The Legacy Of Soul Music
Soul is a music genre that over five decades or so remains very popular in the music industry. This
may be due to the fact that soul has had a huge impact upon other genres. Shuker defines soul as a
"secular version of gospel, soul was the major black musical form of the 1960s and 1970s and
remained evident in various hybrid styles since, for example, contemporary neo–soul and soul jazz
(312). The history of soul music is notable for producing a range of artists who have assisted
African–American societies with societal and political issues through the rise and fall of soul music.
In what follows, I will argue how soul music had a significant impact during the 1960s through
bringing together both the white and black subcultures. Firstly, through examining the history and
effects of slavery in the African–American societies. Secondly, by discussing the impact that two
Mahalia Jackson and Issac Hayes, have had on giving African–American society a voice and lastly,
discussing the assassination of Martin Luther King and the influence this tragedy has had on the
content of soul music and the message it delivers. I will draw on the work of Roy Shuker (2012),
particularly his notions of racism, gospel, motown and African–American; black music as key terms
that have allowed soul music to become such a prominent form, crucial to the contemporary
experience of popular music.
Once soul music entered the music industry in the 1960's, the rhythm and blues genre of the 1950s

African American Soul Music
Mostly any person you can start a conversation with on American soil has heard of soul music. Soul
music it's a traditional African American music and its gritty, vocal style filled with a feeling out of
black church. Soul music it's a style of popular music that originated in post–world war II American
and flourished during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and remained alive and
well today. Soul often has horn section and sometimes string, soul is more about naked emotion and
personal testimony. Ray Charles was changing the musical landscape by bringing musical elements
from the African American church together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soul music can find its roots in 2 different sources; racial. Geographical. Racial roots of soul music.
After slavery ended in 1865, African Americans weren't welcome in the churches of white
Americans, so they built their own churches and sang Christian songs with African–American vocal
styles and rhythms. They sang joyful, up–tempo gospel songs while clapping and moving to the
beat, and they sang slower gospel songs that expressed deep feelings like yearning for God's love.
These different styles led to the two main styles of soul music and that was early soul music. early
soul music were created when gospel song changed into secular songs by rewriting the lyrics so,
joyful gospel songs became tempo soul music ,and slower gospel song became romantic love

Peter Guralnick Sweet Soul Music Analysis
While standard music histories and biographies are a pleasant read and aid in the understanding of
the recordings many of us enjoy, they do little in the way to place music into its proper context. In
order to move music and sound recordings away from the notion of frivolity and pure entertainment,
its chroniclers and historians must understand its location in the larger narrative. By properly
placing the music and its creators into a larger historical, social, political, and economic context, it
brings dimension and perspective to not only the output but a fuller understanding of our past. In
order to succeed, the historian should reference many of the characteristics that make Peter
Guralnick's work, particularly Sweet Soul Music, such

The Life of Aretha Louise Franklin
Aretha Louise Franklin also known as the Queen of Soul was born on March 25, 1942 in Memphis
Tennessee. She is known for being a solo singer, and also a very talented pianist. Soul, R&B, Jazz,
and Gospel are genres that she sings. Throughout her career she signed with Colombia Records and
has released many popular singles that would now be considered classical. Aretha became the first

was recognized as a preacher and her talent was starting to peek out when she would sing at her
Father's congregation. She was mostly self–taught herself and was known to be a child prodigy, with
a nice voice and a gifted pianist. A few days after Franklin had just turned just fifteen years old, she
gave birth to her oldest son, Clerence. Two years later her second child was born, whom she named
Edward. The father of Clerence and Edward was never known, because Aretha never revealed the
man's identity. Both of her

Music And Music: Spirit, Soul, And Body
Spirit, Soul and Body
Music is the only medium that blesses both man and God at the same time and as such to see it as an
entertainment factor within our worship services is a gross misunderstanding of its purpose. Music
is made up of three elements: melody, harmony, and rhythm. Mankind is also made up of three
parts: spirit, soul and body (1 Thess 5:23). It can be argued that music and the triune, or trichotomy,
of mankind are intrinsically linked i.e. melody is likened to the spirit, harmony to the soul and
rhythm to the body. Let's look at the link between music and the triune man more closely.
1. Spirit and Melody
The word of God enables us to know God and be conscious of Him (Heb 4:12). The Bible explains
that God is a Spirit "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (Jn
4:24). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's almost impossible to recognise a tune without melody. In fact, whilst lecturing on this very
subject at a Bible Institute and Seminary, I did a little experiment. I played a well known tune just
using one note. Not surprisingly, none of the students recognised the tune until I began to play the
tune again with its melody. At that point everyone knew the song straightaway. This is the
importance of melody!
I believe that as we sing a song the melody affects and connects to the spirit of mankind as it is the
leading tune of a musical composition and delves deep in to the heart of a person when it is

Reverend Al Green Essay
From R&B to Ministry During the early 1970's legendary singer, songwriter, music producer and
minister, Reverend Al Green, dominated music charts with his classic hits of southern soul music.
Records including "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Love and Happiness," has
endlessly been passed down through generations of families predominantly in the African American
community (Dr. J). Although Green has had an enormously influential impact on the history of R&B
music, the eleven–time Grammy award winner decided to step away from soul music at the peak of
his career and rededicate his life to Christ. He strolled down many paths of which the religious
author, James Martin, refers to as the paths of belief, exploration, and return. To further understand
how Al Greens has explored each of these paths, this essay will analyze significant moments in the
life of Reverend Al Green. On April 13th, 1946 Albert Greene was born to Robert and Cora Greene
in Dansby, Arkansas(Biography.com). At the age of nine, Greene launched his music career by ...

