PED 212 Week 1 DQ 1 Current Issues
Current Issues. Choose a current issue to research that can be related to
providing quality physical education at the elementary school level.
Some examples of issues might be childhood obesity, budget constraints,
family / home environment, nutrition, prenatal care, lack of medical care
or other factors that either offer an advantage or disadvantage to a
child’s motor development. Review several scholarly sources that offer
information on the issue.
Include a short summary of the issue in your initial post. Also address
the following questions:
What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of this issue in regard to
motor development?
3. Is this issue a more recent concern, or has it been an ongoing issue for
many years? Explain.
Who (or what) has contributed most to minimizing the negative effects
concerning this issue?
Finally, include at least one reputable website that offers strategies
and/or resources to counter the negative effects of the issue. Explain why
you included this source.

PED 212 Week 1 DQ 2 Critical Thinking
Critical Thinking. In this discussion forum, you will examine your
critical thinking, inquiring, and communication skills as they relate to
the subject of physical education.
Questioning compels thinking and, as thinkers, you assess what you read
and incorporate knowledge with your prior understanding of the subject.
4. As part of this discussion, you will read about concepts surrounding
physical education and evaluate your previous knowledge on this
subject. Then, you will create your own question for your classmates to
answer.
Complete each of the following sections:
Section 1: KWL Chart. Before reading Chapters 1, 2, and 3, fill in the
“What I Know” and “What I Want to Know” section of the following
chart*. Then read the chapters and complete the “What I Learned”
section of the chart. You will not include the KWL chart in your
discussion post.
Section 2: Creating Your Own Discussion Question/Prompt
For your initial post, you will create your own discussion prompt based
on your own research and review of the chapter readings for this week.
Your questions need to originate from one of the concepts introduced in
Chapter 1, 2, or 3. These chapters cover a variety of issues that can be
further researched.
After reading, use your completed chart and chapter readings to
formulate a discussion prompt. Your discussion prompt should include
all of the following:

PED 212 Week 2 DQ 1 Motor Skills
Motor Skills. This discussion forum consists of three different sections.
You must complete the requirements in each section.
Section 1 (Post by Day 3):
Read Section 4.1, “Three Elements Affecting Motor Skill Performance,”
in Chapter 4 of your text. Next, use Table 3.2, “Typical gross motor
milestones,” from Chapter 3 as a guide, and the skills outlined in
Chapter 5 and 6 to complete the following chart*:Section 2 - Guided
Response (Post by Day 5):
Respond to two classmates. Review the activities and skills included on
their charts. Use one of the activities listed on their charts to create a
situational example in story form, such as a case study. Within your
story, include a complication in which they would need to adapt the
lesson. This complication can be an environmental, individual, or task-
related constraint. Environmental constraints are faulty/missing
equipment, weather, space, time, etc. Individual constraints include any
difficulty or disability that the student might encounter. A task- related
constraint includes complications incorporating the activity or lesson to
be taught. Conclude with a question as to how this lesson could be
adapted in the given situation.

Complex Skills. According to the textbook, “skill learning takes place
through a predictable and consistent sequence. It is also similar to that
of growth and development by how the rate of learning a skill is different
across people and depends on a person’s environment as well as their
previous experiences” (Hastie, 2012).
Select a complex motor skill that you are proficient at (such as bowling,
riding a bike, driving a car, jumping rope, etc.). Explain when you first
learned it and your early experiences with this skill. Try to describe how
you acquired this skill in terms of the phases discussed in Chapter 4.
Then describe the progress a learner might take as they begin to master
this same skill.

www.snaptutorial.com
Fundamental Skill Lesson Plan. You will create a lesson plan to teach a
fundamental skill for an early childhood physical education class (Pre-K
to 3rd grade). You will revise/add to this lesson plan in Week Five. To
create your lesson plan, start by reviewing and assessing that the skill(s)
in your lesson plan are developmentally appropriate by visiting The
National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE). An
example of a skill is: ”Demonstrate the relationship of under, over,
behind, next to, through, right, left, up, down, forward, backward, and in
front of by using the body and an object.” Then, review Table 7.3 in
Chapter 7 for appropriate activities.
Your lesson plan should include the following components:
Title Page
Section 1: Lesson Information Identify the following:
Grade level (specify what age/grade)
Estimated level of developmental stage for this age/grade
Number of students
Fundamental skill to be taught
9. State standard (see the list of NASPE standards and indicate which
state)
Section 2: Lesson Introduction
Provide a brief description of the lesson
Create a student learning objective: (e.g. “As result of this lesson,
students will be able to
demonstrate _________”.)
Describe your system for classroom management and student grouping
(e.g. class rules, consequences, rewards, and organization of the class
during the activity)
Describe the equipment needed and the environment (e.g. classroom,
gym, outdoors, etc.)
a. Reference page
Include at least one outside resource.
Your title page, lesson plan, and reference page should be formatted in
APA style as outlined in the Ashford
Writing Center. The lesson plan will be two to three pages, in addition to
the reference and title pages.

Assessment. Assessing the mastery of a skill is an important part of any
lesson. Many fundamental motor skills are combined to create the more
complex motor skills. If a fundamental skill is not mastered, it will affect
the development of other skills as well.
In this discussion forum, you will explain how you would observe,
document, and assess a fundamental motor skill. Choose a fundamental
motor skill that you will assess. It can be a skill previously discussed in
this course or one that has not been discussed.
First, provide a brief explanation of the skill and activity used to
practice the skill. List all of the aspects of the skill that you will be
looking for during the lesson, including the student’s body and space
awareness and quality of movement (e.g., balance, movement from one
place to another, moving more than one body part at a time).
Then, discuss how you plan to observe and document during the lesson.
Finally, include a rubric that you have created to assess the mastery of
this skill. You can find a guide for assistance with rubrics in Week Three
of your online course.

The Four S’s. Read the following scenario that describes the game of
Red Rover (an activity in the hall of shame!). Reflect on how this game
violates the Four S’s as outlined in Chapter 8: safe, success, satisfying,
and skill appropriate.
Two teams face each other across half of a basketball court and take
turns calling players over from the opposite side. After Team A decides
who it wants to challenge, the members join hands to form a long chain
and call for Team B to “send Frank over.” Frank then runs as fast as
possible to either break through or dive under the chains formed by
Team A. If Frank fails to break through, he becomes part of Team A. If
he succeeds, he returns to his team together with the two players of
Team A who were at the point he broke through. Team B now calls over
a player from Team A.

Play vs. Sports. This week you will reflect on the debate of organized
sports vs. unstructured free play. Over the years, parents, teachers, and
18. researchers have weighed the advantages and disadvantages of each in
consideration as to what is most appropriate for young children.
In this discussion forum you will research the issues and then offer the
pros and cons for both organized sport and unstructured free play in the
following categories:
Cost of equipment and participation Safety and injuries Relevance
within a school environment Inclusion of children with special needs
Developing relationships within the community Home/school
connection

Professional Associations. Many professionals choose to join national
associations that offer support and information in their field. For this
discussion, you will research and analyze the benefits of a national
organization that offers support within the physical education domain.
Choose an association to review and discuss how an educator could
benefit from the various professional development opportunities,
publications, resources, advocacy programs, and events that they offer.
19. Also include an explanation as to why you would or would not choose to
become a member of that particular organization.
Visit the AAHPERD Associations page for some examples to help you
get started. However, these are not the only associations you may choose
from.
