3. 1. WHERE DOES THE OCEANS’ POLLUTION COME
FROM?
Most of the waste we produceevery day endsup beingdumpedin our seas.
Men has alwaysbelievedthat the oceans
are like a landfill,withoutany negative
consequencesdue to its greatness.
CURIOUS FACT!
The 80% of the waste that we
can find in our oceans come
from land activities and only the
20% come from the maritime
activities
During the last three centuries, marine pollution
has increased significantly, specially because of
the industrialization. Other causes are:
Wastewater and rainwater
Toxic chemical substances
from the factories
Oil spills
Marine mining
Dumped plastics Global warming
4. 2. WHAT WASTE CAN WE FIND IN THE OCEAN IN GREAT
QUANTITY?
THEY ARE CAUSING
SERIOUS DAMAGES
For example, marine
animals like turtles
can digest them and
endanger the specie.
Plasticsare the main problem
Plastics can reach the oceans in a lot of differents ways and most of them degenerate
into small particles.
Also, when plastic objects reach the water it takes them hundreds of years to degrade.
The oceansare full
of plastic.
It is calculated that
about 5 billion
pieces of plastic are
just in the oceans.
5. 3. POLLUTION EFFECTS ON THE OCEAN
Many of the waste which is dumped in the sea can be
food of many marine animals that the consume
On the other hand, each year, more than one million
birds and more than one hundred marine mammals die
as a result of all plastics that reach the sea
Some effects of ocean pollutionare:
Biodiversity loss
Large masses of plastic
Decrease in oxygen and acidification of water
Death and physiological changes in aquatic organisms
Ocean pollutionalso endangershuman
health
6. 4. ACTIVITIES THAT HELP TO REDUCE OCEANS’ POLLUTION
We should be all aware of the importance of the oceans in our lifes!
Nowadays, several corporations organize cleaning journeys to pick up all the
rubbish on the beaches. They tend to be groups of volunteers who try to
collect as much waste as possible. It is a good idea, but it isn’t enough.
7. a. LAWS AGAINST THE OCEANS’ POLLUTION
It is based on the purpose of replace disposable
products. These types of goods will be banned in the
market if there are other available alternatives.
The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have reached a
interim political agreement. This ambitious laws proposed by the European
Commission try to end the problemof the waste in the oceans.
It is is the case of:
- Plastic and cotton sticks
- Plastic cutlery and plates
- Chopsticks to remove
beverages
- Chopsticks for balloons...
For other products, the regulations are
aimed at limiting their use and reduce
the consumption.

Avoid using plastic bags,
you can use paper bags
instead
9. 5. TRASH PROCEDURE
a. Trash on the beach
Garbage bag: 2 kilos
➔Organic 0’14 kilos
➔Light plastic 0’19 kilos
➔Paper and paperboard 0’02 kilos
➔Others 1’65 kilos
➔Packaging, glass and hazardous waste, nothing
Percentages:
➔Organic:
0’14·100 = 7%

➔Light plastic:
0’19·100 = 9’5%

11. ● HAIR GUM: reuse, because it’s not broken and can be used again.
● BANANA SKIN, SHELLS (ORGANIC): reuse, because can be used as a fertilizer for the field.
● WOOD: reuse, we can use it as fuel for the bonfire.
● CERAMICS: recycle, because they are small pieces and can’t be used for anything else.
● PLASTICS: recycle, because they are already broken and small plastics.
● PAPER AND PAPERBOARD: recycle, because are in poor condition to reuse.
● ROPES: reuse, to tie anything.
● FOAMS: recycle, because they don’t serve us for anything else.
● SOCK: reuse, because we can make it serve with another utility, such as cleaning cloth.
c. Recycle or reuse
12. This image consists of seeing the reality of
today.
The flower that lies between a waste beach
and a sea of plastic gives us some hope and
conveys that we must change our way of
living and think about our actions in order to
see in the future more than one flower in the
sea.