Martin's paths of religious identity are a helpful tool to use when identifying one's journey and

doesn't lose faith in God or question God's existence, instead he continuously changed his lifestyle
to either become further or closer to god. What Green did have in common with Martin's ideology s

release, Whitney, in 1987. That record, too, went platinum many times over and won a Grammy for
the single "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," with a successful world tour
following. She continued to progress in her career, crossing over successfully into acting in 1992 by
starring opposite Kevin Costner in the wildly popular The Bodyguard. She set a trend for her films
to follow: For each movie she also released hit singles, creating sensational record sales for the
soundtracks. Her smash single from The Bodyguard, a cover of Dolly Parton's 1974 "I Will Always
Love You," proved to be Houston's biggest hit ever, spending a record–breaking 14 weeks atop the
U.S. charts. The soundtrack album went on to win Houston three Grammys, including Album of the

write before she started school and got Amy interested in mathematics. Even though, Amy was
considered to be a smart and clever girl, she dreaded school and thought it was boring and
unchallenging. She would often get in trouble because she would be disruptive in class when she
played jokes and was consisted to be a loud person. Then when she was in trouble she would get in
more trouble for singing since that was her way of calming herself down. This happened all

Music For The Soul By James Baldwin
Music for the Soul It is a common belief that the nurture aspect of our personal development has a
lot to do with the way we see ourselves and the habits we form due to our past experiences.
Unfortunately for Sonny, as well as for many other African Americans throughout history, even
before the 1950's, oppression had been a great burden to deal with on a day to day basis. In "Sonny's
Blues" the author James Baldwin provides us with a family whose lives revolve around this constant
reminder that they are a minority and therefore, live a completely different life in Harlem,
Manhattan New York where the influences and environment mainly keep one in trouble. Sonny was
the brave exception in the family who allowed himself to openly have a fervor for jazz and grows
spiritually, beyond the borders of restraint that oppression had placed on those who lived during
these times, his passion towards jazz music definitely deepened his connection to his community,
his cultural history, his family, and his interior consciousness.
Sonny's fascination with jazz and playing the piano became a safe haven for him as well as a coping
mechanism as for many other African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance. "Jazz continued
its development as a uniquely American art form in Harlem, where prominent nightclubs like the
Cotton Club featured great jazz composers like Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson. Their
music lured whites uptown to Harlem to share the excitement of the Jazz Age.... The

Aretha Franklin Analysis
Aretha Franklin – Respect
This song written and originally released artist Otis Redding in 1965. It wasn't until 1967 that this
song became a hit when R&B Aretha Franklin sang it. The song itself has the perfect features of a
pop song and more importantly is was a song that was perfect for a political movement theme. One
of the most important messages that is being delivered is that a black and strong woman was
seeking respect: "All I'm askin' Is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)".
Additionally, Aretha Franklin was showing her power towards men: "What you want, Baby, I got
it".
The initial intent of the lyrics showed a bad dynamic between a relationship, but Aretha Franklin
tweak and the emphasis on the word RESPECT sang by the chorus led for the initiation and was an
inspiration for the feminist movement.
Christina Aguilera – Can't Hold Us Down
Christina Aguilera released the song "Can't Hold Us Down" in 2003. The main idea of the song is to
criticize the gender–related double standards. While going through lyrics, Aguilera talks about the
double standard of women being expected to be home and not talk while men could say anything
they want: "So what am I not supposed to have an opinion / Should I be quiet just because I'm a
woman / Call me a b***h cos I speak what's on my mind / I guess it's easier for you to swallow if I
sat and smiled.". Additionally, she talks about the respect women should receive. On her lyrics, she

