Introduction
Throughout the years, males have dominated the academic disciplines of science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with very few females finding their way in the mix
(Steinberg, Okun, & Aiken, 2012). Those females enrolling in the STEM majors soon find
themselves questioning why they have, and many quickly change their majors to more female–
accepting professions (Steele, James, & Barnett, 2002). The view that women lack the intellect to
succeeded in STEM disciplines has been a prevailing one for much of history (Cadinu, Maass,
Rosabianca, & Kiesner, 2005). Many researchers have questioned whether it is social stigma

Stigmatism of a minority group might inadvertently confirm expectations of majority group
memberst (Cadinu, et al. 2005). Merely stating a stereotype, such as that men are smarter than
woman, can cause women to experience arousal, anxiety, and temporary cognitive deficits (Rydell,
Rydell, & Boucher, 2010). These responses to stereotype threat can cause lower performance on an
exam, even if a female and a male are at the same level of intelligence and qualification.
Although the underlying process of stereotype threat are not entirely known, it could be connected
to impairments of working memory and side effects of anxiety (Krendel, Richeson, Kelley, &
Hetherton,2008). In a study done by Schmader and Johns (2003), woman under stereotype threat
showed a lower memory capacity along with subject–specific negative thoughts. This may be
related to poor performance because the threat triggers performance anxiety, which in turn lowers
self–confidence. The anxiety triggers subject specific negative thoughts that consume the working
memory making it difficult to retrieve vital information for good performance. In a similar study
done by Sekaquaptewa and Thompson (2003) showed that who is near you while you are

that "Affluenza" can be prevented. But on the opposing with all of these advertisements one can
shop around, compare the prices and find the best deals for him or her using the marketers plan
against them and finding the best quality product that fits ones resources, and standard of living.
Although, marketers are in the business of promoting materialism and in turn perpetuating
"Affluenza" it all comes down to personal choice and self–control.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman 's career as a leading feminists and social activist translated into her
writing as did her personal life. Gilman 's treatment for her severe depression and feelings of
confinement in her marriage were paralleled by the narrator in her shorty story, "The Yellow
Wallpaper".
Charlotte Perkins Gilman was born in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her parents, Mary Fitch
Perkins and Fredrick Beecher Perkins, divorced in 1869. Her dad, a distinguished librarian and
magazine editor, played a large role in her education, stressing science and history. Fitch was often
away for long periods of time during her childhood, leaving his wife and children with other family
members. This frequently exposed Gilman to her three great aunts who, along with her mother 's
self–reliance, influenced Gilman 's feminist beliefs and need to effect social reform ("The Yellow
Wallpaper" 278). One of her great aunts, Harriet Beecher Stowe, supported the abolition of slavery
and wrote Uncle Tim 's Cabin, a story depicting the life of African American slaves (Wikipedia

feminism and the third, Isabella Beecher Hocker, was an advocate for women 's suffrage. As an

John Donne: A Medieval Man but A Metaphysical Poet
When examining writings from the Baroque period, John Donne is widely acknowledged as the
leader of metaphysical poetry. While there are other well–known writers who made this style of
poetry popular, Donne is by far the most discussed and most analyzed. The term metaphysical
developed from John Dryden describing Donne's work as "[affecting] the metaphysics, not only in
his satires, but in his amorous verses, where nature should only reign"(Dryden). After this analysis
of Donne's work, others such as Samuel Johnson began to use metaphysical when describing not
only Donne's poetry, but also the other poetry from this period, which was written similarly.
According to The Oxford English Dictionary, metaphysical is defined as "senses relating to
philosophical speculation or intellectual abstraction" (Simpson). In other words, this poetry is
beyond the natural; it takes something physical and pushes the meaning from natural to something
philosophical. T.S. Eliot argues that the term metaphysical was only used for Johnson to describe
John Donne's difficult imagery, and therefore we should reconsider using the term so loosely to
describe a larger group of poets (Eliot 249). Whether one agree with Eliot or not, upon delving

