Women in Business
Women Entrepreneurs in Business
While women still face an uphill battle when it comes to breaking the corporate glass ceiling, many women are finding success these days as
entrepreneurs, building their own businesses without those ceilings to hold them down. The growth rate of women–owned businesses has climbed
steadily, even as they continue to face challenges with getting the financing and other assistance they need to succeed. However, there's no doubt that
women entrepreneurs are, as a group, innovative and highly successful.
"Look at women in business today, and you see a distinct new generation of Entrepreneurs. They are experienced, educated and have an appetite for
growth." – Julie Weeks, Director of Research, Center for Women's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Effects Of Donald Trump's Bashed On Women
Donald Trump has bashed on women for not being as intelligent as men, and has glorified the looks of women who are beautiful, but Trump also
bashes on the women who are not fit to his beauty standards. Donald Trump told an interviewer that, "A person who is very flat–chested is very hard
to be a 10" (Trump, 2001). By saying that a person with a flat chest cannot look like the perfect ten, he is saying that women have to have large breasts
to be beautiful. This claim of a beauty norm can cause many self– confidence issues in women.
Donald Trump also told an interviewer, "Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president? I mean,
she's a woman, and I'm not supposed to say bad things, but really,

True Equality for Women at the Workplace
People are judged by their gender, which often, in many situations, lead to bias decisions and unfairness within business organizations for women.
Women are often not held up to the standard of a man in the business workforce, which leaves them with fewer position choices outside the norm. Most
jobs that women have are not demanding upon the body and require little to no strength. The failure to understand adaptation by the government has
caused many reforms in the past, but there are still many flaws in the hiring system that often leave women asking questions and puzzled by the bias
decisions of men in charge of the management of positions. The fight for equality amongst women has been going on for many years. Although women

Throughout the interview she often became emotional and voiced her opinion on the situations that she had experienced and the experiences of the
women in her family. Latrice retold stories of situations where her mother was turned down numerous of times because of the simple fact that she was a
woman. The amount of pain caused to the family was present through her answers and descriptions of the issues. It further exemplifies the harm
caused by people that have a poor mind setting toward business women and the ideal of a women being in charge of government situations. A
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical senior by the name of Taylor was asked her point of view and what preparatory actions that she had
took to prepare to step out into the business work force upon her graduation from college and she stated, " I already know that its going to be very
hard to get the job that I want because the company is worked and managed by a majority of males." When asked why she felt this way she stated,
"Things have not changed from years ago, we still have to fight for every job that we attempt to get even more so then men. Many of my teachers

know that women were not completely equal with men (Swenson)." Taylors statements gave insight of how the female

Hippolytus, Troilus And Criseyde And The City Of Women
In ancient literature, interactions between women are rare, but when they do occur they help develop the state of a woman, both mentally and
emotionally. In studying several examples from ancient texts such as Hippolytus, Troilus and Criseyde, and The City of Ladies, it is evident that
positive interactions between women act as a strengthening factor for female characters. Conversely, when a woman shuns her peers and relies on
herself or only the men in her life, she becomes weak and isolated.
A prime example of this latter cause and effect relationship occurs in one of Euripides's famous tragedies. In Hippolytus, Queen Phaedra is cursed with
love for the titular character, her son–in–law. She is horrified by this development and grows ill. Phaedra's nurse comforts her during her distress,
pointing out the "women standing at [her] side to help" (294). All of Phaedra's attendants are willing to help, and even after she reveals the
horrifying secret of her love, the women still offer their assistance. The nurse, though distressed at first, eventually recovers and reassures Phaedra
that they will "find some remedy for [her] lovesickness" (479). The loyalty and willingness to help shown by other women releases Phaedra from her
isolation and gives her an opportunity to be relieved of the terrible burden she carries. It makes Phaedra a stronger character, because she is no longer
only relying on herself.
The nurse decides to tell Hippolytus about the queen's love, hoping this will solve their dilemma. Even when Phaedra expresses her reservations about
the solution, the nurse dismisses her and forges ahead with her plan. This is the first sign of a breakdown in their relationship; neither woman fully
trusts the other to talk about and agree on a solution. When the nurse's solution causes Hippolytus to fly into a rage and condemn them both, Phaedra
calls the nurse a "corrupted, damned seducer of [her] friends" (682). When the nurse tries to defend the good intentions of her actions, Phaedra
dismisses her with a cold, "speak no more to me" (706). She refuses to find a compromise or understanding with the nurse, and does not trust her
enough to give her a second chance. Instead, she turns to spiteful insults and pushes

Britney Spears as Role Model for All Women Essay
Britney Spears' prevalence as a pre–teen pop culture icon cannot be denied or ignored. Spears, along with her colleagues Christina Aguilera, Jessica
Simpson, Mandy Moore and many others, are ever present on the "Top 40," make frequent appearances on MTV, and can often be found on magazine
covers and in photo spreads. Spears is especially popular among pre–teen girls, who buy her records, singing and dancing along to the lyrics. These
lyrics often deal with love, lust, and sex–topics some consider too mature for the young girls targeted by Spears' marketing. Young women today are
maturing at increasingly earlier ages, and the sexual messages in Spears' songs may simply be satisfying an existing demand for these types of songs. ...

When speaking about early pop music songs, she explains "although they were mass–produced they were individually interpreted. The songs were
ours–but the were also everyone else's...we found solidarity as girls" (499). This certainly holds true for Spears' songs. Spears is often criticized for
having mass–produced songs that someone else wrote for her. However, these songs have mass appeal which Douglas considers a strength. Pre–teen
girls, in the midst of forging an identity among their peers can certainly find solidarity by singing out the words to "Hit Me Baby One More Time"
together. At the very least, Spears' music will serve to unite women twenty years from now who will still know all the words to the catchy tunes as
they play over the oldies radio station.
At the same time, depending on each girl's individual knowledge and experience, the songs will be interpreted differently. The lyrics give voice to a
range of emotions that girls may have and be unable to express otherwise. Another positive quality of pop music is that it can give conflicting
emotions a voice, something that can aid in the process of growing up. As Douglas put it, girl groups "gave voice to all the warring selves inside us
struggling, blindly and with a crushing sense of insecurity, to forge something resembling a coherent identity...girl group music let us try on and act out

Film Analysis: Real Women Have Curves
Throughout the movie Real Women Have Curves, Ana deals with a fairly common issue: body image. Despite being constantly told by her own
mother that she is fat and that she'd be pretty if she was skinny, she comes to realization that her body is part of who she is and she should be proud
of it, but, really, she is so much more than her weight. She demonstrates confidence in her body and in herself as a person. She sets clear examples of
the first two components of the female gaze: (1) Women possess the gaze or do the looking, and (2) Women enjoy and control their own bodies and/or
sexuality. Chronologically, Ana displays the second component of the female gaze before the first. In fact, in the five and a half minute clip
designated for this analysis, she proves her control over her own body multiple times. In the beginning of the clip, she decides to purchase condoms at
the drugstore, hinting at the following scene, when Ana and Jimmy sleep together for the first time. Not only is Ana the one to buy the condoms, but
she is also the one to initiate the sex. She ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As she looks at herself in the mirror in Jimmy's room, she still appears a little uncomfortable with herself, but she realizes there is no reason to be,
because that's who she is, and being herself is a beautiful thing. She also makes a comment to Jimmy as she is about to leave that still shows some
insecurity. He tells her he will write to her and send her emails. She quickly tells him no. She thinks that they will not have anything in common
anymore, and that he'll find someone else. "You'll probably end up meeting some skinny girl, right?" she says. I think that while she is learning to
accept her own body, she is still buying into the idea that skinny automatically means better, and that if Jimmy finds a skinny girl that is interested in
him, he will be more interested in her than he is in

The House On Mango Street Women Essay
In the novella, The House on Mango Street, Esperanza tells stories of the many women, young and old, she has met and learned about. Few of these
women have been respected by the men in their lives. Most of these men consider women things to possess. Some of these men have their reasons,
though inexcusable, for how they act. Very few are kind and considerate towards the ladies in their lives. The men in this novella all have their own
stories that are inexplicably intertwined to the suffering of women. Investigating these stories shows that in Esperanza's world, men treat women like
property, and men treat women like they are to be used. One of the first men that pop up is Esperanza's great grandfather in "My Name". Esperanza

Women have gender roles forced upon them that they are expected to fulfill, in the novella and in real life, and most times the men in their lives
help to push them directly into those expectations. These men are under the belief that that is what women are meant for. The men do not treat
women like they should be treated. The men treat women with disrespect by taking control of their lives and shaping those lives into how women
are expected to be, and believe women belong to them. The men treat women like objects to fulfill their own desires. The problems between
genders in this novella are becoming more addressed in today's society. Women are breaking standards set for them and men are accepting it and
encouraging it. Even so, the fact still remains that there are women who can't change their life and men exist who still have such outdated beliefs
about women. The House on Mango Street is a great example how women are not to be treated by men. Hopefully, one day the world can overcome
expectations set for all genders and people can live happily without boxes to be forced

