Pan Africanism And Rastafarianism
Pan–Africanism encourages the unification all people of African descent. This belief gained
popularity throughout the African diaspora in the 1970's as "one of the manifestations of the Black
Power Movement"(Britannica Academic, Encyclopedia). During the height of his career, Bob
Marley utilized his positive social influence and Rastafarian faith to give a global view of Pan–
African ideals in order to uplift his listeners and spread a message of peace and equality. During the
post Civil Rights era, blacks in the United States had just received rights through the passage of the
1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and the 1968 Fair Housing Act. This federal
legislation ended legal segregation and other discriminations that were deeply entrenched in
American society. By the mid–1960s, Bob Marley "[immersed] himself into the faith by Rastafari"
(bobmarley.com). Rastafarianism is a religion, popular among Black Jamaicans, "[combining]
Protestant Christianity, mysticism, and a Pan–African political consciousness". At this time in his
life, Bob Marley became more conscious about not just only the political issues in Jamaica, but the
political issues and racial issues all over the world.
In 1963 Bob Marley joined local vocal classes where he met Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The men
became friends and formed the iconic reggae music trio, The Wailing Wailers. Reggae music
"evokes a message of universal suffrage," (Reggae As Social Change: The Spread of
Rastafarianism).

Haile Selassie Research Paper
In this wonderful world there are different type of religions and cultures that are all special in their
own way. Some religions that are known across the world are Christianity, Judaism, but most
religions beyond that will sometimes get lost in the eyes of others. Some religions that are huge, but
don't get enough attention unless it negative or over romanced are: Islamic, Buddhism, Hinduism,
Rastafarianism. As an anthropologist having a emic and etic perceptive is needed as to get accurate,
and authentic information, so emic mean looking inside the culture and having a personal
experience with the people; etic means to look from the outside and see how a certain culture

The Movement International Recognition Of The Church Of...
Rastafarianism In the 1930s, right after coronation of Haile Selassie I as emperor of Ethiopia, a
religious following was started in Jamaica known as Rastafari, an Abrahamic belief. The most
famous Rastafari is arguably Bob Marley, whose reggae music gained the Jamaican movement
international recognition. Spiritual and moral traits vary widely within the religion, causing
members to either to see it as a way of life or more as a religion. But what is uniting members across
the world is the messiahship and divinity of the first emperor, Selassie. Rastafarianism does not
really have an organizational structure or leadership even though it recognizes people like Marcus
Garvey, Leonard Howell, Joseph Hibbert, Archibald Dunkley, Mortimer Planno, Vernon Carrington,
Charles Edwards and Peter Tosh. "Many elements of Rastafari reflect its origins in Jamaica along
with Ethiopian culture. Ethiopian Christianity traces its roots to the Church of Alexandria, founded
by St Mark, and its 5th–century continuation in the Coptic Church of Alexandria. Rastafari holds
many Christian beliefs like the existence of atriune God, called Jah, who had sent his divine
incarnate son to Earth in the form of Jesus (Yeshua) and made himself manifest as the divine person
of Haile Selassie I. Rastafari accept much of the Bible, although they believe that its message and
interpretation have been corrupted. "(wikipedia) Members are currently approximately 1 million in
number, all over the world.

Compare And Contrast Rastafarianism And Buddhism
Around the world there are countless religions being practiced, and each retains their own set of
viewpoints on topics discussed throughout history. Today the two religions of focus are
Rastafarianism and Buddhism, and the topics are ecology, sustainability, and the environment.
Whereas Buddhism and Rastafarianism appear quite different in their terms of environmental greed,
they show important similarities in their values on sustainability and the physical environment.
Before discussing their values, a brief history on each religion, as one is widely known while the
other has a much smaller following. Buddhism began with the enlightenment of Buddha, at the early
age of thirty–five he awoke from the sleep of delusion and chose to share his liberation with those
whom he used to suffer with. By the time he passed away, 435 BCE, his teachings termed Dharma
were well known throughout central India. After the rainy season following his death, his disciple
Mahakashyapa gathered his most dedicated followers to establish what they had learned and begin
the widespread dispersion of Buddhism. Sherab Chodzin Kohn, writer for Buddhism for beginners
magazine, states that: "Ananda, the Buddha's personal attendant, recited all the Buddha's discourses
(sutras), naming the place where each was given and describing the circumstances. A monk named
Upali recited all the rules and procedures the Buddha had established for the conduct of monastic
life. Mahakashyapa himself recited the matrika,

Christianity and Rastafarianism-a Discussion of Six...
Christianity and Rastafarianism A Discussion of Six Similarities Christianity and Rastafarianism are
both rooted in Judaism and draw from the Hebrew sacred scriptures. Rastafarianism evolved as a
reaction to the Christianity that was imposed upon African–American slaves and their descendents.
There are several other aspects in which these two religions are similar, the purpose of this paper is
to explore some of those similarities. The Christian religion began around 2000 years ago in Judea,
which is now Israel. Christianity began with Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples. Jesus traveled from
village to village, teaching in the synagogues, and healing those who were sick and suffering. He

Rastafari's believe Tafari Makonnen, who was crowned Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia on
November 2nd, 1930 is the living God incarnate, called Jah. He is the black Messiah that will lead
the world's people of African origin into the Promised Land of full emancipation and divine justice.
This is partly because of his titles King of Kings, Lord of Lords and Conquering Lion of the Tribe of
Judah. These titles match those of the Messiah mentioned in the book of Revelation, in the Christian
New Testament (Rastafari). Second Similarity–The Creation of the World: Just as the Christian
Bible begins with, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth", (Holy Bible) The Holy
Piby, the Rastafarian Bible, begins with, "From the beginning there was God and he spake and all
things were made that are made". Both of these sacred texts go on to state that God made man for
his glory and then made woman for man, God called the man Adam and the woman Eve. (Holy
Piby) Both of the sacred texts also agree that God rested on the seventh day and said that men
should also use the seventh day as a day of rest. Third Similarity–Worship Practices: Christian
worship centers on meetings or services held on Sunday. These services consist of Biblical readings,
communion, and music either with or without instrumental accompaniment, prayer, a teaching from
the Bible in the form of a sermon and a collection of tithes. Other forms of worship, such

Jamaica: History, Government, People, Religion
Jamaica is a tropical island, located in the heart of the Caribbean Sea. Around the coastlines are
beautiful beaches with crystal clear blue–green water. In some respects, this is the majority of what
people know about Jamaica. In this orientation text you will better understand Jamaica's history, the
people who live there, the many different religions, geography, and governments that have ruled the
land.
The land of Jamaica is very small. The total land mass area of the island is 4,243 square miles.
Stretching 146 miles from east to west and at its furthest points north to south, approximately 51
miles (Encyclopedia Americana, 2001, P 670). Within this area, the land is ... Show more content on

By the early 18th century, with the peace treaty in place, Jamaica began to build vast amounts of
sugar plantations. Sugar became the main export to England. Second, and not far behind, was slave
trade. Jamaica's location in the heart of the Caribbean Sea made it an ideal port for harboring slaves
until they were needed to sell. This enabled Jamaica to be one of the British crown's most lucrative
assets (Encyclopedia Americana, 2001, P 673).
Things changed with the British Parliament's abolishment of the slave trade in 1833. Freed slaves
became independent farmers or employees of surviving sugar plantations. The government also
changed from an elected British assembly to a governor–controlled crown colony enacted in 1866
and run for 75 years. During this political change, sugar industry slowed and the emergence of the
banana industry became Jamaica's main export (Encyclopedia Americana, 2001, P 673). Jamaica
formed a two party system in its changes. The People's National Party (PNP) and Jamaican Labor
Party (JLP) would alternate rule for the 40 years. In 1953, Jamaica inaugurated a ministerial system
of government. Within this system the Federation of the West Indies was created in 1958, with
Jamaica as its largest member. Jamaica's true independence came four years later with its
withdrawal from the federation.