Soul Music In The 1960's
Soul Music in the 1960's
Throughout history, music has been a significant and defining factor of culture. Music has served as
a form entertainment, a method of storytelling, an organ of religion, and so much more (Booth 60).
The versatility and meaning of music gives it its defining power in society. Over time, music has
evolved into various genres. Most times, genres are a result of an adaptation, a response to a social
event, or a combination of both (Scaruffi). Some genres entertain a smaller audience than others,
and other genres attract the majority of the minority. An example of the latter is the genre of soul
music. Soul music can simply be defined as a hybridization of rhythm and blues, jazz, and gospel
genres of music (Bielawski 24). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By doing so, these artists furthered the sociopolitical movement for civil rights while creating
successes for themselves. "Soul music was enabled by the commercial boom of 'race' music, that
had led to the creation of channels and infrastructures run by black entrepreneurs for black artists
(Scaruffi)." Hence, the production of soul music was beneficial and profitable. There were many
soul music singers and musicians; however, some are recognized over others. For example, "one of
the most expressive male vocalists of the era, Marvin Gaye, [was] capable of impersonating the
party dancer, the romantic lover, the hostile mod/punk and the political activist." (Scaruffi) Also, the
legendary pianist and singer Ray Charles is a soul music legend. Ray Charles was a blind vocalist
from the South who began the trend of adding risqué lyrics to traditional gospel tunes (Scaruffi). In
addition to Ray Charles, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin were two headliners in the soul music
realm. Nina Simone, otherwise known as the "high priestess of soul", was known for bringing out
the rhythm and blues, as well as the jazz, roots in soul music (Bielawski 28). She is fairly
recognized for singing her share of controversial lyrics that described the trials of the black
community, e.g. her single "Mississippi Goddam" (Pruter 27 and Scaruffi). Aretha Franklin, also
known as "the Queen of Soul", was a "gospel singer from Detroit who converted into a soul music
singer when she began to utilize her former gospel training with aggressive vocals and romanticized
lyrics (Bielawski 25). These singers, as well as other singers like the Supremes, Smokey Robinson,
Norman Whitfield, Sam Cooke, and the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, created a genre through
the 1960s and 1970s that influenced musical generations to come (Handyside 13 and Scaruffi).

How Do Language Arts Act As Catalysts For Change?
"...poetry has primarily to do with the expression of feeling and emotion: and [...] feeling and
emotion are particular; whereas thought is general. It is easier to think in a foreign language than it
is to feel in it. Therefore, no art is more stubbornly national than poetry. A people may have its
language taken away from it, suppressed, and another language compelled upon the schools; but
unless you teach that people to feel in a new language, you have not eradicated the old one, and it
will reappear in poetry, which is a vehicle of feeling." (T.S. Eliot, On Poetry and Poets, London:
Faber and Faber: 5th Impression, 1959: 19) To what extent does the appeal to emotions that is
associated with poetry, song, humor, drama, or language arts in general, contribute to language
and/or cultural preservation? Conversely, in what ways do language arts reflect the society and also
act as catalysts for change? After the choir members finish performing a riveting gospel song about

Muriel's Wedding And The Sapphires Analysis
Muriel's Wedding and The Sapphires Comparative Essay
Muriel's Wedding (1994) and The Sapphires (2012) are both Australian made films that highlight the
ideas of different and diversity amongst people in the 90s and 60s respectively. Each film conveys
themes of discrimination, music and the story of outcasts rising above the typically popular clique.
Muriel Heslop is portrayed as a social outcast–the people she calls her friends are constantly telling
her she doesn't fit in and doesn't dress the right way. In this regard, the Sapphires can be compared
to her. When Julie, Cynthia and Gail perform in a talent show at a bar in town, the completely white
audience look away, roll their eyes or even walk straight out of the bar, purely because the girls are
Aboriginal. Afterwards, when a much less talented woman wins the competition, the compare tells
the outraged girls to "pack your swags and go back to your humpy". This reveals the compare's view
on Aborigines and the fact she believes that they live in a state of lower socioeconomic standing. It
is implied that others in the audience reflect this view, also, despite being ignorant to the Aborigines'
lifestyle. A similar attitude is displayed in Muriel's Wedding in the opening scene when Muriel
catches the wedding bouquet at one of the popular girl's weddings. She is told to give it to someone
else because she will "never get married". Both these scenes convey the discrimination towards
people with different social standing and looks to what was considered acceptable back then.
In both films, family plays an important part in the outcome of the story. Julie, Cynthia and Gail's
parents encourage their singing and performing as much as they can. They believe that their

One of the greatest contributions to our country's music industry was the creation of "Soul" music.
Soul music traces its roots back to African American gospel music. In 1865, slavery had ended but
African Americans were still not welcomed in churches that were for white Americans (Errey, n.d).
Because of this, African American built churches and within those churches they sang Christian
songs with their specific culture "rhythms and vocal styles" (Errey, n.d). These gospel songs had
both a fast up beat tempo which they would move to the beat and clap their hands and slower tempo
songs in which was a way to express their deep devotion to God. These two styles of gospel music
eventually lead to the two distinct styles of Soul music (Errey, n.d). ... Show more content on

Music and Memory: The Impression of the Soul
Franz Liszt once said "Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with
thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage
over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this
to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason.
Reason, after all, is restricted in the diversity of its means and is capable only of confirming or
describing our affections, not of communicating them directly in their full intensity. To accomplish
this even approximately, reason must search for images and comparisons. Music, on the other hand,
presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible
essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a
ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul." Music has been passed down from generation to
generation to show an audience beauty and associate with their emotions. My violin teacher
Brunilda Myftaraj once stated that I could play violin all day without ending and I would feel empty,
she advised that unless I connect with my audience than the music I'm playing has no exquisiteness
and means nothing to no–one. My teacher said a respectable performance is one in which the
audience is drawn into the beauty of the playing and adores the music so much that they effortlessly

