Shutter Island Journal
Ryley Emslander Due date: Thursday, Jan. 14 Journal 5 I am reading Shutter Island by Dennis
Lehane, I am on page 369, and I finished the book. The remaining half of my book is about Teddy
and Chuck on a journey to find Andrew Laeddis, the killer of Teddy's wife, and they check Ward C
on the island and the lighthouse and there is no sign of him. Teddy and Chuck get past some
obstacles in their journey to the lighthouse, Chuck gets lost, and Teddy tries to escape the island on
the ferry. In the end, Teddy encounters Mr. Cawley in the lighthouse; it is revealed that Teddy has
been on the Island for two years and Teddy's real name is Andrew Laeddis. It is also revealed that
Chuck has been Dr. Sheehan the whole time and Teddy is actually Rachel Laeddis's husband. In this
journal, I will be characterizing Teddy in the second half of the book and questioning why Dr.
Sheehan would pretend to be Teddy's partner, Chuck, the entire time. G– As I am reading, I will be

How Does Terry Malloy Change In On The Waterfront
On the Waterfront is set on the docks, a very dismal place. The black and white photography make
the streets, alleyways and small, cramped apartments seem dark and bleak. While the union bosses
live well, the workers seem trapped by their situation, with no way to get out. Terry Malloy is a low
level worker for the union boss, who is not really aware that he is a part of the corruption. He is
asked to lure Joey Doyle to the roof of his apartment building, and believes that the union men just
want to "lean on him a little bit" (On the Waterfront) about testifying before the waterfront crime
commission. When he learns that he actually lured Joey to his death, he is upset by the fact that he
betrayed his friend, and acts very defensively when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, for most of the characters, choosing to do what is right can be difficult. Opposing the
union bosses can be dangerous, as evidenced by the deaths of Andy, Joey and Kayo. Therefore,
many of the dock workers prefer to do nothing and remain alive. Other characters, such as Father
Barry and Edie, have a strong internal moral code, and personal considerations do not impact their
decision to do what is right. However, in the case of Terry, his background and current affiliations
present a number of obstacles which prevent him from freely listening to what his conscience is
telling him to do. Terry is "owned" by Johnny Friendly, and cannot protest against the jobs that are
given to him. This ownership goes back to the days when Terry was a prize fighter, and was made to
take a fall when Friendly bet against him. Charley, Terry's older brother, is a key member of
Friendly's group, and was the one who told Terry he had to take the fall. When Friendly learns that
Terry has been subpoenaed to appear before the crime commission, he sends Charley to persuade
Terry to stop seeing Edie, and take a high paying job with the union. Terry refuses and Charley pays
the price with his life. When Terry goes looking for Friendly to get revenge, Father Barry tells him:
"don't fight him like a

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Comparison
One Flew Over Shutter Island When I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Forman, 1975), I
was reminded of a movie I had watched a couple years earlier. The movie Shutter Island (Scorsese,
2010) resembles One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (referred to as Cuckoo's Nest after this) in many
surprising ways. For starters, both of these films are filmed almost entirely in mental institutions.
Cuckoo's Nest follows the story of a man named R.P. McMurphy when he's placed into a mental
institution after pretending to be mentally ill. Shutter Island, however, is about a U.S. Marshall
named Teddy Daniels who is investigating the disappearance of an escaped, criminally insane
patient at an institution located on an isolated island. At the beginning of Shutter Island, Daniels and
his partner Chuck Aule are seen heading to an island in a ferry. Daniels is obviously seasick and
Chuck checks on him to make sure he's okay. The ferry they're on can be seen rocking side–to–side,
which seems to be giving the audience the idea that just as the ferry is unstable, so are Daniels and
his partner. This instability unravels as the plot progresses, with Daniels finally making the
realization that he's a delusional patient himself at the end of the movie. The music at the beginning

John Cawley. Nurse Ratched is an oppressor to the patients. She also seems to represent the
institution's hold over their lives. She's seen as a babysitter or caregiver to the patients and she
always keeps track of them as if they're children. Likewise, Dr. John Cawley often restricts Daniels
from doing what he needs to do for his investigation. He appears in many unexpected places, such
as in the lighthouse at the end of the movie, keeping watch over Daniels. Dr. John Cawley brings
Daniels closer and closer to discovering the truth about himself throughout the

Core Assessment Paper–Abnormal Psychology –PS 401

Abstract
Shutter Island is a film depicting several of the many facets of Abnormal Psychology as defined and
studied over the course of this term. Several of the concepts discussed in our lectures and
demonstrated during our classroom time were evident and vividly depicted in the film including
personality disorders past and present; stress and anxiety disorders; psychosis, and mood disorders.
There were others subtly displayed in the film however, these listed were of primary focus and
coincidence most closely with our study this term. While focusing more on the abnormal, Shutter

So, if parents or guardians are spending less time with children, who or what is teaching them right
from wrong?
Like previous generations today's youth are greatly influenced by what they see and hear. Outside of
parents or legal guardians, the big screen, television, music, and peers have the greatest influence
over young people today. What is being communicated to our youth falls short on doses of old–
fashioned morals and values.
Analysis on Family Morals in the 21st Century
Now, here is where things get a little complicated. Because as "free moral agents" we each have a
right to decide what has value or merit in our lives and our environment could very well determine
how our value system is formed. Boston University professor and social scientist Glenn Loury raises
some critical issues in his essay "Values and Judgments: Creating Social Incentives for Good
Behavior." He claims there are underlying factors that lie at the root of behavior. This is particularly
true when we examine dysfunctional behavior.
Dysfunctional behavior is thought to be more prevalent in impoverished communities. Some debate
that a common dysfunctional correlation exists among individuals whether they live in poor, middle,
or upper class communities. It appears dysfunctional behavior is not limited to one particular
segment of our population. If the ground is fertile

ther research is needed. Character Information Andrew Laeddis from the film Shutter Island
(Medavov, Messer, Fischer, & Scorsese, 2010) is a roughly 30–year–old Caucasian American male
living in Boston. Although his education and family history is unknown, it is known that he was a
former US Marshal and also a highly decorated army veteran from World War 2 (WW2). His marital
status is a widower, as he murdered his wife Dolores, after which he was administered to Ashecliffe
hospital for the criminally insane. Psychosocial History After serving as a soldier in WW2, Laeddis
worked as a US Marshal in Boston. During this time he had three children with his wife, however as
she became manic–depressive and suicidal, Laeddis began drinking. One night ... Show more

As illustrated earlier, when identified as Daniels, he shows no recollection of his past trauma.
Further, although he has dreams and flashbacks of his time in WW2, they are limited only to his
experience of the Dachau concentration camp. This memory itself is always distorted with images of
his own children as prisoners and victims of the camp, and further he remembers killing guards
(which is unlikely to have happened). In terms of personal information, when identifying as Daniels,
he refuses to believe that he ever had three children or that he was ever administered to Ashecliffe.
There are also many gaps in his recall of everyday events, for example he does not recall being
given any medication and he cannot recognise his own psychiatrist. He also holds no recollection of
any of his attacks on orderlies, guards and other patients. When informed he had attacked and
almost killed another patient two weeks earlier, because he had been called Laeddis rather than
Daniels, he shows no recollection and denies the event ever happened. Further, he does not have any
recollection of when he switches between the two identities. Unfortunately, information about
Laeddis' upbringing is lacking, meaning further research into his familial history is needed to fully
understand the extent of his

Psychological Analysis Of Shutter Island
The movie Shutter Island presents wrenching twists and turns from a psychological state of mind.
The author of the story, Lehane, makes it certain that the psychic mind of the main character helps to
enhance the plot of the story. The darkness of the story is based off of the year nineteen fifty–four to
drive the setting of the story. Throughout the film, clues are given that eventually give way to the
realization of reality. When the story begins in medias res, it helps engage the audience and
jumpstart theories. Manipulation is a present factor used throughout the story with both the audience
and the characters to create a thrilling story.
Lehane (the author) uses Teddy's psychic state to create both tension and uncertainty to drive the
plot of the story. The character is used as a mechanism to misguide the audience. In the movie,
Teddy is first portrayed as a well–driven and intelligent man who seems to be on edge very often.
From the beginning of the story, the circumstances seem to be eery as they directly lead up to the
grande finale. The author uses Teddy to manipulate the audience into believing one theory while in
Shutter Island, the psychiatric doctor uses "fake beings" to manipulate Andrew Laeddis. The psychic
state of the main character helps in guiding the audience through the uncertainty of the plot. The
viewers are told a story that drives the plot into becoming a plot twist. Suspense and uncertainty
react hand in hand to guide the story and make it more

Shutter Island : The Film Big Twist
After watching Martin Scorseses much misunderstood Shutter Island for a second time I have
decided to evaluate both the stories meandering plot and its profound themes. Shutter Island is truly
a tragedy of how one man cannot accept his reality. This film involves a character played by
Dicaprio, filled with guilt of the death of his wife and losing his grasp on what is real and what's not.
In Shutter Island we are led to believe that Leonardo Dicaprio is playing a U.S Marshall under the
name of Teddy Daniels. Daniels along with his new partner Chuck (played by Mark Ruffalo) has
been led to Shutter Island to investigate the mysterious vanishing of Rachel Solando. The films big
twist is that Teddy is in fact a patient of the mental facility who murdered his wife after she drowned
their three children in the lake. The main character conflict of Shutter Island is the story of one man
and his denial to accept reality. Throughout the film Teddy is plagued by dreams and visions of his
dead wife, as well as disturbing flashbacks to his involvement in the Second World War. This is a
man who has seen terrible things and is trying to bury them away by pretending to be somebody
else. Shutter Island is a film that becomes deeper on repeat viewings and seeing it a second time a
lot of the delicacies of the performances and more low key signs become much more clear and
meaningful. Also on a second viewing two other conflicts develop, conflicts that are more to do with
the films historical

