Realism And The Setting Of The Great Gatsby By F. Scott...
In any of the play or the drama written by any author or narrated by a narrator, certain factors are
affecting the nature and the story line of the play being written or narrated. The mind of the author
or a narrator is just like a glass house (Harold Bloom). Whichever light falls on it; it is illuminated
by that color glowing in that particular manner. In the critical evaluation of any story or play, the
thing to be understood that holds immense importance is the realism and the setting. Realism and
the setting can be literary defined as the social environment around the author or the narrator that
carves the words out of his mind and ideas out of his heart. It is always seen that the circumstance
and surroundings impart a very strong color on the story line and characters.
Any story line is built around a plot or an axis. For an author or narrator, nature or surrounding is the
biggest gift that seeds the idea in his mind that is further nourished by his words and fed by his pen,
and the end fruit is passed to the audience to enjoy and cherish the sweetness and taste of it. This
simply means that surrounding hold immense importance for the play as it is the one causing the
inception and it is the one causing the completion tinging it with its flavor and taste. Sometimes it
has been seen that the movements or scenarios going around in the country make the writer write
something. Sometimes it's the sense of patriotism due to problems in the countries. (Black Matter)

The Breaking Point
Everyone has a breaking point. I was close to mine. The walls felt like they were closing in around
me. I was forced to walk in a single file line like a first grader. The only light was from the small
openings in the rigid cement walls. My legs were screeching in pain. I have climbed hundreds of
steps and it was unknown how many more. None of us had been here before. All I could tell was
that we were going up fast and the ground was becoming farther away. The fear of plummeting to
your death was a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I remind myself not to look down but it was
inevitable. I had to look. I would have not continued if it was not for the fact that you had to go up
in order to go down. I knew that even though it was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was left in my pajamas standing at the door with just the knowledge that breakfast was in an hour.
I had no idea what we were going to do today. This left my mind to wander all of the things we
could do, compiling a list in my head. After breakfast, we left the hotel and used our map to try and
navigate where the subway was. It turns out the subway was only two blocks away, but thanks to my
uncle it took us close to a half hour to get there. If we didn't look like tourists, I don't know what
does. I mean it was clear we didn't speak Spanish, but when you have adults holding up maps and
screaming directions at each other it was pretty clear we were tourists, lost tourists. We thought
getting to the subway was hard, but the real challenge was figuring out which line to take.
Meanwhile, I had no idea where we were going. It was not like I could help much because I knew a
very small amount of Spanish. Fifteen minutes of arguing later, we finally figured out that we have
to take the red line and get off at the sixth stop. The train ride was quiet. The only sound was the
hum of the train's engine. When we got to our stop we got off quickly and climbed up steps that
placed us back into reality. We were once again united with the busy streets of Barcelona.

"Mom, where are we going? Are we almost there?" I cried.
"Well, why don't you see for yourself," she called out.

Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Sparknotes
Way of the Peaceful Warrior
For my book project I read the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman. Set in Berkeley
California, Dan Millman a college student struggles to find the part of himself that has always been
missing. One night while out walking from his dorm, Dan comes across a gas station and a strange
man that is soon to turn his life upside down. This man, known as Socrates, shows Dan a side of
existence that only few people had ever seen. To become a warrior like Socrates and have the mind
to not allow the regular struggles of life to control a single part of you. Socrates takes Dan in and
tries to create a warrior from a young star athlete with the ignorance of every other human on this
earth. Through his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This way of separating these two simple words allows one to think about what the book is saying,
and to figure out if there is truth to what the book says. The difference between the mind and brain is
not something most think about in their regular lives. But as I read each word I found truth to what
Socrates was saying. You read this book and try to realize the hidden messages being put across. The
message between the mind and brain is to not let your brain be attacked by random useless thoughts.
In other words, to not let your, `mind', get in the way of your brain. People think millions of useless
thoughts each day. Without these thoughts a persons brain would be clear and their emotions would
be easier to control. Dan tries to explain to Socrates that he will control his mind and change himself
in the process. The main character is a young man who has been set to see the world the way most
have. He is ignorant when it comes to seeing the other side of the picture. Readers can relate to him
because they share a lot of the same qualities and ignorance. After reading this book I looked at
class notes which might represent this book and I found a relation between almost all the concepts
and people. The first being Ludwig and his interpretation on language. When Ludwig talks about
language and how it limits our mind and keeps us from looking outside the box is a prime example
of how

Dan Millman's Dream In The Peaceful Warrior
A journey to fulfil his dream, Dan Millman in the Peaceful Warrior, does everything he can after a
tragic accident to make it into the Olympic games for gymnast. For him to train well, he seeks the
help from an old man he calls Socrates. Socrates teaches him his ways, and shows him how to take
the trash out of his mind to focus. However, Dan faces many troubles during his journey to
accomplishing his hopes, dreams and plans, one main theme in this movie.
The first event in the Peaceful Warrior that is an example of hopes, dreams and plans is Dan is
always dreaming about going into the Olympics. Dan thinks about training and competing more
than anything else. He does not think about himself and his much as he does training. Dan practices
hard every day, pushing himself and his limits, to make the special "triple flip" said no man has ever
done. "This is what I was born to do." (Dan). Dan believes he was always meant to be a gymnast,
because he loved it as a child. Dan plans what he is going to do to make it to the Olympics. ... Show

Socrates shows Dan how to clear his head and focus on himself more than his dream. He tells Dan
to "take out the trash" in his brain. Socrates shows Dan that he does not notice everything that goes
on. "There is never nothing going on. There are no ordinary moments." (Socrates). Dan learns that
when he clears his head, he can see everything that is happening. Socrates teaches Dan many other
helpful lessons throughout the movie. Dan plans to use the knowledge Socrates has shown him
when he competes in the

Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Sparknotes
The first resemblance from our course material and Way of the Peaceful Warrior was right away in
the book while I was reading the preface. Dan describes how his years before meeting Socrates, he
had been sleeping and was dreaming that he was awake. This comes from our second lesson where
you can be going about your day or life but are you truly awake? Are you living each day to the
fullest, taking everything in minute by minute, not wishing each Monday away? I can relate to Dan's
meaning fully when he says Socrates had to teach him how to live, who knew? Dan thought he was
living a good life, he had friends, was a good athlete and did well in school, but he went through the
motion every day. I too do this as well, in high school Monday's were

