospero arranges in a row from east to west, seven colour–
coded rooms in the palace. The colours and their representations are blue (birth), purple (youth),
green (adolescence), orange (adulthood), white (old age), violet (imminent death), and black/scarlet
(death itself). All of the rooms is an allegory of the progression of human life. The prince arranged
the rooms from east to west. East is associated with "beginnings" such as birth because the sun rises
in the east, and west being the opposing direction of east. It is associated with endings such as death.
Next, it can be said that Prince Prospero's name sort of sounds similar to the term prosperity.
Prosperity means the state of being prosperous. From this, it can be concluded that he is noble,
wealthy, powerful and respected. Also, he "was happy and dauntless and sagacious"(3). However
though, he still ends up dying. It can be seen that the deathly figure is a socioeconomic equalizer. He
does not care who the prince is or how wealthy and powerful he may be. He kills everyone because

"The Raven " was a lyrical narrative poem. The raven in the poem represents death and as it
continuously shows up at the narrator's door, and the only words it said were, "nevermore." The
narrator is constantly reminded of his lost love Lenore and how he cannot forget her and wants to be
with her even though he is trying to move past it. There is major symbolism in the writing, from the
raven sitting itself on "the bust of pallas," the words nevermore and lastly the raven itself. Sadly the
writing of "The Raven" was the pinnacle of his life. Two years after the publication, Poe's wife
Virginia died of tuberculosis. One of the last things, Poe wrote was the writing of the "Poetic
Principle," which presented Poe literary theories. It has become one of the most influential essays in
literature history and has impacted many poets. Finally in 1849, the odd death of Edgar Allan Poe,
Poe was found in the streets of Baltimore semi contious and then taken into the hospital. Four days
later died on October 7, 1849. No one knew what had happened to him and still to this day many
ideas have been speculated. His enemy wrote his obituary and his image was tarnished for a while.

Analysis Of Poe 's ' Annabel Lee ' And ' The Raven '
Poe's philosophy is depicted in "Annabel Lee" and "The Raven"; a man of dark and depressing
poems who was influenced during his hard, emotional, life to write. His poems describe the mental
and emotion devastations a person's state of mind can reach. Despite his hard life and mysterious
death he faced, the speaker can recognize his struggles through his life to become successful with
his literary works.
Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Shortly after, Poe's mother,
Elizabeth, an actor from an English theatrical family, passed away in Richmond, Virginia in 1811.
With the lack of a father as a traveler, David Poe, was hardly around to support him in his life. With
Poe's financial problem getting worse, John Allan, a tobacco exporter and care taker of when he was
younger, passed away and left Poe completely out of his will. During this time, Poe published
stories and poems in the Messenger. Eventually, Poe married to his thirteen–year–old cousin,
Virginia Clemm, after being forced through financial problems to move in. When Poe later began to
have feelings for Virginia. Facing disagreements with the age difference they married at, Messenger
rejected him, putting Poe into a difficult position requiring him to move to New York for editorial
work. In 1839, he joined Burton's Gentlemen's Magazine, which he later left to create his own
literary magazine. Unfortunately, Poe's business was unsuccessful, so he became an editor for

The Genius of Edgar Allan Poe Essay
The Genius of Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe remains today one of the most unique figures in American literary history. Critics
have likened him to both Leonardo Da Vinci and the "Jingle Man" ; either the keystone of American
literature or simply a writer of fashionable entertainment. As a person and a writer, Poe is also a
collection of contradictions. One thing is for certain, few people have left a more lasting impression
in the minds of readers than Poe. Subsequent authors have never been able to improve upon the
style which Poe created and mastered. Poe's tales have transcended generations of American readers
and lasted through many shifts in literary thinking. One of the few things that is as strange and

When Edgar was six years old, the Allans moved to England because of John's business ventures.
They enrolled Poe in the Manor House School at Stoke Newington, which he later used as the
setting of his short story "William Wilson." As a child, Edgar was described as smart and athletic;
and because of this both of his parents adored him, especially his mother.
Adolescent Concerns
Edgar's picturesque family life started to deteriorate as he reached puberty. While attending private
schooling, Poe often felt inferior to the other kids because of his meager past. The young Poe was
very athletic and liked to run, box, and play other sports, but was exceedingly unsociable towards
his peers, and because of this they often rejected him. In addition, Poe's special affection towards his
foster mother caused problems for the adolescent child. As was with his natural mother, Edgar felt
much closer to his new mother than his new father. While it is not clear whether Edgar had an
Oedipal complex, his affection for his mother did result in tension with his father John. The young
Poe returned with his family to Richmond, Virginia in 1822 at the age of 13. Poe's somewhat strange
affection for women was evident while he was still in grade school. At the age of 14 Poe fell in love
with Jane Stith Craig Stanard, the young mother of a schoolmate. Ms. Stanard, who Edgar referred
to a Helen, died of a brain tumor shortly afterwards. This

