Tips For A New Puppy Or Dog Home
When you bring a new puppy or dog home and you plan on keeping it inside most of the time you
are going to have to puppy proof your home. Otherwise you may return to a disaster after being
gone for work or a night out. Here are some tips to help. Before you bring your dog home remove
anything at ground level you want to keep. This can include shoes, game controllers, lamp cords or
anything that is below a 4 foot level. The reason for this is because your dog will think that anything
in its reach is a toy, worth eating or chewing up into shreds. Any paper, magazines, clothes or other
normal objects that people have in their home should be put up on a shelf or placed inside a closed
closet. There is no getting around this because if you leave your dog unattended inside your home it
will surely get separation anxiety and start to chew, tear or shred anything in its reach. Make sure
that lower level cabinets have child–proof latches on them and never leave cabinets that contain
cleaning solutions or furniture wax open after each use. Even if you plan on leaving your dog
outside when you leave you will still have to keep an eye on it when you are home. Make sure that
you reward good behavior with a treat or lots of loving attention and bad behavior with a stern
"NO". You shouldn 't beat or injure your pet but a medium swat on the rump or nose with a loosely
rolled paper will help in getting the dogs attention. If you find yourself in a situation where the dog
has destroyed

The Pros And Cons Of Purebred Dogs
The cost between breeder and shelters differs by a significant amount. If the dog comes from a
breeder and is a purebred it can be more costly because you are getting a good dog that has the
potential to be used for dog shows or they could be bred to work. E: In the article "The pros and
cons of purebred dogs" The author, Kelly Sundstrom, states that "Only purebred dogs are allowed to
compete in American Kennel Club–sponsored dog shows. As such, if you're interested in
participating in these types of events, you should choose a purebred over a mixed breed." This
means if the dog is being adopted for show or anything related, than a purebred is going to be the
dog to chose. Otherwise, When buying a dog from a breeder the general cost can be ... Show more

In the article "why you should adopt a shelter animal" the author, Emilie Plesset states that "the
financial cost for adopting a shelter animal is almost always less than purchasing an animal from a
breeder". The costs for health benefits such as having the dog spayed or neutered , having the dog
microchipped and all necessary vaccinations are all included on the cost of a shelter dog. This is all
important to consider when looking to find the perfect pet to add to a family. A purebred dog from a
breeder could encounter some health issues as it begins to grow. Many breeders breed the dogs so
they will have certain features. When this happens it makes the breed more prone to some diseases
that could fluctuate the dogs lifespan. In the article " Problems common to purebred dogs" it states
that, "The main problem with purebreds stems from the simple fact that to create a purebred puppy
you need two dogs from the exact same gene pool. This gene pool is already limited, but many
breeders will use dogs from the same family gene pool to create more dogs (inbreeding)." This is
proving that with purebred dogs there could be some health issues caused by

Kennel Club Research Paper
Although some would have you believe that the prevalence of genetic disorders in these dogs is
exaggerated, much evidence points the other way. Some estimates claim up to 25% of dogs
registered in the American Kennel Club have some genetic complication. (Lemonick, np.) Since
American Kennel Club breed standards only pertain to physical appearance, dogs with unseen
problems are allowed to pass on these defects, so long as exteriorly they conform to expectations.
Because if this, vast amounts of medical conditions are becoming increasingly common among
registered dogs. As the arbiter of purebred dog breeding, the American Kennel Club has a
heightened responsibility to help protect the health of the breeds they represent. Despite this, the ...

By looking at historical paintings, drawing, and photographs, we can see what various breeds have
looked like in the past. To draw on an earlier example, pugs, as seen in paintings from their initial
rise to fame, hade much more pronounced muzzles. Their faces weren't as flattened as modern pugs.
Their eyes were less "bugged". They had longer legs, and a slimmer body. All of these features
contributed to avoiding the health problems common today. By looking at how pugs have appeared
in the past, and revising the breed standard with those historical examples in mind, the American
Kennel Club can strike a happy medium between modern aesthetics and historic health. This
solution would work well for many breed currently experiencing suboptimal quality of life, and
could be very effective at halting and reversing the negative changes of modern conformation

Purebred Dog Research Paper
According to the Humane Society of the United States, every year about 2.7 million dogs and cats
are euthanized in the U.S. due to overcrowded shelters. This enormous number could go down, if
more people choose to adopt their animals. Many people, however, are more selective in the kind of
dogs they want. They may desire a specific breed of dog with a known lineage, rather than the
mixed breed dog one is likely to find at a shelter. Owning a purebred dog can be good; you get
exactly what you wanted, and you can select for specific skills or temperaments you wish for in your
dog. There are also several drawbacks to purebred dogs. To maintain a breed means that most of the
dogs are going to be from a small number of founder dogs, or, as is often the case with breeders, the
dogs are all likely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Morgan Horse Research Papers
Every young girl grows up wishing her parents would buy her a pony. Riding horses is a passion
that many people share. Riding a horse can provide a freedom unlike anything else. The bonds
between horse and rider can become so strong it is amazing they cannot talk. There are two types of
breeds that stand out among the rest: The Morgan horse and the Arabian. These two breeds are
unlike any other because of their size, yet they are also some of the most hard–working, free–
spirited horses bred.
The Morgan breed is intelligent, willing and eager. Morgans are known for their upright necks,
distinctive dished faces, and their wildly expressive eyes. They are small, compact horses with a lot
of muscle ("Morgan Breed Description"). The Arabian breed ... Show more content on

It is not a proven fact, yet it is thought that the colt's mother was an Arabian and father was a
Thoroughbred. Justin Morgan named him Figure, and although Figure was not as big as most the
other horses Justin worked with, he proved to be the strongest. Justin entered Figure into races also;
he was much smaller but almost always finished first. Word spread of this little horse's glory and
many started to breed their mares with this outstanding Stallion. And the breed was named after the
owner who started it all, Justin Morgan ("The History of the Morgan Horse"). Now the Arabian
horse has a very different background. The Arabian is the oldest known breed of horse. They are
said to have come from the deserts of the Middle East. They are now one of the most wanted breeds
in America. They lived along the Arabian Peninsula, bred by the Bedouins as war horses that could
make long journeys or quick escapes. Because of the harsh conditions in the desert, they grew large
lungs and indescribable endurance for any animal (Welcome to Arabian Horses.org – Education).
The Morgan may have been part Arabian, which ties these two breeds together (The History of the
Morgan Horse). Both are small, yet have never–ending production of

Thoroughbreds and Saddlebreds
Thoroughbreds and Saddlebreds are both commonly known horses. They Both have been selectively
bred to get their high quality. Although, these horses have been bred so carefully, they have been
bred together to get a faster horse, but also great for show. Thoroughbreds are bred for their speed.
They're known as the "English Horse," because they evolved in Britain in the 17th and 18th
centuries. Thoroughbreds were named because of the way they were bred. They were called
"thoroughbreds" because they were purebred. "The name , "Thoroughbred," is a direct translation of
the Arabic word Kehilan ("IHWT Irish Horse Welfare Trust")." The origin of the breeding of
thoroughbred back in the ancient times was found that the three main descendants weren't very fast
horses. The gene that made these horses so quick came from an anonymous mare that was raced
more than 300 years ago. They think that this mare may have been part or mostly Shetland.
Thoroughbreds are often described as the highest class of light horse imaginable. "The Irish
Thoroughbred has won many major races throughout the world ("IHWT Irish Horse Welfare
Trust")." Thoroughbreds are usually about 16 hands tall, (1 hand is equal to 3 feet). They are long
and sleek, with long legs which allows them to move quickly. Their most common colors would be
brown, bay, chestnut, and black. They have a straight profile and all though they have Arabian
ancestors, they do not show any of their distinct profiles. "Thoroughbreds are bred

The Cold Animal War Essay
The cold animal war There is a fight that has been made public and has steadily been growing. The
fight or war as I like to call it, is should animal mills be dealt away with or should they stay where
they are? I hear constantly that I should not by an animal from a mill. I am told that we have enough
animals in this world. Here is the thing though lots of people enjoy getting a new animal. Especially
if that animal is a "pure breed". So the argument ensues. There are two clear sides, one side says we
should only adopt animals and get them neutered/spayed. The other side says we should be able to
buy our pets without anything stopping us. Both sides have valid points, but we should voice our
own questions. Like does buying an animal from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Breeding an animal is said to be better all around. You have a knowledge of who is the parents to
this animal and how they were treated. You know if the animal age and you know what kind of
health risk you may get from the animal.
Breeding is said to be superior to adopting and one of those reasons said is that by breeding an
animal the animal is pure bred. By having a pure bred animal you can breed more like that animal.
You have papers that say your animal is pure bred. Being pure bred is kind of like being an upper
class citizen. You get treated better, you get better food, and animal health is treated similar to a
humans.
Breeders will even tell you around the age your animal will be able to live up to. This is because you
have a healthy pure bred animal. You can sell the animal for higher profit. Money makes a big
difference and when you can make a profit on animals be it dog shows to selling dairy cows. For
example, we know there is such a thing as high quality animals. Especially in our food. One of the
most bragged about pure breeding is that the animal is better around. Stronger, higher quality, and
less likely to die at a young age.
Con–side breeding animals Breeding animals can be harsh for the animals. They could be bred into
an animal mill where they are cooped up in cages all day and never get to go out. The animal like
chickens, dogs, or cats, etc. Can be bred massively. This is all to have higher production. Which
means more money.

