The 9/11 attacks denote a series of coordinated attacks by members of the al-Qaeda in the United States. The incidents changed the American foreign and security policies in the efforts to safeguard domestic and international interests. It is noteworthy that the morning attack caused deaths, injuries, and damages to infrastructure. The perspective of the US citizens and government toward terrorism has changed over time; with more considerable efforts and finances put in place to contain the menace. Since the early 2000s, the US has dramatically concentrated on the fight against terrorism that has rocked and undermined global security. The report examines the environmental, political, economic, and sociological effects of the 9/11 attack. It will also evaluate the responses, lessons, and changes instituted by the policy-makers to deter such an eventuality in the future.
1
On September 11 2001, terrorists believed to be Al-Qaeda attacked the US after hijacking four commercial planes.
The main attack took place at America’s World Trade Centre (WTC).
Commonly referred to as the 9/11 attack, the disaster encompassed four coordinated assaults.
Over 2,990 people died while 6,000 got injured.
The attack caused the destruction of over 10 billion dollars.
The attack is among the worst and highly studied disasters in recent time in the United States of America. According to Rose, Oladosu, Lee, & Asay (2009), the 9/11 attack caused damages to infrastructure; hence, causing business disruptions of WTC firms and government agencies. The economic impacts also capture issues such as employment and business relocation costs. The fear of other attacks increased business risks; hence, pushed away some potential investors.
The attackers hijacked planes and used them to attack the American nation.
1
The rescue efforts started immediately after the WTC was hit by the first plane.
Local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private support groups, were involved in the rescue operations.
The federal government deployed its security agencies such as police, FBI, and the military to assist in the response efforts.
The New York City fire department sent hundreds of fire.

1
On September 11 2001, terrorists believed to be Al-Qaeda
attacked the US after hijacking four commercial planes.
The main attack took place at America’s World Trade Centre
(WTC).
Commonly referred to as the 9/11 attack, the disaster
encompassed four coordinated assaults.
Over 2,990 people died while 6,000 got injured.
The attack caused the destruction of over 10 billion dollars.
The attack is among the worst and highly studied disasters in
recent time in the United States of America. According to Rose,
Oladosu, Lee, & Asay (2009), the 9/11 attack caused damages
to infrastructure; hence, causing business disruptions of WTC
firms and government agencies. The economic impacts also
capture issues such as employment and business relocation
costs. The fear of other attacks increased business risks; hence,
pushed away some potential investors.
The attackers hijacked planes and used them to attack the
American nation.
1
The rescue efforts started immediately after the WTC was hit by
the first plane.
Local, state, and federal agencies, as well as private support
groups, were involved in the rescue operations.
The federal government deployed its security agencies such as
police, FBI, and the military to assist in the response efforts.
The New York City fire department sent hundreds of
firefighters and medical technicians to assist in the rescue
operations.
The police units also took charge of security and traffic flow to
ensure speedy rescue operations.
However, the rescue operations were not properly coordinated
by the officers;
4. hence, jeopardizing the mission.
Some officers died after the WTC building collapsed amid the
initial rescue efforts.
It took close to 8 months to clear the WTC finally.
The 9/11 attack had considerable effects on the American socio-
political systems.
The security agencies involved in the rescue operations lacked
proper command centre.
The problem contributed to a high number of deaths and
injuries.
There were systemic failures and poor coordination with other
essential security agencies such as the CIA and FBI (Mueller &
Stewart, 2012).
The attack revealed that poor coordination between the security
agencies was a great contributor to increased threats in the
country.
The United States changed most of the political, security, and
foreign policies after the 9/11 attack. The government placed
sanctions on countries perceived to sympathize with terrorists.
The political engagements with friendly countries have
improved notably in the sharing of critical information and
resources that aid in the war against terrorism. Also, the attack
caused sociological effects on citizens and people from
different places around the world. Scott & Rettig (2016)
identify that anxiety and sense of insecurity remain in the hearts
of most people in the affected areas. Most people fear for their
safety; with men expressing anger and desire for revenge. On a
positive note, citizens have raised awareness on the need to help
in improving security through the sharing of valuable
information with the law enforcers.
1
The 9/11 attack affected the ethical culture in American society.
The country’s perception of the Arab nations and citizens was
affected negatively.
It is for that reason that many Americans continue to engage
5. cautiously with the Muslims.
The issue has not gone down well the Muslims who have
continued to denounce the treatment by Americans (Halliday,
2013).
