Tokyo A Dystopian
The film portrays Tokyo after the destruction caused by World War III. Tokyo has now turned into neo
–Tokyo, a dystopian society built from the ruins.
In just thirty years the government has managed to help build the economy up, allowing the city to prosper. With all of this progress and prosperity,
the people have become self centered, making a social and economic gap. The gap has grown so significant that the wealthy cling to what money they
have and those on the bottom suffer with nothing. There does not seem to be much help from city officials, as well. They only focus on their own
advancement, which causes problems for the citizens. Riots occur in the streets and gangs are becoming more violent resulting in terrorizing the good
citizens.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It suddenly starts to turn into a hellish nightmare. The colonel walks towards Kiyoko, she tells him about a dream she had about Akira. She warns
them that he will return and destroy the city. Later on the colonel has a meeting with the head council about funding for the Akira project. He gets
frustrated when they refuse to add further funds to the cause. He storms out in anger and distress about the future. Back in the hospital Tetsuo's
physic powers are starting to get more powerful. He tries to fall back asleep but cannot, he sees hallucinations of a bunny, car and bear. They
manifest into bigger versions of themselves and start attacking Tetsuo. They only stop when they see Tetsuo's foot bleed. It turns out they were the
three greenish children. Tetsuo becomes enraged at the fact someone would try to kill, he goes off and wreaks havoc. The resistance has infiltrated
the compound through the sewers to gain access to find Tetsuo, suddenly a patrolling guard spots them and a fight breaks out. In an epic struggle they
manage to get onto the speeder and search for Tetsuo. Back at the hospital Tetsuo's power is growing more the more he uses it. He then encounters
Kaneda who is trying to help him but Tetsuo's power has gotten the best of him and he rejects his help. Tetsuo then flies off to find where Akira is. He
ends up going to the Olympic Stadium where underneath Akira is

In this series, calmness and timelessness were his primary focus. His attempt was not to define the world, but to reveal it slowly through patient
observation and intense perception. The locations ranged from the English Channel and the Cliffs of Moher to the Arctic Ocean, from Positano, Italy,
to the Tasman Sea and from the Norwegian Sea at Vesteralen to the Black Sea in Turkey. The black
– and–white photos are all the same size. When
looking at the series you'll notice that the horizon line of the sea and sky line up perfect across the whole entire series. Also that no human presence
is visible, suggesting that this is a world filled with essential "truths" beyond human comprehension. In recent years, Sugimoto's work has become
very concrete and more abstract. His work as been in many exhibitions from Solo Exhibitions to Group Exhibitions. Most recently, Sugiomoto's work
has been featured as the cover for U2's 2009 album No Line on the Horizon, and in 2008 a retrospective of his work travelled from the Museum der

After implementing the FMP, planting and cutting were greatly dropped. Figure 5 shows cutting volume. Harvesting fuelwood in the coppice forest
already stopped in 1960's. Coppice forest is mainly composed of some kinds of oaks, and is regenerated with fresh shoots from the stumps of trees
after harvesting fuelwood is done. And both coniferous and broad leafed timber declined around 1990. Planting area followed almost the same trends.
After 1995 statistics of harvest volume are not available. The YWB officially asserts that it has made no profits on sales of timber since 1994.
Measured Impacts on Finance –Building a New Relationship–
Not only the YWB's FMP but also the economic relationship between Yokohamacity and Doshi Village was completely changed.
Until 1991 the YWB Forest, as stated above, gained about ВҐ40 million worth of timber annually (Figure 6). They logged mainly broadleaf secondary
coppice forest, and natural forest which supplied the villagers with lumber, firewood and charcoal, woodworking materials, pulping wood, and other
materials for personal and industrial use. On the occasion of the 1991 change in the management plan, Doshi village expressed concerns about the
economical decrease, saying that, "We are favorable to the FMP change with respect to water retention and disaster prevention, and we want a plan
that will have no negative impact on the livelihood of the villagers working in forestry" (Yamanashi local page of Asahi Newspaper on April 15th,

Feminist Criticism In The Thirteenth Night
Feminist criticism, a "direct product of the 'women's movement' of the 1960s", is a broad school of theory that examines the representations of women
in literature as well as the socially constructed concept of femininity (Barry, 2009, p.116). Besides challenging the previously–unquestioned
'naturalness' of gender roles in society, feminist criticism is also concerned with female experiences of oppression, and seeks to expose "how aspects of
our culture are inherently patriarchal" (Purdue University, 2010). In addition, feminist criticism raises the question of whether or not an inherently
female language exists, and aims to change the traditional literary canon that previously marginalized women writers.

Oseki's identity is defined by her social roles in relation to male figures, in line with the Confucian concept of 'Three Obediences' – a daughter to her
father, wife to her husband, and mother to her son. Winston argues that "she exists in an inchoate body, for she is neither her own person nor a
corpse"; her true 'self' exists acceptably only within the cracks of her fragmented identity, and she struggles to suppress her desire for agency
(Winston, 2004, p.10). Her attempt to give up her roles as wife and mother – an attempt to reject the roles dictated by the patriarchy – for example, is
deemed as "selfishness" despite her husband's abuse (Winston, 2004, p.2). Moreover, Oseki's lack of consent to her marriage to Isamu, in addition to
the fact that her attempt to seek divorce cannot be done without the consent and support of her father, are both clear evidences of how she is
commodified within the patriarchal institutions of family and marriage. When she asserts at the end of Part I that "after tonight I'll think of myself as
completely belonging to Isamu", she emphasizes her own position as little more than a property and object of exchange between male authoritative

Geo World Cities Economic and Cultural Authority Essay
Question: Demonstrate why world cities are powerful centres of economic and cultural authority
A world city is a large city that has been outstripped its natural urban network and become part of an international global system. World cities have
become the central connecting point for the multiplicity of linkages and interconnections that sustain the contemporary world economy, and its social
and political systems. According to the 2004 GaWC studies world cities can be ranked based on their provision of 'advanced producer services' such as
accountancy, advertising, finance and law. In 2008 the rankings according to the GaWC determined thatLondon and New York were Alpha ++ cities
whilst Sydney, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore were Alpha... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, world cities influence the flow of both finance and investment throughout the world thus resulting in economic authority.
World cities are markets for a vast range of goods and services as they are areas of massive accumulations of wealth and have extraordinary purchasing
power. The importance of these cities as markets is shown by patterns of concentrated retailing in high–order consumer goods, such as clothing,
jewellery, and art. Streets such as Fifth Avenue in New York are famous for their retailing of very expensive goods.
Cultural Authority
World cities are centres for a range of cultural facilities and world entertainment. They have theatres, opera houses, large entertainment. They host
major cultural and sporting events ranging from art exhibitions to tennis tournaments. The 2008 Beijing Olympics and Fifa's world cup in Munich
both were viewed by over a billion people worldwide. New York for example has a very strong cultural authority with the New York Times reporting
that in 2010 48.7 million people visited New York spending $31 billion, which is almost 7% increase when compared to the 45 million in 2009. New
York is home to a range of museums such as the museum of modern art and the Guggenheim, Broadway, famous universities such as Colombia and
NYU, and centres for the arts such as the Julliard School and Lincon centre. Therefore the cultural authority of a world city stems from its ability to

