2. MANGROVES
Mangroves are an intermediate vegetation between land and sea that grow in oxygen
oxygen deficient waterlogged soils which have Hydrogen Sulfide. They perform
perform important ecological functions like nutrient cycling, hydrological regime,
regime, coastal protection, fish-fauna prodoction, etc.

3. What does mangroves do?

4. •Mangroves give protection to the coastline and
minimise disasters due to cyclones and tsunami.
Recent studies have shown that mangroves store
more carbon dioxide than most other forests.
•Mangroves act as shock absorbers. They reduce
high tides and waves and help prevent soil
erosion.They also provide livelihood
opportunities to coastal communities.

5. •As mangroves were abundant in our barangay which is
Barangay Kodia. The officials and the associations
makes the benefits of mangroves into the next level,
that later gives rise to La Kodia Integrated Marine Eco-
park.

6. •Beyond protection from climate change, Barangay
Kodia’s mangroves have also been providing a
livelihood to the community through eco-tourism.
•This people’s organization is led by barangay
officials, associations, and community volunteers
who dedicate their effort and time to their
mangroves, which give them so much in return.

people who cut and gather the mangrove
trees for firewood.

a lot of visitors and tourist from all
over Bantayan Island.