Soul Music, Or Soul?
Soul music, or "Soul",was adopted to describe African–American popular music as it evolved from
the 1950s to the early 1970s. Although some people thought of "Soul" music as a new term for
Rhythm and Blues, it was not. In fact, the "key ingredient in Soul music, and the element that
defined it as a new style was the influence of gospel music." (1)This style of music was a blend
gospel music with the dance grooves of that era. However, Soul music during its heyday did more
than simply entertain. During the 1950's through the 1970 's, was also when the American Civil
Rights Movement was coming to a head. Because of the that, it impacted the musical styles which
reflected in the music and the culture of that era. So one would be correct in both assuming that the
Civil Rights Movement helped to give rise to Soul music, as much Soul music contributed to the
success of the campaign for civil rights. For a people in the African American community and for a
people immersed in turmoil and tragedy, it served as a source of motivation, strength and education.
The system of segregation had effectively inhibited the general populace's awareness of the great
achievements and contributions made by African–Americans throughout the history of the United
States. In as much, the artists of Soul music sought to bring things that were normally left in
darkness out and into the light for not only the nation but the world to see. "The first soul songs

Amy Winehouse Back To Black Analysis
Amy Winehouse Back to Black
Amy Winehouse is an old soul who inspired a new sound in a modern age. She manipulated
classical jazz with her hip–hop influences and her strong unique voice with lyrics from her life
experiences. These factors made her music unique and inspiring. Sadly in July of 2011, Amy passed
away at the young age of twenty seven, leaving behind her musical legacy. Back to Black is one of
her most popular albums that shows off her beautiful voice and thoughtful composition. Due to its
unique traits in modern music, it will continue to be played. This album is truly a work of art based
on Amy's use of meaningful lyrics in her songs, her strong unique voice, and her particular take on
jazz. I feel that Back to Black is an outstanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think this album is marvelous for a few reasons, one being her lyrics. The lyrics express struggles
within Amy's life that can be considered controversial. Amy would express and confront her
troubles in a fearless way within each song, which makes her music even more wonderful. In the
documentary film, Amy, they quoted her saying, "I wouldn't write anything unless it was directly
personal to me, just cause I wouldn't be able to tell the story right because I wouldn't have done it.
Even though the songs are personal, in a sad way, I'd never let it just be that. I'd always put in a
punch line in the song just trying to be different with my lyrics"(Winehouse). She spoke the truth
and showed her sincere attitude, which made her vulnerable, but made her real and unique. Amy's
main experience that effected the lyrics that she wrote was her ordeal with her ex husband Blake.
Her experience with Blake was clearly shown in the song Back to Black when Amy sang "You went
back to what you knew, so far removed from all that we went through"(Winehouse), which conveys
the way Amy felt when Blake left her to go back to his girlfriend. Another reason why I believe this
album is outstanding is due to Amy's powerful and distinctive voice. Her voice is strong and
charismatic. Her vocal style compares to that of a sixties soul singer. Amy's tone and mood is
expressed clearly through her voice. Even when she wasn't singing her lyrics, the sounds she made
within her songs expressed the mood. "Her voice glints with possibility: tart, smoky, ready to flirt or
sob, and capable of the jazzy timing of a Dinah Washington or the declamation of soul singers like
Martha Reeves and Carla Thomas"(Pareles). The main reason why I find this album most successful
is that there is no other album out there that sounds similar. "Ms. Winehouse has grown up on hip–

How Did Julie Andrews Impact The Music Community
Julie Andrews has left her mark on a myriad of awards, titles, roles, styles, and even beloved
characters we all know and love with her natural grace and elegance. She has also experienced one
of the most fruitful, illustrious careers of all time. But even more significantly, Andrews has
impacted the music community by bringing a new air of elegance to the stage, raising the bar of

Essay about Timeless Work: an Analysis of Marvin Gaye
Timeless Work: An Analysis of Marvin Gaye Marvin Gaye grew up surrounded by the art of music.
Born in the nations capital on April 2, 1939, Gaye's ageless sounds and intriguing vocals still
influence the world today. Gaye's father, a minister in the Apostolic Church, played a foremost role
in Marvin's musical education. In fact, most of Marvin's inspiration for religious topics came from
the church music he grew up singing. Through the art of song, musical icon Marvin Gaye uses
pathos, symbolism, and imagery with an objective to connect to listeners on tremendously personal
levels. Marvin Gaye's first hit "What's Going On?" makes use of symbolism in his general topic

