The Social Construction Of Gender Essay
The physical body has been seen as many things both positive and negative. It can be thought of as the temple which houses the soul or can be
seen as entrapping, like a cage of flesh. More often it seems that the body, especially women's bodies, are looked at in more complicated ways than
the bodies of men. As I grew up, it began to feel more and more like my body, and the bodies of other women, did not actually belong to us like we
believed. Through my Women's Studies class I have gained more knowledge on the body as a political object. In this essay I will examine six
different articles with the similar theme of women's bodies, the expression of those bodies and how by using feminism as a political standpoint they gain
power and ownership of their bodies. The first article is "The Social Construction of Gender" by Judith Lorber. In this essay she states that sex and
gender is constructed through the society in which we live and that, "Gender is so pervasive that in our society we assume it is bred into our genes"
(Lorber, 64). Lorber's article takes the standpoint that physical gender expression is such an important topic to individuals because when the
conventions of gender are shifted, "we feel socially dislocated" (65). An example of this is when people who are not used to gender shifts encounter a
"transvestite," or in modern terms a transgender person, their perceptions are disrupted. If someone does not express physical gender "normally" with
their bodies–i.e. a

Anorexia In Today's Society
Being skinny has been America's greatest beauty ideal for decades, a societal standard pressured upon women. In our current society, the media
expects women to look a certain way. However, the media's interpretation of an ideal body is so warped and distorted that many women are attempting
to attain an unrealistic physical appearance that will never be possible. Most models within the fashion industry are thinner than 98% of American
women (Lippey). When models are photoshopped and put in magazines, completely unachievable body goals are displayed everywhere. Even models
suffer from substantial expectations–– 64.1% of models have been asked to lose weight by their agencies ("Model Scouts"). Models can be perceived
as perfect, epitomes of beauty, and yet they too are unable to reach their own agency's demanding requirements. These unhealthy and toxic standards
have been placed upon a tall pedestal that no one can achieve. According to the NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), there has been "a
rise in incidence of anorexia in young women ages 15 to 19 in each decade since 1930" ("Get The Facts"). Damaging and negative concepts are
established during childhood, forcing adolescent girls to believe that if they can't fit into... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to many news sources, a recent series of studies have shown that when overweight individuals are exposed to fat shaming, they suffer from a
result opposite to the intended outcome. Rather than feeling motivated to lose weight, many of the participants in the study felt stressed, upset, and
ended up overeating (Robinson). These studies reveal that fat–shaming someone is an ineffective and useless tactic that won't help the obesity
epidemic in the end. Even if some obese people are able to diet and lose weight, 97% of dieters gain back all of their lost weight within three years

The DREAM Act Movement
On the other hand, I also believe that the DREAM Act movement also has its own reasons for an immigrant to be out as undocumented in the US,
aside from visibility purposes and opening up a community to form a collective identity for the movement. According to Liana Gamber–Thompson &
Arely M. Zimmerman "'being in the shadows' is worse than being a public activist because, if he were ever deported his entire network of activists and
allies would know (202). Also, according to Zimmerman, he has noted that "coming out narratives have been employed well beyond LGBTQ
movements, which members of the fat acceptance and disability rights movement also embracing the concept" (197). Zimmerman's observation
signifies that the intersectionality that exists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But now under a new presidency and a new administration, wherein undocumented very much feel threatened and fear of the tomorrow for valid
reasons, such as the first DREAMer, Manuel Montes, having already been deported back to Mexico. There is no longer this big celebration of
"coming out" campaign, but rather going back to the "shadows" and conceal. Although, the protests keep occurring, they have morphed into other
forms to secure safety, such as the national 'Day Without Immigrants' that took place everywhere in the country on February 16th, 2017, in which
people who identified as immigrants would not go to work or would stop doing any other activity that is part of their daily routine. The intersection
between the immigrant and LGBTQ+ movement helped DREAMers to have an official voice, despite they remaining unofficial in a nation that was
build by immigrants. And while the LGBTQ+ movement still embraces "coming out" very dearly every 11th of October as 'National Coming Out Day,'
the DREAM Act has moved on from that phase in their movement tactics and has adopted others, mostly due to the contingencies of todays'

Eating Disorders : A Young Woman Sits At The Table
A young woman sits at the table, her untouched food unnoticed by her peers. Besides, what is the significance of one or two skipped meals? Another
young woman slips away after dinner and shuts the bathroom door. The hiss of the running shower drowns out the sounds of her purging. Is something
an issue if it goes unseen? There are some who would brush these questions aside. However, negative eating attitudes and behaviors have escalated into
widespread suffering of eating disorders. In fact, the National Institute for Mental Health reported that 25% of all college students are victims of either
anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as "Ana", is an eating disorder characterized by extreme restriction or
complete avoidance of food. On the other hand bulimia, nicknamed "Mia", is distinguished by binging and purging. These disorders are far from
insignificant, because they are much more than a few skipped meals and unseen purges. Eating disorders, which have become a deadly epidemic, are
fed by unrealistic social expectations, are encouraged by firmly rooted pro "Ana" and "Mia" communities, and are often found coinciding with other
mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, both of which are common among college students. Society is a finicky critic. Around every corner
there is an advertisement or magazine cover offering a basis for beauty. This beauty is skinny. It is flawless skin, slender thighs, and flat stomachs.

Reflecting Body Images from American Culture
Sara Brown 12–7–05 Eng 101 MW Isbell J Reflecting Body Images from American Culture Currently in America Culture there is a prevailing desire

(Stearns Pg. 72) Dieting soon became natural for women and the sexuality was less modest. Obese women were becoming ridiculed for being
overweight, literature aimed at the very groups being insulted, women were the clear targets. "Are you aware that fatness has destroyed your sex
appeal and made you look older, somewhat like a buffoon whom people are inclined not to take seriously in any area or on any level."(Stearn Pg.
83, 16) Entries such as this were written in books such as Murray Siegel (1971), Think Thin or Glamour, Glucose and Glands by Frank J. Wilson
(1956). This time period was also when women were stepping into the workforce with great strides and if the woman was over weight, she was
looked upon as "unreliable" and "lazy". (Stearns) Women became an object of mockery, an example of no self–discipline and social failures if they
were not thin. From the mid nineteen hundreds to present times the media has greatly influenced society's acceptance on body image. Even today,
women are still mocked for being obese. Heavier women are a continued target in today's society by magazines containing headlines such as "How to

Media Coverage Of Childhood Obesity
Media coverage contributes to how childhood obesity is framed and stigmatized in Canadian society. The media contributes to changes in popular
culture, which can affect how the dilemma of childhood obesity is viewed and addressed. Several forms of media, including campaigns, social media,
and the news help to construct popular opinions when looking at the issue. The views provided by different media platforms and organizations help to
frame the problem of childhood obesity, and address the problems associated with the dilemma. First, media coverage of childhood obesity can be seen
from organizations such as the Childhood Obesity Foundation. The organization's purpose is "...to lead a societal shift toward healthy eating and active
lifestyles to promote childhood healthy weights and the resulting physical and emotional impacts" (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The mission
statement promotes the idea that childhood obesity could cause unhappiness and sickness for children, and that society needs to change in order to
address the issue. A section on the website addresses the current obesogenic environment of society, which it describes as "...places that encourage
people to eat unhealthily and not exercise enough" (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The foundation frames society as a negative environment
that encourages unhealthy behaviors, requiring changes to a more health–focused society. Furthermore, the website has a section regarding the
complications of childhood

Discrimination And Body Acceptance In Society. “Why Are
Discrimination and Body Acceptance in Society "Why are so many people discriminative against other people's bodies?" (Kelli Jean Drinkwater)
Why is it anyone's business how others choose to live their lives and how they look? One of the most pervasive and yet ignored discriminations in
our society is due to weight, size and body image. As a society, we should be respecting one another as individuals instead of judging each other
superficially. Keyboard Commandos on social media sites are constantly criticizing others for being too big, too thin, too lazy, and too everything. The
internet trolls will say it is because they are "concerned" for them. They sometimes act like they are medical professionals who know the medical

Schummer, and Selden, H.) All people have body images, and they stress about if and how much they will fit in with what's considered "normal,"
"acceptable," or "attractive" based on how they feel about themselves or how others react when they see them. Anna Lavis states that "As a person
grows and especially when they hit their adolescent years, body image becomes a huge part of their self–esteem and self–image." ( Eli, K., and
Ulijaszek, S.) This is where discrimination comes in, because of social media like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and others that provide us
the anonymity to judge one another. Human Diseases and Conditions says that "Nowadays there is too much focus on physical appearance that it is
causing body image problems, and that women and young girls are especially affected by this as they are constantly bombarded with images of how
they "should" look. (Batten, P. Schummer, and Selden, H.) "It has been argued that within a patriarchal society, women have been traditionally
disempowered due to the physical 'inferiority' of the female body." (Whitehead, K., & Kurz, T.) People with average bodies look at movie stars,
internet "celebrities", and models in magazines and then think of themselves as "fat" compared to the images they see. This is leading to a large
number of young people embracing the cult–like "religion" of participating in anorexic and bulimic habits while their bodies are still growing.