The Gender Divide Between Men And Women
During the Feminist Movement in the late 19th century and present day, leading women in America and all around the world have stood up for the
rights of their gender in order to eradicate the social inequalities and stereotypes that have been formulated over hundreds of years to convey the
impression that women are the inferior gender. This movement stimulated many ideas on the treatment and perception of women as a gender and came
with progress but also with opposition. While many acknowledged the oppression toward women in society, others accepted the divide between men
and women as only immutable differences and not prejudice. Although both Jamaica Kincaid, author of "Girl," and Anna Quindlen, author of "Between
the Sexes, A Great Divide," agree that there is a great social divide between men and women, Kincaid establishes a demanding, harsh tone in her
passage to demonstrate that the gender divide is absolutely unacceptable whereas Quindlen establishes a lighter tone to demonstrate that the gender
divide should just be accepted as differences rather than prejudice. Additionally, the two overlapping but contrasting ideas can be attributed to the
background of the authors; Quindlen is a white American while Kincaid is Caribbean and from a poor family, thus it is safe to assume that the girl in
Kincaid's story is actually Kincaid as a little girl who was perhaps told by her mother to emulate someone like Quindlen, a white woman. Both
feminists, Kincaid and Quindlen

Women 's Beauty : The Toilette Scene
Since ancient times, women's beauty has long been a common topic for literature and art. Appreciating women's charming appearances and behaviors
is free to talk about both in privacy and public. However, it should be pointed out that as what the painting Admonitions of the Instructress to Court
Ladies reflects to people, due to the effect of old Chinese cultures and traditions, women's inner self actually plays a more signifiant role than their
external appearances, which echoes on a similar idea from Upanishads that attaining self(atman) is a major goal for people while the body is unreliable
and not long lasting.
The painting, Admonitions of the Instructress to Court Ladies: The Toilette Scene, is a famous art work created by an outstanding Chinese painter, Gu
Kaizhi, in Jin Dynasty(265–420). The original art work is composed of 12 different pieces, but due to careless preservation, only 9 of them remains
nowadays, and Thee Toilette Scene is one of the remained. The idea of Admonitions of the Instructress to Court Ladies originates from a poetic text,
Nushijian, written by Zhang Hua, a Western–Jin–dynasty court official who intended to utilize this text to teach women basic rules and rituals(Hinsch
51). Therefore, Gu Kaizhi transformed this text into painting to further illustrate and benefit future generations of the virtues that ancient Chinese
women should possess in order to be a qualified woman, hold a position in the court, and serve for the empress.

The Role Of Women In House On Mango Street By Sandra Cisneros
Mouse traps, they aren't the most pleasant thought but it gets a point across. Tiptoeing and jumping are what people do when attempting to no sett off
the mouse traps, so imagine penniless women having to tiptoe around circumstances almost everyday of their lives that would get them sucked into bad
situations. In Sandra Cisneros' book, "House on Mango Street", well thought out motifs and symbolisms become very useful in order to convey the
expectations of women in a poor community make the women more susceptible to becoming trapped inside this environment.
The expectations of the women in "House on Mango Street" repeats throughout the story in the form of shoes. One very prominent vignette is "The
Family of Little Feet" where Esperanza, Rachel, and Lucy are all given high heeled shoes to try on, they excitedly decide to walk outside in them
because the heels made them feel powerful and mature. The girls walking around doesn't result well due to multiple men sexualizing them though,
especially when a man looks at them and scrutinizes their appearance, "Them are dangerous, he says. You girls too young to be wearing shoes like
that. Take them shoes off before I call the cops, but we just run" (Cisneros 41). This along with a bum who asks for a kiss and a boy who shouts at
them to lead him to heaven, give Esperanza, Lucy, and Rachel a small glimpse of what the men see them as–sexual objects. As much as people want
others' opinions to be irrelevant, it still inevitably takes a

Women During The Han Dynasty
Women during the Han Dynasty
Lessons for Women is a book of conduct written during the Han Dynasty by Ban Zhao (C. 45–120) to advise the women of her family on the proper
conduct of a wife. Ancient China around this time was a Confucian state in which the society was control by the belief in order and harmony. The book
contains seven chapters that talks about: humility, husband and wife, respect and caution, womanly qualifications, wholehearted devotion, implicit
obedience, and harmony with younger brothers– and sisters– in law. This work of literature reflects on how a proper women was to behave obediently
to the husband, by being devoted and respectful to avoid humility to herself, her parents and her clan. It gives the readers an idea of the power that
men had over women during this time period and the exceptions for both roles of husband and wife. Lessons of women informs the readers that women
during the Han Dynasty had no control over their own lives and the philosophy of Confucian had a huge influence on the society's everyday life. Ban
Zhao emphasizes the importance of distinctions between men and women, and their separate natures.
From the time of birth a woman is taught to be a good wife, she learns how to submit herself to her husband and understands that her sole purpose in
life is to serve him. Humility was not something that a women was to bring to her family. Rituals were held because it was believed there were a

People will scroll past the woman's picture and assume that the woman has glamourous life. In reality, they are unaware that the woman is pretending

more women will feel content to accept who they are. The woman behind the picture is in distress. The artist is concerned with the number of

Women During The Progressive Era
Woman in the progressive era
What is a woman's role? Is it to be a housewife and take care of her husband and children? Or is it much more then that. Between the years 1897– 1917
the progressive era came of age. This era not only created rapid economic growth but also created a voice for woman. As woman began to have a voice
they were ready to use it and make a change that would affect American history forever. The progressive era was an era of change. The great depression
had just ended and people looked to the government to help make things better. During this era the only woman who were working were young
unmarried woman. Although they may have had a job, the working conditions in these places were unbearable. The progressive era brought these
problems to the attention of the government and started to make some changes. Putting in place inspections and health regulations in factories. These
were not the only changes the government ended up making. Throughout American history up until the progressive era a woman's role was in the
household. According to Charlotte Perkins Gilman " It is not motherhood that keeps the housewife on her feet from dawn till dark; it is house
service....Woman work longer and harder than most men" (Gilman 692). During this time most woman did not have many jobs and those that did have
jobs were young and unmarried. The progressive era brought change to this. According to Eric Foner in Give me liberty! An American history, during

Review Of ' What Women Can Learn From Men ' By Margaret Wente
A Review of "What Women Can Learn From Men" By Margaret Wente Margaret Wente's July 2015 Globe and Mail article, "What Women Can Learn
From Men" addresses a common phenomenon, the comparison: between men and women. With her article, she hopes to advise women on how they
can improve themselves and their lives with simple changes. Furthermore, she wisely chooses to avoid a sexist approach by commending men on their
behavioral traits despite her gender. Infact, using logical implications, she portrayed herself as an example rather than offend her audience. Additionally,
through evidence, figures, facts and a link, she skillfully supports her theories thus making her article significantly factual and effective. Although
Margaret starts by stereotypically generalising men, she depicts some of their great qualities that women can truly learn from. Using different
approaches, she portrays women and their thoughts then skillfully explains how they can better themselves by "thinking" like men. Despite how she
initially condemned men, she concludes by logically beseeching that man–shaming "has gone far enough" and should stop. Despite being an article in
the extensively read Canadian newspaper "the Globe and mail", Margaret's target audience is the broad female population. She therefore uses a
different approach, one with less specialized language, as was stated in "Mind Wide Open." The purpose is quite clear: she portrays women's
behavioral traits and their thoughts then

Women, Islamic, And Saudi Arabian Women
The topic that stood out to me the most would be the impact of ethnicity amongst women. It is amazing how much being a woman and being part of a
certain ethnicity can have such an impact on a woman's life. It is already hard enough for woman to been seen as equal, just imagine what it is like
being a woman of a particular ethnicity. The two articles that we discussed in class are about Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women. Filipino,
Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women share some things in common when it comes to their everyday lives and cultures. Within thePhilippine culture, men
and women have very different duties in life. Men are supposed to be the worker of the house and the women stay in and take care of the family. The...

