Roman Propaganda Expressed Through Art
Unit 7 Essay
Mark Sprowls
AP art history The Roman rulers from ancient times are well–known for their ability to coax their people into thinking a certain way through the use of
convincing pieces of art. The Roman Empire was very troubled and its emperors are infamous for such things as lavish spending, unnecessary war,
and even the killing of family members, and this begs the question: how were there so few large scale revolts of the Roman populous? The answer is
the use of propaganda in popular Roman culture. The Roman Empire used propaganda for political purposes by incorporating Roman family values,
victorious war scenes, and general Roman successes into their artworks. Adding family values to art that depicted a Roman ruler's ... Show more content

On the Arch of Constantine a plethora of works depicting the triumphs of his predecessors can be seen, which he uses to his advantage, as if he
was proposing the idea that he was as great as the other emperors. In fact, he even goes as far to replace the heads of the other emperors on the arch
with his own like he was responsible for the many good deeds that they had done. One example of this is a relief where Hadrian is sacrificing an
animal to Apollo and then hunting boar, except Hadrian's face is replaced by Constantine's. This stealing of works was probably a way to gain favor
with the populous for himself as well as the next ruling emperor. All in all these two monuments to their respective patrons were highly effective
pieces of propaganda that may have been responsible for a less rebellious empire. To look back upon the propaganda used by the Roman Empire, it
seems particularly ingenious that they accomplished such a feat. To keep an empire with that many problems, problems that could undermine even the
greatest leaders, relatively stable is astonishing. In conclusion, through propaganda in art that depicted victorious war campaigns, successful emperors
and a halcyon family life the Rulers of ancient Rome were able to extend their respective time in power as well as increasing their already great

Summary Of Machete Season
Viewing the perpetrators of vile deeds as motivated merely by evil is a gross oversimplification. In the introduction, Jean Hatzfield states that the story
will follow the lives of the killers: the Hutu men who perpetrated the Rwandan genocide and murdered their Tutsi neighbors en masse. The narration
style switches between chapters written in third person omniscient style and chapters composed of many short sections of first person narratives from
the perspectives of the Hutu men interviewed by the author. The third person chapters provide context for the stories of the Hutus, while the numerous
stories themselves add a personal element that reveals the thoughts and mindsets of the Hutu's who participated in one of the largest and most... Show

By establishing humans as inherently capable of evil, and perpetrators of evil as no less human, Hatzfield encourages a nuanced understanding of
the causes of genocide. In doing so, Hatzfield warns readers of the ease with which genocide can take place and cautions against allowing
prejudice to take hold in communities. In Rwanda, Hutus lived with Tutsis as friends and neighbors mere days prior to slaughtering them.
However, the groundwork for the massacres "was the result of plans and preparations formulated essentially by collective decision" long before the
genocide began (52). Radio propaganda drove tensions far in advance, and the assassination of the Hutu president was not the reason for the
genocide but the signal for it to finally begin. Hatzfield establishes this point by humanizing the Hutus. One of the interviewees explains that when
"you receive a new order, you hesitate but you obey, or else you're taking a risk. When you have been prepared the right way by the radios and the
official advice, you obey more easily, even if the order is to kill your neighbors" (71). While this could easily be dismissed as an excuse born of fear
and guilt, understanding the truth of this statement is crucial to the prevention of further mass violence; indeed, if the preparation through propaganda
and conditioning can be identified,

Nazi Propaganda During Ww2
During WWII, there was a lot of propaganda that included the German's idea of a healthy life that was promoted as the best way to live. One photo,
from the 1936 Berlin Olympics depicts statues showing the ideal Germany body. Much of the other propaganda pieces include the Nazi's outlook on
smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Some of these pieces include a drawing of a man being "devoured" by a cigarette with the caption "He does
not devour it (the cigarette) it devours him", and another piece showing a woman holding her young child with the caption "Mothers avoid alcohol and
nicotine". Magazines and newspapers also sought to promote the NAZI ideals from quotes that say "Brother National Socialist, do you know that our

The perceived image of modern terrorism is different than the face of terror in the past, due to the increasing use of technology as a means for aiding

Media Imperialism: The Importance Of Media Imperialism
Abstract Media has become an important tool in every day's life as a means of communication owing to the spread of globalization. However
media imperialism is an issue of concern because it defines dimension of media freedoms hence impact. In this essay we are going to look into
media imperialism in terms of the effects it has to our social and cultural wellbeing. The results show that in deed media coverage is detrimental to
shaping opinions and ways people live and its crucial to use it effectively to gain desired positive advances. Monitoring of information relayed proves
vital since not all people are like minded. Concept and Introduction Media imperialism is currently taking great importance in most developing
countries' states. The theory suggests presence of dominance from the big nations making smaller economies lose track of their identities. Monopolies
of larger corporations swallow up the abilities of the small media groups. If incase the major source of information is an external producer it's
recommended then the dominant nation's cultures and interests to take over the home country. We find critiques arguing the way we find more media

Women were just beginning to break into new jobs and industries during World War II. In addition to women working in factories and on home
fronts 350,000 women also joined the armed forces. In May 1942 Congress began a new service branch called the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps
they also became Airforce Service Pilot's. Although women were getting various jobs in the workforce the aviation industry saw the largest
increase in female employees. In 1953 they made up 65% of the aviation industry workers in comparison to the 1% they made up prior to the war.
Women were changing their role they were taking steps to better themselves and they were spending less time relying on men.Propaganda like Rosie
the Riveter became one of the most successful recruitment tools it depicted the strength of women and represented the ability of the nation to pull
together in a tough time. Rosie brought to life the idea that this was everyone's fight everyone had to do their part in the war effort and the workforce

Role Of Propaganda In Animal Farm
Propaganda is some sort of information, especially of a biased or misleading nature used to promote a political cause or point of view (definition
from Oxford Dictionary). In other words, Propaganda is a false statement which is spread to help or harm a person or a group of people. Usually, It is
just a convenient lie to cover up something inferior. Propaganda is definitely something that is used a lot in the novel "Animal farm" by George Orwell.
However, how exactly is it used to control the animals on the farm?
In this novel, propaganda is always used to protect and glorify the dictator Napoleon as well as the dictatorial regime he establishes. Squealer, another
pig on the farm, is the main propagandist. He plays an important role in trying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Whenever an animal tries to defend Snowball, it is Squealer who explains why Snowball is fiendish. "He fought with bravely at the Battle of the

the time will come when we shall find that Snowball's part in it was much exaggerated.....Surely, comrades, you do not want Jones back?
In conclusion, In the novel "Animal farm", Propaganda is always used to control the animals on the farm in a very vile way. Propaganda is used by
Napoleon and Squealer. It is used to maintain a calm atmosphere in the farm, and so the animals will not revolt against Napoleon and his

