Harvey Captain Courageous Quotes
Passage 1: from Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling, adapted by Malvina G. Vogel Harvey is
a rich, young boy who is used to having servants. He is traveling on a steamship in the late 1900s.
When he gets sick and falls overboard, a local fishing crew rescues him and safely brings him
aboard their boat. Disko Troop is the captain of this rescue boat. The boat is called We're Here, and
Dan Troop, his son, tries to help Harvey out. 1 "I'm Dan Troop," said the boy, "and my father's
captain of the We're Here. I'm the cook's helper and do everything the other men won't do," he added
proudly. 2 When Harvey finished eating, Dan made him stretch in every direction to find if he had

Shirley Bogart Tom has always wanted to be a prince, and Prince Edward envies Tom for his
freedom. Tom and Prince Edward look remarkably alike. When the two have the opportunity to
meet, they begin to talk about changing places. 15 "Tell me more," the prince said eagerly. "What do
you do with your friends?" 16 "We sometimes have stick fights and we run races. In the summer, we
go wading in the canals. We have water battles in the river, splashing each other all over the place."
17 "How I would love that!" cried Edward. "If only I could do those things–just once! But go on."
18 "And at the river's edge, we bury each other in the sand and make pies with lovely, oozing mud.
There's nothing like it for fun in the whole world."

Summary Of Jules Verne 's ' France '
Noah Lewis

XX November 2016
PLACEHOLDER TITLE
Jules Verne, of France, was a prominent author who produced over 60 novels along with multiple
plays and short stories. Verne was born in February of 1828, amidst the Industrial Revolution, in a
port city called Nantes. An environment like this undoubtedly helped to spark Verne's near
unquenchable desire for adventure and travel, a key component of his life until its end in 1905.
However, Jules Verne experienced his share of bumps and potholes on his road to glory. Verne had
moved to Paris to get a degree in law, but shortly after he ended up working in the arts even with
pressure from his parents to continue his studies. With that door eventually closing Verne took up a
job as a secretary and even a stockbroker to support himself and his family. Finally finding a stable
position, Verne and his wife took roughly 20 trips to the British Isles, which ended up as a solid
source for writing material. Verne's thirst for adventure reached the point where he bought his own
boat, drawing on his travels all the way from British Isles to the Mediterranean to create more
novels. The novels known as Journey to the Center of the Earth and From the Earth to the Moon
were influenced by Verne's experiences and travels. Other titles such as Twenty Thousand Leagues
Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days added to Verne's prestige. The pinnacle of his
fame is tied to his main series of novels, the 54 belonging

The The Wreck of the Medusa Essay
"In the moonlight's ghostly glow,
I waken in a dream.
Once more upon the raft I stand,
Upon the raging sea.
In my ears the moans and screams
Of the dying ring,
Somewhere in the darkness
The siren softly sings..."
"The architects of our doom
Around their tables sit,
And in their thrones of power,
Condemn those they've cast adrift.
Echoes down the city street,
Their Harpies laughter rings.
Waiting for the curtain call,
Oblivious in the wings."
Excerpt from the lyrics, "The Wake of the Medusa", By The Pogues
"The Raft of the Medusa", by Theodore Gericault, 1819, was inspired by the catastrophic wreck of
the French frigate, The Medusa, on July 2, 1816, off the west coast of Africa, during a voyage to
Senagal. The ship ran aground on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A raft was constructed from the masts and crossbeams of The Medusa, to carry the crew, soldiers
and some of the passengers. Due to there only being six lifeboats aboard, the dignitaries, their
families and other higher ranking officials took possession of them, leaving approximately 150
members for the raft. Seventeen crewmen decided, for whatever reason, to remain on The Medusa.
Those in the lifeboats quickly decided that towing the raft was impractical, and Governor Schmaltz,
not Captain De Chaumereys, was the first to drop the tow line to the raft, leaving it to the cruelty of
the open sea.
On the raft, the situation quickly deteriorated, and panic consumed those aboard. Fighting broke out,
provisions were destroyed and the Raft of the Medusa's infamous voyage commenced.
The first night 20 men were killed, or committed suicide, in a struggle to defeat terror, fear and
dread. The undisciplined soldiers quickly staged a mutiny, eventually committed cannibalism and
other atrocities, and 13 days later, 15 of the original 150 that went into the ocean survived to be
rescued.
The following material is from eye witness accounts of two of The Medusa's survivors, the ship's
Surgeon, Henri Savigny and ship's Geographer, Alexander Correard. Much of the testimony of the
two survivors was released to an anti–Bourbon newspaper, resulting in a scandal and political
cover–up, and the court martial of Captain De Chaumereys.

Cultural Mirror And Hidden Intent
¬ Comics : Cultural Mirror and Hidden Intent
Cul¬tural texts are objects, actions, and behav¬iors that reveal cul¬tural mean¬ings. An entire

was dominated by Jewish artists and writers who, knowing their brethren in Europe were being
targeted by the Nazis, felt helpless. They wanted America to join the Allied Forces and go to war,
but couldn't do much about the US policy of non–interference at the time. Hence, Captain America
came into existence. Steven had been born on July 4, 1922 in the lower east side of Manhattan to
poor Irish immigrant parents. He was an orphan by the time he was in his teens and, disturbed by the
rise of the Nazi party, desperate to fight against them. His repeated attempts to enlist in the army,
however, were rejected because he couldn't pass the physical. Steve's persistence, however, paid off
when he was selected to be a test subject for a super–soldier project – where a special serum created
by a Professor Reinstein would instantly and permanently turn him into a stronger and faster soldier
codenamed Captain America. Every superhero needs an evil to fight, and for Joe Simon, that evil
was Adolf Hitler. And in the very first issue of Captain America dated March 1941 – 9 months
before America joined WWII – we see Steve punching the Nazi leader. This verse shows the
propaganda angle in the Captain America Comics. Not just that, the costume shows Rogers wearing
the stars and stripes not just as his uniform, but also on his shield, which he uses not just for defense,
but also as an effective weapon. Literally, it symbolizes what happens when America throws its
might at the

Childhood Is Seen As A Horror Experience
Childhood is often seen as a carefree time where children are able to grow and learn from the world
around them. Many people have fond memories of their time as a child and would do anything to
get it back. However, in Barrie's Peter Pan, childhood is seen as a horror experience. This novel is
read in stark contrast to Walt Disney's popular movie version of Peter Pan. Disney's version shows
three children on the adventure of their life. But, Barrie's Peter Pan is the exemplar of the childhood
horror experience because of the actions of the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling, the actions of the
character Captain James Hook, and the dangers inherent of being a child in this anarchistic place
called Neverland. With a name like "Darling" one may assume that the holder of that name would be
an inherently good person. However, this is not the case with the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling
in Barrie's Peter Pan. The behavior of these two characters toward their own children allows the true
childhood horror experience to be shown. For example, when Wendy Darling was born, Mr.
Darling's first action as a father was to calculate whether or not he and his wife could afford to keep
their infant daughter. With his wife still in bed, Mr. Darling ". . . sat on the edge of Mrs. Darling's
bed, holding her hand and calculating expenses, while she looked at him imploringly" (Barrie 8).
This action from Mr. Darling expressed the horrible truth that he valued any wealth that he and his

The Shipm An Older Man Who Walked With The Most Subtle Essay
The Shipman was an older man who walked with the most subtle of limps in his step. His eyes
twinkled when spoke of the sea and of his family. When he laughed, his whole body shook. He was
a friendly sort and spoke easily with most of the company, only seeming to become quiet around
those he considered vile, such as the Doctor or any that spoke wrongly of a woman or Ethiopian.
Some of the company teased him about his quick fingers and how he used them to take wine from
the captain's quarters, and he simply glowed with pride. When it was his turn to tell a tale, the
company gathered around eagerly. Each was certain that someone so experienced would know a few
great ones. However, an unusual bashfulness came over the man, as if he forgot he would have to
tell a tale at all. After a few playful jibes, though, he began to speak.
The Shipman's Tale
Many years ago, in a village that was not too different from any other, there lived a poor son of
blacksmith named Fendrel who dreamt of being a knight. The other villagers looked down upon the
lad for his aspirations, citing his father's occupation and his mother's birthplace as their reasons, yet
he paid little attention to their scoffing. He trained, night and day, until he was the best horserider
and fighter the village had to boast about.
Of course, the better he became, the more word of his skill spread throughout the kingdom.
Eventually, rumor of a lad already more capable than all of the kingsman reached the ear of the

