1. Dance
In dance performances the mood is often a huge factor in portraying the emotion of the piece.
Semiotics are hugely influential in providing a true showing of the characters emotions. For
example, in Desh the use of bright white lighting produces a pure feel creating a feeling of
nature to it. Also, they used a series of blues and greens to create the plains of India and
replicate nature. However, in the performance of Billy Elliot which is ballet we see a
different take on the usage of the colours and lighting. For example, in the right image below
we see the blue lighting "spoon feeding" the audience as he begins to sing electric. It also
replicates the negative emotion felt by the miners.
Music gigs
In music performances setting the mood is pivotal to creating a contextual atmosphere for the
performance. It is used to create an atmosphere that the audience usually reacts to. For
example, at a rock concert the lighting would tend to be dark reds and blue mixed with
oranges. This is because it creates a satanic feel to the performance and gets the audience
moving. However, in opera we would see more golds and whites in order to produce a classy
and sophisticated feel to the performance.
Retail
In retail lighting is used in order to attract the attention of the consumer to the product up for
sale. With the competitive nature of retail being huge at the minute the ability to be able to
get an audience attention is a big factor. The lighting is used to make the product stand out
against all the others. Also, it is now used to create a homely feel or a fashion show feel with
products being lit in order to fit a context.