The Modern Culture And Lifestyle Of Rastafarian Culture
The Modern Culture and Lifestyle of Rastafari The modern culture of Rastafarianism is extensive.
Rastafarian culture has many aspects of its being. This makes Rastafarianism a tough task for those
new to it. There are many Rastafarian rules for both men and women. For example, Rastafarian
women are called "sistren" and they have to abide by more rules than men. These rules consist of
language restrictions and dress codes. Women are prohibited from swearing, saying anything
sexually suggestive, and arguing. Sistren do not wear pants. Rastafarian women can only wear
colors on the red, yellow and green spectrum for those are considered to be the colors of Babylon.

They also have a neutral stance; they believe that money is neither good or evil. Rastas know that
money is not life. One big aspect of Rastafarian culture is that they do not eat meat. Some even
choose to cook without salt. Rastas aim for an abundance of flavor in their cooking without having
to use meat. Some Rastas eat fish, but it has to have scales, but some choose to not eat meat at all.
Rastas cooking often includes plant based protein using greens and peanuts. They believe that their
food should have color, texture and flavor. Rastas believe that your body is a temple and they stick
to an Ital diet. A lot of the early belief system of Rastafarianism was built off of hate for white
people and what was have done to the black nation as a whole. Now Rastas stand against hate,
jealousy, envy, deceit, craftiness, treachery, etc. Another belief that has changed over the time is that
Rastas believed that Haile Selassie was god, but now most of the Rastafarian community know that
there is a god besides him. They now call Selassie the second coming of

A Sociological View of Rastafarianism
Organized religion is a duality between the religion and the church which represents it. Sometimes
the representation of the religion is marred and flawed to those who view it because of the
bureaucracy contained within. Unknown to those who gaze upon the dissolved morals and values of
what is perceived to be the contradiction known as modern religion, it was never intended to be this
way. Most religions started off as a sect, a minor detail on the fringes of the society it never wanted
to represent. Rastfarianism is such a sect. The differences between Rastafarianism and a normal
"mainstream" religion are numberless, including: no set membership, no authoritative leader, no
offices of authority, no trained clergy and no involvement with ... Show more content on

Rastafarianism was more than a religion to the people of Jamaica, it was a hope. It was their escape
from the the rational everyday world. This theodicy of suffering, in which the underprivileged and
underrepresented Jamaicans believed, was compensation for the deplorable state in which they
found themselves. The Rastafarian way of living and their everyday activities began as a deviant
social behavior, but rather was a routinization of the masses into one cohesive unit, following the
same general creed under different principles. This point can be seen most specifically in the
modern Rastafarian hairstyles. In "traditional Rastafarianism" most Rastas do not cut their hair but
allow it to grow naturally long matted strands or locks. These locks are in accordance with the
Leviticus 21:5: They shall not make baldness upon their head (Johnson–Hill 25). But in today's
Rastafarianism, their are men who will not grow facial hair or locks in accordance to their position
in the work place and in society, but still believe in the faith of and consider themselves a part of the
Rastafarian religion. This process of electing points on a subject in which a followers ideas converge

Reggae: The Music of Protest Essay
There are several theories about how the word reggae originated. The first theory claims that the
word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by
Toots and the Maytals. Some believe that the word is originated from Regga, the name of a Bantu–
speaking tribe on Lake Tanganyika. Others say that it is a corruption of the word streggae, which is
Kingston street slang for prostitute (The Origins of Ska …,n.d.). On the other hand, Bob
Marley claimed that the word was Spanish in origin, meaning "the king's music."
Veteran Jamaican studio musicians offer the simplest, and probably the most logical, explanation.

Many reggae historians claim that the founders of ska music are legendary producer Prince Buster
and Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. While they were looking for new sounds to thrill
Jamaican youth they changed the emphasis of the R&B from the first and third beats in the bar
to the second and fourth, creating the offbeat style that became the fulcrum of Jamaican music from
then on. By 1962 Jamaica was self–governing and ska was said to reflect the aspirations of the
newly liberated masses. In Jamaica, it is said that in mid 1960s summer the weather was too hot and
people refused to dance to up–tempo music like ska and this situation leaded to slow the tempo of
music so a new style of music was emerged, rock steady. However this is not simply the case, in
fact, the reason behind slowing down the tempo can be related with the disappearance of hopes to
independent future of Jamaica. Rock steady simply can be defined as; half–speed ska with the
trombone replaced by piano and prominent bass. (Rock Steady,n.d.). This short lived music
embedded to lyrics social themes and was a step to transit to reggae.
Reggae evolved from the roots of music styles mentioned above and the lyrics weighted more on
politics that addressed social and economical injustice. It also drew from folk music, Pocomania
church music,

Rastafari Research Paper
There are 3 main orders of Rastafari today. The oldest is the Nyahbinghi order. They focus on
proclaiming Emperor Selassie and his incarnation. The second order is the Bobo Ashanti. They
believe in "black supremacy and that there should be repatriation of all black people to Africa"
(Jamicans). They are called Bobo dreads because they have big dreads and they wrap their heads
with turbans. They dress in long, colorful clothes, and they live away from other Rastafarian groups.
They do not live like others of the Jamaican lifestyle but instead, follow a very Jewish based life.
They only smoke marijuana as a form of worship. The last order is the "Twelve Tribes". This is
made of twelve houses that are seen as the twelve sons of Jacob. The Twelve Tribes are organized
by birth month. Music is a big part of the Rastafari movement today. Ska music originated in
Jamaica in the early 1960s. It's sound is a combination of Jamaican folk music and upbeat drums
with a hint of jazz and soul music. In the 60s Ska was the main type of Music in Jamaica. It was
faster paced, up beat music for dancing, that would later bleed into the Uk and USA with a punk
twist. Ska led to the main style of music associated with Rastafarianism. ... Show more content on

Reggae is a music genre that evolved from the Jamaican music style called ska, and was influenced
by American rhythm and blues. Reggae contains many references Rastafarianism, which many
consider the result of Bob Marley's practice of integrating reggae with Rastafarian ideology. This
paper serves to examine reggae, with special emphasis on a lyric analysis of Jamaican reggae band
Bob Marley and the Wailers. The major question this paper addresses the social context that led to
the dominance of social criticism in the lyrics of reggae songs, the importance and significance of
Rastafarianism, as well as how reggae has transformed and spread across the world.

The context of deindustrialization that gave birth to American hip hop is comparable to that of the
community of marginalized poor Blacks in ghetto Trenchtown in Jamaica. Hip hop was able to
replicate and reimagine the grievances of urban life and symbolically appropriates urban space, and
give disadvantaged young Black youth a voice to vent their frustrations (Rose, 1994). The tensions
and contradictions in public urban landscape during a period of substantial transformation in New
York and attempts to seize the shifting urban terrain are found within hip hop's rap lyrics. As a
result, rap lyrics directly related to urban deindustrialization of the 1970s, the postindustrial urban
landscape in 1980s, and impact of all these social pressures on the Black communities. Hip hop's
emergence entails several Afro–diasporic forms, traditions, and practices, and rap is form of protest
(Rose, 1994). Police brutality, racism, and harassment make up the political core of male rapper's
social criticism. This strongly parallels the social function of reggae lyrics.
Rose (1994) talks about the long history of Black cultural subversion and social critique in music
and performance, and the concept of the "hidden transcript". In social conditions in which direct
attacks on authoritative groups are unwise, oppressed people may use music to mock those in power,
to express rage, and to produce fantasies of subversion (Rose,