Discipline Is Vital To Parenting In Ray Bradbury's The Veldt
Discipline is Vital to Parenting In today's society, parents that do not discipline their children are
perceived as nonchalant, or carefree. Ray Bradbury, an acclaimed writer, disagrees with this
concept. Instead, Bradbury would say that discipline is a vital component of parenting, and without
it, children will commit awful acts. With the use of foreshadowing and allusion in his short story,
"The Veldt", Bradbury depicts that a lack of discipline leads to horrendous, potentially deadly
consequences. Bradbury foreshadows the parents' fatal deaths to develop the repercussions they face
for not disciplining Wendy and Peter. For instance, after the Hadleys have dinner, the parents head to
the nursery and find George's old wallet with "drops of saliva" and "blood smears on both sides"
(Bradbury 8). The disturbing state George and Lydia find the wallet in hints that something is wrong
with the nursery and that the virtual animals can affect real life objects. Bradbury also adds the
following dialogue between the parents: "'Those screams–they sound familiar.' 'Do they?' 'Yes,
awfully'" (9). The two screams Mr. and Mrs. Hadley heard were strikingly familiar because they
were their own screams, hinting that the children wanted them dead and that the lions in the nursery
were going to kill them. Throughout "The Veldt", the parents hardly discipline their children, or care
for them, causing the children to despise them and develop a rotten character. Had the parents
properly ruled

describing everything that is going on in her life. She had believed for years that her mother had
passed away when she was quite young. Eldora lived with a very nice couple who had been very

story, Aunt, Uncle, and Eldora all packed up their belongings from their home in New Bedford,
Massachusetts and left for a new life in the chaotic city of San Francisco, California.
One day, Eldora received a letter from her mother explaining a lot of unanswered questions. Eldora
was thrilled to know that her mother was not dead, and was alive and quite well. Eldora's mother
said that she would soon come by to pay Eldora a visit and to tell her why she had been unable to
care for her the past few years. However every time she was due to visit, she would have something
come up and not be able to visit. Until after about the 3rd reschedule, when she was finally able to
come into the city for a visit. Eldora was scintillating with happiness and very eager to see her
mother for the first time in what felt like forever. When she saw her mother and she immediately

Aunt seemed to have quite a few questions about why and how everything had happened. So mother

What Is Kipling's View Of American Imperialism?

India in 1865. Kipling was born during an age of British Imperialism in India (McNamara and

Britain. Throughout his lifetime Kipling lived in Britain, India, and the United States of America

After Kipling attended this military school he wished to join the British military, however, he was
never able to, because of his nearsightedness. Upset, he then decided to go a regular and cheap

military career, he urged his son, John, to join the British military. John, in the end, did join the

volunteering for the Red Cross, Kipling befriended the chief architect during the Boer War

works that highlighted the military, poems such as "The Declaration of London" and "The Day's

described how the soldiers felt after winning the Boer War; how the soldiers were tired and should

Analysis Of John Locke 's ' The Cold Soldier And Douglas...
John Locke argues in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, that personal identity is
contingent upon the memories that people form. In essence, the ever–changing body is not a factor
into defining who a person is. The consciousness of a subject puts memory into motion and thus,
creating his or her identity. The main ideas behind Locke's theory are still discussed today. However,
fictional characters in movies prove that it they are inadequate. Prominent examples include: Neo in
The Matrix, Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Douglas Quail in "We Will
Remember It for You Whole Sale." These characters set a precedence that confirms the invalidity of
Locke's theory as their identities are not based their continuous ... Show more content on

However, the extensive abilities Neo acquired in the Matrix, most notably the ability to dodge
bullets, proves that he lives, thinks, and occupies his body in the Matrix. This evidence suggests that
the body more than just a framework for memories. It also makes his experiences tangible, by
providing a gateway to perceive the world around him. Neo has a more intimate connection to his
body than Locke's theory articulates, and precluding it causes detriment to his personal identity.
Neo's experience with his new body in the Matrix is immense. As he syncs into his new body, he
immediately grasps the sense of how it operates when Cypher uploads presets of knowledge into
brain. He is unsurprised by his body's instant mastery of martial arts and rashly challenges
Morpheus in a sparring match. Any blind jump into a recently learned task would prove
disorientating and frustrating. However, this is not the case, as Neo effortlessly displays adept
fighting skills and eventually defeats Morpheus. Additionally, he requires no training wheels to
adjust to any other task he performs within the Matrix. This challenges the legitimacy of Locke's
theory as Neo's subjective consciousness interprets a new method of how to direct himself in the
Matrix. In the final scene, Trinity's love resurrects Neo, signifying that the body plays an integral
part in constructing personal identity. Trinity's love, along with the

question most others would laugh at, find absurd and childish. A question every child to ever live

that childish of a question. Is it truly childish to wonder and believe in such things? Or is it truly a

Why Captain Nemo Created The Nautilus?
When Monsieur Aronnax first discovered why Captain Nemo created the Nautilus, he couldn't
believe it. The fact that the Nautilus was built out of vengeance and anger seemed odd for Captain
Nemo's usually high spirit. It's proved that men have to fight nature's obstacles along with man, and
this can only be done by courage, strength, and logic. Most of the book occurs with the characters

The Korengal Valley is a mountain passage located to the south of the Pech River in the Pech

Kearney established a strong relationship between the United States Army and the Government of
Afghanistan in order to "support the local populace through enhancement, humanitarian assistance
handouts, and a weekly shura to address issues in the valley." These methods were intended to aid
the overall goal of Battle Company's mission, to defeat the Anti–Coalition Militia forces that had
entrenched themselves in the valley, and to increase the Government of Afghanistan's overall
presence within the Kunar Province.
Battle Company faced one of the hardest conflicts of the entire War in Afghanistan. The men of
Battle Company could expect, on average, "1.5 kinetic engagements per day." Though even in
firefights, the battle for the "human terrain" came into play. On July 10, 2007, Battle Company took
fire from a three–story mansion that belonged to Haji Matin, a timber baron with ties to insurgent
forces within the valley. This presented a problem as the United States Army had made the promise
that it would bomb the homes of the Korengali locals. Captain Kearney attempted to keep this
promise. "My guys would tell me they didn't know which houses they're shooting from, and I'd tell
them they can't shoot back into the villages," Kearney told a reporter, Elizabeth Ruben,

Descriptive Essay About Crash
"See you later Mom, love you Dad." As I start up the engine of my small plane that I had bought
after getting my license I started my 2,000 mile journey across the Atlantic ocean. I take off from
Jackson Mississippi airport and in an instant in 10,000 feet above sea level. I turn on auto pilot and
take a nap.
I jolt up to a loud siren and a red flashing red light. The aircraft that I was in is heading for an island
that was not marked on my radar. The smoke from the engine is puffed up in my face and my wing
is on fire, how this happened, I don't know. There was never a sign of the engine overheating and
not a single bird in the air. As I was free falling in my plane I had to think fast, so I jumped out of
the plane and parachuted on to the beach. My broken down plane flew over my head with a tale of
smoke and barrel rolled into the dark forest of this new founded island. I start a journey to the crash
site to try to recover as much as I could. That was when I saw him, the Gragle. The Gragle was said
to be an alien that had come from another galaxy far far away. He has enormous hands that are none
like a human's and a stench that could be smelt from a mile away. He had eight deep purple eyes that
stared into your soul and legend was told that he has taken lives of many, but none have reported a
sighting of him. I never believed in him, but many others did. And now that he's standing right here
in front of me, I could only stand in fear.(13)

The Open Boat By Stephen Crane
The Open Boat Analysis The Open Boat is a wildly creative text. The author explores fiction and
philosophy to achieve a balance of literature professionalism. The text is a masterpiece reality
expressed through the creation of characters representatives of society and day to day living.
Symbolic use of characters and human titles plays a key role in delivering the message of the author.
Stephen Crane, the author exploits the power of harmony to establish a relationship where every
individual is a unit within a literally functional setting. The author speaks about significant issues in
society; more so, about the events that have affected his life. According to Alison and Mays (247),
the characters in "The Open Boat" are vehicles designed to convey concepts about the society's
functionality. They facilitate thematic and plot development to reveal the place of man in society
and express nature as being apathetic to man. These ideological concepts are achieved by
understanding the elements of society as being mutually dependent. The Correspondent, The
Captain, Billie, and The Cook come up as the vital parts of the author`s chosen setting. This crew of
sailors is motivated by the desire to survive but lacks adequate knowledge of the geography of the
sea; they get through by ensuring that every individual is keen to do their part in the stressful
environment. The Captain is a symbol of leadership and struggles relentlessly to maintain his
position amongst the crew members. He

Theme And Meaning Of Peter Pan
Theme and Meaning Peter Pan is a timeless tale in which transcends time and culture through its'
underlying themes. Each of the characters fulfilled their roles tremendously, and was able to bring
forth these themes in their own unique ways. The most apparent, from the beginning, is the
emphasis of youthfulness. Peter is the main embodiment of this theme, given he does not physically
age. From the beginning, his role was that to entice Wendy and her siblings to journey with him to
Never–never land. What this magical place represents is a state of remaining youthful forever, and
not letting society conform one's beliefs. The concept of age is masked by Peter's stubbornness to
not conform to such. For example, Wendy wants to get married and have kids one day; Peter does
not. Wendy wants this because she is taught from a young age that this is a common normality of
life. Peter refusing to stay at the house with the other lost boys, in the end, showed that such
normality does not have to be one's choice. This theme was conveyed by the play being both a
comedy and a musical. These two forms of drama brought with it both wittiness and purity, both of
which are a direct correlation youthfulness. And the character's ability to sing with clarity helped
boost such a message. The role such clarity played is relevant to American culture, today. In order
for people to listen, in a society with so much information, a message must be clear and transparent.

