WHAT IS THE COMMON CORE
The Common Core State Standards is an
education initiative adopted by 45 states
(including CA) and is intended to define the
knowledge and skills in English language arts
(ELA) and math that all students will need for
success in college and 21st century jobs. It
seeks to bring all the different state curricula
into alignment. Writing is one of the
cornerstones of the Common Core and is going to
be incorporated in every subject – even PE!
There are some critics, but the Common Core is
coming to LVUSD. For more information visit:

Turkey Day Dash
The Conejo Valley YMCA is hosting its
9th Annual Turkey Day Dash on
Thanksgiving morning, 11/28/13. The 1k
family fun run/walk and 5k run/walk will
once again be held this year at Cal
Lutheran University. Race day
registration begins at 7:00 a.m. The 1k
starts at 8:00am and the 5K starts at
8:30am. Proceeds from the Dash benefit
Conejo Valley YMCA youth and senior
programs. Cost: $25 pre-registration,
$30 11/26-27 and $40 on race day.
Family rate: $60 (pre-registration), $70
11/26-27 and $90 on race day (immediate
family members only). Participants
receive a Turkey Day Dash YMCA t-shirt.

RECIPE CORNER
Butternut Squash Soup, yield: 2 quarts
ingredients: 3 Tbls. butter 2 Tbls. olive oil 3/4
cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped leeks, white
part only, cleaned 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp.
fresh sage, chopped 2-2 1/2 lbs. butternut
squash, peeled, seeded + cubed 2 small red
potatoes, peeled + cubed 1/8 cup sherry 4 cups
vegetable stock pinch of cayenne pepper salt +
pepper fresh croutons
instructions: • heat butter and olive oil in a
heavy pot over medium heat. • add onions and
leeks and saute until soft. add garlic and sage
and saute one minute. • add squash cubes and
potatoes and saute for 5 minutes. • add sherry,
broth, cayenne pepper. cover and simmer for 25
minutes. • meanwhile, make the croutons. cube
some left over french bread. add a little olive
oil to a large skillet and saute cubes about 10
minutes. add a little sea salt and set aside. •
puree soup in a blender and return to a heavy
duty pot. add some salt and pepper to taste and
warm slightly. • serve with croutons. –