The Origins of the Rastafarian Movement Essay example
The Origins of the Rastafarian Movement
Rastafarianism is a fascinating world religion that began in the 1930s in Jamaica. This movement
was set forth to make the black population not to feel oppressed to the whites. In this movement the
culture of a Rastafarian spread, but what the people outside of this culture enjoyed the most from a
Rastafarian is reggae. This brought about many singers, but the main one was Bob Marley.
"Rastafarianism is a politico – religious movement that developed in Jamaica in the 1930s and has

Garvey was important to the Rastafarian movement for three reasons: he founded the Universal
Negro Improvement Association (UNIA); he founded a steam ship company called the Black Star
Line; and he promoted the "Back – to Africa" movement. Although in his life time Garvey didn't
accomplish many practical things, he is still consider to be a hero among the Rastafarians.
In 1917, a year after Marcus Garvey arrived in the United States of America he founded the
Universal Negro Improvement Association (Davis 66). The origin of the UNIA was "...originally as
a fraternal organization, later remolding it to become the organized vehicle for the redemption of
blacks through repatriation to Africa" (Davis 66). When Garvey was in New York he started a
newspaper called "The Negro World." Garvey's motto for his newspaper is "One Aim, One God,
One Deststst ack in the United States. The years to follow Garvey got convicted for mail fraud and
tax evasion, and sent to a federal prison in 1925 (Davis 68). Garvey spent two years in jail and them
was deported to Panama. This meant that the S.S. Frederick Douglass went bankrupt and the "Back

until his death in 1940. Marcus Garvey died of pneumonia in England (Davis 69).

While Jews are still waiting for the messiah, Rastas believe that the messiah has already come (and,
unfortunately, gone) in the form of the last Emperor of Ethiopia, His Imperial Majesty, Haile

knows not whither he is drifting. But he must realise that the solution of his present difficulties and
guidance for his future action is the Bible. Unless he accepts with clear conscience the Bible and its
great message, he cannot hope for salvation. For myself, I glory in the Bible."– Selassie I
Emperor Haile Selassie is a direct descendant of King Salomon and the Queen of Sheba; not
surprisingly the African people of the Caribbean looked to Selassie as their savior. They were taken
from their motherland, Africa, in times of slavery and sought repatriation. Their situation made
belief in a white god unrealistic. Selassie I was their Savior. It was on the day of November 2, 1930,

There are a few main beliefs that can be described as being truly Rastafarians, They are the
following!
Haile Selassie is the living God. All true Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie, the emperor of
Ethiopia, is the true and living God, at least for the black race. One member of the Rastafarian
Repatriation Association it explained this way: We know before that when a king should be crowned
in the land of David's throne, that individual would be Shiloh, the anointed one, the Messiah, the
Christ returned in the personification of Rastafari. He (Ras Tafari) is the "Ancient of Days" (The
bearded God). The scripture declares that "the hair of whose head was like wool (matted hair),
whose feet were like unto burning brass" (i.e., black skin). The scripture declares that God hangs in
motionless space surrounded with thick darkness (hence a black man).

The People Believe About Rastafarians
Despite what many people believe about Rastafarians, there are many misunderstandings. Many are
set on calling any person that has dreadlocks, or anyone who lives away from the Rasta society.
Reggae musicians, weed smokers and Jamaican lingo talkers are in the make beliefs of the
Rastafarians. Clearly those exterior references only create a more confusing understanding of
Rastafarians. For anyone to call themselves Rasta, one must know everything about their culture.
Unlike other religions where all one has to do is accept whatever that religion says without study,
one must study the doctrine, the diet, the laws and the strict codes that obey to the Rasta faith. It is
seen as a way of life rather than just another religion. Since each ... Show more content on

Garvey's dream of a return to Africa became the Rastafarian dream as well, and some Rastafarians
have indeed settled in Ethiopia, Ghana, and Zaire. One of the early impacts who paved the way for
the rise of this cult was Marcus Garvey. Garvey lived in New York City, and believed that the black
man would never receive fair treatment in a white man's world. He then organized a "back–to–
Africa" movement that attracted thousands. Which were followers among the poor blacks of certain
large–city urban areas. Garvey was convicted of mail fraud, and spent time in prison. When he
finally returned to his native Jamaica in 1927, Garvey allegedly "prophesied" that a black king
would be crowned in Africa. He also stated through that monarch freedom for dark–skin people
would be realized eventually. Garvey himself never joined the succeeding religious movement that
became known as Rastafarianism. Garvey was even critical of Haile Selassie for leaving Ethiopia
during the time of the Italian Fascist occupation. Entirely too many people are caught up on the
concept of whether Tafari Makonnen, also known as His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, was
Christ, and whether he was or was not the returning Messiah in the flesh. To many people, it is
necessary to belittle King Selessie's role and

African-based Spiritual Outlook: Rastafarianism Essay
Rastafarianism is an African–based spiritual outlook that emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s. It is
considered as a religion by few, but by many people it is considered as "a way of life" because it is
not very organized. In 1927, Marcus Garvey who is an Afrocentric, black political activist, made a
prophecy that his race will be emancipated after a black king is crowned. Three years later, in 1930
Haile Selassie was crowned as king in Africa. Selassie was later declared as the savior by four
Jamaican ministers. Rastafarians believe that Haile Selassie is the messiah, who they refer to as
"Jah" or God. They believe that one day he will lead them to the Promised Land. Although, Selassie
died in 1975, his death is not accepted by many due to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They celebrate days such as, Selassie's coronation day (November 2), Selassie's birthday (July 23),
and Garvey's birthday (August 17). Rastas also consider Selassie's visit to Jamaica in 1996, a
celebration, for which they call, Grounation Day (April 21). They also celebrate the Ethiopian New
Year which falls on September 11, and the Orthodox Christmas on January 7. Many Rastafarians
limit their diet to what they view as "pure food", which does not include any additives like artificial
coloring, flavoring, and preservatives. Their diet is called I–tal, which means clean and natural.
Most of these followers are vegetarian but some eat only certain types of fish. All the meals
prepared by Rastafarians do not include any salt, and they consume very large amounts of
vegetables, fruits, and fruit juice. Furthermore, coffee, milk, alcohol, and drugs (except for Ganja)
are avoided. Ganja is a strain of Marijuana viewed as a spiritual purifier, for which they believe
clears the mind and soul. Smoking Marijuana is very common, although, it is not required. In
addition, Rastafarians view Marijuana as a religious herb, because they interpret verses from the
Bible in a way to regard it as sacred. "He causeth the grass for the cattle, and herb for the services of
man." (Psalm 104:14), is an example of a verse that regards Marijuana as a holy herb. Since the
Ganja is a ritualized act, a prayer is often said before Marijuana is smoked. The prayer is "Glory be

On July 19, 1992, Buju Banton made headlines when his self–produced single "Boom Bye Bye"

into the biggest controversy of his career thus far. After hearing the lyrics of the song the Gay and

Standing Up For The Genre Of Music: Reggae
As Bob Marley would say, "Get up and stand up for your rights." People who do not understand or
listen to reggae judge it without knowing anything about it. "Reggae is something potheads listen
to... Reggae just talks about weed... Reggae makes people rebellious... Reggae is just made by
Rastafarian artists." In this particular case, I'm going to stand up for the genre of music, reggae. First
and foremost, reggae is not about weed. As some artists do bring up in their music about smoking
and weed, reggae is known for their peaceful and loving lyrics. Matter of fact, Alborosie made a
song name, "No Cocaine" to show how some artists feel about drugs. So ALL songs are about
drugs? Eventually, when reggae was a new genre of music it was becoming popular around the
world for its lyrics explaining political problems and civil rights movement. Now being the ... Show

Fun fact: reggae artists are Jewish, Christians, Buddhists, Muslims and more. Now, for all the people
discriminating... they can possibly be discriminating their "own kind" which is hypocritical. What I
think about this is that any religion has to accept their peers or anyone that crosses their paths, so
why do they still do it? Reggae artists are all discriminated by their music and how they look.
Reggae is about loving yourself for who you are and expressing yourself, so of course reggae artists
are free spirited. Every religion in my opinion should be free spirited and accept everyone for how
they are because this is a world full of different kinds of beliefs and looks. This genre is what
exactly interprets what I'm talking about, especially how there's more to it like a religion. As the
reggae artist Lucky Dube said in his song, "Nobody knows what is right and nobody knows what is
wrong. The black man says it's a white man and the white man says it's a black man, Indians says it's
coloured and coloured says it's everyone, racial

Abstract This paper will look and examine four diverse faiths: Christianity, Buddhism,
Rastafarianism and Islam spiritual perspective on healing. In Christianity, prayer is a way that a
person can stay healthy physically, mentally and spiritually. Health is viewed by having a strong
spiritual relationship with the Lord and living one's life by the word of God. Buddhist need a
balance of health both mentally and physically in order to achieve optimal health. They way that
they are able to restore health would be by practicing healthy dietary habits or meditation.