Essay on Shutter Island
Directed by Martin Scorsese, Shutter Island is an American mind bending thriller film based on
Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel also named Shutter Island. Leonardo DiCaprio takes the lead role as a
U.S Marshall named Teddy Daniels, who along with his partner, Chuck Aule (played by Mark
Ruffalo), are investigating the mysterious disappearance of a patient at a highly guarded and isolated
psychiatric penitentiary located on Shutter Island. Teddy Daniels runs about the island trying to
uncover the mysteries of the Shutter Island psychiatric ward, only falling deeper into the conspiracy,
all the while dealing with his past horrors and hallucinations that somehow help him in his
investigation. As the plot unfolds, vivid scenes and music help reveal ... Show more content on

The film starts by the two detectives arriving by boat accompanied by dark creepy clouds and
terrible weather which leads to hurricane type winds and stormy rain through the film. This helps
contribute to the already eerie and dark environment of the mental hospital/institution. The dull grey
lighting of the sky with the dramatic rocking of the boat and loud fog horns puts you on edge from
the get go. From the very beginning, it is apparent something strange is taking place on Shutter
Island and the director leaves the audience to gain the experience of watching everything unfold.
The setting of the movie is just as important as any other aspect of the film. The fact that it takes
place in a mental hospital/institution on a remote island surrounded by rocky cliffs, huge waves,
caves, steeps along with a creepy lighthouse, where it is said cruel experiments take place, screams
suspense and thrill. The island is surrounded with tall brick walls laced with electric fencing and
only one port to leave and arrive. The facility itself gives off an eerie feel with its creepy architect.
Inside, the buildings are littered with labyrinth style spaces that seem to almost consume its
inhabitants. Flickering, somewhat, unreliable lighting and approaching storm adds to sketchy
scenery. I feel this makes the audience feel at unease throughout the film, as if

Personal Identity In Shutter Island
The stimulus is from the movie, Shutter Island (Kalogridis; Shutter Island) Teddy Daniels has no
memory of anything from his past life and therefore is convinced that he is a detective solving a
disappearance of a prisoner on the island. In the end it is revealed that in fact he is the missing
prisoner and that his beliefs are not real. This leads me to consider the issue of personal identity,
what makes us truly human? Time has been a limitation for our understanding of ourselves, for we
believe that as time passes we stay the same person and have the same identity. On the other hand,
we can also agree that we are constantly changing both mentally and physically, sometimes without
us being consciously aware of it. Although we know ourselves either mentally or physically, why
when we do something out of the ordinary from our daily habits, do we say to others "Sorry, I'm not
feeling myself?" Is this a sign that we can sometimes not be ourselves, perhaps take on another ...

But according to John Perry, Locke's theory suggests that if one person remembers for example, one
person went to the market the day before and the next day recalls going to the market, then therefore
he went to the market. However what John Perry is saying is that what if the person does not
remember going to the market the day before, does that mean the person did not go? Does that mean
that person who went to the market the day before is not the person who forgot? Another critic,
Thomas Reid introduces "The Brave Officer Paradox" theory, which supports Perry's thought about
Locke's memory theory. This theory suggests that if a little kid gets beaten up at school, then grows
up to be an officer who as time passes becomes a general and as he grows older starts to not really
remember his childhood. Does is mean the general is that same kid who gotten beaten up? (Piccirillo

The Movie Shutter Island
The utmost insane individuals and the most intelligent doctors are located on Shutter Island. The
movie Shutter Island takes place in 1952 blank years after WWII. Leonardo Dicaprio's character is
sent to the island to investigate and find a missing patient, but what his character is trying to hide
from his reality, is that he is a patient too. Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the movie is Andrew
Laeddis.
Andrew Laeddis is a disturbed patient on Shutter Island who the doctors are trying to rehabilitate.
Before Andrew came to the island, he was a soldier in WWII. The horrible conditions that he was in
and the traumas that he saw during the war left him with post–traumatic stress when he returned
home. When Andrew came back from the war he was a U.S Marshall, and an alcoholic. Andrew
Laeddis was married to Delores Chanal and they had three beautiful children together. While
Andrew was married to Delores all of his friends and family told him that he should get a divorce,
and move away from his wife because she was crazy, depressed, and was going to hurt Andrew.
Andrew refused to listen to all of them because half of the time he was too drunk to care, and the
other half he was too in love. Delores told Andrew that she had a bug crawling across her brain, and
it made her do things she didn't want to do. Andrew knew she was sick but he didn't do anything
about it because he was too drunk. Andrew came home from work one day and could not find his
family in the house. He went

Shutter Island and Delusional Disorder
Shutter Island and Delusional Disorder Author Name University Name Shutter Island and
Delusional Disorder Shutter Island is a very complex movie seemingly about a U.S. Marshal named
Teddy Daniels. As the movie begins, Daniels and his partner are shown traveling to Shutter Island to
investigate the disappearance of a patient from a mental hospital. However, as the plot unravels we
see that Daniels has a mental disorder of his own. Though his diagnosis is not revealed in the movie,
I believe this character suffered from Delusional Disorder, Persecutory Type. According to the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM–IV–
TR), "the essential feature of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It appears that Andrew's disorder was definitely caused by a horrific precipitating event– his wife's
murder of their children and then his subsequent murder of his wife. Once we see, at the end of the
movie, that this occurred and Andrew is not really the U.S. Marshal named Teddy that he was
portraying, we see that he has been deluding himself for years. The DSM–IV–TR also mentions that
"the disorder may be chronic, although a waxing and waning of the preoccupation with delusional
beliefs often occurs." It also states that "full periods of remission may be followed by subsequent
relapses." At the end of the movie, Andrew is shown acknowledging the harsh reality that his
delusions have been masking. However, he quickly relapses the next day as we see when he calls
Dr. Sheehan by the name of Chuck. It is apparent that reality is too much for Andrew to handle. A
few things that I would like to touch on that the DSM–IV–TR does not list for Delusional Disorder
is the extreme violence that Andrew has exhibited. He nearly kills an inmate in Ward C, knocks out
a guard outside the lighthouse, and would've killed Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) if given a real gun.
Andrew also sets fire to a car and in different scenes, we see a very angry side of him. In conclusion,
Shutter Island shows a relatively accurate portrayal of a person struggling with Delusional Disorder,
Persecutory Type. Throughout

Film Review : Shutter Island
Comparing Dennis Lehane 's "Shutter Island" and Martin Scorcese 's adaptation is like comparing a
one punch knockout to a 10 round fight. Lehane 's 10 round fights keeps throwing these punches
and kicks which gives you details and time to think about what is happening, but Scorcese quickly
knocks you out, which is a complete surprise. Lehane gave the characters and the plot too much
detail while failing to pose the right question at the end. Just like a ten round fight, it fails to have
that strong punch and leave a lasting impact; both of which are important in a psychological thriller.
Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that is based on schizophrenia, a mental disorder that leads
to confusion, hallucinations and false beliefs. So for the audience to truly appreciate the book or the
movie, they have to feel confused and fail to realize what is real. Scorcese manages to create this
mood throughout his movie, but it is most apparent during Teddy 's dream scenes. In the first dream
scene Teddy is with his wife Dolores, inside a house. They are having a good time and it is bright
outside, then Dolores walks away slowly and says, "You have to let me go." It starts raining leafs
inside the house, it gets dark outside and when Teddy goes to hug Dolores she starts bleeding from
her stomach, all the while the music in the background feels like it can belong in a wedding and in a
funeral at the same time. Even more confusion is added when Dolores says, "You can 't leave,

Shutter Island Mental Illness
In Denise Lehane's shutter island, there are many diagnoses that fall with Andrew Laeddis. In the
movie, Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule, travel to Asheville hospital, located on Shutter
Island, for the criminally insane. They are investigating the disappearance of Rachel Solando who
was admitted for drowning her three children. As they are investigating, they discover that many of
the staff are not keen into looking at Rachel's disappearance. Dr. John Cawley refuses to turn over
records, and they learn that Solando's doctor, Dr. Lester Sheehan, left the island on vacation
immediately after Solando disappeared. Though they are given access to the hospital, they are told

These occur mainly while he is awake, but also manifest into his dreams of Rachel Solando. Thus,
Teddy is often having violent outburst caused by stress and by forcing him to live out his delusion
and find his wife's murderer, the doctors are essentially increasing the amount of stress Andrew will
experience from these memories and the doctors do not provide a safe, controlled environment for
Andrew to re–experience the traumatic events. Andrew and the other patients are continuously put
in danger while Andrew lives out his often violent and paranoid delusion. Chuck, Teddy's "partner"
does attempt to use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to alter Andrew's thoughts and feelings, but does
so in a way that is easily ignored. In the end, Teddy does come out of his delusion, but is
consequently distressed over what had occurred, that he willingly wants a lobotomy so he can forget
it. In conclusion, the mental illnesses cause Andrew Laeddis to shoot his wife, and then get admitted
into a hospital for the criminally insane. He then creates a second identity being unable to handle the
guilt of shooting his wife and ignoring the signs of hew illness. It had started when he had become
an alcoholic after serving at WW11 and developing post–traumatic stress disorder. If Teddy had
gotten help for his wife and her bipolar disorder as well as getting help for is post–traumatic stress

Similarities And Differences In The Movie 'Shutter Island'
Comparative Analysis – Shutter Island vs Insomnia Shutter Island and Insomnia are mystery
thrillers which follow two detectives that are determined to solve the case using their own
techniques. Shutter Island is a classic, old fashioned thriller directed by Martin Scorsese. The film is
based in 1954 and follows a federal marshal and his partner as they investigate the escape of a
prisoner from a mental facility. The federal Marshall suffers a series of hallucinations and
distractions on his path to uncovering the truth. Insomnia also follows a pair of detectives that suffer
their own set of distractions and hallucinations. The detectives are dispatched to a small northern
town where the sun never sets to investigate a murder of a teenager. The movie also resembles a
classic thriller film that is directed by Christopher Nolan. Both films rely on a build–up of suspense
and tension to deliver a compelling story. There are quite distinct similarities and differences in both
films that are portrayed in areas such as characterisation, cinematic effects and social issues. Shutter
Island and Insomnia use stylistic features to unpack the theme of appearance versus reality and
documents the effects of the psychological effects on the protagonists. Both films portray the
common theme of appearance vs reality in different ways. Noticeable similarities and differences
can be seen in the portrayal of social issues, cinematic techniques and characterisation. Shutter
Island revolves around Teddy Daniels, the protagonist who is a US Marshall sent to investigate the
disappearance of a prisoner from a mental asylum. The movie unfolds on shutter island where it is
apparent that there is a mystery to be solved. The movie takes the viewers on a psychological trip
through the mind of Teddy Daniels as he battles to find the missing prisoner. As he progresses
further with his case he starts suffering hallucinations and distractions which deviate him from
differentiating fantasy from reality. These hallucinations and distractions derive from the PTSD
Teddy suffers from. Teddy re–experiences his time in army fighting the Nazi's and his wife's death
which distract him from solving the case. Delving into Teddy's mind showed an