Japan And Japanese Culture
Japan is an East Asian Island country with a distinct cultural identity. Samurai values, kimono clothing, Noh Theater, woodblock art, and sumo
wrestling are among the many instantly identifiable aspects of Japan's culture. Many of Japan's cultures have developed through centuries of feudal
rule and has benefited from the country's geographic isolation.
Japan put in place a policy of national seclusion for hundreds of years until the 1850s, but it succumbed to an imperialist power by the end of the 19th
century. The culture of Japan was spread internationally through occupation in military campaigns before World War II. Japan then reinvented itself
after the war and began to flourish economically. Japanese influence spread not by militarist might, but through economic integration with much of the
international community in the last part of the 20th century (Encyclopedia Britannica Online, "Japan," 2011).
East of the Asian mainland, Japan is a country of mountainous volcanic islands and intermittent valleys situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Japan has
four main islands, the biggest is Honshu, which contributes to sixty percent of the nations total land area and eighty percent of the entire population.
Some of the other major islands of Japan include Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Lying south of the main islands are the Ryukyu Islands, including
Okinawa. With a land area totaling 377,835 sq km (145,902 sq mi), Japan is a fraction smaller than California. Neighboring

Movie Analysis of Tokyo Drift: Fast and Furious
I agree with people who say movies aren't based on real life experience, but I am pretty sure producers have specific messages to tell their audience.
Movies might be long and time taking, but when there is free time to spend why not lay back and watch a good movie? Today I will be reviewing
one of my favorite movies of all time, Tokyo Drift. Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, is one the great movies of Fast and Furious series. Fast and
Furious movies have a lot of fans throughout the world and the great thing about this series is that they are all relatable and continue the story that
began in the year 2001. But there is something different about Tokyo Drift that keeps it unalike with other Fast And Furious movies. This is why I
will be doing a review on it. Tokyo Drift is made up of 2 words which are Tokyo and drift. Of course many people know where Tokyo is located, but
not a lot of people know what the word drift means in driving vocabulary. Drifting is one the popular methods racers use to dodge, show off or
enjoy while driving. There is something about drifting that every time it happens somewhere, it excites the people that know what it is. Seeing your
tires burn and smoke while drifting, it gives you good vibes. In many arcades I've seen little kids drift on the car stimulators and smile because they
accomplished that skill. Of course it is not a good thing to race and drift in real life it is actually illegal, but there are people who do it knowing all the

Essay On Sushi
The first thing to realize is that Sushi doesn't mean raw fish it actually refers to a dish of vinegared rice served with various fillings and toppings.
Sushi was originally invented as a means of preservation when fermented rice was used to store fish for anything up to a year. This was known as
narezushi, and in fact the rice was thrown away and only the fish consumed. A later variant called Nama nare zushi, invented in the 16th Century,
introduced the idea of using vinegared rice, which was consumed instead of being thrown, away and is still enjoyed today particularly in Japan's
ancient Capital Kyoto.
Sushi is said to have originated in China between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC as a means of preserving fish and salt. Narezushi, the original form
of sushi has been made in Southeast Asia for centuries and nowadays there are still traces of it in some parts. Narezushi appeared in Japan in the
8th century and still survives today in the form of food such as carp sushi. Narezushi was primarily a means of food preservation and each Japanese
religion developed its own version and those days so she was eating during feast days and festivals and was also an integral part of the celebration.

Comparing Tokyo And Auckland 's Development
Cities located globally increase significantly through the process of urbanisation, temporally and spatially. Through urbanisation, technology is a huge
advancement for cities. The main technology advancement is transportation. I have chosen to compare Tokyo with Auckland. I will discuss Tokyo and
Auckland's development (1880–1930), outlining pressures and opportunities created by technology advancements and how Tokyo is caused by
urbanisation, comparing with Auckland.
Tokyo's population is approximately 13.35million with rapid urban growth. The land area of Tokyo is approximately 2,187km2. Tokyo was first
established in 1869. Tokyo was originally named Edo (small fishing village) in early 1800's. Tokyo was a part of the Musashi Province development.
The early–18th century, there were not much transportation in Edo, including planes, trains and cars. The main transport mode was walking, boats or
horseback. Any cargo transported by people, oxen/horses, were by large carts or traditional boats. The Edo period (1603–1868), Edo did not have
carriages drawn by horses compared to horse–back carriages in Auckland. The main cause of cargo were by boats. Other transport were palanquins
(equivalence to taxicabs). Palanquins were used in the city to transport people. Road networks were then a main pressure for Tokyo as to transport
freight to long distances between cities. The Tokugawa government started to develop road infrastructure, by connecting highways between Edo and

Symbolism Of Modernization In Kokoro
Modernization Symbolized in Kokoro
By James Schradle for IAH 204 In this modern era the gulf between modernized nations and nations who are not grows constantly, and if a country
hopes to bridge the growing gap they must advance quickly. As with any other growth, growing pains are routine. Among others is the pain of the
existence of generations whose world is changed completely over the course of a lifetime. In few places is this effect starker than in Japan's modern
history, a country whose traditional ideals had to find a way to adapt modern westernized ideals to a historically traditional nation in a small amount of
time. This era, the Meiji Restoration, put Japan through their growing pains and pushed the country to compete on the global level. Natsume Soseki
offers a character whose relationships in the novel "Kokoro" are analogous to the progression and end of this Meiji era and how it effected the
individual and their perceptions of change. Sensei is a character whose life and relationships offer a full range of understanding of the difficulties
caused by the changing times. Though it is not apparent exactly when he was born, it's clear that it was between the dawn modern and the end of
pre–modern Japan. This era was exceedingly traditional, a time in Japan's history when cities were not tall and gray with streetcars stretching through
them. A time when traditional social patterns prevailed and Confucian values still lingered. This can be seen in a quote

Technological Advances : The Industrial Revolution
Technological advances happened, primarily in Western countries during the 1800s known as the Industrial Revolution. It first started in Britain,
because of Britain's flourishing economy and vast expendable resources. These technological advances included new weapons and new means of
transportation. However, the technological advances were not always beneficial. One problem was too many resources were being used too quickly.
As a way to combat this problem, Western countries decided to trade with Eastern countries. One of these countries they wanted to trade was Japan.
When American fleets first arrived in Japan, Japanese people were surprised at how advanced the American navy was compared to theirs. Japan

This caused Russia, Britain, France, and Holland to send fleets to Japan trying to make them trade with them. Japan still not modernized at this
moment, had to agree to all their demands, signing treaties which allowed for relations and trade with them. This in turn, infuriated the Japanese
people, because they realized they were weak, submitting to foreign countries' demands so easily. This had also showed how their current Shogun,
Tokugawa and Japan were weak, and so the Japan decided they needed a change in government, and wanted a new government. Samurai leaders wanted
change, and so in 1867, the Tokugawa Shogun gave up his position the ruler Emperor Mutsuhito took over. Mutsuhito, better known asEmperor Meiji,
and taking control of the government, decided he needed to modernize his country. This period is known is the Meiji Restoration which lasted between
1868 when Mutushio became emperor in 1912 when Meiji died. During the Meiji Restoration, their emperor, Meiji helped Japan accomplish many
technological advancements. Some of the things Japan accomplished in just 44 years include, increasing their military strength, establishing a central
government, creating a public transportation and communication system, educating their population, and inventing new technology. The reason they
were able to accomplish so many things in this short amount of time was, sending diplomats to learn about Western civilization which helped them
innovate their technology,