The Influence of Edgar Allan Poe's Life on His Morbid...
Edgar Allan Poe is the most morbid of all American authors. Poe made his impact in Gothic fiction,
especially for the tales of the macabre of which he is so renowned for. "How can so strange & so

Poe in a reverential spirit simply Requiescat in Pace [?]" – (Alfred Lord Tennyson's reply to the Poe
Memorial committee, February 18, 1876). Poe's own life story sheds light on the darkness of his
writings. Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809 to David Poe and Elizabeth

"Mr. Poe could not possibly send forth a book without some marks of his genius, and mixed up with
the dross we find much sterling ore." – (From a review of Poe's Tales, September 6, 1845.) In 1845,
Poe, 27, and Virginia, 13, married, and were happy for a time. In 1842, Virginia ruptured a blood
vessel; the first sign of the ill health that plagued her short life. Poe turned to alcohol to cope with
her illness and the stress of his dying wife. Two years later, Virginia died of tuberculosis, and Poe's
own death would follow shortly two years after that. The Raven, published in 1845, brought Poe
temporary popular and critical acclaim. The Raven was a personal challenge Edgar imposed upon
himself. Poe originally wanted to use a parrot instead of a raven, but he felt it didn't evoke the right
tone. He also wanted to write a 100 line poem, but ended up with 108 lines, which was good enough
for Poe. The one and only novel Poe completed, Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, was
about these crew members drawing straws for who would be eaten after their boat capsized; they
drew straws, and ate Richard Parker. The book flopped. Even though Poe said it was a true story,
almost all the critics didn't believe him. They were right to since at the time Poe's book wasn't true,
but just five years later a similar wreck happened with the same lead character name Richard Parker,
though there was no cannibalism. But

After the death of Poe's father, he was in immense debt and eventually became homeless. Although

The narrator 's guilt consumes him once more, the reader may assume, once he says, "I hear all
things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell" (Poe, 716). The narrator 's guilty
conscience causes him to hear and contemplate evil thoughts. This battle with his conscience,
merges into one of Poe 's different thematic subjects, good vs. evil. Last but not least, Poe exhibits
guilt after committing the crime. The narrator cannot handle what he has done. The officers in the
story present an even larger obstacle because their presence sends the narrator into insanity. He says,
"Villains! I shrieked, Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear upon the planks! Here, here! It is
the beating of his hideous heart!" (Poe, 718). The narrator cannot sustain his act of being a 'fearless '
person, for his guilt drove him into such madness that he felt that he had begun to hear the beating
of what he had thought to be the old man 's heart, long after his gruesome murder (Kirkland, 13).
Poe uses these examples to convey the message that guilt is sometimes too much of a burden on the
human heart. In addition to Poe 's theme of guilt to deliver his message, he also uses symbols.
In "The Tell–Tale Heart," the narrator becomes fascinated in this old man 's eye. He names it the
'vulture eye ' and credits it for his behavior in murdering the old man. A vulture is something that

In 1836 Poe married his thirteen–year–old cousin, Virginia Clemms. Much of his early work went
unnoticed and it took until 1840 before Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque was published in two
volumes. This included the famous story The Fall of the House of Usher. Plans for starting his own
magazine did not lead too much and he continued to work as a magazine editor for various
publications. His Tales and The Raven and Other Poems, published in 1845, did bring him some
recognition but unfortunately it was not enough to sustain his family financially. Mrs. Clemms and
Poe's wife Virginia nearly starved to death one winter. After his wife's death in 1847 Poe became
increasingly unstable and his dependence on tempted suicide in 1848 and tragically died in 1849,
five days after being found in a delirious and semi–conscious condition in Baltimore.
2. Allan Poe's Works and Literary Achievement

Grotesque and Arabesque, contains 25 short tales includes Ms. Found in a Bottle, Berenice, Ligeia,
Morella, The Fall of the House of Usher, William Wilson, etc. Later two short tales collection, The