Nehemiah Rebuilds the Wall: A Story of Leadership and Bravery The story of Nehemiah reflects the
unexampled characteristics of a man who heard the voice of the Lord and follow Him. However, to
better understand the significance of the rebuilding and the role of Nehemiah into the story it is
necessary to analyze the sociocultural background throughout this narrative. First, Jerusalem was
still laid in ruins from its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar II 140 years earlier. A city that has its
walls and gates broken down was entirely vulnerable to outside aggression. Therefore, in response
to Jerusalem's condition, Nehemiah mourned and cried. This actions of deep sorrow were often
accompanied with the shaving of the head and beard. Fasting was often added to prayer so the
individual could concentrate wholly on the issue at hand, at the expense of physical needs (Walton,
472). In contrast, the initiative of rebuilding the wall was not pleasant before Sanballat eyes, a
Samaritan leader and one of the Jews' enemies, as he said: "Will they revive the stones out of the
heaps of rubbish and burned ones at that?" (The Wheaton Standard Bible, Neh. 4.2). This phrase
may refer to the ancient Near Eastern idea that stones blackened with fire were cursed and could not
be reused as building material (Walton, 476). In addition, the Hebrews and descendants of
Nehemiah were considered the original audience who first heard the story. Next, the Book of
Nehemiah illustrates the repetition style and a chiastic structure which connects each event. The
sixth unit of the story recounts how Nehemiah directed the rebuilding of the walls and gates of
Jerusalem during much opposition. For instance, Nehemiah 4:1–6 introduces the first time that the
character suffers verbal opposition when he is ridiculed by Sanballat. The same situation is
presented at Nehemiah 6:10–14 when Sanballat and Tobiah intimidated Nehemiah so that he would
sin. This portion of the narrative reflects a repetition among the episodes when the Nehemiah's
prayers seem to be the response of his enemies' verbal opposition. Moreover, at the center of the unit

Mary Shelley made her reputation of being one of the best Romantic authors on the basis of just one
book. The notoriety that came with being the daughter of two famous authors helped, as did her age
at the time of conceiving the book, but Frankenstein was the only one of her stories to achieve any
fame. The level of fame it achieved, however, was astounding. In fact, even though it was originally
published in 1818, Alasdair Gray still saw fit to use Frankenstein as his primary inspiration for Poor
Things in 1992. The Gothic Romantic nature of both of these books is well known, but the
monstrosity contained within them is an interesting topic to examine.

The story grows from this inception to the somewhat vague description of Victor 's creation. Shelley,
through Victor, through Walton, explains the manner in which Victor prowled graveyards and such
to compile body parts, much like Shelley used disjointed segments of individual observations to
compile her story. Then, she delves into a birth. The animation of his project scares Victor so much,
that he immediately abandons the creation, only to later see the monster in his room, reaching for
Victor with a grin. Victor ‘escapes, ' abandons his child again. The lack of parenting and guidance
is remarkable, no doubt inspired by Mary 's own situation at the time. Then, as Victor wanders
aimlessly, he encounters his childhood best friend, Clerval. Clerval is one of the truly honest
characters in the book, though he also has problems with his father. He is Victor 's true friend, one
who will love him regardless, though Victor is monstrous enough to miss that fact, and tells Clerval
nothing of his creation.
Shelley then introduces us to Justine Moritz, a maid at the Frankenstein 's home, who was
mistreated by her mother before coming to work for them. Her love for the Frankenstein family is
deep and pure. This is why it is such a shock to find out that she is the primary suspect in the murder
of Victor 's younger brother. The boy was strangled; a sign of rage and power issues, and a locket
containing his mothers picture was stolen.

In Mary Shelley 's case one of her favorite authors that she seeked for inspiration was John Milton
in Paradise Lost. During the duration of the horrible storm she turned to Paradise Lost for
developing the character Frankenstein. In the novel Frankenstein Victor plays the role of god by
creating a human. He can be considered a god because he is creating a human from scratch wis is
metaphorically compared to when people describe Gods works. In Paradise Lost Victor can be
compared to Satan who is an archangel who is punished for seeking knowledge that he had no right

For centuries Africa American's have been stripped from their freedom, their history, and their
human rights due to racism and white supremacy. However, in 1868 there was a light at the end of
the tunnel, African Americans thought there was an end to racism and the beginning of equality
when the 14th Amendment was created. The 14th Amendment stated, "All persons born in the
United States are citizens of the United States... no state shall make or enforce any law which shall
abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any
person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law"(The Founding Fathers) With the
privilege of being a citizen a person is entitled to universal freedom (Walton, Smith). Even though
the 14th amendment enforced that the state shall not deny privileges to citizens, it never brought
about equality for African–Americans because of racism. The Amendment was intended to create
equality, however its meaning was misinterpreted and ultimately benefit white males. Because of
this, it denied them of their right to freedom from barriers created to keep African Americans
inferior such as Jim Crow Laws, Gorilla Warfare for Voting, and Institutional Racism. Due to