Selective Breeding Vs. Natural Selection
Selective breeding has been used for many years to achieve the expression of desired traits in
animals and plants. Similar to natural selection, humans have developed artificial selection where
humans select the most desirable traits instead of the environment, this is what's known as selective
breeding. But in fact selective breeding does not select for the fittest phenotype like in natural
selection it actually selects for the most desirable phenotypes which may cause harm to the
individual.
Natural selection selects against harmful alleles as they are disadvantageous to the individual and
possibly restricts its ability to survive till the age of sexual reproduction thus not being able to pass
on this harmful gene, whereas selective breeding selects for harmful alleles if seen desirable.
Selective breeding involves breeding organisms based on their phenotypes so that the desired traits
are passed onto successive generations, these desired alleles then increase (in frequency) in the gene
pool. This has a large commercial benefit as animal and crop products now contain higher quality
meat, quantity of milk, quality of wool, larger fruits etc.
The goal of selective breeding in animals is to either produce a pure breed (a breed that will
consistently produce offspring with the desired traits or to simply improve the quality of the desired
trait/phenotype (homozygous). This is achieved by inbreeding (where two closely related
individuals mate and produce offspring)

What Is Mendel's Ability To Cross-Pollinate Purebred Peas?
Gregor Mendel was a European monk, born in the year 1822. Though his work was little known in
his century, they are now the widely known base principles of genetics. Mendel studied genetics
with plants, but his principles are the same for people and animals. Heredity works the same for
almost all complex life.
Good ol' Gregor studied heredity and hybridization with a group of pea plants. This is because peas
are easy to grow in large numbers and have both male and female reproductive organs. That makes
it possible for the plants to cross–pollinate or self–pollinate. In his experiments, Mendel selectively
cross–pollinated purebred peas with certain characteristics and note the outcome of each generation
of plants.
Mendel discovered that if he bred one plant that had only yellow seeds, with another that only had
green seeds, the first generation of offspring always has yellow seeds. ... Show more content on

The result is that new combinations of genes present in neither parent are possible. For example, a
pea plant's inheritance of the ability to produce purple flowers instead of white ones does not make
it more likely that it will also inherit the ability to produce yellow pea seeds in contrast to green
ones. Likewise, the principle of independent assortment explains why the human inheritance of a
particular eye color does not increase or decrease the likelihood of having 6 fingers on each hand.
Today, we know this is due to the fact that the genes for independently assorted traits are located on
different chromosomes."
In the end, Mendel's discoveries changed how we thought about inheritance of traits. Those
discoveries formed today's basic principles of genetics and heredity. Mendel's principles are pretty
important as without them, no one would know why we had different colored eyes or hair. They had
a big impact on the scientific

Puppy Mills Ethical
Is It Ethical? All around the world, dogs suffer daily from not just their owners, but from their own
bodies. Inbreeding and extreme breed standards lower the quality of life for purebred dogs (Rooney
and Sargan). Puppy mills, despite government crackdown, continue to operate and sell ill, disfigured
dogs (Solotaroff). Breeding purebred dogs only for profit and not for the wellbeing of the dog, is
unethical, because of puppy mills, dog defects due to this kind of breeding, and dog quality of life.
Firstly, the number one reason why purebred breeding purely for profit is unethical: puppy mills. A
puppy mill, as defined by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), are "commercial

As anyone who has seen a televised dog show can attest, some dogs are deformed in disturbing
ways. One might look at the "excessively wrinkled skin of the Chinese Shar–Pei," the "the flat face
of a bulldog," or the "low–slung eyelids of a Bloodhound" (PBS), and think, "That can not be
healthy." The fact of the matter is that these deformities are far from healthy. As the Public
Broadcasting Service (PBS) points out, the Shar–Pei's skin (due to it's "excessively wrinkled"
nature) is prone to skin infections, the Bloodhound's droopy eyes are practically magnets for eye
infection, and the Bulldog's face is so squished that it can never breathe correctly. While these
deformities may be more obvious, overly large or small pedigree dogs have their own slew of health
problems (Rooney and Sargan). As Rooney and Sargan disclose, very small dogs (known as toy
breeds) often have dislocated kneecaps, heart problems, and trouble staying warm. Big dogs, such as
Great Danes, can suffer from heat prostration and orthopedic issues (Rooney and Sargan).
According to Rooney and Sargan, almost every purebred breed of dog is more likely to have at least
one genetic disease compared to mixed breeds. However, physical problems are not the only thing
purebred dogs have to face: behavioral problems are also more prevalent in certain breeds (Rooney
and Sargan). Rooney and Sargan reveal that

Purebred Dogs–Beauty and the Beast Purebred dogs are big business. There will always be demand
for the cute, little Yorkshire terrier, or the easy going Labrador retriever. As long as there is demand,
there will be people breeding dogs. There are currently 340 recognized dog breeds around the world,
and the American Kennel Club recognizes 167 of those breeds (1). The Westminster Kennel Club
dog show shines a spotlight on purebred dogs, with the winners representing the standard of that
breed. The problem is, the standard of dog breeds keep changing, and with those changes, dogs are
suffering. The American Kennel Club (AKC) sets the standard for each breed of dog recognized in

Compare And Contrast: Professional Horses Vs. Quarter Horses
Thoroughbreds v.s. Quarter horses
Although many people may think that any horse is just a horse, that's not really true. There are
countless different breeds of horses in our world today, two of which that are most commonly
known: thoroughbreds and quarter horses. These two breeds are similar in a few ways but different
in several ways, including how they look, how they act, and what they do. It's similar to comparing
two different breeds of dogs; of course there are similarities between them, but there are also many
differences.
First of all, these two breeds of horses are both on the bigger side of the spectrum when it comes to
typical horse size. Most, however, would say that quarter horses fall closer to the middle, but really
it just depends on the genetics of the horse. The average quarter horse height ranges between 14 and
16 hands. A hand is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, all race horses (when the rider is on the horse) are thoroughbreds, and all harness
racing horses (when the rider is in a little buggy attached behind the horse) are standardbreds. To

difficult to train a large horse with a long body and long legs to do specific things whereas it might
be easier for a smaller horse to do those things, or the other way around. This is why there's such a
huge breed difference when one compares the types of horses used for different disciplines. Both
thoroughbreds and quarter horses are very versatile athletes. Quarter horses are great for jumping,
barrel racing, trail riding, western pleasure, and slow paced riding because of their stockier build.
Thoroughbreds are great for jumping, racing, cross country, endurance, and they can be used for
barrel racing but it's usually a lot harder for them to do all the tight turns because of how big they

Genetic Disorders: Mixed Vs. Purebred Dogs
The purpose of evolution is to pass on traits that are the most beneficial to a species which makes
them more likely to survive. Artificial selection or "selective breeding" disrupts this process, causing
terrible side effects. This is because the purpose of pure breeding is to give the dog a desired
appearance, not functionality. To breed a purebred puppy you need two dogs from the same gene
pool. This gene pool is already limited, but many breeders will use dogs from the same family gene
pool to breed more dogs. Additionally, dog clubs often require that their dogs be bred within the
same club, which again ends up severely limiting the gene pool variety. Other previously recorded
genetic defects include an increased chance of tumors, bone disorders, and a variety of neurological
diseases.
A 2013 study at Bellumori et al used medical records from the veterinary clinic at UC Davic for
more than 27,000 dogs. The purpose of this study was to compare the incidence of 24 genetic
disorders in mixed vs purebred dogs.

