Brightwood Elementary School in Greensboro, NC, recently hosted a Sock Drive. The drive was sponsored by our Student Council as a service project for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Socks were collected, sorted, and donated to the homeless with words of encouragement.

2. HELPING OUR COMMUNITY
• We decided the best way to help our community was to bring
awareness to homelessness and providing them with a basic
necessity that we all need especially during winter which is socks.
• The sock drive would also lend itself to helping our preschool with
sock puppets for their reading center.
• We also included words of inspiration bookmarks with each pair
of socks.

infomercial
during
afternoon
announcement

We even
created a
theme song to
the popular
children’s song
Baby Shark
entitled “Bring
Us Socks.” Take

6. SCHOOL-WIDE STORY TIME
During our WIDE Read at the end of the school day. The students
were able to listen to a Read-A-Loud entitled “Ducks in Socks”.
After viewing, teachers were given guided questions to help start a
conversation with students about why it is necessary to keep our
body warm during the winter.
Teachers were also able to discuss the conditions homeless people
face while exposed to the elements of outside weather.

7. PROJECT SOCK PUPPET
We even
created stories
about the
ABC’s,
Numbers,
Manners, and
other lessons.
The students also took new/used socks
to create sock puppets. The puppets
were donated to the preschool classes
at our school.
