The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Juniot Diaz
In the novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Juniot Diaz you start to notice a cultural
gender role and how there is certain expectations of them. The novel is based on a young boy named
Oscar Wao and the hardships that one event has caused to an entire family. Even though the novel is
focused on Oscar the author always went back to his sister and his mother. The author described the
women as "real, strong women, even though they were being filtered through a somewhat distorted
male point of view" (Stevenson 1). These two women play an important roll in this novel, they
ultimately don't show the cultural gender role and what is expected from them. All the important
female rolls in Oscars life are independent and strong women but they all have one thing in
common, being mistreated by men. "Women's history led to the historical study of gender. Gender
includes the behavior, manners, morals, speech, and emotions expected of men and women because
of their sex. Historians of gender have analyzed many characteristics of "masculine" and "feminine"
behavior in relation to social stereotypes and economic power. The historians' studies have provided
a means to understand a wide range of social behavior–from attitudes about sex to economic
inequality–in terms of social conventions of gender" (Partner 1). This is a common factor in the
novel "The Brief Life of Oscar Wao" by Diaz, he shows how the Dominican culture views their
women and how they aren't always respected.

Response to the Three Stages of Cultural 'Defiance' Essay
Response to the Three Stages of Cultural "Defiance" As I read through the three stages that a person
takes as they transition through cultural "defiance", I couldn't help to think about my own
experience with this. I have traveled through 39 countries, and lived in a total of four different
countries. I currently live in Casablanca, Morocco, and I have lived in both Brazil and the
Dominican Republic. Of course, I was born and raised in the United States. My parents were both
born in the United States, but my mother's ethnic background is Danish and German, and my
father's ethnic background is Lebanese. His parents both immigrated to the United States from
Lebanon. My father's parents were Muslim, but after they died, my father ... Show more content on

I felt comfortable there. I liked Brazil second, but didn't like the city I lived in. Morocco has
definitely been the most difficult for me, and I haven't learned to love it, not even like it so much. I
more just tolerate it. However, Morocco is also very different from the United States, and doesn't
have many comforts that Americans are used too. I am sure that is a big reason that I find it a very
difficult place to live. I am sure that is why I experience the most "culture shock" here. I say this to
say that my own stage of cultural "defiance" has been a mixture of all three. I believe that the
Dominican Republic was my example of stage three, followed by Brazil being the essence of stage
one, and finally Morocco has definitely been an example of stage two.
STAGE ONE: Denial of Differences (or the Invisible People) All three countries that I have lived in
are developing nations. I have seen so much poverty and suffering from both animals and people
that it has made me almost immune. Animal suffering still eats at my heart, but much of the suffrage
of people, unfortunately, I have become immune too. I know that is sad to say, but it is neither
intentional nor wanted. As a result of their being so many people in need, they have started to
become "invisible". I never thought of it this way until I read over this document, but it made me
think. It made me think of how I personally treat someone in the street who approaches me for
money.

Essay about Salomé Ureña de Henríquez: A Country's...
Salomé Ureña de Henríquez is one of the most influential poets of the Dominican Republic in the
nineteenth century. Her roles as a daughter, writer, patriot, teacher, wife, and mother blended
throughout her life, and inspired her acclaimed poems. As an advocate for women's education, she
opened the doors of higher education to the women of her period and then on.
Salomé Ureña de Henríquez was born 21 October 1850 in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic, to Nicolás Ureña de Mendoza and Gregoria Díaz y León. Her father was a well–educated
man: a lawyer, a teacher, a poet, and as a journalist founded newspaper El Progreso in 1853. She
was born in a very turbulent time, surrounded by political uncertainty. Salomé Ureña was born ...

That while I dream for you a palm,
And to the future you walk,
No more it will be oppressed of anguish the soul
When it ponders in the silence calm
The solemn majesty of your ruins. (Ureña 50–59)
Her poems portrayed the real situations, they "show both her concern for the development of her
country and its possibilities of achieving progress and her unfailing love for her homeland" (Valle).
Her patriotism flourished in her poetic work, being her main theme from 1872 to 1880. Joaquin
Balaguer, ex–president of the Dominican Republic, in the prologue of Poesias Completas
distinguishes Salomé from other Dominican poets because of the "sincerity of her enthusiasm for
the ideals of the patriotic progress, the passion profoundly felt from the glories of the Republic, and
for the conquest of the victorious science" (Ureña).
In 1880 she married Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal, which was an admirer of hers for some time
before, and shared her interest in politics, and scholastic ideas of Eugenio Maria de Hostos. They
procreated four children: Francisco, Max, Pedro, and Camila, all became well known in the literary
world. After she married, her poetry output

What Is The Theme Of This Is How You Lose Her
The novel This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz is a group of short stories about Yunior's
struggles growing up in the states. The novel concentrates on his failed relationships with women
because of the way he was raised by his family. Coming from a poor home in Santo Domingo,
Yunior grows up in America with an absent father, an abusive brother and a distant mother. These
stories show how cultural experiences and values are essential elements for helping people grow and
succeed in life. This literary analysis of This is How You Lose Her will explain how parenting, death
and cultural experiences happen to influence in Yunior's character and his love life.
Yunior's altered ego and struggles began after he moved to America with his father. Yunior came

In Nilda and The Pura Principle, the author describes how Yunior's brother is abusive with his
women and promiscuous. The first time Yunior smelled a woman's vagina was after his brother
touched his former girlfriend Nilda and "held his finger in front of Yunior's nose". (p. 34) This act
shows readers how disrespectful and vulgar Rafa was with women. Rafa was also very bad–
mannered with his mother. It is clear how his father's influences were an element in his behavior.
Even though his mother ignored how bad he treated her, she always let him get away with whatever
he wanted. Rafa being the favorite son, made him seem better than Yunior. After he was diagnosed
with cancer, Rafa became angrier and more abusive with his girlfriends. One time Rafa got so angry
at one of his girlfriends that "he grabbed her around the parking lot by her hair making her pants go
down and show her private parts". (p. 97) The author explicitly shows how Rafa thought he was
powerful among women. These experiences of mistreating women like non humans reflected on
Yunior's life which made him grow up to be just like