Peaceful Warrior Conflict
"The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to
enjoy less". As americans, people believe if we experience more we are happier. In the film,
Peaceful Warrior, Dan shows the audience this is not entirely true. Most people find happiness not
seeking more. But enjoying less or things they currently have. Happiness is found within. Dan
begins to seek happiness within his self. However, in Peaceful Warrior, Dan's life begins to turns
into self vs. alter ego conflict as he seeks for happiness. An example of self vs. alter ego conflict is
shown at the beginning of the film where you see Dan's attitude isn't positive. Dan acts conceited.
He acts as if he doesn't care about his other teammates. It's obvious because he starts dating his best
friend's girlfriend. "You can live a whole lifetime never being awake" (Dan). As he begins to have a
little bit too much fun he looses his friends and meets an old wise man named, Socrates. Although
Dan may seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is told that he can not participate in the Olympics. As he focuses on his new beginning, he
continues to trains and apologizes to his companions. "The journey is what brings you happiness not
the destination" (Dan). After showing his coach what he can do, the coach lets him back on the
team. And in summary Dan and the team wins. By focusing on the positives in life, he gets a
positive outcome. In conclusion, Dan began to be happy and live his life without his negative alter
ego. After learning his lesson and being told he could no longer compete in the Olympics, he seeks
happiness in what he loves most. Letting go of his alter ego only made him focus on the positives in
life and what he could h ave in the future. He becomes more focused and hard working to get what
he wants most, the girl and the gold medal. By seeking happiness in what he already has, he notices
there's a lot he was missing

What Is The Alter Ego In Peaceful Warrior
Self vs. Alter Ego The film Peaceful Warrior, directed by Victor Salva, is based on Dan Millman and
his journey to become the best. However, Dan struggles to become the best because of his alter ego.
Socrates tries to teach Dan that his ego is a weakness and could get him hurt. Dan eventually does
get hurt but even then, his stubborn alter ego gets in his way. He must learn to let the stubborn side
of himself go if he wants to succeed. The first event in Peaceful Warrior that shows Dan has a
stubborn alter ego is when he is in the gym practicing. His coach, Coach Garriek is complimenting
everyone in the gym. Then Dan attempts the triple flip before landing but he fails. Coach Garriek
tries to explain to Dan that the trick has never been done before and he ... Show more content on

The second event is when Dan gets into a motorcycle accident. Dan is riding his bike fast down the
road. Then a car pulls out in front of him and he crashes. He lands hard on his leg and he is rushed to
the hospital. "You did not just break your leg, you shattered it." The doctor wants to explain it to
Dan but he is completely in denial about the situation. Dan should not have been riding his
motorcycle so fast down the highway. He did it because his stubborn alter ego made him think he
could. The third and final example is when Dan finally talks to Coach Garriek after six months of
recovery. He sees the coach walking by and stops him. Dan tries to negotiate with Coach Garriek on
when he can come back. Coach Garriek wants Dan to come back but he cannot because of his leg.
"Dan, I talked to your doctors, you will never do this again." After the coach said that Dan stormed
off. He goes into the trophy room and stands there and stares at the trophies. He uses his cane that he
has after the accident and smashes all the trophies. Dan should be patient and wait on the healing
process. Dan should let go of his stubborn alter ego if he wants to succeed.

Analysis Of Peaceful Warrior
Dan v.s His Ego Dan's pride and ego gets to the best of him. It makes Dan do things that are out of
his comfort zone. What if Dan had the chance to change that, would he take that opportunity to
become better? In the movie, Peaceful Warrior Dan Millman had the opportunity to change himself
for the better. Dan had the chance to rethink his ways, his actions and do the right things.
Throughout the movie it was Dan v.s his alter ego, but that changed when he meets a man named
Socrates. In the beginning of the movie Dan lets his ego get to the best of him while he was
practicing his flips and tricks on the rings. Dan was trying to practice landing a triple flip on the
rings for his big finisher of his routine. While Dan was on the rings everything was rushing through
his head, he was not focused, he was not determined to land the flip. Dan thought he could make the
flip not matter what, but he did not know that his ego started to come out and take over. For Dan's
ego coming out he was not able to land the triple flip that he wanted to land. When Dan did not
make the flip, and fell on his face on the mate underneath him the coach, Coach Garrick said
something like "You have a big ego, stop with the ego, so you can become better and make the
landing." What the coach is trying to tell Dan is that is ego is way too big, he needs to let it go, and
his ego is getting in the way of him landing the triple flip and become better at what he loves to do.
Dan starts to think about what Coach Garrick tells him and then Dan meets an old man named
Socrates that helps him start to let go of his ego and his old ways. Later, in the movie Dan starts to
clear his mind and listens to what Socrates has to say, but his ego still comes and goes. Dan starts to
what Socrates tells him to do without getting mad or upset, but his ego still floats around with him
because he still did not take out the trash that's in his head, but during practice one day he did take
out the trash. Dan finally learned how to clear his mind, during tryouts one day at the California
University gym, he got up on the pommel horse and did not think about anything but just did. Later
that night Dan went back to the service station where

The Rise Of Women In France Essay
The Rise of Women in French Society
During the Middle Ages, French society, along with the rest of Europe, revolved around the warrior
class. In order to gain land and power nobles gave their services in the military and lived violent
lifestyles. Treatment toward women during this period was harsh. "In a society of landed
nobility dispersed fairly loosely across the country in their castles and estates, the likelihood of a
preponderance of the man over the woman and thus of a more or less unconcealed male dominance,
is very great." (Elias, Page 325.) Men beat their wives and typically had little respect for them.
Marriage was based not on love but on increase in influence and wealth. ... Show more content on

The bourgeoisie had grown and taken power away from the warrior class of nobility. "Thereby
the equilibrium is slowly established which gives optimal power to one man, the central ruler. The
kings during this era created a luxurious palace court system that brought families and nobility
together in close proximity. Under the watchful eye of society, men were less prone to physical
violence and the importance of the woman grew. "Social life" began to grow and more
importance was placed upon literature and the fine arts, skills that women had long been schooled
in. In the past, it was the women and clergy who had been taught to read and write, as there had not
been much importance for it during the days of wars and political unrest. "For the master of
the court, his function as knight and military leader was still the primary one; his education too was
that of a warrior centered upon the wielding of arms. For just this reason the women surpassed him
in the sphere of peaceful society." (Page 326–7.) At the end of the Middle Ages, women
became assets to their families. The battlefield for power had changed from bloodshed to skill. A
daughter who possessed great social graces could bring a family closer to the monarchy and insure
it's members a greater ranking in court life.
Emphasis began to be placed on beauty and love, an emotion virtually void in the warrior society.
Troubadour poetry and minnesang rose, creating a

