Folktale Assignment
Essay assignment:
Explain how Snow White, Rapunzel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Beauty and the Beast
conform to at least three elements of Lois Tyson’s and/ or Marcia K. Lieberman’s analyses of
the patterns in folktales. You must use quotes from the stories as well as quotes from
Lieberman’s or Tyson’s essays.
You can introduce the paper by briefly summarizing the folktales or briefly summarizing points
in Lieberman’s and/or Tyson’s essays.
Each body paragraph should give a point from Lieberman or Tyson (quotes are fine; use page
numbers from the documents themselves) and then an analysis of how at least two of the
folktales illustrates that point. Remember not only to quote from the story or paraphrase it but
also analyze what is significant about the story, how it is relevant to the quote from one of our
pieces of criticism. You do not need to give a page number for quotes from the tales
themselves.
You do not need a conclusion. Follow MLA formatting, which is shown on the website. Include
a Works Cited page. I have included a sample Works Cited page of most of the essays you will
be using during the quarter.
Minimum length: two pages. You do not need to write more than three.
