Housekeeping
Unit 5:
Accounting, Audit and control, Income from Accommodation, Public Room Rentals,
Allowances, Net sales, Expenses, Salaries and Wages, Room Employees meal, China and
Glassware, Commissions, Contract cleaning, Decorations. Dry cleaning, Garage and parking,
Guest supplies, Laundry and Dry cleaning, Linen and Linen Rentals, Printing and Stationery,
Reservation Expenses, Miscellaneous expenses.
Unfortunately , this is too vast a topic to cover in detail.
Here is what the above terms mean.
Accounting – There is a Accounting department that checks in detail the revenue and
expenditure of each department including Housekeeping
Audit and control – Audit (or checking) is a form of control used in Housekeeping. Audit is
generally done by a third party to make sure all the rules have been in compliance.
There are self audits also. Financial audit is done on a nightly basis by the night auditor that
recaps the days operation.
Housekeeping uses checklist for auditing purposes.

4. Income from Accommodations
This refers to the income or revenue generated by front office by the sale of rooms. Housekeeping
plays a key part in selling the rooms by having the room ready for sale.
Public Room Rentals
This refers to the Banquet hall and meeting rooms that rented out for function and corporate
meeting. Housekeeping has to make sure that they are kept very clean for those functions.
Allowances
This refers to credits given to the guest account in case of mistakes or errors done by the hotel.
Allowance generally reduces the guest bill.
Net sales
Definition of 'Net Sales' The amount of sales generated by a company after the deduction of returns,
allowances for damaged or missing goods and any discounts allowed.
Expenses
This are the expenditure incurred by the Hotel Housekeeping department in terms of labour
(wages), materials, supplies, equipments etc.
Salaries and Wages
This is one of the largest expenses for the Housekeeping department.
Generally, people who get paid a "salary" get their money monthly, and get the same amount each
month.
A salary usually doesn't change based on the number of hours you work.
If you get paid a "salary", you usually say things like "I make $30,000 a year."
If you get paid a wage, it usually means that you get a certain amount per hour. The more hours you
work, the more money you will make.
Room Employee Meals
This is the meals given to the Housekeeping staff either provided free or at a discounted rate in the
employee cafeteria. Most hotels serve food in the employee cafeteria.

Glassware
Contract Cleaning
Nowadays the hotels to reduce overall cost give contracts to clean the public areas, landscaping,
special cleaning projects like spring cleaning etc.
Drycleaning
This is the cleaning of fabrics in a substantially non-aqueous liquid medium. Dry cleaning removes
oils as well as many water-soluble and some insoluble materials with the help of detergents and
various other agents.
Advantage of Dry cleaning
Dry cleaning cleans clothes for which laundering is not suitable
It causes no shrinkage

Disadvantages of Dry cleaning
It is expensive compared to laundering
Many dry-cleaning solvents are harmful to health if inhaled for long durations.
Garage and parking
Hotels provide Garage or parking facilities to guests who use the hotel facilities. This could be
complimentary (Free) or there would be a daily or hourly charge for it.
Housekeeping department will maintain the cleanliness of the area.
Guest Supplies
These are the various supplies provided in the hotel room.
Like bath soap, shampoo, stationery, pens etc.
Printing and Stationery
These are the writing pads, notepads, pens, envelopes kept in the guest room for guest use. Usually
complimentary.
Reservation Expense
These are the expense incurred while getting a reservation. These could travel agent commission,
travel website charges, central reservation agency charges etc.