"Often it takes a huge crisis to make a society change," says Toshihiko Hayashi, an economics professor at Doshisha University inTokyo, who has
studied the legacies of natural disasters. "For Japan, even two lost decades after the bubble burst were not enough to fundamentally change the
country's economic and political systems. But this crisis is different. It could be the catalyst that finally changes Japan."
These days, few would have predicted that Japan's way to renewal would be blazed by its young people, who were supposed to have other things on
their minds: nearly 1 in 10 young Japanese is unemployed, and almost one–third of university graduates get no job offers. Many more can find only
part–time work.
Yet even if the new mood of sleeves–rolled–up volunteerism persists among young Japanese, they may still need leadership: someone to organise
where the supplies and relief efforts should go. But in today's Japan – a nation of lacklustre politicians, bureaucrats and salarymen – that seems to be
lacking. "The sad fact about many young people today is that if there's one person who leads the way, they will follow and work hard," says Ayumi
Yamamoto, a Tokyo graduate student who has volunteered to helpearthquake survivors as part of a newly formed group called Tohoku Rising (Tohoku
is the northeastern region that bore the brunt of the disaster). "But right now

Financial Accounting Concerns
1. Tokyo AFM recognized premium revenue at the time it received the policyholder's up–front cash payment. The company's accountants argued that
since the level of up–front payments received from policyholders had been stable over the last few years, this method was an appropriate reflection of
economic reality.
For example, Fuji Computers entered into a five–year insurance contract with Tokyo AFM against earthquake damage to its headquarters building. As
is customary, it paid the 100 million premiums for the five–year coverage up front in cash.

Another expense that can be considered for capitalization is advertising costs. Only advertising costs that are direct–response advertising can be
capitalized. Direct–response advertising is advertising for which the primary purpose is to stimulate sales to customers or potential customers that
have specifically responded to the advertising and it results in probable future benefits. Hence $20,000 cost of marketing efforts incurred over the past
six months to promote Home Umbrella which is direct response advertising cost should be capitalized and amortized over the period of contract.
3. Broadly speaking, two major types of insured events could give rise to losses covered by insurance contracts:
* Events that actuarial analysis could assess and predict with a high level of accuracy across a large number of contracts (for example, events covered
by automobile insurance). * Catastrophes, which were generally adverse natural events such as earthquakes and hurricanes, but which could also be
human–induced events such as terrorist attacks. Catastrophes were considered "low probability–high consequence" events. They were uncertain and
very difficult to predict in terms of timing and extent of damage. For the coming year, the company had estimated that expected losses across all its

Taxes Essay: How To Use Tokyo Taxi
How to use Tokyo Taxi
Japan has vast network of transportation including trains, buses and taxies. The taxies are comparatively expensive here. However, they are the best
choice for convenient travel as trains and buses do not operate in Friday and Saturday nights.
When you travel to shorter routes in a group, taxies are the best choice. They are economical too. Taxies are basically used in those routes where trains
and buses are uncommon.
How can you use Taxi?
First of all, to use a taxi, you need to go to the nearest taxi station or from taxi stands which are located on the opposite side of railways.
It is unquestionably simple and straight forward to utilize a taxi in Japan. For this, you utilize the standard worldwide technique for raising your arm

The Use of Chemical Weapons in the Tokyo Subway Attack Essay
The Use of Chemical Weapons in the Tokyo Subway Attack
Japan has long enjoyed the enviable reputation of being one of the safest nations in the world. The country has one of the world lowest rates for
murder and other violent crime, and the Japanese National Police Agency and local Police forces are often praised as a model of law enforcement
efficiency. Tokyo enjoys one of the cleanest, safest and most efficient subway networks in the world. Trains run on precise schedules and
accommodate 2.7 billion passengers a year. All that changed on March 20, 1995. A nightmare unfolded as the city of Tokyo experienced one of the
worst terrorist attacks of the century. This is what many considered to be the first true case of use of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some commentators began to think that the attack was targeted on NPA officers. Some commentators evidently anticipated that the Tokyo attack was a
prelude to the issuing of demands by the criminal. Commentators also expressed surprise that, given the toxicity of sarin and the nature of the target, the
casualty had not in fact been much higher. Others suggested that the agent may simply have been impure, perhaps deliberately diluted either
self–protection of the attackers or to keep the number of fatalities low. This theory appeared confirmed by the discovery early on the traces of another
substance, acetonitrile (or methyl cyanide), which it could have been used to dilute the gas.
Some Unexplained Incidents: In the days following the subway attack, as the casualty toll continued to rise, the Amu Shinri Kyo (or "Supreme Truth"),
whose leader– Shoko Asahara, had in the past shown an interested in chemical and biological warfare. Two days after the attack, large numbers of
police officers began massive raids on the sects many facilities throughout Japan, on the pretext of searching for kidnap victims (since there was no
immediate evidence linking it to the subway attack). At one location particular, a compound or commune at Kamikuishiki in the surroundings of Mount
Fuji 100 km west of Tokyo, they discovered extensive facilities for the

The Role Of Academic Thinking Surrounding Cities
1.1 Introduction to Global City Theory
Academic thinking surrounding cities prior to the global recession of the early 1980s was somewhat limited in its understanding of international
influences on the attributes and characteristics of said cities. Their analysis was limited by boundaries of national or regional boarders and the
hierarchies that these dictate (Taylor, 2003). The national scale was at this point the principle scale on which cities where categorised and ranked.
Brenner et al state that:
"The possibility that urban development or the formation of urban hierarchies might be conditioned by supranational or global forces was not
systematically explored."
(Brenner and Keil, 2006, p6)
Although this was the common thinking the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However as Friedmann himself states it was never intended to be a definitive piece. In part 1.2 of this paper the key characteristics of a global city will
be identified however for this introduction, global cities theory or as it was known at the time "World City Theory" can be summarised into the
following quote:
"World cities are the control centres of the global economy. Their status, of course, is evolving in the measure that given regions are integrated in a
dominant role with the world system. And like the golden cities of ancient empires, they draw into themselves the wealth of the world that is ruled by
them. They become the major points for the accumulation of capital and "all that money can buy." They are luxurious, splendid cities whose very
splendour obscures the poverty on which their wealth is based. The juxtaposition is not merely spatial; it is a functional relation: rich and poor define
each other."
(Friedmann, et al, 1982, p5)
This creates a narrative of inherent inequality within global cities, that will be explored in the following text. By using this as a starting point to asses
the functioning of cities, this paper will draw upon various international cities to compare and contrast individual effects of globalisation. Primarily
Tokyo will be used as a case study for deeper analysis allowing greater understanding of the real world effects that globalisation is inflicting upon the
composition of highly

Analysis Of Natsume Soseki 's Kokoro
Natsume Soseki's Kokoro illustrates the struggles of a young man (the narrator) who was alienated from his family and his loneliness as he pursues
acceptance and love by building a friendship with an elder. As a parallel to this, the elder (Sensei), sought an end to his social isolation through his
love to a woman whose qualities were not tainted by modernity. K, Sensei's childhood friend, had also hinted his struggles in isolation as he tried to
keep to his idealistic principles. This paper will analyze the isolation and loneliness that was faced by the Japanese people during a period of significant
modernization and how they approached it and attempted to solve the conflict between tradition and modernity.
Meiji Ishin was a time of revolution in 1868 that restored practical imperial order to Japan under Emperor Meiji, thus reconstructing the government.
Many people had high hopes in this new order of government but the older generation was torn between their tradition and modernization. In Kokoro,
Sensei was a character that illustrated loneliness and isolation in his individual struggles with this conflict. In the present, he said that he represented
neither the new or old tradition but rather a representation of a person who was caught in–between the traditional belief and modern belief. Here I
quote, "You see, I am an inconsistent person. This inconsistency may not be so much a natural part of my character as the effect that the remembrance
of my own past has had on