Current political system and its structure
The Dominican Republic is a democratic state that is governed by a representative democracy. The
democratic system is made up of three branches of government in the executive, judiciary, and the
legislature. The president (Bencosme & Norton, 2005) represents the head of state. The president is
the head of the executive branch. This branch is assigned the duties of making and executing the
laws of the country. The laws are passed by the congress and then executed by the executive through
the leadership of the president. The president is concerned with the roles of appointing the cabinet,
and being the commander of the country's army. The president and his vice work in accordance to
the terms of the executive, and they are elected into office for a period of four years. The president
does other roles like the appointment of the governors of the various governments (Bencosme &
Norton, 2005). These governors are 31 in number. This country is a multi–party state where
elections are held after two years. There are other humanitarian groups like civil organizations,
advocacy groups, and many other political parties. Some of the major parties are the Social
Christian Reformist Party and the Dominican Liberation Party. The latest presidential elections were
held in 2008 with Leonel Fernandez came out as the winner (The Rough guide to the Dominican

My Vacation To Punta Cana
My Truth Essay
This year on Spring Break my family went on vacation to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We
traveled there a couple of times when I was younger, but don't have any memories except for the
flight. I want to share two favorite things that were awesome about our trip, the food and the gift
shops. I really enjoyed both of them because the food tasted delicious and the gift shops had a bunch
of cool items such as chocolate, medication, beach towels, and a lot of expensive jewelry and
antiques that just cost too much.
The food in the Dominican Republic always tasted like it came from a restaurant and I never was
concerned about it because it was an all–inclusive resort. The food was really delicious. Whenever
we went to the buffet I was hungry as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The breakfast omelettes were a favorite of everyone at our table. We feasted on freshly grilled steaks
and mouth watering desserts like fruits we dipped in a chocolate fountain, gourmet brownies, and
fancy pies. I could smell the bacon sizzling from a mile away. I could hear the chefs cooking,
laughing, and enjoying working together from behind their stations. The waiters and waitresses at
the resort were very nice, polite, and were always very entertaining whenever they walked up to
you. Another fantastic part about the servers is most of them knew how to speak English clearly
which is kind of unusual because they live in the Dominican Republic where most of the community
speaks Spanish. Sometimes we waited in a long line of people to fill our plates the food was
incredible, the waiters and waitresses were fabulous, and the atmosphere was warm. A couple nights
a local band of musicians played songs and strolled around the dining room. The only bad part about
the buffet was the other people because they were loud. Some families would always make a lot of
noise and were too many people in line for the food. The family members that went along with me

Football : The Most Watched Sport
RONALDO Football. The most watched sport in the world. And we're not talking about the football
with the Mannings, Deflategate, and Adrian Peterson. What's being talked about is what Europe and
most of the world call football, but America calls it soccer. Soccer was first invented in China in 300
B.C, where kids would kick leather balls by kicking it into a small net. Greeks and Romans played
soccer for fun, but it wasn't until the 18th century when people would start to play soccer as a full–
time game. Football was first introduced to the Olympics in the 1900 Summer Olympics after the
sport wasn't in the 1896 Olympics. Women's football, however, wasn't in the Olympics until 1996.
Many American kids and other players have played soccer in leagues by the time soccer was
introduced into the Olympics, but men that wanted to go pro would have to move to Europe to play
until 1993 when America's MLS began. But this article isn't about the history of soccer. This article
is about one of the biggest rivalries in sports history since the question of is Lebron James better
than Michael Jordan. The question is who's the better player: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.
Even though they play for different teams, are in different leagues, and both want the title for best
player, they do have a lot in common. Ronaldo is only two years older than Messi, and both didn't
grow up with a lot. Both athletes started by a young age, and both made it to professional and
national teams before most

Trujillo an autarch and the antagonist of the novel, a cruel man with false views on what it mean to

shadows that trujillo had set. A dictator that accomplished money, agitation from those who are
innocent. It is sad to say that in this world there were beings like that and other who envy his role in

The Republic Of The Dominican Republic Essay
The dominican Republic is known as the breadbasket of the Caribbean because it grows, farms, and
catches almost everything that's served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Dominican Republic
was the first colony founded by Christopher Columbus. It used to go by "La Hispaniola" in colonial
times. Also the flag of the Dominican Republic is the only national flag in the world to feature the
image of a bible. My country is the Dominican Republic. I learned about the culture, food, religion,
imports and exports, geography, sports, and family. All of it was very eye opening.
Geography
The geography is pretty much the same as most countries. The natural resources are nickel, gold,
and silver. They have mountains with valleys, and rugged highlands. The highest elevation is three
thousand one–hundred seventy–five meters. It is located in the heart of the Caribbean, the
Dominican Republic is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Dominican
Republic is the second–highest island in the Caribbean, with a surface area of forty–eight thousand
one–hundred ninety–eight square kilometers, which is slightly more than twice the size of New
Hampshire, USA. The biggest city is Santiago de los Caballeros, with five–hundred one–thousand
eight–hundred people. There are now about 8.5 million permanent residents in the country. The
capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo, which is the oldest city in the new world. It
has a population of about 2.5 million people. The

Water Scarcity Is A Essential Part Of Our Planet Earth
Water is a vital part of our planet Earth. Without it, the number of negative impacts it can have is
unimaginable. The southeastern states in Brazil are one of the many regions of the world affected by
drought. Not having enough water for the necessary daily activities has driven people to extremes in
order to get the water that they need. Unacceptable water supply has led to issues in the economy,
low food supply, starvation of animals, reduced quality of health, loss of life and more. This raises a
big concern for future water supply. The effects it has in this region can worsen and possibly spread
to other areas. Eventually, the water may run out and leave people with no promising solution.
Water scarcity is a problem that is currently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In over 80 years, this region in Brazil has never encountered such devastating results in water deficit
(Rigby, 2015). The drought they are experiencing there is causing noteworthy consequences for
many aspects including the economy of Brazil.
Several plans have been made in hopes of creating solutions to the shortage of water. Some of these
projects have not been successful. In June, the governor of Sao Paulo launched a system connecting
a river named River Guaio to the water supply of Sao Paulo. Unfortunately, the plan did not go as
expected. The poor flow of the river was not able to reach the intended 265 gallons of water transfer
to the water supply. This project alone cost 8.3 million dollars (Rigby, 2015). Other ideas and
projects to help this issue are in progress, including one that is worth more than four times the cost
of the one that began in June. If the outcome is anything like the one previously mentioned the cost
of these attempts may cause damage to the economy. Investing a great amount of money may not be
worth it if it does not lead to positive results.
The drought in this region of Brazil has caused some states to fight over water. Rio de Janeiro and
Sao Paulo are disputing over this subject. A water source in the area supplies water to both Sao
Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In desperation, Sao Paulo requested that the water from this source be
rerouted only to them. This caused an