The Book Thief By Marcus Zusak Essay
In the novel The Book Thief written by Marcus Zusak, Max found himself in a situation where the propaganda that Hitler has set affected his life in
many ways. With the help of Liesel's words and reading and the care that the Hubermanns gave, Max grew stronger and he had the courage to stand up
and protect himself from the force that Hitler had set against the him and the Jews. By having the his power of will, Max was fighting Hitler in his own
circumstances even if it 's just in his imagination.
"When a Jew shows up at your place of residence in the early hours of the morning, in the very birthplace of Nazismn, you're likely to experience
extreme levels of Discomfort, Anxiety, Disbelief and Paranoia.", The propaganda of Hitler was the most important aspect in the The Book Thief
because it often set the mood that I was feeling and that feeling was sick and cringing while reading the Novel. Before the war, The Nazi's passed
laws to effectively get rid of the Jews Human Rights and basically stripping and restricting them from being "human". Max, The "Jewish Fist Fighter",
was a victim of the Propaganda and his presence served and reminded me the vast superiority that the German's had against the Jews during the
Holocaust. This made me think so negatively on the Propaganda that was set against the Jews and completely disagreeing with the way Hitler was
seeing things because of the fact that for Max to be, "lucky", lucky meant that his home was the Hubermann's freezing basement

Why Is Augustus So Important In Res Gestae?
Augustus, formerly known as Octavian, was the adopted son of dictator Julius Caesar and Emperor or Rome. Octavian set out to destroy his father's
murderers and assembled his own army in his quest for power and retribution. At the start, he shared rule with Mark Antony, however, their
collaboration proved ineffective leading Augustus to pursue more and more control, culminating in the defeat of Antony in the battle of Actium and
assuming rule as Emperor of Rome. Augustus did not inherit rule, his pursuit for power comprised of manipulative actions veiled under his generosity,
concern for his people and charismatic tone and tenor. Res Gestae Divi Augusti expresses a sense of self adoration and honor in his quest for power
and control, yet the subtext portrays a vastly different undertone, that of use of cajoling and propagandizing messages to benefit his position and
accumulation of control of the republic. This Res Gestae is Augustus' mechanism of self–promotion and adoration for his exceptional leadership
qualities, concern and respect gleaned from his citizens and senate, and his military savvy to overpower and gain peace for the Romans, thus
proclaiming his reign as one of prestige and importance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tenor of his auto–biographical account is one of propaganda. Augustus, in truth maintained power for himself yet portrays his reasoning in Res

senate and Roman people" and "had no greater power than the others who were colleagues with me in each magistracy." He later proclaims he is
awarded by vote the moniker father of Rome. Clearly the tone is one of propaganda since it is his perception of reality, thus a biased account of the
actual methods in which he gained his title, Emperor of

Animal Farm Historical Perspectives
Animal Farm Through a Historical Perspective
Oftentimes, examining a piece of literature art can be troublesome– what insightful discovery is the author trying to reveal? Is there a deeper, more
profound truth to the on–the–surface details provided? Is there a truth at all? To New Historicists, the "truth" of a past or foreign culture can never be
confirmed as established or unchangeable. At best, any understanding of the "truth" is a matter of interpretation based on both the reader and the writer.
Additionally, while the literary work under consideration does indeed reflect the culture in which it was written, it also participates in the culture in
which it was written. In this complex level of historical perspective, culture and literature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At last, the author reveals his undeniable truth; the pigs, at first preaching for the well–being and empowerment of all animals, have mutated to the
very things the farm animals scorned–– tyrannical, overruling, and oppressive. But more profound to this truth, however, is not Orwell's application of
this to the history of the Soviet Union, but his application to mankind. By venturing into detail the malicious practices by the pigs, he offers an
alarming, but critical, nature of humanity. The book pictures its most poignant ironies in the instances in which Orwell portrays the corruption of
Animalist principles by those in power. For Animal Farm serves not so much to castigate dictatorship or tyranny as to accuse the appalling hypocrisy
of tyrannies that base themselves on, and owe their initial power to, ideologies of emancipation and impartiality. The universal truth in our world is
that one with absolute power, who rules in a dictatorship, cannot effectively manage and justify a successful nation. Without clear opposition, demand
for explanations of unjust actions will never be served to one to a political tyrant. Greed comes hand in hand with power, for the elite will have a
hunger that will never be fed. We human beings must venture deeper than our beliefs and emotions and focus on the larger picture at hand;

Anarchy: a theory that regards the absence of all direct or coercive government as a political ideal and that proposes the cooperative and voluntary

We are all given choices that are unquestionable, and one can choose to be great or fail miserably. In this game of life, anarchy relies on our ability to
cooperate with one another instead of being forced into institutions, which may be beneficial or not.
There are few people that will stand up for what they believe in, but most don't even know what they want or need. Currently, "Fifty percent of the
population is below average in intelligence"(Anarchy), states Charles Murray at a recent Libertarian convention. As people are becoming more
uneducated we are doing nothing to fix this. We still pay taxes and give politicians raises, without fixing healthcare, roads or the education system. This
problem could lead to hindering anarchism in the future as an alternative institutional system.
When talking of intelligence, Murray later states that there is a "В…relationship between social behavior and IQ." This is true and present in the
world today. The power–elite are ruling us, while the ignorant could do a "better" job, without abusing power. Yet, the uneducated choose weapons to

The War During The Cold War Essay
As the Second World War came to a close and American and Soviet forces marched into German territory, both states understood that shortly thereafter
their common foe would be defeated and their relationship very well could deteriorate. Even prior to the United States' entrance into the war, media
companies and state officials themselves spoke out against the "evils" of communism, though that rhetoric was put on hold as the Soviet Union and
America fought alongside one another against the Axis powers. As Rider points out, while "the U.S. propaganda apparatus was almost totally
dismantled" at the war's end, Truman still "wanted to ensure that 'other peoples receive[d] a full and fair picture of American life,'" which became the
basis for the substantial psychological war both the Soviets and Americans engaged in throughout the Cold War. While a considerable amount of
attention in historical academia has been given to the proxy wars, space race, and arms build–up both states took part in, parallel to said competitions
were those at the Olympics. Rider did an excellent job of exploring the role of sports, athletes, and particularly the media in the propagandist battle both
states waged, discussing the numerous individuals, various committees, and notable confrontations between the USSR and the USA in the realm of
sports. Propaganda had long been a tool that governments and private institutions alike used to promote images, either to paint themselves in a positive

citizens who believe and trust their leaders. Language is power, and the ability to use language and speech is the power needed to rule an empire.