The Alegorical Nature of O Captain! My Captain! by Walt...
Explication of "O Captain! My Captain!" "O Captain! My Captain!" is one of the most popular
poems ever written by Walt Whitman. Upon the initial reading of this poem, one may perceive the
poem to be about a loyal captain who leads his crew on a treacherous, but successful, voyage which
ends in devastation. If interpreted literally this is the poem's only meaning, but for those who look
further there is an underlying story behind the words of Whitman. Whitman uses multiple literary
elements throughout this poem in order to unmask the story of Abraham Lincoln's journey and
ultimate death as a result of the Civil War and his fight to end slavery. The title of the poem, "O
Captain! My Captain!" , insinuates that the poem will be centered ... Show more content on

The speaker states, "Rise up – for you the flag is flung– for you the bugle trills" (line 10). This is
interpreted as the ending of the war due to the patriotic symbolism of the flag which stands for
freedom and also victory. Within this stanza, the importance of the captain is now extended from
just the speaker to all those who await the ship's arrival. This is demonstrated as the speaker states,
"For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning" (lines 11–12). The joyful tone of the
stanza ceases towards the end as an unexpected downfall of emotions begins. Whitman uses
repetition in lines 15 and 16 when he states "It is some dream that on the deck, / You've fallen cold
and dead" (lines 15–16). This serves as a disturbing reminder that the figure which was most
significant to the entire situation is no longer alive. The depressing realization of the captain's death
is evident and seen most within the last stanza as the tone changes from that of triumph and elation
to heartbreak and grief. This is shown through Whitman's use of imagery as the speaker states, "My
Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, / My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse
nor will" (lines 17–18). This provides a detailed description of the lifeless captain as he lies on the
deck. The following lines describe the successfulness of the mission as the captain has led his crew
to safety after accomplishing the goals which were set. This alteration in tone

Half of the person we become is an impression of the ones we admire. Growing up in the United
States every child has someone they look up to. This most likely is an individual that represents
success and the values we are taught to respect. Superheroes have always served as something good
in our lives because they make us want to help the world and feel like we can do anything.
Superheroes represent qualities that we should all attempt to embody. What Captain America truly
represents can be interpreted in many ways, but there are messages being conveyed. The authors of
"Captain America: The First Avengers" use rhetoric to express the social ideology that being a hero
is not exactly how strong you are, but what values ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author does well to show him as courageous, but helpless. In the opening scene he defends the
honor of the armed forces in the movie theater. This gets him into a fight and a beating from a much
larger man. He does not back down from the man but is overcome until his friend jumps in. Right
after this Steve is shown in his scrawny form trying to enlist where the folder displays how many
flaws he has. In boot camp he is again shown as subpar in stature and strength. It enables the
viewers to relate to feeling insignificant and unworthy, or just ordinary. Once he is broken down it
gives the chance for him to overcome everything. This aspect encourages the spectators that anyone
can become a hero. Pathos is used to elaborate on the values that Captain America represents. He
represents courage and sacrifice in the scene where he dives on top of the dead grenade to save the
squad and also when he haphazardly invades to rescue the POW. The best example of this is the last
scene of the movie where Steve flies the plane into the ice in order to save the city. He wanted more
than anything to continue his relationship with Peggy but gives that up for a better chance at saving
everyone. Everyone can relate to him when they say goodbye over the radio. This makes the viewers
relate to him and feel like they could be in the same position.
All of this emotional appeal also serves another purpose. It points to the fact the Steve is still human

Nautilus Research Paper
In 1866, the start of a remarkable experience is basic: storyteller Professor Aronnax and his two

nautical world. This alleged "beast" might possibly be a narwhal, an incredible and fanciful ocean
animal with a solitary horn like a unicorn. This creature is stealthy, calm, and unbelievably lethal.
The voyagers find that it is not a narwhal, but rather a much more unprecedented bit of innovation.

Jules Verne, otherwise called the father of sci–fi, was a wellspring of inspiration for innovators who
needed to look for accomplishment in submerged innovation. Verne presents the Nautilus, which is
an effective submarine that Captain Nemo imagined himself. Nemo plot the power and quality of his
imagined innovation, expressing "Yes, keen, nervy, and immune! It fears neither the unnerving
tempests of the Red Sea, nor its streams, nor its reefs" (Verne 212). This innovation caught
individuals' consideration. Amid this day and age in France, numerous neighborhood innovators
were additionally working out the complexities of building submarines. In 1863, a couple of years
before Verne composed his novel, Le Plongeur, a 140–foot submarine, was finished. This ship was

the fact that this submarine was not fruitful, hardware and submerged innovation kept on winding up

segregate himself from the air hose for a couple of minutes. Nemo's dominance of science and

Assessment Of An Organizational Leader
Assessment of an Organizational Leader It is not uncommon for individuals in a private corporation
or in a state public sector organization to associate leadership concepts with the top brass in today's
military. Individuals will make the assumption that if someone obtains a certain rank in the military
then that person must possess the skills and qualities of an all–encompassing leader who can
successfully lead the most complex of organizations. Such assumptions, however, do not consider
that the modern military does not work in this manner and leadership is much more complex. Since
2003, the Army has fired 129 of its top leaders while who were commanding either a battalion or a
brigade (Tan, 2015). The military is in fact limited and without external resources for leadership and
without exception operates in an environment that grooms and grows its leaders from the bottom up.
This limits the ability of all of the armed forces, including the United States Army, in allocating
good leaders when at the top tier of the organization. Basic Organizational Structure of Today's
Military Today's Army typically has a hierarchy of organizations that funnel tasks and information
from the highest levels of government to the individual Soldier on the ground. The different levels
within the hierarchy are headed by an officer. The hierarchy begins at the initial leadership level
with a platoon sized element that is often lead by a service member who is either a second or first

Comparison Of Comic Books And World War II
Comic Books and World War II During World War II, every major country participated, typically by
supplying troops, supplies, and weaponry to one side. However, throughout the duration of the
conflict, one country in particular fought against their foes with a different weapon. The country was
the United States of America. The weapon: comic books, yes, comic books. Now popular for their
big screen adaptations, comic books have been circulated since the Great Depression and they
played an influential role in World War II. Through the course of the war, comics were used as
propaganda, both to slander the enemy and bolster morale back home. In those days, comics had

Captain America Character Traits
Genuine compassion is a difficult trait to find today in a world so full of hatred and violence. One
hero of fiction that we could learn from to combat this negativity, and I especially have, is Captain
America (Steve Rogers) from the Marvel Comics Universe. He is more than just a character in my
favorite movies, he has taught me to be kind, loyal, and courageous and I believe our world could
use the same compassion that he displays. Captain America's loyalty is one of his most striking
traits. In the second film of the Captain America trilogy, he discovered that his best friend was the
villain he had been hunting the entire movie. Rogers did not turn his back on his friend, and even
refused to fight him periodically throughout the movie. Instead, Rogers helped rehabilitate his friend
back from the brain damage he suffered. In a similar fashion, I have learned to defend my friends
from others, and remain loyal to them. When arguments break out, I look to understand everyone's
side of the story and I never jump to conclusions. Every conflict has a solution and a source. Rogers
has shown me that staying with your friends, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

portion of this aspect of my personality to Rogers. He volunteered to crash a plane full of explosives

The Consequences Of Discipline In Children By Ray Bradbury
Jim Rohn once said, "Discipline is the foundation upon which all success is built. Lack of discipline
inevitably leads to failure" Ray Bradbury would agree with this notion as he addresses the
consequences of not disciplining your children. Ray Bradbury shows the conflict of Lydia and
George, wealthy parents who live in a futuristic society, of not spending enough time with their
spoiled and entitled children Wendy and Peter. The conflict between the parents and the children is
the harms of technology. The author uses motifs, conflicts, and allusions to suggest that a healthy
family unit is parents disciplining their children and spending time with them. Ray Bradbury uses
various motifs in the nursery to warn the audience of the impending fate of Lydia and George for not
disciplining their children. The nursery consisted of lions "so real, so feverishly and startlingly real
that you could feel the prickling fur on your hand" and the couple's screams after which "they
realized why those other screams had sounded so familiar." (Bradbury 3, 14). The description of the
lions provides the reader with a clear sense of how real the nursery looks; the couple's screams
foreshadow the downfall of the couple in the nursery. These items show how the parents allowed the
kids to become spoiled and attached to the nursery and gave the love for their parents to the nursery,
and we see this with the motifs. The nursery shows the relationship between the children and the
parents. The nursery