Masque Of The Red Death Essay
The Masque of the Red Death was published in May of 1842 by Edgar Allen Poe. It's clearly an
allegorical story, one that can be more narrowly defined as a parable. A parable is defined by
Encyclopedia Britannica as a fable–like story which uses humans instead of animals, and draws an
analogy "between a particular instance of human behavior...and human behaviour at large". It's
specifically designed to deliver a moral message or lesson, and the one in Masque is that no one can
escape death, no matter what artifices are placed to obstruct it. This is interesting, but the real
magnificence of the tale is in the literary genre in which Poe tells it, which is the Grotesque. The
definition of this term in literature is a bit indistinct, but can be reduced to a couple of key
characteristics: The Grotesque fits in between the real and the fantastic, while being simultaneously
centered between funny and frightening (The Grotesque). Poe's ... Show more content on

The goriness and irony of Prince Prospero's revel tell only half the story of the danse macabre." (Di
Renzo, 193)
Harold Bloom argues that the novella isn't grotesque at all, but Arabesque: "The Mask of the Red
Death is one of Poe's most memorable Arabesques" (Bloom, 13). While this is partially true because
of the psychological aspects of the piece, it's not entirely accurate as a representation of the entire
work.
The creation of terror, the juxtaposition of the real and supernatural, the absurdity and almost
comical aspects, all the poles of what we understand the grotesque to mean have been solidly
touched upon in The Masque of the Red Death. Poe himself refined and encapsulated a coherent
meaning for the grotesque, and the tale stands as a perfect example of what a good representation of
it should strive to

What Are The Similarities Between Edgar Allan Poe And...
Antebellum Authors: Edgar Allan Poe and Washington Irving
Although the progression was slow, the Antebellum era ushered in literary talent upon the American
scene. In the Nineteenth century the United States culture was generally from Europe or closely
based on the European themes. Although many American books continued to be reprints of foreign
books, a few American writers started to create works with more American based genres. One of the
most important genres and unique influences to the American literary scene was that of the short
story. To this day, short stories continue to be developed by American writers. Although the
expansion of American literature was slow during the beginnings of this age, two prominent figures
use the short story genre to help kick start an explosion of American literary talent. Edgar Allan Poe
and Washington Irving were integral in distinguishing the Antebellum era's literary style.
To many, Edgar Allan Poe was considered to be one of the top authors of his time. Born In
Massachusetts on January 19, 1809, he was the second born by his parents David and Elizabeth
Arnold Poe, who were both theatrical performers. Poe was raised by John Allen after his father
deserted the family and his mother died from illness. His foster father was a tobacco merchant who
provided Poe many advantages as a child. Although Poe attended the University of Virginia, he left
after only one semester and joined the army. After failing in the army, Poe began

Edgar Allan Poe And Transcendentalism
Poe has the a lot of the American Dark Romanticism elements in his works. He did not believe the
qualities of Transcendentalism. He believed that there was a darker side to people. He emphasized
human error, proneness to sin, insanity, melancholy qualities, and irrational behavior. Indirectly Poe
responses to early Puritan writings because they wrote about how people should use logic and
rationalize to correct their human errors to prevent sinning. Puritan writings also had the didactic
writing where there's a purpose to the work. Poe takes these naturalistic human qualities and he
makes the poems, stories, and mysteries involving the characteristics that Puritans believed would
make them go to hell. While, Poe is an art–for–art writer because