Summary Of ' The ' Silent '
Motionless, like a wounded prey cornered by its predator, I finally understood the definition of fear.
To be victimised as the villain of the story. To be discriminated as the plague behind all creation's
problems. To be stereotyped as the face of the oppressors. The fear was so overwhelming and
overpowering, as if my stomach was rotting away, with whatever dignity that remained of me being
eaten by blood–thirsty parasites. I could only pray for the Earth beneath me to crack wide open and

Happiness and excitement permeated the crowd, cheering for what I could only guess being the
imaginative floats, the thundering tempo played by the bands, and the exhilarating surroundings
itself. The breath–taking spectacle of the confetti engulfing the sky like the miraculous sight of a
murmuration, struck the city into a collective awe, bringing a smile to everyone's faces. Amidst the
enjoyment, our group leader was approached by a homeless woman, who requested for spare change
in order to buy water to quench her thirst. The group leader gave twenty euros to the homeless man
like it was just a simple day–to–day routine. "TWENTY?" was the confound reaction of the group
and I, astonished at the fact that what we deemed as a fortune, was simply a mere piece of
replaceable paper for our group leader. A man so humble yet so profound, wearing nothing but a
simple white ankle–length garment and worn–out sandals. With a long black beard that he stroked at
times, the group leader did not pay attention to the juxtaposition of his appearance. Giving the
slightest of thoughts to his outward appearance and how society portrayed him and his lack of 'style',
but instead paid close attention to his inward appearance and his

Peaceful Warrior Hero's Journey
If man was to choose between ambition or self–improvement, what would be one's choice? Majority
of man would choose both and actually praise their decision. But the other's not so much, it is a very
difficult task to balance both. But one must realize that it takes dedication and hard work to even
come close to succeeding and balancing them both. The balance between self–improvement and
ambition is the main focus in Peaceful Warrior. In the movie, Dan must go through physical and
mental damage due to his stubbornness and big–headedness. Even though Dan's bad side caused
him lose fellow comrades and respect, his ambition and self–improvement made him learn, succeed,
and regain all of it back. The first event in "Peaceful Warrior" that is an example of ambition and
self–improvement is seen when Dan realizes that his injury won't stop him from fulfilling his dream.
Once he becomes physically and mentally stronger, he begins to not only perform or compete like
he was before but he also was beginning to see the world in a different viewing. Dan goes back and
forth with Socrates saying "Where are you? Here. What time is it? Now. What are you? This
moment." He then begins to show flashes of his greatness again and soon succeeds. Obviously, his
ambition and dedication lead him to this point. The second event in "Peaceful ... Show more content

similarities in all of these facts for example in their training they both started off as a child. As they
trained and grew stronger they both were eventually promoted to become a knight or a samurai and
studied their religion. Some differences between the two are that the child is to become a samurai by

Shoved away at the back of the cupboard on the highest shelf I lay there waiting to be unexpectedly

I've been in this cupboard for about two months now; occasionally I am treated to the sight of

At this point in time, extrinsic goals are the central focus in Dan's life. He believes that he will be

The Seafarer And Beowulf
"The Seafarer", an elegy from the Exeter Book Elegies, discusses the idea that the Anglo–Saxon
way of life is fleeting, and the only way to overcome this is living a life free of sin. The Anglo–
Saxon epic Beowulf continuously digresses into stories whose purpose is to teach the main character
how to behave in order to become a heroic figure. In the excerpt from first work mentioned, the
speaker believes that soon the "pomp" and "lordly fame" associated with the warrior culture of the
Anglo–Saxon world will be a thing of the past (82, 85). Conversely, in the Beowulf excerpt, which
tells the story of the bad King Heremod, the attitude of the speaker is that warrior culture is a central
part of life. The speaker of "The Seafarer" excerpt explains the benefits of being a man who is
"humble" and "strong minded" (108, 109). On a similar note, the speaker of the Beowulf excerpt
condemns those who are selfish "he gives no golden rings" and "angry" (1749). Both the poem and
the epic discuss the ideal way that a man should conduct himself. The importance of these lessons in
"The Seafarer" is to live an everlasting life in heaven while in Beowulf the reason is to gain glory on
earth and be remembered.
In the pair of excerpts from "The Seafarer" and Beowulf, the speakers are convinced of the urgent
need to offer advice to their respective audiences because of a recent or coming change.
The speaker of "The Seafarer" believes that soon the warrior way of life will no longer be

Book Exploration of State of War: The Violent Order of...
Book Exploration State of War: The Violent Order of Fourteenth Century Japan by Thomas Donald
Conlan tracks the events in Japan between 1336 and 1392. Conlan provides his wisdom on how
state and society operated in the Nanbokucho period through various source documents portraying
the warriors not by their romanticized "knights of the round table" ideal, but rather showing that
while there were alliances of connivence, they could be broken just as easily as they were made,
revealing that pragmatism was paramount above all else. State of War is comprised of eight
chapters. It begins with a characterization of a common warrior, Nomoto Tomoyuki, who pledged
allegiance to Ashikaga Takauji. Extracting from a detailed petition for reward ... Show more content

Thereupon he boasted that he had shot to death (igoroshitaru zo) the enemy general with a single
arrow, undoubtedly a notable feat. By contrast, those who died lingering deaths as a result of arrow
wounds were described as being 'killed' (uchishi)," (Conlan 59).
Conlan also takes on the assertion that nobushi were some rag–tag bunch of guerrilla fighters,
arguing rather the term nobushi "designates scattered skirmishers regardless of their social origins,"
(Conlan 70). Hence, it is a battle tactic and not a particular class of warrior. We then proceed to the
concerns of logistics, positing that the wars of the fourteenth century couldn't have continued
without a market economy, yet, during protracted fighting, it was hopeless to keep armies equipped
without tax–collecting systems.
"The bakufu, controlled by Askikaga Takauji, passed a far–reaching law in 1352 that authorized
shugo to earmark half of a province's revenue for military provisions (hanzei), thereby linking the
machinery of tax collection to the procurement of provisions. This law allowed commanders to
control enough cash to bankroll their forces, thereby solving the endemic deficiencies of supply, and
contributing, in the process, to the sudden appeal of the shugo office among the ambitious," (Conlan
85).
It was through this that provincial military governors were able to subordinate warriors below them
to the will of their command. In the fourth chapter Conlan deals with the medieval caste system,

Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Character Analysis
That Was No Accident
In the book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Dan experiences an accident on his motorcycle at his
home in Los Angeles. However, that accident was not accidental, it was part of a larger plan and was
going to happen whether he thought he could prevent it or not.
During Dan's training to become a warrior Socrates often gave Dan advice that either did not make
sense at the time or Dan did not take seriously. On a particular day as Dan was saying good bye to
Socrates for a couple days when he told Socrates of his plans Socrates offered piece of advice that
was frightening to him. Socrates had said many things to him at that time and one of them was
"You'll be tested severely before you're done." Part of Dan's plans while he was in Los Angeles was
to buy a motorcycle that he could ride back to San Francisco. One evening after Dan had bought his
motorcycle he was riding down an avenue as he approached an intersection he saw a car facing him
that was trying to turn left. As he slowed down the car started to turn right in front of him. The

Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Essay
The book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, impacted me in a positive way because it
shows how to correctly live life, control emotions, and future changes on decisions you make. In the
book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Socrates taught many things the fuqto Dan: future will not be
what it is expected to be, something bad could lead to something good, control emotions and be
happy of what you have, and do not make any decisions that could lead to bad things because future
depends and changes on decisions made today. These are the things that Socrates taught Dan in the
book and also impacted me in a positive way. Socrates was right when he said that future will not be
what you will expect it to be. People think that what they want will happen, but in reality the
chances are 50–50. Some might get lucky sometimes and some will be disappointed. We should not
depend on the future, instead we should live in the present time, without making any goals because
the result could be either positive or negative. Once when I was in high school I wanted to take a

The way of the peaceful warrior Essay
Joseph Campbell, a well know mythologist states in "the Power of Myth" that "a hero is someone
who has given his or her life to something greater than oneself" (Campbell 151). Campbell also
indicates that there are two types of hero deeds. One type is a physical deed, "in which the hero
performs a courageous act in battle or saves a life" (Campbell 151). The second is a spiritual deed,
"in which the hero learns to experience the supernatural range of human spiritual life and then
comes back with a message" (Campbell 152). In his story "The way of the peaceful Warrior", Dan
Millman tells us about his experience with a white bearded man known as Socrates who takes him
on many adventures and gives him knowledge on life. Although ... Show more content on

Dan is naïve and egoistic telling Socrates in what way can he possibly be useful him. Reluctant Dan
takes Socrates as a joke but what he doesn't know is that Socrates without Dan knowing already has
become his mentor. Socrates is trying to help Dan change the way he lives by seeing the world for
what it really is "the world out there" "is a school, Dan. Life is the only real teacher. It offers many
experiences, and if experience alone brought wisdom and fulfillment...I can help you learn from
experience to see the world clearly, and clarity is what you desperately need right now. You know
this is true, but your mind rebels; you haven't yet turned knowledge into wisdom" (Millman 14).
Dan accepts the hero's journey but knows he will face difficult obstacles. Socrates explains to Dan
that his biggest predicament is his mind and how he is a prisoner of the mind and it's illusions. Once
Dan breaks free from his mind's grip he will understand everything Socrates has been talking about.
Therefore, Socrates offers Dan the tool of meditation, the only weapon that can free him from the
mind "The warrior uses the sword of meditation with skill and understanding. With it he cuts the
mind into ribbons. Slashing through thoughts to reveal their lack of substance" (Millman 75). After
practicing so much Dan finally makes a breakthrough he crosses the threshold he conquers the art of
meditation and breaks free from his mind or so he thinks. Dan

Samurai And Knights Dbq Essay
Knights in their shining armor and samurais with their katana, both distant from each other yet are
strikingly similar. In Europe, the warriors were called knights, they wore iron armor and carried
long, iron swords. The Knight's duty was to protect their lord, and show loyalty to him and his king.
In Japan, the warriors were called samurai, they carried a katana which quickly slashed down their
enemies. They went around their life peacefully until needed by their daimyos for war. Critics may
say that samurai and knights are very different however, they are actually more similar. For
example, knights and samurai have similar codes of honor. Also, knights and samurai have very

However, just because these two warriors think differently about death, it doesn't mean that they

Chikamasa state, " He has held out his right glove to God...One day you are born/ you die the next–/

Sometimes the longest and toughest journeys are inside one's mind; and although others cannot
notice them instantly, they change personalities profoundly. Dan, the main character, is a gymnast–
student for Berkley University, California. His life seems perfect, he has everything he wants:
friends, girls, good grades, his talent and passion for gymnastics and the strive to go to the
Olympics. Until he meets Socrates. Socrates is a gas station attendant who leaves a mark in Dan's
memory right from the beginning. When they start to get to know each other, Dan understands that
he's nothing but a fool, and that he needs Socrates's guidance to wake up and reach a deeper state of
knowledge, a state of enlightenment.

But the most important out of body experience in his journey was one of the last times he met
Socrates, on the mountain. When Soc helps him reach enlightenment and he finds himself dead (in
an out of body experience), on the floor of a cave on the top of the mountain he had climbed right
before with Socrates and realizes that "his life, too, had been an illusion, a problem, nothing more
than a humorous incident when Consciousness had forgotten itself". His out of body experiences are
fundamental for the outcome of his journey, they allow him to look at his weaknesses and learn
about himself, understand that he has a long way to go.
Parables throughout the book provide Dan images and ideas for meditation or introduce him to a
new change in his journey. The moment when he understands Socrates is only towards the end,
when his teacher goes in the mountains to rescue and help him with his final task, climbing the
mountain, symbol for his ego and adversities. He remembers a parable he had never understood
before that moment: "A saintly woman was walking along the edge of a cliff. Several hundred feet
below, she saw a dead mother lion, surrounded by crying cubs. Without hesitation, she leaped off the
cliff so that they would have something to eat". This shows what Socrates would figuratively be
willing to do to help Dan growing up. Sometimes one thinks they know their friends, but they don't

According to document A, "The rigorous training of samurai began in childhood." and document B,

Warrior is a book by Dan Millman where he talks about his journey from being a self–absorbed

Dan Millman starts the story from his college days in Berkeley University where somehow along