Research Paper On The Five People You Meet In Heaven
"The Five People You Meet in Heaven" The Five People You Meet in Heaven is an amazing book
that shows how every life is connected, and that every life matters. The Five People You Meet in
Heaven is a book about an older man named Eddie who is a maintenance worker for an amusement
park called Ruby Pier where he works all of his life and his dad before him. Ruby Pier was built
some seventy–five years ago and has changed immensely since it was built. The Five People You
Meet in Heaven describes heaven as meeting five people who impacted your life or you impacted
theirs and teach you a lesson. The first person Eddie meets is a man named Joseph Corvelzchik
better known as the Blue Man Eddie did not know the Blue Man very well but Eddie killed him
accidentally and Eddie had no idea he killed him. When Eddie was younger his brother and him
were playing catch and Joe, Eddie's brother, threw the ball over Eddie's and Eddie instinctively
turned to go get the ball and was almost hit by a car who swerved out of the way to avoid hitting
Eddie. The man driving the car was the Blue Man who swerved around Eddie and swerved around
another car eventually swerving down an alleyway and dying of a heart attack. The Blue Man is a
great example of how every life is connected in some way Eddie just a little boy killed the Blue
Man, Joseph, and had no idea he killed him until he himself died.

Compare and Contrast Influential authors like Thomas Paine, Walt Whitman, and Tim O'Brien each
write about what they think about war. Walt Whitman, Thomas Paine, and Tim O'Brien's attitude,
tone, and message have similar components but is also unique.
Thomas Paine gives off a strong attitude towards his enemy, setting the tone and sending a message.
In common sense, Paine expresses his disgust and anger towards the government of Great Britain.
"As a long and violent abuse of power, is generally the Means of calling the right of it in question..."
(Paine 2). Outraged by his own government, Paine's tone implies that the question of war must be
introduced. He does this in a way that sends a message for everyone to understand and be aware.
Thomas Paine has his very strong opinion about war, but Walt Whitman explains a different point of
view during the Civil War.
Walt Whitman was an influential icon during the Civil War, his poems express his attitude, tone and
message towards the war. In "Vigil Strange I kept on the Field One Night", Whitman's tone shows
his sadness for the soldiers of war. "Vigil final for you brave boy, ... Show more content on

Examples Of Character Changes In Remember The Titans
'Describe how a character changes in the film 'Remember the Titans' Explain why this change
occurs.'
In the film 'Remember the titans' which was directed by Boaz Yakin. I thought that Julius had
changed the most during the film and these changes occurred in these three points. One point is how
Julius was a very strong an opinionated person. The second point is Julius and Gerry finally
confronted each other about getting along and the last point is how coach Boone pushed Julius and
Gerry to share the captaincy roles to work hard together for the team to follow in example.
Julius was a very opinionated person, who was all about himself and not looking after his own team
or anyone else for that matter. For example when Julius was confronted by Gerry, during this
conversation Julius said 'I'm supposed to wear out myself for this team? What team? Nope that's not
what I'm going to do is I'm going to look after myself.' When this confrontation was happening there
were many close up camera shots, this was because the director wanted to show the emotion and
anger in the faces of Gerry and Julius. This shows that Julius is a very opinionated person and he
only cares about himself, this is shown in what he told Julius.

Jules Gabriel Verne's 'The Mysterious Island'
The Mysterious Island
The novel, The Mysterious Island, was written by legendary French 19th Century author, Jules
Gabriel Verne (1828 – 1905). Verne is widely considered to be the Father of science fiction
writings/novels, often unintentionally predicting future technologies such as submarines, missiles,
rocket ships, etc. He is also known for his many works, for example, Journey to the Center of the
Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days and, the subject of
this book report, The Mysterious Island. I chose this book, not only because it interested me, but
because I had started to read it a few years ago but never got the chance to finish it and it was
collecting dust and so I thought I should use this opportunity to read it. Some interesting facts about
the novel include that I managed to find are that in the original French version of the book, some of
the main characters are given slightly different names: Gédéon Spillet, Nabuchodonosor (Nab) and
Harbert Brown as opposed to Gideon Spilett, Neb and Herbert Brown. Furthermore, there some
date/time discrepancies, for example, the story takes place after the American Civil War (between
1861 and 1865) and Captain Nemo is seen to have died within this time period, while in the book,
Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, which takes place 1867 and 1868, Nemo is still alive.
Other things to note is that there have been about 11 different film and television adaptations made

The Depiction Of A Hero In Captain America
It's another beautiful day with people weaving in and out of buildings getting to their destination
following the status quo.The normal everyday routine when all of a sudden something goes south
extremely quickly.A villain appears and starts terrorizing the town, and it seems that no one can save
the citizens. Then bursting into action a Hero bursts onto the scene and saves the day, and ultimately
the hero ends up winning. The No matter who the hero may be all hero movies follow the same
theme. What really changes is the way that said hero is built up through the cinematography of the
movie. That is where the true differences can be made, but the depiction of one hero in particular
remains constant. That hero being Captain America. The first box office depiction of Captain
America took place in 1990 and evolved to what we know and have seen in Captain America the
Winter Soldier.

Dbq : Was Magellan Worth Defending?
DBQ: Was Magellan Worth Defending? 1519: a Spanish armada of five ships set sail that would
soon be the first to circumnavigate the globe. Their captain, a Portuguese noble, was an
accomplished student of cartography and astronomy. Europe's cravings for spices sent Columbus to
Asia, and into the barrier that was the Americas. Magellan's expedition sought to find a way
through, on a mission to bring a new trade route and immense wealth to Spain. Through the crew's
starvation, two mutinies against him, and his harsh personality and lack of accomplishment,
Magellan proved his life was not worth saving. The crew's starvation is the sign of Magellan's lack
of any empathy and bad captainship, which inevitably led to the crew's attempt of ... Show more

Moreover, Document D also puts forth that, "Besides the above–named evils, this misfortune I will
mention was the worst, it was that the upper and lower gums of most of our men grew [swelled] so
much that they could not, eat, and in this way so many suffered, that nineteen died." (Document D)
This further shows the unnecessary suffering that befell the crew. The crew had no sane motive to
save their captain's life, who oversaw their death. Magellan's ill–preparedness and overly–harsh
personality led to him starving the crew.
The not singular but twice repeated mutiny shows the bad captainship of Magellan. In agreement,
Document B describes that, "Many of the men–resentful of this cut and fearing that Magellan might
lead them to their death–began to demand that the fleet return to Spain. Magellan refused, and the
growing discontent eventually led to the mutiny..." (Document B) The act of mutiny shows extreme
discontent with a captain, and is reasonable in this case. If the captain is this troublesome, it is not
essential that he is saved. Accordingly, Document C submits to the notion that, "The trip through the
strait took 38 days, during which time one of the ships, the San Antonio, deserted the fleet and
returned to Spain." (Document C) This excerpt show further discontent with the captain. If the
captain's value is questioned more than once, a decision to label his unworthiness is clear.

Movie Review : Two Movies
Two movies base on comic books written in 1963 and 2008. The Avengers first written in 1963 then
made it to the theater in 2012, is a group of superheroes brought together to save the world. The
Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in 2008, later made into a movie in 2014 is a group of
scavengers and killers work together to save the galaxy. Both movies were action packed and filled
with humor and story. The character's interaction with each other, the humor, and animation were
written very well into the movie.
The Avengers is made up of six people and one leader that doesn't fight with them: Thor, Iron Man
aka Tony Stark, Captain America aka Steve Rogers, Hulk aka Bruce Banner, Black Widow aka
Natalia Romanova or Natasha Romanoff, Hawkeye aka Clint Barton, and Nick Fury. Nick Fury
works for a secret organization called S.H.I.E.L.D. that very few people know about including the
government. He makes the decisions with the restrictions made by the council of four government
officials that know about the agency. He pulls together these secret agents and superheroes to defend
against the villain Loki, who has the tesseract, a shining blue cube that can create a portal to the
other side of the universe. The council is against this decision, but it is urgent so they let him do it
anyways. Each character has their own style of doing things and personalities that makes it hard for
the team to work together at first. As the movie goes on they start to like each other more. After a