dogs. Although, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay On Pitbulls
Dogs are often known as "Man's best friend" and come to find out it is true. As my dog who I
received as a Christmas presents in 2011 turned out to be my best friend who helped me survive
high school and now on to college. Hes name is Beast and he is a very caring, playable, friendly, and
most of all loyal dog, and yes he is a bulldog/pitbull mix. I would've loved to bring him here to
Tucson with me, but I live in an area where the pitbull breed is prohibited and are labelled as
"Dangerous dogs". Which is understandable as pit bulls are very protective of their owners, yet I do
not believe that they are dangerous dogs due to the love that have for their owners. As pit bulls are
not so friendly when it comes to their kind, but it is a different story with humans as they display
characteristics of being playful, and caring. So although pit bulls can be aggressive they should not
be banned from communities In Tucson due to bad stereotypes, bad owners, and the experiences I
shared with my pitbulls.
Stereotypes usually are known to affect their topic of discussion, as they often express a negative
viewpoint. Whether it be towards a race of people, a type of food, or a type of animal. Like how our
stereotypes are often relatable when it comes to objectifying a race of people or a breed of dogs.
Such as pit bulls a breed of dogs that are highly profiled as "aggressive dogs" it is stereotypes like
this that affect such a good dog breed. Yet, this did not stop Prime Minister John Major of Great
Britain to comment "Such dogs have no place in our home" and putting more than 10,000 pit bulls
on death row(. Because pitbulls are not dangerous, as Dobermans, Rottweilers, Great Danes, and
German Shepherds are known as frequent bitter. Yet, people tend to exaggerate and explode the
media when a dog bite and/or attack was done by a pit bull. (Gladwell 1) Or they get the name that
pitbulls are not a family dog, as they were believed to first be used for Bull Baiting and Dogfighting
but before that pit bulls were often used as babysitters for children.(Stevens 1) So although a pitbull
can be known for its "aggressive behavior" or "untamed tendencies" yet, the characteristics missed
are the stereotypes that should be mentioned

Before we look closer at genetic modification in dogs, it is necessary to have a basic understanding
of how science defines a dog and how we have such a wide variety of breeds today that range from
the wolf to the poodle. According to Dictionary.com Microevolution is "evolutionary change

the world around them. One of the earliest species of canines is the wolf. A typical North American

Physicist Albert Einstein once said "Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of
compassion to embrace all living creatures." Today, humans are not fully taking care of their
companions, and because of that they are now suffering from diseases that cause major problems
that could have been avoided. With the strict breeding standards given to dogs, we are predisposing
them to genetic disorders that would have never had the possibility of showing up. Charles Darwin
coined the term "artificial selection," to describe how humans were influencing inherited traits in
other species, effectively replacing the naturally occurring mechanisms that select for genetic

The dog ends up costing a lot financially and emotionally. The problem lays in the fact that not
many dog owners do not know the potential health obstacles that their newly purchased purebred
may have to face. Sometimes, breeders don't know the extent of the negative side effects of their
specific trait breeding because they are not the ones having to raise the sick, temperamental dog; but
more times than not they do not care about the problems that will ensue, because they have become
normal over the years, and are now expected. The administrators that make the regulations for
Kennel Clubs and the breeders that follow the standards are the main contributors to the increase of
health issues and decrease of animal welfare in dogs, this is because they rather devote their time
refining one specific quality that is deemed desirable, rather than the overall health of the animal.
In order to tackle the issue of canine welfare, it is important to go over what animal welfare is and
how selection pressure affects different types of dogs, and how that overall effects the health of the
dog. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, "Animal welfare refers to the state
of the animal; Protecting an animal 's welfare means providing for its physical and mental needs."
The selection pressure now–a–days on purebreds is completely different than mutts, and a lot of

Marker Assisted Breeding
'Selective breeding is the process by which humans select organisms with desirable traits and breed
them together so the trait appears in the next generation. The process is repeated over many
generations until the characteristic becomes common. Selective breeding now often uses
reproductive technologies, such as artificial insemination and marker assisted selection, so that the
desirable characteristics of one male can be passed onto many offspring. This increases the rate at
which the desirable trait is passed to progeny. Marker assisted selection is a molecular technique
used to screen a genome for genetic markers that indicate desirable traits. (*1).

In these times, farmers selectively bred sheep to make them grow fleece from 'nose to their toes' and
thicker coats. They did this thinking that the sheep having a heavier fleece would bring them greater
returns. Because the sheep had so much wool, this meant more work for the farmers due to them
having to dag and crutch the sheep where the wool becomes dirty. This added to production costs
and this wool has lower value so farmers have started selectively breeding sheep so they only have
wool in the areas that are going to be worth the most money and get them the best returns possible.
'Their aim was to remove all the unnecessary parts of the sheep and fleece to create sheep that were
more productive and easier and cheaper to maintain – 'easy care' sheep.' (3*). Easy–care sheep have
been selectively bred to have the traits of bare backside, bare belly, bare legs, short tail and bare
head. These traits, such as bare backside and short tail reduce dags which therefore reduces the risk
of them getting fly–strike, flies are attracted to the dags. Flystrike occurs when flies lay maggots in
the fleece and then move onto the skin and damage it. The bare backside and short tail can minimise
the risk of this and therefore reduce the time and cost farmers may have to take to deal with this

many fantastic qualities and advantages. First, you would be adopting an animal that truly
appreciates and needs a home. Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal mixed–

When you purchase a purebred, 99% of the time you know exactly what you are going to get right
down to the molar strength. Your wallet won't be as happy as you about the new pup. The lowest
price we've seen is 800 dollars and one of the highest is $2,000. The rate rises once you add up
initial cost, vet bills (more visits are required than a mutt), and training lessons. Training however
can be easier. You know the troubles you could run into with training them since you know the exact
breed. With mutts it's much harder because it's a mixture of breeds. I know people love the look of
purebreds, but that's about all they're getting. I realize people keep creating more dogs because they
want what they want, but there's already a surplus of them. And honestly, I used to think that too, but
then I found a mixed–breed dog I really clicked with.
Mixed–breed dogs are better in the sense that they're healthier and more affordable. An added
benefit is that you help an animal in need versus adding to the problem of dog over–population. So

Purebred Dogs
Society is responsible for cruelty to dogs due to ignorance of a painful truth. Purebred dogs are
riddled with disease and their lives are just unnatural. This act of breeding dogs to achieve a certain
look creates cancerous problems, abuses dogs, and cannot continue (Collegehumor). Dog breeds
have increased dramatically. In fact, 90% of these breeds were created in the past 100 years
(Collegehumor). This is due to genetic manipulation caused by humans trying to achieve a certain
look or certain characteristics from an animal that others did not contain. Many a person says that
mutts are dirty, unhealthy dogs, when in–fact; "mutts are dogs in their healthiest state
(Collegehumor)". Breeders deny the dogs the right to mate with other dogs of ... Show more content

Every animal has its own problems, of course. But the plight of purebred dogs far over reaches the
trek of mixed breeds. Many scientists agree that in general, mutts are healthier dogs, needing fewer
trips to the vet and a longer life span ("PHA/SPCA" 1). "Mixed breeds... have something called
hybrid vigor. When you mix two or more separate gene pools, the recessive genes that carry the
health problems are buried. As a result, you get a healthier animal. Simply put, mixed–breed dogs
are, in general, healthier than their purebred cousins" ("PHS/SPCA" 1). It has been proven that
purebred dogs are incredulously more expensive than mixed breeds. The starting cost of the dog, the
maintaining and up keep, and the constant trips to the vet are all examples of the expense one would
go through while owning a purebred ("PHS/SPCA" 1). The expenses of pure bred dogs are higher
than mixed; the only way to fix the diseases is to make the purebred dogs mate with other dogs of
different breeds, and finally, the amount of dogs that need adopting. Shelters are overflowing with
mixed breed dogs ("PHS/SPCA" 1). People overlook the mixed breed dogs and go straight to the
purebred. Millions of dogs are overlooked, millions of good, healthy dogs. This is a tragedy to many
animal lovers, and it is a tragedy to animal rights

