3. History of the
University of
In the early 19th century, a group
prominent New York residents from the
class of merchants, bankers, and
traders established the university on
April 18, 1831. These people believed the
city needed a university designed for
young men who would be admitted
based on merit, not social class. In 1832,
NYU held its first classes in rented
rooms in four-story Clinton Hall,
situated near City Hall. Finally the
university was situated in the Greenwich
Village, a section of Manhattan. One of

NYU has embarked on the project of becoming a
Global Network University. This institution is
one of the foremost private, global research
institutions in the United States. In 2010 a new
portal campus was opened, NYU Abu Dhabi and 10
international academic centers in Africa, Asia,
Europe, North and South America.