(A) Overall the book is well written, and has a lot of good information, but it

How Does Captain Nemo Show Honor
Captain Nemo: The Man Who Demonstrates Honor Perhaps one of the most superior personality
traits honor is sometimes overlooked. In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Brutus' honor lives
even when he doesn't. After Brutus dies at Marc Antony's feet, he reminds people Brutus' legacy was
the most honorable. "This was the noblest Roman of them all: All the conspirators, save only he
[Brutus]...and common good to all, made one of them." (act 5, scene 5, lines 74–78) Similarly, in the
novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo exhibits a compelling persona through his
arcane history and honorable personality. Much like the classic green thumb farmer, diesel breathing
gear heads, or friendly, salty surfers of the west coast, Captain Nemo is the archetypal nautical
equivalent of honorable characters seen in famous movies such as Quint from Jaws and Santiago in
The Old Man and The Sea. With rigidity and an unknown past, Captain Nemo expresses positive
characteristics that almost everyone can learn from. In the late 1800s sailors and explorers used sea
monsters and other myths as an answer for the unknown. However, quite contradictory to a
"Leviathan" or "enormous cetacean," (Verne, 23) Jules Verne brought a colossus of a submarine into
the novel. This is the first glimpse we get of Captain Nemo, the man behind the underwater vessel.
Sophistication has been and always will be something admired by society. Understanding Jules
Verne's futuristic style of writing, the audience as well as characters in the novel, for example Pierre
Arronax honor Nemo, "'Monsieur,' I said to Captain Nemo,'The honour of being the first to set foot
on this land [Antarctica] belongs to you,'" (Verne, 132). Having shortcomings to some magnitude,
all humans try to strive to be better. Captain Nemo shows this by taking Pierre as a world traveling
companion. Honor is related closely with admiration, because people respect others who overcome
low points in life. Captain Nemo has an arcane history granting him with experience and wisdom.
The objective lens Captain Nemo uses to evaluate every scenario is present throughout the novel. "I
am the law, I am the justice." (Verne, 197) This quote refers to when Captain Nemo sunk a ship that

Analysis of the First Female Superhero: Wonder Woman Essay
The first widely recognizable female superhero is Wonder Woman, from the All– American
Publications, which was one of the three companies that merged to form DC Comics. Wonder
Woman was presented in a way that was typical of most women in comics, although her Character
portrays a strong independent heroine; the comic series still nevertheless caters to the promiscuous
fantasies of young male readers. Wonder Woman is depicted in a hyper sexualized fashion and an
object of consumption for males. Recurring scenes of wonder women in skimpy outfits accentuating
her melon sized breasts and small waistline emphasize the idealized female body and how it was
used to draw the gazes of males in visual media. Wonder Woman serves as an example of many ...

The meat's raw! The Jell–O's hot! The coffee's cold"! Although the story ends up being just a bad
dream, it's a cruel depiction of gender roles in society. Wonder woman criticism by her husband for
her lack of cooking skills shows how pronounced gender roles are for women in society. Another
noteworthy example that depicts gender roles is in Wonder Woman No. 3, 1942. Cartoonist Marston
thought that sexual enslavement would be the path to a matriarchal society, in the actual quote from
a Wonder Woman thought balloon Marston sketches, "if girls want to be slaves there's no harm in
that. The bad thing for them is submitting to a master or to an evil mistress like Paula! A good
mistress could do wonders with them!" Marston without question has some of the all–time most
corrupt and over the top views on lifestyles and gender politics depicted in cartoons. Throughout
comic book series publication the recurring theme of female suppression is prevalent in the Wonder
Woman comic book series, there are several panels of wonder woman straining against the bindings
of society. The Golden Age (1930's –1940's) women were portrayed as damsels in distress, in almost
every comic book cover a lady is tied up with a man trying to save her. Facebook's group created a

Letters from the Samantha
An interesting short story is "Letters from The Samantha" by Mark Helpin. This story
tells the fascinating tale, in the form of never sent letters, of an ape brought aboard an iron–hulled

reader, through Samson Low, that the animal does not symbolize anything or mean anything, in fact,
"He stands for nothing" (280), several arguments can be made to contradict this. One
could argue that the ape symbolized the untamed and rarely used wild side of Samson Low through
a comparison of their personalities, appearances, and the way they are treated by others. Samson

He is listless " (280). For the first time the captain has headaches' on the same journey he has
taken aboard an ape. The heat my be partially to blame but the guilt he feels of not living his life as
he secretly wants to could also be a factor. The ape also imitates what Samson Low does. When
Samson offers his hand to the creature, "In imitation, he put out his arm, looking much less
fearsome." (277). The captain and the ape act as if they are communicating on a different,
more primitive level. At times, the crew's behavior is primitive as well. Their reactions change
throughout the story. At first they fear the ape as a wild creature until the captain "tames' him.
"The crew has divide into two factions–those who wish to have the monkey shot, and those
who would put him in his boat". (274). Because they do not understand him they wish to be
rid of him. The next stage is acceptance and approval. After the creature comes down from the
rigging and takes the captain's hand, "the crew cheered and laughed" (277). Now that
they no longer fear him, they enjoy his novelty as a kind of pet. They write home and describe the
ape with some pride; they are the ones who have this animal and have conquered him. The next step
is indifference. The crew ignored the ape where they had had such

Reflection Of Peter Pan
The book, "Peter Pan," is the most famous work of Scottish novelist and playwright, Sir James
Matthew Barrie. He first staged the story of Peter Pan in 1904 into the form of a play and
subsequently published a following novel in 1911. It is an endearing and alluring book about an
eccentric and fanciful little boy who wouldn't grow up. The story is set in a place called, the
"Neverland," where Captain Hook is Captain of the Jolly Roger, Tiger Lily is the Princess of the
Indians, Tinker Bell is a fairy, and magical creatures that lie deep within the exotic locale. The book
focuses on his adventures and escapades with Wendy and her younger brothers, John and Michael.
The novel begins with highlighting the reality that "all children except one, grow up" (Barrie 1).
The journey begins when Peter Pan sets foot into the Darling's nursery and accomplishes to
convince Wendy to fly to Neverland with her brothers to tell the lost boys stories. Tinker Bell

She is the eldest child and "was every inch a woman, though there were not very many inches" (25).
Though she hoped she would avoid growing up by going to Neverland but the exact opposite
happened. In the story, Peter manages to convince Wendy to go to Neverland, only if she could take
her younger brothers, John and Michael as well, to take on the role of a mother to the lost boys, to
tell them bedtime stories and such things a mother should do. When they ask her to be their mother,
she responds "ought I?... Of course it's frightfully fascinating, but you see I am only a little girl. I
have no real experience"(66). She takes on the role innately by having pretend meal times, tucking
them to bed, sewing them pockets, and telling them stories. Wendy's character is dynamic since at
first she wanted to avoid the responsibility of growing up but towards the end, she realizes and
decides she wants to grow

Harvey Captain Courageous Quotes

  • 1. Harvey Captain Courageous Quotes Passage 1: from Captains Courageous by Rudyard Kipling, adapted by Malvina G. Vogel Harvey is a rich, young boy who is used to having servants. He is traveling on a steamship in the late 1900s. When he gets sick and falls overboard, a local fishing crew rescues him and safely brings him aboard their boat. Disko Troop is the captain of this rescue boat. The boat is called We're Here, and Dan Troop, his son, tries to help Harvey out. 1 "I'm Dan Troop," said the boy, "and my father's captain of the We're Here. I'm the cook's helper and do everything the other men won't do," he added proudly. 2 When Harvey finished eating, Dan made him stretch in every direction to find if he had any injuries. Tom and Prince Edward look remarkably alike. When the two have the opportunity to meet, they begin to talk about changing places. 15 "Tell me more," the prince said eagerly. "What do you do with your friends?" 16 "We sometimes have stick fights and we run races. In the summer, we go wading in the canals. We have water battles in the river, splashing each other all over the place." 17 "How I would love that!" cried Edward. "If only I could do those things–just once! But go on." 18 "And at the river's edge, we bury each other in the sand and make pies with lovely, oozing mud. There's nothing like it for fun in the whole world." ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Summary Of Jules Verne 's ' France ' Noah Lewis Mrs. Cavolt LA III Honors XX November 2016 PLACEHOLDER TITLE Jules Verne, of France, was a prominent author who produced over 60 novels along with multiple plays and short stories. Verne was born in February of 1828, amidst the Industrial Revolution, in a port city called Nantes. An environment like this undoubtedly helped to spark Verne's near unquenchable desire for adventure and travel, a key component of his life until its end in 1905. However, Jules Verne experienced his share of bumps and potholes on his road to glory. Verne had moved to Paris to get a degree in law, but shortly after he ended up working in the arts even with pressure from his parents to continue his studies. With that door eventually closing Verne took up a job as a secretary and even a stockbroker to support himself and his family. Finally finding a stable position, Verne and his wife took roughly 20 trips to the British Isles, which ended up as a solid source for writing material. Verne's thirst for adventure reached the point where he bought his own boat, drawing on his travels all the way from British Isles to the Mediterranean to create more novels. The novels known as Journey to the Center of the Earth and From the Earth to the Moon were influenced by Verne's experiences and travels. Other titles such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty Days added to Verne's prestige. The pinnacle of his fame is tied to his main series of novels, the 54 belonging ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my ears the moans and screams Of the dying ring, Somewhere in the darkness The siren softly sings..." "The architects of our doom Around their tables sit, And in their thrones of power, Condemn those they've cast adrift. Echoes down the city street, Their Harpies laughter rings. Waiting for the curtain call, Oblivious in the wings." Excerpt from the lyrics, "The Wake of the Medusa", By The Pogues "The Raft of the Medusa", by Theodore Gericault, 1819, was inspired by the catastrophic wreck of the French frigate, The Medusa, on July 2, 1816, off the west coast of Africa, during a voyage to Senagal. Due to there only being six lifeboats aboard, the dignitaries, their families and other higher ranking officials took possession of them, leaving approximately 150 members for the raft. Seventeen crewmen decided, for whatever reason, to remain on The Medusa. Those in the lifeboats quickly decided that towing the raft was impractical, and Governor Schmaltz, not Captain De Chaumereys, was the first to drop the tow line to the raft, leaving it to the cruelty of the open sea. On the raft, the situation quickly deteriorated, and panic consumed those aboard. Fighting broke out, provisions were destroyed and the Raft of the Medusa's infamous voyage commenced. The first night 20 men were killed, or committed suicide, in a struggle to defeat terror, fear and dread. The undisciplined soldiers quickly staged a mutiny, eventually committed cannibalism and other atrocities, and 13 days later, 15 of the original 150 that went into the ocean survived to be