It also pleads to let the people have their outlooks and views with out concern of being quieted or
attacked. In the song "Mercy, Mercy Me", imagery and symbolism exist as two key archetypes that
draw out the elements of pathos in Gaye's lyrics. The 1960's environmentalist, also known as
Hippies, opened America's eyes and revealed the gruesome lack of respect they exhibited towards
the Earth. Ignorant Americans used the planet as a dumping ground, unaware of the catastrophic
outcomes. Gaye wrote "Mercy, Mercy Me" from an environmentalists perspective and depicts a
devastating portrayal of mans unconstructive impact on the Earth using imagery. The imagery used
in "Mercy, Mercy Me" makes the mind ponder on how Gaye attempts to convince listeners to take a
more philosophical approach to life that emphasizes respect for others and the earth. He illustrates
the contamination of oceans and murder of marine life that remains a result of man's carelessness. A
decade before, these issues were not relevant to the Earth "Oh things ain't what they used to be", as
Gaye points out in "Mercy, Mercy Me". For example, in the 1960's countries began to industrialize
rapidly, which only meant additional factories and buildings resulting in excessive pollution in the
atmosphere. Gaye also uses the archetype symbolism in this quote: "Animals and birds who live
nearby are dying."(Gaye)

"Respect" by Aretha Franklin (1967) and "Try" by Colbie Caillat (2014). "Respect" was originally
written by Otis Redding (1965), but the reason I chose the Aretha Franklin version (1967) was to
use her voice and her style of music to set and relay the theme of women 's rights. "Try" is a Colbie
Caillat (2014) original which is about being yourself no matter what society thinks of you. Most
women obsess over their image because of how society has shaped us to think that we, as women,
should wear makeup and conform to society. Society has lowered women's confidence levels
because "social norms" consist of women wearing makeup, curling or straightening our hair, or
painting our nails. When we conform to the "social norms" we are lowering our confidence because
we feel as if we cannot go out in public without "making ourselves up". Both songs speak about the
same issue of women's rights; they also have the same tone of being respected, being worthy, and
being confident.
Some people think that respect is a value

