Thisroutewas trieduntil1950when Chinatookcontrol
ofTibetandcloseditsborders.
WhenNepalopeneditsborderin1949,climbersbeganusing
thesoutheastridge.OnMay29,1953,Everestwasfinally
con quered by EdmundHillaryofNewZealandandTenzing
Norgay,hisSherpaguide, using this route.