They wanted America to join the Allied Forces and go to war, but couldn't do much about the US policy of non–interference at the time. Hence, Captain America came into existence. Steven had been born on July 4, 1922 in the lower east side of Manhattan to poor Irish immigrant parents. He was an orphan by the time he was in his teens and, disturbed by the rise of the Nazi party, desperate to fight against them. His repeated attempts to enlist in the army, however, were rejected because he couldn't pass the physical. Steve's persistence, however, paid off when he was selected to be a test subject for a super–soldier project – where a special serum created by a Professor Reinstein would instantly and permanently turn him into a stronger and faster soldier codenamed Captain America. Every superhero needs an evil to fight, and for Joe Simon, that evil was Adolf Hitler. And in the very first issue of Captain America dated March 1941 – 9 months before America joined WWII – we see Steve punching the Nazi leader. This verse shows the propaganda angle in the Captain America Comics. Not just that, the costume shows Rogers wearing the stars and stripes not just as his uniform, but also on his shield, which he uses not just for defense, but also as an effective weapon. • 10. Childhood Is Seen As A Horror Experience Childhood is often seen as a carefree time where children are able to grow and learn from the world around them. Many people have fond memories of their time as a child and would do anything to get it back. However, in Barrie's Peter Pan, childhood is seen as a horror experience. This novel is read in stark contrast to Walt Disney's popular movie version of Peter Pan. Disney's version shows three children on the adventure of their life. But, Barrie's Peter Pan is the exemplar of the childhood horror experience because of the actions of the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling, the actions of the character Captain James Hook, and the dangers inherent of being a child in this anarchistic place called Neverland. With a name like "Darling" one may assume that the holder of that name would be an inherently good person. However, this is not the case with the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Darling in Barrie's Peter Pan. The behavior of these two characters toward their own children allows the true childhood horror experience to be shown. For example, when Wendy Darling was born, Mr. Darling's first action as a father was to calculate whether or not he and his wife could afford to keep their infant daughter. With his wife still in bed, Mr. Darling ". . . sat on the edge of Mrs. Darling's bed, holding her hand and calculating expenses, while she looked at him imploringly" (Barrie 8). This action from Mr. Darling expressed the horrible truth that he valued any wealth that he and his wife ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. The Shipm An Older Man Who Walked With The Most Subtle Essay The Shipman was an older man who walked with the most subtle of limps in his step. His eyes twinkled when spoke of the sea and of his family. When he laughed, his whole body shook. He was a friendly sort and spoke easily with most of the company, only seeming to become quiet around those he considered vile, such as the Doctor or any that spoke wrongly of a woman or Ethiopian. Some of the company teased him about his quick fingers and how he used them to take wine from the captain's quarters, and he simply glowed with pride. When it was his turn to tell a tale, the company gathered around eagerly. Each was certain that someone so experienced would know a few great ones. However, an unusual bashfulness came over the man, as if he forgot he would have to tell a tale at all. After a few playful jibes, though, he began to speak. The Shipman's Tale Many years ago, in a village that was not too different from any other, there lived a poor son of blacksmith named Fendrel who dreamt of being a knight. The other villagers looked down upon the lad for his aspirations, citing his father's occupation and his mother's birthplace as their reasons, yet he paid little attention to their scoffing. He trained, night and day, until he was the best horserider and fighter the village had to boast about. Of course, the better he became, the more word of his skill spread throughout the kingdom. Eventually, rumor of a lad already more capable than all of the kingsman reached the ear of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Discipline Is Vital To Parenting In Ray Bradbury's The Veldt Discipline is Vital to Parenting In today's society, parents that do not discipline their children are perceived as nonchalant, or carefree. Ray Bradbury, an acclaimed writer, disagrees with this concept. Instead, Bradbury would say that discipline is a vital component of parenting, and without it, children will commit awful acts. With the use of foreshadowing and allusion in his short story, "The Veldt", Bradbury depicts that a lack of discipline leads to horrendous, potentially deadly consequences. Bradbury foreshadows the parents' fatal deaths to develop the repercussions they face for not disciplining Wendy and Peter. For instance, after the Hadleys have dinner, the parents head to the nursery and find George's old wallet with "drops of saliva" and "blood smears on both sides" (Bradbury 8). The disturbing state George and Lydia find the wallet in hints that something is wrong with the nursery and that the virtual animals can affect real life objects. Bradbury also adds the following dialogue between the parents: "'Those screams–they sound familiar.' 'Do they?' 'Yes, awfully'" (9). The two screams Mr. and Mrs. Hadley heard were strikingly familiar because they were their own screams, hinting that the children wanted them dead and that the lions in the nursery were going to kill them. Throughout "The Veldt", the parents hardly discipline their children, or care for them, causing the children to despise them and develop a rotten character. Had the parents properly ruled ... • 20. Analysis Of John Locke 's ' The Cold Soldier And Douglas... John Locke argues in An Essay Concerning Human Understanding, that personal identity is contingent upon the memories that people form. In essence, the ever–changing body is not a factor into defining who a person is. The consciousness of a subject puts memory into motion and thus, creating his or her identity. The main ideas behind Locke's theory are still discussed today. However, fictional characters in movies prove that it they are inadequate. Prominent examples include: Neo in The Matrix, Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Douglas Quail in "We Will Remember It for You Whole Sale." These characters set a precedence that confirms the invalidity of Locke's theory as their identities are not based their continuous ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the extensive abilities Neo acquired in the Matrix, most notably the ability to dodge bullets, proves that he lives, thinks, and occupies his body in the Matrix. This evidence suggests that the body more than just a framework for memories. It also makes his experiences tangible, by providing a gateway to perceive the world around him. Neo has a more intimate connection to his body than Locke's theory articulates, and precluding it causes detriment to his personal identity. Neo's experience with his new body in the Matrix is immense. As he syncs into his new body, he immediately grasps the sense of how it operates when Cypher uploads presets of knowledge into brain. He is unsurprised by his body's instant mastery of martial arts and rashly challenges Morpheus in a sparring match. Any blind jump into a recently learned task would prove disorientating and frustrating. However, this is not the case, as Neo effortlessly displays adept fighting skills and eventually defeats Morpheus. Additionally, he requires no training wheels to adjust to any other task he performs within the Matrix. This challenges the legitimacy of Locke's theory as Neo's subjective consciousness interprets a new method of how to direct himself in the Matrix. In the final scene, Trinity's love resurrects Neo, signifying that the body plays an integral part in constructing personal identity. Trinity's love, along with the ... As I start up the engine of my small plane that I had bought after getting my license I started my 2,000 mile journey across the Atlantic ocean. I take off from Jackson Mississippi airport and in an instant in 10,000 feet above sea level. I turn on auto pilot and take a nap. I jolt up to a loud siren and a red flashing red light. The aircraft that I was in is heading for an island that was not marked on my radar. The smoke from the engine is puffed up in my face and my wing is on fire, how this happened, I don't know. There was never a sign of the engine overheating and not a single bird in the air. As I was free falling in my plane I had to think fast, so I jumped out of the plane and parachuted on to the beach. My broken down plane flew over my head with a tale of smoke and barrel rolled into the dark forest of this new founded island. I start a journey to the crash site to try to recover as much as I could. That was when I saw him, the Gragle. The Gragle was said to be an alien that had come from another galaxy far far away. He has enormous hands that are none like a human's and a stench that could be smelt from a mile away. He had eight deep purple eyes that stared into your soul and legend was told that he has taken lives of many, but none have reported a sighting of him. I never believed in him, but many others did. • 30. The Open Boat By Stephen Crane The Open Boat Analysis The Open Boat is a wildly creative text. The author explores fiction and philosophy to achieve a balance of literature professionalism. The text is a masterpiece reality expressed through the creation of characters representatives of society and day to day living. Symbolic use of characters and human titles plays a key role in delivering the message of the author. Stephen Crane, the author exploits the power of harmony to establish a relationship where every individual is a unit within a literally functional setting. The author speaks about significant issues in society; more so, about the events that have affected his life. According to Alison and Mays (247), the characters in "The Open Boat" are vehicles designed to convey concepts about the society's functionality. They facilitate thematic and plot development to reveal the place of man in society and express nature as being apathetic to man. These ideological concepts are