Persuasive Essay On Dog Breeding
For being man's supposed best friend, humans too often make choices to benefit themselves instead
of dogs. People decide what traits make a dog cute and disregard what traits make them healthy.
Dog breeding is a harmful practice for dogs both biologically and culturally due to superficial
standards. These dogs are bred to be cute, but that cuteness can inadvertently carry a gene that can
lead to disease, or even the cuteness itself could be debilitating, such as with the poster pug's flat
face makes breathing significantly more difficult. Dogs are living, breathing creatures and the
standards set for their reproduction should factor their well–being into the standard of the dog.
Dog breeding is dangerous because to make a perfect dog they too often inbreed and cause birth
defects and other health issues in dogs. Terry Allen, an "In These Times" senior editor who has
written the magazine's monthly investigative health and science column since 2006, argues in "We're
Breeding Dogs to Death" that "neither price, pedigree nor being loved like a member of the family
can shield a dog from the pain, breathing difficulties, cancer, panoply of debilitating genetic
disorders, mental illness, crippling physiognomy and shortened life span that disproportionately
plague purebreds." The article "Selective Breeding or Artificial Selection" explains that in dogs, the
"frequency of being homozygous for rare recessive disorders increases when inbreeding occurs,
potentially causing severe

Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis The American Quarter Horse breed is named for its ability to sprint
faster than any other horse breed in the world, reaching speeds of up to fifty–five miles per hour.
The American Quarter Horse Association is among the largest in the world, with millions of quarter
horses registered. The quarter horse has a noticeable look; the breed is more muscular in nature and
thus is referred to as the pit–bull or bodybuilder of the equine world. The American quarter horse is
very versatile as it has made its way into racing, western, and english. Quarter horse crosses are very
popular and they make up a large percentage of the equine population in the world. A new genetic

Purebred Dog Pros And Cons
A purebred dog is to a normal mixed breed dog what a Lamborghini is to a P.T. Cruiser in the eyes
of some pet owners. A purebred dog is "one that has been registered and has papers that prove that
the dog's mother and the dog's father are both of the same breed" (TheFunTimesGuide). So while
you may be questioning the cultural relevance of a purebred dog to any culture, people are out there

people's way of thinking. Getting back on track, white people tend to own more pure bred dogs

The Importance of Purebred Dogs by Babette Haggerty
Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different
things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs
out there. Some small, some large, long–haired or short–haired. There are many variances in what a
dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every
dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me
to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt.
Continuing to create these so–called "best dogs" is dangerous to not only the purebred's health, but

They look at the dog's pure genes as a guide to knowing the dog's characteristics and personalities
comparable to that specific breed. Something they aren't remembering is that genes carry health
issues as well, and in reality purebreds are more susceptible to genetic diseases than mixed breeds.
Veterinarian and blogger, Dr. Patty Khuly, claims that she "generally observe[s] at least one genetic
disease in nine out of 10 purebred patients during their first examination (Khuly)." That's at least
one disease in 99% of the purebreds that she is personally examining. The reason mixed–breeds are
less likely to face these issues is because they derive from different breeds of dogs and "when you
mix two or more separate gene pools, the recessive genes that carry the health problems are buried
("Why Mixed Breeds")." Simply put by a blogger from Global Animal, "genetic diversity in dogs
leads to healthier, stronger individuals (Armentano)." Although I agree that it could be helpful to
know how a dog is expected to act and the skills it should have, I feel what is most important and
what people really should be concerned with is the health of the dog, rather than knowing the
expected characteristics. According to what I have researched mixed–breeds are just healthier than
purebred dogs and I think that is something that should definitely be noted. Not only is this

As long as dogs are being selectively bred for aesthetic and physical characteristics, they will
continue to suffer. Selective breeding is the process in which human beings breed animals to
produce desired traits in the offspring. Eventually dogs were being bred less for the ability to work
and more for how the animals looked. Selective breeding does have its own benefits. The clubs keep
track of the dogs and their lineage, which is helpful for telling if the dog has any family history of
disease. When breeders use inbreeding or line breeding it greatly increases the chances of genetic
diseases. The alternative to purebred dogs and the health problems associated with them would be

It could be anywhere from breeding dogs with strong noses to breeding dogs for a specific color in
the dogs coat. Carrie Allan from the Humane Society says that dogs were first selectively bred to be
better at whatever job was required (2010). These jobs were predominately hunting but also
branched into other areas like sheep herding. Owners wanted dogs that were best suited to chase
foxes or crawl into rabbit holes, and when one dog showed aspects that would help with the job, that
dog was bred with others that showed similar traits.
Eventually the dogs were being bred less for the ability to work and more for how the animals
looked. Breeders stopped choosing animals that could run fast and started choosing animals that had
extra fluffy hair or a long curled tail. Dogs ended up becoming massive or miniscule, bald or furry,
long or short. Dog owners wanted animals that fit their ideal of the perfect pet. Tea–cup canines
became increasingly popular in the search for the perfect lap dog, while dogs like Mastiffs and Great
Danes were bred for their enormous size. Pugs were bred for their short faces that were deemed as
cute. Pit Bulls and Rottweiler were chosen for the strength and ferocity that the breeds exhibit.

The Negative Effects of Breeding Purebred Dogs Dog breeders breed "purebred dogs." Standards
for dog breeds and qualifications for a dog to be considered purebred are set by kennel clubs.
Kennel clubs, such as the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and the Kennel Club (UK),
are organizations that make money by registering dogs as purebred. Some people might want a
purebred because only purebreds can compete in most dog shows, which are sponsored by kennel
clubs. Others might think a purebred will be healthier than a mutt, which is a dog not bred from a
specific line of dogs, and kennel clubs won't register. However, breeding purebred dogs can result in

If people really want a dog that is considered purebred, kennel clubs like the AKC need to change
standards for dog breeds to encourage healthy dogs, but the only way that is going to happen is if
their is a public push for it. It has happened before. In 2008, a documentary called Purebred Dogs
Exposed was televised in Great Britain. It was critical of the Kennel Club, the British equivalent of
the AKC, and showed purebreds with a range of health problems. The documentary showed that the
2003 champion of the country's most prestigious dog show, Crufts, was a Pekingese who had to be
photographed sitting on ice blocks because his flat face made his breed so prone to overheating. The
film also showed pictures of certain breeds in the early 20th century compared to pictures of the
same breeds today, showing how selective breeding had changed the dogs in the past century. For
example, it showed the lengthened the back of the dachshund, rounded the skull of the bull terrier,
and the almost frog–like stance of the german sheperd. According to the documentary, vererinary
fees for purebred dogs were costing British owners 10 million pounds a week. "In response to the
documentary, the Kennel Club commissioned an independent study led by Cambridge University
professor emeritus Sir Patrick Bateson. The resulting report largely confirmed the documentary's
findings, which concluded that inbreeding, selecting for extreme characteristics, and the practices of
mass breeding facilities known as puppy mills were negatively impacting dog welfare" (The

If we banned every breed that ever bit or did something wrong there would not be any dogs left
because dogs of every breed will bite if provoked. It may not be fatal, but they still will bite
depending on the situation. In Montreal they placed "a law that would prevent residents from
adopting or buying pit bulls and would have required anyone who already owns one of the dogs to
register the animal (Hauser 1)". According to an article in The New York Times this was because a
woman was fatally mauled by a dog in June. This woman was 55 years old and was bitten and
killed, the police officer said that a neighbor found the woman dead in a backyard. The dog was shot
and killed because the police said that the dog was too aggressive for the officers to approach. The
police also said that "he did not know the breed of the dog (Hauser 2)". It says that "The bylaw
requires owners to pay higher fees for the animal than for non–pitbull types (Hauser 1)". Owners
will also have to go through a criminal background check and the dog must keep a muzzle on
outside even when they are inside fenced in yards. They suspended this law at a later date because
the judge (Louis Gouin) "considered a request from the Montreal Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals to throw them out (Hauser 2)". Pit bulls are the most targeted breed in the nation
because of their blocky heads and square jaws and because of their reputation in pop culture. They
have been portrayed as overly aggressive towards humans or as natural–born fighters and guard
dogs. Videos on the internet do not help their case and neither does making them dogfight which just
increases their aggressiveness towards people and other dogs. Other factors like insurance company