Because the country is located directly in the path of the hurricane belt, winds and rain are stronger,
bringing cooler temperatures and causing rainfall that varies from year to year with 53 inches in the
east regions, 82 inches in the northeast, and 17 inches in the west. This is typical for this region, and
cold temperatures are not at all experienced. Due to this particular type of climate, the country has
more than 50 percent of agricultural land use, and 40 percent forest area.
Surprisingly the flora and fauna is significantly low in the country. Although there is an abundance
of vast open land, it is only in the areas where precipitation is high that the grasslands are thicker
and heavier. One very common type of plant that grows throughout the island is the Royal palms,
but overall the land has been taken over for permanent agriculture which it occupies two–fifths of
the land. This is evident in the areas with fertile soils such as the valleys and low mountain slopes.
Just like the plants, there are very few animal types that inhabit the land. Near the Yaque River and
Lake Enriquillo you will be able to find alligators and flamingos due to the swamp like
environment. Within the coral reefs you can find a small variety of fish such as yellowtail snapper
and shellfish. Though there are ducks, doves, and a variety of other birds they are only seasonal
visitors to the island.

Honduras and The Dominican Republic are said to be almost the same culture because of
similarities in their cultures. Although many may think they are the same because they are both

have similarities like in there holidays, clothing and even in their foods. Although they have their
similarities they are own unique in their own way of doing things. This differences make people
proud of their culture because it's means they are different from others. They do have differences in
like the way they dress, the way they celebrate and the way they prepare their food. This things

Dominican Music and Film
The Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic is little known by most Americans, but
America is ever present in the Dominican consciousness. Until Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire
went head to head in the legendary homerun battle of 1998, few Americans were aware of any
American–Dominican rivalry in western hemispheric culture. Nothing gave Dominicans more pride
than to see Sosa hold Major League Baseball's homerun record, albeit for less than 24 hours before
McGuire reclaimed U.S. dominance in "America's favorite pastime." Only merengue, a tropical
music and dance form, exceeds baseball in its ability to raise Dominican nationalist sentiment vis–

During the dictatorship, popular lyrics extolled the virtues of Trujillismo even as it was speciously
based on terror and rule by a mano dura (iron fist).
After Trujillo was killed in an assassination plot that many Dominicans deemed heroic (see next
page), merengue faced an uncertain future. Artists trained during the trujillato, including "king of
merengue" Johnny Ventura, summarily dropped the overt propaganda, but they emerged from the
Trujillo era with a heightened awareness of the power of their craft. Johnny Ventura would later
become an active political figure, and in 1998, win the mayoral election of Santo Domingo, the
capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic. In an interview in the summer of 2000, Johnny
Ventura asserts, "I believe getting involved—not just the artists—in the search for
solutions to the great wrongs and problems that we [Dominicans] face should be everyone's
obligation." Of course the great majority of Dominican leaders are non–artists, but Ventura's
statement highlights an assumption in Dominican culture that merengueros can make serious
contributions to Dominican society and politics.

The Time Of The Butterflies By Julia Alvarez Essay
The Dominican Republic is a place where novels take place and authors are raised. In the book In

book and how the time was back then in the 1950's. Moving through the novel, readers see an
overview of the book, the life of the author and how it all can all relate to the culture of dictatorship
in the Dominican Republic. In this non–fiction historical novel, it allows readers to get a sense of

to be the only one left to tell their story" (Alvarez 10). As the exposition starts off, Dede, the only
sister alive, is asked about her sisters which lead to a trip down memory lane. One of the three
sisters decides to get married and have children while the other two decide to join the revolution
against Trujillo which leads to the conflict of the story. Patria is the oldest of the three who chose to

things that represents the city is this precise dance. This affirmation was made official when in

A Small Pond And A Big Pond
If you are given a choice, what would you pick to be? A big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a

the pond?
Being born in Santo Domingo put me for many years as the "Big fish in the Small Pond" Since I
was a kid, one of my passions have been to write, at the age of 7 I sent an article to a Children's

Nothing, Culturally Relevant, Ever Came Easy For Oscar Wao
Nothing, culturally relevant, ever came easy to Oscar Wao. Oscar came from a Dominican family
where looks, girls and sex came before anything else. When he didn 't fit into the mold of, what he
thought was, the typical Dominican, he decided that a curse plagued him. His biggest concern, going
into college and driven by hormones, was girls – or the lack thereof. When his two best friends got
girlfriends senior year and refused to help set him up with one of their friends, he realized that, "his
fucked–up comic–book–reading, role–playing–game–loving, no–sports–playing–friends were
embarrassed by him," and that realization opened his eyes to what was important to him in his life
(Díaz 29). He realized that he loved writing and if he wanted to succeed in it, he had to commit
everything to it. Throughout his life, at least the sliver that we see, the only things that he succeeded
at where the things that he committed everything to, mainly his writing. It gave him a reason to live
and that feeling of fulfilment drove him to commit even more to it. For the majority of his life,
nothing besides writing gave him that fulfillment until he met Yebon, a beautiful Dominican girl
who Oscar subsequently fell in love with. Earlier in the story when Oscar lost meaning, after having
his heart broken by La Jablesse, he tried to kill himself. After he survived, he started writing again
and became re–committed to it, it gave him the strength to recover and move on. When he met

The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao By Junot Diaz
Writers are people of great influence; they write for many reasons including to inform, express an
emotion, or even to persuade. With skill in rhetoric, writers may have the power to convince readers
to succumb to their beliefs. In the novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Junot Díaz displays
this great influential power of a writer and compares it with the ideas of dictatorship. Díaz uses two
types of dictators in the book: a Dominican dictator named Rafael Trujillo and the narrator of the
story, Yunior. Both hold a similar dictatorial power over groups of people whether they are citizens
of a country or readers of a novel; writers can dictate what they wish their readers to know, just as
dictators of a country can divulge or withhold any information they wish their citizens to know. The
character Yunior, a friend of the de León–Cabral family, narrates the stories of the family's lives to
give an account of the effects Trujillo and the curse of the fukú had on them. Through his account of
their life stories, Yunior uses his writing to counter Trujillo's power creating his own counterspell, or
zafa, to reduce the negative effects of the fukú. Yunior serves as a dictator by writing the book as a
zafa through withholding information from readers and degrading Trujillo in the story, all while
displaying the problems of a dictatorial voice.
To counter the fukú curse that lingers in the lives of the de León–Cabral family, Yunior's recounting
of the family's stories acts as