The attack resulted in many negative implications on the health
status of citizens.
Smoke, debris, physical and psychological damage on the
people posed a significant challenge to the healthcare system.
Majority of the citizens were affected physically, mentally and
psychologically by effects of terrorist attack hence developed
health complications.
Studies show that while the bulk of citizens exposed to the New
York terrorist attack are healthy and symptom-free, thousands
of citizens suffer various bodily complications.
Notably, post-traumatic stress is the common health impact of
the 9/11 attack (Lee, 2015).
The problem could have resulted from extreme dust exposure,
respiratory complications and little social support.
After the 9/11 attack, many international media tend to portray
Islam negatively by linking them to terrorism. Research
findings from media outlets in the UK and UK show that the
matter has been on extensive debates. It emerges that the
international media outlets aim at labeling Muslims as terrorists
as a means to safeguard their interests (Halliday, 2013). The
message has significantly altered the way the citizens perceive
Muslims in their midst. It is also noteworthy that some security
and government agencies utilize the media to frame news as a
means to curtail the prevalence of terrorism. Some people
believe that the international press has a preference for
reporting terrorist activities in the Middle East and the Gulf
region for lengthy periods. The aim is to link the region with
the promotion of terrorist activities.
Also, the 9/11 attack compelled the legislators to formulate the
Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act to help in setting the
foundation for improving security and reducing vulnerability to
terrorist attacks. The Patriot Act offers the grounds for
6. prevention and punishment of terrorist activities in the United
States. The legislation plays a significant role in improvement
to law enforcement and investigations, including information
and records that can aid in the prevention of terrorism
(Halliday, 2013). Also, the act allows for emergency disclosure
of communications that can help in the protection of life. The
Homeland Security Act focuses much on policies and issues
surrounding domestic security. The policies and legislation
instituted by the government over time have helped in the
prevention of large-scale attacks in the US. The 9/11 attack
compelled the government to formulate measures to help in
improve domestic security. The creation of the US Department
of Homeland Security (DHS) in 2002 was an essential step
toward the prevention of terrorism.
Its formation took significant consideration of the security
threats likely to undermine socio-economic progress and
international reputation as a leading economic powerhouse.
DHS works in close collaboration with other security agencies
such as the CIA and FBI to maintain peace and security. The
primary responsibilities of the agency cover areas such as
border security, anti-terrorism, immigration, and cybersecurity
(Halliday, 2013). The formation of the DHS was informed by
poor coordination, communication, and sharing of information
by the security agencies. Since its establishment, DHS plays a
crucial role in the provision of security in a manner that
safeguards the interests of the US, including resources, critical
infrastructure, and territories.
The 9/11 Commission, under the leadership of Thomas Kean
and Lee Hamilton, presented a series of recommendations to
prevent terrorist attacks in the future. The findings from the
report offer essential lessons to state and non-state actors on
issues such as disaster preparedness and security improvement.
The commission also blamed poor coordination and
communication among security agencies. Therefore, there is a
great need for sharing of security intelligence information to
deter security threats. The attack persuaded changes in air travel
7. and border security (Lee, 2015). Countries around the world
have made significant changes to their security policies and
systems to help in the global efforts in the fight against
terrorism.
Furthermore. Elaborate measures are necessary to mitigate the
adverse effects and make swift emergency responses to the
disaster. Surveillance on the installations is the primary
intervention to prevent the occurrence of a chemical or any
other form of high-scale attack. The government and security
agencies need to collaborate with the operators of the oil
pipelines to secure the systems. Health agencies have a role to
play in meeting the health needs of the victims in case of a
chemical attack. The government has not done enough to
respond to chemical attacks. It is thus important to have
strategies on emergency response services in case of a chemical
attack on oil pipelines.
Inter-agency coordination and communication will assist in the
establishment of functional focal points that address the long-
term mitigation measures. The countermeasures will be
instrumental towards preventing and responding to nuclear,
chemical, biological or radiological attacks. Critical
infrastructures should be properly secured for all nature of
attacks that can have disastrous effects on the environment and
humans.
1
In conclusion, the 9/11 attack had valuable lessons to the US
and the world in general.
Since then, the US has continuously improved its security
surveillance to deter and respond to terrorist threats.
There is a great need for the country to strengthen its
coordination of emergencies that are common in the country.
The move would help in reducing the number of casualties and
damages to infrastructure. The 9/11 attacks offer essential
lessons to governments around the world on the importance of
disaster preparedness and adequate security measures to prevent
8. terrorism