Edgar Allan Poe born on January 19, 1809, was known as the creator of the modern detective story and innovator of the science fiction genre. Although, people identify him because of his horror stories as well as his haunting lyric poetry, there was a different side of him other than a gruesome, mysterious individual prowling in the shadows of moonlit cemeteries. Poe's childhood was very tragic and affected his adult life when growing up. Poe was the second son of actors David and Elizabeth Poe. Shortly after Poe was born, his father abandoned the family in 1810 and the following death of his twenty–four year old mother in 1811, left Poe an orphan at the young age of three. Poe was adopted by a guy named john, who was a strict unemotional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Poe aimed to create a different change in the magazine industry but failed to do so because of the unnecessary funding. Poe, most likely made his success in fame in January 1845. Poe became a household name; he had published his two books within that year and started his own magazine business. There were rumors about Poe with a different woman his wife health made leave the city and go back. Virginia died of tuberculosis ten years later. Poe dearly loved his wife and when she died he fell apart. When he wrote "The Raven", the character is grief over death of "Lenore" when a raven visits him. Raven is symbolic figure that is used in Poe poem to symbolize death. " Thy God hath lent thee–by these angels he hath sent thee Respite– and Nepenthe from the memories of Lenore!"(The Raven). Which, Lenore is the representation of Poe's deceased wife Virginia. Poe want to hang to his wife's memory because he just doesn't want to let go over her death. He was a lost soul and was devastate. Majority of the critics thought after the death of his wife, he would be done for good. The critics were right about Poe and he lived only about two more years in giving lectures and writing for his latest magazine, " The Stylus". • 2. The Father of Gothicism "I grew, day by day, more moody, more irritable, more regardless of the feelings of others. I suffered myself to use intemperate language to my wife. At length, I even offered her personal violence." This line comes from the story The Black Cat written by Edgar Allan Poe. Poe has been proclaimed the "Father of Gothicism" by many due to his grotesque short stories and poems. Gothic writers had their characters be more "prone to sin and self–destruction" than any other movement had experienced (Poets 2). This mysterious style of writing lasted until the 19th century, and other popular gothic writers and characters include Bram Stokers Dracula, and Mary Shelly's Frankenstein. Poe along with all gothic writers used disturbing, morbid words as well as supernatural story outlines to catch the reader's attention, as he was one of the first to introduce the harming of females to the literature world. Gothicism style of writing always keeps the reader shocked throughout the entire story trying to guess what's next. Edgar Poe was born in Boston to Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. on January 18, 1809 and experienced an extremely dark childhood. Poe unfortunately never got to build a relationship with his father because he abandoned the family by 1811. Poe's life changed dramatically after his mother's death on December 8, 1811 and his father's passing a few short days after by tuberculosis, which caused his family filled with two siblings to be split up into different homes. ... • 3. Similarities Between Edgar Allan Poe And Mark Twain Throughout the nineteenth century, numerous influential writers rose throughout the United States. Among them, Edgar Allan Poe and Mark Twain were two authors of famous works. They both shared a myriad of similarities and differences in life and literary style. With all things considered, the following will detail the relationship between Twain and Poe in their writings, time periods, and impact in American culture. When looking at both of these writers, their respective time periods and the geography of where they lived needs to be considered. Poe wrote during the early nineteenth century and spent most of his time in Northeastern America. On the other hand, Twain lived during the other half of the century in the Civil War in the South. As a result, Twain was largely affected by Southern customs and the battle against slavery, while Poe was largely unaffected by his living place, most of his writings "[reflecting on] his grief" and other macabre (biography.com authors). An example of their shaped works include: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by the former, and Tales of Grotesque and Arabesque by the latter. Nevertheless, despite influenced by different regions and times, both of the authors focused on human nature. Poe moreso on the depravity of man while Twain looked at class and inequality during his time, noted as "fond of unfortunate human beings" (Roberts). He addressed the famous poem "Annabel Lee" to her in 1849. In 1836, he received an editorship at The Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond. Around this time, Edgar began using drugs and dinking very heavily. He even showed up at events drunk. Still, he was writing incredible stories and poems. Poe received a large amount of recognition, not only for his poetry and fiction, but as an exceptional literary critic. He also achieved popular success, especially following the publication of his poem "The Raven." Edgar had fallen for Merrie next and she died of brain cancer. After a period in which he was involved in various romantic affairs, Poe planned to remarry, but in late September, 1849 he arrived in Baltimore for reasons unknown. • 7. Literary Analysis Of The Tell Tale Heart Among the many strange and complex short stories of Poe, "The Tell–Tale Heart" has come to be known as one of the most mysterious and psychologically intriguing. Poe's preoccupations with death, with madness, and with troubled human relationships all find their culmination in this brief narrative. The murder of the old man and its aftermath, which form the center of the story, are told with dazzling clarity, a clarity that itself obscures the meaning of the act and calls into question the emotional stability of the unnamed narrator. The subjectivism of this story, the confusion of the line between reader and character within the narrative, and the use of language support the claim that Poe prefigures and indeed develops many of the tropes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These two stories