Shutter Island, by Dennis Lehane and The Yellow...
Gothic tales are known for being mysterious and gloomy. Certain elements are integrated throughout
the narrative to create the desired effect, and simultaneously suggest other ideas. Shutter Island by
Dennis Lehane and "The Yellow Wall–Paper" by Charlotte Perkins Stetson are significantly similar,
by the way both settings highlight the idea of madness. The relationship between setting and
madness is induced by the display of physical isolation, disturbing elements, and hallucinatory
incidents. To begin, with intent of initiating mystery in gothic stories, the locale is often portrayed as
being physically isolated, triggering insanity in the characters. This idea can be demonstrated by the
seclusion of the institution for the criminally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, as the patients in Shutter Island are cut off from society and merely exposed to criminally
insane people, it is hard for them to come back to a state of sanity. Briefly, physical isolation of the
locale in gothic literature finds its way into establishing madness, nevertheless, additional disturbing
elements impact on insanity as well. Just in the same way as isolation affects the mental state of
characters, disturbing elements in their surroundings can lead to this outcome in the narrative. In
Stetson's short story, the description of the room indicates that the "windows are barred [...] and
there are rings and things in the wall" (250). Additionally, the wallpaper "is stripped off in great
patches all around the head of [her] bed, about as far as [she] can reach, and in a great place on the
other side of the room low down" (251). These details symbolize how troubling the environment is
for Charlotte as she expresses antipathy, especially about the wallpaper by pointing out that "[she]
never saw a worse paper in [her] life" (251). In contrast, Lehane depicts guards using a powerful
hose to calm the agitated patients: "the guards [got] the hose working and fired a blast, blew the guy
off the bars, pushed him across the floor" (231). The hose is used as a tool to tranquilize critical
situations in Shutter Island, however, as "some men [...] moaned, moans so deep and abandoned
they could have come from a battlefield" (231)

The following is written to examine a connection made between the varying texts using

are evident of manipulation are 'Shutter Island ' a visual thriller directed by Martin Scorsese,
'Inception ' a visual action, adventure conducted by Christopher Nolan, 'Twelfth Night ' written by
William Shakespeare, and 'Tell–Tale Heart ' produced by Edgar Allan Poe. I decided to choose texts
that are recognized for their brilliance. Both visual and written texts are contrasted in relation to

Towards the final scenes of the film, Daniels becomes increasingly aware of the impact he has made
on his society, hence the title 'Shutter Island//Shot–her Island'. Daniels realizes his guilt through the
way the characters have helped him to discover who he really is, Daniels is able to sum it up to the
audience through the dialogue "Which would be worse: To live as a monster, or to die as a good
man?" The audience is able to understand that Daniels has accepted his reality, making him the
'good man'. A common theme today is not accepting reality or being in denial, this is due to the way
denying the reality of something enables the body to cope (bodies defence mechanism1). The
character of Daniels helps to influence today's society by showing us that accepting the reality we
create is better than to regret or deny it. Thus, changing the way, we perceive reality.
In the film 'Inception ', Nolan influences the audience to connect to the character of Dominic Cobb.
Like 'Shutter Island' the character (Cobb) in this film is also revolved around. Nolan uses a theme
evident in today's society, the perception of reality to develop and connect the portrayal of Cobb and
connect the audience. In terms of Cobb, this theme can be translated to his internal conflict of
dreams versus reality. Nolan inflects an emotional connection to Cobb and the audience through this
internal conflict. A

Psychoanalytic Interpretation of Shutter Island

Schizophrenia is defined by the American Psychological Association as, "a serious mental illness
characterized by incoherent or illogical thoughts, bizarre behavior and speech, and delusions or
hallucinations, such as hearing voices." Though only effecting 1% of the population, the complex
and long–term psychological disorder interferes greatly with the daily life of those diagnosed.
Victims of schizophrenia often experience a combination of positive (hallucinations, delusions,
disorganized speech/thinking/behavior, catatonic behavior, etc...), negative (affective flattening,
alogia, avolition), and cognitive (difficulty understanding, poor memory, difficulty integrating
thoughts, feelings and behavior) symptoms. In the movie Shutter Island, the main character
repeatedly shows the gradual increase of subtle signs of both schizophrenia and PTSD.
Shutter Island, directed by Martin Scorsese, contains an intense and intriguing plot line especially
when viewed from a psychoanalytic perspective. Edward "Teddy" Daniels, a US Marshal and WWII
veteran travels to an isolated island to investigate a case of a patient who has run away from
Ashecliffe Hospital. Alongside Teddy is his partner Chuck; they both investigate the disappearance
of Rachel Solando–a criminally insane patient who was admitted after drowning her three children.

many examples of a mental illness that are harmful to an individual. There are three effects that
seem more harmful and long–term. First, many people who are sleep deprived for an extended
period tend to have difficulties with their mental state. Mental illness can often cause an individual
to react to an emotional situation in a more violent manor. Most importantly, when one's mental state
is damaged, flashbacks and distorted memories are common. Many people who suffer from
psychological problems are often troubles with insomnia as a side effect because sleep requires a
steady mind. Shutter island is a thriller/drama featuring Leonardo DiCaprio playing the role of a
character named Teddy Daniels who is a U.S. Marshal who suffers with severe PTSD. The
beginning of the movie really makes you question how this movie is going to take place. This is a
type of movie with several flashbacks and starts in the middle of the movie, unfolding layers of
information before finally revealing the beginning in the end. The movie leads you to believe that
Teddy and his partner come to shutter island as U.S. Marshalls to investigate a patient that has
escaped from the mental hospital on shutter island. In order to access the island, Teddy and his
partner must take the boat in. Once they get off the boat they try to get every piece of information on
how this patient escaped.

Lobotomies In Shutter Island
The setting of any story always has a major impact on the how the reader interprets the novel and
what the reader would take from it. Any novel, play, or movie is a prime example of the principle
position that the setting plays in the novel. Similarly, in the novel Shutter Island, by Dennis Lehane,
the setting of the novel plays a critical role in how the reader would perceive the novel and how the
reader would understand the events that took place. Specifically, in Shutter Island, the lighthouse,
the time era, and the environment of the island, all have intricate ties to the character development,
the plot development, as well as the theme of the novel.
Firstly, the lighthouse and its appearance in the novel, which the reader may initially ... Show more

There are many separate elements of environment that have ties to the theme in Shutter Island; the
physical appearance of the island, the weather, the mental institution, and the darkness level are all
important to the novel. The first aspect of environment that helps the reader's understanding of the
theme is the physical appearance of the island. "The beach looked to have been lashed by the sea in
recent nights; it was strewn with shells and driftwood, mollusk skeletons and dead fish half eaten by
whatever scavengers lived here" (17). The description that the author gives of the beach gives the
reader the idea that the island is very visually unappealing, as well as it looking like it is a source of
intense evil and corruption. This scene incorporates many themes from Shutter Island, the most
apparent is the theme of appearance versus reality, although the island is visually unappealing with
many negative connotations added to it, a lot of good work is done on the island for the
inmates/patients, both ethically and morally. A second aspect of the environment of the island that
ties to a theme from the novel is the weather. "This has just been upgraded from a tropical storm to a
hurricane. Winds are coming in at around a hundred miles an hour right now. By midnight, they're
expected to hit a hundred

Analysis Of Black Swan And Shutter Island
Martin Scorsese and Darren Aronofsky are talented directors who have created many award winning
films that incorporate certain techniques used to enhance the audience's experience of the film, some
of their directorial techniques include symbolism, costume, lighting and dialogue. I have chosen
Scorsese's 2010 film Shutter Island along with Aronofsky's 2010 film Black Swan as each of these
films have scenes that incorporate the above mentioned techniques to portray the effects mental
illness has on a person's health and welfare. The scenes are each 8 minutes in length and run until
the closing credits begin. These techniques allow the audience to relate to the film by showing how
it links to the world we live in today where mental illnesses ... Show more content on

Symbolism is shown predominantly with the use of a war between black and white in relation to the
war between the persona's Nina has in her mind. These symbols allow the audience to link to the
director's main purpose of showing the effects mental illness has on the people suffering and also
others that are involved closely in their lives. In both Shutter Island and Black Swan symbolism is
featured profoundly throughout which gives the audience the chance to look for the deeper meaning
in what they are viewing. The use of a number of different techniques such as costume and props
displays hidden meaning in the film to the viewers and "how this is expressed could hit certain
levels of the psychological and emotional labyrinth that all of us have" according to Scorsese.
Symbolism in these films helps the audience understand the effects of mental illness by the cues
shown such as the plaster on Teddy's forehead and the scratch on Nina's back, the more obscure cues
given show that Teddy is a figment of imagination in Andrews mind and becoming a real black swan
is also a figment of imagination in Nina's mind. Events that have happened in both Nina and
Andrews past have taken over, leading them on the path of psychological disintegration. The
symbolism used to portray this in both films is

