Canada lays claim to 243,000 kilometers of
coastline – the longest shoreline of any country
in the world. The Shoreline Cleanup has been
in existence since 2003, and has contributed to
Canada’s environmental health and
sustainability by removing thousands of pounds
of shoreline litter from coastal regions every
year. All litter results from human impact,
including shoreline recreation activities such as
fishing and boating. Litter, especially plastic,
has long-lasting negative effects on shoreline
wildlife and upsets the delicate balance of
coastal ecosystems.

Every year in September, thousands of
volunteers gather across the country to clean
up Canada’s shoreline. Jay Trends
Merchandising focused its 2010 volunteer
efforts in the province of Quebec, where the
company is headquartered. In Quebec, almost
3,000 volunteers removed more than 15,000
cigarette butts, 5,000 food wrappers, and 4,000
plastic bags from 132 kilometers of coastline.