Beauty And Beauty Standards
Moreover, many popular clothing and beauty brands have perpetrated the idea of beauty standards with their advertisements and use of models.
American Eagle Outfitters, one of the most popular clothing brands among teenage girls, states on their bags, "The Real You is Beautiful", and their
ads feature the phrase "The girl in this photo has not been retouched." Those this may appear to an encouraging message, the messages are placed
next to young, tall, and thin models. Though items such as freckles or tattoos are not photoshopped away, the models still display certain key
characteristics. In this, the brand is sending the message that the real you is beautiful, but only if the "real you" appears a certain way. This holds true
for many brands that feature the same type of women, a clear absence of plus–sized models. Similarly, Victoria's Secret, one of the most popular
lingerie brands, is well known for their selective model–picking process and the beauty standards the models are held too. (Bahadur). In this
advertisement for Victoria's Secret, a popular lingerie and clothing store, ten eerily similar models are lined next to each, with the words "The Perfect
'Body'' overlaid. The models in these photos all possess similar qualities: young, tall, slim–waisted, long–legged, and possess flawless complexions.
Though the phrase "perfect body" may be intended to describe the fit of the bra, it is quickly associated with the appearance of the models. The

Fat Women In Grace Nichols's Fat Black Woman
Being fat and being woman is more than just a physical appearance or characteristic that describe a body. Being a fat woman explores predominant
conditions about size and gender that denote male power, beauty prejudice and fatphobia (Atayurt, 2010). Grace Nichols in her Fat Black WomanВґs
poem (1984) assertively frames the overweight black female figure from its "triple displaced position" and exchanges this appearance into the "realm
of power and bodily pride", challenging different social and cultural realities (Atayurt, 2010, p. 1). Likewise the feminist fat acceptance movement
portrays fat female from its undesirable connotation and challenges these negative social, political and cultural assumptions, eliminating the structural
barriers fat women face.
Feminist fat acceptance movement attempts to equate fat stigma with other forms of oppression (racism, classism, ableism, ageism, etc.) due to the
political importance of these single fights (Chastain, 2015). In fact, fat individuals are as diverse as any other group of people such as fat queer
people, fat people with disabilities, fat black people or fat indigenous people (Chastain, 2015). Indeed, also fat women have been exposed to various
oppressions and rigorous beauty standards (James, 2013), medicalized discourses (Afful & Ricciardelli, 2015), political expectations and health public
narratives that condemn large bodies (Friedman, 2012).
Therefore, how does the socioeconomic and political context influence the gendered anti–fat narratives? In fact, the gendered anti–fat discussions are
perpetuated and proliferated across Canada. First, a critical analysis of the economic, political, social and moral discourses is required to identify the
meaning of power around fat women and how it is implemented. Second, this paper will critically discuss how to dismantle power from the feminism
and fat acceptance movement perspective, and the role of the stakeholder groups. Third and last, this paper will address my role, responsibility, and
current challenges as a social worker to deconstruct fat oppression narratives.

Importance Of Labor Unions
Why we need labor unions? Labor unions are a part of American history and the reason why we all aren't slaving away in seven days a week for
10 cents an hour. Without labor unions, workers work at the poor pay, poor working conditions, no protective equipment or health benefits. Labor
unions are important because they are one of the few ways working people can organize, to be heard, and to prevent corporate abuses of power.
However, union music provided a powerful tool to recruit new members. The union music that related to labor union movement are "Bread and
Roses" "Which side are you on" and " Talking Union." First, in "Essential labor songs" Kim Ruehl states that " 'Bread and Roses' originally written
by James Oppenheim, absolutely encompasses the sentiments involved with labor struggles. It's based on the old phrase 'bread and circuses.' In
this song, the workers are basically saying 'feed us, yes, but give us a quality life as well.' " The song and slogan are essential parts of The 1912
textile strike in Lawrence, cause of higher wages and shorter work hours. The lyrics, the history of it, the musical rendition, realities that the struggle
continues and my own experiences bring the tears. Tears of they are witnessing the steps of acceptance, new laws, and global support. Tears of deep

Fat Activist Research Paper
Over time, there have been more activists groups than one person can count. Some of these groups, however, stand out amongst the others. A group
that calls themselves the "Fativists" have recently been surfacing in many mainstream outlets such as blogs, social media, and even Television.
Fativists fight discrimination against those who are overweight or fat to put it simply. There is now a growing group of people who believe that "Big
is Beautiful" and, despite the social stigma, that fat people are actually just as beautiful if not more beautiful than those people who are thin. Though

offended by doctors who suggest they lose weight and that they would be healthier. Fativists look at the doctors telling them that they are wrong or
bad because of their weight, so they get offensive and fire back, but simply the doctors are just trying to help. Also, fativists seem to body shame
those who are thin, or conventionally beautiful, the fat activists are simply trying to change our view of beauty because they themselves don't want to
change. Big is beautiful, but not when being big is detrimental to your health. The fat acceptance movement does more harm than good. Being

In the poem entitled "Barbie Doll" by Marge Piercy, a feminist, wrote this poem in 1973, which is around the time of the Feminist Movement. The
poem has a total of four stanzas and no rhyme scheme, so it would be considered a free or blank verse poem. There are two main themes. The first
theme is the overwhelming need to be attractive and be perfect in the eyes of society and the want to live up to or exceed the expectations of others
and the second is that the poem is basically an imitation of social acceptance. In the first stanza, the speaker talks of the toys that the girl had as a child,
the baby doll, the little pretend stove, irons, little red lipsticks, they symbolized the type of work a woman would do (Line 2–4). In lines five through

Personal Narrative: Childhood Obesity
I've always been overweight. Well, perhaps not when I was younger. When I was about five or so, I fit in with the other kids. It wasn't until I hit
seven, probably, that I started to get bigger.
My mom used to bake a lot, and my dad would buy treats and whatnot, and while they both used to be fit people before they had me, they let
themselves go. And I, of course, followed their eating habits. My mother is an excellent cook, and she'd make pretty healthy meals for dinner. It was
the baking, as I said, that got to us. I also didn't really like sports, and I still don't. I always liked swimming, however, and in the summer I'd slim
down a little. Then Christmas would come and I'd eat like shit and only go outside when it snowed.

Now, when I wear that skirt it rides up and is impossible to wear without flashing people. I'm only an inch taller than I was last year, but most of the

I gained back 15 to 20 pounds in the course of my first semester. That's insane.

The Song, All About That Bass
In the summer of 2014, American pop artist Meghan Trainor released her debut single, "All About That Bass." The song, which aims to empower
women of all body types and promote "body positivity," became an instant hit on Top 40 radio and music charts. While positive aspects of the song
include calling out the media's usage of Photoshop on women and attempting to reject the standards of a thin–centric society, the song and its music
video have received criticism from feminists, specifically on their heteronormative and "skinny–shaming" elements. In this paper, I deconstruct the song
and video by using intersectional feminist and queer approaches. I am particularly interested in how Trainor's song "idealizes" and prioritizes
certain bodies over others, and my analysis will focus on how the song's themes represent common (cis)heteronormative, Eurocentric, and fat
oppressive tropes that construct the "idealized" fat woman. Using "All About That Bass" as an entry point, I will analyze how "body positive"
media perpetuates a "white feminist" ideology of who is included and targeted in their messages. For this analysis, I will look at three key themes
embedded within the song's lyrics and music video. First, I will discuss the song's (cis)heteronormative basis for its "body positivity," as well as how
sexuality and fat politics are often paired. Next, I will analyze the function of the racialized body and what it means for Trainor, a white woman, to

otherwise discrimination against people who are overweight or whose bodies do not fit the social norm. The movement got its face in 1967 during a
protest of 500 people in New York's Central Park, and has now spread all over the country and more recently has popped up in various areas in the
UK. The Fat Acceptance Movement has made clear its goals by promoting plus sized models, adding a diversity of shape and size of actors, actresses,

How The Obesity Epidemic Has Evolved Over Time Essay
The question of how the obesity epidemic has evolved over time is best answered by examining the topical literature–not necessarily critical analyses
of anti–obesity propaganda, but the propaganda itself. The difference in content is similar to the distinction between primary and secondary sources.
Although authors and critics like Deborah Lupton and Natalie Boero can connect concepts between the literature on a wider scale, the actual
documents generated by anti–obesity groups and fat advocates provide the best context and examples of the trajectory of the supposed crises in the
present day. Here we examine two such documents, one from the Mayo Clinic's weight loss plan, "My Weight Solutions," and the other from a writer in
support of the fat advocacy movement, Health at Every Size (HAES). Both texts are guidelines for personal health in relation to lifestyle and whether
weight plays a role in health; there are similarities between them, as well as stark contrasts. However, it may come as a surprise that there are more
similarities than not. Both documents are written with a goal in mind–that is, encouraging readers to engage in healthy lifestyle choices. There is a
significant focus on the individual and on realistic behavioral, and therefore psychological, strategies within both documents. Although both documents
relate to concepts in Lupton 's Fat and Boero's Killer Fat, the focus of this analysis will be on the primary documents themselves. The key difference