Shutter Island By Martin Scorcese
In the movie "Shutter Island", directed by Martin Scorcese, Teddy Daniels is an U.S. marshal and
war veteran who seems to be left very distraught when his wife, Dolores, was killed in an apartment
fire caused by Andrew Laeddis. The viewer can also see the trauma of when he liberated a
concentration camp during WWII because of his reoccurring dreams of both his experience at the
camp and his wife. When the viewer first sees Teddy it is 1954 and he and his new partner, Chuck,
are on a ferry headed to Shutter Island, which is home to Ashecliffe Hospital for the insane, to
investigate the disappearance of Rachel Solando. Rachel was brought to the hospital after drowning
her three young children and living in the delusion that her children never died. Teddy's purpose for
taking this assignment is because he believes that Andrew Laeddis is a patient at Ashecliffe.
In Teddy's investigation of Rachel's disappearance, Teddy becomes very paranoid due to the fact that
he thinks everyone is hiding the truth and that there are Nazi experiments going on in the secluded
lighthouse that is surrounded by guards. He becomes very determined to uncover the truth. As this
process goes on Teddy's dreams intensify and he starts to hallucinate his wife and a child, who he
believes is one of Rachel's children that she murdered. The girl asks him why he couldn't save her
both at the concentration camp and when she comes back to life, in a dream, when Rachel asks

Shutter Island, By Martin Scorsese
Shutter Island (2010), directed by Martin Scorsese, is a very well made, yet confusing movie. This
movie takes place at Ashecliffe Hospital a mental institution on Shutter Island for the criminally
insane. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main character, Teddy Daniels or Andrew Laeddis. During the
movie you will see both sides of Teddy Daniels and Andrew Laeddis. 1954 is the year shown in the
movie, when Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck arrive at Shutter Island. These two U.S. marshals
go to the island in order to investigate a missing patient, when suddenly the movie takes an
unexpected turn as psychological illnesses such as Delusional Disorder and Dissociative Identity
Disorder overcome Teddy. Other psychological disorders such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD), and Bipolar Disorder are shown in the movie (2015 Bubblews LLC). Delusional Disorder
Andrew's (Teddy) delusional disorder diagnosed by Dr. Cawley, contains symptoms that are similar
to those of schizophrenics, the main difference is that his hallucinations are similar to his delusions
whereas, schizophrenics' are not (2015 Bubblews LLC). In order to be diagnosed with this disorder,
a person must be showing signs for at least a month (2015 Bubblews LLC). Signs of Delusion

Shutter Island : Film Analysis Essay
This is a film analysis of Shutter Island. Shutter Island is a 2010 film directed by Martin Scorsese.
Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, this film is 138 minutes of psychological thrills and
horror. Shutter Island covers the field of psychopathology. More specifically, it covers psychotic
disorders, dissociative disorders, and treatment. Shutter Island is set in 1954 on Shutter Island,
Massachusetts at the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane. The opening scene of the film is
U.S. Marshals Edward Daniels and Chuck Aule arriving on Shutter Island. Daniels and Aule, played
by DiCaprio and Ruffalo, respectively, have come to investigate the disappearance of a patient from
Ashecliffe, Rachel Solando. Daniels was allowed in the hospital, but needed to obtain permission
and be accompanied in Ward C, which was only for the most dangerous patients. While inspecting
Solando's room, Daniels finds a piece of paper that seemed to have a clue on it, "The law of 4; who
is 67?" (Medavoy & Scorsese, 2010). When the authorities on the island are not cooperating with
Daniels, he decides to leave. However, a storm prevents them from returning to the mainland so
Daniels and Aule continue their investigation. Along with occasional migraines, Daniels sees
hallucinations of his wife Dolores Chanal, who, according to Daniels, died in a fire started by
arsonist Andrew Laeddis. In one such hallucination, Chanal told Daniels that Solando is still alive
and on the island. Then,

treatments, symptoms, causes and maniac episodes that the character demonstrates.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, "Bipolar disorder also known as manic–

Sleep deprivation can trigger an episode of mania and can reoccur with bipolar disorder. Looking at
Teddy Daniels, his bipolar disorder causes him to experience anger, unexplained pain and aches,
agitation and anxiety. In the movie Shutter Island, he is perceived as "the man of violence."
According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, "Rapid cycling is defined as four or
more manic, hypomanic, or depressive episodes in any 12–month period. With rapid cycling, mood
swings can quickly go from low to high and back again, and occur over periods of a few days and
sometimes even hours. The person feels like he or she is on a roller coaster, with mood and energy
changes that are out–of control and disabling. In some individuals, rapid cycling is characterized by
severe irritability, anger, impulsivity, and uncontrollable outbursts. While the term "rapid cycling"
may make it sound as if the episodes occur in regular cycles, episodes actually often follow a
random pattern. Some patients with rapid cycling appear to experience true manic, mild manic, or
depressive episodes that last only for a day. Teddy Daniels experiences rapid cycling and Bipolar
disorder. There is not much to do but to continue medication and seek therapy as he does so in the
movie. In the movie, Shutter Island, there is a scene where Teddy Daniels gets lost and ends up

Shutter Island Movie Review
In our society, almost all of us take a person only for face value. Rarely do we ever look past the
actions of a person and actually consider their motives or mental state. This is most likely because
doing so requires a lot of understanding and knowledge of the phenomena of the human mind. This
is where Psychology and Psychiatry come into play. Through these fields of study we are able to
expand our knowledge and understanding of the inner works of the human mind. It's crazy if you
think of it this way; but we just use our brains to study themselves, I mean what better way better
way is there? Unfortunately, in this field of study this kind of logic has been taken to the extremes
many times. In the past, psychological research ranged from simple personality tests to experiments
in isolated institutions for the mentally unstable. Nowadays, it would be hard to find good examples
of this but thanks to modern–day media we are able to see this extreme kind of research in full HD

disappearance of an inmate. As the investigation goes on, Daniels realizes that this institution is not
all it seems to be. Traditional noir films are known to be dark ones. The overall tone of Shutter

Shutter Island Film Analysis
Statement of intent
The theme I am getting across is the affect of trauma and how it changes the way the individual acts.
The films I will be discussing are Shutter Island ( 2010) , The Others (2001) , Black Swan (2010)
and Gone Girl ( 2014). Another idea I would like to explore is the relationship between the
characters and how it changes throughout the film.
Introduction
The brain doesn't forget about a traumatic event. They only way to overcome it is to get treatment
for it at a hospital. When you do not get the treatment it may lead to depression and suicide. The
films I will be discussing are Shutter Island (2010) Martin Scorsese , The Others (2001) Alejandro
Amenabar,Black Swan (2010) Darren Aronofsky and Gone Girl (2001) David Fincher. I will be
discussing how these films showed the theme.
Living with guilt can have a negative effect on the individual. In Shutter Island Dolores could not
handle looking after the children on her own. This resulted in her drowning her children in the lake
at the back of their house. She had clinical depression, this meant that she started acting different
and that was caused that caused her to burn down the apartment. The flashback in the film showed
the apartment on fire Teddy decided to move to a house on a lake away from people and it was away
from everyone. The colours in the flashback were colourful. This means that they were happy when
they were happy. Similarly to Dolores , Grace also killed her children because she couldn't

Examples Of Film Techniques In Shutter Island
Shutter Island, a psychological thriller, directed by Martin Scorsese incorporates techniques
throughout the film to reveal the truth in Shutter Island. The film is based on a missing patient
investigation, but the truth shows it is a psychological experiment on Andrew to bring him back to
sanity. By analysing certain scenes, including the opening scene, Teddy and Chuck are addressing
Dr Cawley, and whist Teddy and Chuck are interviewing the patients. These three scenes assist in
displaying Shutter Island through film techniques such as camera angle and mise en scene.
The opening scene uses camera angle techniques and symbolism to expose that Teddy is a prisoner
on Shutter Island. A medium shot of Teddy violently throwing up in the bathroom is followed by a
close up shot to observe Teddy at the window saying, 'that's a lot of water.' The audience can see that
Teddy is scared of the water. Water symbolises the truth and is continuously exposed throughout the
film. When the real facts are shown, the viewer Andrew Laediss is said to not be able to live with his
trauma and guilt hence creating a second personality (Teddy) to escape it. A medium shot is used as
Teddy is seen walking through chains and shackles clanging together. This gives the audience a
prison consistant sense, this is later linked to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Techniques are prominent during the opening scene, when Dr Cawley is talking to both Teddy and

the prison symbolism. They all help reveal the overall truth that Teddy is in fact the most dangerous

Shutter Island Mental Illness
The film Shutter Island depicts the story of a World War 2 veteran Andrew Laeddis and his
experience with mental illness, specifically portraying the memory phenomena of repressed and
recovered memories also known as dissociative amnesia and dissociative fugue (Kikuchi et.al.
2010). The illness is triggered by a psychologically traumatic event, which included discovering his
wife had murdered his three children, and in response, he killing his wife (Kikuchi et.al. 2010).
Additionally, the portrayal exhibits many of the criteria for a diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) (Friedman et.al. 1994). The DSM–V now classifies dissociative symptoms as an
additional subcategory of PTSD diagnosis, however, the film concentrates ... Show more content on

Conversely, this last ditch effort was being overseen by government appointed psychiatrists who
believed the only way to treat Laeddis and remove the threat he presented of harming other people,
was to lobotomize him. Subsequent developments in psychiatric treatment have proven that the
destruction of brain tissue does not remediate this kind of mental illness or justify this barbaric and
maiming procedure (Raz 2008; Johnson 2011). During the time period, this film is set, the illness
Laediss was suffering would probably have been known as psychogenic amnesia, which is a broad
term that covered a wide range of psychological mechanisms including dissociation, suppression
and cognitive avoidance (Staniloiu & Markowitsch, 2014). The comorbidity of PTSD is not overtly
explored throughout the film but is implicit in the story telling modality of flashback/flash forward
and gives credence to the dissociative amnesia, firstly, from the perspective of altered memory of his
experience of the Dachau concentration camp and secondly, and more relevant to the storyline in the
film, his inability to recall his autobiographical information in relation to his wife and children.