Junot Diaz 's Truly Does Tell The Brief Story Of The...
Junot Diaz's novel truly does tell the brief story of the wondrous life of Oscar de Léon, our
Dominican–American protagonist, better known as Oscar Wao. Weighing in at 245 pounds, our
hopeless romantic loves comic books, writes science–fiction in all of his spare time, and, as
described by our homodiegetic narrator Yunior, is a "loser with a capital L" (Diaz 17). While the title
might allude that this is a story solely about Oscar, Diaz also delves deep into the lives of those
closest to him. This narrative tells the epic journey of Oscar, as well as his family members, and
how their experiences in the United States and Dominican Republic come together full–circle at the
end of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, with the help of some postmodern techniques. As an
immigrant himself, Diaz is able to use his journey to bring attention to the cultural stereotypes of his
characters, but unlike many bildungsroman writings, our character's coming of age story does not
provide him with enough spiritual learnings to give him the quintessential happy ending. The overall
growth of Oscar only reveals the flaws in his culture, a fatal flaw in his case. Because Oscar does
not comply with the Dominican standards, he faces heavy repercussions in his life. As a story told in
a fragmented, non–linear form, Yunior is able to recall anecdotes from different time periods,
whether of Oscar, his mother Beli, or his sister Lola. Diaz gives his narrator the ability to tell a
historical account of

Social And Cultural Groups Become A Key Tool For Harmony...
Introduction
Since the 1990s the steady rise of the Internet has facilitated many avenues for change in our
contemporary world. Not least contributing to an ease in travel and communication which could
well give the impression of a globalscape constructed . with very few boundaries. A glance at any
Western World news source will undoubtedly report on the 'problem' of immigration, as though
Europe is under siege by scores of deterritorialized people and "transmigrants" who have exploited
the fluid boundaries of postmodern hyperspace. It is in this area of social conflict that the discipline
of anthropology best serves as a sort of practical philosophy; examining the social queries of
humanity, alongside examining our interactions and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Borders of life and lands – Gregory
Boca Chica is municipality of the Dominican Republic, located upon the island of Hispaniola in the
Gulf of Chiriquí. The history of conflict between the Dominican side of the island (influenced by
Spanish colonial rule) and the Western Haitian side is long standing, dating back to the 1880's. Upon
the modern day landscape there is an imaginary line which divides Hispaniola into a land of two
countries. One side of which is Haiti and the other the Dominican Republic. It is on the Dominican
side where Gregory focuses his ethnography.
Through anecdotal interviews bureaucratic and social borders are described, which not only exclude
and disempower the Haitian residents of the country, but which also also alienate citizens of
Dominican descent due to their financial state. Dominican parents are required to register the birth
of a child at office of Civil Registry so as to be issued with a birth certificate. When the child
reaches the age of eighteen, this certificate can than be exchanged for an 'adult cédula', which is
required for voting, securing formal employment and obtaining licenses and other documents.
However, many parents, especially those in rural areas, may delay or neglect registering their
children's birth, through oversight, ignorance, or lack of resources to travel or to pay the required
taxes (Gregory 2007:36). As such it is estimated

Before the war, the whole island of Hispaniola had belonged to Haiti for 22 years. The Dominican
War of Independence of 1844 was led by twenty year old Juan Pablo Duarte. Duarte along with
Matias Ramon Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sanchez formed a group they called La Trinitaria or
the Trinity. They recruited many people and kept their actions very secret to avoid detection by any
Haitian authorities. The group was eventually discovered and it was forced to change its name to La
Filantropica or The Philanthropic. The group continued to make trouble for the Haitians. In 1843 the
group had a break as it worked with a "liberal Haitian party" they were able to overthrow the
president. Their success continued and on February 27, 1844, Dominican rebels seized the Fortaleza
Ozama in Santo Domingo. Within days all Haitian officials left Santo Domingo. The war continued
and the Dominican Republic continued to defend against Haitian attacks. The Republic went on to
win more wars against Haiti's attacks. "In November 6, 1844 a Constituent assembly drafted a

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz is about a Dominican family who lives in
Paterson New Jersey and they have been through many tribulations in life. The theme I chose for my
essay is Fuku and Love, in the novel these two themes were mainly the reason why the characters
got their self in situations they could not overcome. The novel is overall about finding love and
overcoming the family curse. It is believed that Fuku was created on the arrival of the Europeans,

Beli did not rush herself, she was reserved and after all she did not want history repeating itself. But
it did not take long for her to fall in love with the Gangster. "Beli in love! Round Two! But unlike
what happened with Pujos, this was the real deal: pure uncut unadulterated love..." (Diaz page 125).
The Gangster promised Beli a better life and she was finally happy in life. They stayed in the love
motel most of the time and sometimes the Gangster will disappear for weeks.
Belicia Cabral was living another fantasy and she believed that the Gangster truly loved her and her
dream of being married would finally come true. "The magic she'd been waiting for. She placed her
hand on her flat stomach and heard the wedding bells loud and clears..." (Diaz page 136). Beli was
blinded by love.
One thing the Gangster forgot to tell Beli is that he was married and the wife was Trujillo blood.
Since Beli was so excited about the pregnancy, she was telling everyone about it and soon the news
got to the palace and the Gangster wife was furious.
Beli was kidnapped by the secret police; while she was gone La Inca turned to God and started to
pray. Belicia was beaten to near death and even during the point of time, she still believed that the
Gangster would save her.