Shakespeare thought about the important use of propaganda as a political weapon for many characters, most importantly Antony and Murellus. As
Caesar triumphs home from his defeat over Pompey, the audience can see Murellus clearly upset, stating, "Wherefore rejoice? What conquest brings
he home? | What tributaries follow him to Rome | To grace in captive bonds his chariot wheels? | You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless
things!" (I.i.32–35) The use of propaganda here is quite obvious, Murellus is upset that Caesar, in his mind, was unjust in taking the throne and
slandering him to the people. He also slanders the people of Rome, calling them worse than senseless beings to provoke either strong emotion or
fear within them. Power comes from language and speech here by evoking emotions inside and making your opponents vulnerable and weak.
That's what propaganda has always been used for. Shakespeare's deeper meaning in Julius Caesar is that everyone is weak and vulnerable, no
matter who or what you are. Everyone can have their emotions taken out by others, and speech is the tool and weapon to make opponents weak.
Antony resembles this idea of a powerful figure using propaganda and slander as his weapons further in the play when at Caesar's funeral. In front of
the many plebeians at Antony's funeral, who were in favor of Brutus at the time, Antony announced, "So are they all, all honorable men | Come I to
speak in Caesar's funeral. | He was my friend, faithful and just to me. | But Brutus says he was ambitious | And Brutus is an honorable man."
(III.ii.82–86) Antony is showing the people of Rome how Brutus was an honorable man, although he was ambitious to get the throne. A sob story is
what Antony is producing, showing the people he loved Caesar, but Brutus must be right for killing him, he is honorable.

for the army. During World War I propaganda was viewed by many high powered governmental officials as another form of warfare, which was
considered just as significant as the actual combat fighting during the time. The core focus of propaganda was to encourage the public and bring unity

John Merriman, focuses on a particular individual, Г‰mile Henry, and how his motives for becoming an anarchist turned him into the first modern

terrorism due to the kinds of people it attracts, mainly the poor. During the1850s–1900s anarchism was common because of poverty and political

The second bombing took place in February of 1894, less than two years later from his first. Henry was targeting the wealthy, fueled by extreme
hatred of what they had and that so many other people didn't. Henry wanted to throw the bomb into a crowd that would do the most damage, "he
counted on fifteen dead and twenty wounded at the very least" (Merriman 1). Henry aimed for the Opera but was underdressed and wouldn't be
able to make it past the guards, so he went to CafГ© de la Paix. Since there weren't enough people to kill in there, he decided to go to another,

Music as Propaganda in the German Reformation
Music as Propaganda in the German Reformation
The reformation was a religious and political movement that took place in the year 1517. This movement was spread by the Cristian humanist Martin
Luther, when he posted his "Ninety Five Theses". The reformation itself is one of those things everybody has heard about but no one quite understands,
even nowadays, 500 years after this movement occurred.
The main reason for this movement is unknown, however, some causes are being slowly known. First of all, as this movement occurred in the
renaissance, humanism was on the air and all the humanist ideas were being spread, so people were thinking more rationally, thus questioning the
church and its ways of working. Also, the printing press as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Martin Luther took advantage of this fact, since he knew that music was a good way of spreading his ideas because he knew that people would learn
them easily. He used the cantus firmus technique – which consists in borrowing someone else's melody and place it on the tenor, replacing its lyrics –
and replaced the lyrics to please his ideals. Since Luther knew that people already knew almost all the melodies, he took benefit of this fact by
making people remember only the lyrics, so he made them easy to learn. This music also may involve parody to the original piece of music. He also
translated a big amount of music into German so people could understand them. Thanks to this, songs way of also spreading news, because melodies

The Causes Of Propaganda During World War II
Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a political cause or point of view(Webster). It
has always been used to encourage the support of a cause especially during times of war. During World War II, the American government was
hesitant to use propaganda to encourage American support due to past experiences of propaganda during World War I. According to Lincoln
Riddle's article on War History Online, businesses and corporations had to persuade the government to use propaganda in America. The government
consented to the deed so long as the ads being displayed by business and corporation were only giving information on the war instead of withholding
information from the public (Riddle). Regardless, some posters and ads were overexaggerated for a war effort making them propaganda. The themes
could be divided into six main themes: "The Nature of the Enemy, The Nature of the Allies, The Need to Work, The Need to Fight, The Need to
Sacrifice, and The Americans–What we are fighting for" (Campbell). These forms used as propaganda ranged from posters, radio, and television.
Posters that were created during World War II helped to boost the home front's public moral and encourage soldiers to enlist in the war. Famous poster

What Does It Mean For A Monument As A Leader?
What does it mean to write on a monument as a leader? One answer to this question can be pursued by studying inscriptions on steles from the ancient
Near East and their relationships with their audiences. These monuments have all been constructed to communicate messages through both their
content and form, particularly in their imagery. Some would describe these steles as 'propaganda,' which has many negative connotations. However,
monumental inscriptions are much more complex than that. Propaganda is a control mechanism leaders use to spread ideologies and benefit
themselves. Though some monumental inscriptions have this intention, all were not created to control their audiences. Their meanings vary depending

The Tel Dan inscription was found at Tel Dan, Israel, in 1993–4 near the site's fortifications and dates approximately to the ninth or eighth centuries
BCE (Biran and Naveh 1995, 1). It is the oldest royal inscription written in an alphabetic script found in modern Israel (Na 'aman 2000, 93) and details
the exploits of Hazael, ruler of Aram, and is famous for naming King Ahaziah of Judah as a descendent of David. The Kilamuwa Stele was found
during German excavations of the site of ancient Sam'al in Northern Syria (Modern Turkey) in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The
stele was commissioned by King Kilamuwa, ruler of that city–state, and dates approximately to the ninth century BCE (Brown 2006, 339). The text
explains how Kilamuwa succeeded where his ancestors failed and the good he did for his people. The Mesha Stele was found at Dhiban, Jordan in
1868 and dates to the ninth century BCE ("Mesha Stele." 2014). It details the deeds of the Moabite king Mesha, particularly his fighting with Israel
and his building projects. These steles originated from different contexts in different sites, and each dates to about the same period and has its own
message and audience. The Tel Dan Stele (Figure 1) is fragmentary, consisting of 3 separate fragments with 13 lines of readable, Aramaic text. The
author is agreed by most scholars to be King Hazael of Damascus (Biran and Naveh 1995, 17)