The Legacy Of Soul Music

  • 1. The Legacy Of Soul Music Soul is a music genre that over five decades or so remains very popular in the music industry. This may be due to the fact that soul has had a huge impact upon other genres. Shuker defines soul as a "secular version of gospel, soul was the major black musical form of the 1960s and 1970s and remained evident in various hybrid styles since, for example, contemporary neo–soul and soul jazz (312). The history of soul music is notable for producing a range of artists who have assisted African–American societies with societal and political issues through the rise and fall of soul music. In what follows, I will argue how soul music had a significant impact during the 1960s through bringing together both the white and black subcultures. Firstly, through examining the history and effects of slavery in the African–American societies. Secondly, by discussing the impact that two Mahalia Jackson and Issac Hayes, have had on giving African–American society a voice and lastly, discussing the assassination of Martin Luther King and the influence this tragedy has had on the content of soul music and the message it delivers. I will draw on the work of Roy Shuker (2012), particularly his notions of racism, gospel, motown and African–American; black music as key terms that have allowed soul music to become such a prominent form, crucial to the contemporary experience of popular music. Once soul music entered the music industry in the 1960's, the rhythm and blues genre of the 1950s was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Soul music it's a traditional African American music and its gritty, vocal style filled with a feeling out of black church. Soul music it's a style of popular music that originated in post–world war II American and flourished during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and remained alive and well today. Soul often has horn section and sometimes string, soul is more about naked emotion and personal testimony. Ray Charles was changing the musical landscape by bringing musical elements from the African American church together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Soul music can find its roots in 2 different sources; racial. Geographical. Racial roots of soul music. After slavery ended in 1865, African Americans weren't welcome in the churches of white Americans, so they built their own churches and sang Christian songs with African–American vocal styles and rhythms. They sang joyful, up–tempo gospel songs while clapping and moving to the beat, and they sang slower gospel songs that expressed deep feelings like yearning for God's love. These different styles led to the two main styles of soul music and that was early soul music. early soul music were created when gospel song changed into secular songs by rewriting the lyrics so, joyful gospel songs became tempo soul music ,and slower gospel song became romantic love ... • 3. Peter Guralnick Sweet Soul Music Analysis While standard music histories and biographies are a pleasant read and aid in the understanding of the recordings many of us enjoy, they do little in the way to place music into its proper context. In order to move music and sound recordings away from the notion of frivolity and pure entertainment, its chroniclers and historians must understand its location in the larger narrative. By properly placing the music and its creators into a larger historical, social, political, and economic context, it brings dimension and perspective to not only the output but a fuller understanding of our past. In order to succeed, the historian should reference many of the characteristics that make Peter Guralnick's work, particularly Sweet Soul Music, such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Music And Music: Spirit, Soul, And Body Spirit, Soul and Body Music is the only medium that blesses both man and God at the same time and as such to see it as an entertainment factor within our worship services is a gross misunderstanding of its purpose. Music is made up of three elements: melody, harmony, and rhythm. Mankind is also made up of three parts: spirit, soul and body (1 Thess 5:23). It can be argued that music and the triune, or trichotomy, of mankind are intrinsically linked i.e. melody is likened to the spirit, harmony to the soul and rhythm to the body. Let's look at the link between music and the triune man more closely. 1. Spirit and Melody The word of God enables us to know God and be conscious of Him (Heb 4:12). The Bible explains that God is a Spirit "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (Jn 4:24). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's almost impossible to recognise a tune without melody. In fact, whilst lecturing on this very subject at a Bible Institute and Seminary, I did a little experiment. I played a well known tune just using one note. Not surprisingly, none of the students recognised the tune until I began to play the tune again with its melody. At that point everyone knew the song straightaway. This is the importance of melody! I believe that as we sing a song the melody affects and connects to the spirit of mankind as it is the leading tune of a musical composition and delves deep in to the heart of a person when it is ... Reverend Al Green Essay From R&B to Ministry During the early 1970's legendary singer, songwriter, music producer and minister, Reverend Al Green, dominated music charts with his classic hits of southern soul music. Records including "Let's Stay Together," "Tired of Being Alone," and "Love and Happiness," has endlessly been passed down through generations of families predominantly in the African American community (Dr. J). Although Green has had an enormously influential impact on the history of R&B music, the eleven–time Grammy award winner decided to step away from soul music at the peak of his career and rededicate his life to Christ. He strolled down many paths of which the religious author, James Martin, refers to as the paths of belief, exploration, and return. To further understand how Al Greens has explored each of these paths, this essay will analyze significant moments in the life of Reverend Al Green. • 15. Music For The Soul By James Baldwin Music for the Soul It is a common belief that the nurture aspect of our personal development has a lot to do with the way we see ourselves and the habits we form due to our past experiences. Unfortunately for Sonny, as well as for many other African Americans throughout history, even before the 1950's, oppression had been a great burden to deal with on a day to day basis. In "Sonny's Blues" the author James Baldwin provides us with a family whose lives revolve around this constant reminder that they are a minority and therefore, live a completely different life in Harlem, Manhattan New York where the influences and environment mainly keep one in trouble. Sonny was the brave exception in the family who allowed himself to openly have a fervor for jazz and grows spiritually, beyond the borders of restraint that oppression had placed on those who lived during these times, his passion towards jazz music definitely deepened his connection to his community, his cultural history, his family, and his interior consciousness. Sonny's fascination with jazz and playing the piano became a safe haven for him as well as a coping mechanism as for many other African Americans during the Harlem Renaissance. "Jazz continued its development as a uniquely American art form in Harlem, where prominent nightclubs like the Cotton Club featured great jazz composers like Duke Ellington and Fletcher Henderson. The song itself has the perfect features of a pop song and more importantly