Persuasive Essay On Purebred Animals
Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals get euthanized. 1.5 million innocent animals
die each year because we can't provide a home for them. With all of these animals in shelters we still

not no kill shelters lead to animals getting euthanized.
One thing that I think needs to stop is breeding. Breeding is particularly a bigger issue with dogs vs
other animals. I know people don't want to stop breeding completely because they want to keep the
purebred animals, but what they do know about is all the health issues that come. According to the
article "The Truth About Purebred Dogs" purebred animals are more likely to have crippling bone

drastically shorten a dog's life, endocrine system diseases like hypothyroidism and diabetes, seizure
disorders such as epilepsy, skin diseases that cause frantic itching, digestive disorders that cause
chronic diarrhea and vomiting, kidney and liver diseases, blood–clotting diseases, and cancer is the

These breeds are usually purebred dogs because new owners do research on different types of dogs
to find the best match for their families. What they do not know is that most shelters do carry

specific rescue shelters that are available for ever breed of dog there is. Not only do people associate
the factor of purebreds being associated with private breeders, but they believe the myth of dogs
from breeders being a superiority as well. "Consumers looking for a new family pet are willing to
pay exuberant amounts of money for a purebred dog because they are told that the puppy has been
raised in a loving environment and will grow up to have a friendly disposition with minimal health
problems," (Henn). These customers are under the assumption that because they are being raised by
one person in an open place, they automatically are free from behavioral and health issues, when
this is not the case at all. This myth has been around since breeders began, and they will not deny
this either because it gets them more money and customers. Yet, this could not possibly be true

The most distinguishing traits that the Arabian breed has are its head, neck, back, and tail. They have

compatible with children. If you have young kids and want to find a dog that they can spend hours

like–minded, fun–loving nature of younger humans. The Puggle also easily makes friends with other
dogs and is simply an easygoing animal. These dogs are conveniently small in stature and can come
in a huge range of colors and forms. This variety is a common attribute of crossbreeds, as each
individual pup's appearance will depend on his parents.

This trait is usually inherited from the Beagle side of the parentage and can be a bit of an obstacle

very obedient and well–behaved Puggle. Early socialization will also greatly help this dog to learn
more about people and other animals.
Puggles get along well with other dogs and don't tend to take much interest in cats or other animals.
This means that they can usually be quite safely introduced to homes that contain other pets, but
human supervision is still recommended to begin with. It also needs to be emphasized that Puggles
need attention. If they are left alone or ignored, these dogs can become sad and bored. This sort of
miserable mood can make the dog indulge in destructive behavior or develop certain bad habits like

they are involved in other than racing. The main sports other than racing are jumping, dressage, and
hunting. Show jumping is when horse and rider compete in a competition to complete a course of
jumps without error and quickly. Dressage is when the horse and rider do patterns in an arena and
the rider is able to make the horse look like it is dancing. This is one of the most difficult things that
you can train a horse to do. Hunting or hunter jumping is when the horse and rider compete in a long
cross country jumping course. This can be very intense and very hard because it is also judged with
how many errors you have and the speed you complete the course in (Blocksdorf

Mixed Breeds Vs Purebreds
For the past couple centuries, dogs have been a large part of human everyday life. We use them as
pets, friends, helping hands (paws), etc.; they've become an essential part of our lives and we don't
mind that. With a total of 525 million dogs in the world (as of 2012), people have responsibilities of
caring for another living creature everywhere. When it comes to picking one of these companions
that we know will only be around for a little over a decade (about a tenth of our lives!), people can
get very curious about the differences between mixed dog breeds and purebred dogs. While there are
quite a number of differences between mixed and purebred, it's up to dog owners to care accordingly
and know what these differences truly mean.
Dog breeding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The different jobs offered that relate to mixed dogs include Breeders, Shelter workers and owners,
behaviorists, etc. These are all important to families and their dogs in different ways, whether it be
to give homes to dogs, train them, etc. Speaking of dog shelters, it's been concluded that around
75% of total shelter dogs are usually mixed. If anything, they're providing jobs for people
worldwide without even knowing! Also, mixed dogs are usually priced with more expensive tags
because of their healthier states (compared to purebred dogs). Finally, an example of how mixed dog
breeds have found their way into a different workplaces in through their backgrounds. Cattle
herding, guarding, sensing illegal drugs, etc. are all different small jobs that certain mixed breeds are
given because of their special

Dog Breed Specific Legislation Essay
Dog Breed Specific Legislation Imagine someone has just moved to a different town and the
townspeople decide that the person that just came to town is a threat, so the town creates rules that
say the new person is not allowed to do certain things or go to certain places. This is how I suspect
the following dog breeds feel nowadays: Pit Bull, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Jack Russell
Terrier, Spaniel, Collie, Saint Bernard, and Labrador Retriever. A lot of people feel strongly for our
furry friends and when they found out about this legislation they wanted it shut down completely.
Dog Breed Specific Legislation is a problem that not many people know about and I wanted to make
it known to hopefully help stop this controversy. We should not legislate ... Show more content on

Using the death based approach, 66 out of 76 of the Pit bull type were purebreds and the rest were
crossbreeds, 17 out of 27 were purebreed German Shepherd dogs, 7 out of 8 were purebreed Saint
Bernards, and 1 out of 5 were Labrador Retrievers (Stacks et al. 838). The rest of the totals were
cross breeds. Using the dog–based approach, 98 out of 118 were purebred Pit bull–type, 24 out of 41
were German Shepherd, and 7 out of 8 were purebreed Saint Bernard (Stacks et al. 838). Out of all
these studies, they found out that 24% were deaths involved with unrestrained dogs off the owner's
property, 58% were unrestrained dogs on the owner's property, and 17% involved restrained dogs on
the owner's property, and 1% involved a restrained dog off the owner's property (838). This however
can be justified, most of these dogs bite for a reason just like people may lash out on other people if
they are mad or angry. In an article done by the American Veterinary Medical Association they said
that " Based on behavioral assessments and owner surveys the breeds that were more aggressive
towards people were small to medium– sized dogs (2)". They mentioned that since they are small
they are less likely to inflict serious bite injuries. Pit bull owners deal with dogs with a strong breed
stigma, which basically means that they need more time to be played with and attention to them.
They are the ones that get the most attention when they are on news stations because they are a
bigger breed and the