Manolo Is Enriquillo By Julia Alvarez: Analysis
Just like the spies in the book, people who seemed to just be servants reported Alvarez's father for
revolting against Trujillo and they had to flee to avoid persecution. Many people felt like the
oppressive dictatorship had been in place for too long and they would start revolutions and fight to
overthrow the dictator. Alvarez wrote, "A national underground is forming. Everyone and everything
has a codename. Manolo is Enriquillo, after the great Taino chieftain, and Minerva, of course, is
Mariposa. If I were to say tennis shoes, you'd know we were talking about ammunition. The
pineapples for the picnic are the grenades. The goat must die for us to eat at the picnic." (142)

Prayer helped the girls in the book to control things in happening in their lives. One example is, "It
was after my conference with Sor Asunción, once I had begun praying to know my calling, that
suddenly, like a lull in a storm, the cravings stopped. All was quiet. I slept obediently through the
night."(48) One of the girls was struggling to control herself from doing inappropriate things, and
through prayer she managed to control the issue. Religion also had a large impact on what the
characters did and where they went. The book said, "It wasn't my idea to go on the pilgrimage to
Higüey. That was Mamá's brainstorm. There had been sightings of the Virgencita...... It was too
whimsical a sighting for the archbishop to pronounce as authentic, but still. Even El Jefe had
attributed the failure of the invasion from Cayo Confites to our patron saint." (55) The mother's faith
was strong and she decided to go on a pilgrimage in the name of the Virgencita and she brought her
daughters along with her to bring them back to God. Even when it seemed that one of the girls had
lost faith completely, there was still something that had drawn her back. Alvarez wrote, "I turned
around and saw the packed pews, hundreds of weary, upturned faces, and it was as if I'd been facing
the wrong way all my life. My faith stirred. It kicked and somersaulted in my belly, coming alive......

The History Of The Dominican Republic:. The Dominican...
The History of the Dominican Republic: The Dominican Republic also known as the island of
Hispaniola is the second largest island in the Caribbean, which contains two countries, Haiti & the
Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic was first explored by Columbus on his voyage to the
New World. However, the origin and true history of the Dominican Republic goes far beyond his
voyage. Before Christopher Columbus went on his journey to explore America, he stumbled upon
the island of Hispaniola. Columbus claimed this island as Hispaniola in the year of 1492. Hispaniola
was inhabited by indigenous people, also known as Tainos. In the year of 1493, Columbus had a

This Revolution was a successful movement for anti–slavery and anti–colonial actions that took
place in the island. This revolution lasted from 1791 to the year of 1804. It was the biggest form of
impact of slavery to destroy its existence. This revolution helped change the views of the slaves to
no longer feel inferior and to reach freedom. The French controlled the entire island.
In the transition of the Revolution, came along a very important man that led to movement to the
independence of the Dominican Republic. As the French still controlled the island a Man by the
name of Juan Pablo Duarte searched for independence. In the 1800's, Juan Pablo Duarte joined
forces alongside of other revolutionary figures to create a secret society to win independence from
Haiti. The name of this secret society was La Trinitaria. On the date of February 27th 1844, La
Trinitarios claimed and gained independence from Haiti. The Dominican Republic was then able to
create its first constitution. The Dominican Republic was explored and controlled by Columbus but
before the transition throughout the centuries, the Tainos lived on this land and Africans were also
once raised in this land as well. The country of the Dominican Republic goes far beyond Latinos and
Hispanics. It is deeply rooted with Indigenous tribes, African slaves & European settlers. These
three components are the combination of a Latino face, the Dominican Republic history and their

Fuku–a curse of bad consequences
"Fuku–generally a curse or a doom of some kind; specifically the Curse and the Doom of the New
World," written in the Pulitzer Prize winning novel–The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which
is written by Junot Diaz (Diaz 1). If you make a bad choice, you will receive "fuku," says Junot Diaz
in the interview on Q TV (YouTube). In the interview with Slate Magazine, Diaz says that the novel
"is all about the dangers of dictatorship" (Rourke 3). It describes how Oscar's family's three
generations have been affected by the dictatorship of Trujillo who was the president of Dominican

Then Abelard makes a bad choice again. He once has a chance to send his daughters to Cube to live
with his mistress Lydia's family, so they can escape form Trujillo. However, Abelard chooses to
believe "his Trujillo philosophy" that "he only had to keep his head down, his mouth shut, his
pockets open, his daughters hidden for another decade or two. By then ... Trujillo would be dead and
the Dominican Republic would be a true democracy" (Diaz 227). Apparently, it turns out that his
hope is just a hope in terms of his ending. Nevertheless, there is third opportunity offered that is he
leaves everything and runs away with his mistress. Once again, he makes a bad choice that he
chooses to stay in Dominican Republic. Therefore, all he can do left is waiting for fuku. Abelard
ends up being imprisoned and dying. Because of that, his family breaks completely. Two of three
daughters die in accidents after they are sent to relatives' family. The third daughter Beli is sold to a
strange family as a slave. We can easily see the reason that fuku befalls Abelard is that he makes bad
choices again and again.
Also, we can find the same reason that fuku befalls Beli who is Oscar's mother as Abelard's. Beli is
the second generation of Abelard's family under the dictatorship of fuku. After a dark and

bridging the gap between elegance and bawdiness with huge musical and entertainment skills. It has

Rise Of Rarlo Trujillo
Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina was the President of the Dominican Republic. He ruled the country
as a dictator. In order to maintain his power, he eliminated people who disagreed with him by
dismissing them from their jobs or even murdering them. He also put his family members in
positions of power in the economy. Rafael Trujillo was a dictator that stopped at nothing in order to
maintain his power over the Dominican Republic. On October 24, 1891, Rafael Trujillo was born in
San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic. He lived with his lower–middle–class parents and 10 siblings.
During his childhood, Trujillo's education consisted of schools that were held in different villagers'
homes. He was only taught basic principles in these schools. Rafael Trujillo got his first job when he
was sixteen years old but subsequently lost his job after he joined a gang and committed various
crimes, including forging checks. Trujillo eventually gave up his life of crime after he married his
first wife, Aminta Ledesima, and they had two daughters (Biography.com). Rafael Trujillo's rise to
power began on January 11, 1919 when he took his oath to become an officer in the Constabulary
Guard. Trujillo quickly rose through the military ranks and by 1925 he was the commander in chief
of the Northern Department of the Guard (Historic World Leaders). His shot at becoming president

As Ulisis Heureaux, the Dominican dictator from 1888–1899, brought the Dominican Republic
(DR) into tremendous debt by borrowing money and bonds from European countries such as
Germany and France, America sought to protect the DR from European imperialism under the

Westendorp went bankrupt in 1892, the American company, San Domingo Improvement Company,

Heaureax after he was assassinated in 1899 was still owed to Germany and France, who responded

