Lesson Plan Template <br />based on Understanding by Design by Jay McTighe and  Grant Wiggins<br />Title of Lesson: Hammurabi’s  Code of Laws Author: June CavanaughGrade Level: 6th Grade Social Studies School: Washington Middle SchoolTime Estimated: Two 45 minute class periods<br />Brief OverviewStudent’s will examine Hammurabi’s Code of Laws and compare and contrast Ancient law with modern law. Historical Inquiry QuestionHow are Ancient laws different from present day laws? Are there any similarities between Ancient laws and present day laws? Why do we use a law system to govern ourselves? Content Knowledge/ObjectivesLesson Objectives: Students will be able to compare and contrast today’s code of laws with Hammurabi’s Code of laws. Students will be able to examine a primary source and retrieve important and relevant information from that source. Students will be able to explain why laws are important, whether they are Ancient or modern. Content Knowledge: See CT Standard section. SkillsRetrieving approach and accurate information from a primary source. Synthesizing and understanding primary source information. Comparing and contrasting ancient law and modern law and understanding their major differences. CT Standards AddressedContent Standard 1.3Content Standard 1.7Content Standard 1.8 Content Standard 2.2Prior KnowledgeStudents have completed lessons on other Ancient Civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Egypt. Students are familiar with the code of laws and governmental bodies of previously studied Ancient Civilizations. Students have completed a lesson on Babylon. Students have briefly discussed Hammurabi and Hammurabi’s Code Laws. Resources NeededPrimary Source: Hammurabi’s Code of Laws. Smart board/ White dry erase board. HighlightersMarkers Pencils/Pens/Paper Process of LessonClass One:Initiation: students will be asked to respond to the following journal question written on the board: “Pretend you are in charge of a country. Write down five important laws you would want in your country. Why did you choose these laws?”Students will share some of their responses to the journal question. Review background information of Hammurabi and his Code of Laws. Guided reading activity: As a class, students will read Hammurabi’s code of laws. The teacher will stop every so often to review the laws discussed. During this review time, students will highlight the most important information from their primary source, and write in key words and phrases to help them understand the text.Closure: ask students questions from today’s lesson and review important information. Class Two:Initiation: review relevant information from previous class, vocabulary review. Compare and contrast activity: After guided reading, students will then compare modern laws with Hammurabi’s laws. The teacher will guide discussion during this time. Students will learn how and why laws are different today, and why Hammurabi’s laws might not work in today’s society. Discussion: Which code of laws is better? Why? Closure: Exit slip activity: Students will complete an exit slip before they leave the classroom. The exit slip contains 5 questions from today’s lesson. Students need to be able to accurately answer each question. If there is time, the teacher can discuss before students leave. EvaluationMonitor class discussion Participation in activity Journal question- graded on a V+, V, V- system. BehaviorPossibilities for DifferentiationExtra time provided for slower readers. Revised Hammurabi’s Code for readers who have a difficult time with Ancient text/language View vocabulary before the beginning of each lesson. <br />

Lesson Plan Template <br />based on Understanding by Design by Jay McTighe and Grant Wiggins<br />Title of Lesson: Hammurabi’s Code of Laws Author: June CavanaughGrade Level: 6th Grade Social Studies School: Washington Middle SchoolTime Estimated: Two 45 minute class periods<br />Brief OverviewStudent’s will examine Hammurabi’s Code of Laws and compare and contrast Ancient law with modern law. Historical Inquiry QuestionHow are Ancient laws different from present day laws? Are there any similarities between Ancient laws and present day laws? Why do we use a law system to govern ourselves? Content Knowledge/ObjectivesLesson Objectives: Students will be able to compare and contrast today’s code of laws with Hammurabi’s Code of laws. Students will be able to examine a primary source and retrieve important and relevant information from that source. Students will be able to explain why laws are important, whether they are Ancient or modern. Content Knowledge: See CT Standard section. SkillsRetrieving approach and accurate information from a primary source. Synthesizing and understanding primary source information. Comparing and contrasting ancient law and modern law and understanding their major differences. CT Standards AddressedContent Standard 1.3Content Standard 1.7Content Standard 1.8 Content Standard 2.2Prior KnowledgeStudents have completed lessons on other Ancient Civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Egypt. Students are familiar with the code of laws and governmental bodies of previously studied Ancient Civilizations. Students have completed a lesson on Babylon. Students have briefly discussed Hammurabi and Hammurabi’s Code Laws. Resources NeededPrimary Source: Hammurabi’s Code of Laws. Smart board/ White dry erase board. HighlightersMarkers Pencils/Pens/Paper Process of LessonClass One:Initiation: students will be asked to respond to the following journal question written on the board: “Pretend you are in charge of a country. Write down five important laws you would want in your country. Why did you choose these laws?”Students will share some of their responses to the journal question. Review background information of Hammurabi and his Code of Laws. Guided reading activity: As a class, students will read Hammurabi’s code of laws. The teacher will stop every so often to review the laws discussed. During this review time, students will highlight the most important information from their primary source, and write in key words and phrases to help them understand the text.Closure: ask students questions from today’s lesson and review important information. Class Two:Initiation: review relevant information from previous class, vocabulary review. Compare and contrast activity: After guided reading, students will then compare modern laws with Hammurabi’s laws. The teacher will guide discussion during this time. Students will learn how and why laws are different today, and why Hammurabi’s laws might not work in today’s society. Discussion: Which code of laws is better? Why? Closure: Exit slip activity: Students will complete an exit slip before they leave the classroom. The exit slip contains 5 questions from today’s lesson. Students need to be able to accurately answer each question. If there is time, the teacher can discuss before students leave. EvaluationMonitor class discussion Participation in activity Journal question- graded on a V+, V, V- system. BehaviorPossibilities for DifferentiationExtra time provided for slower readers. Revised Hammurabi’s Code for readers who have a difficult time with Ancient text/language View vocabulary before the beginning of each lesson. <br />
