When the story begins we are introduced to Marji, she
is a ten year old girl in Iran. She speaks of how things
in her home country changed following the revolution.
5. Gutter: Consider the first two panels of the graphic novel. What is the effect of
using the gutter to separate/connect the narrator with her classmates? Why
might Sartrapi have opened the story this way?
Panel Transitions: Consider the final page of the first section. Sartrapi crafts the
panels on this page to transition from the physical to the spiritual to the
conceptual. How does she use both the panels themselves and images to achieve
this?
Character Abstraction: The characters in the graphic novel are cartooned
abstractions of realistic people. We see that in every pane. What is the initial
effect on you, the reader/viewer, here? Why might Sartrapi choose to use
‘simplified’ cartoon representations rather than more ‘realistic’ images?