This movie also reminds me while competition has the power to bring out the best in everyone, too
much of anything is bad. When wanting to come out on top becomes the reason you are still
working towards the goal, it becomes a serious problem. Dan's continued resistance and
defensiveness to Socrates' teaching points is a validation of the human inability to break old habits
until the human being admits that there is something wrong and there is a need for change. But what
compounds the human problem to break old habits is the fear of change. This is another reality that
the book managed to acknowledge. People don't like to change their way of thinking because how
they think, albeit destructive, is familiar. It seems what the book is trying to imply at this point is
that people are disillusioned into believing that what is familiar is good for

Analysis Of ' Beowulf ' By William Shakespeare
When reading Beowulf, there are many different passages with many different contexts. The
passage I chose to analyze is from is in the lines 1384–1391 which reads "we sir, do not grieve. It is
always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us, living in this
world, means waiting for our end. Let whoever can, win glory before death. When a warrior is gone,
that will be his best and only bulwark". From a warrior's point of view, he (Beowulf) is explaining
that they fight for glory and the legacy that a warrior strives to leave behind instead of living to get
to a better afterlife. I feel that in this passage, it explains much of the book in a tiny passage. Being
that the whole book is focused around glory and mortality. During this paper I will breakdown this
passage into bits and pieces explaining my thoughts of it as a whole. In the first two sentences it
reads "we sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning."
Historically, in other fictional and Non–fictional books we find that an important focal point and
also turning point in some stories, happens whenever someone who is loved, passes away and the
result is avengement. In this passage, Beowulf makes this small speech, among many, whenever the
temptress demon, Grendel's mother, kills the king's advisor. It is Beowulf's way of getting the king
ready for battle instead of watching him mourn the loss of a friend. In the next sentence he

Warrior In The Middle Ages
Introduction
When we hear the word warrior, we think of someone who has great strength, endurance, and
agility. A warrior can be defined as either a male or female who exhibits one or more of these
characteristics. But, can we truly classify a warrior as a hero? Looking into the Middle ages, there
are some great warriors, male and female, who have graced us with their presence in Medieval
History. In fact, some that come to mind are: King Arthur, Joan of Arc, and Robin Hood.
Many women in the Middle ages are not seen as warriors, this title was given to the men. Even
though, many women during this time; despite the gender difference, "were included in the ranks of
many mercenary and national armies" . These women were fearless fighters and defended their
homesteads and country if warranted. Women who took on the role as warriors, were seen in a total
different light as "natural women", they were expected to "abandon their true identities and take on a
more ruthless, and masculine role" . In fact, many women began to dress like men in order to fight
alongside them in battle. As the times began to change, so did the ways of thinking. As more women
began to join the battlefields, "the more they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Men were called Knights and they were referred to as "mounted or armored soldiers who generally
rode horses but, this was seen to be connected to nobility and social status" . But, the questions that
remain unanswered are, how is a man distinguished or noble enough to be called a knight? Does
being a Knight entitle a man to be classified as a warrior first? In the early part of the Middle ages,
"any warrior who distinguished himself in combat may have been considered a knight" . But, later in
the Middle ages, the title became less prominent because in order to be labeled as a knight, the
warrior had to demonstrate great courage and strength in battle and that in itself, qualifies a warrior

life is important. Living in the moment and knowing that all things happen for a reason can improve
one's life and let them enjoy every second of it. "The Peaceful Warrior" shows viewers that they
should focus more on the present and not as much on the future. The movie shows this by giving the

Dan did not realize that he had been living in the future and in the past, but when he did, he started
succeeding in sports and started building more meaningful relationships. This was an impactful way
of showing people how focusing on the present can positively impact one's life. The story is packed
with advice on how to live life and how to succeed in life. Dan was taught to focus on every
moment. At one point in the story an old man Dan met told Dan, "You're missing out on everything
that's going on... The only thing that matters is this moment, here,now."(Millman,2006) After the
talk, Dan started to focus on the present and began to improve in his sport, gymnastics. The story
has an effect on many people's emotions because Dan shatters the bone in his leg and is unable to
practice and compete for months in his favorite sport. Countless people can connect to this because
they are athletes or people who have jobs they cannot do anymore due to an injury or a medical
condition they have. This story shows those people that while they are not able to do some of the
things they love, they can still succeed and be happy. By focusing on their present feelings they will
not dwell on what they used to love, but find a new love they can do or practice recovering so they
can get back to where they used to be. The old man shows Dan how to succeed and not only focus

Anyone that has attended De Queen schools in the last century can answer this question without

As a result of Mrs. Smith's 9th grade English class, I'm currently in college having to constrain
myself to write papers. The significance in the beginning of my hatred for writing was going to

compelling it to be very consequential for the inevitable as a whole as well. Therefore, assuming
that I had let this adversity continue to frustrate me, I wouldnt be as successful as I am anticipating

important relationships could be lost. Both movies are conveying the same message but they are
doing so in different dispositions. "Click" was a comical movie while "The Peaceful Warrior" was
more of an inspirational and influential movie, they both portrayed the message of living life to the
fullest and putting effort into what is important in life. Although the films do not have the same
exact theme and mood; they are similar because they both do an exceptional job of informing the
audience to live life to the fullest because every moment in life is an important one.
Both films show that living in the present and not worrying about the future or focusing on the past
can make life more enjoyable and prevent people from overlooking the important activities in life.

Samurai Code
Over the span of thousands of years, countries have refined and honored the traditions of their
culture. The Samurai code is an ancient practice from Japan, sometimes called Bushido. Samurai
originally meant "one who serves", which refers to men of noble birth. These warriors obliged by a
strict code of conduct, where they practiced loyalty, courage, self–control, respect, honesty,
benevolence, justice, and above all else, honor. In addition, appreciation and respect of life was
essential for a true warrior. Authors of Japan saw the merit of this tradition and desired to honor its
esteem. Specifically, author Ryunosuke Akutagawa honors the Samurai code of Japan in his short
story, "In a Grove"
"In a Grove" advocates for the Samurai code in Japan at the time the story was developed in 1922.
The Samurai code summoned the best from people and the society flourished in the 1920s.

When the characters in the story are dishonored, they perform seppuku, in accordance with the
Samurai code. Seppuku was the voluntary act to die with honor instead of falling into the enemy's

courage, self control, and honor. When the sacred bonds of marriage between Takehiro and his wife

herself. After being dishonored, she follows the Samurai code and performs seppuku to salvage the
remainder of her honor. Seppuku shows the extent of the Samurai code in the Japanese culture and

argument that "In a Grove" honors the Samurai code of

Realism And The Setting Of The Great Gatsby By F. Scott...