The Meiji Restoration
During the Meiji Restoration, Japan went through many changes as it was exposed to foreign powers such as Europe. One of the political changes
that occurred was that Japan was forced to begin interaction with their foreign peers as they came with their several innovations that were incredibly
advanced compared to what Japan could offer at the time. This not only exposed their in ability to compare to their peers, it also revealed that they
were technologically backwards in the eyes of their peers. As Japan continued to interact with their neighbors, Japan adopted several sayings that
embodied the goals they had in the effort to catch up to and match their foreign peers as well as other changes in the effort of forming a new society
that can match their peers. When Japan became open to the world powers like Europe, Japan went through a transformation that modernized Japan and
inherently changed their society to reflect something similar to those in European countries. In Japan, their first reaction to being forced out into the
open interaction with powers like Europe was to immediately develop ways to match their power. One of their reactions included adopting sayings that
stated goals for Japan that would benefit its power. Another response was to authorize new official documents that affected Japan as a whole. A large
change that occurred was the shift in government, shifting from feudalism to an empire with a single emperor. These changes were factors that in time

Tokyo Rose: Iva Ikoku Toguri Essays
Born on July 4, 1916, in Los Angeles, California, to the parents of Jun and Fumi Toguri, Iva Ikoku Toguri was an American citizen with Japanese
heritage (Lerner 163; Tokyo1). Toguri and her three siblings were raised in a predominantly white neighborhood in Compton, California, where their
father disapproved of them learning the Japanese language so they could better fit into American society. Toguri eventually went on to attend
Compton Junior College after finishing high school and then transferred to University of California, Los Angeles where she graduated in 1941 with a
zoology degree (Iva 1; Tokyo 1). Soon after college, Toguri left America to tend to an extremely ill aunt in Japan on July 5, 1941. Unfortunately, she

While working there, Toguri befriended Felipe D'Aquino, a colleague and Portuguese national, and Major Charles Cousens, a former Australian
radio host who was now forced to broadcast on the propagandist radio show "Zero Hour" (Tokyo 2). Radio Tokyo wanted a female's voice for this
show and since Toguri spoke English, she was the perfect match (Lerner 163). In November 1943, she joined the radio program under the name
"Orphan Ann" playing songs and speaking to the soldiers for twenty minutes out of each day (Tokyo 2). In 1945, Toguri married D'Aquino and, later
that year, the war finally ended (Iva 1; Tokyo 2).
During the course of the war, Radio Tokyo employed over twenty women to broadcast programs to the foreign troops (Lerner 163; Iva 1). A myth
began to be dispersed and soon the women were all called "Tokyo Rose" as a whole (Tokyo 3). The reporters of that time were obsessed with finding
the biggest story, locating and interviewing the notorious "Tokyo Rose" (Lerner 163). To accomplish their goal, they rewarded anyone who could
supply information on the whereabouts of her. A Radio Tokyo employee, Kenkichi Oki, labeled Toguri as "Tokyo Rose" (Iva 1; Lerner 164). As a
result, the reporters pursued Toguri and paid her two thousand dollars for her admission to being "Tokyo Rose" and for a private interview (Tokyo 3).

Japanese culture factors influenced the disclosure of financial information
Introduction
Japan is an unique oriental country in many aspects, especially in politics and economy, both western practices and traditional nationalism are
coexisted in this country. The period 1890–1940 was just followed the Meiji restoration, and was typical in the history of Japan, at that time, Japan was
on the way from a feudal country to a capitalistic country, called modernization. Many western practices were being more and more adopted, however,
at the same time, traditional rules still had strong influences in Japan. Under this background, this report will discuss the Japanese cultural factors
during 1890–1940 that influenced the disclosure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hand in hand, the zaibatsu and government guided the nation, borrowing technology from the West. Japan gradually took control of much of Asia's
market for manufactured goods, beginning with textiles. The economy structure became very mercantilist, importing raw materials and exporting
finished products – a reflection of Japan's relative poverty in raw materials.[2]
Japan emerged from the Tokugawa–Meiji transition as the first Asian industrialized nation. Domestic commercial activities and limited foreign trade
had met the demands for material culture in the Tokugawa period, but the modernized Meiji era had radically different requirements. From the
beginning, the Meiji rulers embraced the concept of a market economy and adopted British and North American forms of free enterprise capitalism. The
private sector – in a nation blessed with an abundance of aggressive entrepreneurs – welcomed such change.
Economic reforms included a unified modern currency based on the yen, banking, commercial and tax laws, stock exchanges, and a communications
network. Establishment of a modern institutional framework conducive to an advanced capitalist economy took time but was completed by the 1890s.
By this time, the government had largely relinquished direct control of the modernization process, primarily for budgetary reasons. Many of the former
daimyo, whose pensions had been paid in a lump sum, benefited greatly

The Main Causes Of The Meiji Restoration In Japan
The main causes of the Meiji Restoration
Meiji Restoration was a significant historical event not only in Japanese history but also in world history. A study (Hunt, Lynn, Thomas, & Barbara,
2009) concluded that the word "Meiji" means "enlightened rule" and the goal was to combine "modern advances" with "eastern" values. This event
restored practical imperial rule to Japan under Emperor Meiji in 1868 ("Meiji Restoration", 2017). As a result, it led to the tremendous changes in
political and social structure of Japan, and spanned both the Late Tokugawa period and the beginning of the Meiji period ("Meiji Restoration", 2017).
The main causes of Meiji Restoration can be analyzed from the following different aspects.
1) Ecological crisis
Japan was divided into 240 han which were governed by its own daimyo. After 1720, although some places prospered and others declined which
depended on local circumstances, a whole Japan began to experience ecological crisis. To be specific, the number of Japanese population doubled
from 15 million to 30 million. In general, the increase in population put pressure on the environment and made it easier for people to suffer from
natural disasters such as famines and typhoons. These led to ecological crisis which helped destabilize Tokugawa rule and brought about further reform.
2) Foreign relation crisis and political crisis
In the world history, European countries became stronger due to two events in the 1630s. Firstly, some European countries

Iva Toguri Aquino In The Hunt For The Tokyo Rose
A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency: this is the definition of scapegoat. It
is also how one might describe the role of Iva Toguri Aquino in the hunt for the Tokyo Rose. Betrayed by not one but two countries she called home,
Iva Toguri Aquino was the seventh person in the history of theUnited States to be tried and convicted of treason. D'Aquino v. United States is the
case involving a young American born and raised woman of Japanese heritage, who was taken advantage of by the U.S. and Japanese government
and a mythical siren blamed for the discouragement of U.S. Troops during World War II. Iva Toguri was born on July 4th, 1916 in Los Angeles,
California. She left the U.S.A. for Japan to further her study in medicine and take care of her ill aunt not long after graduating from UCLA. Once
healthy, Iva Toguri's aunt turned her out on her own, claiming it was too expensive to feed her. Forced to find a job rather quickly, she picked up a
job as a local radio station broadcaster. While working that job, Toguri married a Portuguese citizen, Felipe D'Aquino and denied many offers by
family and friends to become a Japanese or Portuguese citizen. However, when she attempted to return to America, she was told there was no proof
of her citizenship and was required to stay in Japan. Shortly after, Toguri was "hand picked" by the executive producer of "Zero Hour", a radio station
produced by the Japanese government, to cover a segment broadcasted to the American Troops and their allies. Iva Toguri broadcasted under the name
of Orphan Ann or Orphan Annie––but was swindled into signing a contract labeling her as the Tokyo Rose some time post war when interviewed by
journalists. Post war, it was realized that "Zero Hour" was one of the Japanese's many forms of psychological warfare. This epiphany started a hunt
for the mythical siren, the Tokyo Rose. Many "American speaking" women were recruited by Broadcasting Corporation of Japan( production
company that worked hand in hand with the Japanese government) to cover various demoralizing segments of Zero Hour and say things like "'Joe