Health care and Christian belief go hand in hand. One of the most crucial components in healing is
prayer. The Christians hold prayer in very high regard. They feel that prayer has the ability to make
them better. In the book James 5:14–15(English Standard Version) it states, "Let him call for the
elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up"(Biblegateway,
2001). Along with prayer, the bible mentions many ways that a person can stay healthy physically,
mentally and spiritually. Ultimately, the way to stay healthy is by having a strong spiritual
relationship with the Lord and living one's life by the word of God.
Buddhism
The Buddhist has a different holy book then the Christian faith. There sacred book is called
Tripitaka. This holy book mentions that the only way to be truly healed is to be healthy in mind and
body. Western medicine focuses on curing symptoms to treat medical problems, but the Buddhist see
this only as a short term fix. In order for one to be healed one must also treat "the spiritual aspect of
the disease and its mind–based causes and remedies must be the primary considerations"(Buddhism,
Medicine, and Health, n.d.). Buddhist feel that possible reasons for illness or disease would be " 1)

thought of the Rasta movement and the colors green, yellow and red. I thought of a symbol being
abused to justify the smoking of cannabis. But if I was to tell you that Bob Marley may be one of the
most influential political activists of all time. Bob Marley was born in 1945 in Rhoden Hall of
Jamaica, after his parent separation he moved to West Kingston with his mother. West Kingston is
where the story begins for his love of music, which would have implications all around the world.
Marley's mother moved to Delaware, after a lengthy stay with her Marley returned to Jamaica and
converted from Christianity to Rastafarianism. Marley's presence can be felt in many platforms but
his music was source of inspiration and awareness for poverty, racism and colonialism (the policy or
practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers,
and exploiting it economically). The word Jah is used quite frequently in Marley's music that refers
to the black messiah whom they believe to be Haile Selassie who was the emperor of Ethiopia. The
poverty and hardship of West Kingston was the core influence for his music and the similarities of
trials West Kingston had linked the message to many people across the world. Bob Marley spoke on
the socioeconomic differences along with the influence of different ethnic backgrounds. Marley will

Rastafarianism Rastafarianism began as a religion of the dispossessed. In 1930, a prophecy of
deliverance was fulfilled for Jamaica's slum–dwellers and rural poor. Ethiopia symbolized Africa

Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. Emperor Selassie claimed to be a direct descendent of King
Solomon. Many Jamaicans were waiting for a black messiah. Selassie, who at his coronation was
proclaimed Negusa Negast (King of Kings), and whose imperial name meant "Power of the Holy

In the present, Rastas feel blacks are held down by poverty, illiteracy, inequality, and trickery by the
white man. To stand up against this Babylon, Rastas want to remind blacks of their heritage.
"Heaven on earth", in Rastafarian belief, is in Africa and especially Ethiopia. There's no afterlife. A
black Exodus to Ethiopia will occur in the future. This Exodus will begin after a signal from Jah.
This means that Rastafarians are very focused on any news from Ethiopia. As a result, Jamaican
blacks have looked more deeply into their African heritage. Red, gold, green, and black are
Rastafarian colors. Red stands for Church Triumphant, which is the Church of the Rastas. It also
stands for the blood of martyred Rastas. Gold represents the wealth of the homeland. Green
symbolizes the beauty and vegetation of the Ethiopia, the "promised land." Black is used to
represent the African people. "He causeth the grass for cattle and the herb for the service of man,"
Psalm 104:14. Rastas use this scripture and others as the basis for their use of "ganja." Regarded as
"wisdomweed," Rasta leaders urge that "ganja" be smoked by followers as a religious rite and aid to
meditation. A potent strain of "ganja" or marijuana grows in abundance on Jamaica. It grows wild,
providing a good supply for Rastas spiritual and medicinal purposes. Rastas eat I–tal food. I–tal

Garveyism and Rastafarianism Essay
Garveyism and Rastafarianism
I. Introduction
In the twentieth century, two movements have emerged out of Jamaica in protest of black oppression
and slavery, both mental and physical. The first to evolve was Garveyism, founded by Marcus
Garvey, and was born in the aftermath of the First World War.
Rastafarianism was the second movement to emerge, lead by Leonard Howell during the depression
years of the 1930's. Garveyism and Rastafarianism are both resistance movements based on the
same ideal: consciousness and essentialism of Africa and its descendants. The founding brethren of
the Rastafari movement were Garveyites themselves, although not members of the Universal Negro
Improvement Asscioation (UNIA), they agreed with and defended ... Show more content on

Garvey's aim was to recontextualize particular aspects of seeming irreconcilable systems of
Marxism/Leninism, monarchism, and even of National Socialism for the African of Africa American
experience (Zips, 224). Garvey did not feel restricted by established political ideologies, instead he
felt free to pick out the best attributes of every government. Ultimately, Garveyism hoped to develop
the African continent into a modern network of nations, modeling it after the United States and
Western Europe (Lewis, 146).
Garvey established the UNIA in Jamaica in the year 1914, two years later he left for the United
States in order to gain more momentum for his movement and spread the African unity he had
started in Jamaica. Before leaving Jamaica, Garvey made a prophecy of sorts to his followers: "Look
into Africa for the crowning of a black king. He shall be the Redeemer" (Barrett, 67). From this
prediction stems most of the discrepancy between Garveyites and Rastafarians, something I will
discuss later in this paper.
The four main themes that the Garvey movement was built upon were 1) Africa for Africans at
home and abroad, 2) unity, 3) self–reliance, and 4) retaining their black pride in the presence of
whites (Chevannes, 95). Garvey brought this ideology with him to the United States where he
founded an American branch of the UNIA in 1917 and furthered his initiatives

There are many similarities between Bob Marley's songs and the Biblical book of Exodus. Bob
Marley's songs "Exodus" and "Africa Unite" connect his tribulations and dissatisfaction with his life
with the Biblical book of Exodus while his seemingly aloneness and his tribulations throughout his
life seem to connect with Moses. The Biblical book of Exodus begins more than 400 years after
Joseph; his brothers and the pharaoh he once served have all died. Egypt is under a new leadership
that is threatened by Jacobs's descendants. The new leaders embark on a crusade to subjugate the
Israelites, forcing them into slavery and eventually declaring that all Hebrew boys must be killed at

The pillar of cloud guided them during the day and by fire at night. They headed west toward the
sea. The pharaoh ended up chasing them, so Moses parted the sea and he and his people walked
past. Once the pharaoh and his soldiers were in the walls, Moses let the walls go and drown the
pharaoh and his army.
After witnessing the miracle, the people decided to trust Moses. Their optimism was brief, and the
people soon began to worry about the shortage of food and water. God responded by sending food
and water from the Heavens. He sent the people manna, which is a sweet bread–like substance.
Even though Bob Marley seems to reference the bible, his religion was officially Rastafarian.
Rastafarianism is a religion that is indigenous to Jamaica and is heavily influential on reggae
culture. Rastafarianism is a hybrid religion that combines Christianity, mysticism, and Black
Nationalism. Rastafarianism is of both colonial and postcolonial experiences. Rastafarianism
developed in the 1920s and 30s in Jamaica while being surrounded with depression, racism,
hierarchy discrimination and poverty. The Rastafarianism message was that of black pride which
described freedom from oppression and the hope of returning to Africa one day.
Rastafarianism began with Marcus Garvey who was a black, Jamaican who led a "back to Africa"
movement. Garvey's beliefs were that Africans were the true Israelites and have been exiled to
Jamaica.