However, America has started to not think about that stereotype as much, whereas the Philippine people have not budged on thinking any
differently. Another thing that Filipina woman go through is not having the privileges like other boys, especially their brothers. The author states,
"parents seldom allowed their daughters to date, to stay out late, to spend the night at a friend's house, or to take an out of town trip" (Espiritu, p.
16). Therefore, the Filipino girls do not get to experience what it is like to be a teenager. The girls could experience not being able to be social
because of their parents keeping them so distanced from the real world. This could damage them when they become adults. Another thing that stood
out was the same parents that are stopping their daughter from doing all these things, are not stopping their son, who could be even younger than the
daughter. This makes absolutely no sense because why would someone let a younger child do something over the older child? A part of the article
that stood out to me was "although many parents discourage or forbid dating for daughter, they still fully expect them to fulfill their traditional roles
as women: to marry and have children" (Espiritu, p. 17). This quote shows that Filipino woman do not have choices in life. It is like the parents are
being hypocrites because they are telling them not to do one thing but then expect them to have a family. How are they supposed to both when they

Why Do Women Have A Place In The Renaissance
Both articles provided interesting viewpoints into the lives of women during the Renaissance. The article by Kelly focused more on life in the court
as well as the romantic, sexual, and political lives, or lack thereof, of women during the Renaissance. The article by MacNeil focused on the life of one
woman in particular, Isabella Andreini. MacNeil focused more on the arts side of the Renaissance rather than the court, political, or sexual aspects of
women. As stated previously, both articles provided interesting insight into the lives on women during the Renaissance, but both articles come to
different conclusions and raise different questions after reading them through.
Joan Kelly–Gadol wrote her article on whether or not she believes women had a place in the Renaissance or not. She focused on three major topics
in her research: "Love and the Medieval Lady," "Politics and Culture," and "The Renaissance of Chastity." During her research, she focused heavily of
the lives of women in the court and rarely the lives of everyday women. The article also did ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The MacNeil article had many excerpts from writings by Andreini and Putneanus. The article also seemed to pull more specifics from history rather
than generalizations that one does not necessarily know the resource from which it came. The MacNeil article also provided a more realistic
approach to the topic of women in the Renaissance. It was able to prove that women can have a place in the Renaissance and they can come to power,
but they are limited. Women are often labeled as men if their work is in the masculine arts. At the same time, the article also proved that stereotypes
and the degrading of women still existed back then. It was very prominent in the scene that Andreini produced. She was challenging that and it drew
huge controversy.
One last point that needs to be made about women in the Renaissance comes from the MacNeil article, page

The Trojan Women
Euripides: Past Time Activist for Women In "The Trojan Women," there are four enduring women who dominate the play and only two men who say
anything at all. Moving us with their rants and dramatic reactions, these women engulf the audience in overwhelming grief and irresistible pride.
Euripides emphasizes these four women to help us understand one of his main themes. Hecuba with her pride, Cassandra with her virginity and uncanny
wisdom, Andromache with her misery and heartache, and Helen with her powerful, seductive reasoning all represent superior illustrations of feminism
throughout the play.
The first woman introduced is Hecuba, who grieves for her family, people, and ravaged homeland. She says, "Sorrow, my sorrow. What sorrow is there

While frantically celebrating her appalling marriage to King Agamemnon, giving praise to Hymen, the god of marriage, she says, "O Mother, crown
my triumph with a wreath" (I, i, 361). Here she does not show signs of terrible heartache about being sent to a bridal bed that will ruin her life's
work and sacrifice her virginity. Until she begins to tell her mother how she will try to take revenge for her family does she show pain by saying, "I
shall kill [Agamemnon] mother, lay his house as low as he laid ours, make him pay for all he made my father suffer, brothers . . ."(I, i, 367–369).
Raving, she prophecies, "If Apollo lives, my marriage will be bloodier than Helen's," and in time we see that she is right with the fall of Greece (I, i,
364–365). She also makes an interesting point on the defeat of Troy. She explains that the Greeks are just there to fight and conquer, and that their
families are not there to soften their hearts. The Trojans fight as a family for their people. The Trojans have lost, but they died with great honor
trying to save and protect their country and kinsmen. Cassandra refers to those soldiers, her family, who fought with a final divination, "Brothers, in
Troy's earth laid, my father, a little time and I am with you. You dead, I shall come to you a victor. Those ruined by my hand who ruined us" (I, i,
469–472). Even though she is portrayed as mad, the evidence of her wisdom, whether it be given to her by the god she has devoted her life, or just
insane predictions, shows us that women could be intelligent and know of things to come just as men. Giving us our second example of feminism,

Women In Dr. Pepper Advertising
Jane Austen once wrote, "I hate to hear you talk about all women as if they were fine ladies instead of rational creatures. None of us want to be in calm
waters all our lives" (Quotes by...). This quote was written in her novel, Persuasion, in 1818, 195 years before a Dr. Pepper ad was made. Back in 1818,
women were all taught to follow the rules that society put on them. They had to be classy and proper at all times or else they were not considered
feminine. The same idea still goes on today. We all have to all like the same things and act the same way. It is a shame we have not progressed much
in making women and men be treated the same since 1818. These Dr. Pepper ads use women to get consumers to buy their products by using
techniques that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They wanted to spread words about the product and have everyone at least know what it is. They both have the constraint of offending people.
Women could take the ad from 1979 and say it is sexist because they are using a woman to try and market a product. It is a very common occurrence
to use women in that way because they are using an image of an ideal woman. Putting a strong handsome man in this ad instead of a woman would
change the entire dynamic. If that were the case, men would be less inclined to go buy Dr. Pepper because it would make them feel like they were
buying the drink to be like the man on the cover. With the ad from 2013, I think the ad makers knew they were going to offend women, but they
probably thought that they would take it more of a joke. Is Dr. Pepper really appealing to men here, or are they just having fun and looking for a lot
of free media attention? Women being treated less than men is not a funny joke. I think in today's time, those topics should not be joked about because
women are treated different from men and this is still a pressing issue. We want to move towardgender equality, and ads like Dr. Pepper are setting us
back on getting to that goal. Dr. Pepper got what they wanted; people are talking about their ad and the product, but maybe not in the way they

Women In The House On Mango Street
The theme of a patriarchal society where beauty is a weakness and having too much of it only means darkness is very prominent in Sandra Cisneros's
The House on Mango Street. Esperanza, the protagonist of the numerous vignettes, highlights how this affects the young women on Mango Street.
The vignette "Beautiful and Cruel," conveys the impact it has on Esperanza. In this vignette, Esperanza feels that she is "an ugly daughter" and "the
one nobody cares about" (Cisneros 88). She does not need, or want, a man to lead her life, unlike the women she knows. She does not need, or want, a
man to make decisions for her. Unfortunately, she still feels the pressure to look gorgeous and stunning: "Nenny has pretty eyes and it's easier to talk

Adding to this, it is very common that the father does not want his daughter to be too gorgeous. The saying all beauty comes with a price goes
hand in hand with what the fathers of these girls wish. They also want their daughters to settle down with a man and have children that just keep
coming. Sadly, this is something society has deemed acceptable, and many young girls are now trying to be what they know as the stereotype of
"pretty" and "perfect." Suddenly, it is all that matters and what they want simply is not important, they are not able to be their own kind of
beautiful. Women and young ladies all over the world see models, actors, actresses. People who have the so called "perfect body" and face. A
chiseled abdomen and prominent jaw line for guys. Hair that you can run your hands through. Flawless smile full of pearly white teeth. A
completely flat stomach with a hint of abs for girls. Long, long legs that go on for miles. Flowing, glossy, shiny hair and a button nose. Big wide
eyes. To the world these features make someone beautiful. In fact, in order to be a Victoria's Secret Runway Model, you must be at least 5'10. When
these young girls, and guys see these superficial people they assume that they too must look like them. They do not know that these are people who
probably starve themselves, truly experiencing the saying "beauty is pain." Beauty should be

Flirting With Danger: The Difficult Experiences Of Women
Sexy, Confident, Attractive, Nice body, Intelligent, and Classy are some of the many words that the media uses to describe women. In society women
have to be perfect and act lady like. Women have to have a good attitude and always pleasure men. One example of this is the clip titled "Flirting with
Danger" where young women were interviewed and had the opportunity to talk about their sex life and difficult experiences. When they were being
interviewed many women mentioned that they felt like they had a double personality were they were expected to act both mean and nice. Women often
have to deal with difficult decisions and perform personalities where they pretend they are someone that in reality are not only to fit in and pleasure

Desire of the Fourteenth Century Women
Desire of the Fourteenth Century Women
Is not what we desire, the most hard to get? It has always been this way. Unfortunately, women's rights and abilities have been underestimated over the
centuries. In the fourteenth century, the status and condition of a European woman depended on her husband's position. Women had to endure
arranged marriages, abuse and male dominance. During that time, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote The Canterbury Tales and taught us about one extraordinary
woman whose name is Dame Alisoun. Alisoun is called The Wife of Bath, and she defines what women desired most in fourteenth–century England.
She believes that women wish for power over their husbands, and I personally agree with her opinion. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Wife of Bath points out that there are no women writers and that only men write. Everything described in Janekin's book is written from the men's
point of view, and here Alisoun uses a painting as an analogy: "Who painted the leon, tel me who? By God, if wommen hadden writen stories, As
clerkes han wihin hir oratories, They wolde han writen of men more wikkednesse, Than al the merk of Adam may redresse (line 695). If women got a
chance to write, they would write good things about themselves. The Wife of Bath explains that actually women are unable to present theirs ideas
because in the fourteenth century, women were not necessarily literate. Alisoun probably cannot read herself. Only men can write about women, and
Alisoun does not agree with what they say.
The Wife of Bath breaks the rule and norms for the fourteenth–century woman. She mentions God often, and she explains that true nobility comes from
him: "For gentilesse cometh fro God allone" (line 1168). Here she mentions that class or social status does not matter, and that true nobility comes from
God. Even though Alisoun has an