  • 1. Realism And The Setting Of The Great Gatsby By F. Scott... In any of the play or the drama written by any author or narrated by a narrator, certain factors are affecting the nature and the story line of the play being written or narrated. The mind of the author or a narrator is just like a glass house (Harold Bloom). Whichever light falls on it; it is illuminated by that color glowing in that particular manner. In the critical evaluation of any story or play, the thing to be understood that holds immense importance is the realism and the setting. Realism and the setting can be literary defined as the social environment around the author or the narrator that carves the words out of his mind and ideas out of his heart. It is always seen that the circumstance and surroundings impart a very strong color on the story line and characters. Any story line is built around a plot or an axis. For an author or narrator, nature or surrounding is the biggest gift that seeds the idea in his mind that is further nourished by his words and fed by his pen, and the end fruit is passed to the audience to enjoy and cherish the sweetness and taste of it. This simply means that surrounding hold immense importance for the play as it is the one causing the inception and it is the one causing the completion tinging it with its flavor and taste. Sometimes it has been seen that the movements or scenarios going around in the country make the writer write something. Sometimes it's the sense of patriotism due to problems in the countries. The only light was from the small openings in the rigid cement walls. My legs were screeching in pain. I have climbed hundreds of steps and it was unknown how many more. None of us had been here before. All I could tell was that we were going up fast and the ground was becoming farther away. The fear of plummeting to your death was a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I remind myself not to look down but it was inevitable. I had to look. I would have not continued if it was not for the fact that you had to go up in order to go down. I knew that even though it was not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I was left in my pajamas standing at the door with just the knowledge that breakfast was in an hour. I had no idea what we were going to do today. This left my mind to wander all of the things we could do, compiling a list in my head. After breakfast, we left the hotel and used our map to try and navigate where the subway was. It turns out the subway was only two blocks away, but thanks to my uncle it took us close to a half hour to get there. If we didn't look like tourists, I don't know what does. I mean it was clear we didn't speak Spanish, but when you have adults holding up maps and screaming directions at each other it was pretty clear we were tourists, lost tourists. We thought getting to the subway was hard, but the real challenge was figuring out which line to take. Meanwhile, I had no idea where we were going. It was not like I could help much because I knew a very small amount of Spanish. Fifteen minutes of arguing later, we finally figured out that we have to take the red line and get off at the sixth stop. The train ride was quiet. The only sound was the hum of the train's engine. When we got to our stop we got off quickly and climbed up steps that placed us back into reality. We were once again united with the busy streets of Barcelona. ... "Mom, where are we going? • 9. Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Sparknotes Way of the Peaceful Warrior For my book project I read the book Way of the Peaceful Warrior, by Dan Millman. Set in Berkeley California, Dan Millman a college student struggles to find the part of himself that has always been missing. One night while out walking from his dorm, Dan comes across a gas station and a strange man that is soon to turn his life upside down. This man, known as Socrates, shows Dan a side of existence that only few people had ever seen. To become a warrior like Socrates and have the mind to not allow the regular struggles of life to control a single part of you. Socrates takes Dan in and tries to create a warrior from a young star athlete with the ignorance of every other human on this earth. Through his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This way of separating these two simple words allows one to think about what the book is saying, and to figure out if there is truth to what the book says. The difference between the mind and brain is not something most think about in their regular lives. But as I read each word I found truth to what Socrates was saying. You read this book and try to realize the hidden messages being put across. The message between the mind and brain is to not let your brain be attacked by random useless thoughts. In other words, to not let your, `mind', get in the way of your brain. People think millions of useless thoughts each day. Without these thoughts a persons brain would be clear and their emotions would be easier to control. Dan tries to explain to Socrates that he will control his mind and change himself in the process. The main character is a young man who has been set to see the world the way most have. He is ignorant when it comes to seeing the other side of the picture. Readers can relate to him because they share a lot of the same qualities and ignorance. After reading this book I looked at class notes which might represent this book and I found a relation between almost all the concepts and people. The first being Ludwig and his interpretation on language. When Ludwig talks about language and how it limits our mind and keeps us from looking outside the box is a prime example of how ... • 13. Dan Millman's Dream In The Peaceful Warrior A journey to fulfil his dream, Dan Millman in the Peaceful Warrior, does everything he can after a tragic accident to make it into the Olympic games for gymnast. For him to train well, he seeks the help from an old man he calls Socrates. Socrates teaches him his ways, and shows him how to take the trash out of his mind to focus. However, Dan faces many troubles during his journey to accomplishing his hopes, dreams and plans, one main theme in this movie. The first event in the Peaceful Warrior that is an example of hopes, dreams and plans is Dan is always dreaming about going into the Olympics. Dan thinks about training and competing more than anything else. He does not think about himself and his much as he does training. Dan practices hard every day, pushing himself and his limits, to make the special "triple flip" said no man has ever done. "This is what I was born to do." (Dan). Dan believes he was always meant to be a gymnast, because he loved it as a child. Dan plans what he is going to do to make it to the Olympics. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 17. Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Sparknotes The first resemblance from our course material and Way of the Peaceful Warrior was right away in the book while I was reading the preface. Dan describes how his years before meeting Socrates, he had been sleeping and was dreaming that he was awake. This comes from our second lesson where you can be going about your day or life but are you truly awake? Are you living each day to the fullest, taking everything in minute by minute, not wishing each Monday away? I can relate to Dan's meaning fully when he says Socrates had to teach him how to live, who knew? Dan thought he was living a good life, he had friends, was a good athlete and did well in school, but he went through the motion every day. I too do this as well, in high school Monday's were ... • 21. Peaceful Warrior Conflict "The secret of happiness, you see, is not found in seeking more, but in developing the capacity to enjoy less". As americans, people believe if we experience more we are happier. In the film, Peaceful Warrior, Dan shows the audience this is not entirely true. Most people find happiness not seeking more. But enjoying less or things they currently have. Happiness is found within. Dan begins to seek happiness within his self. However, in Peaceful Warrior, Dan's life begins to turns into self vs. alter ego conflict as he seeks for happiness. An example of self vs. alter ego conflict is shown at the beginning of the film where you see Dan's attitude isn't positive. Dan acts conceited. He acts as if he doesn't care about his other teammates. It's obvious because he starts