Body Image In The Media: Do Women Need to Look A Certain Way To Be Accepted?
Body image in the media has been a complex issue for decades. It is clear there are several different body types in women portrayed in magazines,
commercial ads, newspapers, and even certain fictional cartoon characters. For example, Betty Boop has black hair, pale Caucasian skin, and curvature
that makes an adult female "want" her body. These highlighted features on Betty Boop 's body publicly portrays a "beautiful"woman. Therefore, the
purpose of this paper is to closely analyze different articles on how society has shown the way the media portrays controversy factors about women

An overview of how many girls, age group, and the distance, along with the conclusive percentage of girls that were satisfied with their own body;
allows the readers to understand the sensitivity of this study. All of this information was delivered in the abstract. "Among all of these adolescent
girls, 32.8% of girls had overestimated their weight, while only 4.9% of girls had underestimated their weight. Conclusions: This study concludes that
desire to become thin is higher in adolescent girls, even in those who already perceived their body image as too thin." (Dixit et al. 197–202). To
conclude, the results portray the percentage of girls that had overestimated their weight, as well as the percentage that had underestimated weight. This
gives a statistical overview of the study conducted.

of the adolescent during these sensitive times, including a few prior studies as well as proven factors; particularly for physical health.

The Epidemic Of The United States
Epidemics of any scale have both threatened the Earth's people and frightened them in ways unfathomable. Whether it be a global outbreak of
swine flu or an isolated incident of a cold in a small village they all shake the community on some level. But imagine an epidemic that people
willingly promote the growth of an outbreak, one that is being pushed on a national scale to everyone on every social and economic tier. Obesity
has been viewed as a social epidemic and is even noted to have a serious rate of infection through the connection of social networks. The Fat
Acceptance Movement, or FAM, has been the main sponsor of this epidemic by claiming it's acceptable to be obese despite the evidence that's
stacked against their claims. Obesity acceptance needs to be stopped as it is a slow suicide for the obese, and hurts the nation as a whole overall
through social distraught and secondary economic misfortune, in the sense that everyone loses in some way. There's a large campaign to keep our
citizens in top health. Proper diet and exercise are highly stressed to maintain an overall healthy system, especially in our modern societal situation.
This tactic is used to halt obesity: a sort of malefic parasite on our health. Elena Torres–perez has observed that "this excessive adiposity has been
epidemiologically associated with a wide array of metabolic complications such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer"

Enough Fear Of The Fat Analysis
We all want to feel good about ourselves. We want to be able to live in our skin freely and do it without being judged by others. But can we do that
without overlooking the harm and risk if our bodies aren't in a healthy state? As I watched a TED Talk, "Enough fear of the fat" by Kelli Jean
Drinkwater, she brings up a good point on how society needs to accept body positivity, using fatphobia as her main example. Obesity is a part of the
body positivity movement, but it isn't just that. Body positivity also includes those who are dealing with anorexia or body dysmorphia, which is
constantly obsessing and perceiving defects in one's body, when there is hardly any or none at all. I agree with Drinkwater for the most part on that

people who we trust and admire won't even give us acknowledgment to even address the issues we are going through, then who will we depend on

easier to come out of the shadows and bring attention to an underrepresented group due to more laws and public safety being more closely watched
than ever before. This is due to those who took a stand and forced society to rethink its ways. This type of empowerment can be traced as far as back

Unrealistic Beauty Standards
What makes someone beautiful? This striking question has always had a complex answer rather than simple. Society makes their interpretation of
beauty with many standards that qualify for the "most beautiful people" in the world. America's picture of the perfect lady is extremely thin however
full figured. America's picture of the perfect gentleman is also thin, yet very fit. It's always one thing or the other, never one choice. The public has
their own particular rendition of what beauty looks like, yet american beauty happens to have a stance amongst the most startling standards. These
standards of beauty that women see each day impact their confidence and self–esteem negatively only to push them to discover ways to fit into these
unrealistic beauty criterias. Beauty standards in America are ever–changing, but society has yet to absolutely accept the average, everyday woman.
Today, women still feel pressured to be thin but also curvaceous. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and the OG Marilyn Monroe are
women that are idealized for their thin, hourglass figure. Women who don't naturally have this figure are now achieving this look in other ways that
can manipulate their bodies. In order to achieve a curvy, hourglass figure, women have turned to plastic surgery, diets, and waist trainers. Ladies are
so constrained to resemble the perfect lady that they will do whatever it takes to accomplish a trendy look, yet have they gone too far? Brooke Erin

The Goal Of Fat Acceptance
goal of Fat Acceptance Introduction In this modern world everyone is striving for happiness and personal fulfillment. To be happy with one's life, one
must first have the strength to conquer one's own weaknesses. The overweight and obese are finding the pursuit of happiness rather difficult in this
current age to obtain personal satisfaction. As obesity becomes a growing epidemic, resistance to such has also arisen. Fad diets and 'easy solutions'
litter the media creating stigmas and agendas against obesity. The health effects of being overweight can lead to a large number of health problems
including type–2 diabetes, heart disease, heightened blood pressure and cholesterol levels [1]. Although health is extremely important, people often
forget that obese people are humans too. As anthropologists, we can investigate the way in which obesity is affecting people within our society, as
well as the thought processes of individuals and society in general. In this text we will answer the question 'what is the stigma against the overweight
and how is it created?' By studying and contrasting multiple ethnographic texts and studies we will explore the answer to this question, drawing on
real world examples and accounts from real people. On a larger scale we will study the 'fat acceptance' movement as well as investigate how
cyber–communities are challenging discrimination. The stigma surrounding obesity In Western society the media depicts skinny bodies as the social
norm. To not

Gender Roles Of Women And Women
Men and women are consistently sexualized and misrepresented in the media. These misrepresentations have serious implications on society and both
sexes are constrained by these ideals. These ideal depictions of masculine and feminine are threatening to the already distorted gender roles. The media
standards for beauty are outrageous and simply unattainable, putting immense pressure on women today. Moreover media targeting men present a
constant theme of hyper masculinity that is normalized in male culture. Both exaggerations are detrimental to girls and boys today.
As a child grows up no matter the sex they are socialized with rules and norms to follow that align with their sex. The gender role is the behaviors,
attitudes, and characteristics that are expected from a person based on their sex. Boys must be aggressive, masculine, and tough and outgoing where as
girls must be submissive, sweet, caring and emotional (Schaefer & Halland, 2011. p.236). As the child grows they become accustomed to these norms
through socialization. There are many agents of socialization that include, the family, role models, religion, education system, peers and most
importantly the mass media. Media has such a strong influence on everyone's life from the latest smartphone connecting to social networks, TV and
magazines; it is able to shape our culture and influence public opinion and perception. Both genders are inaccurately depicted with hyper masculine and
feminine aesthetics.

Fast Food Has A High Energy Density And Low Nutrient Profile
The days of eating every home–cooked meal at the dining room table are disappearing. As working and living styles become more fast–paced, the time
to exercise or prepare nutritious meals diminishes. Eating habits have changed to achieve convenience. Drive–throughs, delivery, and pre–packaged
meals regularly provide consumers with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options within minutes of ordering. However, fast food has a high
energy density and low nutrient profile that has led to a worldwide increase of waistline. Obesity is becoming one of the most prevalent nutritional
diseases in developed countries. In the United States, adult body fat is measured using body mass index. Approximately 73 million adults have
BMIs greater than or equal to 30, which diagnoses them as obese (Bell et al., 2011). Health professionals have not thoroughly understood the
physiological processes leading to the rapidly increased prevalence; however, high adiposity certainly results from excess caloric intake and
decreased energy expenditure. Childhood obesity, particularly beyond age 12, persists into adulthood in 80% of cases (Huang, Lee, & Lu, 2007).
About 30% of children ages two to 19 years struggle with overweight (Mcpherson, 2012). The World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) growth charts measure standards using body mass index for newborns to two years, and two to 20 years,
respectively. A plot between the 85th and 94th percentiles indicates

The Media's Portrayal Of Body Image In The Media
One of the largest components of the media's portrayal of beauty standards is body shaming, an action that has exponentially increased with the
advancement of technology. Women are exposed daily to articles in tabloid magazines and gossip websites that shames female celebrities for what they
wearing, claiming that some women with certain body types should not be wearing certain types of clothing. Young women and girls, who already
have tumultuous relationships with their bodies and their self–images, are now subjected to a trend that can severely damage their mental health. Shame
arises when a woman's body image does not match the societal ideal, and a recent study found that women who reported high levels of body shame
also reported high levels of hopeless depression, showing a correlation between the two (Evans). When women are repeatedly told that their bodies
are unacceptable to a societal ideal, it can cause them to feel as if they will never reach this impossible standard, leading to hopeless depression. The
fat–shaming trend can be apparent in many forms of media, and it is not always directed at women. An advertisements for the children's movie "Red
Shoes and the 7 Dwarves" exemplifies the body shaming movie. The advertisement depicts a tall and thin Snow White standing next to a shorter and
heavier image of herself, with the tag line "What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 dwarves not so short?" (Ferguson). The
advertisement insinuates that the thinner

Latino Music Essay
I have grown up listening to Hip–Hop just as I did listening to my mother's blaring Bachata and Merengue every Sunday morning and from what I
can recall, the artists I primarily listened to were black, or Eminem. The only Spanish rappers I did listen to were Reggaeton artists, meaning I did not
listen to many predominately English speaking Latino rappers. This revelation of my early musical tastes begs the question as to why I was not
exposed to more Latino rappers during the late nineties and early millennium. In learning about how Latino's have participated within the realm of
Hip–Hop, one learns that allow Latino's have played a major role in its foundations, the call for a strong identity has emerged due to various group's...