The Human Struggle In Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story
Generations don't battle, they mostly clash into each other. We see this in our very own lives, where parents bring up their past and say, "If only you
knew how good you have it!". This will forever be somewhat a problem in the past, present, and future of our lives. One generation will always be
underestimated or beyond correct then the other. In Yasujiro Ozu's film Tokyo Story we see constant clashing of the elderly and theyouth. Ozu's
message of how the generations have changed is a way of him defining to us what the human struggle is. Due to the character's actions in the way
they treat each other we can pick up on the struggles that they are having and see the human struggle in the film. At the start of the film, Ozu
shows us two of the main characters of the film; Shukichi and Tomi. We see them packing their bags to go on a trip. They are going to see their
children whom, they haven't seen in a long while. We can see that Ozu is showing us that becoming old is one struggle that most humans fear, but
of course it must occur in our lives. When the old slow couple are packing, Shukichi asks Tomi where the inflatable pillow is and Tomi responds
and says that she gave it to him. With aging comes forgetfulness and stubbornness; and when Tomi says she gave it to him he starts to say no you
didn't, you still have it. Later we see it appear in his bag where he said it wasn't and nothing is said when he finds it. It is simply brushed away with no
argument to follow. Ozu shows

Japanese Imperialism
Imperialism is the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and
dependencies. (macquarie, 2017)Japan incurred incredible changes to many aspect of its society following the use of imperialistic forces used to open
its borders by the Americas in 1868 this is commonly known as the Meiji restoration or Meiji period. The Americas changed many things but the most
provenant was the Japanese government, Its Military and the Education systems/ schools.
A great deal of traditional systems where changed during the Meiji restoration but the most important was the Education and schools. The Tokugawa
education cons tied of several main types of schools such as the hank, terakoya, shoheiko and shijku. The hank mainly Educated the upper class society
about Confucianism. Terakoya were independent schools manly for lower class town people (not for samurai). These schools where based in Buddhist
temples. The okwagana period also had an official schools of the shogun ate called– shoheiko, located in edo (Tokyo). The children of the nation's
leaders attended this cool and were educated by confusion scholars. All of this changed from 1868 japan underwent a very sudden change to it

Translation Essentials: The Importance of Japanese Translation
When many people think about Japan they reflect upon its great history. Stories of Samurai warriors, silk kimonos, and sushi. Others think about a
nuclear nation that features one of the world 's most cutting–edge technology industries. Whatever your view on Japan, if you are thinking about doing
business there, you need to have top–notch translation, since recent tests place Japan at the bottom of all Asian countries when it comes to English
language fluency. The test did not show how well the Japanese spoke Hindi or Portuguese, but you can imagine it would not be any better since
English is the second most spoken language in the world behind Mandarin.
Let 's take a look at six reasons you should consider having your information translated into Japanese.
1. The summer Olympics of 2020 will take place in Tokyo and it is supposed to be mind blowing. Not only do the Olympics bring in wealthy
consumers from all over the world, but they bring out the big spenders from the host country as well. If you want your product to be seen on the world
stage, you definitely want it to be available in Tokyo during the summer of 2020. This means getting things ready today, after all, translation takes time.
Even without the Olympics, Japan is a major economic force. Nearly 4 million people pass through the Shinjuku station, the world 's busiest train
station, every day. They also have the busiest urban transport system in

Deforestation In Japanese Essay
Japan as a whole is a disaster–prone country, mostly due to its position on the Pacific Rim fault line, but also because of climatic and seismic factors.
However, for the purpose of this assignment I will be focusing specifically on the region of Tokyo–Yokohama. Yokohama is a city of 3.7 million
located on the western coast of Tokyo Bay, roughly 17 miles south of Tokyo. Yokohama is the second largest city in Japan, beaten out only by Tokyo.
The combined population of Tokyo and Yokohama Metropolitan Area is 16,889,000– so roughly 17,000,000 people are living in 1,013 square miles,
making for extremely densely populated conditions. (These households and population data are based on the results of the Population Census 2010.)

Tokyo is on the ocean side of the island, making the city incredibly susceptible. Typhoons can cause flooding and landslides, which can be extremely
dangerous to people and cause destruction such as collapsed buildings and fallen trees. The volcanoes belong to the Pacific Ring of Fire, caused by
subduction zones of the Pacific plate beneath continental and other oceanic plates along its margins. Japan lies in a zone of extreme crustal instability.
Mount Fuji poses the biggest threat the Tokyo. Located only 60 miles from Tokyo, this stratovolcano is very much active and could cause mass
hysteria for many people when it next erupts. A volcanic eruption can pour ash and lava all over the city. Over the years, Japan has taken lots of steps
to lighten the damage future earthquakes could inflict. Scientists are studying ways to predict the occurrence of quakes more accurately. Authorities
have put strict laws on the construction buildings so they are more resistant to quakes. Many local governments have adopted an earthquake–prevention
plan that outlines the steps that should be taken in case a major earthquake strikes, including the regulation of traffic, closing of banks and department
stores, and evacuation of residents. The Tokyo metropolitan government conducts periodic checks on the safety of buildings in designated "danger
zones." At schools and workplaces, evacuation drills are held several times a year.

Japan And Japanese Culture
Japan is an East Asian Island country with a specific cultural identity.
Japanese influence spread not by militarist might, but through economic integration with much of the
international community in the latter half of the 20th century (Encyclopedia Britannica Online, "Japan," 2011).
East of the Asian mainland, Japan is a country of mountainous volcanic islands and intermittent valleys situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Japan has
four main islands, the biggest is Honshu, which accounts for 60% of the country's total land area and 80% of the total population. Some of the other
major islands of Japan include Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. The Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, lie south of the main islands. With a land
are totaling 377,835 sq km (145,902 sq mi), Japan is a fraction smaller than the state of California. Japan's closest

Impact Of Globalization On The Changing Process Of...
Introduction
Although the organisational aspects and spatial aspects must also be looked at, the flows of globalisation including economic, environmental, political
and cultural change must be looked at in terms of reconstructing places and specific communities (Knox and Marston, 2016). Global networks allow
the flows of globalisation to be reconstructed rather than effaced. I will focus on the economic impact of globalisation on the changing process of
economic character and development in London and Sydney.
Economic globalisation has been defined by (Cloke, Crang and Goodwin, 2013 p.414)," As the growing integration and interconnectedness of a range

A large portion of the establishments of todays apparently new "global" wonders go back in any event to the time of imperialism, at times prior.
Besides, numerous "global" issues are exceedingly perplexing and show incredible spatial fluctuation, in this manner significance there are no simple

Globalisation of the capitalist world has vastly increased since World War Two with the growing innovation of technology and communication, this has
created a " broadening global connectivity"(Knox and Marston, 2016 pg 86). Which with theses new innovations brings a quicker and more compelling
method for transportation and correspondence in places like London, helping to increase economic global connectivity.
Globalisation has created a number of serious issues concerning "environmental ,health, core–periphery disparity and security issues" (Knox and
Marston, 2016 pg. 88).These issues are reflected in London urban development as this place has been resisted and subverted by the structures of
globalisation in terms of economic issues.
The capitalist and colonial flows of globalisation have allowed but the creation of world cities like London, New York,Paris and Tokyo. These cities
London in particular are dominant economic and urban centres through business,