Examples Of Propaganda In Rocky IV
Propaganda, and Its Relation to Epics In order to prove a point of empowerment and just propaganda, society creates medias depicting that of an epic
story, with the creator symbolising the victor or valiant hero. Rocky IV, a boxing movie with ties to propaganda of the Cold War between the US and
Russia, is a clear example of such. From the dramatic battles, to the hero's entourage, and foil characters Rocky may as well be summarized as an epic
movie. The effect of being an epic movie also had an alternative motive for the American producers with the underlying motive of good vs. evil, us vs.
them, Americans vs. Russians. The focus of any epic story is centered around the battles and conflicts the hero encounters. As such, Rocky encounters
many challenges. He struggles with the knowledge that he could have saved his friend from dying, he was challenged by a foe he didn't stand a
chance against, the people he loves didnВґt seem to support him, fighting what seemed like an entire country all while representing his own, and
having the disadvantage of size and capabilities between himself and his opponent were all pushed to the extreme. As such, many epics, if not all, are
all about the grandeur or exaggeration of their stories/plots. All situations are pushed to the extremes, everything bad is in turn excruciating, and good
is spectacular. Not only that but many epics have foil characters, characters that stand to oppose the hero, as was RockyВґs wife. Although in this case

Summary Of Empire Illusions
Out of the 7.5 billion people in this world the art of deception is used within every one of them. Any person can talk to you and you would have no
idea if they were lying. The majority of people believe it's okay to twist the truth a little and make up stories that will benefit you in the end and
make you look better. Author of Empire Illusions Chris Hedges argues on how in politics the major essential skill is artifice or a faux. How to be
acknowledged by voters and potentially get their vote all you need is a hoaxed narrative. Politics now a day is looked down upon because of the
constant deceiving they continue. Nobody wants to be lied to, especially by people who are leaders of the country they live in, making promises you
can't keep isn't the way to get votes. I don't stand by Hedges' argument because lying and manipulating citizens for a vote will only make them hate you
in the end.
Generally speaking, one use of artifice by the government is when promoting mass media, hitting people when they are at their utmost vulnerability,
like after a tragedy. Hedges' argument that artifice is the correct thing is presented as a harmful deed. If voters were to find out that propaganda was
involved in a debate, the elect would lose a lot of people on his/her side. Hedges states that Political leaders no longer need to be competent or
honest, they only need to appear as if they are. In addition, people want a leader who they know will make a difference and change our world for the
better. My dissent stays with this statement, lying is no way to manipulate voters who want and vote for a change that possibly won't happen. Saying
you will make a difference and actually doing it is what political leaders need to be liked. For example, Donald Trump may not be bringing change for
the better, like building the wall and construction is meant to start in roughly a year although he changes aren't beneficial they are taking place.
Propaganda posters have been around since the American Revolution and all they brought was fear and recurring war. For instance, Bernie Sanders
started his goal was to make college free, he knew people would go mad for something as expensive as college to be free, but in reality, people knew

ISIS Summary And Analysis
In June 2014, a new reign of terror was brought into power amid the political turmoil of the Middle East. The Islamic jihadist militant group ISIS (the
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria), also known as ISIL, Daesh, and IS, claims to have established a Caliphate, or religiously led absolute state ('ISIS
Rebels Declare...'). This group has gained notoriety for its brutality towards nonbelievers and those perceived to be western, utilizing social media and
the internet to publish brutal execution videos. How is it that such a group has managed to gain and keep members despite it's reputation for cruelty
and inhumanity? The answer lies in propaganda and indoctrination, as well as the highly sophisticated recruitment methods ISIS employs. ISIS's

Through these methods, ISIS recruiters are able to reach potential targets anywhere in the world. In Rukminki Callimachi's ВЁISIS and the Lonely

brainwashes her into identifying with the radical Islamic message. He encourages fellow members to befriend Alex, send her gifts, act as an
emotional support system for her, and even offering to find her a husband, all with the intent to make her more susceptible to his dogma (Callimachi).
These highly structured emotional manipulations are frequently used by ISIS in order to indoctrinate the easily influenced. These jihadists have
developed a guide for their recruiters, describing step by step how to identify potential candidates for brainwashing as well as how to get them to
subscribe to radical political and religious ideals (Warius). The guide includes a clear, step–by–step process that even the most inexperienced jihadi

Was Augustus Caesar A Good Leader?
Was Augustus Caesar a Good Leader?
To answer the question of whether or not Augustus was a good leader, his character and actions must be looked at over the sum of his life. The
leadership traits of respect, generosity, fairness, compassion, fearlessness, humility, sensitivity, and innovation appear in The Annals, Lives of the
Twelve Caesars, The Deeds of The DivineAugustus and the class textbook. Augustus demonstrated all of these attributes during his 51–year reign as
emperor from 63 BCE to 14 CE. However, he was not without fault as he also conducted himself in a less than worthy manner at times. Augustus was
not a perfect leader but he matured into a man who was respected and obeyed during life and is still studied almost 2000 years after his death.

The image of the statue, Augustus of Prima Porta, portrays Augustus as a strong military leader. His elaborate military uniform, including a very ornate

While Augustus, in both images, emanates leadership qualities like self–confidence, power and dominance, art can be misleading propaganda. It is

Analyzing Propaganda In World War I
Analyzing Propaganda Propaganda, a type of writing that makes you want to support people, causes, or things, has always been a form of
persuasion to lure people to a cause. Propaganda uses certain techniques to spark feelings or emotions that make you feel a certain way toward a
person, group, object, or cause. In World War One, or the Great War, propaganda was used to make people want to join the war, support the war by
bonds, or do little deeds to help the people working hard "out there." Propaganda was a useful tool used by the government and media when the Allies
and the Central Powers were using total war on each other when people started having second thoughts about the war. Two propaganda posters from the

The Lady Liberty is a fine example by showing a woman flying your country's flag, while shouting encouragement to join the war while praising
your country. That's an example of encouraging patriotism. The poster also implies that your support will be rewarded when your country beats

poster inspires pride at the fact that when you come back, you'll come home to a happy family just waiting to hear about your heroic efforts and
strifes. That's an example of a reward for your support. Even though propaganda sometimes gives out false information or leads you to believe
something false, it is a fantastic way to rouse up the feelings of the people and getting or fooling them to support the cause for the good of

Essay on The Danger of Subliminal Advertising
In modern society, advertisements and the media bombard Americans every single day. Television advertisements, movies, radio, and even Spam mail
have become a daily part of the lives of many citizens. However, most people do not realize the sinister methods advertisers and corporations employ
with the media in order to obtain a profit. The use of subliminal and negative advertising has increased immensely and shows no plan of stopping
anytime soon. This dangerous ploy manipulates the public and causes individuals to subconsciously crave a product or service. It is integral that
society understands the jeopardy of this malicious form of propaganda and begins to take a stand against it for the sake of citizens' privacy. Advertisers