African–American acceptance of Latino culture stems largely from similar experiences of prejudice and shared African roots. In addition, black
hip–hop has included various Latino elements, illustrating growing acceptance and integrations between both parties. Various elements present in black
hip–hop include Spanglish lyrics, rumba rhythms (Morales 300–301), and the celebration and desire for a Latina woman, who shares similar physique
to African–American women (Rivera 131–132). In examining Latino Hip–Hop history, an overall theme of inclusion and exclusion emerges, where
Latinos are included if they provide something desirable and marketable and excluded due to their ethnicity. Because of this, the need to affirm Latin
identity becomes a necessity in order to solidify the Latino presence within the genre. Latino rap takes on the Latin American experience and builds
upon to tell poetic stories of pride, unity, and discrimination throughout Latino history. This theme of being proud of one's roots plays a central role in
how Spanish speaking rappers may or may not conduct themselves. For many, the following lyrics illustrate pride in the face of discrimination: Now

Essay about Urging the Acceptance of Plus Size Fashion
Throughout the centuries, history finds women doing whatever they can to fit into the current cookie cutter mold of popular, accepted society. From
the whale bone corsets of the late 1800s to the psychedelic style of hippies in the 1960s and 1970s, one major trend that followed these fashions
through the ages is weight. For the past fifty years or so, since the dawn of models like Twiggy and Verushka von Lehndorff, the world turned away
from the "plus size" and opened its arms only to the phenomenon of thin. But what did society think of plus sized fashion in a time when thin was
unaccepted? A web article from articalesbase.com sheds some light on the subject: "In the past, a big beautiful body was associated with health and

She continues, explaining that the "ideal" woman (portrayed by models and movie stars) is 5'7", weighs only 100 pounds, and wears a size 8
(Lacey). These figures indict an alarming fact: sizes generally consider as "plus sizes", are, in actually, "real sizes", worn by the majority of
women in the United States of America. Yet still, many designers, especially high fashion designers, ignore the majority and design for the
aforementioned ideal woman. Many stores carry plus sizes (Target, DEB), but only up to 16W or 18W, and generally, these are mainly just larger
version of smaller fashion, most of which are not meant for a more voluptuous body. Other stores specifically carry styles designed to cover up and
hide curves in ill designed drapes, not flaunt them (Fig 1). Still other stores offer plus sizes, but only over the internet (Old Navy, Forever 21,
GAP), as though all plus size women lack the need to try anything on. Rarely do stores cater to the needs of bigger women. In an industry as
cutthroat as the apparel industry, why would retailers choose to remove something that specifically caters to a large group of women? "It's not that

Plus-Size Fashion Movement: Black, Latina, Asian, And...
Research Prospectus My project began with something I was curious about: the question of whether or not empowerment for fat people lies solely in
fashion. If it does, why? Should it? Why does the western world overvalue beauty? Can the fat acceptance and plus–size movements challenge more
than fatness alone? Why does the plus–size movement exclude Black, Latina, Asian, and Indigenous women? Why does the plus–size fashion
movement reproduce racist western beauty standards? Why does the plus–size fashion movement fail to account for multiple axes of oppression?
These questions led me to the conclusion that the popular fat acceptance movement and its subcategory of plus–size fashion both lack an important
critical lens. This lack stops the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I want to use previously collected narratives as I construct a view of the contemporary plus size fashion online community. I will examine how within
the contemporary online plus size fashion community, messages about self–love and self–acceptance are wrapped up in consumer and capitalistic
drive, as well as bodily control. I call this idea selling self–love; this idea is especially prevalent in the example of plus size blogger and YouTube user
Sarah Rae Vargas' $34 calendar entitled "A Year of Inspiration," a plus size calendar. Its focus is to promote self
–love throughout the year. The example
of Sarah Rae Vargas is useful in examining how the plus size fashion community reproduces the same values of bodily control as the larger
straight–sized fashion industry. Adorning each month is a picture of Sarah Rae Vargas, in a black dress, a bathing suit, a loose sweater. Sarah's
stomach is disguised and perfectly smooth, and she wears makeup. On one hand, this calendar is a part of the larger idea of fat women reclaiming
space in a fashion industry from which they are

Orthodontic Self Esteem
The smile is one of the most effective methods of conveying emotion and evaluating self–esteem (Adeyemi 2004, Hulsey 1970). This is especially true
for young adults, who, according to Harris and Carr, are more self–conscious about their smile than their eyes, ears, legs, and chest (Harris and Carr
2001). The perception of what constitutes a beautiful smile is largely influenced by cultural expectations and standards (Rodrigues 2009). Individuals
may become unsatisfied with their present dental appearance when they perceive that their smile does not meet these criteria (Svedstrom–Oristo 2009).
Such perceptions have led to the development and enhancement of several orthodontic techniques (Asbell 1990, Cala 2010, Islam 2009).

decreased oral hygiene compliance, increases the incidence of demineralization and white spot lesions (Migliorati 2014, Kossack 2005). There are also
dietary recommendations that exist to minimize appliance damage (Krishnan 2012 – Integrated Clinical Orthodontics). Another focus of this study is
to evaluate the perceptions of these dietary and hygienic restrictions with regards to metal braces and clear

Social Media And Its Impact On Society
Traditionally, people used the Internet to simply expend content: they read it, they watched it, and they used it to buy products and services.
Increasingly, however, people are now utilizing platforms––such as content sharing sites, blogs, social networking, and wikis––to create, modify, share,
and discuss Internet content. This represents the social media phenomenon, which can now significantly impact how an entire movement is viewed
worldwide. It's difficult to comprehend in this day and age that social media could actually produce something positive and worthwhile, considering
so much of the discussions are filled with arguments revolving around race relations, political ideologies, and violence. The social media
phenomenon has people "plugged in" to twitter wars between celebrities, the latest political sound bites, and hashtags to use against one another (i.e
#BlackLivesMatter vs. #PoliceLivesMatter). Yet, through the issues, there are social media platforms that promote positive expressiveness of one's
self worth and love. In relation to the body, the hashtag #EffYourBeautyStandards has created its own phenomenon within the realm of the internet. In
times of body shaming, scrutiny, and being judged based off of a size on the back of a tag, or the color of your skin, or the lack of makeup one
refuses to where, this hashtag promotes beauty acceptances and embraces the differences of every person. This social media movement started with a

American Society For Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
What would we change about our bodies if we could? Our face, our thighs, or our hips? What about our eyes or our lips? Would we change
everything? If given the chance, more than sixty percent of people would endure cosmetic surgery in the hopes of achieving their "ideal" form,
according to a survey conducted by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In our nation, society has taken full control over body
image. Not just any body image, though, our body image. Recently, bodies have been the favorite subject of our culture. These bodies are
plastered to every major advertisement, the ones paraded down runways, and cast for the lead in television. These are the bodies that diet and
exercise articles say you can have for the time, effort, and patience. These are the bodies surgeons say can happen with a lump sum and a few
weeks of recovery. These ideal bodies have plagued our nation in a way that nothing else has. These are the bodies that sixty percent of people
dream of having, but don't. Bodies are becoming the number one priority in our life, but at what cost? Today, the emphasis placed on body image is
so widespread that children of even younger ages are suffering. When asking around, I discovered that a close friend of mine had a niece, eight years
old, who was already concerned with whether she was "too fat" or not. It may seem a little far–fetched but think about it. Everything a child is exposed
to highlights other children with slim bodies. In television