Opposition to the Development The opposition to the Sunset strip addition is significant in that it

concern over the development's placement on the northern border of West Hollywood which calls

Laurel Canyon Association openly opposes the development and works to preserve the Hollywood
Hills area. The non–profit organization released a Justifications for Appeal in August 2016 in order
to modify the development to fit the community's needs. This is often the case where community
members are opposed to such large–scale development for fear of major modifications to existing
establishments. West Hollywood City councilmembers Lauren Meister and John D'Amico have also
advocated against the development. The two councilmembers supported the views of the community
and worked towards stopping the approval of the development. To the two members' displeasure the
final decision to "drop its opposition to the project came in a 3–to–2 vote," ultimately ending the

I let my teenage angst get the best of me sometimes and call them "the worst", and sometimes, even
today, I don't understand why they've told me "no". However, they are still my parents and no matter

In this passage, Job taught us to listen to the Lord despite our hurt or our belief that something is
possible. This means that we have to trust in the Lord that his will for our lives will be done.
Because we have to trust Gods authority over our lives, we also have to trust God 's love for our

In the short stories "The Last Stop,'' by Brian Cable, "I'm not Leaving Until I Eat This Thing," by
John T. Edge and "The Long Goodbye: Mother's Day in Federal Prison," by Amanda Coyne, all feel
the same when it comes to the businesses they fear. In all of these short stories each main character
tries to overcome fear by going into the businesses. All of the businesses have weird qualities, and
that makes the character feel weird going into the place. The characters each fear something and it
makes it hard for them to achieve their goals in overcoming the fear. Although Cable and Edge both
overcome their fear of the business, Coyne leaves her problem unresolved. People think that some
businesses are revolting, like working in a morgue, selling pig lips, or working in a prison. For
example, In the story "The Last Stop," by Brian Cable, Cable used the quote "'Come in.' said the
sign. 'We're always open"' (Cable 58). Cable tries to use humor by saying, come in we're always
open. Meaning death does not have a time limit. Death can happen at any time of the day. In the
next story, "I'm not Leaving Until I Eat This Thing," by John T. Edge, Edge writes "We do our best
to corner the market on lips" (Edge 142). Most consumers would not want to buy pig lips let alone
try them. It is hard for them to get pig lips in business so they are trying their hardest to sell them.

Genetic interference of Caenorhabditis Elegans within the process of Chemotaxis Abstract For the
majority of animals on earth, responding to chemical stimuli could mean the difference between life
and death. Taste is an example of sensing chemical stimuli–however, this response is not entirely
dependent on genes, as tasting something will not necessarily trigger a gene to activate. Within a
simpler organism however, such as Caenorhabditis Elegans, there is a complex behavior that is
mediated by three sensory neurons and transduce chemical stimuli to move muscles that move an
animal forward(attraction) or backwards(repulsion). By placing these organisms on several plates
which will inhibit genetic expression, and then testing chemotaxis at a later point, it is possible to
determine which genes are responsible for chemotaxis. The global sample averages of the
chemotaxis indexes of CEH–36 and CEH–27 are somewhat inconclusive, with a mean of 0.5815 for
CEH–36 and 0.6981 for CEH–27. Overall, the results for CEH–27 are likely to show that there is a
lack of genetic interference with chemotaxis where CEH–36 is less definitive. Introduction Within

Fasting was often added to prayer so the individual could concentrate wholly on the issue at hand, at the expense of physical needs (Walton, 472). In contrast, the initiative of rebuilding the wall was not pleasant before Sanballat eyes, a Samaritan leader and one of the Jews' enemies, as he said: "Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish and burned ones at that?" (The Wheaton Standard Bible, Neh. 4.2). This phrase may refer to the ancient Near Eastern idea that stones blackened with fire were cursed and could not be reused as building material (Walton, 476). In addition, the Hebrews and descendants of Nehemiah were considered the original audience who first heard the story. Next, the Book of Nehemiah illustrates the repetition style and a chiastic structure which connects each event.