The Mayo clinic surmised that a patient who has PTSD may have frequent dramatic flashbacks of
the traumatic event, nightmares, problems with remembering memories including important parts of
the traumatic event, they may have feelings of guilt, trouble concentrating, and possible self–
destructive behavior. PTSD can be treated with cognitive therapy, exposure therapy, eye movement
desensitization and reprocessing, and medications such as antidepressants and anti–anxiety
medications(). Teddy experienced two great traumas in his life. One being what he saw during the
time he spent in Dachau during World War II. He stated that he could not believe that the Nazi's
would experiment on their own people and now he was convinced that the United States was doing
the same thing by performing psychosurgeries on patients in Shutter Island(). He had frequent
flashbacks to the things he did and experienced during his service in World War II. He often saw
dead bodies lying around in the snow with the image of his dead daughter on top of the bodies
asking him why he did not try to save her. The second major trauma experienced by Teddy occurred
when he came home to find that his wife had drowned their three children. Teddy then used his
personal revolver to shoot and kill his wife, "freeing her" from what Dolores, described to him as,

fun.()" This post–traumatic stress disorder and alcohol abuse greatly contributed to the development

Symbolism In Shutter Island
I agree with this statement that texts which deserve attention are those that challenge our thinking.
Martin Scorsese's 2010 masterpiece, Shutter Island, challenges our perception on the human mind.
Scorsese's film deserves our attention in the way that it creatively employs plot twists, uses
symbolism and how it portrays the complexity of trauma within the human mind. As a psychological
thriller, Shutter Island captivates the audience, taking us on the same journey that Teddy Daniels
experiences in his quest to find the truth.
Plot twists are creatively applied to Shutter Island. Presented at the start of the film, when Teddy
Daniels arrives on Shutter Island, Teddy Daniels is a U.S Marshall. This conveys that he is solving
the case of a missing patient who had escaped. Most importantly, he is searching for the killer of his
wife, Andrew Laeddis, who is supposed to be a patient on the island. To start the paranoia, Chuck
Aule says "What if while you were looking into them, they were looking into you?" Chuck
identifies the paranoia to unconsciously throw the audience off guard and Teddy Daniels then seeks
to discover the disturbing truths of the institution. As the truth is clarified, the plot of the film seems
to be apparent. As the core plot of Shutter Island is to find out "Who is 67?" said by Chuck Aule, it
is not until the end that everything is clarified. Teddy Daniels is in fact the missing "patient 67" who
is Andrew Laeddis. He then is disturbed with the truth that

Shutter Island tells the story about Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshall sent to investigate the
disappearance of one patient from a highly secure psychiatric facility. The story is told through
Teddy's eyes, where a first–person narrator is presented right off the bet, creating disbelief to Teddy
as a reliable narrator; mixed with the themes retained by classic noir, the story is twisted, altered and
the audience, as a result, is left manipulated. It is the unreliable narrator that makes the story so
intriguing, leaving viewers doubting their perspective of reality and the truth presented, – as the
protagonist does – making narration an integral part of both movies that are going to be analyzed.
By combining elements of traditional film noir with contemporary themes, neo–noir explores
conflicted antiheroes, trapped in a difficult situation and making choices out of desperation or moral
nihilism. Memento follows the story of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a man who suffers from
anterograde amnesia and tiles his world for clues in the search for his wife's murderer. Unable to
perform new memories, Leonard finds himself unable to trust what is told to him and relies solely
on tattooed messages and photographs. This distrust is passed on to the audience, where his self–
aware first–person narration alters the general perception of reality in the film. Both movies
embrace features retained by neo–noir and, combined with unreliable first–person narrator,
comment on the complexity of human nature and the darkness that comes with

Reflective Essay On Shutter Island
Dennis Lehane's novel, Shutter Island (2010), is about a man that was living one life when in reality
he was living a totally different life. Many times, people as well as leaders are living a life in their
mind that maybe different from what actions they are carrying out or what others think of them. A
method to determine if you are performing to the level you believe you believe you are is to have
the opinion of others. For example, you may look in a mirror and see yourself and you appear great,
when someone sees you they notice the hair you cannot see is out of place. Without their feedback,
or notification, you would be unware of the messed–up hair you cannot see from where you look.
Getting feedback from others at your level, above your lever, and below your level will give you
what is called 360–degree feedback. (Heathfield, 2017). National College for School Leadership
gives us a tool to use giving us a chance to receive 360–degree feedback to determine if our image
matches what others see.
Analysis
When I took the first discovery questionnaire I reflected on what image or metaphor I would use to
describe myself. One image that kept coming to mind was one of rescuer. I have this image of
myself that I am here to save everyone that I can. This is not true only of my personal life trying to
save my parents, spouse, kids, and grandchild from harm and hurt but also in my professional life.
Being a leader I feel I have to try to save others from the damaging effects of criticism. So, in an
ideal world I would be able to protect everyone. I have even been referred to at work as a "mother
hen" trying to protect others from making a mistake. During the second discovery, I was slightly
surprised in how I saw myself compared to how others see me not only as a coworker but also as a
spouse and a friend. First, as stated above, I considered myself a protector wanting to prevent others
from making mistakes I have made. My family agreed that I am a protector but also a provider, I
was somewhat surprised when I got a review from a coworker that felt I was untrusting and
overshadowing. I had to reflect on that for a while to value the feedback they were giving and how I
could be seen in such

Differences Between Shutster Island And Shutter Island
The psychological thriller is a film genre which pivots around the mental stability and psychological
states of its characters. Usually with a very domestic setting in order for the viewer to relate, they
rely heavily on techniques of sound and lighting to convey themes and ideas. I will be looking at
Martin Scorsese' Shutter Island (2010) and Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010) to analyse how
these techniques around sound and lighting are utilised to effectively develop and portray themes of
self–Identity and reality.
The effective use of lighting is important for both Shutter Island and for Black Swan as it allows for
the interpretation of the characters mental states. This allows the audience to better understand and
relate to the position of the characters and encourages us to think about how we might react
ourselves in similar situations.
A scene in Shutter Island that Martin Scorsese uses lighting to effectively develop the audiences
understanding of Andrew Laeddis and his ever developing mental state is the 'confrontation' scene
set in the lighthouse. As this scene begins Laeddis is in a very dimly lit and gloomy environment
within the lighthouse. These lighting conditions are appropriate for the scene Scorsese has set in the
mind of the viewer as the viewer is awaiting the reveal that the mental hospital is in fact a 'mind
altering' facility akin to the Nazi camps we are shown within the memory of Laeddis. However, as
Laeddis enters the top of the lighthouse there

The script is a very powerful character study exploring what it means to be insane and unraveling
our very concepts of reality. Shutter Island is absolutely gorgeous. The film is definitely Scorsese's
most visually rich work since Raging Bull. The cinematography perfectly mirrors the tone of the
story and is one of the strongest points of the film. The establishing shots are breath taking. They
create of the feeling of grander and adventure with an undertone of mystery and the unknown. The
environment Scorsese creates makes the viewer's skin crawl as effectively as fingernails on the
chalkboard. The score perfectly translates what is going on and further engraves the overall emotion
of mystery and uncertainty into the audiences' souls. The dream and hallucination sequences are a
treat to the eyes and are some of the most striking every put on celluloid. Most of the time when a
film tries to do one of these scenes they appear poorly executed and take away from the story. That
is not the case with Shutter Island as theses scenes provide a great story telling technique. They
create a haunting feeling that mirrored to the suspense in reality.
Where Scorsese falters is in the transition between reality and the nightmare world only found in
Teddy's psyche. The switches feel very clunky at times and bring the effect down. The audience can
almost always tell what is real and what is a nightmare. If the director could have created

Is Shutter Island Really Insane?
Shutter Island suggests a wide selection of philosophical questions, including "What truly is
insanity?" And "Can it ever be cured?" This film speaks volumes to society's conclusions on what is
sane and what is not. And to some effect, calls all post–modern psychological diagnoses into
question. Shutter Island takes the audience on many twists and turns, but one question remains... is
Teddy really insane or not? A variety of language techniques and stylistic features were used to
convey that both situations are probable. 'Shutter Island' is a water–bound mental hospital,
accommodating the criminally insane. The tale begins with a U.S. Marshal and ex–war veteran