Some groups, such as the California–based Center for Cognitive Liberty and Ethics (CCLE), believes that current advertising methods and
neuromarketing are methods to express thoughts ("Marketing's Mind Control"). In addition, Gemma Calvert, co–founder of Neurosense, a group
pioneering the use of MRI technology in market research, believe that neuromarketing simply improves upon advertising and poses no major threat
("Marketing's Mind Control"). But if these small changes are not monitored, the situation will escalate until media openly dictates the thoughts of
people. Consequently, the propaganda must be checked to prevent such a scenario. In some cases, controversial and invasive media can take the
form of what is considered art, such as a film or play (Sardar 4). Individuals will claim that the work is a form of free speech even if it contains
subliminal messaging. The government does not approve of subliminal messaging that takes place in such outlets, as the FTC Act Section Five

individuals responsible for the piece will deny that subliminal messages are present, making it more difficult for the government to prevent subliminal
messaging. Even if one is trying to make a point, he or she should

Europe was divided as two competing alliances, Central Powers (Britain, France, and Russia) and Triple Entente (Germany, Austro–Hungary, and Italy).
On June 28, 1914, the two alliances started breaking apart. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of the Austro–Hungarian Empire, and his
wife, Sophie, were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist while visiting Sarajevo. Austria declared war on Serbia as a result. This led to Russia

Emotion through Visual War Propaganda Even though the artist always strives to convey a certain emotion through his art, the beholder does not
always feel what the artist intended them to feel. Most of the time, visual art is seen as either truly in depth or quite ridiculous, it all depends on the
viewer when deciding what side of the spectrum they reside in. This argument is more prominent in today's culture than it ever was before, with the
emergence of modern art, people are beginning to feel that they would be able to create most of the art being sold for high biddings without a

Augustus- Absolute Power By Any Means Necessary
With the death of Julius Caesar, Augustus became the leader of Julius' great conquests, resources, and soldiers. Immense power was his to seize.
However, the power came at a cost. At the forefront of his attention, Julius' killers were still loose, sewing seeds of violent oppression to this authority.
Combined with this constant fear of revolt, the propaganda of Marc Antony and others further challenged his right to rule. Therefore, for Augustus to
command the absolute power bestowed upon him, he must eliminate any threats by any means necessary. This took the form of massacre. The
justification for Augusts' campaign against any threat came from propaganda spread against him and its potential to undermine his rule. One of the
primary methods of belittlement came in the form of slander against his family name. No individual utilized this tactic more cunningly than Marc
Antony. The first rumors targeted the social position of his ancestors. Antony claimed Augustus' paternal great
–grandfather was only a freeman and his
grandfather "a money–changer." On the maternal side, Antony publically spread Augusts' maternal great–grandfather was a baker from Africa. Even
though Suetonius dismisses the Antony's rumor of money changing, many Romans followed Antony's strategy of humiliation (including Cassius
Parmensis). By undermining his family ties, Antony could unsettle the legitimacy behind his rule. Since social position determined the cursus

Animal Farm Quote Analysis
George Orwell's Animal Farm is an interesting story based on the origin of communism. This book often focuses on the actions of the pigs, who
represent the leaders, propaganda, and other important entities during communism's birth. The pigs perform several morally questionable actions, a
large portion of which can simplify down to a single phrase: dressing lies up in the clothing of truth. One example of lies hiding as truths is the
numerous times leaders break and repaint the Commandments. The Commandments are a set of rules painted on the wall of a barn that the animals in
the story live by. One quote demonstrating this is "Muriel read the Commandment for her. It ran: "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause"
Somehow or the other, the last two words slipped out of the animal's memory. But they saw now that the Commandment had not been violated" (Orwell
43). These alterations of the Commandments let Napoleon, the main leader of the animals, lie about the animals' intended living conditions. Changing

Roman Pada And Trageda In Virgil's The Aeneid
Emperor Caesar Augustus commissioned the Roman poet Virgil to create a Roman epic: The Aeneid (Leeming). The epic was written in mind for a
target audience of young educated elite Romans. Virgil seamlessly ties together Aeneas and the founding of Rome with Augustus and the rise of the
Roman Empire. Through this connection, Virgil writes The Aeneid as propaganda to please the emperorAugustus by depicting Aeneas founding of
Rome as a heroic journey. However, Virgil also criticizes Augustus's rule through the character Aeneas and his struggle to balance mercy and justice.
Virgil turns The Aeneid into propaganda through depicting Aeneas, and consequently Augustus, as a heroic figure. Son of the goddess Venus,
Aeneas is described to physically resemble a god when he appears in front of Dido: "Princely Aeneas stood and shone in the brightlight, head and
shoulders noble as a god's" (Virgil 24). Intentionally highlighting the hero's attractive features and resemblance to a god in turn creates a positive
portrayal of Caesar Augustus through association. In addition, Aeneas bears the hero's call to adventure. Bound by various prophecies and
predictions, Aeneas needs to carry out his divine obligation to found Rome. When Aeneas leaves the island of Carthage and Queen Dido, his lover,
he claims that "Apollo tells me I must make for: Italy, named by his oracles. There is my love; there is my country" (Virgil 108). Romanticizing the
notion of following a higher calling to establish

the men engaged in a duel of words in deeds. This paper will first overview the formation and disintegration of Second Triumvirate between Marc

Government Controls In Australia During World War Two
Government controls had a major impact on the change of Australian life and society during World War Two. It was necessary for the government to
establish new controls in Australia during the Second World War in order to control the information being distributed to the public, protect Australian
citizens and maintain peace within Australian society. The first example ofgovernment control in Australia is censorship. During World War Two, the
government controlled the information that was made public to the media. This was often to stop information being leaked to the enemy and promote
enthusiasm for the war. Censorship often involved suppressing information to avoid panic and discontent in Australian society. For example, the

Over 900 000 men left for war which meant women had to take on their roles in order to keep the country going, this was a major change as
women usually only stayed at home and never had the opportunity to work. The first example of women's changing role in society was women
enlisting in the armed forces. In 1941, the government created three women's services: the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force, the Australian
Women's Army Service and the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service. This was seen as a way to further deal with the challenges of war as
women could take on roles previously occupied by men, such as electricians, aircraft mechanics, clerical assistants, caterers, signallers and more.
Women were also able to serve in army hospitals in both Australia and other countries that Australia had fought in. Another example of women's
changing role in society during World War Two was the formation of the Australian Women's Land Army. Due to the labour shortage in rural areas,
in 1942 the Women's Land Army was established by the government. Over 2000 women joined and they were paid to live and work on farms in
isolated areas. Their work included operating farm machinery, growing fruits and vegetables, milking cows, raising pigs and poultry and harvesting
crops. The army was promoted as "a vital war job" and helped deal with the labour shortages in Australia at the time. This was a major change in
Australian life and society during World War Two as it was ultimately women's entry into workforce and new way of living. It meant that women were