Bob Marley Research Paper
In popular culture, Bob Marley is arguably the figure most associated with Rastafarianism– a
cultural and spiritual movement with its roots in Africa. At the center of their doctrine is the belief
that black people are descended from the early Israelites, but they were exiled for their sins (De
Freitas). The Rastafarian faith maintains that a king with the power of God will emerge out of
Ethiopia, and that all members of the faith will return to their spiritual home (De Freitas). In 1930,
there was a "biblical enthronement of Ras Tafari Makonnen ... as His Imperial Majesty, Emperor
Haile Selassie I, King of King[s], Lord of Lords, and Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah"

According to Steffens, "Marley would say, 'Everywhere I go in the world today, people ask me to
explain the doctrine. If you guys can't come to any general conclusion among yourselves, how am I
supposed to put this idea forth to the world?'" He struggled with the faith at times. Many followers
of the Rastafari faith, including Marley, maintain strict dietary regulations and wear dreadlocks,
avoiding meat (especially pork), alcohol, and food of unknown sources (De Freitas). Rastafarians
wear dreadlocks as a sign of their heritage, religious commitment, and their rejection of "wider
society they regard as Babylon" (Homiak). Most likely the most prominent image associated with
Rastafarianism, the smoking of cannabis is a part of their spiritual experiences. There are no strict
rules regarding the use of marijuana, but "the overuse of it might turn into an end in itself–" so it is
to be used with caution (De Freitas). Ending one's life would be against the wholeness of the group;
the main concept of Rastafarianism is the process of knowing one's self, and in turn, knowing Jah
(God). According to the principles of Rastafari, all people are one people, and all people are

The two religions of Rastafarianism and Judaism embody many of the same characteristics, as well

In the Jewish religion, Judaism is not only obtained through conversion but mainly through our

How Marley's Music Changed Society
The paper discusses how Marley's music changed society by mainstreaming the ideas of black
resistance, social justice, racial equality, and anti–colonialism to the baby–boom generation and
generations endlessly onward. The paper will outline the historical background of reggae as well as
the social cause to which it became attached by the work of Marley. The paper submits that reggae,
ultimately, became the chief means of expressing the angst and dislocation felt by many within the
African Diaspora. Finally, the paper will offer a critical analysis of one of Marley's works, "I Shot
the Sheriff", and will explain why this signature work is a classic instance of reggae speaking out
against injustice and the prevailing power structure. We learn from looking at the literature that
modern–day Reggae had its wellsprings in the African–American soul music of the 1950s and
1960s. The insistent, off–beat rhythmic pattern of soul music became a feature of reggae in the late–
1960s and early 1970s. However, the aforementioned pattern mostly appeared in the form of the
trade–mark galloping backbeat of ska, which was a tip–beat and dance–oriented predecessor of
reggae. Ska had a limited expressive range and its galloping speed needed to be slowed down if it
was to enjoy a larger audience. Fortunately, it did slow down and, by the end of the 1960s,
something known as "Rock Steady" was beginning to surface (Anderson, 206–208). "Rock steady,"
for all intents and purposes, was what reggae

Reggae as a Means of Social Transformation Through The Voices of the Rastafari
Jamaica, the third largest Caribbean island is not only home to tropical weather and picturesque
landscapes, but also to social unrest and perhaps some of the most rebellious people. Since its
existence, this nation has seen a series of revolutions and riots in efforts to reverse the unjust social,
economic, and political conditions. The most influential of these revolutionary efforts contributed to
the formation of Jamaica's very own religious movement, Rastafarianism. With oppression serving
as one of the driving forces for the Rastafari Movement, it is understandable why its followers are so
adamant about professing their ideologies, beliefs and practices. The central language used to
express the grievances of Rastafarians is known globally as the music genre, Reggae. It is not
merely coincidental that the country pregnant with such radical motives also gave birth to its own
music brand. By examining the music of artists such as Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Luciano and
more, we can deduce that Reggae music served and continues to serve as the most prominent
vehicle for the spread of Rastafarianism.
The Rastafari Movement emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s out of desires to defeat the crippling
British colonial culture and to establish an identity based on the reclamation of African heritage. The

My World Issues Class Analysis
Throughout the course of my World Issues class, numerous themes and concepts were explored
spanning across entire time periods and geographical locations. The first exercise completed in class
was a visual representation of the connections between all themes categorized under the umbrella
term: "world issues." This included diversity, economic disparity, environmental issues, global
health, nutrition/food security, accessibility, human rights, peace/war, media, education, and identity.
Each of us found connection between every one of these themes; they are simultaneously
independent and interconnected– a change in any sector can affect all of the others. One major
connection I found in the course was the concept of citizens clinging to social status quo and the
resulting political/interpersonal violence due to that close–minded rejection of difference. For
example, violent acts by Buddhist monks in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of these issues can be boiled down go a couple major themes– that of power politics, identity
politics, religious differences, and how all of these themes are affected through the lense of the
media. One key example we talked about was the relationship between Buddhists from Thailand.
The deeply rooted history of Buddhism in Thailand can be linked with the political struggles
between that of communism and capitalism. Certain Buddhist monks like Phra Kittiwut Tho argue
that the murder of communists would not violate any of the nonviolent ideologies of Buddhism.
This has an interesting link with the historical perception of Christianity in the 1100's around the
first crusade when The Pope argued that war and killing were acceptable under theological terms if
it was against non–christian people. The conflict in Thailand demonstrates to me that, even though
religion and politics might be somewhat separated, there is an inherent link when pushed hard

The Impact Of Rastafari On The Late 1920s And Early 1930s...
Rastafari Rastafari is a young religion that was established in Jamaica in the 1930s, which originated
from Marcus Garvey's movement in the late 1920s against the oppression of the African Race.
Rastafari advanced into a religion right after the crowning of Halie Selassie I as the emperor of
Ethiopia in 1930. There are approximately 1 million followers all around the world today. There are
multiple branches inside of Rastafari, each of them carrying similar customs, beliefs, and views.
Rastafarianism commenced in the Jamaican Slums in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Rastafari
started out as a movement in the 1920s led by Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican publisher, journalist, and
entrepreneur. Garvey led the organization known as the Universal Negro Improvement Association,
whose intentions were to unify blacks with their land of origin. Garvey preached "Look to Africa
where a black king shall be crowned, he shall be your Redeemer." (BBC) This statement later
became the basis of the Rastafari movement. When Emperor Halie Selassie I crowned himself
emperor of Ethiopia in 1930, Rastafarians saw the crowning as the fulfillment of Garvey's prophecy.
In fact, Rastafari takes its name from the Emperor's original name, Tafari. (Biography). Rastafari
followers believed that Emperor Halie Selassie was the "Black Messiah," Jah Rastafari, who is a
figure of salvation. Jah Rastafari was thought to redeem blacks from white suppressors, reunifying
them with Africa, their native homeland.