Shutter Island Journal

  • 1. Shutter Island Journal Ryley Emslander Due date: Thursday, Jan. 14 Journal 5 I am reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, I am on page 369, and I finished the book. The remaining half of my book is about Teddy and Chuck on a journey to find Andrew Laeddis, the killer of Teddy's wife, and they check Ward C on the island and the lighthouse and there is no sign of him. Teddy and Chuck get past some obstacles in their journey to the lighthouse, Chuck gets lost, and Teddy tries to escape the island on the ferry. In the end, Teddy encounters Mr. Cawley in the lighthouse; it is revealed that Teddy has been on the Island for two years and Teddy's real name is Andrew Laeddis. It is also revealed that Chuck has been Dr. Sheehan the whole time and Teddy is actually Rachel Laeddis's husband. In this journal, I will be characterizing Teddy in the second half of the book and questioning why Dr. Sheehan would pretend to be Teddy's partner, Chuck, the entire time. G– As I am reading, I will be Characterizing Teddy Y– paranoid of the worst case–scenario R– paranoid that Chuck was risking his life. • 3. How Does Terry Malloy Change In On The Waterfront On the Waterfront is set on the docks, a very dismal place. The black and white photography make the streets, alleyways and small, cramped apartments seem dark and bleak. While the union bosses live well, the workers seem trapped by their situation, with no way to get out. Terry Malloy is a low level worker for the union boss, who is not really aware that he is a part of the corruption. He is asked to lure Joey Doyle to the roof of his apartment building, and believes that the union men just want to "lean on him a little bit" (On the Waterfront) about testifying before the waterfront crime commission. When he learns that he actually lured Joey to his death, he is upset by the fact that he betrayed his friend, and acts very defensively when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, for most of the characters, choosing to do what is right can be difficult. Opposing the union bosses can be dangerous, as evidenced by the deaths of Andy, Joey and Kayo. Therefore, many of the dock workers prefer to do nothing and remain alive. Other characters, such as Father Barry and Edie, have a strong internal moral code, and personal considerations do not impact their decision to do what is right. However, in the case of Terry, his background and current affiliations present a number of obstacles which prevent him from freely listening to what his conscience is telling him to do. Terry is "owned" by Johnny Friendly, and cannot protest against the jobs that are given to him. This ownership goes back to the days when Terry was a prize fighter, and was made to take a fall when Friendly bet against him. Charley, Terry's older brother, is a key member of Friendly's group, and was the one who told Terry he had to take the fall. When Friendly learns that Terry has been subpoenaed to appear before the crime commission, he sends Charley to persuade Terry to stop seeing Edie, and take a high paying job with the union. Terry refuses and Charley pays the price with his life. When Terry goes looking for Friendly to get revenge, Father Barry tells him: "don't fight him like a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Comparison One Flew Over Shutter Island When I watched One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (Forman, 1975), I was reminded of a movie I had watched a couple years earlier. The movie Shutter Island (Scorsese, 2010) resembles One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (referred to as Cuckoo's Nest after this) in many surprising ways. For starters, both of these films are filmed almost entirely in mental institutions. Cuckoo's Nest follows the story of a man named R.P. McMurphy when he's placed into a mental institution after pretending to be mentally ill. Shutter Island, however, is about a U.S. Marshall named Teddy Daniels who is investigating the disappearance of an escaped, criminally insane patient at an institution located on an isolated island. At the beginning of Shutter Island, Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule are seen heading to an island in a ferry. Daniels is obviously seasick and Chuck checks on him to make sure he's okay. The ferry they're on can be seen rocking side–to–side, which seems to be giving the audience the idea that just as the ferry is unstable, so are Daniels and his partner. This instability unravels as the plot progresses, with Daniels finally making the realization that he's a delusional patient himself at the end of the movie. The music at the beginning ... She's seen as a babysitter or caregiver to the patients and she always keeps track of them as if they're children. Likewise, Dr. John Cawley often restricts Daniels from doing what he needs to do for his investigation. He appears in many unexpected places, such as in the lighthouse at the end of the movie, keeping watch over Daniels. Dr. John Cawley brings Daniels closer and closer to discovering the truth about himself throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wiley Sr. Core Assessment Paper–Abnormal Psychology –PS 401 March 3, 2011 Abstract Shutter Island is a film depicting several of the many facets of Abnormal Psychology as defined and studied over the course of this term. Several of the concepts discussed in our lectures and demonstrated during our classroom time were evident and vividly depicted in the film including personality disorders past and present; stress and anxiety disorders; psychosis, and mood disorders. There were others subtly displayed in the film however, these listed were of primary focus and coincidence most closely with our study this term. While focusing more on the abnormal, Shutter Island ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, if parents or guardians are spending less time with children, who or what is teaching them right from wrong? Like previous generations today's youth are greatly influenced by what they see and hear. Outside of parents or legal guardians, the big screen, television, music, and peers have the greatest influence over young people today. What is being communicated to our youth falls short on doses of old– fashioned morals and values. Analysis on Family Morals in the 21st Century Now, here is where things get a little complicated. Because as "free moral agents" we each have a right to decide what has value or merit in our lives and our environment could very well determine how our value system is formed. Boston University professor and social scientist Glenn Loury raises some critical issues in his essay "Values and Judgments: Creating Social Incentives for Good Behavior." He claims there are underlying factors that lie at the root of behavior. This is particularly true when we examine dysfunctional behavior. Dysfunctional behavior is thought to be more prevalent in impoverished communities. Some debate that a common dysfunctional correlation exists among individuals whether they live in poor, middle, or upper class communities. It appears dysfunctional behavior is not limited to one particular segment of our population. If the ground is fertile ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Shutter Island Dissociative Identity Disorder ther research is needed. Character Information Andrew Laeddis from the film Shutter Island (Medavov, Messer, Fischer, & Scorsese, 2010) is a roughly 30–year–old Caucasian American male living in Boston. Although his education and family history is unknown, it is known that he was a former US Marshal and also a highly decorated army veteran from World War 2 (WW2). His marital status is a widower, as he murdered his wife Dolores, after which he was administered to Ashecliffe hospital for the criminally insane. Psychosocial History After serving as a soldier in WW2, Laeddis worked as a US Marshal in Boston. During this time he had three children with his wife, however as she became manic–depressive and suicidal, Laeddis began drinking. One night ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As illustrated earlier, when identified as Daniels, he shows no recollection of his past trauma. Further, although he has dreams and flashbacks of his time in WW2, they are limited only to his experience of the Dachau concentration camp. This memory itself is always distorted with images of his own children as prisoners and victims of the camp, and further he remembers killing guards (which is unlikely to have happened). In terms of personal information, when identifying as Daniels, he refuses to believe that he ever had three children or that he was ever administered to Ashecliffe. There are also many gaps in his recall of everyday events, for example he does not recall being given any medication and he cannot recognise his own psychiatrist. He also holds no recollection of any of his attacks on orderlies, guards and other patients. When informed he had attacked and almost killed another patient two weeks earlier, because he had been called Laeddis rather than Daniels, he shows no recollection and denies the event ever happened. Further, he does not have any recollection of when he switches between the two identities. Unfortunately, information about Laeddis' upbringing is lacking, meaning further research into his familial history is needed to fully understand the extent of his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Psychological Analysis Of Shutter Island The movie Shutter Island presents wrenching twists and turns from a psychological state of mind. The author of the story, Lehane, makes it certain that the psychic mind of the main character helps to enhance the plot of the story. The darkness of the story is based off of the year nineteen fifty–four to drive the setting of the story. Throughout the film, clues are given that eventually give way to the realization of reality. When the story begins in medias res, it helps engage the audience and jumpstart theories. Manipulation is a present factor used throughout the story with both the audience and the characters to create a thrilling story. Lehane (the author) uses Teddy's psychic state to create both tension and uncertainty to drive the plot of the story. The character is used as a mechanism to misguide the audience. In the movie, Teddy is first portrayed as a well–driven and intelligent man who seems to be on edge very often. From the beginning of the story, the circumstances seem to be eery as they directly lead up to the grande finale. The author uses Teddy to manipulate the audience into believing one theory while in Shutter Island, the psychiatric doctor uses "fake beings" to manipulate Andrew Laeddis. The psychic state of the main character helps in guiding the audience through the uncertainty of the plot. The viewers are told a story that drives the plot into becoming a plot twist. Suspense and uncertainty react hand in hand to guide the story and make it more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Shutter Island : The Film Big Twist After watching Martin Scorseses much misunderstood Shutter Island for a second time I have decided to evaluate both the stories meandering plot and its profound themes. Shutter Island is truly a tragedy of how one man cannot accept his reality. This film involves a character played by Dicaprio, filled with guilt of the death of his wife and losing his grasp on what is real and what's not. In Shutter Island we are led to believe that Leonardo Dicaprio is playing a U.S Marshall under the name of Teddy Daniels. Daniels along with his new partner Chuck (played by Mark Ruffalo) has been led to Shutter Island to investigate the mysterious vanishing of Rachel Solando. The films big twist is that Teddy is in fact a patient of the mental facility who murdered his wife after she drowned their three children in the lake. The main character conflict of Shutter Island is the story of one man and his denial to accept reality. Throughout the film Teddy is plagued by dreams and visions of his dead wife, as well as disturbing flashbacks to his involvement in the Second World War. This is a man who has seen terrible things and is trying to bury them away by pretending to be somebody else. Shutter Island is a film that becomes deeper on repeat viewings and seeing it a second time a lot of the delicacies of the performances and more low key signs become much more clear and meaningful. Also on a second viewing two other conflicts develop, conflicts that are more to do with the films historical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Essay on Shutter Island Directed by Martin Scorsese, Shutter Island is an American mind bending thriller film based on Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel also named Shutter Island. Leonardo DiCaprio takes the lead role as a U.S Marshall named Teddy Daniels, who along with his partner, Chuck Aule (played by Mark Ruffalo), are investigating the mysterious disappearance of a patient at a highly guarded and isolated psychiatric penitentiary located on Shutter Island. Teddy Daniels runs about the island trying to uncover the mysteries of the Shutter Island psychiatric ward, only falling deeper into the conspiracy, all the while dealing with his past horrors and hallucinations that somehow help him in his investigation. As the plot unfolds, vivid scenes and music help reveal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film starts by the two detectives arriving by boat accompanied by dark creepy clouds and terrible weather which leads to hurricane type winds and stormy rain through the film. This helps contribute to the already eerie and dark environment of the mental hospital/institution. The dull grey lighting of the sky with the dramatic rocking of the boat and loud fog horns puts you on edge from the get go. From the very beginning, it is apparent something strange is taking place on Shutter Island and the director leaves the audience to gain the experience of watching everything unfold. The setting of the movie is just as important