mark Poe's increasing interest in and ability to portray the psychologically gruesome and the supernatural, as well as his return to poetry. The sparse plot of "The Tell–Tale Heart" concerns the "murder aforethought" of an old man, who is never named nor described fully, by the narrator, who is also never identified. Its narration is clearly retrospective but otherwise unlocated; the circumstances of the confession of this crime are never described, and so it seems that the narrator is speaking directly and passionately to the reader. The sequence of events is simple enough: the narrator is disturbed by the eye of an old man; he complains that "one of his eyes resembled that of a vulture–a pale blue eye, with a film over it." The narrator decides to rid himself of this eye by killing the old man. This is accomplished after seven painstaking nights of creeping into the man's room in order to see if the offending eye is open. It is only on the eighth night that the old man opens his eyes, and the crime is committed. How the man is actually killed is not described in detail: the narrator merely ... Mark Canada of University of North Carolina at Pembroke cites critic Rodger Asselineau with the quote: If Roderick Usher, Egaeus, Metzengerstein, and even Dupin are all alike, if Ligeia, Morella, and Eleonora look like sisters, it is because, whether he consciously wanted to or not, he always takes the story of his own life as a starting point, a rather empty story on the whole since he had mostly lived in his dreams, imprisoned by his neuroses and obsessed by the image of his dead mother. (Canada) This expertly defines why all of Poe's themes were reoccurring. Another inspiration for Poe's themes was his fascination with psychology. Phrenology is known as the study of the idea that certain functions are controlled by differing parts of the brain. In order to explore this idea, Poe used themes such as self–destruction and madness in his poetry (Canada). Based on this premise, Mark Canada explains that he believes Poe to have had a "potent right cerebral hemisphere" which is believed to be the center of vivid imagery, music, emotions and "self–destructive urges;" Poe was consistently documented to have each of these traits. To start off, an allegory is an extended narrative which carries a second meaning along with its surface story, the people and/or events are symbolic. A few allegories are the abbey, the prince and the seven colour–coded rooms. As mentioned before, the prince and his guests use the abbey to isolate themselves from the Red Death. The abbey represents man's efforts to avoid death. However, regardless of wealth, social class, and power, death still arrives and again, proves to the readers that death is inevitable. Now in the abbey, Prospero arranges in a row from east to west, seven colour– coded rooms in the palace. The colours and their representations are blue (birth), purple (youth), green (adolescence), orange (adulthood), white (old age), violet (imminent death), and black/scarlet (death itself). All of the rooms is an allegory of the progression of human life. The prince arranged the rooms from east to west. East is associated with "beginnings" such as birth because the sun rises in the east, and west being the opposing direction of east. It is associated with endings such as death. Next, it can be said that Prince Prospero's name sort of sounds similar to the term prosperity. Prosperity means the state of being prosperous. From this, it can be concluded that he is noble, wealthy, powerful and respected. Also, he "was happy and dauntless and sagacious"(3). However though, he still ends up dying. He also wanted to write a 100 line poem, but ended up with 108 lines, which was good enough for Poe. The one and only novel Poe completed, Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, was about these crew members drawing straws for who would be eaten after their boat capsized; they drew straws, and ate Richard Parker. The book flopped. Even though Poe said it was a true story, almost all the critics didn't believe him. The narrator 's guilt consumes him once more, the reader may assume, once he says, "I hear all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell" (Poe, 716). The narrator 's guilty conscience causes him to hear and contemplate evil thoughts. This battle with his conscience, merges into one of Poe 's different thematic subjects, good vs. evil. Last but not least, Poe exhibits guilt after committing the crime. The narrator cannot handle what he has done. The officers in the story present an even larger obstacle because their presence sends the narrator into insanity. He says, "Villains! I shrieked, Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear upon the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!" (Poe, 718). The narrator cannot sustain his act of being a 'fearless ' person, for his guilt drove him into such madness that he felt that he had begun to hear the beating of what he had thought to be the old man 's heart, long after his gruesome murder (Kirkland, 13). Poe uses these examples to convey the message that guilt is sometimes too much of a burden on the human heart. In addition to Poe 's theme of guilt to deliver his message, he also uses symbols. • 39. Masque Of The Red Death Essay The Masque of the Red Death was published in May of 1842 by Edgar Allen Poe. It's clearly an allegorical story, one that can be more narrowly defined as a parable. A parable is defined by Encyclopedia Britannica as a fable–like story which uses humans instead of animals, and draws an analogy "between a particular instance of human behavior...and human behaviour at large". It's specifically designed to deliver a moral message or lesson, and the one in Masque is that no one can escape death, no matter what artifices are placed to obstruct it. This is interesting, but the real magnificence of the tale is in the literary genre in which Poe tells it, which is the Grotesque. The definition of this term in literature is a bit indistinct, but can be reduced to a couple of key characteristics: The Grotesque fits in between the real and the fantastic, while being simultaneously centered between funny and frightening (The Grotesque). While this is partially true because of the psychological aspects of the piece, it's not entirely accurate as a representation of the entire work. The creation of terror, the juxtaposition of the real and supernatural, the absurdity and almost comical aspects, all the poles of what we understand the grotesque to mean have been solidly touched upon in The Masque of the Red Death.