II. What does marital success and family look like in this culture?1
There are three different types of marital unions in the DR these include church marriages, civil
marriages, and consensual unions. Church marriages and civil marriages are dominant among the
upper classes and the weddings can be expensive, while consensual unions are most common among
the poor. This can be traced all the way back to the slave periods. During this time Slave families
were broken up and marriages were not allowed. It is also important to note that the DR is a leader
when it comes to the number of girls that get married before the age of 18. A startling 41% get
married before they reach the age of 18. And almost 13% were married before they turned 15.
Overall, marriage is an important part of life as a Dominican.
III. What are some proper etiquette rules?
When meeting someone the rules are not that much different than the American way of meeting
someone new. A simple handshake with good eye contact and a welcoming smile is the norm.
Although it is important to note that in the DR culture maintaining eye contact indicates interest and
it may be considered rude not to make good eye contact. If you are invited to dinner it is expected to

ear, in volking the lord's name. And on the third day He rose again..."(200). In this quote it shows
how she is comparing how Jesus rose and came alive again. Which she felt like she was dead, and
she was rising again. This is a part of figurative language because it is comparing her and Jesus.
Julia Alvarez has used short sentence for the kind of sentence structure. She wrote in something so
short such as "And the third day he rose again." This shows imagery because I can and someone
reading this can imagine how she was feeling and maybe how jesus rose from the dead. Diction is a
part of many novels. In the quote it shows diction because you can tell how the way Julia Alvarez
wrote the book. The way that Julia alvarez stated the quote above shows diction and the way the
character is feeling. In the novel it states, "And that's how I got free. I don't mean just going to
sleepaway school on a train with a trunkful of new things. I mean in my head after I got to
Inmaculada and met Sinita and saw what happened to Lina and realized that I'd just left a small cage
to go into a bigger one, the size of the whole country. ." this shows how she was comparing the cage
to Dominican Republic. As they do not