achieved by understanding the elements of society as being mutually dependent. The Correspondent, The Captain, Billie, and The Cook come up as the vital parts of the author`s chosen setting. This crew of sailors is motivated by the desire to survive but lacks adequate knowledge of the geography of the sea; they get through by ensuring that every individual is keen to do their part in the stressful environment. • 32. Theme And Meaning Of Peter Pan Theme and Meaning Peter Pan is a timeless tale in which transcends time and culture through its' underlying themes. Each of the characters fulfilled their roles tremendously, and was able to bring forth these themes in their own unique ways. The most apparent, from the beginning, is the emphasis of youthfulness. Peter is the main embodiment of this theme, given he does not physically age. From the beginning, his role was that to entice Wendy and her siblings to journey with him to Never–never land. What this magical place represents is a state of remaining youthful forever, and not letting society conform one's beliefs. The concept of age is masked by Peter's stubbornness to not conform to such. For example, Wendy wants to get married and have kids one day; Peter does not. Wendy wants this because she is taught from a young age that this is a common normality of life. Peter refusing to stay at the house with the other lost boys, in the end, showed that such normality does not have to be one's choice. This theme was conveyed by the play being both a comedy and a musical. These two forms of drama brought with it both wittiness and purity, both of which are a direct correlation youthfulness. And the character's ability to sing with clarity helped boost such a message. The role such clarity played is relevant to American culture, today. In order for people to listen, in a society with so much information, a message must be clear and transparent. Although it is not necessary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. The Alegorical Nature of O Captain! My Captain! by Walt... Explication of "O Captain! My Captain!" "O Captain! My Captain!" is one of the most popular poems ever written by Walt Whitman. Upon the initial reading of this poem, one may perceive the poem to be about a loyal captain who leads his crew on a treacherous, but successful, voyage which ends in devastation. If interpreted literally this is the poem's only meaning, but for those who look further there is an underlying story behind the words of Whitman. Whitman uses multiple literary elements throughout this poem in order to unmask the story of Abraham Lincoln's journey and ultimate death as a result of the Civil War and his fight to end slavery. The title of the poem, "O Captain! My Captain!" , insinuates that the poem will be centered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The speaker states, "Rise up – for you the flag is flung– for you the bugle trills" (line 10). This is interpreted as the ending of the war due to the patriotic symbolism of the flag which stands for freedom and also victory. Within this stanza, the importance of the captain is now extended from just the speaker to all those who await the ship's arrival. This is demonstrated as the speaker states, "For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning" (lines 11–12). The joyful tone of the stanza ceases towards the end as an unexpected downfall of emotions begins. Whitman uses repetition in lines 15 and 16 when he states "It is some dream that on the deck, / You've fallen cold and dead" (lines 15–16). This serves as a disturbing reminder that the figure which was most significant to the entire situation is no longer alive. The depressing realization of the captain's death is evident and seen most within the last stanza as the tone changes from that of triumph and elation to heartbreak and grief. This is shown through Whitman's use of imagery as the speaker states, "My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still, / My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will" (lines 17–18). This provides a detailed description of the lifeless captain as he lies on the deck. The following lines describe the successfulness of the mission as the captain has led his crew to safety after accomplishing the goals which were set. This alteration in tone ... • 44. Assessment Of An Organizational Leader Assessment of an Organizational Leader It is not uncommon for individuals in a private corporation or in a state public sector organization to associate leadership concepts with the top brass in today's military. Individuals will make the assumption that if someone obtains a certain rank in the military then that person must possess the skills and qualities of an all–encompassing leader who can successfully lead the most complex of organizations. Such assumptions, however, do not consider that the modern military does not work in this manner and leadership is much more complex. One hero of fiction that we could learn from to combat this negativity, and I especially have, is Captain America (Steve Rogers) from the Marvel Comics Universe. He is more than just a character in my favorite movies, he has taught me to be kind, loyal, and courageous and I believe our world could use the same compassion that he displays. • 50. The Consequences Of Discipline In Children By Ray Bradbury Jim Rohn once said, "Discipline is the foundation upon which all success is built. Lack of discipline inevitably leads to failure" Ray Bradbury would agree with this notion as he addresses the consequences of not disciplining your children. Ray Bradbury shows the conflict of Lydia and George, wealthy parents who live in a futuristic society, of not spending enough time with their spoiled and entitled children Wendy and Peter. The conflict between the parents and the children is the harms of technology. The author uses motifs, conflicts, and allusions to suggest that a healthy family unit is parents disciplining their children and spending time with them. Ray Bradbury uses various motifs in the nursery to warn the audience of the impending fate of Lydia and George for not disciplining their children. The nursery consisted of lions "so real, so feverishly and startlingly real that you could feel the prickling fur on your hand" and the couple's screams after which "they realized why those other screams had sounded so familiar." (Bradbury 3, 14). The description of the lions provides the reader with a clear sense of how real the nursery looks; the couple's screams foreshadow the downfall of the couple in the nursery. In the film 'Remember the titans' which was directed by Boaz Yakin. I thought that Julius had changed the most during the film and these changes occurred in these three points. One point is how Julius was a very strong an opinionated person. The second point is Julius and Gerry finally confronted each other about getting along and the last point is how coach Boone pushed Julius and Gerry to share the captaincy roles to work hard together for the team to follow in example. Julius was a very opinionated person, who was all about himself and not looking after his own team or anyone else for that matter. For example when Julius was confronted by Gerry, during this conversation Julius said 'I'm supposed to wear out myself for this team? What team? Nope that's not what I'm going to do is I'm going to look after myself.' When this confrontation was happening there were many close up camera shots, this was because the director wanted to show the emotion and anger in the faces of Gerry and Julius. This shows that Julius is a very opinionated person and he only cares about himself, this is shown in what he told Julius. Julius and Gerry confronted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Verne is widely considered to be the Father of science fiction writings/novels, often unintentionally predicting future technologies such as submarines, missiles, rocket ships, etc. He is also known for his many works, for example, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Around the World in 80 Days and, the subject of this book report, The Mysterious Island. I chose this book, not only because it interested me, but because I had started to read it a few years ago but never got the chance to finish it and it was collecting dust and so I thought I should use this opportunity to read it. Some interesting facts about the novel include that I managed to find are that in the original French version of the book, some of the main characters are given slightly different names: Gédéon Spillet, Nabuchodonosor (Nab) and Harbert Brown as opposed to Gideon Spilett, Neb and Herbert Brown. Furthermore, there some date/time discrepancies, for example, the story takes place after the American Civil War (between 1861 and 1865) and Captain Nemo is seen to have died within this time period, while in the book, Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, which takes place 1867 and 1868, Nemo is still alive. The Depiction Of A Hero In Captain America It's another beautiful day with people weaving in and out of buildings getting to their destination following the status quo.The normal everyday routine when all of a sudden something goes south extremely quickly.A villain appears and starts terrorizing the town, and it seems that no one can save the citizens. Then bursting into action a Hero bursts onto the scene and saves the day, and ultimately the hero ends up winning. The No matter who the hero may be all hero movies follow the same theme. What really changes is the way that said hero is built up through the cinematography of the movie. That is where the true differences can be made, but the depiction of one hero in particular remains constant. That hero being Captain America. The first box office depiction of Captain America took place in 1990 and evolved to what we know and have seen in Captain America the Winter Soldier. Their captain, a Portuguese noble, was an accomplished student of cartography and astronomy. Europe's cravings for spices sent Columbus to Asia, and into the barrier that was the Americas. Magellan's expedition sought to find a way through, on a mission to bring a new trade route and immense wealth to Spain. Through the crew's starvation, two mutinies against him, and his harsh personality and lack of accomplishment, Magellan proved his life was not worth saving. The crew's starvation is the sign of Magellan's lack of any empathy and bad captainship, which inevitably led to the crew's attempt of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, Document D also puts forth that, "Besides the above–named