Roman Propaganda Expressed Through Art

  • 1. Roman Propaganda Expressed Through Art Unit 7 Essay Mark Sprowls AP art history The Roman rulers from ancient times are well–known for their ability to coax their people into thinking a certain way through the use of convincing pieces of art. The Roman Empire was very troubled and its emperors are infamous for such things as lavish spending, unnecessary war, and even the killing of family members, and this begs the question: how were there so few large scale revolts of the Roman populous? The answer is the use of propaganda in popular Roman culture. The Roman Empire used propaganda for political purposes by incorporating Roman family values, victorious war scenes, and general Roman successes into their artworks. Adding family values to art that depicted a Roman ruler's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the Arch of Constantine a plethora of works depicting the triumphs of his predecessors can be seen, which he uses to his advantage, as if he was proposing the idea that he was as great as the other emperors. In fact, he even goes as far to replace the heads of the other emperors on the arch with his own like he was responsible for the many good deeds that they had done. One example of this is a relief where Hadrian is sacrificing an animal to Apollo and then hunting boar, except Hadrian's face is replaced by Constantine's. This stealing of works was probably a way to gain favor with the populous for himself as well as the next ruling emperor. All in all these two monuments to their respective patrons were highly effective pieces of propaganda that may have been responsible for a less rebellious empire. To look back upon the propaganda used by the Roman Empire, it seems particularly ingenious that they accomplished such a feat. To keep an empire with that many problems, problems that could undermine even the greatest leaders, relatively stable is astonishing. In conclusion, through propaganda in art that depicted victorious war campaigns, successful emperors and a halcyon family life the Rulers of ancient Rome were able to extend their respective time in power as well as increasing their already great ... • 2. Summary Of Machete Season Viewing the perpetrators of vile deeds as motivated merely by evil is a gross oversimplification. In the introduction, Jean Hatzfield states that the story will follow the lives of the killers: the Hutu men who perpetrated the Rwandan genocide and murdered their Tutsi neighbors en masse. The narration style switches between chapters written in third person omniscient style and chapters composed of many short sections of first person narratives from the perspectives of the Hutu men interviewed by the author. The third person chapters provide context for the stories of the Hutus, while the numerous stories themselves add a personal element that reveals the thoughts and mindsets of the Hutu's who participated in one of the largest and most... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By establishing humans as inherently capable of evil, and perpetrators of evil as no less human, Hatzfield encourages a nuanced understanding of the causes of genocide. In doing so, Hatzfield warns readers of the ease with which genocide can take place and cautions against allowing prejudice to take hold in communities. In Rwanda, Hutus lived with Tutsis as friends and neighbors mere days prior to slaughtering them. However, the groundwork for the massacres "was the result of plans and preparations formulated essentially by collective decision" long before the genocide began (52). Radio propaganda drove tensions far in advance, and the assassination of the Hutu president was not the reason for the genocide but the signal for it to finally begin. Hatzfield establishes this point by humanizing the Hutus. One of the interviewees explains that when "you receive a new order, you hesitate but you obey, or else you're taking a risk. When you have been prepared the right way by the radios and the official advice, you obey more easily, even if the order is to kill your neighbors" (71). While this could easily be dismissed as an excuse born of fear and guilt, understanding the truth of this statement is crucial to the prevention of further mass violence; indeed, if the preparation through propaganda and conditioning can be identified, ... One photo, from the 1936 Berlin Olympics depicts statues showing the ideal Germany body. Much of the other propaganda pieces include the Nazi's outlook on smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. Some of these pieces include a drawing of a man being "devoured" by a cigarette with the caption "He does not devour it (the cigarette) it devours him", and another piece showing a woman holding her young child with the caption "Mothers avoid alcohol and nicotine". The perceived image of modern terrorism is different than the face of terror in the past, due to the increasing use of technology as a means for aiding extremists and terrorist activities. This paper will argue that modern tactics require different approaches from what has been done in the past to fight terrorism, and explore this difference between this past and present technological recruitment phenomenon. Monitoring of information relayed proves vital since not all people are like minded. In other words, Propaganda is a false statement which is spread to help or harm a person or a group of people. Usually, It is just a convenient lie to cover up something inferior. Propaganda is definitely something that is used a lot in the novel "Animal farm" by George Orwell. However, how exactly is it used to control the animals on the farm? • 8. The Book Thief By Marcus Zusak Essay In the novel The Book Thief written by Marcus Zusak, Max found himself in a situation where the propaganda that Hitler has set affected his life in many ways. With the help of Liesel's words and reading and the care that the Hubermanns gave, Max grew stronger and he had the courage to stand up and protect himself from the force that Hitler had set against the him and the Jews. By having the his power of will, Max was fighting Hitler in his own circumstances even if it 's just in his imagination. "When a Jew shows up at your place of residence in the early hours of the morning, in the very birthplace of Nazismn, you're likely to experience extreme levels of Discomfort, Anxiety, Disbelief and Paranoia.", The propaganda of Hitler was the most important aspect in the The Book Thief because it often set the mood that I was feeling and that feeling was sick and cringing while reading the Novel. Before the war, The Nazi's passed laws to effectively get rid of the Jews Human Rights and basically stripping and restricting them from being "human". Max, The "Jewish Fist Fighter", was a victim of the Propaganda and his presence served and reminded me the vast superiority that the German's had against the Jews during the Holocaust. This made me think so negatively on the Propaganda that was set against the Jews and completely disagreeing with the way Hitler was seeing things because of the fact that for Max to be, "lucky", lucky meant that his home was the Hubermann's freezing basement ... • 10. Why Is Augustus So Important In Res Gestae? Augustus, formerly known as Octavian, was the adopted son of dictator Julius Caesar and Emperor or Rome. Octavian set out to destroy his father's murderers and assembled his own army in his quest for power and retribution. At the start, he shared rule with Mark Antony, however, their collaboration proved ineffective leading Augustus to pursue more and more control, culminating in the defeat of Antony in the battle of Actium and assuming rule as Emperor of Rome. Augustus did not inherit rule, his pursuit for power comprised of manipulative actions veiled under his generosity, concern for his people and charismatic tone and tenor. Res Gestae Divi Augusti expresses a sense of self adoration and honor in his quest for power and control, yet the subtext portrays a vastly different undertone, that of use of cajoling and propagandizing messages to benefit his position and accumulation of control of the republic. This Res Gestae is Augustus' mechanism of self–promotion and adoration for his exceptional leadership qualities, concern and respect gleaned from his citizens and senate, and his military savvy to overpower and gain peace for the Romans, thus proclaiming his reign as one of prestige and importance. ... Animal Farm Historical Perspectives Animal Farm Through a Historical Perspective Oftentimes, examining a piece of literature art can be troublesome– what insightful discovery is the author trying to reveal? Is there a deeper, more profound truth to the on–the–surface details provided? Is there a truth at all? To New Historicists, the "truth" of a past or foreign culture can never be confirmed as established or unchangeable. At best, any understanding of the "truth" is a matter of