The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao By Juniot Diaz

  • 1. The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Juniot Diaz In the novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Juniot Diaz you start to notice a cultural gender role and how there is certain expectations of them. The novel is based on a young boy named Oscar Wao and the hardships that one event has caused to an entire family. Even though the novel is focused on Oscar the author always went back to his sister and his mother. The author described the women as "real, strong women, even though they were being filtered through a somewhat distorted male point of view" (Stevenson 1). These two women play an important roll in this novel, they ultimately don't show the cultural gender role and what is expected from them. All the important female rolls in Oscars life are independent and strong women but they all have one thing in common, being mistreated by men. "Women's history led to the historical study of gender. Gender includes the behavior, manners, morals, speech, and emotions expected of men and women because of their sex. Historians of gender have analyzed many characteristics of "masculine" and "feminine" behavior in relation to social stereotypes and economic power. The historians' studies have provided a means to understand a wide range of social behavior–from attitudes about sex to economic inequality–in terms of social conventions of gender" (Partner 1). This is a common factor in the novel "The Brief Life of Oscar Wao" by Diaz, he shows how the Dominican culture views their women and how they aren't always respected. ... • 5. Response to the Three Stages of Cultural 'Defiance' Essay Response to the Three Stages of Cultural "Defiance" As I read through the three stages that a person takes as they transition through cultural "defiance", I couldn't help to think about my own experience with this. I have traveled through 39 countries, and lived in a total of four different countries. I currently live in Casablanca, Morocco, and I have lived in both Brazil and the Dominican Republic. Of course, I was born and raised in the United States. My parents were both born in the United States, but my mother's ethnic background is Danish and German, and my father's ethnic background is Lebanese. His parents both immigrated to the United States from Lebanon. My father's parents were Muslim, but after they died, my father ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I felt comfortable there. I liked Brazil second, but didn't like the city I lived in. Morocco has definitely been the most difficult for me, and I haven't learned to love it, not even like it so much. I more just tolerate it. However, Morocco is also very different from the United States, and doesn't have many comforts that Americans are used too. I am sure that is a big reason that I find it a very difficult place to live. I am sure that is why I experience the most "culture shock" here. I say this to say that my own stage of cultural "defiance" has been a mixture of all three. I believe that the Dominican Republic was my example of stage three, followed by Brazil being the essence of stage one, and finally Morocco has definitely been an example of stage two. STAGE ONE: Denial of Differences (or the Invisible People) All three countries that I have lived in are developing nations. I have seen so much poverty and suffering from both animals and people that it has made me almost immune. Animal suffering still eats at my heart, but much of the suffrage of people, unfortunately, I have become immune too. I know that is sad to say, but it is neither intentional nor wanted. As a result of their being so many people in need, they have started to become "invisible". I never thought of it this way until I read over this document, but it made me think. It made me think of how I personally treat someone in the street who approaches me for money. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay about Salomé Ureña de Henríquez: A Country's... Salomé Ureña de Henríquez is one of the most influential poets of the Dominican Republic in the nineteenth century. Her roles as a daughter, writer, patriot, teacher, wife, and mother blended throughout her life, and inspired her acclaimed poems. As an advocate for women's education, she opened the doors of higher education to the women of her period and then on. Salomé Ureña de Henríquez was born 21 October 1850 in the city of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to Nicolás Ureña de Mendoza and Gregoria Díaz y León. Her father was a well–educated man: a lawyer, a teacher, a poet, and as a journalist founded newspaper El Progreso in 1853. She was born in a very turbulent time, surrounded by political uncertainty. That while I dream for you a palm, And to the future you walk, No more it will be oppressed of anguish the soul When it ponders in the silence calm The solemn majesty of your ruins. (Ureña 50–59) Her poems portrayed the real situations, they "show both her concern for the development of her country and its possibilities of achieving progress and her unfailing love for her homeland" (Valle). Her patriotism flourished in her poetic work, being her main theme from 1872 to 1880. Joaquin Balaguer, ex–president of the Dominican Republic, in the prologue of Poesias Completas distinguishes Salomé from other Dominican poets because of the "sincerity of her enthusiasm for the ideals of the patriotic progress, the passion profoundly felt from the glories of the Republic, and for the conquest of the victorious science" (Ureña). In 1880 she married Francisco Henríquez y Carvajal, which was an admirer of hers for some time before, and shared her interest in politics, and scholastic ideas of Eugenio Maria de Hostos. They procreated four children: Francisco, Max, Pedro, and Camila, all became well known in the literary world. After she married, her poetry output ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. What Is The Theme Of This Is How You Lose Her The novel This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz is a group of short stories about Yunior's struggles growing up in the states. The novel concentrates on his failed relationships with women because of the way he was raised by his family. Coming from a poor home in Santo Domingo, Yunior grows up in America with an absent father, an abusive brother and a distant mother. These stories show how cultural experiences and values are essential elements for helping people grow and succeed in life. This literary analysis of This is How You Lose Her will explain how parenting, death and cultural experiences happen to influence in Yunior's character and his love life. Yunior's altered ego and struggles began after he moved to America with his father. Yunior came with his mother and oldest brother from Santo Domingo to live in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Nilda and The Pura Principle, the author describes how Yunior's brother is abusive with his women and promiscuous. The first time Yunior smelled a woman's vagina was after his brother touched his former girlfriend Nilda and "held his finger in front of Yunior's nose". (p. 34) This act shows readers how disrespectful and vulgar Rafa was with women. Rafa was also very bad– mannered with his mother. It is clear how his father's influences were an element in his behavior. Even though his mother ignored how bad he treated her, she always let him get away with whatever he wanted. Rafa being the favorite son, made him seem better than Yunior. After he was diagnosed with cancer, Rafa became angrier and more abusive with his girlfriends. One time Rafa got so angry at one of his girlfriends that "he grabbed her around the parking lot by her hair making her pants go down and show her private parts". (p. 97) The author explicitly shows how Rafa thought he was powerful among women. These experiences of mistreating women like non humans reflected on Yunior's life which made him grow up to be just like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Today's Dominican Republic Today's Dominican Republic Current political system and its structure The Dominican Republic is a democratic state that is governed by a representative democracy. The democratic system is made up of three branches of government in the executive, judiciary, and the legislature. The president (Bencosme & Norton, 2005) represents the head of state. The president is the head of the executive branch. This branch is assigned the duties of making and executing the laws of the country. The laws are passed by the congress and then executed by the executive through the leadership of the president. The president is concerned with the roles of appointing the cabinet, and being the commander of the country's army. The president and his vice work in accordance to the terms of the executive, and they are elected into office for a period of four years. The president does other roles like the appointment of the governors of the various governments (Bencosme & Norton, 2005). These governors are 31 in number. We traveled there a couple of times when I was younger, but don't have any memories except for the flight. I want to share two favorite things that were awesome about our trip, the food and the gift shops. I really enjoyed both of them because the food tasted delicious and the gift shops had a bunch of cool items such as chocolate, medication, beach towels, and a lot of expensive jewelry and antiques that just cost too much. The food in the Dominican Republic always tasted like it came from a restaurant and I never was concerned about it because it was an all–inclusive resort. The food was really delicious. The waiters and waitresses at the resort were very nice, polite, and were always very entertaining whenever they walked up to you. Another fantastic part about the servers is most of them knew how to speak English clearly which is kind of unusual because they live in the Dominican Republic where most of the community speaks Spanish. Sometimes we waited in a long line of people to fill our plates the food was incredible, the waiters and waitresses were fabulous, and the atmosphere was warm. A couple nights a local band of musicians played songs and strolled around the dining room. The only bad part about the buffet was the other people because they were loud. • 15. Football : The Most Watched Sport RONALDO Football. The most watched sport in the world. And we're not talking about the football with the Mannings, Deflategate, and Adrian Peterson. What's being talked about is what Europe and most of the world call football, but America calls it soccer. Soccer was first invented in China in 300 B.C, where kids would kick leather balls by kicking it into a small net. Greeks and Romans played soccer for fun, but it wasn't until the 18th century when people would start to play soccer as a full– time game. Football was first introduced to the Olympics in the 1900 Summer Olympics after the sport wasn't in the 1896 Olympics. Women's football, however, wasn't in the Olympics until 1996. Many American kids and other players have played soccer in leagues by the time soccer was introduced into the Olympics, but men that wanted to go pro would have to move to Europe to play until 1993 when America's MLS began. But this article isn't about the history of soccer. This article is about one of the biggest rivalries in sports history since the question of is Lebron James better than Michael Jordan. The question is who's the better player: Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. Even though they play for different teams, are in different leagues, and both want the title for best player, they do have a lot in common. Ronaldo is only two years older than Messi, and both didn't grow up with a