dating his best friend's girlfriend. "You can live a whole lifetime never being awake" (Dan). As he begins to have a little bit too much fun he looses his friends and meets an old wise man named, Socrates. Although Dan may seem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "The journey is what brings you happiness not the destination" (Dan). After showing his coach what he can do, the coach lets him back on the team. And in summary Dan and the team wins. By focusing on the positives in life, he gets a positive outcome. In conclusion, Dan began to be happy and live his life without his negative alter ego. After learning his lesson and being told he could no longer compete in the Olympics, he seeks happiness in what he loves most. Letting go of his alter ego only made him focus on the positives in life and what he could h ave in the future. • 25. What Is The Alter Ego In Peaceful Warrior Self vs. Alter Ego The film Peaceful Warrior, directed by Victor Salva, is based on Dan Millman and his journey to become the best. However, Dan struggles to become the best because of his alter ego. Socrates tries to teach Dan that his ego is a weakness and could get him hurt. Dan eventually does get hurt but even then, his stubborn alter ego gets in his way. He must learn to let the stubborn side of himself go if he wants to succeed. The first event in Peaceful Warrior that shows Dan has a stubborn alter ego is when he is in the gym practicing. His coach, Coach Garriek is complimenting everyone in the gym. Then Dan attempts the triple flip before landing but he fails. Coach Garriek tries to explain to Dan that the trick has never been done before and he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He lands hard on his leg and he is rushed to the hospital. "You did not just break your leg, you shattered it." The doctor wants to explain it to Dan but he is completely in denial about the situation. Dan should not have been riding his motorcycle so fast down the highway. He did it because his stubborn alter ego made him think he could. The third and final example is when Dan finally talks to Coach Garriek after six months of recovery. He sees the coach walking by and stops him. Dan tries to negotiate with Coach Garriek on when he can come back. Coach Garriek wants Dan to come back but he cannot because of his leg. "Dan, I talked to your doctors, you will never do this again." After the coach said that Dan stormed off. He goes into the trophy room and stands there and stares at the trophies. He uses his cane that he has after the accident and smashes all the trophies. Dan should be patient and wait on the healing process. • 29. Analysis Of Peaceful Warrior Dan v.s His Ego Dan's pride and ego gets to the best of him. It makes Dan do things that are out of his comfort zone. What if Dan had the chance to change that, would he take that opportunity to become better? In the movie, Peaceful Warrior Dan Millman had the opportunity to change himself for the better. Dan had the chance to rethink his ways, his actions and do the right things. Throughout the movie it was Dan v.s his alter ego, but that changed when he meets a man named Socrates. In the beginning of the movie Dan lets his ego get to the best of him while he was practicing his flips and tricks on the rings. Dan was trying to practice landing a triple flip on the rings for his big finisher of his routine. While Dan was on the rings everything was rushing through his head, he was not focused, he was not determined to land the flip. Dan thought he could make the flip not matter what, but he did not know that his ego started to come out and take over. For Dan's ego coming out he was not able to land the triple flip that he wanted to land. When Dan did not make the flip, and fell on his face on the mate underneath him the coach, Coach Garrick said something like "You have a big ego, stop with the ego, so you can become better and make the landing." What the coach is trying to tell Dan is that is ego is way too big, he needs to let it go, and his ego is getting in the way of him landing the triple flip and become better at what he loves to do. Dan starts to think about what Coach Garrick tells him and then Dan meets an old man named Socrates that helps him start to let go of his ego and his old ways. Later, in the movie Dan starts to clear his mind and listens to what Socrates has to say, but his ego still comes and goes. Dan starts to what Socrates tells him to do without getting mad or upset, but his ego still floats around with him because he still did not take out the trash that's in his head, but during practice one day he did take out the trash. Dan finally learned how to clear his mind, during tryouts one day at the California University gym, he got up on the pommel horse and did not think about anything but just did. • 33. The Rise Of Women In France Essay The Rise of Women in French Society During the Middle Ages, French society, along with the rest of Europe, revolved around the warrior class. In order to gain land and power nobles gave their services in the military and lived violent lifestyles. Treatment toward women during this period was harsh. "In a society of landed nobility dispersed fairly loosely across the country in their castles and estates, the likelihood of a preponderance of the man over the woman and thus of a more or less unconcealed male dominance, is very great." (Elias, Page 325.) Men beat their wives and typically had little respect for them. Marriage was based not on love but on increase in influence and wealth. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The bourgeoisie had grown and taken power away from the warrior class of nobility. "Thereby the equilibrium is slowly established which gives optimal power to one man, the central ruler. The kings during this era created a luxurious palace court system that brought families and nobility together in close proximity. Under the watchful eye of society, men were less prone to physical violence and the importance of the woman grew. "Social life" began to grow and more importance was placed upon literature and the fine arts, skills that women had long been schooled in. In the past, it was the women and clergy who had been taught to read and write, as there had not been much importance for it during the days of wars and political unrest. "For the master of the court, his function as knight and military leader was still the primary one; his education too was that of a warrior centered upon the wielding of arms. For just this reason the women surpassed him in the sphere of peaceful society." (Page 326–7.) At the end of the Middle Ages, women became assets to their families. The battlefield for power had changed from bloodshed to skill. A daughter who possessed great social graces could bring a family closer to the monarchy and insure it's members a greater ranking in court life. Emphasis began to be placed on beauty and love, an emotion virtually void in the warrior society. Troubadour poetry and minnesang rose, creating a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To be discriminated as the plague behind all creation's problems. To be stereotyped as the face of the oppressors. The fear was so overwhelming and overpowering, as if my stomach was rotting away, with whatever dignity that remained of me being eaten by blood–thirsty parasites. I could only pray for the Earth beneath me to crack wide open and swallow me into an eternal abyss– away from this trembling terror. It was the perfect setting for a perfect day. Amidst the enjoyment, our group leader was approached by a homeless woman, who requested for spare change in order to buy water to quench her thirst. The group leader gave twenty euros to the homeless man like it was just a simple day–to–day routine. But the other's not so much, it is a very difficult task to balance both. But one must realize that it takes dedication and hard work to even come close to succeeding and balancing them both. The balance between self–improvement and ambition is the main focus in Peaceful Warrior. In the movie, Dan must go through physical and mental damage due to his stubbornness and big–headedness. Even though Dan's bad side caused him lose fellow comrades and respect, his ambition and self–improvement made him learn, succeed, and regain all of it back. The first event in "Peaceful Warrior" that is an example of ambition and self–improvement is seen when Dan realizes that his injury won't