Misconceptions of Rastafarianism
Sam Cook 12/1/2012 Rhetoric of Reggae Tuna (Professor Snider) Common Misconceptions of the
Rastafarian People When an average person hears the word Rastafarianism, several things come to
mind. Some examples would be the stereotypical images of dreadlocks (long braids or natural locks
of hair), the smoking of ganja (marijuana), the busy streets of Trenchtown, and the reggae rhythms
of the one and only Bob Marley. Unfortunately, those things are not necessarily the makings of what
truly embodies the Rastafari culture. With the growing international popularity of reggae in the
1970's, the Rastafarian movement gained headway in Jamaica. Yet this came as both a blessing and
curse for the Rastafarian, because it created ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite Rasta's believing in different gods, it is looked down upon to judge another Rastafari for the
I's belief system or reasoning behind it. (Brodber) We are all one. The concept of InI is that
Rastafarian's are walking in step with their creator. Next on the list and created by the majority is
that Rastafari is a cult religion. First of all, Rastafari is not a cult. According to www.merriam–
webster.com, a cult is "1.) A formal religious veneration." and "2.) A system of religious beliefs and
ritual." If someone were to say that Rastafarianism is a cult based on the first definition, then the
same assumption would therefore have to be made across the board about all organized religions.
Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly than the first definition, "Rastafari is not a religion. It
is a spiritual livity." (Bisnauth 195–199) Livity refers to the energy or life force that flows through
all living things. (Tyehimba Salandy) My favorite is that all Rastafarians are from Jamaica. Though
the origins of the livity were formed in Jamaica and focused on repatriation and reconnecting with
Africa, I–thiopia, the motherland of all human creation, not all Rastafarians are Jamaican. (Hausman
and Marley) There are Rastafarian people of all colors, backgrounds, and races. Rastafarians live
worldwide. Even though Rastafari seeks to transcend race, and racial

Rastafarianism And Alcohol Use
Catholicism, Rastafarianism, Scientology, and Mind Altering Substances.
Drugs are used everyday in society, from medicine, to recreational use, they are all around us in our
everyday lives. Some are considered to be bad, and dangerous, and yet others save lives, so who
decides which ones we should, or should not, use? Besides the obvious answer of not using the ones
that have very high chances of killing you, such as heroin, meth, etc..., But what about the ones that
do not have a tendency to kill, are very hard to overdose on, and for the most part are Scientifically
safe to the human brain? In most cases all drug use is frowned upon in the two out of three religions
(Catholicism, and Scientology) and marijuana is the only drug mentioned in ... Show more content

Like Catholicism they tend to have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to recreational drug use,
and even have their own rehab program developed specifically targeted at youth. They do believe in
the use of medicine, when prescribed by a doctor, and will rely on medical advice given to them by
a doctor as well. Smoking and drinking have no prohibition on them, as long as they are used in
moderation, just like catholicism and they believe that it is important for one to enjoy themselves
every now and then, if that means drinking so be it. However it is commonly believed that
Scientology tends to send false messages about their actual beliefs, and it has been noted that in the
rehab program made by Scientologists (called Narconon) they state that all drugs of any type are
evil and poisonous to the body, which is quite contradicting to what they stated about medicine.
Overall it would be safe to assume that Scientology has a strict belief that all drugs are just generally
bad, and use can only lead to destruction, which is quite a fogged, close minded approach, but, it is
the one they have chosen to go.
Some religions use drugs as a part of the religion, others consider them evil and deadly, and some
just believe in simple moderation, overall it is clear that every religion has a different perspective on
drug use, whether it be medicinal or recreational. In today's society it truly is up to independent
choice, as there are so

Rastafarianism: One Of The Darkest Times In American History
Today, many religions, such as Rastafarianism, are disregarded as mere jokes and nothing more than
something to laugh at. However, back as late as the colonial period, and even to a degree today,
religion was taken as something no short of deathly. One of the scariest of these religions were the
Puritans. They were brought up to fear god and respect elders. There was no loving, forgiving god.
Your fate was already decided, through one there more radical ideas, predestination. This religion
was the focus of one of the darkest times in American history, The Salem witch trials. They were
nothing to joke about, taking the act of execration, to the death. To get a good grip, on this society,
we start from when they came over from England to America. ... Show more content on

Contrary to popular belief, not only did hearing occur in Salem town and Salem village, but in
Ipswich and Andover of the Providence of Massachusetts Bay. Of course, the most infamous trials
were conducted in the court of Oyer and Terminer of Salem town. According to a report by Robert
Calef, hundreds of people were accused. Some even became convinced themselves they were evil.
In total, twenty eight were hanged, hundreds more imprisoned, in for what shall be forever known as
one of the darkest times of American history.
One famous Puritan belief, was that of predestination. In essence, it means that god decides your
fate long before you are born, and no matter what you choose to do while on earth, it will not affect
your afterlife whatsoever. For example, a serial killer, such as Jack the Ripper could achieve heaven,
while a good man would not, because it had already been decide for them by god. This caused social
chaos, as many felt that what they did in life didn't matter, in the end.
On the whole, Puritanism is full of radical ideals and beliefs, often times taking execration or
heterodoxy as a punishment deserving of death. Throughout history this has caused many
consequences such as the Salem witch trials. Because of this regard these conflicts as some of the
darkest times in the history of

