2. AGENDA I. What are our technology goals? II. How do we know where we are now? III. What is the STaR Chart and what does it mean? IV. How can we improve our STaR Chart levels?
3. Technology Goals The entire educational system must transition into the 21st century by instituting a number of changes. Key to these changes are: 1. Teaching and Learning 2. Educator Preparation and Development3. Leadership Administration, & Instructional Support, and 3. Infrastructure for Technology.
4. Why Change? 1. The current system does not work to engage students. 2. The world is evolving and we need to prepare our students to function in the 21stcentury. 3. Less than 40% of students go on to higher education. 4. Teachers can no longer be “islands unto themselves” in order to be effective and use best practices. 5. Education needs to be flexible and available to students 24/7, inside and outside of school.
5. Where are we now? The STaR chart (http://starchart.esc12.net) was developed to assess school campuses in terms of their progress towards the technology goals of the Long Range Plan for Technology. The STaR Chart was created and began to be used on-line in 2006. The STaR Chart is completed by all teachers on a campus anonymously.
6. STaR Chart for ALC Teaching and Learning We need to use online learning, integrate technology into lessons, and focus on mastery of the Technology Applications TEKS.
7. STaR Chart for ALC We need to incorporate more learner-centered projects.
8. STaR Chart for ALC We need to have more involvement of administration in modeling technology.
9. STaR Chart for ALC We need to add more computers so that students each have their own computers, and add more hand-held devices.
10. Teaching and Learning Target Tech level 1. The teacher acts as facilitator. 2. The students have on-demand access to technology tools. 3. All Technology Applications TEKS are met by students. 4. High school campuses offer at least 4 courses in Technology Applications.
11. Educator Preparation Target Tech Level 1. Regular technology-supported learner-centered projects. 2. Anytime, anywhere use of online resources. 3. Administrators ensure integration of technology. 4. All educators meet SBEC standards. 5. Thirty percent of the campus budget is allocated for professional development.
12. Administration and Support Target Tech Level 1. The campus plan is focused on technology success. 2. There is one technical support for 350 computers. 3. Existence of campus instructional support. 4. Funding.
13. Infrastructure Target Tech Level 1. On-demand access for every student. 2. Direct connectivity available in all classrooms. 3. All rooms are connected to WAN. 4. All rooms fully equipped with appropriate technology.