is was a song that was perfect for a political movement theme. One of the most important messages that is being delivered is that a black and strong woman was seeking respect: "All I'm askin' Is for a little respect when you get home (just a little bit)". Additionally, Aretha Franklin was showing her power towards men: "What you want, Baby, I got it". The initial intent of the lyrics showed a bad dynamic between a relationship, but Aretha Franklin tweak and the emphasis on the word RESPECT sang by the chorus led for the initiation and was an inspiration for the feminist movement. • 18. Soul Music In The 1960's Soul Music in the 1960's Throughout history, music has been a significant and defining factor of culture. Music has served as a form entertainment, a method of storytelling, an organ of religion, and so much more (Booth 60). The versatility and meaning of music gives it its defining power in society. Over time, music has evolved into various genres. Most times, genres are a result of an adaptation, a response to a social event, or a combination of both (Scaruffi). Some genres entertain a smaller audience than others, and other genres attract the majority of the minority. An example of the latter is the genre of soul music. Soul music can simply be defined as a hybridization of rhythm and blues, jazz, and gospel genres of music (Bielawski 24). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By doing so, these artists furthered the sociopolitical movement for civil rights while creating successes for themselves. "Soul music was enabled by the commercial boom of 'race' music, that had led to the creation of channels and infrastructures run by black entrepreneurs for black artists (Scaruffi)." Hence, the production of soul music was beneficial and profitable. There were many soul music singers and musicians; however, some are recognized over others. For example, "one of the most expressive male vocalists of the era, Marvin Gaye, [was] capable of impersonating the party dancer, the romantic lover, the hostile mod/punk and the political activist." (Scaruffi) Also, the legendary pianist and singer Ray Charles is a soul music legend. Ray Charles was a blind vocalist from the South who began the trend of adding risqué lyrics to traditional gospel tunes (Scaruffi). In addition to Ray Charles, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin were two headliners in the soul music realm. Nina Simone, otherwise known as the "high priestess of soul", was known for bringing out the rhythm and blues, as well as the jazz, roots in soul music (Bielawski 28). She is fairly recognized for singing her share of controversial lyrics that described the trials of the black community, e.g. her single "Mississippi Goddam" (Pruter 27 and Scaruffi). Aretha Franklin, also known as "the Queen of Soul", was a "gospel singer from Detroit who converted into a soul music singer when she began to utilize her former gospel training with aggressive vocals and romanticized lyrics (Bielawski 25). These singers, as well as other singers like the Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Norman Whitfield, Sam Cooke, and the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, created a genre through the 1960s and 1970s that influenced musical generations to come (Handyside 13 and Scaruffi). ... • 19. How Do Language Arts Act As Catalysts For Change? "...poetry has primarily to do with the expression of feeling and emotion: and [...] feeling and emotion are particular; whereas thought is general. It is easier to think in a foreign language than it is to feel in it. Therefore, no art is more stubbornly national than poetry. A people may have its language taken away from it, suppressed, and another language compelled upon the schools; but unless you teach that people to feel in a new language, you have not eradicated the old one, and it will reappear in poetry, which is a vehicle of feeling." (T.S. Eliot, On Poetry and Poets, London: Faber and Faber: 5th Impression, 1959: 19) To what extent does the appeal to emotions that is associated with poetry, song, humor, drama, or language arts in general, contribute to language and/or cultural preservation? Conversely, in what ways do language arts reflect the society and also act as catalysts for change? • 20. Muriel's Wedding And The Sapphires Analysis Muriel's Wedding and The Sapphires Comparative Essay Muriel's Wedding (1994) and The Sapphires (2012) are both Australian made films that highlight the ideas of different and diversity amongst people in the 90s and 60s respectively. Each film conveys themes of discrimination, music and the story of outcasts rising above the typically popular clique. Muriel Heslop is portrayed as a social outcast–the people she calls her friends are constantly telling her she doesn't fit in and doesn't dress the right way. In this regard, the Sapphires can be compared to her. When Julie, Cynthia and Gail perform in a talent show at a bar in town, the completely white audience look away, roll their eyes or even walk straight out of the bar, purely because the girls are Aboriginal. Afterwards, when a much less talented woman wins the competition, the compare tells the outraged girls to "pack your swags and go back to your humpy". This reveals the compare's view on Aborigines and the fact she believes that they live in a state of lower socioeconomic standing. It is implied that others in the audience reflect this view, also, despite being ignorant to the Aborigines' lifestyle. A similar attitude is displayed in Muriel's Wedding in the opening scene when Muriel catches the wedding bouquet at one of the popular girl's weddings. She is told to give it to someone else because she will "never get married". Both these scenes convey the discrimination towards people with different social standing and looks to what was considered acceptable back then. In both films, family plays an important part in the outcome of the story. Julie, Cynthia and Gail's parents encourage their singing and performing as much as they can. They believe that their daughters and niece, Kay, could make a difference. The father giving the girls a chance to chase their aspiration by allowing them to go into the perilous warzones in Vietnam is an example of just how far their parents' support goes. Muriel's family also has a huge effect on her eventual success but in a negative matter. The constant disapproval from her father drives Muriel to make herself good enough to please him and the rest of her family. Once Muriel loses respect for her father, she becomes ... • 25. Soul Music Research Paper One of the greatest contributions to our country's music industry was the creation of "Soul" music. Soul music traces its roots back to African American gospel music. In 1865, slavery had ended but African Americans were still not welcomed in churches that were for white Americans (Errey, n.d). Because of this, African American built churches and within those churches they sang Christian songs with their specific culture "rhythms and vocal styles" (Errey, n.d). These gospel songs had both a fast up beat tempo which they would move to the beat and clap their hands and slower tempo songs in which was a way to express their deep devotion to God. • 26. Music and Memory: The Impression of the Soul Franz Liszt once said "Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason. Reason, after all, is restricted in the diversity of its means and is capable only of confirming or describing our affections, not of communicating them directly in their full intensity. To accomplish this even approximately, reason must search for images and comparisons. Music, on the other hand, presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul." Music