interpretation based on both the reader and the writer. Additionally, while the literary work under consideration does indeed reflect the culture in which it was written, it also participates in the culture in which it was written. In this complex level of historical perspective, culture and literature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At last, the author reveals his undeniable truth; the pigs, at first preaching for the well–being and empowerment of all animals, have mutated to the very things the farm animals scorned–– tyrannical, overruling, and oppressive. But more profound to this truth, however, is not Orwell's application of this to the history of the Soviet Union, but his application to mankind. By venturing into detail the malicious practices by the pigs, he offers an alarming, but critical, nature of humanity. The book pictures its most poignant ironies in the instances in which Orwell portrays the corruption of Animalist principles by those in power. For Animal Farm serves not so much to castigate dictatorship or tyranny as to accuse the appalling hypocrisy of tyrannies that base themselves on, and owe their initial power to, ideologies of emancipation and impartiality. The universal truth in our world is that one with absolute power, who rules in a dictatorship, cannot effectively manage and justify a successful nation. Without clear opposition, demand for explanations of unjust actions will never be served to one to a political tyrant. Greed comes hand in hand with power, for the elite will have a hunger that will never be fed. • 12. Can Anarchy Work? Essay Can Anarchy Work? Anarchy: a theory that regards the absence of all direct or coercive government as a political ideal and that proposes the cooperative and voluntary association of individuals and groups as the principal mode of organized society (Dictionary). The question I pose is, will and can anarchy ever work in our world? Dreams of a utopia linger under our breath, as if they were dirty secrets waiting to be told. A dream that people can live cooperatively with a less coercive government. While this seems impossible now, anarchy could benefit our earth and the citizens living here. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are all given choices that are unquestionable, and one can choose to be great or fail miserably. In this game of life, anarchy relies on our ability to cooperate with one another instead of being forced into institutions, which may be beneficial or not. There are few people that will stand up for what they believe in, but most don't even know what they want or need. Currently, "Fifty percent of the population is below average in intelligence"(Anarchy), states Charles Murray at a recent Libertarian convention. As people are becoming more uneducated we are doing nothing to fix this. We still pay taxes and give politicians raises, without fixing healthcare, roads or the education system. • 13. The War During The Cold War Essay As the Second World War came to a close and American and Soviet forces marched into German territory, both states understood that shortly thereafter their common foe would be defeated and their relationship very well could deteriorate. Even prior to the United States' entrance into the war, media companies and state officials themselves spoke out against the "evils" of communism, though that rhetoric was put on hold as the Soviet Union and America fought alongside one another against the Axis powers. As Rider points out, while "the U.S. propaganda apparatus was almost totally dismantled" at the war's end, Truman still "wanted to ensure that 'other peoples receive[d] a full and fair picture of American life,'" which became the basis for the substantial psychological war both the Soviets and Americans engaged in throughout the Cold War. While a considerable amount of attention in historical academia has been given to the proxy wars, space race, and arms build–up both states took part in, parallel to said competitions were those at the Olympics. Rider did an excellent job of exploring the role of sports, athletes, and particularly the media in the propagandist battle both states waged, discussing the numerous individuals, various committees, and notable confrontations between the USSR and the USA in the realm of sports. No one can doubt that. In a time of turmoil, hatred, fear, and hope, these speakers have come forth to create produce reverence in their foes. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare, is a fantastic example of the power of language and speech in front of the citizens who believe and trust their leaders. Although sometimes used for hate, language and speech, especially in Julius Caesar, is a potent tool and weapon used to fight for beliefs and ideas, to spread propaganda, and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Shakespeare thought about the important use of propaganda as a political weapon for many characters, most importantly Antony and Murellus. As Caesar triumphs home from his defeat over Pompey, the audience can see Murellus clearly upset, stating, "Wherefore rejoice? What conquest brings he home? | What tributaries follow him to Rome | To grace in captive bonds his chariot wheels? | You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things!" (I.i.32–35) The use of propaganda here is quite obvious, Murellus is upset that Caesar, in his mind, was unjust in taking the throne and slandering him to the people. He also slanders the people of Rome, calling them worse than senseless beings to provoke either strong emotion or fear within them. Power comes from language and speech here by evoking emotions inside and making your opponents vulnerable and weak. That's what propaganda has always been used for. Shakespeare's deeper meaning in Julius Caesar is that everyone is weak and vulnerable, no matter who or what you are. Everyone can have their emotions taken out by others, and speech is the tool and weapon to make opponents weak. Antony resembles this idea of a powerful figure using propaganda and slander as his weapons further in the play when at Caesar's funeral. In front of the many plebeians at Antony's funeral, who were in favor of Brutus at the time, Antony announced, "So are they all, all honorable men | Come I to speak in Caesar's funeral. | He was my friend, faithful and just to me. | But Brutus says he was ambitious | And Brutus is an honorable man." (III.ii.82–86) Antony is showing the people of Rome how Brutus was an honorable man, although he was ambitious to get the throne. A sob story is what Antony is producing, showing the people he loved Caesar, but Brutus must be right for killing him, he is honorable. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. The Causes Of Propaganda During World War II Propaganda is information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a political cause or point of view(Webster). It has always been used to encourage the support of a cause especially during times of war. During World War II, the American government was hesitant to use propaganda to encourage American support due to past experiences of propaganda during World War I. According to Lincoln Riddle's article on War History Online, businesses and corporations had to persuade the government to use propaganda in America. The government consented to the deed so long as the ads being displayed by business and corporation were only giving information on the war instead of withholding information from the public (Riddle). Regardless, some posters and ads were overexaggerated for a war effort making them propaganda. The themes could be divided into six main themes: "The Nature of the Enemy, The Nature of the Allies, The Need to Work, The Need to Fight, The Need to Sacrifice, and The Americans–What we are fighting for" (Campbell). These forms used as propaganda ranged from posters, radio, and television. Posters that were created during World War II helped to boost the home front's public moral and encourage soldiers to enlist in the war. One answer to this question can be pursued by studying inscriptions on steles from the ancient Near East and their relationships with their audiences. Some would describe these steles as 'propaganda,' which has many negative connotations. However, monumental inscriptions are much more complex than that. • 22. Examples Of Propaganda In Rocky IV Propaganda, and Its Relation to Epics In order to prove a point of empowerment and just propaganda, society creates medias depicting that of an epic story, with the creator symbolising the victor or valiant hero. Rocky IV, a boxing movie with ties to propaganda of the Cold War between the US and Russia, is a clear example of such. From the dramatic battles, to the hero's entourage, and foil characters Rocky may as well be summarized as an epic movie. The effect of being an epic movie also had an alternative motive for the American producers with the underlying motive of good