Character Analysis Of Little Women In Little Women
Margaret "Meg" March Brook, the oldest March sister in Louisa May Alcott's classic novel Little Women, is demure yet fierce in her loyalty. Although
she cares too much about other's opinions, she learns to focus on kindness rather than charm and propriety, and value hard work over wealth. Known
to be motherly, Meg loves and encourages her friends and younger sisters. She embodies warmth and compassion in her family throughout the book,
first when she is living at home with her mother and sisters, and later when she is married. Meg is loyal, compassionate, and gentle. She uses her
loving nature to encourage those around her– from the time the story opens, and she is encouraging her sisters to purchase gifts for their hard working
mother for Christmas rather than for themselves, to when she is married to John Brook and described as a "most devoted little wife" (page 278). I
also put forth my best effort to encourage and care for those I love. Although she is usually quite docile, when her aunt tells her that she can't love
John Brook because he is poor, Meg shows her strong sense of loyalty, exclaiming, "I couldn't do better if I waited half my life!" (page 225). Alcott
says that "Meg hardly knew herself, she felt so brave and independent", and describes her as "Looking prettier than ever in her earnestness". Although
often reserved, it would be a mistake to describe Margaret March as weak; her strength is evident when fighting for those she loves, and, if one

Cultural Views Of Women In The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath
Women of early to mid 1900's were oppressed by the man's perfect view of what a woman should and should not be. Hastily after they were given the
right to vote in 1920, men pressured women to stay in the realm of expertise they had already participated in for centuries, domesticity. Sylvia Plath the
writer of, The Bell Jar, uses the life of Esther Greenwood to show how cultural views of women disabled women from reaching their highest abilities.
Women who sought a higher education or an occupation above the norm were pitied in society, looked down on for not conforming to the American
dream of the "suburb housewife" (Friedan,60). Women of higher positions were judged by their looks instead of the qualifications. Life for women
was particularly hard in the 1950's, many women would go about their day drugged with uppers and plaster the fake smiles on their faces just to be
favored in society; but the mundanity of daily life dragged on and many women found no challenge or enjoyment in their tasks (Friedan, 62). Men used
the pressures of society to oppress women in conforming with the ideal housewife, instead of joining the workforce and creating their own destiny –like
the women before they had fought for– they applied themselves to an image created for them by "God" and by "man". Esther's constant struggle to
follow the cultural expectations of women, leads her down a path of insanity when she finds herself outcasted because of her desire to be a
self–sufficient woman (Plath,

Women 's Influence On Female Body Experience
A report by the New York Times calculated that there are more big companies ran by men named John than there are big companies ran by women in
the United States. While women are beginning to take on larger roles in corporations, governments, and society, as a whole, there is still the very large
issue of small representation of women in leadership roles. Through discussing Marion Young's "OnFemale Body Experience" I intend to argue that
when women face a limited range of bodily comportment, it translates to a limited ability to reach our full potential as people. Women feel they cannot
take up space and are unlikely to assert themselves in ways that draw attention to ourselves, women are in often objectified and therefore there are ...

Young states that, "woman is thereby both culturally and socially denied the subjectivity, autonomy, and creativity that are definitive of being human,
and that in patriarchal society are accorded to men." (pg. 25)
Men and women often use their bodies in different ways, this is not breaking news. However, the reasons and consequences behind this difference
is important. The situations women will often put themselves in will vary greatly from men because of the perceived abilities of our bodies.
Most women would not accept a job on a construction site because of a lack of belief of what the female body is capable of. Similarly, women
who apply to these types of jobs are often not hired. When lifting objects, or using force to accomplish a task, we "frequently fail to summon the full
possibilities of our muscular coordination, position, poise, and bearing." (pg. 26) This is, in part, because "feminine bodily existence is overlaid with
immanence." (pg. 29) Instead of using her whole body, a woman will "concentrate motion in one part of the body alone, while the rest of the body
remains relatively immobile." (pg. 29) While men often experience the full ability of their bodies, and therefore, can fully accomplish, without issue
any task they want, this is not often the case for women.
According to Merleau–Ponty, "the potentials that are opened

The Fight For Women By Charlotte Butler
The Fight for Women
Document 23.2
The British Parliament 's passing of the Contagious Disease Acts in 1866 resulted in Josephine Butler writing a letter to the International Convention of
Women in Washington. The purpose of the act was to reduce prostitution and sexually transmitted diseases, specifically occurring within the military
forces. Butler's letter included topics, arguments, and political issues women had to work on even though they were not given the right to vote or
engage in politics. Butler starts her letter talking to the ladies of the Ladies National Association which was assembled in 1869, their goal is to repeal
the Acts of Parliament on 1866–69. She apologizes for her absence at the meeting but her friend Mrs. Steward was able to attend and be the voice of
Butler in the lack of her presence. Butler suggested the committee needed to elect a delegate who had shown great work in the field and for her Mrs.
Steward was the lady for this position. She had done work not only in England but also Belgium when English–girls were being bought, stolen, and
destroyed under the State–protected vice. Butler explains that there are not many of the original women left, she says, "There is now a crowd of
younger workers who are bravely preaching the purity crusade and doing excellent vigilance work; while there are few of the veteran 's left who
inaugurated in 1869 the fierce contest with our Government, the House of Lords and Commons, the Medical Boards, the Press,

Theme Of Women In The House On Mango Street
For decades, the social stereotype of women hindering their rights to stay home and act as the caretaker has been widely accepted in various cultures
and civilizations. Today, many individuals fight to renew women's rights and dissolve this stereotype, yet it is still prevalent amongst society. This
issue is so relevant that many literary works have incorporated the idea into their theme. Throughout Sandra Cisneros' novel The House on Mango
Street, the idea of a woman by the window is repeatedly mentioned and symbolizes the belief that women cannot reach their full potential and are left
watching life's possibilities pass them by. This image of a woman by a window is first introduced in the vignette "My Name," however Cisneros
integrates this idea in the duration of the novel to the point where it's embedded in the central theme. Esperanza describes her great–grandmother whom
she inherited her name as a "wild horse of a woman," (Cisneros 11). She goes on to share that her great–grandmother never forgave her
great–grandfather for stealing her away to marry. Esperanza explains, "She [great–grandmother] looked out the window her whole life, the way so
many women sit their sadness on an elbow," and ponders if she was "sorry because she couldn't be all the things she wanted to be," (Cisneros 11). The
use of personification gives a feeling (sadness) the human–like quality of sitting on an elbow, almost like the sadness had become a whole new body

14000 Military Job Opportunities For Women Essay
"The Defense Department recently announced new policies that will open more than 14,000 military job opportunities to women. Which seems like a
great step–except that more than 200,000 positions will still remain exclusive to men, from front–line infantry positions to high–level special operations
roles." States Dani Moritz from The Muse. (Mortiz) Women have been thrown out of spotlight when it came to genuine positions. Does this shout
disparity for women, as well as stereotyping and it for the most part tosses women's rights ideal out of the window?
Women began to climb the ladder and finally became equal to men, well almost. Women's rights include, but is not limited to positions that anyman
can hold, promotions that were not allowed beforehand last but not least socially and legal equality. As women, we can't continue to yell inequality
when we are not on the same playing field as men. We, women, have more leverage than the men. Aspiring to be like men would require us to also go
the same extra mile that the male has to also. Women's right is not for us to be equal while also being held on a pedestal at the same time. Equality
goes both ways, it is for us, as well as men. The inequality of the military has men doing the double of what women do because they are seen as being
mentally and physically stronger. This relates to the requirements of the military that they have in place which indeed need to be changed for it to be
deemed as an equal service. This identifies

Women 's Allowance Of Women
A topic that is becoming more and more prevalent in today 's society is the allowance of women into direct combat roles in our armed forces.
Forests densely covered with fog, barren deserts, bomb cratered fields. Those are just a few of the many different types of scenarios encountered by
troops in direct combat roles on the modern day battlefield. The warrior in today 's direct combat roles need to be decisive, mentally and emotionally
stable, very physically fit, and the ability to be able to take an enemy combatant's life at any moment. Do any of these descriptions accurately match
women in today 's military? To allow or disallow women into combat scenarios? Some argue that women 's allowance to fight in direct combat roles