The Causes Of The Stonewall Riots
In 1969 in Greenwich Village, New York, a 6 day riot took place that would launch the first Pride March and launch the Gay Rights movement as a
national movement. The conflict was started when police raided the Stonewall bar, a bar that was a safe place for homosexuals to visit, and violence
erupted between the two groups. In the end, homosexuals were granted more rights and gained more acceptance in American culture. The Stonewall
Riots took place in Greenwich Village, New York in 1969. Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar run by the mafia, which outraged its many
patrons and the people of the village. The patrons of the bar was not the only reason the Stonewall Inn got raided. Since it was illegal to sell
alcohol to homosexuals, it was done illegally. The SLA, the state liquor authority, would not give liquor licenses to those who would sell to
homosexuals. The Stonewall Inn owner, Fat Tony, combated this problem by saying the bar was a bottle club. A bottle club was where the patrons
would bring their own bottles and get their alcohol from their privately owned stock. Violence broke out after 13 people were arrested and put into a
wagon. "People in the crowd yelled at the police to stop. The officers responded by telling them to get off the street. Someone started throwing pocket
change at the officers, and others began rocking the wagon" (Rede). Other villagers and patrons threw objects at the police, such as bricks and bottles,
and chanted protests to the

Gmo Labeling Pros And Cons
The labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is an extremely delicate issue. The way the law deals with this heated argument is extremely
important for future research and public acceptance. I will argue that the benefits of the biotechnology that deals with GMOs outweigh the risks, and
that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should continue to regulate GMOs under the current system which does not require special labeling if
the food is "substantially equivalent."(FDA)
It is a proven fact that we humans have been tinkering with our food's DNA since the dawn of agriculture. By selectively breeding plants and animals
with the most desirable traits, our ancestors transformed organisms, turning something not so desirable into something more valuable. For the ... Show

However, this ideology (as proven by science) is flawed. This argument depends entirely on individual GMOs, which should be assessed on a
case–by–case basis. Some people who are for labeling have pointed out, however, that transferring a gene from an allergenic food crop, such as
peanuts, could make the GMO food allergenic as well. While this is a possibility (although really small), routine safety testing that takes place in the
manufacturing industry should prevent such products from going on the market. The risks associated with GMO foods are considered by many to be
very low. So low in fact, that the risks are comparable to those arising from traditional selective breeding. To date, there is no scientific evidence
suggesting that GMOs cause harm in humans. Likewise, most animal studies conducted suggest that GMOs are safe. Yet, despite the general lack of
evidence against GMO foods, there is considerable public opposition to them and the debate continues. This may be partly due to general distrust of
biotech companies. There is also a potential conflict of interest in many scientific

Music and the American Culture Essay
Music has played a vital role in human culture and evidence based on archaeological sites can date it back to prehistoric times. It can be traced
through almost all civilizations in one form or another. As time has progressed so has the music and the influences it has on people. Music is an
important part of popular culture throughout the world, but it is especially popular in the United States. The music industry here is, and has been, a
multi–million dollar business that continues to play an important role in American popular culture. This is also a art form and business that is forever

Many see it as a catchy rap song with a good beat, but the actual message it portrays would have many listeners and parents disgusted. The basic
message of this song is that Fat Joe and Lil Wayne like to throw stacks of money at strippers and make it look like its raining in the club, hence the
title of the song. These rappers are portraying the lifestyles of young, rich, defiant rap artists. A portion of the lyrics in the chorus are, "Got a handful
of stacks better grab an umbrella.
I make it rain, I make it rain (Oh), Make it rain on them hoes". This chorus is repeated multiple times throughout the entire song. This type of
message and song does not fit in with the messages, goals, values and beliefs of the feminists movement and we see a clash between the music
industry, specifically rap music, and the feminist movement before and after this song. Since the beginning of its art form rap music has been subject
to scrutiny throughout its existence. In a Theresa Martinez reading from the semester, the author describes rap music as a resistance. She builds on a
theory of oppositional culture that was composed by Bonnie Mitchell and Joe Feagin (1995). In this article, "POPULAR CULTURE AS
OPPOSITIONAL CULTURE: Rap as Resistance", Martinez explains how African Americans, American Indians, and Mexican Americans draw on their
own cultural resources to resist oppression. She states that this very resistance to the dominate culture in

The idea of equality for everyone is a noble one. Equality for race and gender, specifically, have been fought for for over a century. This simple idea
of being able to live the way you want to without any constraints put on you just like any other person is a dream that we all know oh so well.
The feminists on the other side of the world that are still fighting for their basic rights have my full and undivided support! But the idea of gender
equality being driven here is fundamentally different than say race equality. The women here want complete and total equality, which is to say that
everything we get, they get. But gender equality isn't as easy to achieve as race equality. While the culture behind different races are different, many
other factors stay mainly the same, which is why race equality was fought so hard for. This is much different with the two genders, however. Inherently,
males and females have little to no commonality. They behave psychologically different– as portrayed by how each gender would work in groups of
their own gender, how they would work with the other gender, the decisions that they make, etc– are completely built different, and so

Normalization Of Obesity
Does it make sense for over a third of adult Americans, or 78.6 million people (Adult Obese Facts), to be classified as sick? In June of 2013 the
American Medical Association classified obesity, the property of having a body mass index of 30 or higher, a disease. This decision went against the
advice of its own Public Health and Science committee, which has led to widespread discussion of the classification of obesity (Stoner). In this new
technological age, obesity has become normalized, yet still labeled a disease. Less time has been given to home cooked meals with more people eating
unhealthy fast food than ever before. If we call obesity a disease, a number of factors will lead to the increased normalizing of it in society. Obesity

A risk factor is an attribute, a characteristic, or a source of exposure that increases the likelihood of an injury or disease. For example, smoking is a
preventable risk factor for lung cancer, obesity is a preventable risk factor for coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type II Diabetes,
metabolic syndrome, cancer, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, reproductive problems, and gallstones, (What Are the Health Risks). It may even be
linked to other conditions that are not found to contain enough evidence to prove their correlation. Unlike other diseases, obesity can be easily
treated due to it only being a weight issue. Obesity is caused by someone's own actions and can be eliminated the same way it was created. It is
easily preventable and treatable. Other diseases must be treated with medications, special therapies, or surgeries. For instance, in the case of
emphysema, there is no way to treat it fully after it has been diagnosed, the only treatments available just prolong the patient's inevitable death.
Obesity doesn't require any of that. It can simply be treated by burning more calories than are eaten. Obesity and its side effects can be reversible
and do not become intractable, unlike type II diabetes which has a high probability of occurring from obesity. The obesity part can be fixed forever,
but the diabetes will never leave. Other diseases are caused by genetics or pathogens, obesity is simply caused by eating more calories than burned.
Certain aspects of human genetics do not give excuses to be obese. Even if genetics enable obesity, it can still be overcome with a little more

