3. A Wedding Invitation for Jesus
John 2:2 NKJV Now both Jesus and His disciples
were invited to the wedding.
DID YOU INVITE JESUS TO
YOUR WEDDING?
4. A Wedding Invitation for Jesus
Matthew 19:4-6 NKJV And He answered and said to
them, "Have you not read that He who made them at
the beginning 'MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,'
(5) and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL
LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE
JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL
BECOME ONE FLESH' ? (6) So then, they are no
longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has
joined together, let not man separate.―
5. A Wedding Invitation for Jesus
Matthew 19:9 NKJV And I say to you, whoever
divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and
marries another, commits adultery; and whoever
marries her who is divorced commits adultery.―
6. RUNNING OUT OF WINE
John 2:3 ASV And when the wine failed, the mother of
Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
7. It is A Sin to become Drunk!
1 Cor. 6:9-10 NKJV (9) Do you not know
that the unrighteous will not inherit the
kingdom of God? Do not be deceived.
Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor
adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor
sodomites, (10) nor thieves, nor
covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor
extortioners will inherit the kingdom of
God.
8. The Only Cure for a Hangover
Luke 21:34 NKJV "But take heed to
yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed
down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares
of this life, and that Day come on you
unexpectedly.
Carousing
―kraipalē‖ (surfeiting KJV) the
giddiness and headache caused by
drinking wine to excess (Thayer).
9. May We Casually Drink?
Well Jesus made wine:
John 2:10 NKJV And he said to
him, "Every man at the beginning sets out
the good wine, and when the guests have
well drunk, then the inferior. You have
kept the good wine until now!‖
Drunk
methuō - to drink to
intoxication (Strongs)
10. May We Casually Drink?
The most common word in the Greek for
wine is ‗oinos.‘ Oinos may refer to either
an unfermented (non-alcoholic) drink or a
fermented (alcoholic) drink.
Isaiah 16:10 NKJV Gladness is taken
away, And joy from the plentiful field; In
the vineyards there will be no singing, Nor
will there be shouting; No treaders will
tread out wine in the presses; I have made
their shouting cease.
However, in passages such as Rom. 14:21
and Eph. 5:18 Oinos clearly refers to an
alcoholic beverage.
11. Waterpots were roughly 20-30 gallons each:
Therefore Jesus produced: (6 times 20-30) or
120 to 180 gallons total
That‘s enough for 500 guests to each drink
about 40 ounces of wine
Remember this in addition to the fact
that the guests were already ―well
drunk.‖
May We Casually Drink?
12. Since Drunkenness is a Sin
Would Jesus tempt men to sin?
James 1:13-14 NKJV Let no one say
when he is tempted, "I am tempted
by God"; for God cannot be tempted
by evil, nor does He Himself tempt
anyone. (14) But each one is
tempted when he is drawn away by
his own desires and enticed.
13. To Participate in a Drinking
Party would be Sinful
1 Peter 4:2-3 NKJV that he no longer should live the
rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for
the will of God. (3) For we have spent enough of our past
lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked
in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking
parties, and abominable idolatries.
Drunkenness
―Oinophlugia‖ (excess of wine KJV) a
compound word form ‗oinos‘ meaning wine,
and ‗phluo‘ meaning to bubble up.
Drinking part
―Potos‖ A party where the purpose is to
drink. Does not necessary mean that you
participate to excess yourself.
15. But Christ was WITHOUT Sin
Hebrews 4:15 NKJV For we do not
have a High Priest who cannot
sympathize with our weaknesses,
but was in all points tempted as we
are, yet without sin.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV (21) For
He made Him who knew no sin to be
sin for us, that we might become
the righteousness of God in Him.
16. Ruler of Feast Not Drunk
John 2:10 NKJV And he said to him, "Every man at the
beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have
well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine
until now!‖
Barnes writes, ―This word does not of necessity mean that
they were intoxicated, though it is usually employed in that
sense. It may mean when they have drunk sufficient, or to
satiety; or have drunk so much as to produce hilarity, and to
destroy the keenness of their taste, so that they could not
readily distinguish the good from that which was worse.‖
17. Whatever He Says Do It!
Mary to Jesus, ―They have no wine.‖
James 4:2-3 NKJV You lust and do
not have. You murder and covet and
cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet
you do not have because you do not
ask. (3) You ask and do not
receive, because you ask amiss, that
you may spend it on your pleasures.
Matthew 7:7-8 NKJV "Ask, and it will be given to you;
seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.
(8) For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks
finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
18. Whatever He Says Do It!
Was Jesus rude to his Mother:
―Woman what does your concern have
to do to me? My hour has not yet
come.‖
John 2:5 NKJV His mother said to the
servants, "Whatever He says to
you, do it.‖
John 2:7 NKJV Jesus said to
them, "Fill the waterpots with water."
And they filled them up to the brim.
19. Whatever He Says Do It!
To Many Mark 16:16 Does not make
sense:
John 14:15 NKJV "If you love
Me, keep My commandments.
John 15:14 NKJV You are My friends
if you do whatever I command you.
Reminded of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 –
―wash and be clean‖; Acts 22:16
20. Saving the Best for Last
The ruler of the feast declares, ―Kept
the good wine until now.‖
Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV "Do not lay up
for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy and where
thieves break in and steal; (20) but lay
up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys
and where thieves do not break in and
steal. (21) For where your treasure is,
there your heart will be also.
21. Saving the Best for Last
For Christians the Best is saved for Last:
Matthew 19:28-30 NKJV So Jesus said to them, "Assuredly
I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man
sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will
also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of
Israel. (29) And everyone who has left houses or brothers
or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands,
for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit
eternal life. (30) But many who are first will be last, and
the last first.
