Que-1. Write the contribution of Lech Walesa in establishing democracy
in Poland?
Ans-1. The workers of Lenin shipyards in the city of Gdansk went on
strike on 14 august 1980. Lech Walesa was an electrician and one of the
workers at the shipyard. He joined the strike and under his leadership,
the strike turned into a movement and then into a party named as
Solidarity. When the government gave into the pressures of the party to
organize elections, the party won by majority votes and Lech, Walesa,
being the leader of the party, became the President.
Que-2. How did Michele Bachelet become the president of Chile?
Ans-2. In March of 2006, after winning widespread support in elections the
previous year, Bachelet became The first female President of the Republic,
marking the beginning of a period where the government focused on achieving
greater equality and social inclusion in Chile. She was the girl who was
imprisoned and tortured along with her mother. She also defeated the richest
man in Chile during elections.
Que-3. Write about the rule of Pinochet before the referendum?
Ans-3. Pinochet became the President of the country and ruled it for the
next 17 years. From a government that was elected by the people, the
power shifted to the military officers. They could do as they wished and
no one could question them. Thus a military dictatorship was established
in Chile. Pinochet’s government tortured and killed several of those who
supported Allende and those who wanted democracy to be restored. He
decided to hold a referendum in 1988. Because of this referendum
people’s vote was a decisive ‘no’ to his continuation in power.
