4. LITERACY
60% of children in the elementary
grades stop schooling.
NSO survey says that 1 in every 10
Filipinos aged between 10 and 64 cannot
read.
Two in every 10 Filipinos are
“functionally illiterate”
5. CHILD LABOUR
At the age of five or six, a child is usually
made to work to help his or her family.
Thera are children forced to prostitution
and subjected sexual abuse
One and a half million children are
estimated to roam the streets of the
country’s urban areas as itinerant peddler.
6. MORTALITY RATE
Or death rate is a measure of the number
of deaths (in general, or due to a specific
cause) in a particular population.
UNICEF said pneumonia and diarrhea are
the main cause of child deaths in the
Philippines, along with complications and
infections during the neonatal period or one
month after birth.
7. CONGENITAL DISORDERS
Also known as congenital disease,
birth defect or anomaly, is a condition
existing at or before birth regardless
of cause. Of these diseases, those
characterized by structural deformities
are termed "congenital anomalies"
and involve defects in a developing
fetus.
8. Primary congenital hypothyroidism (CH)
is a condition that affects the body’s
thyroid gland, a small organ in the lower neck.
People with CH are unable to produce enough
thyroid hormone, a chemical that is essential
for healthy growth and development. If left
untreated, CH can cause sluggishness, slow
growth, and learning delays. However, if
detected early and treatment is begun,
individuals with CH often can lead healthy
lives.
9. "Galactosemia is caused when a baby
cannot digest sugar found in milk. The
condition leads to cataracts, liver
damage, mental retardation and
usually death. Substituting a special
formula for milk starting in the first
weeks of life helps to avoid these
problems"
10. CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA CAH
‘Congenital’ means the condition is present at birth.
The adrenal glands are cone-shaped organs that sit
on top of each kidney. They make a number of
hormones necessary for healthy body function.
Hyperplasia means ‘overly large’. In people with
CAH, the adrenal glands cannot make enough of a
hormone called cortisol As they start working harder
in attempts to make more cortisol they increase in
size, resulting in hyperplasia.
11. Phenylketonuria (fen-ul-ke-toe-NU-re-uh)
also called PKU, is a rare inherited disorder that
causes an amino acid called phenylalanine to
build up in your body. PKU is caused by a
defect in the gene that helps create the enzyme
needed to break down phenylalanine.
For the rest of their lives, people with PKU —
babies, children and adults — need to follow a
diet that limits phenylalanine, which is found
mostly in foods that contain protein.
12. is a genetic disorder that occurs most often in males.
This condition mainly affects red blood cells, which
carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the
body. In affected individuals, a defect in an enzyme
called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase causes red
blood cells to break down prematurely. This destruction
of red blood cells is called hemolysis. Many people
with this disorder, however, never experience any signs
or symptoms.

13. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of
cure.” ― Benjamin Franklin
The Department of Health said that these
conditions could easily be detected if the infants
were submitted to new born screening test
required under the Republic Act 9288 or the
Newborn Screening law passed in 2004. This
newborn screening is a simple procedure to find
out if the baby has medical condition that can
result in mental retardation or even death if not
treated immediately. The screening is done
usually between 24 to 75 hours after birth.