The Causes And Effects Of Stereotypes On Women
Stereotypes are seen everywhere people go. They have affected women since the dawn of time. The ones held for women affect them in every
possible way . All the little stereotypes that women have add up creating big effects on women's day to day life. Their is no way around it especially
in the workforce. The impact of stereotypes starts at a young age and these impacts stick with them fro the rest of their life. The cause of the impacts
determines their career.
The effects of stereotypes that women face in society start very early in their childhood. The media plays a big role in this. Miribel Tran the author of
an article called The Effect of Social Media in Young Girls talks about how every time agirl opens a magazine, turn on the television or goes on any
form of social media there is always a model on there that has been photoshopped to look smaller than she already does. There is always a new
product out there to make them look "better" or more "attractive". This makes girls feel like they have to look this way and if they do not they will
not be noticed or looked at in a positive way. This causes most little girls to go into depression. Depression leads the little girls getting obese. The
obesity makes them feel more worse about them because they think they are even further away from looking like the women they see on social
media. This just makes it even more bad because this leads to grades falling in school (Tran ). The falling of their grades affects them in the future
because if their grades fall they feel dumb. This makes them think that they will not get into a good college because they feel they are not smart
enough for it. This stops girls from pursuing their dreams and affect the type of job they get in the future.
The stereotype that men hold the character trait of brilliance and women do not is another big one that affects little girls. It affects most girls at the
age of six. In theguardian Nicola Davis talks about a research done by three US Universities about how this stereotype affects girls. They did a research
on 400 kids between the ages of five and seven half of them were girls the other half were boys. Out of the 400 kids 96 girls and boys of all three ages

Negative Influence on Women in the Media Melanic R....
This article, written by Melanic R. Salome , is about the women's misrepresentation of in media . Salome considers media as an important tool that
affects American women in a negative way. Media has become of paramount interest in our lives, despite the fact that its negative influences on us are
increasing at a rapid pace. Media promotes unrealistic and unattainable images that result in depression and dissatisfaction among people. Therefore,
media reflects the image of society and the way people think about themselves. Moreover, The writer strives to show the portrayal of women as depicted
by media, stating that historically women are more likely to suffer from marginalization and stereotyping than men do . She claims that women are
mostly represented as sexual objects and marriage oriented. She highlights that it is unfortunate that this marginalization of women is still continuing,
but it is being exploited through a different way by media. Women beauty is used in advertisement on purpose to sell products while men are usually
represented as elegant leaders and decision makers. Media, according to Salome, tries hardly to convince American society believing in inaccessible and
nonsensical goals. The author believes that women should be accepted as they are without being incorporated into the picture of what the ideal women
are. Furthermore, she claims that the American society is a society that cares just about appearance as an important part of the human existence.

Objectification Of Women Essay
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". However there is a well known, well discussed, universal definition of perfection for all women. One that is
consistent throughout different areas of the world and different allotments of the human culture. This standard of the ideal woman is based off of not
only physical but intellectual standards predominantly in advertising. According to Margaret Atwood in TheFemale Body, a woman's body is used in
today's culture "to sell and advertise products". These products vary from "door knockers, bottle openers, clocks with ticking bellies, lampshades,
and nutcrackers". By having stores sell these items they are completely promoting the objectification of women to help sell their goods and
services which is down right direful. How are women expected to ever be treated equal if business' continue to sell discriminatory product,
lessening the view of the female anatomy. Materialistic items are not the only way a female's body is exploited in today's culture. Aside from bottle
openers and clocks, women are universally seen as a "renewable" sex symbol The Female Body (pg. 1013 para. 6) especially in magazines. The Venus

Theme Of Women In The Canterbury Tales
In Thousand and One Nights and Canterbury Tales, both women in the story are fighting to save their kingdom. In Thousand and One Nights,
Shahrazad volunteered to stay with the king hoping to change his ways. In Canterbury Tales, the wife is standing up for the women in her kingdom
and teaches the Knight a lesson. These women are very important in both stories because they step up to make a change in their kingdom. In Thousand
and One Nights, Shahrazad has volunteered to marry the king, knowing that he kills the women he sleeps with the next morning (p.554). Shahrazad's
plan is to tell him stories every night with each one being better than the last (p.554). The king will not want to kill her because he will want to hear
her stories and by doing this she hopes to teach the king how to restore order in his own realm and his own soul (p.554).
The first night with the king, she asked if she could tell her sister goodbye before daybreak, so her sister came and slept under the bed (p.566).
Shahrazad's sister asked her to tell a story, so she asked permission from the king (p.566). She told a story of the Merchant and the Demon and in the
middle of the story she fell asleep, leaving the king full of curiosity to hear the rest (p.568). The next night the king asked her to finish her story and
this went on for many nights (p.568). On the fourth night, the king thought, "By God, I will not have her put to death until I hear the rest of the story

Women 's Rites Of Passage
Introduction
Every culture in the world has rites of passage. Whether it be death and dying, birth or a transition from puberty to adulthood, every culture has certain
rituals they use to christen these changes in social status within a society. A rite of passage is symbolic in how important a change is in the lives of the
people who experience them. Status changes such as these are very important in the eyes of their culture and the ceremonies they produce help them
retain stability while their society adjust to the changes that are occurring to the individuals. An interesting rite of passage that can be found in many
cultures around the world is a young girls transition into womanhood. Two of the cultures that one examined this rite in were the Oglala Sioux of South
Dakota, and the Tukuna of the Amazon. With the genocide of the Native Americans, many of the rituals and ceremonies they use have not been seen by
outsiders. Information on any ceremony can be hard to find. Fortunately, the Oglala Sioux Wichasa Wakhan, holy man, Black Elk recorded these
ceremonies before his death. In the book The Sacred Pipe, Black Elk discusses the seven sacred rites of the Oglala Sioux, one of which is Ishna Ta Awi
Cha Lowan, preparing a young girl for womanhood. (Black Elk, 1989). In this ceremony, the rite is performed just after the young girls first menstrual
cycle. Black Elk states that this transition is very important to the Oglala Sioux, because this is when a young girl makes