as any other aspect of the film. The fact that it takes place in a mental hospital/institution on a remote island surrounded by rocky cliffs, huge waves, caves, steeps along with a creepy lighthouse, where it is said cruel experiments take place, screams suspense and thrill. The island is surrounded with tall brick walls laced with electric fencing and only one port to leave and arrive. The facility itself gives off an eerie feel with its creepy architect. Inside, the buildings are littered with labyrinth style spaces that seem to almost consume its inhabitants. Flickering, somewhat, unreliable lighting and approaching storm adds to sketchy scenery. I feel this makes the audience feel at unease throughout the film, as if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Personal Identity In Shutter Island The stimulus is from the movie, Shutter Island (Kalogridis; Shutter Island) Teddy Daniels has no memory of anything from his past life and therefore is convinced that he is a detective solving a disappearance of a prisoner on the island. In the end it is revealed that in fact he is the missing prisoner and that his beliefs are not real. This leads me to consider the issue of personal identity, what makes us truly human? Time has been a limitation for our understanding of ourselves, for we believe that as time passes we stay the same person and have the same identity. On the other hand, we can also agree that we are constantly changing both mentally and physically, sometimes without us being consciously aware of it. Although we know ourselves either mentally or physically, why when we do something out of the ordinary from our daily habits, do we say to others "Sorry, I'm not feeling myself?" Is this a sign that we can sometimes not be ourselves, perhaps take on another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But according to John Perry, Locke's theory suggests that if one person remembers for example, one person went to the market the day before and the next day recalls going to the market, then therefore he went to the market. However what John Perry is saying is that what if the person does not remember going to the market the day before, does that mean the person did not go? Does that mean that person who went to the market the day before is not the person who forgot? Another critic, Thomas Reid introduces "The Brave Officer Paradox" theory, which supports Perry's thought about Locke's memory theory. This theory suggests that if a little kid gets beaten up at school, then grows up to be an officer who as time passes becomes a general and as he grows older starts to not really remember his childhood. • 19. The Movie Shutter Island The utmost insane individuals and the most intelligent doctors are located on Shutter Island. The movie Shutter Island takes place in 1952 blank years after WWII. Leonardo Dicaprio's character is sent to the island to investigate and find a missing patient, but what his character is trying to hide from his reality, is that he is a patient too. Leonardo DiCaprio's character in the movie is Andrew Laeddis. Andrew Laeddis is a disturbed patient on Shutter Island who the doctors are trying to rehabilitate. Before Andrew came to the island, he was a soldier in WWII. The horrible conditions that he was in and the traumas that he saw during the war left him with post–traumatic stress when he returned home. When Andrew came back from the war he was a U.S Marshall, and an alcoholic. Andrew Laeddis was married to Delores Chanal and they had three beautiful children together. While Andrew was married to Delores all of his friends and family told him that he should get a divorce, and move away from his wife because she was crazy, depressed, and was going to hurt Andrew. Andrew refused to listen to all of them because half of the time he was too drunk to care, and the other half he was too in love. Delores told Andrew that she had a bug crawling across her brain, and it made her do things she didn't want to do. Andrew knew she was sick but he didn't do anything about it because he was too drunk. Andrew came home from work one day and could not find his family in the house. He went ... • 21. Shutter Island and Delusional Disorder Shutter Island and Delusional Disorder Author Name University Name Shutter Island and Delusional Disorder Shutter Island is a very complex movie seemingly about a U.S. Marshal named Teddy Daniels. As the movie begins, Daniels and his partner are shown traveling to Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a mental hospital. However, as the plot unravels we see that Daniels has a mental disorder of his own. Though his diagnosis is not revealed in the movie, I believe this character suffered from Delusional Disorder, Persecutory Type. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM–IV– TR), "the essential feature of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It appears that Andrew's disorder was definitely caused by a horrific precipitating event– his wife's murder of their children and then his subsequent murder of his wife. Once we see, at the end of the movie, that this occurred and Andrew is not really the U.S. Marshal named Teddy that he was portraying, we see that he has been deluding himself for years. The DSM–IV–TR also mentions that "the disorder may be chronic, although a waxing and waning of the preoccupation with delusional beliefs often occurs." It also states that "full periods of remission may be followed by subsequent relapses." At the end of the movie, Andrew is shown acknowledging the harsh reality that his delusions have been masking. However, he quickly relapses the next day as we see when he calls Dr. Sheehan by the name of Chuck. It is apparent that reality is too much for Andrew to handle. A few things that I would like to touch on that the DSM–IV–TR does not list for Delusional Disorder is the extreme violence that Andrew has exhibited. He nearly kills an inmate in Ward C, knocks out a guard outside the lighthouse, and would've killed Dr. Cawley (Ben Kingsley) if given a real gun. Andrew also sets fire to a car and in different scenes, we see a very angry side of him. In conclusion, Shutter Island shows a relatively accurate portrayal of a person struggling with Delusional Disorder, Persecutory Type. Throughout ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Film Review : Shutter Island Comparing Dennis Lehane 's "Shutter Island" and Martin Scorcese 's adaptation is like comparing a one punch knockout to a 10 round fight. Lehane 's 10 round fights keeps throwing these punches and kicks which gives you details and time to think about what is happening, but Scorcese quickly knocks you out, which is a complete surprise. Lehane gave the characters and the plot too much detail while failing to pose the right question at the end. Just like a ten round fight, it fails to have that strong punch and leave a lasting impact; both of which are important in a psychological thriller. Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that is based on schizophrenia, a mental disorder that leads to confusion, hallucinations and false beliefs. So for the audience to truly appreciate the book or the movie, they have to feel confused and fail to realize what is real. Scorcese manages to create this mood throughout his movie, but it is most apparent during Teddy 's dream scenes. In the first dream scene Teddy is with his wife Dolores, inside a house. They are having a good time and it is bright outside, then Dolores walks away slowly and says, "You have to let me go." It starts raining leafs inside the house, it gets dark outside and when Teddy goes to hug Dolores she starts bleeding from her stomach, all the while the music in the background feels like it can belong in a wedding and in a funeral at the same time. Similarities And Differences In The Movie 'Shutter Island' Comparative Analysis – Shutter Island vs Insomnia Shutter Island and Insomnia are mystery thrillers which follow two detectives that are determined to solve the case using their own techniques. Shutter Island is a classic, old fashioned thriller directed by Martin Scorsese. The film is based in 1954 and follows a federal marshal and his partner as they investigate the escape of a prisoner from a mental facility. The federal Marshall suffers a series of hallucinations and distractions on his path to uncovering the truth. Insomnia also follows a pair of detectives that suffer their own set of distractions and hallucinations. The detectives are dispatched to a small northern town where the sun never sets to investigate a murder of a teenager. The movie also resembles a classic thriller film that is directed by Christopher Nolan. Both films rely on a build–up of suspense and tension to deliver a compelling story. There are quite distinct similarities and differences in both films that are portrayed in areas such as characterisation, cinematic effects and social issues. Shutter Island and Insomnia use stylistic features to unpack the theme of appearance versus reality and documents the effects of the psychological effects on the protagonists. Both films portray the common theme of appearance vs reality in different ways. Noticeable similarities and differences can be seen in the portrayal of social issues, cinematic techniques and characterisation. Shutter Island revolves around Teddy Daniels, the protagonist who is a US Marshall sent to investigate the disappearance of a prisoner from a mental asylum. • 29. Shutter Island, by Dennis Lehane and The Yellow... Gothic tales are known for being mysterious and gloomy. Certain elements are integrated throughout the narrative to create the desired effect, and simultaneously suggest other ideas. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane and "The Yellow Wall–Paper" by Charlotte Perkins Stetson are significantly similar, by the way both settings highlight the idea of madness. The relationship between setting and madness is induced by the display of physical isolation, disturbing elements, and hallucinatory incidents. To begin, with intent of initiating mystery in gothic stories, the locale is often portrayed as being physically isolated, triggering insanity in the characters. This idea can be demonstrated by the seclusion of the institution for the criminally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, as the patients in Shutter Island are cut off from society and merely exposed to criminally insane people, it is hard for them to come back to a state of sanity. Briefly, physical isolation of the locale in gothic literature finds its way into establishing madness, nevertheless, additional disturbing elements impact on insanity as well. Just in the same way as isolation affects the mental state of characters, disturbing elements in their surroundings can lead to this outcome in the narrative. In Stetson's short story, the description of the room indicates that the "windows are barred [...] and there are rings and things in the wall" (250). Additionally, the wallpaper "is stripped off in great patches all around the head of [her] bed, about as far as [she] can reach, and in a great place on the other side of the room low down" (251). These details symbolize how troubling the environment is for Charlotte as she expresses antipathy, especially about the wallpaper by pointing out that "[she] never saw a worse paper in [her] life" (251). In contrast, Lehane depicts guards using a powerful hose to calm the agitated patients: "the guards [got] the hose working and fired a blast, blew the guy off the bars, pushed him across the floor" (231). The hose is used as a tool to tranquilize critical situations in Shutter Island, however, as "some men [...] moaned, moans so deep and abandoned they could have come from a battlefield" (231) ... The audience is able to understand that Daniels has accepted his reality, making him the 'good man'. A common theme today is not accepting reality or being in denial, this is due to the way denying the reality of something enables the body to cope (bodies defence mechanism1). The character of Daniels helps to influence today's society by showing us that accepting the reality we create is better than to regret or deny it. Thus, changing the way, we perceive reality. In the film 'Inception ', Nolan influences the audience to connect to the character of Dominic Cobb. Like 'Shutter Island' the character (Cobb) in this film is also revolved around. Nolan uses a theme evident in today's society, the perception of reality to develop and connect the portrayal of Cobb and connect the audience. Though only effecting 1% of the population, the complex and long–term psychological disorder interferes greatly with the daily life of those diagnosed. Victims of schizophrenia often experience a combination of positive (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech/thinking/behavior, catatonic behavior, etc...), negative (affective flattening, alogia, avolition), and cognitive (difficulty understanding, poor memory, difficulty integrating thoughts, feelings and behavior) symptoms. In the movie Shutter Island, the main character repeatedly shows the gradual increase of subtle signs of both schizophrenia and PTSD. In the movie Shutter Island, there are many examples of a mental illness that are harmful to an individual. There are three effects that seem more harmful and long–term. First, many people who are sleep deprived for an extended period tend to have difficulties with their mental state. Mental illness can often cause an individual to react to an emotional situation in a more violent manor. Most importantly, when one's mental state is damaged, flashbacks and distorted memories are common. Any novel, play, or movie is a prime example of the principle position that the setting plays in the novel. Similarly, in the novel Shutter Island, by Dennis Lehane, the setting of the novel plays a critical role in how the reader would perceive the novel and how the reader would understand the events that took place. There are many separate elements of environment that have ties to the theme in