1. Green day- Longview video analysis
The video starts with an establishing shot, which shows the setting of the video,
the décor shows a very disorganized house setting of a stereotypical young adult,
it could also be compared to his mindset as the songs narrative goes on to
explain his frustration. The lighting in the
shot is low-key and shows the dark tone
of the rest of the video which links to the
genre. His costume looks scruffy and
messy which fits with the décor. Within
the décor is an old couch, dirty blinds, a
dead plant this represents his dead hopes
and aspirations.
It cuts to next the scene, which is of a
semi naked woman dancing on the
television. There are no lyrics by this
point. This scene links with the male gaze
theory as it focuses on the body of the
woman. It also links to the later narrative
within the song, which is about boredom
and masturbation. Watching the
television shows his boredom and watching the woman shows how the song
links to masturbation.
A high angle shot is used to look down at
the lead singer and a coffee table full of
what looks to be junk. The high angle shot
is used to make the lead singer look
insignificant and insecure. The table looks
to be full of drug paraphernalia which
links to the later narrative of drug use in
the songs lyrics.
A close-up is used of the lead singers face and the microphone he is using. This
shot is used to show the anger and
frustration on his face. The lyrics at this
point are ‘I change the channel for an
hour or two.’ This links to the other scene
where he is watching the television out of
complete boredom, it also links to his
frustration as there is nothing on the
television and it is annoying him. This
shot is also used to show how he looks, he
looks as if he fits into the ‘punk image’ as he has green hair, piercings and a
tattoo. This links to genre and makes it easily identifiable.
2. A long shot of the band is used. This fits into the convention of a punk rock band
as they are three-piece who play
their own instruments, this links
into the DIY attitude of the punk
subculture. The costume they are
wearing also links into this, the
clothing looks of poor quality and
as if they don’t care what people
think of them. The lighting is low to
possibly show how the housing
they are living is of low quality,
which again leads into the DIY attitude.
A medium shot is used to show the bassist
and the drummer in a small room
together, it can be assumed that this room
is a bathroom by the size. This links into
the DIY attitude that is a staple of the
punk rock genre as it looks as if they are
making music at home.
A fade is used to transition into this
shot. This fade could be used to show
how that he is so bored that all the
days are melting into one and he can’t
differentiate between them. It could
also link to drug use as he is so stoned
that he loses track of time.
A medium close up is used to show the lead singer stabbing his couch and
destroying his home. This is used to
show how his boredom has gotten too
much for him and he has had to resort
to destruction to satisfy him. The
destruction could also link to the
genre as it focuses on rage and anger
through music.