Pan Africanism And Rastafarianism

  • 1. Pan Africanism And Rastafarianism Pan–Africanism encourages the unification all people of African descent. This belief gained popularity throughout the African diaspora in the 1970's as "one of the manifestations of the Black Power Movement"(Britannica Academic, Encyclopedia). During the height of his career, Bob Marley utilized his positive social influence and Rastafarian faith to give a global view of Pan– African ideals in order to uplift his listeners and spread a message of peace and equality. During the post Civil Rights era, blacks in the United States had just received rights through the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the 1965 Voting Rights Act, and the 1968 Fair Housing Act. This federal legislation ended legal segregation and other discriminations that were deeply entrenched in American society. By the mid–1960s, Bob Marley "[immersed] himself into the faith by Rastafari" (bobmarley.com). Rastafarianism is a religion, popular among Black Jamaicans, "[combining] Protestant Christianity, mysticism, and a Pan–African political consciousness". At this time in his life, Bob Marley became more conscious about not just only the political issues in Jamaica, but the political issues and racial issues all over the world. In 1963 Bob Marley joined local vocal classes where he met Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The men became friends and formed the iconic reggae music trio, The Wailing Wailers. Reggae music "evokes a message of universal suffrage," (Reggae As Social Change: The Spread of Rastafarianism). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Haile Selassie Research Paper In this wonderful world there are different type of religions and cultures that are all special in their own way. Some religions that are known across the world are Christianity, Judaism, but most religions beyond that will sometimes get lost in the eyes of others. Some religions that are huge, but don't get enough attention unless it negative or over romanced are: Islamic, Buddhism, Hinduism, Rastafarianism. As an anthropologist having a emic and etic perceptive is needed as to get accurate, and authentic information, so emic mean looking inside the culture and having a personal experience with the people; etic means to look from the outside and see how a certain culture interacts , and what they portray to the world. • 5. The Movement International Recognition Of The Church Of... Rastafarianism In the 1930s, right after coronation of Haile Selassie I as emperor of Ethiopia, a religious following was started in Jamaica known as Rastafari, an Abrahamic belief. The most famous Rastafari is arguably Bob Marley, whose reggae music gained the Jamaican movement international recognition. Spiritual and moral traits vary widely within the religion, causing members to either to see it as a way of life or more as a religion. But what is uniting members across the world is the messiahship and divinity of the first emperor, Selassie. Rastafarianism does not really have an organizational structure or leadership even though it recognizes people like Marcus Garvey, Leonard Howell, Joseph Hibbert, Archibald Dunkley, Mortimer Planno, Vernon Carrington, Charles Edwards and Peter Tosh. "Many elements of Rastafari reflect its origins in Jamaica along with Ethiopian culture. Ethiopian Christianity traces its roots to the Church of Alexandria, founded by St Mark, and its 5th–century continuation in the Coptic Church of Alexandria. Rastafari holds many Christian beliefs like the existence of atriune God, called Jah, who had sent his divine incarnate son to Earth in the form of Jesus (Yeshua) and made himself manifest as the divine person of Haile Selassie I. Rastafari accept much of the Bible, although they believe that its message and interpretation have been corrupted. • 7. Compare And Contrast Rastafarianism And Buddhism Around the world there are countless religions being practiced, and each retains their own set of viewpoints on topics discussed throughout history. Today the two religions of focus are Rastafarianism and Buddhism, and the topics are ecology, sustainability, and the environment. Whereas Buddhism and Rastafarianism appear quite different in their terms of environmental greed, they show important similarities in their values on sustainability and the physical environment. Before discussing their values, a brief history on each religion, as one is widely known while the other has a much smaller following. Buddhism began with the enlightenment of Buddha, at the early age of thirty–five he awoke from the sleep of delusion and chose to share his liberation with those whom he used to suffer with. By the time he passed away, 435 BCE, his teachings termed Dharma were well known throughout central India. After the rainy season following his death, his disciple Mahakashyapa gathered his most dedicated followers to establish what they had learned and begin the widespread dispersion of Buddhism. Sherab Chodzin Kohn, writer for Buddhism for beginners magazine, states that: "Ananda, the Buddha's personal attendant, recited all the Buddha's discourses (sutras), naming the place where each was given and describing the circumstances. A monk named Upali recited all the rules and procedures the Buddha had established for the conduct of monastic life. Mahakashyapa himself recited the matrika, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Christianity and Rastafarianism A Discussion of Six Similarities Christianity and Rastafarianism are both rooted in Judaism and draw from the Hebrew sacred scriptures. Rastafarianism evolved as a reaction to the Christianity that was imposed upon African–American slaves and their descendents. There are several other aspects in which these two religions are similar, the purpose of this paper is to explore some of those similarities. The Christian religion began around 2000 years ago in Judea, which is now Israel. Christianity began with Jesus of Nazareth and his disciples. Rastafari's believe Tafari Makonnen, who was crowned Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia on November 2nd, 1930 is the living God incarnate, called Jah. He is the black Messiah that will lead the world's people of African origin into the Promised Land of full emancipation and divine justice. This is partly because of his titles King of Kings, Lord of Lords and Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah. These titles match those of the Messiah mentioned in the book of Revelation, in the Christian New Testament (Rastafari). Second Similarity–The Creation of the World: Just as the Christian Bible begins with, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth", (Holy Bible) The Holy Piby, the Rastafarian Bible, begins with, "From the beginning there was God and he spake and all things were made that are made". Both of these sacred texts go on to state that God made man for his glory and then made woman for man, God called the man Adam and the woman Eve. (Holy Piby) Both of the sacred texts also agree that God rested on the seventh day and said that men should also use the seventh day as a day of rest. Third Similarity–Worship Practices: Christian worship centers on meetings or services held on Sunday. These services consist of Biblical readings, communion, and music either with or without instrumental accompaniment, prayer, a teaching from the Bible in the form of a sermon and a collection of tithes. Second, and not far behind, was slave trade. Jamaica's location in the heart of the Caribbean Sea made it an ideal port for harboring slaves until they were needed to sell. This enabled Jamaica to be one of the British crown's most lucrative assets (Encyclopedia Americana, 2001, P 673). Things changed with the British Parliament's abolishment of the slave trade in 1833. Freed slaves became independent farmers or employees of surviving sugar plantations. The government also changed from an elected British assembly to a governor–controlled crown colony enacted in 1866 and run for 75 years. During this political change, sugar industry slowed and the emergence of the banana industry became Jamaica's main export (Encyclopedia Americana, 2001, P 673). Jamaica formed a two party system in its changes. The People's National Party (PNP) and Jamaican Labor Party (JLP) would alternate rule for the 40 years. In 1953, Jamaica inaugurated a ministerial system of government. Within this system the Federation of the West Indies was created in 1958, with Jamaica as its largest member. Jamaica's true independence came four years later with its withdrawal from the federation. The people of Jamaica consist of 90% black African descent. (Academic American ... Women are prohibited from swearing, saying anything sexually suggestive, and arguing. Sistren do not wear pants. Sometimes the representation of the religion is marred and flawed to those who view it because of the bureaucracy contained within. Unknown to those who gaze upon the dissolved morals and values of what is perceived to be the contradiction known as modern religion, it was never intended to be this way. The Rastafarian way of living and their everyday activities began as a deviant social behavior, but rather was a routinization of the masses into one cohesive unit, following the same general creed under different principles. This point can be seen most specifically in the modern Rastafarian hairstyles. The first theory claims that the word reggae was coined on a 1968 Pyramid dance single, "Do the Reggay (sic)," by Toots and the Maytals. By 1962 Jamaica was self–governing and ska was said to reflect the aspirations of the newly liberated masses. In Jamaica, it is said that in mid 1960s summer the weather was too hot and people refused to dance to up–tempo music like ska and this situation leaded to slow the tempo of music so a new style of music was emerged, rock steady. The tensions and contradictions in public urban landscape during a period of substantial transformation in New York and attempts to seize the shifting urban terrain are found within hip hop's rap lyrics. People who do not understand or listen to reggae judge it without knowing anything about it. "Reggae is something potheads listen to... Reggae just talks about weed... Reggae makes people rebellious... Reggae is just made by Rastafarian artists." In this particular case, I'm going to stand up for the genre of music, reggae. First and foremost, reggae is not about weed. As some artists do bring up in their music about smoking and weed, reggae is known for their peaceful and loving lyrics. Matter of fact, Alborosie made a song name, "No Cocaine" to show how some artists feel about drugs. So ALL songs are about drugs? Reggae artists are all discriminated by their music and how they look. Reggae is about loving yourself for who you are and expressing yourself, so of course reggae artists are free spirited. Every religion in my opinion should be free spirited and accept everyone for how they are because this is a world full of different kinds of beliefs and looks. This genre is what exactly interprets what I'm talking about, especially how there's more to it like a religion. I know I thought of the Rasta movement and the colors green, yellow and red. I thought of a symbol being abused to justify the smoking of cannabis. Bob Marley was born in 1945 in Rhoden Hall of Jamaica, after his parent separation he moved to West Kingston