The Social Construction Of Gender Essay

  • 1. The Social Construction Of Gender Essay The physical body has been seen as many things both positive and negative. It can be thought of as the temple which houses the soul or can be seen as entrapping, like a cage of flesh. More often it seems that the body, especially women's bodies, are looked at in more complicated ways than the bodies of men. As I grew up, it began to feel more and more like my body, and the bodies of other women, did not actually belong to us like we believed. Through my Women's Studies class I have gained more knowledge on the body as a political object. In this essay I will examine six different articles with the similar theme of women's bodies, the expression of those bodies and how by using feminism as a political standpoint they gain power and ownership of their bodies. The first article is "The Social Construction of Gender" by Judith Lorber. In this essay she states that sex and gender is constructed through the society in which we live and that, "Gender is so pervasive that in our society we assume it is bred into our genes" (Lorber, 64). Lorber's article takes the standpoint that physical gender expression is such an important topic to individuals because when the conventions of gender are shifted, "we feel socially dislocated" (65). An example of this is when people who are not used to gender shifts encounter a "transvestite," or in modern terms a transgender person, their perceptions are disrupted. If someone does not express physical gender "normally" with their bodies–i.e. a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Anorexia In Today's Society Being skinny has been America's greatest beauty ideal for decades, a societal standard pressured upon women. In our current society, the media expects women to look a certain way. However, the media's interpretation of an ideal body is so warped and distorted that many women are attempting to attain an unrealistic physical appearance that will never be possible. Most models within the fashion industry are thinner than 98% of American women (Lippey). When models are photoshopped and put in magazines, completely unachievable body goals are displayed everywhere. Even models suffer from substantial expectations–– 64.1% of models have been asked to lose weight by their agencies ("Model Scouts"). Models can be perceived as perfect, epitomes of beauty, and yet they too are unable to reach their own agency's demanding requirements. These unhealthy and toxic standards have been placed upon a tall pedestal that no one can achieve. According to the NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), there has been "a rise in incidence of anorexia in young women ages 15 to 19 in each decade since 1930" ("Get The Facts"). Damaging and negative concepts are established during childhood, forcing adolescent girls to believe that if they can't fit into... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to many news sources, a recent series of studies have shown that when overweight individuals are exposed to fat shaming, they suffer from a result opposite to the intended outcome. Rather than feeling motivated to lose weight, many of the participants in the study felt stressed, upset, and ended up overeating (Robinson). These studies reveal that fat–shaming someone is an ineffective and useless tactic that won't help the obesity epidemic in the end. Even if some obese people are able to diet and lose weight, 97% of dieters gain back all of their lost weight within three years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The DREAM Act Movement On the other hand, I also believe that the DREAM Act movement also has its own reasons for an immigrant to be out as undocumented in the US, aside from visibility purposes and opening up a community to form a collective identity for the movement. According to Liana Gamber–Thompson & Arely M. Zimmerman "'being in the shadows' is worse than being a public activist because, if he were ever deported his entire network of activists and allies would know (202). Also, according to Zimmerman, he has noted that "coming out narratives have been employed well beyond LGBTQ movements, which members of the fat acceptance and disability rights movement also embracing the concept" (197). Zimmerman's observation signifies that the intersectionality that exists ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But now under a new presidency and a new administration, wherein undocumented very much feel threatened and fear of the tomorrow for valid reasons, such as the first DREAMer, Manuel Montes, having already been deported back to Mexico. There is no longer this big celebration of "coming out" campaign, but rather going back to the "shadows" and conceal. Although, the protests keep occurring, they have morphed into other forms to secure safety, such as the national 'Day Without Immigrants' that took place everywhere in the country on February 16th, 2017, in which people who identified as immigrants would not go to work or would stop doing any other activity that is part of their daily routine. The intersection between the immigrant and LGBTQ+ movement helped DREAMers to have an official voice, despite they remaining unofficial in a nation that was build by immigrants. And while the LGBTQ+ movement still embraces "coming out" very dearly every 11th of October as 'National Coming Out Day,' the DREAM Act has moved on from that phase in their movement tactics and has adopted others, mostly due to the contingencies of todays' ... • 4. Eating Disorders : A Young Woman Sits At The Table A young woman sits at the table, her untouched food unnoticed by her peers. Besides, what is the significance of one or two skipped meals? Another young woman slips away after dinner and shuts the bathroom door. The hiss of the running shower drowns out the sounds of her purging. Is something an issue if it goes unseen? There are some who would brush these questions aside. However, negative eating attitudes and behaviors have escalated into widespread suffering of eating disorders. In fact, the National Institute for Mental Health reported that 25% of all college students are victims of either anorexia nervosa or bulimia. Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as "Ana", is an eating disorder characterized by extreme restriction or complete avoidance of food. On the other hand bulimia, nicknamed "Mia", is distinguished by binging and purging. These disorders are far from insignificant, because they are much more than a few skipped meals and unseen purges. Eating disorders, which have become a deadly epidemic, are fed by unrealistic social expectations, are encouraged by firmly rooted pro "Ana" and "Mia" communities, and are often found coinciding with other mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, both of which are common among college students. Society is a finicky critic. Around every corner there is an advertisement or magazine cover offering a basis for beauty. This beauty is skinny. It is flawless skin, slender thighs, and flat stomachs. Most of all it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Reflecting Body Images from American Culture Sara Brown 12–7–05 Eng 101 MW Isbell J Reflecting Body Images from American Culture Currently in America Culture there is a prevailing desire to become thin. "Between five per cent and ten per cent of girls and women (i.e. five–ten million people) and one million boys and men suffer from eating disorders, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, or other associated dietary conditions." (http://www.annecollins.com /eating–disorders/statistics.htm) So many people are influenced by the media that it transforms their own self image into unrealistic ideas leading many adolescent females and some males to eating disorders. (Stearns Pg. 72) Dieting soon became natural for women and the sexuality was less modest. Obese women were becoming ridiculed for being overweight, literature aimed at the very groups being insulted, women were the clear targets. "Are you aware that fatness has destroyed your sex appeal and made you look older, somewhat like a buffoon whom people are inclined not to take seriously in any area or on any level."(Stearn Pg. 83, 16) Entries such as this were written in books such as Murray Siegel (1971), Think Thin or Glamour, Glucose and Glands by Frank J. Wilson (1956). This time period was also when women were stepping into the workforce with great strides and if the woman was over weight, she was looked upon as "unreliable" and "lazy". (Stearns) Women became an object of mockery, an example of no self–discipline and social failures if they were not thin. From the mid nineteen hundreds to present times the media has greatly influenced society's acceptance on body image. Even today, women are still mocked for being obese. Heavier women are a continued target in today's society by magazines containing headlines such as "How to lose weight." and "How to be skinner". The number of dieting and exercise articles in popular women's magazine increase every year. • 6. Media Coverage Of Childhood Obesity Media coverage contributes to how childhood obesity is framed and stigmatized in Canadian society. The media contributes to changes in popular culture, which can affect how the dilemma of childhood obesity is viewed and addressed. Several forms of media, including campaigns, social media, and the news help to construct popular opinions when looking at the issue. The views provided by different media platforms and organizations help to frame the problem of childhood obesity, and address the problems associated with the dilemma. First, media coverage of childhood obesity can be seen from organizations such as the Childhood Obesity Foundation. The organization's purpose is "...to lead a societal shift toward healthy eating and active lifestyles to promote childhood healthy weights and the resulting physical and emotional impacts" (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The mission statement promotes the idea that childhood obesity could cause unhappiness and sickness for children, and that society needs to change in order to address the issue. A section on the website addresses the current obesogenic environment of society, which it describes as "...places that encourage people to eat unhealthily and not exercise enough" (Childhood Obesity Foundation 2015). The foundation frames society as a negative environment that encourages unhealthy behaviors, requiring changes to a more health–focused society. Furthermore, the website has a section regarding the complications of childhood ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Discrimination And Body Acceptance In Society. “Why Are Discrimination and Body Acceptance in Society "Why are so many people discriminative against other people's bodies?" (Kelli Jean Drinkwater) Why is it anyone's business how others choose to live their lives and how they look? One of the most pervasive and yet ignored discriminations in our society is due to weight, size and body image. As a society, we should be respecting one another as individuals instead of judging each other superficially. Keyboard Commandos on social media sites are constantly criticizing others for being too big, too thin, too lazy, and too everything. The internet trolls will say it is because they are "concerned" for them. They sometimes act like they are medical professionals who know the medical history of the... All people have body images, and they stress about if and how much they will fit in with what's considered "normal," "acceptable," or "attractive" based on how they feel about themselves or how others react when they see them. Anna Lavis states that "As a person grows and especially when they hit their adolescent years, body image becomes a huge part of their self–esteem and self–image." ( Eli, K., and Ulijaszek, S.) This is where discrimination comes in, because of social media like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and others that provide us the anonymity to judge one another. Human Diseases and Conditions says that "Nowadays there is too much focus on physical appearance that it is causing body image problems, and that women and young girls are especially affected by this as they are constantly bombarded with images of how they "should" look. (Batten, P. Schummer, and Selden, H.) "It has been argued that within a patriarchal society, women have been traditionally disempowered due to the physical 'inferiority' of the female body." (Whitehead, K., & Kurz, T.) People with average bodies look at movie stars, internet "celebrities", and models in magazines and then think of themselves as "fat" compared to the images they see. This is leading to a large number of young people embracing the cult–like "religion" of participating in anorexic and bulimic habits while their bodies are still growing. ... • 