evils, this misfortune I will mention was the worst, it was that the upper and lower gums of most of our men grew [swelled] so much that they could not, eat, and in this way so many suffered, that nineteen died." (Document D) This further shows the unnecessary suffering that befell the crew. The crew had no sane motive to save their captain's life, who oversaw their death. Magellan's ill–preparedness and overly–harsh personality led to him starving the crew. The not singular but twice repeated mutiny shows the bad captainship of Magellan. In agreement, Document B describes that, "Many of the men–resentful of this cut and fearing that Magellan might lead them to their death–began to demand that the fleet return to Spain. Magellan refused, and the growing discontent eventually led to the mutiny..." (Document B) The act of mutiny shows extreme discontent with a captain, and is reasonable in this case. If the captain is this troublesome, it is not essential that he is saved. Accordingly, Document C submits to the notion that, "The trip through the strait took 38 days, during which time one of the ships, the San Antonio, deserted the fleet and returned to Spain." (Document C) This excerpt show further discontent with the captain. If the captain's value is questioned more than once, a decision to label his unworthiness is clear. Furthermore, Document A ... The Avengers first written in 1963 then made it to the theater in 2012, is a group of superheroes brought together to save the world. The Guardians of the Galaxy first appeared in 2008, later made into a movie in 2014 is a group of scavengers and killers work together to save the galaxy. Both movies were action packed and filled with humor and story. The character's interaction with each other, the humor, and animation were written very well into the movie. The Avengers is made up of six people and one leader that doesn't fight with them: Thor, Iron Man aka Tony Stark, Captain America aka Steve Rogers, Hulk aka Bruce Banner, Black Widow aka Natalia Romanova or Natasha Romanoff, Hawkeye aka Clint Barton, and Nick Fury. Nick Fury works for a secret organization called S.H.I.E.L.D. that very few people know about including the government. He makes the decisions with the restrictions made by the council of four government officials that know about the agency. He pulls together these secret agents and superheroes to defend against the villain Loki, who has the tesseract, a shining blue cube that can create a portal to the other side of the universe. The council is against this decision, but it is urgent so they let him do it anyways. Each character has their own style of doing things and personalities that makes it hard for the team to work together at first. As the movie goes on they start to like each other more. After a ... He is a part of a family comic that showcases the struggles, entertainment, and life of a high school teenager. Many readers can assume, that this character could probably cause some scandal with families. Those families feeling as though letting their young ones read and be exposed to such material could corrupt the minds of their children. What is interesting is Kevin Keller is a wonderful portrayal of all the positiveness in a queer guy. Alas, it falls short of this goal and does not provide much of either. • 73. How Does Captain Nemo Show Honor Captain Nemo: The Man Who Demonstrates Honor Perhaps one of the most superior personality traits honor is sometimes overlooked. In Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare, Brutus' honor lives even when he doesn't. After Brutus dies at Marc Antony's feet, he reminds people Brutus' legacy was the most honorable. "This was the noblest Roman of them all: All the conspirators, save only he [Brutus]...and common good to all, made one of them." (act 5, scene 5, lines 74–78) Similarly, in the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo exhibits a compelling persona through his arcane history and honorable personality. Much like the classic green thumb farmer, diesel breathing gear heads, or friendly, salty surfers of the west coast, Captain Nemo is the archetypal nautical equivalent of honorable characters seen in famous movies such as Quint from Jaws and Santiago in The Old Man and The Sea. With rigidity and an unknown past, Captain Nemo expresses positive characteristics that almost everyone can learn from. In the late 1800s sailors and explorers used sea monsters and other myths as an answer for the unknown. However, quite contradictory to a "Leviathan" or "enormous cetacean," (Verne, 23) Jules Verne brought a colossus of a submarine into the novel. This is the first glimpse we get of Captain Nemo, the man behind the underwater vessel. Sophistication has been and always will be something admired by society. Understanding Jules Verne's futuristic style of writing, the audience as well as characters in the novel, for example Pierre Arronax honor Nemo, "'Monsieur,' I said to Captain Nemo,'The honour of being the first to set foot on this land [Antarctica] belongs to you,'" (Verne, 132). Having shortcomings to some magnitude, all humans try to strive to be better. Captain Nemo shows this by taking Pierre as a world traveling companion. Honor is related closely with admiration, because people respect others who overcome low points in life. Captain Nemo has an arcane history granting him with experience and wisdom. The objective lens Captain Nemo uses to evaluate every scenario is present throughout the novel. "I am the law, I am the justice." (Verne, 197) This quote refers to when Captain Nemo sunk a ship that had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis of the First Female Superhero: Wonder Woman Essay The first widely recognizable female superhero is Wonder Woman, from the All– American Publications, which was one of the three companies that merged to form DC Comics. Wonder Woman was presented in a way that was typical of most women in comics, although her Character portrays a strong independent heroine; the comic series still nevertheless caters to the promiscuous fantasies of young male readers. Wonder Woman is depicted in a hyper sexualized fashion and an object of consumption for males. Recurring scenes of wonder women in skimpy outfits accentuating her melon sized breasts and small waistline emphasize the idealized female body and how it was used to draw the gazes of males in visual media. Wonder Woman serves as an example of many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The meat's raw! The Jell–O's hot! The coffee's cold"! Although the story ends up being just a bad dream, it's a cruel depiction of gender roles in society. Wonder woman criticism by her husband for her lack of cooking skills shows how pronounced gender roles are for women in society. Another noteworthy example that depicts gender roles is in Wonder Woman No. 3, 1942. Cartoonist Marston thought that sexual enslavement would be the path to a matriarchal society, in the actual quote from a Wonder Woman thought balloon Marston sketches, "if girls want to be slaves there's no harm in that. The bad thing for them is submitting to a master or to an evil mistress like Paula! A good mistress could do wonders with them!" Marston without question has some of the all–time most corrupt and over the top views on lifestyles and gender politics depicted in cartoons. Throughout comic book series publication the recurring theme of female suppression is prevalent in the Wonder Woman comic book series, there are several panels of wonder woman straining against the bindings of society. The Golden Age (1930's –1940's) women were portrayed as damsels in distress, in almost every comic book cover a lady is tied up with a man trying to save her. Facebook's group created a page which focuses on the portrayal of women in comics, the site summarizes women in the Golden Age as career–oriented girls. Comic book characters as Nellie the ... • 77. Letters from the Samantha An interesting short story is "Letters from The Samantha" by Mark Helpin. This story tells the fascinating tale, in the form of never sent letters, of an ape brought aboard an iron–hulled sailing ship in 1909 by Samson Low, the ship's captain. Although the author makes a point to tell the reader, through Samson Low, that the animal does not symbolize anything or mean anything, in fact, "He stands for nothing" (280), several arguments can be made to contradict this. One could argue that the ape symbolized the untamed and rarely used wild side of Samson Low through a comparison of their personalities, appearances, and the way they are treated by others. Samson Low was a captain of a ship owned by the Green Star Line. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is listless " (280). For the first time the captain has headaches' on the same journey he has taken aboard an ape. The heat my be partially to blame but the guilt he feels of not living his life as he secretly wants to could also be a factor. The ape also imitates what Samson Low does. When Samson offers his hand to the creature, "In imitation, he put out his arm, looking much less fearsome." (277). The captain and the ape act as if they are communicating on a different, more primitive level. At times, the crew's behavior is primitive as well. Their reactions change throughout the story. At first they fear the ape as a wild creature until the captain "tames' him. "The crew has divide into two factions–those who wish to have the monkey shot, and those who would put him in his boat". (274). Because they do not understand him they wish to be rid of him. The next stage is acceptance and approval. After the creature comes down from the rigging and takes the captain's hand, "the crew cheered and laughed" (277). Now that they no longer fear him, they enjoy his novelty as a kind of pet. They write home and describe the ape with some pride; they are the ones who have this animal and have conquered him. The next step is indifference. He first staged the story of Peter Pan in 1904 into the form of a play and subsequently published a following novel in 1911. It is an endearing and alluring book about an eccentric and fanciful little boy who wouldn't grow up. The story is set in a place called, the "Neverland," where Captain Hook is Captain of the Jolly Roger, Tiger Lily is the Princess of the Indians, Tinker Bell is a fairy, and magical creatures that lie deep within the exotic locale. The book focuses on his adventures and escapades with Wendy and her younger brothers, John and Michael. The novel begins with highlighting the reality that "all children except one, grow up" (Barrie 1).