Shutter Island; the physical appearance of the island, the weather, the mental institution, and the darkness level are all important to the novel. The first aspect of environment that helps the reader's understanding of the theme is the physical appearance of the island. "The beach looked to have been lashed by the sea in recent nights; it was strewn with shells and driftwood, mollusk skeletons and dead fish half eaten by whatever scavengers lived here" (17). The description that the author gives of the beach gives the reader the idea that the island is very visually unappealing, as well as it looking like it is a source of intense evil and corruption. This scene incorporates many themes from Shutter Island, the most apparent is the theme of appearance versus reality, although the island is visually unappealing with many negative connotations added to it, a lot of good work is done on the island for the inmates/patients, both ethically and morally. Rachel was brought to the hospital after drowning her three young children and living in the delusion that her children never died. Teddy's purpose for taking this assignment is because he believes that Andrew Laeddis is a patient at Ashecliffe. In Teddy's investigation of Rachel's disappearance, Teddy becomes very paranoid due to the fact that he thinks everyone is hiding the truth and that there are Nazi experiments going on in the secluded lighthouse that is surrounded by guards. • 55. The Shutter Island Movie Review Shutter Island Movie Review In our society, almost all of us take a person only for face value. Rarely do we ever look past the actions of a person and actually consider their motives or mental state. This is most likely because doing so requires a lot of understanding and knowledge of the phenomena of the human mind. This is where Psychology and Psychiatry come into play. Through these fields of study we are able to expand our knowledge and understanding of the inner works of the human mind. It's crazy if you think of it this way; but we just use our brains to study themselves, I mean what better way better way is there? Unfortunately, in this field of study this kind of logic has been taken to the extremes many times. The films I will be discussing are Shutter Island ( 2010) , The Others (2001) , Black Swan (2010) and Gone Girl ( 2014). Another idea I would like to explore is the relationship between the characters and how it changes throughout the film. Introduction The brain doesn't forget about a traumatic event. They only way to overcome it is to get treatment for it at a hospital. When you do not get the treatment it may lead to depression and suicide. The films I will be discussing are Shutter Island (2010) Martin Scorsese , The Others (2001) Alejandro Amenabar,Black Swan (2010) Darren Aronofsky and Gone Girl (2001) David Fincher. I will be discussing how these films showed the theme. Living with guilt can have a negative effect on the individual. In Shutter Island Dolores could not handle looking after the children on her own. This resulted in her drowning her children in the lake at the back of their house. She had clinical depression, this meant that she started acting different and that was caused that caused her to burn down the apartment. The flashback in the film showed the apartment on fire Teddy decided to move to a house on a lake away from people and it was away from everyone. The colours in the flashback were colourful. By analysing certain scenes, including the opening scene, Teddy and Chuck are addressing Dr Cawley, and whist Teddy and Chuck are interviewing the patients. These three scenes assist in displaying Shutter Island through film techniques such as camera angle and mise en scene. The opening scene uses camera angle techniques and symbolism to expose that Teddy is a prisoner on Shutter Island. A medium shot of Teddy violently throwing up in the bathroom is followed by a close up shot to observe Teddy at the window saying, 'that's a lot of water.' When the real facts are shown, the viewer Andrew Laediss is said to not be able to live with his trauma and guilt hence creating a second personality (Teddy) to escape it. Teddy then used his personal revolver to shoot and kill his wife, "freeing her" from what Dolores, described to him as, "the insect living inside her brain, she could feel it clicking across her skull pulling wires just for fun.()" This post–traumatic stress disorder and alcohol abuse greatly contributed to the development of dissociative identity disorder in ... • 67. Symbolism In Shutter Island I agree with this statement that texts which deserve attention are those that challenge our thinking. Martin Scorsese's 2010 masterpiece, Shutter Island, challenges our perception on the human mind. Scorsese's film deserves our attention in the way that it creatively employs plot twists, uses symbolism and how it portrays the complexity of trauma within the human mind. As a psychological thriller, Shutter Island captivates the audience, taking us on the same journey that Teddy Daniels experiences in his quest to find the truth. Plot twists are creatively applied to Shutter Island. Presented at the start of the film, when Teddy Daniels arrives on Shutter Island, Teddy Daniels is a U.S Marshall. This conveys that he is solving the case of a missing patient who had escaped. Most importantly, he is searching for the killer of his wife, Andrew Laeddis, who is supposed to be a patient on the island. To start the paranoia, Chuck Aule says "What if while you were looking into them, they were looking into you?" Chuck identifies the paranoia to unconsciously throw the audience off guard and Teddy Daniels then seeks to discover the disturbing truths of the institution. As the truth is clarified, the plot of the film seems to be apparent. As the core plot of Shutter Island is to find out "Who is 67?" said by Chuck Aule, it is not until the end that everything is clarified. Teddy Daniels is in fact the missing "patient 67" who is Andrew Laeddis. He then is disturbed with the truth that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. the audience, as a result, is left manipulated. It is the unreliable narrator that makes the story so intriguing, leaving viewers doubting their perspective of reality and the truth presented, – as the protagonist does – making narration an integral part of both movies that are going to be analyzed. By combining elements of traditional film noir with contemporary themes, neo–noir explores conflicted antiheroes, trapped in a difficult situation and making choices out of desperation or moral nihilism. Memento follows the story of Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), a man who suffers from anterograde amnesia and tiles his world for clues in the search for his wife's murderer. Unable to perform new memories, Leonard finds himself unable to trust what is told to him and relies solely on tattooed messages and photographs. This distrust is passed on to the audience, where his self– aware first–person narration alters the general perception of reality in the film. Both movies embrace features retained by neo–noir and, combined with unreliable first–person narrator, comment on the complexity of human nature and the darkness that comes with ... • 72. Reflective Essay On Shutter Island Dennis Lehane's novel, Shutter Island (2010), is about a man that was living one life when in reality he was living a totally different life. Many times, people as well as leaders are living a life in their mind that maybe different from what actions they are carrying out or what others think of them. A method to determine if you are performing to the level you believe you believe you are is to have the opinion of others. For example, you may look in a mirror and see yourself and you appear great, when someone sees you they notice the hair you cannot see is out of place. Without their feedback, or notification, you would be unware of the messed–up hair you cannot see from where you look. Getting feedback from others at your level, above your lever, and below your level will give you what is called 360–degree feedback. (Heathfield, 2017). National College for School Leadership gives us a tool to use giving us a chance to receive 360–degree feedback to determine if our image matches what others see. Analysis When I took the first discovery questionnaire I reflected on what image or metaphor I would use to describe myself. One image that kept coming to mind was one of rescuer. I have this image of myself that I am here to save everyone that I can. This is not true only of my personal life trying to save my parents, spouse, kids, and grandchild from harm and hurt but also in my professional life. Being a leader I feel I have to try to save others from the damaging effects of criticism. So, in an ideal world I would be able to protect everyone. I have even been referred to at work as a "mother hen" trying to protect others from making a mistake. During the second discovery, I was slightly surprised in how I saw myself compared to how others see me not only as a coworker but also as a spouse and a friend. First, as stated above, I considered myself a protector wanting to prevent others from making mistakes I have made. My family agreed that I am a protector but also a provider, I was somewhat surprised when I got a review from a coworker that felt I was untrusting and overshadowing. I had to reflect on that for a while to value the feedback they were giving and how I could be seen in such ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 74. Differences Between Shutster Island And Shutter Island The psychological thriller is a film genre which pivots around the mental stability and psychological states of its characters. Usually with a very domestic setting in order for the viewer to relate, they rely heavily on techniques of sound and lighting to convey themes and ideas. I will be looking at Martin Scorsese' Shutter Island (2010) and Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan (2010) to analyse how these techniques around sound and lighting are utilised to effectively develop and portray themes of self–Identity and reality. The effective use of lighting is important for both Shutter Island and for Black Swan as it allows for the interpretation of the characters mental states. This allows the audience to better understand and relate to the position of the characters and encourages us to think about how we might react ourselves in similar situations. A scene in Shutter Island that Martin Scorsese uses lighting to effectively develop the audiences understanding of Andrew Laeddis and his ever developing mental state is the 'confrontation' scene set in the lighthouse. As this scene begins Laeddis is in a very dimly lit and gloomy environment within the lighthouse. These lighting conditions are appropriate for the scene Scorsese has set in the mind of the viewer as the viewer is awaiting the reveal that the mental hospital is in fact a 'mind altering' facility akin to the Nazi camps we are shown within the memory of Laeddis. However, as Laeddis enters the top of the lighthouse there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The script is a very powerful character study exploring what it means to be insane and unraveling our very concepts of reality. Shutter Island is absolutely gorgeous. The film is definitely Scorsese's most visually rich work since Raging Bull. The cinematography perfectly mirrors the tone of the story and is one of the strongest points of the film. The establishing shots are breath taking. They create of the feeling of grander and adventure with an undertone of mystery and the unknown. The environment Scorsese creates makes the viewer's skin crawl as effectively as fingernails on the chalkboard. The score perfectly translates what is going on and further engraves the overall emotion of mystery and uncertainty into the audiences' souls. The dream and hallucination sequences are a treat to the eyes and are some of the most striking every put on celluloid. Most of the time when a film tries to do one of these scenes they appear poorly executed and take away from the story. That is not the case with Shutter Island as theses scenes provide a great story telling technique. They create a haunting feeling that mirrored to the suspense in reality. Where Scorsese falters is in the transition between reality and the nightmare world only found in Teddy's psyche. The switches feel very clunky at times and bring the effect down. The audience can almost always tell what is real and what is a nightmare. If the director could have created ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Is Shutter Island Really Insane? Shutter Island suggests a wide selection of philosophical questions, including "What truly is insanity?" And "Can it ever be cured?" This film speaks volumes to society's conclusions on what is sane and what is not. And to some effect, calls all post–modern psychological diagnoses into question. Shutter Island takes the audience on many twists and turns, but one question remains... is Teddy really insane or not? A variety of language techniques and stylistic features were used to convey that both situations are probable. 'Shutter Island' is a water–bound mental hospital, accommodating the criminally insane. The tale begins with a U.S. Marshal and ex–war veteran named Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule. Set during the early–mid 1950's, they arrive on Shutter Island with the intent of investigating the case of the missing Rachael Solando; a patient residing in Ashcliffe Hospital who has inconspicuously disappeared from her locked room. She was committed to the hospital after murdering her three children and Teddy and Chuck go through many trials and tribulations in order to find Rachael and solve the mystery surrounding her disappearance. A former alcoholic, who is troubled by the recollections of his deceased wife and traumatic thoughts of his service in WWII, Teddy expresses his true motive of finding Andrew Laeddis, the man who Teddy claims murdered ...