How Did Kotoku Change
Kotoku was born in 1871 in rural Tosa and matured in the hectic reform years of the Meiji period. During his maturity, Japan was undergoing
changes that lead to impending dangers. The years of the Meiji Restoration in 1868 changed from feudal system of the Edo period to a compulsory
system of equal education and enlistment to the army. Japan underwent intense reforms that changed its social, political, and economic aspects. The
reforms shook the foundations of the dying regime and gave birth to a new society. The social Caste system was toppled, and the day to day lives
of the Japanese changed with a revolution. This achievement was shortly thereafter betrayed by the ruling party. The ruling elite's imperialistic
pursuit was viewed as a betrayal to the Meiji Restoration. The revolution promised a fair society in submission of universal ideals. While in Tosa,
Kotoku was educated in the new educational system and its new political ideals, which had opened up due to radical Meiji reforms. He was known as
a socialist and anarchist because of his distaste towards the political leaders as he felt betrayed by the promise of the Meiji restoration. The revolution
became a restoration of the past and reinstated the emperor as the one true ruler. Kotoku believed in completing the revolution that had... Show more

Kunio Maekawa is an architect who designed and built his own house, The Maekawa House, in 1941(Reynolds, 2001). Since the war was going on,
he was only able to construct his home with limited materials (Reynolds, 2001). Nevertheless, he was still able to incorporate the traditional Japanese
architecture with influences of the western style. The Maekawa House is considered to be modern because of the introduction it had of a different
type of design in Japan (Reynolds, 2001). Maekawa obtained the traditional wood construction and spacious garden; he added the living/dining room

He was drawn by the English Arts and Crafts Movement and chose to write about John Ruskin's essay, "Seven Lamps ofArchitecture." Maekawa was
intrigued by how Ruskin defined the architectural detail of architects' work. This made him more interested to find out what architecture was
(Maekawa, 1984). He visited projects around Tokyo, and even got the chance to see Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel but was disappointed by the
lack of information (Maekawa, 1984). He read an architectural journal, Architectural Forum, and was not fascinated because there was no information
of the design or the aesthetics. It seems magazines in the 1920's were somewhat conservative (Maekawa, 1984).
Maekawa entered Tokyo Imperial University in 1925 to pursue his architecture education and it was there when he was able to be exposed to the
European trends (Maekawa, 1984). He learned about the Western and Japanese architectural history and took field trips to shrines and temples

Linguistics and Dialects in Japanese Essays
In a language, there are usually variants that emerge from it–variants such as dialects or different colloquial phrases. This usually happens when the
language is split across different parts of the country or world. Different living situations call for different phrases or different ways of expressing that
idea. In Japanese, these different dialects are known as hougen. There are several different Japanese hougen comprising that of the Tokyo area, the
Tohoku region, the Kansai region, and even the Kyushu area to name a few places. Also within each certain areas, there may also be variants of each
hougen with similar or minor changes such as in Kansai, there's difference between Osaka and Kyoto for example. In general, the dialects ... Show more

Two of the most common features of Tohoku dialect are drawing out vowels sounds which make them sound longer. They also change consonant
sounds. For example, the "k" sound becomes a "g" sound. And sometimes Tohoku speakers add an extra sound before the start of some words like
inserting an "n" before "g" to make it "ng." These features lead Tokyo people to generally consider it a lazy, country way of speaking. The accent also
carries the stereotype of laziness or clumsiness, as Tohoku speakers are known for slurring and not opening their mouths very much. The rather
negative nickname for the dialect is zuuzuu–ben, "zuuzuu" being the sound that a Kanto speaker hears when a Tohoku speaker neutralizes and drags
their vowels. Because of the negative stereotypes, when speaking with Tokyo speakers, Tohoku speakers tend to hide their accents and speak in Tokyo
dialect. The accent only shows up when talking to family or when stressed.
Western Japan Kansai, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukui (Phrases, changes from standard, ) Kansai includes Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and surrounding areas. To
speakers of standard Japanese, Osaka sounds either charming and funny, or grating and obnoxious. There's a sort of Tokyo–Osaka rivalry and both
areas have great pride in their way of speaking.
Kansai people generally change the way they talk when they move to Tokyo, except for times when they want to be charming or show their Kansai
pride. This is the dialect spoken by comedians (many of whom are

