Hebrews 13
Maud church of Christ
By Jim Bradshaw
Sunday Evening, August 17, 2014
2. Societal Morality Spiraling
Down 1Co 6:9-11 ESV Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not
inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the
sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who
practice homosexuality, (10) nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor
drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of
God. (11) And such were some of you. But you were washed, you
were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus
Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
3. God Never Changes
Mal 3:6 ESV "For I the LORD do not change…
1Pe 1:22-25 ESV Having purified your souls by your obedience to the
truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure
heart, (23) since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of
imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; (24) for "All
flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass
withers, and the flower falls, (25) but the word of the Lord remains
forever." And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
4. Let Brotherly Love Continue
Heb 13:1-3 ESV Let brotherly love continue. (2) Do not neglect to
show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels
unawares. (3) Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison
with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.
We Must Show our Love for one
Gaanl o6:t9h-e10r ESV And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due
season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have
opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are
of the household of faith.
We Must Love
Strangers Hospitality – (philonexia) love to strangers, hospitality
Gen 18:1-4 ESV And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre,
as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. (2) He lifted up his
eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him.
When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed
himself to the earth (3) and said, "O Lord, if I have found favor in your
sight, do not pass by your servant. (4) Let a little water be brought, and
wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree
We Must Remember those who
MistreaLteukd10:33 ESV But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to
where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.
Gal 6:10 ESV So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to
everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
7. Sin is Still Sin
Isa 59:2 ESV but your iniquities have made a separation between you
and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he
does not hear.
Romans 3:23; 6:23
8. Sin is Still Sin
Heb 13:4-9 ESV Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the
marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and
adulterous. (5) Keep your life free from love of money, and be content
with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake
you." (6) So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not
fear; what can man do to me?" (7) Remember your leaders, those who
spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life,
and imitate their faith. (8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today
and forever. (9) Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings,
for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods,
which have not benefited those devoted to them.
Isa 59:2 ESV but your iniquities have made a separation between you
and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he
does not hear.
9. Sin is Still Sin
Heb 13:4 ESV Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the
marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and
adulterous.
Sex outside of Lawful Marriage is Still Sin
Mat 19:3-6 ESV And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by
asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" (4) He
answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the
beginning made them male and female, (5) and said, 'Therefore a man
shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the
two shall become one flesh'? (6) So they are no longer two but one
flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."
Mat 19:9 ESV And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for
sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery."
10. Sin is Still Sin
Heb 13:4 ESV Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the
marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and
adulterous.
Sex outside of Lawful Marriage is Still Sin
Jud 1:7 ESV just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities,
which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural
desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
11. The Love of Money is Still Sin
Heb 13:5-6 ESV Keep your life free from love of money, and be content
with what you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake
you." (6) So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not
fear; what can man do to me?"
1Ti 6:10 ESV For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is
through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and
pierced themselves with many pangs.
But if we remain faithful, the
LORD will never leave, nor
forsake us.
12. Strange Teachings are Still Bad
Heb 13:7-9 ESV Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the
word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their
faith. (8) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (9)
Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for
the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not
benefited those devoted to them.
Lev 10:1-2 ESV Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took
his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered
unauthorized fire before the LORD, which he had not commanded them.
(2) And fire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and
they died before the LORD.
13. Strange Teachings are Still Bad
1Ti 1:8-11 ESV Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it
lawfully, (9) understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the
just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for
the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers,
for murderers, (10) the sexually immoral, men who practice
homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary
to sound doctrine, (11) in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the
blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
14. A Heart of Sacrifice
Heb 13:10-17 ESV We have an altar from which those who serve the
tent have no right to eat. (11) For the bodies of those animals whose
blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for
sin are burned outside the camp. (12) So Jesus also suffered outside the
gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. (13)
Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he
endured. (14) For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that
is to come. (15) Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice
of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. (16)
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices
are pleasing to God. (17) Obey your leaders and submit to them, for
they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give
an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that
would be of no advantage to you.
15. A Heart of Sacrifice
Heb 13:15 ESV Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice
of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.
Heb 13:17 ESV Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are
keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an
account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would
be of no advantage to you.
Heb 13:20-21 ESV Now may the God of peace who brought again from
the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of
the eternal covenant, (21) equip you with everything good that you may
do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through
Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