has been passed down from generation to generation to show an audience beauty and associate with their emotions. My violin teacher Brunilda Myftaraj once stated that I could play violin all day without ending and I would feel empty, she advised that unless I connect with my audience than the music I'm playing has no exquisiteness and means nothing to no–one. Although some people thought of "Soul" music as a new term for Rhythm and Blues, it was not. In fact, the "key ingredient in Soul music, and the element that defined it as a new style was the influence of gospel music." (1)This style of music was a blend gospel music with the dance grooves of that era. However, Soul music during its heyday did more than simply entertain. During the 1950's through the 1970 's, was also when the American Civil Rights Movement was coming to a head. Because of the that, it impacted the musical styles which reflected in the music and the culture of that era. So one would be correct in both assuming that the Civil Rights Movement helped to give rise to Soul music, as much Soul music contributed to the success of the campaign for civil rights. For a people in the African American community and for a people immersed in turmoil and tragedy, it served as a source of motivation, strength and education. The system of segregation had effectively inhibited the general populace's awareness of the great achievements and contributions made by African–Americans throughout the history of the United States. In as much, the artists of Soul music sought to bring things that were normally left in darkness out and into the light for not only the nation but the world to see. She spoke the truth and showed her sincere attitude, which made her vulnerable, but made her real and unique. Amy's main experience that effected the lyrics that she wrote was her ordeal with her ex husband Blake. Her experience with Blake was clearly shown in the song Back to Black when Amy sang "You went back to what you knew, so far removed from all that we went through"(Winehouse), which conveys the way Amy felt when Blake left her to go back to his girlfriend. Another reason why I believe this album is outstanding is due to Amy's powerful and distinctive voice. Her voice is strong and charismatic. Her vocal style compares to that of a sixties soul singer. Amy's tone and mood is expressed clearly through her voice. Even when she wasn't singing her lyrics, the sounds she made within her songs expressed the mood. "Her voice glints with possibility: tart, smoky, ready to flirt or sob, and capable of the jazzy timing of a Dinah Washington or the declamation of soul singers like Martha Reeves and Carla Thomas"(Pareles). The main reason why I find this album most successful is that there is no other album out there that sounds similar. "Ms. Winehouse has grown up on hip– hop's version of R&B, which chops the old dramatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A jam–packed house of parents, music luminaries, vinyl geeks and city leaders gather to celebrate the 100th birthday of the now deceased Memphis soul singer and radio legend Rufus Thomas. • 34. How Did Julie Andrews Impact The Music Community Julie Andrews has left her mark on a myriad of awards, titles, roles, styles, and even beloved characters we all know and love with her natural grace and elegance. She has also experienced one of the most fruitful, illustrious careers of all time. But even more significantly, Andrews has impacted the music community by bringing a new air of elegance to the stage, raising the bar of vocal ability standards internationally, and expressing the beauty of music through her impeccable, crystalline voice. Born on October 1st, 1935, to Barbara Ward Wells (a pianist) and Edward Charles (Ted) Wells in Walton–On–Thames, Surrey, England. Barbara and Ted divorced soon after the outbreak of World War II, and Barbara was remarried to Ted Andrews, who would make an essential and insurmountable impact on young Andrew's life. Back when the now seventy–nine–year old performer was only eight, her stepfather decided to get her singing lessons. Her teacher Lillian Stiles–Allen was hired promptly and began instructing young Andrews in operatic techniques. Born in the nations capital on April 2, 1939, Gaye's ageless sounds and intriguing vocals still influence the world today. Gaye's father, a minister in the Apostolic Church, played a foremost role in Marvin's musical education. In fact, most of Marvin's inspiration for religious topics came from the church music he grew up singing. Through the art of song, musical icon Marvin Gaye uses pathos, symbolism, and imagery with an objective to connect to listeners on tremendously personal levels. It also pleads to let the people have their outlooks and views with out concern of being quieted or attacked. In the song "Mercy, Mercy Me", imagery and symbolism exist as two key archetypes that draw out the elements of pathos in Gaye's lyrics. The 1960's environmentalist, also known as Hippies, opened America's eyes and revealed the gruesome lack of respect they exhibited towards the Earth. Ignorant Americans used the planet as a dumping ground, unaware of the catastrophic outcomes. Gaye wrote "Mercy, Mercy Me" from an environmentalists perspective and depicts a devastating portrayal of mans unconstructive impact on the Earth using imagery. The imagery used in "Mercy, Mercy Me" makes the mind ponder on how Gaye attempts to convince listeners to take a more philosophical approach to life that emphasizes respect for others and the earth. He illustrates the contamination of oceans and murder of marine life that remains a result of man's carelessness. A decade before, these issues were not relevant to the Earth "Oh things ain't what they used to be", as Gaye points out in "Mercy, Mercy Me". For example, in the 1960's countries began to industrialize rapidly, which only meant additional factories and buildings resulting in excessive pollution in the atmosphere. Gaye also uses the archetype symbolism in this quote: "Animals and birds who live nearby are dying."(Gaye) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Demanding Rights From The Beginning : Franklin And Caillat... Demanding Rights from the Beginning: Franklin and Caillat Fight for Respect We hear all the time that we learn from our past, but is that true? Inequalities have been around for thousands of years; we are still surrounded by prejudice and differences every day. So do we truly learn from our past? Women's rights and women's equality issues have been around for a long time because of the need for respect, equality and voting rights. Two songs relating these issues include "Respect" by Aretha Franklin (1967) and "Try" by Colbie Caillat (2014). "Respect" was originally written by Otis Redding (1965), but the reason I chose the Aretha Franklin version (1967) was to use her voice and her style of music to set and relay the theme of women 's rights. "Try" is a Colbie Caillat (2014) original which is about being yourself no matter what society thinks of you. Most women obsess over their image because of how society has shaped us to think that we, as women, should wear makeup and conform to society. Society has lowered women's confidence levels because "social norms" consist of women wearing makeup, curling or straightening our hair, or painting our nails. When we conform to the "social norms" we are lowering our confidence because we feel as if we cannot go out in public without "making ourselves up". Both songs speak about the same issue of women's rights; they also have the same tone of being respected, being worthy, and being confident. Some people think that respect is a value ...