Women In Business

  • 1. Women in Business Women Entrepreneurs in Business While women still face an uphill battle when it comes to breaking the corporate glass ceiling, many women are finding success these days as entrepreneurs, building their own businesses without those ceilings to hold them down. The growth rate of women–owned businesses has climbed steadily, even as they continue to face challenges with getting the financing and other assistance they need to succeed. However, there's no doubt that women entrepreneurs are, as a group, innovative and highly successful. "Look at women in business today, and you see a distinct new generation of Entrepreneurs. They are experienced, educated and have an appetite for growth." – Julie Weeks, Director of Research, Center for Women's... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within just one month, it had surpassed Donahue as the #1 local talk show, and within a year it was renamed TheOprah Winfrey Show. It has remained the number one talk show for 18 seasons, has won dozens of Emmys, and is seen by an estimated 30 million viewers a week in the United States and is broadcast internationally in 111 countries. Not content to work for someone else, in 1988, Oprah founded her own production facility, Harpo Studios. Since then, it has grown into Harpo, Inc., which employs around 250 full–time people in television and film production, magazine publishing, and online media. Although she's a billionaire (the first black woman to achieve it) with a long list of business accomplishments and awards, Oprah told Fortune Magazine, "I don't think of myself as a businesswoman. But by most people's accounts, she's the most powerful woman in the entertainment industry. Mary Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics created a business that has helped some half a million women fulfill their dreams of business ownership. A best–selling author and powerful motivational speaker, Lifetime Television named her the Most Outstanding Woman in Business in the 20th Century. With her life savings of $5,000 and the help of her 20–year–old son, Mary Kay opened her first store in Dallas, Texas in 1963. Mary Kay Inc. started with just nine independent beauty consultants. • 2. The Effects Of Donald Trump's Bashed On Women Donald Trump has bashed on women for not being as intelligent as men, and has glorified the looks of women who are beautiful, but Trump also bashes on the women who are not fit to his beauty standards. Donald Trump told an interviewer that, "A person who is very flat–chested is very hard to be a 10" (Trump, 2001). By saying that a person with a flat chest cannot look like the perfect ten, he is saying that women have to have large breasts to be beautiful. This claim of a beauty norm can cause many self– confidence issues in women. Donald Trump also told an interviewer, "Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that? Can you imagine that, the face of our next president? I mean, she's a woman, and I'm not supposed to say bad things, but really, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. True Equality for Women at the Workplace People are judged by their gender, which often, in many situations, lead to bias decisions and unfairness within business organizations for women. Women are often not held up to the standard of a man in the business workforce, which leaves them with fewer position choices outside the norm. Most jobs that women have are not demanding upon the body and require little to no strength. The failure to understand adaptation by the government has caused many reforms in the past, but there are still many flaws in the hiring system that often leave women asking questions and puzzled by the bias decisions of men in charge of the management of positions. The fight for equality amongst women has been going on for many years. Although women are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the interview she often became emotional and voiced her opinion on the situations that she had experienced and the experiences of the women in her family. Latrice retold stories of situations where her mother was turned down numerous of times because of the simple fact that she was a woman. The amount of pain caused to the family was present through her answers and descriptions of the issues. It further exemplifies the harm caused by people that have a poor mind setting toward business women and the ideal of a women being in charge of government situations. A North Carolina Agricultural and Technical senior by the name of Taylor was asked her point of view and what preparatory actions that she had took to prepare to step out into the business work force upon her graduation from college and she stated, " I already know that its going to be very hard to get the job that I want because the company is worked and managed by a majority of males." When asked why she felt this way she stated, "Things have not changed from years ago, we still have to fight for every job that we attempt to get even more so then men. Many of my teachers were women and they informed me that my degree had no meaning if I was not willing to fight for positions against one sided odds, so that let me know that women were not completely equal with men (Swenson)." • 4. Hippolytus, Troilus And Criseyde And The City Of Women In ancient literature, interactions between women are rare, but when they do occur they help develop the state of a woman, both mentally and emotionally. In studying several examples from ancient texts such as Hippolytus, Troilus and Criseyde, and The City of Ladies, it is evident that positive interactions between women act as a strengthening factor for female characters. Conversely, when a woman shuns her peers and relies on herself or only the men in her life, she becomes weak and isolated. A prime example of this latter cause and effect relationship occurs in one of Euripides's famous tragedies. In Hippolytus, Queen Phaedra is cursed with love for the titular character, her son–in–law. She is horrified by this development and grows ill. Phaedra's nurse comforts her during her distress, pointing out the "women standing at [her] side to help" (294). All of Phaedra's attendants are willing to help, and even after she reveals the horrifying secret of her love, the women still offer their assistance. The nurse, though distressed at first, eventually recovers and reassures Phaedra that they will "find some remedy for [her] lovesickness" (479). The loyalty and willingness to help shown by other women releases Phaedra from her isolation and gives her an opportunity to be relieved of the terrible burden she carries. It makes Phaedra a stronger character, because she is no longer only relying on herself. The nurse decides to tell Hippolytus about the queen's love, hoping this will solve their dilemma. Even when Phaedra expresses her reservations about the solution, the nurse dismisses her and forges ahead with her plan. This is the first sign of a breakdown in their relationship; neither woman fully trusts the other to talk about and agree on a solution. When the nurse's solution causes Hippolytus to fly into a rage and condemn them both, Phaedra calls the nurse a "corrupted, damned seducer of [her] friends" (682). When the nurse tries to defend the good intentions of her actions, Phaedra dismisses her with a cold, "speak no more to me" (706). She refuses to find a compromise or understanding with the nurse, and does not trust her enough to give her a second chance. Instead, she turns to spiteful insults and pushes ... • 5. Britney Spears as Role Model for All Women Essay Britney Spears' prevalence as a pre–teen pop culture icon cannot be denied or ignored. Spears, along with her colleagues Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore and many others, are ever present on the "Top 40," make frequent appearances on MTV, and can often be found on magazine covers and in photo spreads. Spears is especially popular among pre–teen girls, who buy her records, singing and dancing along to the lyrics. These lyrics often deal with love, lust, and sex–topics some consider too mature for the young girls targeted by Spears' marketing. Young women today are maturing at increasingly earlier ages, and the sexual messages in Spears' songs may simply be satisfying an existing demand for these types of songs. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When speaking about early pop music songs, she explains "although they were mass–produced they were individually interpreted. The songs were ours–but the were also everyone else's...we found solidarity as girls" (499). This certainly holds true for Spears' songs. Spears is often criticized for having mass–produced songs that someone else wrote for her. However, these songs have mass appeal which Douglas considers a strength. Pre–teen girls, in the midst of forging an identity among their peers can certainly find solidarity by singing out the words to "Hit Me Baby One More Time" together. At the very least, Spears' music will serve to unite women twenty years from now who will still know all the words to the catchy tunes as they play over the oldies radio station. At the same time, depending on each girl's individual knowledge and experience, the songs will be interpreted differently. The lyrics give voice to a range of emotions that girls may have and be unable to express otherwise. Another positive quality of pop music is that it can give conflicting emotions a voice, something that can aid in the process of growing up. As Douglas put it, girl groups "gave voice to all the warring selves inside us struggling, blindly and with a crushing sense of insecurity, to forge something resembling a coherent identity...girl group music let us try on and act out a host of ... • 6. Film Analysis: Real Women Have Curves Throughout the movie Real Women Have Curves, Ana deals with a fairly common issue: body image. Despite being constantly told by her own mother that she is fat and that she'd be pretty if she was skinny, she comes to realization that her body is part of who she is and she should be proud of it, but, really, she is so much more than her weight. She demonstrates confidence in her body and in herself as a person. She sets clear examples of the first two components of the female gaze: (1) Women possess the gaze or do the looking, and (2) Women enjoy and control their own bodies and/or sexuality. Chronologically, Ana displays the second component of the female gaze before the first. In fact, in the five and a half minute clip designated for this analysis, she proves her control over her own body multiple times. In the beginning of the clip, she decides to purchase condoms at the drugstore, hinting at the following scene, when Ana and Jimmy sleep together for the first time. She thinks that they will not have anything in common anymore, and that he'll find someone else. "You'll probably end up meeting some skinny girl, right?" she says. • 7. The House On Mango Street Women Essay In the novella, The House on Mango Street, Esperanza tells stories of the many women, young and old, she has met and learned about. Few of these women have been respected by the men in their lives. Most of these men consider women things to possess. Some of these men have their reasons, though inexcusable, for how they act. Very few are kind and considerate towards the ladies in their lives. The men in this novella all have their own stories that are inexplicably intertwined to the suffering of women. Investigating these stories shows that in Esperanza's world, men treat women like property, and men treat women like they are to be used. Women have gender roles forced upon them that they are expected to fulfill, in the novella and in real life, and most times the men in their lives help to push them directly into those expectations. These men are under the belief that that is what women are meant for. The men do not treat women like they should be treated. The men treat women with disrespect by taking control of their lives and shaping those lives into how women are expected to be, and believe women belong to them. The men treat women like objects to fulfill their own desires. The problems between genders in this novella are becoming more addressed in today's society. Women are breaking standards set for them and men are accepting it and encouraging it. Even so, the fact still remains that there are women who can't change their life and men exist who still have such outdated beliefs about women. The House on Mango Street is a great example how women are not to be treated by men. • 8. The Gender Divide Between Men And Women During the Feminist Movement in the late 19th century and present day, leading women in America and all around the world have stood up for the rights of their gender in order to eradicate the social inequalities and stereotypes that have been formulated over hundreds of years to convey the impression that women are the inferior gender. This movement stimulated many ideas on the treatment and perception of women as a gender and came with progress but also with opposition. While many acknowledged the oppression toward women in society, others accepted the divide between men and women as only immutable differences and not prejudice. Although both Jamaica Kincaid, author of "Girl," and Anna Quindlen, author of "Between the Sexes, A Great Divide," agree that there is a great social divide