Harvesting fuelwood in the coppice forest already stopped in 1960's. Coppice forest is mainly composed of some kinds of oaks, and is regenerated with fresh shoots from the stumps of trees after harvesting fuelwood is done. Besides challenging the previously–unquestioned 'naturalness' of gender roles in society, feminist criticism is also concerned with female experiences of oppression, and seeks to expose "how aspects of our culture are inherently patriarchal" (Purdue University, 2010). In addition, feminist criticism raises the question of whether or not an inherently female language exists, and aims to change the traditional literary canon that previously marginalized women writers. Oseki's identity is defined by her social roles in relation to male figures, in line with the Confucian concept of 'Three Obediences' – a daughter to her father, wife to her husband, and mother to her son. Winston argues that "she exists in an inchoate body, for she is neither her own person nor a corpse"; her true 'self' exists acceptably only within the cracks of her fragmented identity, and she struggles to suppress her desire for agency (Winston, 2004, p.10). Her attempt to give up her roles as wife and mother – an attempt to reject the roles dictated by the patriarchy – for example, is deemed as "selfishness" despite her husband's abuse (Winston, 2004, p.2). Moreover, Oseki's lack of consent to her marriage to Isamu, in addition to the fact that her attempt to seek divorce cannot be done without the consent and support of her father, are both clear evidences of how she is commodified within the patriarchal institutions of family and marriage. When she asserts at the end of Part I that "after tonight I'll think of myself as completely belonging to Isamu", she emphasizes her own position as little more than a property and object of exchange between male authoritative ... World cities have become the central connecting point for the multiplicity of linkages and interconnections that sustain the contemporary world economy, and its social and political systems. According to the 2004 GaWC studies world cities can be ranked based on their provision of 'advanced producer services' such as accountancy, advertising, finance and law. Hence, world cities influence the flow of both finance and investment throughout the world thus resulting in economic authority. World cities are markets for a vast range of goods and services as they are areas of massive accumulations of wealth and have extraordinary purchasing power. The importance of these cities as markets is shown by patterns of concentrated retailing in high–order consumer goods, such as clothing, jewellery, and art. Streets such as Fifth Avenue in New York are famous for their retailing of very expensive goods. Cultural Authority World cities are centres for a range of cultural facilities and world entertainment. They have theatres, opera houses, large entertainment. They host major cultural and sporting events ranging from art exhibitions to tennis tournaments. The 2008 Beijing Olympics and Fifa's world cup in Munich both were viewed by over a billion people worldwide. New York for example has a very strong cultural authority with the New York Times reporting that in 2010 48.7 million people visited New York spending $31 billion, which is almost 7% increase when compared to the 45 million in 2009. Japan put in place a policy of national seclusion for hundreds of years until the 1850s, but it succumbed to an imperialist power by the end of the 19th century. The culture of Japan was spread internationally through occupation in military campaigns before World War II. Japan then reinvented itself after the war and began to flourish economically. Japanese influence spread not by militarist might, but through economic integration with much of the international community in the last part of the 20th century (Encyclopedia Britannica Online, "Japan," 2011). East of the Asian mainland, Japan is a country of mountainous volcanic islands and intermittent valleys situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Japan has four main islands, the biggest is Honshu, which contributes to sixty percent of the nations total land area and eighty percent of the entire population. Some of the other major islands of Japan include Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Lying south of the main islands are the Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa. With a land area totaling 377,835 sq km (145,902 sq mi), Japan is a fraction smaller than California. Neighboring ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Movie Analysis of Tokyo Drift: Fast and Furious I agree with people who say movies aren't based on real life experience, but I am pretty sure producers have specific messages to tell their audience. Movies might be long and time taking, but when there is free time to spend why not lay back and watch a good movie? Today I will be reviewing one of my favorite movies of all time, Tokyo Drift. Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift, is one the great movies of Fast and Furious series. Fast and Furious movies have a lot of fans throughout the world and the great thing about this series is that they are all relatable and continue the story that began in the year 2001. But there is something different about Tokyo Drift that keeps it unalike with other Fast And Furious movies. This is why I will be doing a review on it. Tokyo Drift is made up of 2 words which are Tokyo and drift. Of course many people know where Tokyo is located, but not a lot of people know what the word drift means in driving vocabulary. Drifting is one the popular methods racers use to dodge, show off or enjoy while driving. There is something about drifting that every time it happens somewhere, it excites the people that know what it is. Seeing your tires burn and smoke while drifting, it gives you good vibes. In many arcades I've seen little kids drift on the car stimulators and smile because they accomplished that skill. Of course it is not a good thing to race and drift in real life it is actually illegal, but there are people who do it knowing all the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Essay On Sushi The first thing to realize is that Sushi doesn't mean raw fish it actually refers to a dish of vinegared rice served with various fillings and toppings. Sushi was originally invented as a means of preservation when fermented rice was used to store fish for anything up to a year. This was known as narezushi, and in fact the rice was thrown away and only the fish consumed. A later variant called Nama nare zushi, invented in the 16th Century, introduced the idea of using vinegared rice, which was consumed instead of being thrown, away and is still enjoyed today particularly in Japan's ancient Capital Kyoto. Sushi is said to have originated in China between the 5th and 3rd centuries BC as a means of preserving fish and salt. Narezushi, the original form of sushi has been made in Southeast Asia for centuries and nowadays there are still traces of it in some parts. Narezushi appeared in Japan in the 8th century and still survives today in the form of food such as carp sushi. Through urbanisation, technology is a huge advancement for cities. The main technology advancement is transportation. I have chosen to compare Tokyo with Auckland. I will discuss Tokyo and Auckland's development (1880–1930), outlining pressures and opportunities created by technology advancements and how Tokyo is caused by urbanisation, comparing with Auckland. Tokyo's population is approximately 13.35million with rapid urban growth. The land area of Tokyo is approximately 2,187km2. Tokyo was first established in 1869. Tokyo was originally named Edo (small fishing village) in early 1800's. Tokyo was a part of the Musashi Province development. The early–18th century, there were not much transportation in Edo, including planes, trains and cars. The main transport mode was walking, boats or horseback. Any cargo transported by people, oxen/horses, were by large carts or traditional boats. The Edo period (1603–1868), Edo did not have carriages drawn by horses compared to horse–back carriages in Auckland. The main cause of cargo were by boats. Other transport were palanquins (equivalence to taxicabs). Palanquins were used in the city to transport people. Road networks were then a main pressure for Tokyo as to transport freight to long distances between cities. The Tokugawa government started to develop road infrastructure, by connecting highways between Edo and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Symbolism Of Modernization In Kokoro Modernization Symbolized in Kokoro By James Schradle for IAH 204 In this modern era the gulf between modernized nations and nations who are not grows constantly, and if a country hopes to bridge the growing gap they must advance quickly. As with any other growth, growing pains are routine. Among others is the pain of the existence of generations whose world is changed completely over the course of a lifetime. In few places is this effect starker than in Japan's modern history, a country whose traditional ideals had to find a way to adapt modern westernized ideals to a historically traditional nation in a small amount of time. This era, the Meiji Restoration, put Japan through their growing pains and pushed the country to compete on the global level. Natsume Soseki offers a character whose relationships in the novel "Kokoro" are analogous to the progression and end of this Meiji era and how it effected the individual and their perceptions of change. Sensei is a character whose life and relationships offer a full range of understanding of the difficulties caused by the changing times. Though it is not apparent exactly when he was born, it's clear that it was between the dawn modern and the end of pre–modern Japan. This era was exceedingly traditional, a time in Japan's history when cities were not tall and gray with streetcars stretching through them. A time when traditional social patterns prevailed and Confucian values still lingered. This can be seen in a quote ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It first started in Britain, because of Britain's flourishing economy and vast expendable resources. These technological advances included new weapons and new means of transportation. However, the technological advances were not always beneficial. One problem was too many resources were being used too quickly. As a way to combat this problem, Western countries decided to trade with Eastern countries. One of these countries they wanted to trade was Japan. Japan still not modernized at this moment, had to agree to all their demands, signing treaties which allowed for relations and trade with them. This had also showed how their current Shogun, Tokugawa and Japan were weak, and so the Japan decided they needed a change in government, and wanted a new government. Samurai leaders wanted change, and so in 1867, the Tokugawa Shogun gave up his position the ruler Emperor Mutsuhito took over. Mutsuhito, better known asEmperor Meiji, and taking control of the government, decided he needed to modernize his country. These days, few would have predicted that Japan's way to renewal would be blazed by its young people, who were supposed to have other things on their minds: nearly 1 in 10 young Japanese is unemployed, and almost one–third of university graduates get no job offers. Many more can find only part–time work. Yet even if the new mood of sleeves–rolled–up volunteerism persists among young Japanese, they may still need leadership: someone to organise where the supplies and relief efforts should go. But in today's Japan – a nation of lacklustre politicians, bureaucrats and