with his mother. West Kingston is where the story begins for his love of music, which would have implications all around the world. Marley's mother moved to Delaware, after a lengthy stay with her Marley returned to Jamaica and converted from Christianity to Rastafarianism. Marley's presence can be felt in many platforms but his music was source of inspiration and awareness for poverty, racism and colonialism (the policy or practice of acquiring full or partial political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and exploiting it economically). The word Jah is used quite frequently in Marley's music that refers to the black messiah whom they believe to be Haile Selassie who was the emperor of Ethiopia. Introduction In the twentieth century, two movements have emerged out of Jamaica in protest of black oppression and slavery, both mental and physical. The first to evolve was Garveyism, founded by Marcus Garvey, and was born in the aftermath of the First World War. Rastafarianism was the second movement to emerge, lead by Leonard Howell during the depression years of the 1930's. Garveyism and Rastafarianism are both resistance movements based on the same ideal: consciousness and essentialism of Africa and its descendants. The founding brethren of the Rastafari movement were Garveyites themselves, although not members of the Universal Negro Improvement Asscioation (UNIA), they agreed with and defended ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Garvey's aim was to recontextualize particular aspects of seeming irreconcilable systems of Marxism/Leninism, monarchism, and even of National Socialism for the African of Africa American experience (Zips, 224). Garvey did not feel restricted by established political ideologies, instead he felt free to pick out the best attributes of every government. Ultimately, Garveyism hoped to develop the African continent into a modern network of nations, modeling it after the United States and Western Europe (Lewis, 146). Garvey established the UNIA in Jamaica in the year 1914, two years later he left for the United States in order to gain more momentum for his movement and spread the African unity he had started in Jamaica. Before leaving Jamaica, Garvey made a prophecy of sorts to his followers: "Look into Africa for the crowning of a black king. He shall be the Redeemer" (Barrett, 67). From this prediction stems most of the discrepancy between Garveyites and Rastafarians, something I will discuss later in this paper. The four main themes that the Garvey movement was built upon were 1) Africa for Africans at home and abroad, 2) unity, 3) self–reliance, and 4) retaining their black pride in the presence of whites (Chevannes, 95). Garvey brought this ideology with him to the United States where he founded an American branch of the UNIA in 1917 and furthered his initiatives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Bob Marley Research Paper In popular culture, Bob Marley is arguably the figure most associated with Rastafarianism– a cultural and spiritual movement with its roots in Africa. At the center of their doctrine is the belief that black people are descended from the early Israelites, but they were exiled for their sins (De Freitas). The Rastafarian faith maintains that a king with the power of God will emerge out of Ethiopia, and that all members of the faith will return to their spiritual home (De Freitas). In 1930, there was a "biblical enthronement of Ras Tafari Makonnen ... as His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, King of King[s], Lord of Lords, and Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah" (Homiak). Many followers of the Rastafari faith, including Marley, maintain strict dietary regulations and wear dreadlocks, avoiding meat (especially pork), alcohol, and food of unknown sources (De Freitas). Rastafarians wear dreadlocks as a sign of their heritage, religious commitment, and their rejection of "wider society they regard as Babylon" (Homiak). Most likely the most prominent image associated with Rastafarianism, the smoking of cannabis is a part of their spiritual experiences. There are no strict rules regarding the use of marijuana, but "the overuse of it might turn into an end in itself–" so it is to be used with caution (De Freitas). How Marley's Music Changed Society The paper discusses how Marley's music changed society by mainstreaming the ideas of black resistance, social justice, racial equality, and anti–colonialism to the baby–boom generation and generations endlessly onward. The paper will outline the historical background of reggae as well as the social cause to which it became attached by the work of Marley. The paper submits that reggae, ultimately, became the chief means of expressing the angst and dislocation felt by many within the African Diaspora. Finally, the paper will offer a critical analysis of one of Marley's works, "I Shot the Sheriff", and will explain why this signature work is a classic instance of reggae speaking out against injustice and the prevailing power structure. We learn from looking at the literature that modern–day Reggae had its wellsprings in the African–American soul music of the 1950s and 1960s. The insistent, off–beat rhythmic pattern of soul music became a feature of reggae in the late– 1960s and early 1970s. However, the aforementioned pattern mostly appeared in the form of the trade–mark galloping backbeat of ska, which was a tip–beat and dance–oriented predecessor of reggae. Ska had a limited expressive range and its galloping speed needed to be slowed down if it was to enjoy a larger audience. Fortunately, it did slow down and, by the end of the 1960s, something known as "Rock Steady" was beginning to surface (Anderson, 206–208). Since its existence, this nation has seen a series of revolutions and riots in efforts to reverse the unjust social, economic, and political conditions. The most influential of these revolutionary efforts contributed to the formation of Jamaica's very own religious movement, Rastafarianism. With oppression serving as one of the driving forces for the Rastafari Movement, it is understandable why its followers are so adamant about professing their ideologies, beliefs and practices. The central language used to express the grievances of Rastafarians is known globally as the music genre, Reggae. It is not merely coincidental that the country pregnant with such radical motives also gave birth to its own music brand. • 72. The Impact Of Rastafari On The Late 1920s And Early 1930s... Rastafari Rastafari is a young religion that was established in Jamaica in the 1930s, which originated from Marcus Garvey's movement in the late 1920s against the oppression of the African Race. Rastafari advanced into a religion right after the crowning of Halie Selassie I as the emperor of Ethiopia in 1930. There are approximately 1 million followers all around the world today. There are multiple branches inside of Rastafari, each of them carrying similar customs, beliefs, and views. Rastafarianism commenced in the Jamaican Slums in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Rastafari started out as a movement in the 1920s led by Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican publisher, journalist, and entrepreneur. Garvey led the organization known as the Universal Negro Improvement Association, whose intentions were to unify blacks with their land of origin. Garvey preached "Look to Africa where a black king shall be crowned, he shall be your Redeemer." (BBC) This statement later became the basis of the Rastafari movement. When Emperor Halie Selassie I crowned himself emperor of Ethiopia in 1930, Rastafarians saw the crowning as the fulfillment of Garvey's prophecy. In fact, Rastafari takes its name from the Emperor's original name, Tafari. (Biography). Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly than the first definition, "Rastafari is not a religion. It is a spiritual livity." (Bisnauth 195–199) Livity refers to the energy or life force that flows through all living things. (Tyehimba Salandy) My favorite is that all Rastafarians are from Jamaica. Though the origins of the livity were formed in Jamaica and focused on repatriation and reconnecting with Africa, I–thiopia, the motherland of all human creation, not all Rastafarians are Jamaican. • 76. Rastafarianism And Alcohol Use Catholicism, Rastafarianism, Scientology, and Mind Altering Substances. Drugs are used everyday in society, from medicine, to recreational use, they are all around us in our everyday lives. Some are considered to be bad, and dangerous, and yet others save lives, so who decides which ones we should, or should not, use? Besides the obvious answer of not using the ones that have very high chances of killing you, such as heroin, meth, etc..., But what about the ones that do not have a tendency to kill, are very hard to overdose on, and for the most part are Scientifically safe to the human brain? In most cases all drug use is frowned upon in the two out of three religions (Catholicism, and Scientology) and marijuana is the only drug mentioned in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Like Catholicism they tend to have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to recreational drug use, and even have their own rehab program developed specifically targeted at youth. They do believe in the use of medicine, when prescribed by a doctor, and will rely on medical advice given to them by a doctor as well. Smoking and drinking have no prohibition on them, as long as they are used in moderation, just like catholicism and they believe that it is important for one to enjoy themselves every now and then, if that means drinking so be it. However it is commonly believed that Scientology tends to send false messages about their actual beliefs, and it has been noted that in the rehab program made by Scientologists (called Narconon) they state that all drugs of any type are evil and poisonous to the body, which is quite contradicting to what they stated about medicine. Overall it would be safe to assume that Scientology has a strict belief that all drugs are just generally bad, and use can only lead to destruction, which is quite a fogged, close minded approach, but, it is the one they have chosen to go. Some religions use drugs as a part of the religion, others consider them evil and deadly, and some just believe in simple moderation, overall it is clear that every religion has a different perspective on drug use, whether it be medicinal or recreational. In today's society it truly is up to independent choice, as there are so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Of course, the most infamous trials were conducted in the court of Oyer and Terminer of Salem town. According to a report by Robert Calef, hundreds of people were accused. One famous Puritan belief, was that of predestination. In essence, it means that god decides your fate long before you are born, and no matter what you choose to do while on earth, it will not affect your afterlife whatsoever. For example, a serial killer, such as Jack the Ripper could achieve heaven, while a good man would not, because it had already been decide for them by god. This caused social chaos, as many felt that what they did in life didn't matter, in the end. On the whole, Puritanism is full of radical ideals and beliefs, often times taking execration or heterodoxy as a punishment deserving of death.