Tips For A New Puppy Or Dog Home

  • 1. Tips For A New Puppy Or Dog Home When you bring a new puppy or dog home and you plan on keeping it inside most of the time you are going to have to puppy proof your home. Otherwise you may return to a disaster after being gone for work or a night out. Here are some tips to help. Before you bring your dog home remove anything at ground level you want to keep. This can include shoes, game controllers, lamp cords or anything that is below a 4 foot level. The reason for this is because your dog will think that anything in its reach is a toy, worth eating or chewing up into shreds. Any paper, magazines, clothes or other normal objects that people have in their home should be put up on a shelf or placed inside a closed closet. There is no getting around this because if you leave your dog unattended inside your home it will surely get separation anxiety and start to chew, tear or shred anything in its reach. Make sure that lower level cabinets have child–proof latches on them and never leave cabinets that contain cleaning solutions or furniture wax open after each use. Even if you plan on leaving your dog outside when you leave you will still have to keep an eye on it when you are home. Make sure that you reward good behavior with a treat or lots of loving attention and bad behavior with a stern "NO". You shouldn 't beat or injure your pet but a medium swat on the rump or nose with a loosely rolled paper will help in getting the dogs attention. If you find yourself in a situation where the dog has destroyed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Pros And Cons Of Purebred Dogs The cost between breeder and shelters differs by a significant amount. If the dog comes from a breeder and is a purebred it can be more costly because you are getting a good dog that has the potential to be used for dog shows or they could be bred to work. E: In the article "The pros and cons of purebred dogs" The author, Kelly Sundstrom, states that "Only purebred dogs are allowed to compete in American Kennel Club–sponsored dog shows. As such, if you're interested in participating in these types of events, you should choose a purebred over a mixed breed." This means if the dog is being adopted for show or anything related, than a purebred is going to be the dog to chose. Otherwise, When buying a dog from a breeder the general cost can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the article "why you should adopt a shelter animal" the author, Emilie Plesset states that "the financial cost for adopting a shelter animal is almost always less than purchasing an animal from a breeder". The costs for health benefits such as having the dog spayed or neutered , having the dog microchipped and all necessary vaccinations are all included on the cost of a shelter dog. This is all important to consider when looking to find the perfect pet to add to a family. A purebred dog from a breeder could encounter some health issues as it begins to grow. Many breeders breed the dogs so they will have certain features. When this happens it makes the breed more prone to some diseases that could fluctuate the dogs lifespan. In the article " Problems common to purebred dogs" it states that, "The main problem with purebreds stems from the simple fact that to create a purebred puppy you need two dogs from the exact same gene pool. This gene pool is already limited, but many breeders will use dogs from the same family gene pool to create more dogs (inbreeding)." • 9. Kennel Club Research Paper Although some would have you believe that the prevalence of genetic disorders in these dogs is exaggerated, much evidence points the other way. Some estimates claim up to 25% of dogs registered in the American Kennel Club have some genetic complication. (Lemonick, np.) Since American Kennel Club breed standards only pertain to physical appearance, dogs with unseen problems are allowed to pass on these defects, so long as exteriorly they conform to expectations. Because if this, vast amounts of medical conditions are becoming increasingly common among registered dogs. As the arbiter of purebred dog breeding, the American Kennel Club has a heightened responsibility to help protect the health of the breeds they represent. Despite this, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By looking at historical paintings, drawing, and photographs, we can see what various breeds have looked like in the past. To draw on an earlier example, pugs, as seen in paintings from their initial rise to fame, hade much more pronounced muzzles. Their faces weren't as flattened as modern pugs. Their eyes were less "bugged". They had longer legs, and a slimmer body. All of these features contributed to avoiding the health problems common today. By looking at how pugs have appeared in the past, and revising the breed standard with those historical examples in mind, the American Kennel Club can strike a happy medium between modern aesthetics and historic health. This solution would work well for many breed currently experiencing suboptimal quality of life, and could be very effective at halting and reversing the negative changes of modern conformation ... • 13. Purebred Dog Research Paper According to the Humane Society of the United States, every year about 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the U.S. due to overcrowded shelters. This enormous number could go down, if more people choose to adopt their animals. Many people, however, are more selective in the kind of dogs they want. They may desire a specific breed of dog with a known lineage, rather than the mixed breed dog one is likely to find at a shelter. Owning a purebred dog can be good; you get exactly what you wanted, and you can select for specific skills or temperaments you wish for in your dog. There are also several drawbacks to purebred dogs. To maintain a breed means that most of the dogs are going to be from a small number of founder dogs, or, as is often the case with breeders, the dogs are all likely ... • 17. Morgan Horse Research Papers Every young girl grows up wishing her parents would buy her a pony. Riding horses is a passion that many people share. Riding a horse can provide a freedom unlike anything else. The bonds between horse and rider can become so strong it is amazing they cannot talk. There are two types of breeds that stand out among the rest: The Morgan horse and the Arabian. These two breeds are unlike any other because of their size, yet they are also some of the most hard–working, free– spirited horses bred. The Morgan breed is intelligent, willing and eager. Morgans are known for their upright necks, distinctive dished faces, and their wildly expressive eyes. They are small, compact horses with a lot of muscle ("Morgan Breed Description"). The Arabian breed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is not a proven fact, yet it is thought that the colt's mother was an Arabian and father was a Thoroughbred. Justin Morgan named him Figure, and although Figure was not as big as most the other horses Justin worked with, he proved to be the strongest. Justin entered Figure into races also; he was much smaller but almost always finished first. Word spread of this little horse's glory and many started to breed their mares with this outstanding Stallion. And the breed was named after the owner who started it all, Justin Morgan ("The History of the Morgan Horse"). Now the Arabian horse has a very different background. The Arabian is the oldest known breed of horse. They are said to have come from the deserts of the Middle East. They are now one of the most wanted breeds in America. They lived along the Arabian Peninsula, bred by the Bedouins as war horses that could make long journeys or quick escapes. Because of the harsh conditions in the desert, they grew large lungs and indescribable endurance for any animal (Welcome to Arabian Horses.org – Education). The Morgan may have been part Arabian, which ties these two breeds together (The History of the Morgan Horse). Both are small, yet have never–ending production of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although, these horses have been bred so carefully, they have been bred together to get a faster horse, but also great for show. Thoroughbreds are bred for their speed. They're known as the "English Horse," because they evolved in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries. Thoroughbreds were named because of the way they were bred. They were called "thoroughbreds" because they were purebred. "The name , "Thoroughbred," is a direct translation of the Arabic word Kehilan ("IHWT Irish Horse Welfare Trust")." The origin of the breeding of thoroughbred back in the ancient times was found that the three main descendants weren't very fast horses. The gene that made these horses so quick came from an anonymous mare that was raced more than 300 years ago. They think that this mare may have been part or mostly Shetland. Thoroughbreds are often described as the highest class of light horse imaginable. "The Irish Thoroughbred has won many major races throughout the world ("IHWT Irish Horse Welfare Trust")." Thoroughbreds are usually about 16 hands tall, (1 hand is equal to 3 feet). They are long and sleek, with long legs which allows them to move quickly. Their most common colors would be brown, bay, chestnut, and black. They have a straight profile and all though they have Arabian ancestors, they do not show any of their distinct profiles. • 25. The Cold Animal War Essay The cold animal war There is a fight that has been made public and has steadily been growing. The fight or war as I like to call it, is should animal mills be dealt away with or should they stay where they are? I hear constantly that I should not by an animal from a mill. I am told that we have enough animals in this world. Here is the thing though lots of people enjoy getting a new animal. Especially if that animal is a "pure breed". So the argument ensues. There are two clear sides, one side says we should only adopt animals and get them neutered/spayed. The other side says we should be able to buy our pets without anything stopping us. Both sides have valid points, but we should voice our own questions. Like does buying an animal from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Breeding an animal is said to be better all around. You have a knowledge of who is the parents to this animal and how they were treated. You know if the animal age and you know what kind of health risk you may get from the animal. Breeding is said to be superior to adopting and one of those reasons said is that by breeding an animal the animal is pure bred. By having a pure bred animal you can breed more like that animal. You have papers that say your animal is pure bred. Being pure bred is kind of like being an upper class citizen. You get treated better, you get better food, and animal health is treated similar to a humans. Breeders will even tell you around the age your animal will be able to live up to. This is because you have a healthy pure bred animal. You can sell the animal for higher profit. Money makes a big difference and when you can make a profit on animals be it dog shows to selling dairy cows. For example, we know there is such a thing as high quality animals. Especially in our food. One of the most bragged about pure breeding is that the animal is better around. Stronger, higher quality, and less likely to die at a young age. Con–side breeding animals Breeding animals can be harsh for the animals. They could be bred into an animal mill where they are cooped up in cages all day and never get to go out. The animal like chickens, dogs, or cats, etc. Can be bred massively. This is all to have higher production. Which means more money. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Selective Breeding Vs. Natural Selection Selective breeding has been used for many years to achieve the expression of desired traits in animals and plants. Similar to natural selection, humans have developed artificial selection where humans select the most desirable traits instead of the environment, this is what's known as selective breeding. But in fact selective breeding does not select for the fittest phenotype like in natural selection it actually selects for the most desirable phenotypes which may cause harm to the individual. Natural selection selects against harmful alleles as they are disadvantageous to the individual and possibly restricts its ability to survive till the age of sexual reproduction thus not being able to pass on this harmful gene, whereas selective breeding selects for harmful alleles if seen desirable. Selective breeding involves breeding organisms based on their phenotypes so that the desired traits are passed onto successive generations, these desired alleles then increase (in frequency) in the gene pool. This has a large commercial benefit as animal and crop products now contain higher quality meat, quantity of milk, quality of wool, larger fruits etc. The goal of selective breeding in animals is to either produce a pure breed (a breed that will consistently produce offspring with the desired traits or to simply improve the quality of the desired trait/phenotype (homozygous). This is achieved by inbreeding (where two closely related individuals mate and produce offspring) In selective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. What Is Mendel's Ability To Cross-Pollinate Purebred Peas? Gregor Mendel was a European monk, born in the year 1822. Though his work was little known in his century, they are now the widely known base principles of genetics. Mendel studied genetics with plants, but his principles are the same for people and animals. Heredity works the same for almost all complex life. Good ol' Gregor studied heredity and hybridization with a group of pea plants. This is because peas are easy to grow in large numbers and have both male and female reproductive organs. That makes it possible for the plants to cross–pollinate or self–pollinate. In his experiments, Mendel selectively cross–pollinated purebred peas with certain characteristics and note the outcome of each generation of plants. Mendel discovered that if he bred one plant that had only yellow seeds, with another that only had green seeds, the first generation of offspring always has yellow seeds. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The result is that new combinations of genes present in neither parent are possible. For example, a pea plant's inheritance of the ability to produce purple flowers instead of white ones does not make it more likely that it will also inherit the ability to produce yellow pea seeds in contrast to green ones. Likewise, the principle of independent assortment explains why the human inheritance of a particular eye color does not increase or decrease the likelihood of having 6 fingers on each hand. Today, we know this is due to the fact that the genes for independently assorted traits are located on different chromosomes." In the end, Mendel's discoveries changed how we thought about inheritance of traits. Those discoveries formed today's basic principles of genetics and heredity. Mendel's principles are pretty important as without them, no one would know why we had different colored eyes or hair. They had a big impact on the scientific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Inbreeding and extreme breed standards lower the quality of life for purebred dogs (Rooney and Sargan). Puppy mills, despite government crackdown, continue to operate and sell ill, disfigured dogs (Solotaroff). Breeding purebred dogs only for profit and not for the wellbeing of the dog, is unethical, because of puppy mills, dog defects due to this kind of breeding, and dog quality of life. Firstly, the number one reason why purebred breeding purely for profit is unethical: puppy mills. As anyone who has seen a televised dog show can attest, some dogs are deformed in disturbing ways. One might look at the "excessively wrinkled skin of the Chinese Shar–Pei," the "the flat face of a bulldog," or the "low–slung eyelids of a Bloodhound" (PBS), and think, "That can not be healthy." The fact of the matter is that these deformities are far from healthy. As the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) points out, the Shar–Pei's skin (due to it's "excessively wrinkled" nature) is prone to skin infections, the Bloodhound's droopy eyes are practically magnets for eye infection, and the Bulldog's face is so squished that it can never breathe correctly. While these deformities may be more obvious, overly large or small pedigree dogs have their own slew of health problems (Rooney and Sargan). As Rooney and Sargan disclose, very small dogs (known as toy breeds) often have dislocated kneecaps, heart problems, and trouble staying warm. Big dogs, such as Great Danes, can suffer from heat prostration and orthopedic issues (Rooney and Sargan). According to Rooney and Sargan, almost every purebred breed of dog is more likely to have at least one genetic disease compared to mixed breeds. However, physical problems are not the only thing purebred dogs have to face: behavioral problems are also more prevalent in certain breeds (Rooney and Sargan). Rooney and Sargan reveal that ... There are countless different breeds of horses in our world today, two of which that are most commonly known: thoroughbreds and quarter horses. These two breeds are similar in a few ways but different in several ways, including how they look, how they act, and what they do. It's similar to comparing two different breeds of dogs; of course there are similarities between them, but there are also many differences. First of all, these two breeds of horses are both on the bigger side of the spectrum when it comes to typical horse size. Most, however, would say that quarter horses fall closer to the middle, but really it just depends on the genetics of the horse. The average quarter horse height ranges between 14 and 16 hands. This is why there's such a huge breed difference when one compares the types of horses used for different disciplines. Both thoroughbreds and quarter horses are very versatile athletes. Quarter horses are great for jumping, barrel racing, trail riding, western pleasure, and slow paced riding because of their stockier build. • 49. Genetic Disorders: Mixed Vs. Purebred Dogs The purpose of evolution is to pass on traits that are the most beneficial to a species which makes them more likely to survive. Artificial selection or "selective breeding" disrupts this process, causing terrible side effects. This is because the purpose of pure breeding is to give the dog a desired appearance, not functionality. To breed a purebred puppy you need two dogs from the same gene pool. This gene pool is already limited, but many breeders will use dogs from the same family gene pool to breed more dogs. Additionally, dog clubs often require that their dogs be bred within the same club, which again ends up severely limiting the gene pool variety. Other previously recorded genetic defects include an increased chance of tumors, bone disorders, and a variety of neurological diseases. A 2013 study at Bellumori et al used medical records from the veterinary clinic at UC Davic for more than 27,000 dogs. As my dog who I received as a Christmas presents in 2011 turned out to be my best friend who helped me survive high school and now on to college. Hes name is Beast and he is a very caring, playable, friendly, and most of all loyal dog, and yes he is a bulldog/pitbull mix. I would've loved to bring him here to Tucson with me, but I live in an area where the pitbull breed is prohibited and are labelled as "Dangerous dogs". Which is understandable as pit bulls are very protective of their owners, yet I do not believe that they are dangerous dogs due to the love that have for their owners. As pit bulls are not so friendly when it comes to their kind, but it is a different story with humans as they display characteristics of being playful, and caring. So although pit bulls can be aggressive they should not be banned from communities In Tucson due to bad stereotypes, bad owners, and the experiences I shared with my pitbulls. Stereotypes usually are known to affect their topic of discussion, as they often express a negative viewpoint. Whether it be towards a race of people, a type of food, or a type of animal. Like how our stereotypes are often relatable when it comes to objectifying a race of people or a breed of dogs. Such as pit bulls a breed of dogs that are highly profiled as "aggressive dogs" it is stereotypes like this that affect such a good dog breed. Yet, this did not stop Prime Minister John Major of Great Britain to comment "Such dogs have no place in our home" and putting more than 10,000 pit bulls on death row(. Because pitbulls are not dangerous, as Dobermans, Rottweilers, Great Danes, and German Shepherds are known as frequent bitter. Yet, people tend to exaggerate and explode the media when a dog bite and/or attack was done by a pit bull. (Gladwell 1) Or they get the name that pitbulls are not a family dog, as they were believed to first be used for Bull Baiting and Dogfighting but before that pit bulls were often used as babysitters for children.(Stevens 1) So although a pitbull can be known for its "aggressive behavior" or "untamed tendencies" yet, the characteristics missed are the stereotypes that should be mentioned ... Today, humans are not fully taking care of their companions, and because of that they are now suffering from diseases that cause major problems that could have been avoided. With the strict breeding standards given to dogs, we are predisposing them to genetic disorders that would have never had the possibility of showing up. The problem lays in the fact that not many dog owners do not know the potential health obstacles that their newly purchased purebred may have to face. Sometimes, breeders don't know the extent of the negative side effects of their specific trait breeding because they are not the ones having to raise the sick, temperamental dog; but more times than not they do not care about the problems that will ensue, because they have become normal over the years, and are now expected. The administrators that make the regulations for Kennel Clubs and the breeders that follow the standards are the main contributors to the increase of health issues and decrease of animal welfare in dogs, this is because they rather devote their time refining one specific quality that is deemed desirable, rather than the overall health of the animal. In order to tackle the issue of canine welfare, it is important to go over what animal welfare is and how selection pressure affects different types of dogs, and how that overall effects the health of the dog. The process is repeated over many generations until the characteristic becomes common. Selective breeding now often uses reproductive technologies, such as artificial insemination and marker assisted selection, so that the desirable characteristics of one male can be passed onto many offspring. This increases the rate at which the desirable trait is passed to progeny. Marker assisted selection is a molecular technique used to screen a genome for genetic markers that indicate desirable traits. (*1). In these times, farmers selectively bred sheep to make them grow fleece from 'nose to their toes' and thicker coats. They did this thinking that the sheep having a heavier fleece would bring them greater returns. Because the sheep had so much wool, this meant more work for the farmers due to them having to dag and crutch the sheep where the wool becomes dirty. This added to production costs and this wool has lower value so farmers have started selectively breeding sheep so they only have wool in the areas that are going to be worth the most money and get them the best returns possible. 