salarymen – that seems to be lacking. Their status, of course, is evolving in the measure that given regions are integrated in a dominant role with the world system. And like the golden cities of ancient empires, they draw into themselves the wealth of the world that is ruled by them. They become the major points for the accumulation of capital and "all that money can buy." They are luxurious, splendid cities whose very splendour obscures the poverty on which their wealth is based. The juxtaposition is not merely spatial; it is a functional relation: rich and poor define each other." As a parallel to this, the elder (Sensei), sought an end to his social isolation through his love to a woman whose qualities were not tainted by modernity. K, Sensei's childhood friend, had also hinted his struggles in isolation as he tried to keep to his idealistic principles. Meiji Ishin was a time of revolution in 1868 that restored practical imperial order to Japan under Emperor Meiji, thus reconstructing the government. Many people had high hopes in this new order of government but the older generation was torn between their tradition and modernization. In Kokoro, Sensei was a character that illustrated loneliness and isolation in his individual struggles with this conflict. In the present, he said that he represented neither the new or old tradition but rather a representation of a person who was caught in–between the traditional belief and modern belief. When Japan became open to the world powers like Europe, Japan went through a transformation that modernized Japan and inherently changed their society to reflect something similar to those in European countries. In Japan, their first reaction to being forced out into the open interaction with powers like Europe was to immediately develop ways to match their power. Domestic commercial activities and limited foreign trade had met the demands for material culture in the Tokugawa period, but the modernized Meiji era had radically different requirements. • 32. The Main Causes Of The Meiji Restoration In Japan The main causes of the Meiji Restoration Meiji Restoration was a significant historical event not only in Japanese history but also in world history. A study (Hunt, Lynn, Thomas, & Barbara, 2009) concluded that the word "Meiji" means "enlightened rule" and the goal was to combine "modern advances" with "eastern" values. This event restored practical imperial rule to Japan under Emperor Meiji in 1868 ("Meiji Restoration", 2017). As a result, it led to the tremendous changes in political and social structure of Japan, and spanned both the Late Tokugawa period and the beginning of the Meiji period ("Meiji Restoration", 2017). The main causes of Meiji Restoration can be analyzed from the following different aspects. 1) Ecological crisis Japan was divided into 240 han which were governed by its own daimyo. After 1720, although some places prospered and others declined which depended on local circumstances, a whole Japan began to experience ecological crisis. To be specific, the number of Japanese population doubled from 15 million to 30 million. In general, the increase in population put pressure on the environment and made it easier for people to suffer from natural disasters such as famines and typhoons. These led to ecological crisis which helped destabilize Tokugawa rule and brought about further reform. 2) Foreign relation crisis and political crisis In the world history, European countries became stronger due to two events in the 1630s. • 33. Iva Toguri Aquino In The Hunt For The Tokyo Rose A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency: this is the definition of scapegoat. It is also how one might describe the role of Iva Toguri Aquino in the hunt for the Tokyo Rose. Betrayed by not one but two countries she called home, Iva Toguri Aquino was the seventh person in the history of theUnited States to be tried and convicted of treason. D'Aquino v. United States is the case involving a young American born and raised woman of Japanese heritage, who was taken advantage of by the U.S. and Japanese government and a mythical siren blamed for the discouragement of U.S. Troops during World War II. Iva Toguri was born on July 4th, 1916 in Los Angeles, California. She left the U.S.A. for Japan to further her study in medicine and take care of her ill aunt not long after graduating from UCLA. Once healthy, Iva Toguri's aunt turned her out on her own, claiming it was too expensive to feed her. Forced to find a job rather quickly, she picked up a job as a local radio station broadcaster. While working that job, Toguri married a Portuguese citizen, Felipe D'Aquino and denied many offers by family and friends to become a Japanese or Portuguese citizen. However, when she attempted to return to America, she was told there was no proof of her citizenship and was required to stay in Japan. Shortly after, Toguri was "hand picked" by the executive producer of "Zero Hour", a radio station produced by the Japanese government, to cover a segment broadcasted to the American Troops and their allies. Iva Toguri broadcasted under the name of Orphan Ann or Orphan Annie––but was swindled into signing a contract labeling her as the Tokyo Rose some time post war when interviewed by journalists. Post war, it was realized that "Zero Hour" was one of the Japanese's many forms of psychological warfare. This epiphany started a hunt for the mythical siren, the Tokyo Rose. Many "American speaking" women were recruited by Broadcasting Corporation of Japan( production company that worked hand in hand with the Japanese government) to cover various demoralizing segments of Zero Hour and say things like "'Joe Brown was out with Sally Smith. • 34. The Human Struggle In Yasujiro Ozu's Tokyo Story Generations don't battle, they mostly clash into each other. We see this in our very own lives, where parents bring up their past and say, "If only you knew how good you have it!". This will forever be somewhat a problem in the past, present, and future of our lives. One generation will always be underestimated or beyond correct then the other. In Yasujiro Ozu's film Tokyo Story we see constant clashing of the elderly and theyouth. Ozu's message of how the generations have changed is a way of him defining to us what the human struggle is. Due to the character's actions in the way they treat each other we can pick up on the struggles that they are having and see the human struggle in the film. At the start of the film, Ozu shows us two of the main characters of the film; Shukichi and Tomi. We see them packing their bags to go on a trip. They are going to see their children whom, they haven't seen in a long while. We can see that Ozu is showing us that becoming old is one struggle that most humans fear, but of course it must occur in our lives. When the old slow couple are packing, Shukichi asks Tomi where the inflatable pillow is and Tomi responds and says that she gave it to him. With aging comes forgetfulness and stubbornness; and when Tomi says she gave it to him he starts to say no you didn't, you still have it. Later we see it appear in his bag where he said it wasn't and nothing is said when he finds it. It is simply brushed away with no argument to follow. Ozu shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Japan And Japanese Culture Japan is an East Asian Island country with a specific cultural identity. Samurai values, kimono clothing, Noh Theater, woodblock art, and sumo wrestling are among the many instantly identifiable aspects of Japan's culture. Many of Japan's cultures have developed through centuries of feudal rule and has benefited from the country's geographic isolation. Japanese influence spread not by militarist might, but through economic integration with much of the international community in the latter half of the 20th century (Encyclopedia Britannica Online, "Japan," 2011). East of the Asian mainland, Japan is a country of mountainous volcanic islands and intermittent valleys situated in the western Pacific Ocean. Japan has four main islands, the biggest is Honshu, which accounts for 60% of the country's total land area and 80% of the total population. Some of the other major islands of Japan include Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. The Ryukyu Islands, including Okinawa, lie south of the main islands. • 43. How Did Kotoku Change Kotoku was born in 1871 in rural Tosa and matured in the hectic reform years of the Meiji period. During his maturity, Japan was undergoing changes that lead to impending dangers. The years of the Meiji Restoration in 1868 changed from feudal system of the Edo period to a compulsory system of equal education and enlistment to the army. Japan underwent intense reforms that changed its social, political, and economic aspects. The reforms shook the foundations of the dying regime and gave birth to a new society. The social Caste system was toppled, and the day to day lives of the Japanese changed with a revolution. This achievement was shortly thereafter betrayed by the ruling party. The ruling elite's imperialistic pursuit was viewed as a betrayal to the Meiji Restoration. The revolution promised a fair society in submission of universal ideals. While in Tosa, Kotoku was educated in the new educational system and its new political ideals, which had opened up due to radical Meiji reforms. He was known as a socialist and anarchist because of his distaste towards the political leaders as he felt betrayed by the promise of the Meiji restoration. He was drawn by the English Arts and Crafts Movement and chose to write about John Ruskin's essay, "Seven Lamps ofArchitecture." Maekawa was intrigued by how Ruskin defined the architectural detail of architects' work. This made him more interested to find out what architecture was (Maekawa, 1984). He visited projects around Tokyo, and even got the chance to see Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel but was disappointed by the lack of information (Maekawa, 1984). He read an architectural journal, Architectural Forum, and was not fascinated because there was no information of the design or the aesthetics. It seems magazines in the 1920's were somewhat conservative (Maekawa, 1984). Maekawa entered Tokyo Imperial University in 1925 to pursue his architecture education and it was there when he was able to be exposed to the European trends (Maekawa, 1984). He learned about the Western and Japanese architectural history and took field trips to shrines and temples (Maekawa, 1984). He graduated from Tokyo Imperial University in 1928 (Maekawa, 1984). This usually happens when the language is split across different parts of the country or world. Different living situations call for different phrases or different ways of expressing that idea. In Japanese, these different dialects are known as hougen. There are several different Japanese hougen comprising that of the Tokyo area, the Tohoku region, the Kansai region, and even the Kyushu area to name a few places. They also change consonant sounds. For example, the "k" sound becomes a "g" sound. And sometimes Tohoku speakers add an extra sound before the start of some words like inserting an "n" before "g" to make it "ng." These features lead Tokyo people to generally consider it a lazy, country way of speaking. The accent also carries the stereotype of laziness or clumsiness, as Tohoku speakers are known for slurring and not opening their mouths very much. The rather negative nickname for the dialect is zuuzuu–ben, "zuuzuu" being the sound that a Kanto speaker hears when a Tohoku speaker neutralizes and drags their vowels. Because of the negative stereotypes, when speaking with Tokyo speakers, Tohoku speakers tend to hide their accents and speak in Tokyo dialect.