8. Beauty And Beauty Standards Moreover, many popular clothing and beauty brands have perpetrated the idea of beauty standards with their advertisements and use of models. American Eagle Outfitters, one of the most popular clothing brands among teenage girls, states on their bags, "The Real You is Beautiful", and their ads feature the phrase "The girl in this photo has not been retouched." Those this may appear to an encouraging message, the messages are placed next to young, tall, and thin models. Though items such as freckles or tattoos are not photoshopped away, the models still display certain key characteristics. In this, the brand is sending the message that the real you is beautiful, but only if the "real you" appears a certain way. This holds true for many brands that feature the same type of women, a clear absence of plus–sized models. Similarly, Victoria's Secret, one of the most popular lingerie brands, is well known for their selective model–picking process and the beauty standards the models are held too. (Bahadur). In this advertisement for Victoria's Secret, a popular lingerie and clothing store, ten eerily similar models are lined next to each, with the words "The Perfect 'Body'' overlaid. The models in these photos all possess similar qualities: young, tall, slim–waisted, long–legged, and possess flawless complexions. Though the phrase "perfect body" may be intended to describe the fit of the bra, it is quickly associated with the appearance of the models. The advertisement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Fat Women In Grace Nichols's Fat Black Woman Being fat and being woman is more than just a physical appearance or characteristic that describe a body. Being a fat woman explores predominant conditions about size and gender that denote male power, beauty prejudice and fatphobia (Atayurt, 2010). Grace Nichols in her Fat Black WomanВґs poem (1984) assertively frames the overweight black female figure from its "triple displaced position" and exchanges this appearance into the "realm of power and bodily pride", challenging different social and cultural realities (Atayurt, 2010, p. 1). Likewise the feminist fat acceptance movement portrays fat female from its undesirable connotation and challenges these negative social, political and cultural assumptions, eliminating the structural barriers fat women face. Feminist fat acceptance movement attempts to equate fat stigma with other forms of oppression (racism, classism, ableism, ageism, etc.) due to the political importance of these single fights (Chastain, 2015). In fact, fat individuals are as diverse as any other group of people such as fat queer people, fat people with disabilities, fat black people or fat indigenous people (Chastain, 2015). Indeed, also fat women have been exposed to various oppressions and rigorous beauty standards (James, 2013), medicalized discourses (Afful & Ricciardelli, 2015), political expectations and health public narratives that condemn large bodies (Friedman, 2012). Therefore, how does the socioeconomic and political context influence the gendered anti–fat narratives? In fact, the gendered anti–fat discussions are perpetuated and proliferated across Canada. First, a critical analysis of the economic, political, social and moral discourses is required to identify the meaning of power around fat women and how it is implemented. Second, this paper will critically discuss how to dismantle power from the feminism and fat acceptance movement perspective, and the role of the stakeholder groups. Third and last, this paper will address my role, responsibility, and current challenges as a social worker to deconstruct fat oppression narratives. Political, Social and Moral Dominate Discourses Culturally imposed image of feminine beauty has been conceptualized within the thin ideal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Importance Of Labor Unions Why we need labor unions? Labor unions are a part of American history and the reason why we all aren't slaving away in seven days a week for 10 cents an hour. Without labor unions, workers work at the poor pay, poor working conditions, no protective equipment or health benefits. Labor unions are important because they are one of the few ways working people can organize, to be heard, and to prevent corporate abuses of power. However, union music provided a powerful tool to recruit new members. The union music that related to labor union movement are "Bread and Roses" "Which side are you on" and " Talking Union." First, in "Essential labor songs" Kim Ruehl states that " 'Bread and Roses' originally written by James Oppenheim, absolutely encompasses the sentiments involved with labor struggles. It's based on the old phrase 'bread and circuses.' In this song, the workers are basically saying 'feed us, yes, but give us a quality life as well.' " The song and slogan are essential parts of The 1912 textile strike in Lawrence, cause of higher wages and shorter work hours. The lyrics, the history of it, the musical rendition, realities that the struggle continues and my own experiences bring the tears. Tears of they are witnessing the steps of acceptance, new laws, and global support. Tears of deep sadness knowing there is so much more that needs to accomplish. Second, in "The Music of Labor: From Movement to Culture" Michael L. Richmond states that " 'Solidarity Forever' still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Fat Activist Research Paper Over time, there have been more activists groups than one person can count. Some of these groups, however, stand out amongst the others. A group that calls themselves the "Fativists" have recently been surfacing in many mainstream outlets such as blogs, social media, and even Television. Fativists fight discrimination against those who are overweight or fat to put it simply. There is now a growing group of people who believe that "Big is Beautiful" and, despite the social stigma, that fat people are actually just as beautiful if not more beautiful than those people who are thin. Though Fat Activists are just now beginning to make headlines now there have been many Fativist groups dating back to the late 1960's. While hippies were staging sit–ins fat activists were staging their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fativists look at the doctors telling them that they are wrong or bad because of their weight, so they get offensive and fire back, but simply the doctors are just trying to help. Also, fativists seem to body shame those who are thin, or conventionally beautiful, the fat activists are simply trying to change our view of beauty because they themselves don't want to change. The poem has a total of four stanzas and no rhyme scheme, so it would be considered a free or blank verse poem. There are two main themes. The first theme is the overwhelming need to be attractive and be perfect in the eyes of society and the want to live up to or exceed the expectations of others and the second is that the poem is basically an imitation of social acceptance. In the first stanza, the speaker talks of the toys that the girl had as a child, the baby doll, the little pretend stove, irons, little red lipsticks, they symbolized the type of work a woman would do (Line 2–4). • 13. Personal Narrative: Childhood Obesity I've always been overweight. Well, perhaps not when I was younger. When I was about five or so, I fit in with the other kids. It wasn't until I hit seven, probably, that I started to get bigger. My mom used to bake a lot, and my dad would buy treats and whatnot, and while they both used to be fit people before they had me, they let themselves go. And I, of course, followed their eating habits. My mother is an excellent cook, and she'd make pretty healthy meals for dinner. It was the baking, as I said, that got to us. I also didn't really like sports, and I still don't. I always liked swimming, however, and in the summer I'd slim down a little. Then Christmas would come and I'd eat like shit and only go outside when it snowed. I remember ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And I caught the biology teacher glancing at me, and the boy I was partnered with in history blushed while talking to me. It felt pretty good. I never dressed like that before. Now, when I wear that skirt it rides up and is impossible to wear without flashing people. I'm only an inch taller than I was last year, but most of the weight I gained back went to my ass and thighs, so that didn't work in the skirt's favor. Or mine. According to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, "more than one–third of adults and 17% of youth in the United States are obese." With the rise on kidnapping and distracted driving, most parents elect to keep their children inside. This has created a younger generation denied of exercise unless under close supervision. • 15. The Song, All About That Bass In the summer of 2014, American pop artist Meghan Trainor released her debut single, "All About That Bass." The song, which aims to empower women of all body types and promote "body positivity," became an instant hit on Top 40 radio and music charts. While positive aspects of the song include calling out the media's usage of Photoshop on women and attempting to reject the standards of a thin–centric society, the song and its music video have received criticism from feminists, specifically on their heteronormative and "skinny–shaming" elements. In this paper, I deconstruct the song and video by using intersectional feminist and queer approaches. I am particularly interested in how Trainor's song "idealizes" and prioritizes certain bodies over others, and my analysis will focus on how the song's themes represent common (cis)heteronormative, Eurocentric, and fat oppressive tropes that construct the "idealized" fat woman. Using "All About That Bass" as an entry point, I will analyze how "body positive" media perpetuates a "white feminist" ideology of who is included and targeted in their messages. For this analysis, I will look at three key themes embedded within the song's lyrics and music video. First, I will discuss the song's (cis)heteronormative basis for its "body positivity," as well as how sexuality and fat politics are often paired. Next, I will analyze the function of the racialized body and what it means for Trainor, a white woman, to appropriate racial tropes for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Fat Acceptance Movement Research Paper The Fat Acceptance Movement, formerly known as Fat Pride, Fat Power, or Fat Liberation, is an attempt at exterminating bias, criticism, and otherwise discrimination against people who are overweight or whose bodies do not fit the social norm. The movement got its face in 1967 during a protest of 500 people in New York's Central Park, and has now spread all over the country and more recently has popped up in various areas in the UK. The Fat Acceptance Movement has made clear its goals by promoting plus sized models, adding a diversity of shape and size of actors, actresses, and characters in entertainment and arts, and pushing for laws and protections in favor of the overweight community. • 17. How The Obesity Epidemic Has Evolved Over Time Essay The question of how the obesity epidemic has evolved over time is best answered by examining the topical literature–not necessarily critical analyses of anti–obesity propaganda, but the propaganda itself. The difference in content is similar to the distinction between primary and secondary sources. Although authors and critics like Deborah Lupton and Natalie Boero can connect concepts between the literature on a wider scale, the actual documents generated by anti–obesity groups and fat advocates provide the best context and examples of the trajectory of the supposed crises in the present day. Here we examine two such documents, one from the Mayo Clinic's weight loss plan, "My Weight Solutions," and the other from a writer in support of the fat advocacy movement, Health at Every Size (HAES). Both texts are guidelines for personal health in relation to lifestyle and whether weight plays a role in health; there are similarities between them, as well as stark contrasts. However, it may come as a surprise that there are more similarities than not. Both documents are written with a goal in mind–that is, encouraging readers to engage in healthy lifestyle choices. There is a significant focus on the individual and on realistic behavioral, and therefore psychological, strategies within both documents. Although both documents relate to concepts in Lupton 's Fat and Boero's Killer Fat, the focus of this analysis will be on the primary documents themselves. The key difference between ... Whether it be a global outbreak of swine flu or an isolated incident of a cold in a small village they all shake the community on some level. But imagine an epidemic that people willingly promote