3. About The Library Initiative for Health Literacy
Promotion
Southern University' s John B. Cade Library in partnership
with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), other
librarians and community partners are helping African
American communities to gain access to and use NLM
health resources for life. SU Cade Librarians Literacy for
Life project's aim is to introduce, facilitate access to and
train African Americans across generations to NLM in
general with a specific menu of three (3) NLM online
resources.

The National Library of Medicine is the world’s largest
biomedical library and a leader in research in computational
health informatics. NLM plays a pivotal role in translating
biomedical research into practice. NLM’s research and
information services support scientific discovery, health care,
and public health. NLM pioneers new ways to make
biomedical data and information more accessible; builds
tools for better data management and personal health; and
helps create a more diverse and data-skilled workforce. NLM
enables researchers, clinicians, and the public to use the vast
wealth of biomedical data to improve health.

What is an NDC code?
Each listed drug product is assigned a
unique 10-digit, 3-segment number. This
number, known as the NDC, identifies
the labeler, product, and trade package
size. The first segment, the labeler code,
is assigned by the FDA. The NDC code
can be found on the outside packaging of
medication.
