This newsletter provides information about upcoming events at KELC in April, including field trips, swimming dates, birthdays, and important dates. It encourages families to donate clothes to the resale shop and protein bars to the Lorain County Free Clinic. It also shares healthy gardening tips for families and highlights from the classrooms in March, including completed studies and a request for pet photos.
1. I am looking forward to the sunshine and rain this month brings as I am “done” with snow! This month we have a great opportunity to
assist the Lorain County Free Clinic in collecting granola and protein bars. I am challenging each family to bring in 2 boxes for each
child they have enrolled at KELC. If you complete the challenge you will be entered in a drawing for a free mystery prize. ☺ The
deadline to bring them is April 15th
, 2015.
Also, we are going to start sharing one activity a month with you that we have pulled from the Gold Online Assessments. These are
activities that you can access and pull to use at home as well. Gold has many benefits to you and your family, and we want to help you
become more aware of what it has to offer.
Enjoy the sunshine this month! Jeni Hoover

April 2015 Newsletter
Healthy Tidbit for the Month:
We’ve rounded up a few basic tips for your family to get started today. Whether
you only grow a few herbs or have an entire garden of fresh vegetables, your
family garden will become a place of fun and knowledge.
• Gardens need an area with plenty of sunlight. They should also be in a place
that’s easy to get to with a sprinkler or garden hose.
• If your garden needs protection from animals, put up a small wire fence to
keep out rabbits, deer and other critters.
• If you live in an apartment or are short on space, grow a garden in planters on
your porch, patio in a windowsill box or try growing a vertical garden.
• Introduce your kids to herbs by planting parsley, chives, mint or dill. This
can even be done indoors near a window.
• Find nearby community gardens for families with children.
• Check out farmers’ markets to learn more about local fruits and vegetables.
• Choose the right plants for your local climate. Some fruits and vegetables
grow better in certain parts of the country than others. When you shop for
plants, ask what grows best in your area. Search online to find in which
“plant hardiness zone” you live.
• Planting and weeding are great activities to get children outdoors. They
create a break from TV, video games and digital tablets. Make sure your kids
leave their smart phones indoors.
• Encourage your family to put their hands in the earth. What may seem like a
chore to you might be a lot of fun for your kids. If your kids are fussy about
getting their hands dirty, there are many children’s gardening gloves and
aprons on the market.
• Be careful when weeding the garden with your kids. Show children how to
gently pull up weeds, taking care that the plants you want to keep are not
harmed.

2. From the KELC Teachers:
From the Classroom:
March was such a busy month filled with four field trips for each group and finishing up our Recycling Study. The children had a good
time going to the Recycling Center and the Lorain County Landfill in Oberlin. They saw the big trucks and how the recyclables are
sorted. We also visited the Western Reserve Historical Society. The children loved riding the carousel and learning about cars from
long ago. At the Natural History Museum we got to see the all the dinosaur bones and explored the mammoths and mastodons exhibit.
We are looking forward to some sunshine in Spring. The children are anxious to get outside again. We will also begin our study on
pets. Please be sure to e-mail or bring in a picture of any pets you may have. We are also looking for books about pets.
The children have been talking a lot lately about where they live, so we are asking that you e-mail or send a picture of your house so that
we may make an address book for the children to enjoy.
Hope everyone has a great month!