stop him from fulfilling his dream. Once he becomes physically and mentally stronger, he begins to not only perform or compete like he was before but he also was beginning to see the world in a different viewing. Dan goes back and forth with Socrates saying "Where are you? Here. What time is it? Now. What are you? This moment." He then begins to show flashes of his greatness again and soon succeeds. Obviously, his ambition and dedication lead him to this point. The second event in "Peaceful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Either way results in the end of my life. Bundled away where no one can see, Richard is the only one who knows where I am. I play with his thoughts and guilty conscious everyday making him fear every knock at the door. Richard continues to hide me from his wife; all I am to him is a bit of fun and extra income. I wish I had a helpful purpose in life but I am what is known to many as nothing but a "life destroyer." The popular opinion towards me is a negative one to say the least. I'm not much to look at plain, white and simple but I have an unimaginably wild effect on people. Mind numbingly magic. I've been in this cupboard for about two months now; occasionally I am treated to the sight of daylight, usually on a Thursday night as that's when Richard parties. His wife is away at work all week and does not return until the Friday night which leaves her to clean up his mess when she comes home. I see the sick and tired look on her face as she walks through the door to the mess that has been left by care free Richard. She's fed up with his thoughtless actions. I've seen her deteriorate over the past few weeks, I don't know if she'll put up with it any longer. But then again what do I know; I ruin people's lives all the time. I'm a useless piece of filth. The Seafarer And Beowulf "The Seafarer", an elegy from the Exeter Book Elegies, discusses the idea that the Anglo–Saxon way of life is fleeting, and the only way to overcome this is living a life free of sin. The Anglo– Saxon epic Beowulf continuously digresses into stories whose purpose is to teach the main character how to behave in order to become a heroic figure. In the excerpt from first work mentioned, the speaker believes that soon the "pomp" and "lordly fame" associated with the warrior culture of the Anglo–Saxon world will be a thing of the past (82, 85). Conversely, in the Beowulf excerpt, which tells the story of the bad King Heremod, the attitude of the speaker is that warrior culture is a central part of life. The speaker of "The Seafarer" excerpt explains the benefits of being a man who is "humble" and "strong minded" (108, 109). On a similar note, the speaker of the Beowulf excerpt condemns those who are selfish "he gives no golden rings" and "angry" (1749). Both the poem and the epic discuss the ideal way that a man should conduct himself. The importance of these lessons in "The Seafarer" is to live an everlasting life in heaven while in Beowulf the reason is to gain glory on earth and be remembered. In the pair of excerpts from "The Seafarer" and Beowulf, the speakers are convinced of the urgent need to offer advice to their respective audiences because of a recent or coming change. Book Exploration State of War: The Violent Order of Fourteenth Century Japan by Thomas Donald Conlan tracks the events in Japan between 1336 and 1392. Conlan provides his wisdom on how state and society operated in the Nanbokucho period through various source documents portraying the warriors not by their romanticized "knights of the round table" ideal, but rather showing that while there were alliances of connivence, they could be broken just as easily as they were made, revealing that pragmatism was paramount above all else. State of War is comprised of eight chapters. It begins with a characterization of a common warrior, Nomoto Tomoyuki, who pledged allegiance to Ashikaga Takauji. Conlan also takes on the assertion that nobushi were some rag–tag bunch of guerrilla fighters, arguing rather the term nobushi "designates scattered skirmishers regardless of their social origins," (Conlan 70). Hence, it is a battle tactic and not a particular class of warrior. We then proceed to the concerns of logistics, positing that the wars of the fourteenth century couldn't have continued without a market economy, yet, during protracted fighting, it was hopeless to keep armies equipped without tax–collecting systems. "The bakufu, controlled by Askikaga Takauji, passed a far–reaching law in 1352 that authorized shugo to earmark half of a province's revenue for military provisions (hanzei), thereby linking the machinery of tax collection to the procurement of provisions. This law allowed commanders to control enough cash to bankroll their forces, thereby solving the endemic deficiencies of supply, and contributing, in the process, to the sudden appeal of the shugo office among the ambitious," (Conlan 85). It was through this that provincial military governors were able to subordinate warriors below them to the will of their command. However, that accident was not accidental, it was part of a larger plan and was going to happen whether he thought he could prevent it or not. Way Of The Peaceful Warrior Essay The book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman, impacted me in a positive way because it shows how to correctly live life, control emotions, and future changes on decisions you make. In the book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, Socrates taught many things the fuqto Dan: future will not be what it is expected to be, something bad could lead to something good, control emotions and be happy of what you have, and do not make any decisions that could lead to bad things because future depends and changes on decisions made today. These are the things that Socrates taught Dan in the book and also impacted me in a positive way. Socrates was right when he said that future will not be what you will expect it to be. People think that what they want will happen, but in reality the chances are 50–50. Some might get lucky sometimes and some will be disappointed. We should not depend on the future, instead we should live in the present time, without making any goals because the result could be either positive or negative. The way of the peaceful warrior Essay Joseph Campbell, a well know mythologist states in "the Power of Myth" that "a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something greater than oneself" (Campbell 151). Campbell also indicates that there are two types of hero deeds. One type is a physical deed, "in which the hero performs a courageous act in battle or saves a life" (Campbell 151). The second is a spiritual deed, "in which the hero learns to experience the supernatural range of human spiritual life and then comes back with a message" (Campbell 152). Once Dan breaks free from his mind's grip he will understand everything Socrates has been talking about. Therefore, Socrates offers Dan the tool of meditation, the only weapon that can free him from the mind "The warrior uses the sword of meditation with skill and understanding. With it he cuts the mind into ribbons. Slashing through thoughts to reveal their lack of substance" (Millman 75). The passage I chose to analyze is from is in the lines 1384–1391 which reads "we sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. For every one of us, living in this world, means waiting for our end. Let whoever can, win glory before death. When a warrior is gone, that will be his best and only bulwark". From a warrior's point of view, he (Beowulf) is explaining that they fight for glory and the legacy that a warrior strives to leave behind instead of living to get to a better afterlife. I feel that in this passage, it explains much of the book in a tiny passage. Being that the whole book is focused around glory and mortality. During this paper I will breakdown this passage into bits and pieces explaining my thoughts of it as a whole. In the first two sentences it reads "we sir, do not grieve. It is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning." Historically, in other fictional and Non–fictional books we find that an important focal point and also turning point in some stories, happens whenever someone who is loved, passes away and the result is avengement. In this passage, Beowulf makes this small speech, among many, whenever the temptress demon, Grendel's mother, kills the king's advisor.