lot. Both athletes started by a young age, and both made it to professional and national teams before most ... • 17. Why Is Trujillo A Hero Trujillo an autarch and the antagonist of the novel, a cruel man with false views on what it mean to have freedom. Just like our history show we never seem to have villains who are no different from each other. People who try to make a change and never succeed because they are afraid of the shadows that trujillo had set. A dictator that accomplished money, agitation from those who are innocent. • 21. Water Scarcity Is A Essential Part Of Our Planet Earth Water is a vital part of our planet Earth. Without it, the number of negative impacts it can have is unimaginable. The southeastern states in Brazil are one of the many regions of the world affected by drought. Not having enough water for the necessary daily activities has driven people to extremes in order to get the water that they need. Unacceptable water supply has led to issues in the economy, low food supply, starvation of animals, reduced quality of health, loss of life and more. This raises a big concern for future water supply. The effects it has in this region can worsen and possibly spread to other areas. Eventually, the water may run out and leave people with no promising solution. Water scarcity is a problem that is currently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In over 80 years, this region in Brazil has never encountered such devastating results in water deficit (Rigby, 2015). The drought they are experiencing there is causing noteworthy consequences for many aspects including the economy of Brazil. Several plans have been made in hopes of creating solutions to the shortage of water. Some of these projects have not been successful. In June, the governor of Sao Paulo launched a system connecting a river named River Guaio to the water supply of Sao Paulo. Unfortunately, the plan did not go as expected. The poor flow of the river was not able to reach the intended 265 gallons of water transfer to the water supply. This project alone cost 8.3 million dollars (Rigby, 2015). Other ideas and projects to help this issue are in progress, including one that is worth more than four times the cost of the one that began in June. If the outcome is anything like the one previously mentioned the cost of these attempts may cause damage to the economy. Investing a great amount of money may not be worth it if it does not lead to positive results. The drought in this region of Brazil has caused some states to fight over water. Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are disputing over this subject. A water source in the area supplies water to both Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. In desperation, Sao Paulo requested that the water from this source be rerouted only to them. This caused an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because the country is located directly in the path of the hurricane belt, winds and rain are stronger, bringing cooler temperatures and causing rainfall that varies from year to year with 53 inches in the east regions, 82 inches in the northeast, and 17 inches in the west. This is typical for this region, and cold temperatures are not at all experienced. Due to this particular type of climate, the country has more than 50 percent of agricultural land use, and 40 percent forest area. Surprisingly the flora and fauna is significantly low in the country. Although there is an abundance of vast open land, it is only in the areas where precipitation is high that the grasslands are thicker and heavier. One very common type of plant that grows throughout the island is the Royal palms, but overall the land has been taken over for permanent agriculture which it occupies two–fifths of the land. This is evident in the areas with fertile soils such as the valleys and low mountain slopes. Just like the plants, there are very few animal types that inhabit the land. Dominican Music and Film Essay Dominican Music and Film The Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic is little known by most Americans, but America is ever present in the Dominican consciousness. Until Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire went head to head in the legendary homerun battle of 1998, few Americans were aware of any American–Dominican rivalry in western hemispheric culture. Nothing gave Dominicans more pride than to see Sosa hold Major League Baseball's homerun record, albeit for less than 24 hours before McGuire reclaimed U.S. dominance in "America's favorite pastime." After Trujillo was killed in an assassination plot that many Dominicans deemed heroic (see next page), merengue faced an uncertain future. Artists trained during the trujillato, including "king of merengue" Johnny Ventura, summarily dropped the overt propaganda, but they emerged from the Trujillo era with a heightened awareness of the power of their craft. Johnny Ventura would later become an active political figure, and in 1998, win the mayoral election of Santo Domingo, the capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic. In an interview in the summer of 2000, Johnny Ventura asserts, "I believe getting involved—not just the artists—in the search for solutions to the great wrongs and problems that we [Dominicans] face should be everyone's obligation." Of course the great majority of Dominican leaders are non–artists, but Ventura's statement highlights an assumption in Dominican culture that merengueros can make serious contributions to Dominican society and politics. Oscar came from a Dominican family where looks, girls and sex came before anything else. When he didn 't fit into the mold of, what he thought was, the typical Dominican, he decided that a curse plagued him. His biggest concern, going into college and driven by hormones, was girls – or the lack thereof. When his two best friends got girlfriends senior year and refused to help set him up with one of their friends, he realized that, "his fucked–up comic–book–reading, role–playing–game–loving, no–sports–playing–friends were embarrassed by him," and that realization opened his eyes to what was important to him in his life (Díaz 29). • 43. The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao By Junot Diaz Writers are people of great influence; they write for many reasons including to inform, express an emotion, or even to persuade. With skill in rhetoric, writers may have the power to convince readers to succumb to their beliefs. In the novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, Junot Díaz displays this great influential power of a writer and compares it with the ideas of dictatorship. Díaz uses two types of dictators in the book: a Dominican dictator named Rafael Trujillo and the narrator of the story, Yunior. Both hold a similar dictatorial power over groups of people whether they are citizens of a country or readers of a novel; writers can dictate what they wish their readers to know, just as dictators of a country can divulge or withhold any information they wish their citizens to know. The character Yunior, a friend of the de León–Cabral family, narrates the stories of the family's lives to give an account of the effects Trujillo and the curse of the fukú had on them. Through his account of their life stories, Yunior uses his writing to counter Trujillo's power creating his own counterspell, or zafa, to reduce the negative effects of the fukú. Yunior serves as a dictator by writing the book as a zafa through withholding information from readers and degrading Trujillo in the story, all while displaying the problems of a dictatorial voice. To counter the fukú curse that lingers in the lives of the de León–Cabral family, Yunior's recounting of the family's stories acts as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Junot Diaz's novel truly does tell the brief story of the wondrous life of Oscar de Léon, our Dominican–American protagonist, better known as Oscar Wao. Weighing in at 245 pounds, our hopeless romantic loves comic books, writes science–fiction in all of his spare time, and, as described by our homodiegetic narrator Yunior, is a "loser with a capital L" (Diaz 17). While the title might allude that this is a story solely about Oscar, Diaz also delves deep into the lives of those closest to him. This narrative tells the epic journey of Oscar, as well as his family members, and how their experiences in the United States and Dominican Republic come together full–circle at the end of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, with the help of some postmodern techniques. As an immigrant himself, Diaz is able to use his journey to bring attention to the cultural stereotypes of his characters, but unlike many bildungsroman writings, our character's coming of age story does not provide him with enough spiritual learnings to give him the quintessential happy ending. The overall growth of Oscar only reveals the flaws in his culture, a fatal flaw in his case. Because Oscar does not comply with the Dominican standards, he faces heavy repercussions in his life. As a story told in a fragmented, non–linear form, Yunior is able to recall anecdotes from different time periods, whether of Oscar, his mother Beli, or his sister Lola. Upon the modern day landscape there is an imaginary line which divides Hispaniola into a land of two countries. One side of which is Haiti and the other the Dominican Republic. It is on the Dominican side where Gregory focuses his ethnography. In the interview with Slate Magazine, Diaz says that the novel "is all about the dangers of dictatorship" (Rourke 3). He once has a chance to send his daughters to Cube to live with his mistress Lydia's family, so they can escape form Trujillo. However, Abelard chooses to believe "his Trujillo philosophy" that "he only had to keep his head down, his mouth shut, his pockets open, his daughters hidden for another decade or two. By then ... Trujillo would be dead and the Dominican Republic would be a true democracy" (Diaz 227). Apparently, it turns out that his hope is just a hope in terms of his ending. Nevertheless, there is third opportunity offered that is he leaves everything and runs away with his mistress. Once again, he makes a bad choice that he chooses to stay in Dominican Republic. Therefore, all he can do left is waiting for fuku. Abelard ends up being imprisoned and dying. Because of that, his family breaks completely. Two of three daughters die in accidents after they are sent to relatives' family. The third daughter Beli is sold to a strange family as a slave. We can easily see the reason that fuku befalls Abelard is that he makes bad choices again and again. Also, we can find the same reason that fuku befalls Beli who is Oscar's mother as Abelard's. As is the case in all Santos shows, he brought an overweight girl onstage, embraced, stole kisses and simulated (or not) some crotch grabbing (her hand on his). The "Propuesta Indecente" bed scene, of course, is widely anticipated. But in between that–in between Santos making the guys in the audience bark and the women meow–there's a whole lot of music, beautifully executed. Santos can pare down the sound for more acoustic–minded performances where he's accompanied by virtuoso guitar, the single, pizzicato melody lines mimicking his piercing voice. There are songs that feel like little films; stories that make your breath catch, with no need for supporting audiovisual material to distract. There is, finally, an artist who has managed to mainstream a niche genre by effectively bridging the gap between elegance and bawdiness with huge musical and entertainment skills. It has taken Santos more than a decade to reach his current "king" status. But his staying power is more than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