between men and women, Kincaid establishes a demanding, harsh tone in her passage to demonstrate that the gender divide is absolutely unacceptable whereas Quindlen establishes a lighter tone to demonstrate that the gender divide should just be accepted as differences rather than prejudice. Additionally, the two overlapping but contrasting ideas can be attributed to the background of the authors; Quindlen is a white American while Kincaid is Caribbean and from a poor family, thus it is safe to assume that the girl in Kincaid's story is actually Kincaid as a little girl who was perhaps told by her mother to emulate someone like Quindlen, a white woman. • 11. Women 's Beauty : The Toilette Scene Since ancient times, women's beauty has long been a common topic for literature and art. Appreciating women's charming appearances and behaviors is free to talk about both in privacy and public. However, it should be pointed out that as what the painting Admonitions of the Instructress to Court Ladies reflects to people, due to the effect of old Chinese cultures and traditions, women's inner self actually plays a more signifiant role than their external appearances, which echoes on a similar idea from Upanishads that attaining self(atman) is a major goal for people while the body is unreliable and not long lasting. The painting, Admonitions of the Instructress to Court Ladies: The Toilette Scene, is a famous art work created by an outstanding Chinese painter, Gu Kaizhi, in Jin Dynasty(265–420). The original art work is composed of 12 different pieces, but due to careless preservation, only 9 of them remains nowadays, and Thee Toilette Scene is one of the remained. The idea of Admonitions of the Instructress to Court Ladies originates from a poetic text, Nushijian, written by Zhang Hua, a Western–Jin–dynasty court official who intended to utilize this text to teach women basic rules and rituals(Hinsch 51). Therefore, Gu Kaizhi transformed this text into painting to further illustrate and benefit future generations of the virtues that ancient Chinese women should possess in order to be a qualified woman, hold a position in the court, and serve for the empress. • 12. The Role Of Women In House On Mango Street By Sandra Cisneros Mouse traps, they aren't the most pleasant thought but it gets a point across. Tiptoeing and jumping are what people do when attempting to no sett off the mouse traps, so imagine penniless women having to tiptoe around circumstances almost everyday of their lives that would get them sucked into bad situations. In Sandra Cisneros' book, "House on Mango Street", well thought out motifs and symbolisms become very useful in order to convey the expectations of women in a poor community make the women more susceptible to becoming trapped inside this environment. The expectations of the women in "House on Mango Street" repeats throughout the story in the form of shoes. One very prominent vignette is "The Family of Little Feet" where Esperanza, Rachel, and Lucy are all given high heeled shoes to try on, they excitedly decide to walk outside in them because the heels made them feel powerful and mature. The girls walking around doesn't result well due to multiple men sexualizing them though, especially when a man looks at them and scrutinizes their appearance, "Them are dangerous, he says. You girls too young to be wearing shoes like that. Take them shoes off before I call the cops, but we just run" (Cisneros 41). This along with a bum who asks for a kiss and a boy who shouts at them to lead him to heaven, give Esperanza, Lucy, and Rachel a small glimpse of what the men see them as–sexual objects. • 13. Women During The Han Dynasty Women during the Han Dynasty Lessons for Women is a book of conduct written during the Han Dynasty by Ban Zhao (C. 45–120) to advise the women of her family on the proper conduct of a wife. Ancient China around this time was a Confucian state in which the society was control by the belief in order and harmony. The book contains seven chapters that talks about: humility, husband and wife, respect and caution, womanly qualifications, wholehearted devotion, implicit obedience, and harmony with younger brothers– and sisters– in law. This work of literature reflects on how a proper women was to behave obediently to the husband, by being devoted and respectful to avoid humility to herself, her parents and her clan. It gives the readers an idea of the power that men had over women during this time period and the exceptions for both roles of husband and wife. Lessons of women informs the readers that women during the Han Dynasty had no control over their own lives and the philosophy of Confucian had a huge influence on the society's everyday life. Ban Zhao emphasizes the importance of distinctions between men and women, and their separate natures. From the time of birth a woman is taught to be a good wife, she learns how to submit herself to her husband and understands that her sole purpose in life is to serve him. Females may look like a million bucks on Facebook (a social media website), but do they feel like a million bucks? There are many females who pretend to be untroubled on social media so others will not view them as emotionally weak and unstable. "Specifically, [women] are misusing the social media tools given to them and creating false impressions of themselves that are fueling their own insecurities..." (Negroni Screen 2). People will scroll past the woman's picture and assume that the woman has glamourous life. In reality, they are unaware that the woman is pretending to be perfect. Every female is naturally born with flaws. If humanity showed recognition to the women who are satisfied with being themselves then, more women will feel content to accept who they are. The woman behind the picture is in distress. The artist is concerned with the number of women who are in despair but, portraying that they are fine. • 16. Women During The Progressive Era Woman in the progressive era What is a woman's role? Is it to be a housewife and take care of her husband and children? Or is it much more then that. Between the years 1897– 1917 the progressive era came of age. This era not only created rapid economic growth but also created a voice for woman. As woman began to have a voice they were ready to use it and make a change that would affect American history forever. The progressive era was an era of change. The great depression had just ended and people looked to the government to help make things better. During this era the only woman who were working were young unmarried woman. Although they may have had a job, the working conditions in these places were unbearable. The progressive era brought these problems to the attention of the government and started to make some changes. Putting in place inspections and health regulations in factories. These were not the only changes the government ended up making. Throughout American history up until the progressive era a woman's role was in the household. According to Charlotte Perkins Gilman " It is not motherhood that keeps the housewife on her feet from dawn till dark; it is house service....Woman work longer and harder than most men" (Gilman 692). During this time most woman did not have many jobs and those that did have jobs were young and unmarried. The progressive era brought change to this. According to Eric Foner in Give me liberty! • 17. Review Of ' What Women Can Learn From Men ' By Margaret Wente A Review of "What Women Can Learn From Men" By Margaret Wente Margaret Wente's July 2015 Globe and Mail article, "What Women Can Learn From Men" addresses a common phenomenon, the comparison: between men and women. With her article, she hopes to advise women on how they can improve themselves and their lives with simple changes. Furthermore, she wisely chooses to avoid a sexist approach by commending men on their behavioral traits despite her gender. Infact, using logical implications, she portrayed herself as an example rather than offend her audience. Additionally, through evidence, figures, facts and a link, she skillfully supports her theories thus making her article significantly factual and effective. Although Margaret starts by stereotypically generalising men, she depicts some of their great qualities that women can truly learn from. Using different approaches, she portrays women and their thoughts then skillfully explains how they can better themselves by "thinking" like men. Despite how she initially condemned men, she concludes by logically beseeching that man–shaming "has gone far enough" and should stop. Despite being an article in the extensively read Canadian newspaper "the Globe and mail", Margaret's target audience is the broad female population. She therefore uses a different approach, one with less specialized language, as was stated in "Mind Wide Open." The purpose is quite clear: she portrays women's behavioral traits and their thoughts then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Women, Islamic, And Saudi Arabian Women The topic that stood out to me the most would be the impact of ethnicity amongst women. It is amazing how much being a woman and being part of a certain ethnicity can have such an impact on a woman's life. It is already hard enough for woman to been seen as equal, just imagine what it is like being a woman of a particular ethnicity. The two articles that we discussed in class are about Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women. Filipino, Islamic, and Saudi Arabian women share some things in common when it comes to their everyday lives and cultures. Within thePhilippine culture, men and women have very different duties in life. Men are supposed to be the worker of the house and the women stay in and take care of the family. The... Another thing that Filipina woman go through is not having the privileges like other boys, especially their brothers. The author states, "parents seldom allowed their daughters to date, to stay out late, to spend the night at a friend's house, or to take an out of town trip" (Espiritu, p. 16). Therefore, the Filipino girls do not get to experience what it is like to be a teenager. The girls could experience not being able to be social because of their parents keeping them so distanced from the real world. This could damage them when they become adults. Another thing that stood out was the same parents that are stopping their daughter from doing all these things, are not stopping their son, who could be even younger than the daughter. This makes absolutely no sense because why would someone let a younger child do something over the older child? A part of the article that stood out to me was "although many parents discourage or forbid dating for daughter, they still fully expect them to fulfill their traditional roles as women: to marry and have children" (Espiritu, p. 17). This quote shows that Filipino woman do not have choices in life. It is like the parents are being hypocrites because they are telling them not to do one thing but then expect them to have a family. The article by Kelly focused more on life in the court as well as the romantic, sexual, and political lives, or lack thereof, of women during the Renaissance. The article by MacNeil focused on the life of one woman in particular, Isabella Andreini. MacNeil focused more on the arts side of the Renaissance rather than the court, political, or sexual aspects of women. As stated previously, both articles provided interesting insight into the lives on women during the Renaissance, but both articles come to different conclusions and raise different questions after reading them through. Joan Kelly–Gadol wrote her article on whether or not she believes women had a place in the Renaissance or not. It was able to prove that women can have a place in the Renaissance and they can come to power, but they are limited. Women are often labeled as men if their work is in the masculine arts. At the same time, the article also proved that stereotypes and the degrading of women still existed back then. It was very prominent in the scene that Andreini produced. Moving us with their rants and dramatic reactions, these women engulf the audience in overwhelming grief and irresistible pride. Euripides emphasizes these four women to help us understand one of his main themes. Hecuba with her pride, Cassandra with her virginity and uncanny wisdom, Andromache with her misery and heartache, and Helen with her powerful, seductive reasoning all represent superior illustrations of feminism throughout the play. Until she begins to tell her mother how she will try to take revenge for her family does she show pain by saying, "I shall kill [Agamemnon] mother, lay his house as low as he laid ours, make him pay for all he made my father suffer, brothers . . ."