Our summer intern, Aiden, has been busy reviewing the various apps on the Magic Leap App Store. Below is a summary of his experience so far along with his slides documenting his findings.
"This summer I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be an intern at Whitespace Solutions. I jumped at the chance because it would give me an opportunity to gain experience in the workplace and let me work with tech that I wouldn’t be able to work with otherwise.
One of the first projects that I was given involved the Magic Leap, an augmented reality headset that Whitespace Solutions is exploring for their government clients and whose Creator Edition was recently released. I was asked to create a deck identifying and grading all of the apps that are currently available on the Magic Leap. This effort would help the Chief Research Officer determine which apps he could use to give demonstrations to government clients to help them understand this new technology.
I decided to review the apps across six categories, represented graphically from 1-10: functionality, mechanics, graphics, my personal opinion, demo-worthiness, and an overall score.
• Functionality represents how well the app works and feels;
• Mechanics represents how many AR & Magic Leap abilities the app uses;
• Graphics are simply how nice everything inside the app looks;
• My opinion is a subjective summary of what I thought about the app;
• Demo-worthiness is how well it would serve as a demo of the Magic Leap;
• And the overall score is a combination of the above categories into a single rating.
Additionally, I included three text sections (Overview, Description, & Experience) to help provide more context for each app. In the Overview section, I give a short explanation of the app to help orient readers. In the Description section, I try to provide some basic information about the app. Lastly, in the Experience section, I detail my interactions with the app and what I thought about it, including uses of Magic Leap mechanics such as room scanning, hand recognition, object persistence, or haptic feedback.
I went through all twenty-one free apps (as of June 12) and there were some great ones, like Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders, Star Wars Project Porg, and Angry Birds FPS. There were certain apps in which there was a missed opportunity for more interesting features, like CNN and Cheddar. Others were not as good, like Crane Craze and Abduction, which felt like more of a developer test than anything else.
In conclusion, working with the Magic Leap was a great way to start my internship and I created the below PowerPoint deck that could be helpful to people who want to know what is currently available. The Magic Leap itself is an interesting AR headset, and while the field of view is small and the controls are sometimes a pain, it’s a fun experience and I can easily imagine it being a good platform for a variety of applications."

Overview
Robots appear out of portals on the walls and
ceiling and the player is tasked with shooting
them. The player’s controller becomes a ray
gun, which vibrates when it hits something
virtual, and the hand without the controller acts
as a shield.
Experience
Fun all around but can be frustrating when it lags. Is
immersive and the graphics are great, I could play it
for hours. The difficulty increases over time, and level
select is a pain, making it not perfect for demos.

The player’s controller becomes a slingshot
with which they fling birds at a building in order
to destroy it and the pigs inside. Really takes
advantage of the 3D aspect as hitting the
structure from multiple angles is occasionally
necessary.
Brings the classic mobile game into AR, and
with it, increases the strategy. A very simple
game with mediocre graphics that only uses a
little of what Magic Leap has to offer,
nevertheless it is a fun experience.

In Crane Craze, the player must control a crane
boom to pick up parts of a building and attempt
to stack them without letting any part touch the
street. If they are successful, more land
becomes available and their score increases.
This game is fun for about ten minutes, then becomes
boring, annoying and frustrating. The building pieces
move so easily, and a small nudge can easily knock
them into the street. It isn’t demo-worthy because it
doesn’t use many Magic Leap mechanics

Uses Screens to display the news. Almost like
watching television except you can put the
screen anywhere that you want. Weather,
politics, current events and more.
I feel that there is a missed opportunity to take
advantage of Magic Leap’s capabilities. While I realize
that it would be difficult, adding 3D, or making it
interactive would be interesting. At this point, all it is a
mobile TV.

Allows the user to place furniture that they
could purchase at Wayfair in their house via AR
so they can see if they like it before they buy it.
It scans the room to look for surfaces and
includes furniture for walls and tabletops.
This is a pretty good app for showing off the magic
leap. It uses a couple of features in a useful way.
However, the scanning ability isn’t perfect and there
isn’t a very big selection of items in the catalog. On top
of that, the interface isn’t the best.

AMBEO lab is a well-made app that allows
the user to manipulate sound in a 3D virtual
environment. One can record and create
sounds. Then, the sounds will change based
on distance, direction, and furniture in the
way.
A great app, recording and playing with sounds is fun,
and it is a different way of using the Magic Leap’s
room scanning abilities. It was made to promote

Clocks is a simple, yet useful app that gives
the user a handful of clocks to place on walls
and tabletops around the room. All of the
clocks are functional and can be set to 24-hour
time and any time zone.
There isn’t much to say about Clocks, it does what it
says it does, although the room scanning isn’t perfect
but that is a problem with all apps. It doesn’t use many
magic leap mechanics, which prevents it from being
more demo worthy.

A game that involves taking care of a virtual
pet from the Star Wars universe. They wander
around the room and interact with virtual
objects. Every day more things unlock, and
more goals activate, that expand the
interaction with the Porg.
A cute game, reminiscent of certain web games, it is
enjoyable and features C-3PO, Chewbacca and
others. The room scanning works well and the
graphics aren’t bad, and it uses a fair amount of the
Magic Leap’s features.

A simple game, hit a ball with the racket against
the wall to score points, don’t let the ball touch the
ground too many time or you lose. The walls are
placed by the player, and a racket is overlaid on
the controller.
This game is very basic and can be easily
cheesed. It is really annoying to play in rooms
with furniture because it has no room scanning
and the ball goes right through it. The Magic
Leap’s low field of view does not help this
game either, as it is very easy to lose the ball.

RelayCars simulates a virtual RC car,
specifically a Kia Stinger GT2 that you can
drive around and change the color. It obeys
physics, and bumps into obstacles, almost like
a real RC car. The auto driving ability is a little
buggy, however.
One of the more demo-worthy apps because of its
simplicity, the room scanning works well and you can
drive the car or let it go to a location of your choice
automatically. You can even throw the car and watch it
bump into furniture.

The NBA app gives users a better view of an
NBA game. It shows stats of the players, along
with a 3D picture of the court, and the location
of the ball carrier. While the graphics are not
great, it makes watching a game a better
experience.
It took me a while to get it to work, but that could be
due to Wi-Fi troubles. It really one upped some of the
other apps that use Magic Leap screens, like CNN,
because it demonstrated things that a regular TV
cannot do.

It does what it is supposed to, the sound and motion