'Their aim was to remove all the unnecessary parts of the sheep and fleece to create sheep that were more productive and easier and cheaper to maintain – 'easy care' sheep.' (3*). Easy–care sheep have been selectively bred to have the traits of bare backside, bare belly, bare legs, short tail and bare head. These traits, such as bare backside and short tail reduce dags which therefore reduces the risk of them getting fly–strike, flies are attracted to the dags. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats. The lowest price we've seen is 800 dollars and one of the highest is $2,000. The rate rises once you add up initial cost, vet bills (more visits are required than a mutt), and training lessons. Training however can be easier. You know the troubles you could run into with training them since you know the exact breed. With mutts it's much harder because it's a mixture of breeds. I know people love the look of purebreds, but that's about all they're getting. I realize people keep creating more dogs because they want what they want, but there's already a surplus of them. And honestly, I used to think that too, but then I found a mixed–breed dog I really clicked with. Mixed–breed dogs are better in the sense that they're healthier and more affordable. When you mix two or more separate gene pools, the recessive genes that carry the health problems are buried. As a result, you get a healthier animal. Simply put, mixed–breed dogs are, in general, healthier than their purebred cousins" ("PHS/SPCA" 1). It has been proven that purebred dogs are incredulously more expensive than mixed breeds. The starting cost of the dog, the maintaining and up keep, and the constant trips to the vet are all examples of the expense one would go through while owning a purebred ("PHS/SPCA" 1). • 81. Persuasive Essay On Dog Breeding For being man's supposed best friend, humans too often make choices to benefit themselves instead of dogs. People decide what traits make a dog cute and disregard what traits make them healthy. Dog breeding is a harmful practice for dogs both biologically and culturally due to superficial standards. These dogs are bred to be cute, but that cuteness can inadvertently carry a gene that can lead to disease, or even the cuteness itself could be debilitating, such as with the poster pug's flat face makes breathing significantly more difficult. Dogs are living, breathing creatures and the standards set for their reproduction should factor their well–being into the standard of the dog. Dog breeding is dangerous because to make a perfect dog they too often inbreed and cause birth defects and other health issues in dogs. Terry Allen, an "In These Times" senior editor who has written the magazine's monthly investigative health and science column since 2006, argues in "We're Breeding Dogs to Death" that "neither price, pedigree nor being loved like a member of the family can shield a dog from the pain, breathing difficulties, cancer, panoply of debilitating genetic disorders, mental illness, crippling physiognomy and shortened life span that disproportionately plague purebreds." So while you may be questioning the cultural relevance of a purebred dog to any culture, people are out there as we speak spending hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars on a dog that is no better than either of my free, mixed breed dogs. So why are people paying so much money for dogs, just because they have a few papers proving that both the mother and father are of the same breed? Being that Caucasian is the largest race of people in the United States, and always has been, people typically think of Americans as white. It is just like how we think of Africans as black, Asians as light brown, and every Hispanic person comes from Mexico. That is not the case but that is a lot of people's way of thinking. Getting back on track, white people tend to own more pure bred dogs because we are the ones who have this fear of the outside world. The whites have historically not always been so kind to those who are outside of their group (for example: the Native Americans and African Americans), and they tend to be the ones with the isolationist values. As to where anyone that is of the lower class in America usually has or wants purebred pit bulls. • 97. The Importance of Purebred Dogs by Babette Haggerty Take a moment and picture a dog in your head. What do you see? You may see many different things depending on your own personal encounters with the species. There are many types of dogs out there. Some small, some large, long–haired or short–haired. There are many variances in what a dog can look like. One thing that does not change, or should not change, is the importance for every dog in this world to be given love and affection, no matter its characteristics. This is what leads me to believe that the obsession with producing and owning purebreds needs to come to a halt. Continuing to create these so–called "best dogs" is dangerous to not only the purebred's health, but also devalues mixed breeds and can cost them their lives in animal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They look at the dog's pure genes as a guide to knowing the dog's characteristics and personalities comparable to that specific breed. Something they aren't remembering is that genes carry health issues as well, and in reality purebreds are more susceptible to genetic diseases than mixed breeds. Veterinarian and blogger, Dr. Patty Khuly, claims that she "generally observe[s] at least one genetic disease in nine out of 10 purebred patients during their first examination (Khuly)." That's at least one disease in 99% of the purebreds that she is personally examining. The reason mixed–breeds are less likely to face these issues is because they derive from different breeds of dogs and "when you mix two or more separate gene pools, the recessive genes that carry the health problems are buried ("Why Mixed Breeds")." Simply put by a blogger from Global Animal, "genetic diversity in dogs leads to healthier, stronger individuals (Armentano)." Although I agree that it could be helpful to know how a dog is expected to act and the skills it should have, I feel what is most important and what people really should be concerned with is the health of the dog, rather than knowing the expected characteristics. According to what I have researched mixed–breeds are just healthier than purebred dogs and I think that is something that should definitely be noted. Selective breeding is the process in which human beings breed animals to produce desired traits in the offspring. Eventually dogs were being bred less for the ability to work and more for how the animals looked. Selective breeding does have its own benefits. The clubs keep track of the dogs and their lineage, which is helpful for telling if the dog has any family history of disease. It could be anywhere from breeding dogs with strong noses to breeding dogs for a specific color in the dogs coat. Carrie Allan from the Humane Society says that dogs were first selectively bred to be better at whatever job was required (2010). These jobs were predominately hunting but also branched into other areas like sheep herding. Owners wanted dogs that were best suited to chase foxes or crawl into rabbit holes, and when one dog showed aspects that would help with the job, that dog was bred with others that showed similar traits. Eventually the dogs were being bred less for the ability to work and more for how the animals looked. Breeders stopped choosing animals that could run fast and started choosing animals that had extra fluffy hair or a long curled tail. Dogs ended up becoming massive or miniscule, bald or furry, long or short. Dog owners wanted animals that fit their ideal of the perfect pet. Tea–cup canines became increasingly popular in the search for the perfect lap dog, while dogs like Mastiffs and Great Danes were bred for their enormous size. Standards for dog breeds and qualifications for a dog to be considered purebred are set by kennel clubs. Kennel clubs, such as the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, and the Kennel Club (UK), are organizations that make money by registering dogs as purebred. Some people might want a purebred because only purebreds can compete in most dog shows, which are sponsored by kennel clubs. If people really want a dog that is considered purebred, kennel clubs like the AKC need to change standards for dog breeds to encourage healthy dogs, but the only way that is going to happen is if their is a public push for it. It has happened before. In 2008, a documentary called Purebred Dogs Exposed was televised in Great Britain. It was critical of the Kennel Club, the British equivalent of the AKC, and showed purebreds with a range of health problems. The documentary showed that the 2003 champion of the country's most prestigious dog show, Crufts, was a Pekingese who had to be photographed sitting on ice blocks because his flat face made his breed so prone to overheating. The film also showed pictures of certain breeds in the early 20th century compared to pictures of the same breeds today, showing how selective breeding had changed the dogs in the past century. For example, it showed the lengthened the back of the dachshund, rounded the skull of the bull terrier, and the almost frog–like stance of the german sheperd. According to the documentary, vererinary fees for purebred dogs were costing British owners 10 million pounds a week. "In response to the documentary, the Kennel Club commissioned an independent study led by Cambridge University professor emeritus Sir Patrick Bateson. The resulting report largely confirmed the documentary's findings, which concluded that inbreeding, selecting for extreme characteristics, and the practices of mass breeding facilities known as puppy mills were negatively impacting dog welfare" (The Purebred Paradox Part 2). If we banned every breed that ever bit or did something wrong there would not be any dogs left because dogs of every breed will bite if provoked. It may not be fatal, but they still will bite depending on the situation. In Montreal they placed "a law that would prevent residents from adopting or buying pit bulls and would have required anyone who already owns one of the dogs to register the animal (Hauser 1)". According to an article in The New York Times this was because a woman was fatally mauled by a dog in June. This woman was 55 years old and was bitten and killed, the police officer said that a neighbor found the woman dead in a backyard. The dog was shot and killed because the police said that the dog was too aggressive for the officers to approach. The police also said that "he did not know the breed of the dog (Hauser 2)". It says that "The bylaw requires owners to pay higher fees for the animal than for non–pitbull types (Hauser 1)". Owners will also have to go through a criminal background check and the dog must keep a muzzle on outside even when they are inside fenced in yards. They suspended this law at a later date because the judge (Louis Gouin) "considered a request from the Montreal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to throw them out (Hauser 2)".
