It’s time to bring out the grill and patio furniture, and get back to eating outside: Barbecue
and picnic season is here. It’s just as easy to make outdoor cooking and eating healthful
as it is to make it unhealthful. Studies have shown the average American barbecue can
contain more than 2,000 calories and 120 grams of fat per plate. Add in alcohol and other
beverages and the number is even higher.
Follow these easy ideas to burn calories off your next cookout.
1. Add chicken to the grill instead of just cooking hot dogs and hamburgers
2. Replace white-bread hot dog and hamburger buns with whole-wheat buns
3. Skip the chips and go for sliced fruits or steamed veggies
4. Swap out soda for water or natural flavored drinks
5. Make your own barbecue sauce with natural ingredients
6. Substitute low-fat or fat-free mayonnaise for regular in coleslaw and pasta salad
7. Limit alcoholic drinks, which contain extra calories and increase appetite

Dance for Parkinson’s
Thanks to a new collaboration with teaching
artists from the non-profit Lancaster-based
Contemporary Ballet of PA (COBALT),
Dance for Parkinson’s is coming to the UFC.
Why Dance for Parkinson’s? The classes
empower people with Parkinson’s disease to
explore movement in ways that are stimulat-
ing and creative by focusing on key princi-
ples related to dance from instilling confi-
dence to breaking isolation, stimulating men-
tal activity to increasing spatial awareness.
The pilot classes, which are open to persons
with Parkinson’s disease, their families,
friends, and care partners, are free of charge.
Those interested in more information should
visit the COBALT web site or call (717)676-
9039.