the growth of an outbreak, one that is being pushed on a national scale to everyone on every social and economic tier. Obesity has been viewed as a social epidemic and is even noted to have a serious rate of infection through the connection of social networks. The Fat Acceptance Movement, or FAM, has been the main sponsor of this epidemic by claiming it's acceptable to be obese despite the evidence that's stacked against their claims. Obesity acceptance needs to be stopped as it is a slow suicide for the obese, and hurts the nation as a whole overall through social distraught and secondary economic misfortune, in the sense that everyone loses in some way. There's a large campaign to keep our citizens in top health. Proper diet and exercise are highly stressed to maintain an overall healthy system, especially in our modern societal situation. This tactic is used to halt obesity: a sort of malefic parasite on our health. But can we do that without overlooking the harm and risk if our bodies aren't in a healthy state? As I watched a TED Talk, "Enough fear of the fat" by Kelli Jean Drinkwater, she brings up a good point on how society needs to accept body positivity, using fatphobia as her main example. Obesity is a part of the body positivity movement, but it isn't just that. Society makes their interpretation of beauty with many standards that qualify for the "most beautiful people" in the world. It's always one thing or the other, never one choice. The overweight and obese are finding the pursuit of happiness rather difficult in this current age to obtain personal satisfaction. As obesity becomes a growing epidemic, resistance to such has also arisen. Fad diets and 'easy solutions' litter the media creating stigmas and agendas against obesity. The health effects of being overweight can lead to a large number of health problems including type–2 diabetes, heart disease, heightened blood pressure and cholesterol levels [1]. Although health is extremely important, people often forget that obese people are humans too. As anthropologists, we can investigate the way in which obesity is affecting people within our society, as well as the thought processes of individuals and society in general. In this text we will answer the question 'what is the stigma against the overweight and how is it created?' By studying and contrasting multiple ethnographic texts and studies we will explore the answer to this question, drawing on real world examples and accounts from real people. These misrepresentations have serious implications on society and both sexes are constrained by these ideals. These ideal depictions of masculine and feminine are threatening to the already distorted gender roles. Moreover media targeting men present a constant theme of hyper masculinity that is normalized in male culture. Both exaggerations are detrimental to girls and boys today. Drive–throughs, delivery, and pre–packaged meals regularly provide consumers with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options within minutes of ordering. However, fast food has a high energy density and low nutrient profile that has led to a worldwide increase of waistline. Obesity is becoming one of the most prevalent nutritional diseases in developed countries. In the United States, adult body fat is measured using body mass index. Approximately 73 million adults have BMIs greater than or equal to 30, which diagnoses them as obese (Bell et al., 2011). • 26. The Media's Portrayal Of Body Image In The Media One of the largest components of the media's portrayal of beauty standards is body shaming, an action that has exponentially increased with the advancement of technology. Women are exposed daily to articles in tabloid magazines and gossip websites that shames female celebrities for what they wearing, claiming that some women with certain body types should not be wearing certain types of clothing. Young women and girls, who already have tumultuous relationships with their bodies and their self–images, are now subjected to a trend that can severely damage their mental health. Shame arises when a woman's body image does not match the societal ideal, and a recent study found that women who reported high levels of body shame also reported high levels of hopeless depression, showing a correlation between the two (Evans). When women are repeatedly told that their bodies are unacceptable to a societal ideal, it can cause them to feel as if they will never reach this impossible standard, leading to hopeless depression. The fat–shaming trend can be apparent in many forms of media, and it is not always directed at women. An advertisements for the children's movie "Red Shoes and the 7 Dwarves" exemplifies the body shaming movie. The advertisement depicts a tall and thin Snow White standing next to a shorter and heavier image of herself, with the tag line "What if Snow White was no longer beautiful and the 7 dwarves not so short?" From the whale bone corsets of the late 1800s to the psychedelic style of hippies in the 1960s and 1970s, one major trend that followed these fashions through the ages is weight. For the past fifty years or so, since the dawn of models like Twiggy and Verushka von Lehndorff, the world turned away from the "plus size" and opened its arms only to the phenomenon of thin. Yet still, many designers, especially high fashion designers, ignore the majority and design for the aforementioned ideal woman. Many stores carry plus sizes (Target, DEB), but only up to 16W or 18W, and generally, these are mainly just larger version of smaller fashion, most of which are not meant for a more voluptuous body. Other stores specifically carry styles designed to cover up and hide curves in ill designed drapes, not flaunt them (Fig 1). Still other stores offer plus sizes, but only over the internet (Old Navy, Forever 21, GAP), as though all plus size women lack the need to try anything on. The risks associated with GMO foods are considered by many to be very low. So low in fact, that the risks are comparable to those arising from traditional selective breeding. To date, there is no scientific evidence suggesting that GMOs cause harm in humans. Likewise, most animal studies conducted suggest that GMOs are safe. Yet, despite the general lack of evidence against GMO foods, there is considerable public opposition to them and the debate continues. This may be partly due to general distrust of biotech companies. There is also a potential conflict of interest in many scientific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Music and the American Culture Essay Music has played a vital role in human culture and evidence based on archaeological sites can date it back to prehistoric times. It can be traced through almost all civilizations in one form or another. As time has progressed so has the music and the influences it has on people. Music is an important part of popular culture throughout the world, but it is especially popular in the United States. The music industry here is, and has been, a multi–million dollar business that continues to play an important role in American popular culture. This is also a art form and business that is forever changing as the times and more importantly, technology changes. Technology has changed the way music is made as well as how it is produced,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many see it as a catchy rap song with a good beat, but the actual message it portrays would have many listeners and parents disgusted. The basic message of this song is that Fat Joe and Lil Wayne like to throw stacks of money at strippers and make it look like its raining in the club, hence the title of the song. These rappers are portraying the lifestyles of young, rich, defiant rap artists. A portion of the lyrics in the chorus are, "Got a handful of stacks better grab an umbrella. I make it rain, I make it rain (Oh), Make it rain on them hoes". This chorus is repeated multiple times throughout the entire song. This type of message and song does not fit in with the messages, goals, values and beliefs of the feminists movement and we see a clash between the music industry, specifically rap music, and the feminist movement before and after this song. Since the beginning of its art form rap music has been subject to scrutiny throughout its existence. In a Theresa Martinez reading from the semester, the author describes rap music as a resistance. She builds on a theory of oppositional culture that was composed by Bonnie Mitchell and Joe Feagin (1995). In this article, "POPULAR CULTURE AS OPPOSITIONAL CULTURE: Rap as Resistance", Martinez explains how African Americans, American Indians, and Mexican Americans draw on their own cultural resources to resist oppression. She states that this very resistance to the dominate culture in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Western Feminism Western Feminism – The Cancer in Our Society.–– there is no Tl;Dr. Don 't bother asking for one. Now before you all turn your eyes away and think I'm an oppressing, patriarchal, misogynistic, cock gobbling, women hating asshole, keep your eyes on the page and let me express my opinion in 4000 words. I'm not gay. The idea of equality for everyone is a noble one. Equality for race and gender, specifically, have been fought for for over a century. This simple idea of being able to live the way you want to without any constraints put on you just like any other person is a dream that we all know oh so well. The feminists on the other side of the world that are still fighting for their basic rights have my full and undivided support! But the idea of gender equality being driven here is fundamentally different than say race equality. The women here want complete and total equality, which is to say that everything we get, they get. But gender equality isn't as easy to achieve as race equality. While the culture behind different races are different, many other factors stay mainly the same, which is why race equality was fought so hard for. This is much different with the two genders, however. Inherently, males and females have little to no commonality. They behave psychologically different– as portrayed by how each gender would work in groups of their own gender, how they would work with the other gender, the decisions that they make, etc– are completely built different, and so ... • 39. Normalization Of Obesity Does it make sense for over a third of adult Americans, or 78.6 million people (Adult Obese Facts), to be classified as sick? In June of 2013 the American Medical Association classified obesity, the property of having a body mass index of 30 or higher, a disease. This decision went against the advice of its own Public Health and Science committee, which has led to widespread discussion of the classification of obesity (Stoner). In this new technological age, obesity has become normalized, yet still labeled a disease. Less time has been given to home cooked meals with more people eating unhealthy fast food than ever before. If we call obesity a disease, a number of factors will lead to the increased normalizing of it in society. Obesity should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A risk factor is an attribute, a characteristic, or a source of exposure that increases the likelihood of an injury or disease. For example, smoking is a preventable risk factor for lung cancer, obesity is a preventable risk factor for coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, type II Diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cancer, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, reproductive problems, and gallstones, (What Are the Health Risks). It may even be linked to other conditions that are not found to contain enough evidence to prove their correlation. Unlike other diseases, obesity can be easily treated due to it only being a weight issue. Obesity is caused by someone's own actions and can be eliminated the same way it was created. It is easily preventable and treatable. Other diseases must be treated with medications, special therapies, or surgeries. For instance, in the case of emphysema, there is no way to treat it fully after it has been diagnosed, the only treatments available just prolong the patient's inevitable death. Obesity doesn't require any of that. It can simply be treated by burning more calories than are eaten. Obesity and its side effects can be reversible and do not become intractable, unlike type II diabetes which has a high probability of occurring from obesity. The obesity part can be fixed forever, but the diabetes will never leave. Other diseases are caused by genetics or pathogens, obesity is simply caused by eating more calories than burned. Certain aspects of human genetics do not give excuses to be obese. Even if genetics enable obesity, it can still be overcome with a little more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