vs. evil, us vs. them, Americans vs. Russians. The focus of any epic story is centered around the battles and conflicts the hero encounters. As such, Rocky encounters many challenges. He struggles with the knowledge that he could have saved his friend from dying, he was challenged by a foe he didn't stand a chance against, the people he loves didnВґt seem to support him, fighting what seemed like an entire country all while representing his own, and having the disadvantage of size and capabilities between himself and his opponent were all pushed to the extreme. As such, many epics, if not all, are all about the grandeur or exaggeration of their stories/plots. All situations are pushed to the extremes, everything bad is in turn excruciating, and good is spectacular. Not only that but many epics have foil characters, characters that stand to oppose the hero, as was RockyВґs wife. Although in this case ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. Summary Of Empire Illusions Out of the 7.5 billion people in this world the art of deception is used within every one of them. Any person can talk to you and you would have no idea if they were lying. The majority of people believe it's okay to twist the truth a little and make up stories that will benefit you in the end and make you look better. Author of Empire Illusions Chris Hedges argues on how in politics the major essential skill is artifice or a faux. How to be acknowledged by voters and potentially get their vote all you need is a hoaxed narrative. Politics now a day is looked down upon because of the constant deceiving they continue. Nobody wants to be lied to, especially by people who are leaders of the country they live in, making promises you can't keep isn't the way to get votes. I don't stand by Hedges' argument because lying and manipulating citizens for a vote will only make them hate you in the end. Generally speaking, one use of artifice by the government is when promoting mass media, hitting people when they are at their utmost vulnerability, like after a tragedy. Hedges' argument that artifice is the correct thing is presented as a harmful deed. If voters were to find out that propaganda was involved in a debate, the elect would lose a lot of people on his/her side. Hedges states that Political leaders no longer need to be competent or honest, they only need to appear as if they are. In addition, people want a leader who they know will make a difference and change our world for the better. My dissent stays with this statement, lying is no way to manipulate voters who want and vote for a change that possibly won't happen. Saying you will make a difference and actually doing it is what political leaders need to be liked. For example, Donald Trump may not be bringing change for the better, like building the wall and construction is meant to start in roughly a year although he changes aren't beneficial they are taking place. Propaganda posters have been around since the American Revolution and all they brought was fear and recurring war. • 32. Augustus- Absolute Power By Any Means Necessary With the death of Julius Caesar, Augustus became the leader of Julius' great conquests, resources, and soldiers. Immense power was his to seize. However, the power came at a cost. At the forefront of his attention, Julius' killers were still loose, sewing seeds of violent oppression to this authority. Combined with this constant fear of revolt, the propaganda of Marc Antony and others further challenged his right to rule. Therefore, for Augustus to command the absolute power bestowed upon him, he must eliminate any threats by any means necessary. This took the form of massacre. The justification for Augusts' campaign against any threat came from propaganda spread against him and its potential to undermine his rule. One of the primary methods of belittlement came in the form of slander against his family name. No individual utilized this tactic more cunningly than Marc Antony. The first rumors targeted the social position of his ancestors. Antony claimed Augustus' paternal great –grandfather was only a freeman and his grandfather "a money–changer." On the maternal side, Antony publically spread Augusts' maternal great–grandfather was a baker from Africa. Even though Suetonius dismisses the Antony's rumor of money changing, many Romans followed Antony's strategy of humiliation (including Cassius Parmensis). By undermining his family ties, Antony could unsettle the legitimacy behind his rule. Since social position determined the cursus honorum, a successful tarnish could ... • 33. Animal Farm Quote Analysis George Orwell's Animal Farm is an interesting story based on the origin of communism. This book often focuses on the actions of the pigs, who represent the leaders, propaganda, and other important entities during communism's birth. The pigs perform several morally questionable actions, a large portion of which can simplify down to a single phrase: dressing lies up in the clothing of truth. One example of lies hiding as truths is the numerous times leaders break and repaint the Commandments. The Commandments are a set of rules painted on the wall of a barn that the animals in the story live by. One quote demonstrating this is "Muriel read the Commandment for her. It ran: "No animal shall kill any other animal without cause" Somehow or the other, the last two words slipped out of the animal's memory. But they saw now that the Commandment had not been violated" (Orwell 43). These alterations of the Commandments let Napoleon, the main leader of the animals, lie about the animals' intended living conditions. Changing the rules of everyday life isn't the only deed the pigs perform.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This strategy works, allowing Napoleon to lie his way into total leadership. The innocent fighter isn't the only one who Napoleon throws under the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Roman Pada And Trageda In Virgil's The Aeneid Emperor Caesar Augustus commissioned the Roman poet Virgil to create a Roman epic: The Aeneid (Leeming). The epic was written in mind for a target audience of young educated elite Romans. Virgil seamlessly ties together Aeneas and the founding of Rome with Augustus and the rise of the Roman Empire. Through this connection, Virgil writes The Aeneid as propaganda to please the emperorAugustus by depicting Aeneas founding of Rome as a heroic journey. However, Virgil also criticizes Augustus's rule through the character Aeneas and his struggle to balance mercy and justice. Virgil turns The Aeneid into propaganda through depicting Aeneas, and consequently Augustus, as a heroic figure. Son of the goddess Venus, Aeneas is described to physically resemble a god when he appears in front of Dido: "Princely Aeneas stood and shone in the brightlight, head and shoulders noble as a god's" (Virgil 24). Intentionally highlighting the hero's attractive features and resemblance to a god in turn creates a positive portrayal of Caesar Augustus through association. In addition, Aeneas bears the hero's call to adventure. Bound by various prophecies and predictions, Aeneas needs to carry out his divine obligation to found Rome. When Aeneas leaves the island of Carthage and Queen Dido, his lover, he claims that "Apollo tells me I must make for: Italy, named by his oracles. There is my love; there is my country" (Virgil 108). Over 900 000 men left for war which meant women had to take on their roles in order to keep the country going, this was a major change as women usually only stayed at home and never had the opportunity to work. The first example of women's changing role in society was women enlisting in the armed forces. In 1941, the government created three women's services: the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force, the Australian Women's Army Service and the Women's Royal Australian Naval Service. This was seen as a way to further deal with the challenges of war as women could take on roles previously occupied by men, such as electricians, aircraft mechanics, clerical assistants, caterers, signallers and more. Women were also able to serve in army hospitals in both Australia and other countries that Australia had fought in. Another example of women's changing role in society during World War Two was the formation of the Australian Women's Land Army. Due to the labour shortage in rural areas, in 1942 the Women's Land Army was established by the government. Over 2000 women joined and they were paid to live and work on farms in isolated areas. Their work included operating farm machinery, growing fruits and vegetables, milking cows, raising pigs and poultry and harvesting crops. The army was promoted as "a vital war job" and helped deal with the labour shortages in Australia at the time. This was a major change in Australian life and society during World War Two as it was ultimately women's entry into workforce and new way of living.