(I, i, 367–369). Raving, she prophecies, "If Apollo lives, my marriage will be bloodier than Helen's," and in time we see that she is right with the fall of Greece (I, i, 364–365). She also makes an interesting point on the defeat of Troy. She explains that the Greeks are just there to fight and conquer, and that their families are not there to soften their hearts. The Trojans fight as a family for their people. The Trojans have lost, but they died with great honor trying to save and protect their country and kinsmen. Cassandra refers to those soldiers, her family, who fought with a final divination, "Brothers, in Troy's earth laid, my father, a little time and I am with you. You dead, I shall come to you a victor. Those ruined by my hand who ruined us" (I, i, 469–472). Even though she is portrayed as mad, the evidence of her wisdom, whether it be given to her by the god she has devoted her life, or just insane predictions, shows us that women could be intelligent and know of things to come just as men. Back in 1818, women were all taught to follow the rules that society put on them. They had to be classy and proper at all times or else they were not considered feminine. The same idea still goes on today. We all have to all like the same things and act the same way. It is a shame we have not progressed much in making women and men be treated the same since 1818. Women could take the ad from 1979 and say it is sexist because they are using a woman to try and market a product. It is a very common occurrence to use women in that way because they are using an image of an ideal woman. Putting a strong handsome man in this ad instead of a woman would change the entire dynamic. If that were the case, men would be less inclined to go buy Dr. Pepper because it would make them feel like they were buying the drink to be like the man on the cover. With the ad from 2013, I think the ad makers knew they were going to offend women, but they probably thought that they would take it more of a joke. Is Dr. Pepper really appealing to men here, or are they just having fun and looking for a lot of free media attention? Women being treated less than men is not a funny joke. I think in today's time, those topics should not be joked about because women are treated different from men and this is still a pressing issue. Sadly, this is something society has deemed acceptable, and many young girls are now trying to be what they know as the stereotype of "pretty" and "perfect." Suddenly, it is all that matters and what they want simply is not important, they are not able to be their own kind of beautiful. In her "Prologue", the Wife of Bath points out that there are no women writers and that only men write. Everything described in Janekin's book is written from the men's point of view, and here Alisoun uses a painting as an analogy: "Who painted the leon, tel me who? • 28. Cultural Views Of Women In The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath Women of early to mid 1900's were oppressed by the man's perfect view of what a woman should and should not be. Hastily after they were given the right to vote in 1920, men pressured women to stay in the realm of expertise they had already participated in for centuries, domesticity. Sylvia Plath the writer of, The Bell Jar, uses the life of Esther Greenwood to show how cultural views of women disabled women from reaching their highest abilities. Women who sought a higher education or an occupation above the norm were pitied in society, looked down on for not conforming to the American dream of the "suburb housewife" (Friedan,60). Women of higher positions were judged by their looks instead of the qualifications. Life for women was particularly hard in the 1950's, many women would go about their day drugged with uppers and plaster the fake smiles on their faces just to be favored in society; but the mundanity of daily life dragged on and many women found no challenge or enjoyment in their tasks (Friedan, 62). Men used the pressures of society to oppress women in conforming with the ideal housewife, instead of joining the workforce and creating their own destiny –like the women before they had fought for– they applied themselves to an image created for them by "God" and by "man". Esther's constant struggle to follow the cultural expectations of women, leads her down a path of insanity when she finds herself outcasted because of her desire to be a self–sufficient woman (Plath, ... (pg. 25) Men and women often use their bodies in different ways, this is not breaking news. However, the reasons and consequences behind this difference is important. The situations women will often put themselves in will vary greatly from men because of the perceived abilities of our bodies. Most women would not accept a job on a construction site because of a lack of belief of what the female body is capable of. Similarly, women who apply to these types of jobs are often not hired. When lifting objects, or using force to accomplish a task, we "frequently fail to summon the full possibilities of our muscular coordination, position, poise, and bearing." (pg. 26) This is, in part, because "feminine bodily existence is overlaid with immanence." (pg. 29) Instead of using her whole body, a woman will "concentrate motion in one part of the body alone, while the rest of the body remains relatively immobile." Theme Of Women In The House On Mango Street For decades, the social stereotype of women hindering their rights to stay home and act as the caretaker has been widely accepted in various cultures and civilizations. Today, many individuals fight to renew women's rights and dissolve this stereotype, yet it is still prevalent amongst society. This issue is so relevant that many literary works have incorporated the idea into their theme. Throughout Sandra Cisneros' novel The House on Mango Street, the idea of a woman by the window is repeatedly mentioned and symbolizes the belief that women cannot reach their full potential and are left watching life's possibilities pass them by. This image of a woman by a window is first introduced in the vignette "My Name," however Cisneros integrates this idea in the duration of the novel to the point where it's embedded in the central theme. Esperanza describes her great–grandmother whom she inherited her name as a "wild horse of a woman," (Cisneros 11). The warrior in today 's direct combat roles need to be decisive, mentally and emotionally stable, very physically fit, and the ability to be able to take an enemy combatant's life at any moment. Their is no way around it especially in the workforce. The impact of stereotypes starts at a young age and these impacts stick with them fro the rest of their life. The cause of the impacts determines their career. The effects of stereotypes that women face in society start very early in their childhood. The media plays a big role in this. Miribel Tran the author of an article called The Effect of Social Media in Young Girls talks about how every time agirl opens a magazine, turn on the television or goes on any form of social media there is always a model on there that has been photoshopped to look smaller than she already does. There is always a new product out there to make them look "better" or more "attractive". This makes girls feel like they have to look this way and if they do not they will not be noticed or looked at in a positive way. This causes most little girls to go into depression. Depression leads the little girls getting obese. The obesity makes them feel more worse about them because they think they are even further away from looking like the women they see on social media. This just makes it even more bad because this leads to grades falling in school (Tran ). The falling of their grades affects them in the future because if their grades fall they feel dumb. This makes them think that they will not get into a good college because they feel they are not smart enough for it. This stops girls from pursuing their dreams and affect the type of job they get in the future. The stereotype that men hold the character trait of brilliance and women do not is another big one that affects little girls. It affects most girls at the age of six. In theguardian Nicola Davis talks about a research done by three US Universities about how this stereotype affects girls. They did a research on 400 kids between the ages of five and seven half of them were girls the other half were boys. Out of the 400 kids 96 girls and boys of all three ages were shown ... • 36. Negative Influence on Women in the Media Melanic R.... This article, written by Melanic R. Salome , is about the women's misrepresentation of in media . Salome considers media as an important tool that affects American women in a negative way. Media has become of paramount interest in our lives, despite the fact that its negative influences on us are increasing at a rapid pace. Media promotes unrealistic and unattainable images that result in depression and dissatisfaction among people. Therefore, media reflects the image of society and the way people think about themselves. Moreover, The writer strives to show the portrayal of women as depicted by media, stating that historically women are more likely to suffer from marginalization and stereotyping than men do . She claims that women are mostly represented as sexual objects and marriage oriented. She highlights that it is unfortunate that this marginalization of women is still continuing, but it is being exploited through a different way by media. Women beauty is used in advertisement on purpose to sell products while men are usually represented as elegant leaders and decision makers. Media, according to Salome, tries hardly to convince American society believing in inaccessible and nonsensical goals. The author believes that women should be accepted as they are without being incorporated into the picture of what the ideal women are. Furthermore, she claims that the American society is a society that cares just about appearance as an important part of the human existence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Women 's Allowance Of Women A topic that is becoming more and more prevalent in today 's society is the allowance of women into direct combat roles in our armed forces. Forests densely covered with fog, barren deserts, bomb cratered fields. Those are just a few of the many different types of scenarios encountered by troops in direct combat roles on the modern day battlefield. The warrior in today 's direct combat roles need to be decisive, mentally and emotionally stable, very physically fit, and the ability to be able to take an enemy combatant's life at any moment. Do any of these descriptions accurately match women in today 's military? To allow or disallow women into combat scenarios? Some argue that women 's allowance to fight in direct combat roles is the same as a man 's allowance. Women can try to prove that they are fit to meet the standards to be allowed into direct combat roles, but if they fail it could the unit or group of other soldiers they are with into danger. Soldiers and civilians both agree, that in certain jobs in the military, women can function at the same level as men. The biggest argument about having women fighting with men on the battlefield is there different physical structure, ability to deal with certain emotional and stress situations, susceptibility to injury, and ability to take someones life. The last statement might appear to be a stereotype, saying that most women would not be capable of supporting the rigorous stresses of war–like situations. I think ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Objectification Of Women Essay "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". However there is a well known, well discussed, universal definition of perfection for all women. One that is consistent throughout different areas of the world and different allotments of the human culture. This standard of the ideal woman is based off of not only physical but intellectual standards predominantly in advertising. According to Margaret Atwood in TheFemale Body, a woman's body is used in today's culture "to sell and advertise products". These products vary from "door knockers, bottle openers, clocks with ticking bellies, lampshades, and nutcrackers". By having stores sell these items they are completely promoting the objectification of women to help sell their goods and services which is down right direful. How are women expected to ever be treated equal if business' continue to sell discriminatory product, lessening the view of the female anatomy. Materialistic items are not the only way a female's body is exploited in today's culture. Aside from bottle openers and clocks, women are universally seen as a "renewable" sex symbol The Female Body (pg. 1013 para. 6) especially in magazines. Whether it be death and dying, birth or a transition from puberty to adulthood, every culture has certain rituals they use to christen these changes in social status within a society. A rite of passage is symbolic in how important a change is in the lives of the people who experience them. Status changes such as these are very important in the eyes of their culture and the ceremonies they produce help them retain stability while their society adjust to the changes that are occurring to the individuals. An interesting rite of passage that can be found in many cultures around the world is a young girls transition into womanhood. Two of the cultures that one examined this rite in were the Oglala Sioux of South Dakota, and the Tukuna of the Amazon. With the genocide of the Native Americans, many of the rituals and ceremonies they use have not been seen by outsiders. Information on any ceremony can be hard to find. Fortunately, the Oglala Sioux Wichasa Wakhan, holy man, Black Elk recorded these ceremonies before his death. In the book The Sacred Pipe, Black Elk discusses the seven sacred rites of the Oglala Sioux, one of which is Ishna Ta Awi Cha Lowan, preparing a young girl for womanhood. (Black Elk, 1989).
