The Evidence of Unbound Loyalty in Oliver Twist
As young Oliver, ill–treated and hungry, approaches his masters saying "Please, sir, I want some
more" (Dickens 11), Charles Dickens enthralls his readers in the harsh, twisted journey of Oliver
Twist. Through a series of exciting events full of abuse, loyalty, hatred, and love, Dickens portrays
the overlooked difficulties of the poor, lower class that Oliver Twist's action–packed life has been
subject to. Some of Dickens most loved characters, including the adolescent pickpocket under the
pseudonym the Artful Dodger, the brutal Bill Sikes, devoted Nancy, and the criminal mastermind
Fagin, are all presented in his entrancing Oliver Twist. Dickens does a brilliant job of manipulating
his characters into acts of heinous crimes, life risking encounters, and joyous memories all the while
unfolding an unimaginable ending to his superb tale. Although Dickens presents many captivating
ideas, the focus of this particular monograph will concentrate on the unfailing loyalty of his
characters and how this faithfulness will lead to their benefit or downfall. Before delving too deep in
detail however, a brief summary must be presented.
Oliver is born an orphan into a workhouse in a quaint little town about 70 miles outside of London,
England. Oliver spends the first eight years of his life abused and neglected in a "child farm" ran by
the parish, and soon after is sent off to slave away

Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain
Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx is a heart twisting short story composed with a cozy style that
brings out clear symbolism in the brain of the pursuer. Even though it is just 28 pages long the short
story offered Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana source material that could be extended and to
expand upon the effectively made Midwestern reality. In 1963, two youthful men, Ennis del Mar
and Jack Twist, are enlisted for the midyear to care for sheep at an occasional touching range on the
anecdotal Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. Out of the blue, they structure a serious enthusiastic
and sexual connection; however need to go separate ways toward the end of the midyear.
Throughout the following twenty years, as their different lives play out with relational unions,
youngsters, and occupations, they keep rejoining for short contacts on outdoors trips in remote
settings.
One of Annie Proulx's most prominent concerns after listening to that her work was to be adjusted
was that the quintessence of her story wouldn't survive the creation process. Because of its gay
person substance, adding to the narrative of Brokeback Mountain was never going to be a
straightforward assignment, and the trouble of adjusting it for the screen was ... Show more content

By shooting the film in Alberta, Canada he finds himself able to outwardly pass on the subject of
"geographic determinism." Through the cinematography, he delineates a Midwestern world with
BIG mountains, persevering farmers, a focused domesticated animals industry, and rodeo as
stimulation. Lee uses the mountains, a known physical obstruction, to cut off this piece of the
United States from different ranges that are more dynamic and tolerating of the gay person way of
life, therefore allowing the gathering of people to have knowledge into the outlook of the characters
who were brought up in the

Essay On Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens is about a young orphan boy who leaves his orphanage to go to
London after years of mistreatment. Being an orphan since birth due to his mother's death and
father's absence, for the first nine years of his life, Oliver lives on what is referred to as a "baby
farm." However, at the age of nine he was moved from this "baby farm" to a workhouse by a man
named Mr. Bumble. This is shown on page seven when a woman name Mrs. Mann, who Oliver was
under the care of for the first nine years of his life, introduces Mr. Bumble to Oliver. This triggers
the event that will begin Oliver's journey. While working at the workhouse, the living conditions are
poor and the boys who work there eat small portions of what is referred to as gruel. One day, some
of the boys decide to draw lots, whoever losing having to ask for more gruel. Young Oliver Twist
loses and the task to ask for more falls to him. One line that this book is known for is then said by
Oliver here on page 11 "Please, sir, I want some more." This leads to an uproar that leads to the
workhouse attempting to get Oliver adopted to get him out of the way, beginning his journey. Five
pounds is offered to anyone who will take Oliver. After a close call where Oliver is nearly taken by a
cruel man named Mr. Gamfield, he is then adopted by a Mr. Sowerberry, an older gentleman. He
treats Oliver well and uses Oliver as a mourner at children's funerals. However, due to his unhappy
marriage, Mrs. Sowerberry

Examples Of Reversal Of Motive
2.2 Reversal of Motive
According to Worley the second type of twist is the "reversal of motive" (2014). The following part
will introduce what is meant with a motive–twist by means of two movies.
The first example is Gone Baby Gone, in which a child with a drug addict mother goes missing (cf.
Heerum 2010: 37). Two private detectives provide assistance with the on–going police investigation
in order to bring the truth to light. As the plot unfolds, it turns out that the kidnapping was only
faked and that the little girl is very well. The police captain is raising the child with his wife giving
her a happy alternative than living with her mother (cf. Heerum 2010: 38). This thriller has a very
concealed twist; the kidnapping case fabricated by the police captain definitely exceeds the viewers'
expectation as his real motive comes true.
A further movie with a very complex plot is Lucky Number Slevin. The main character, Slevin is
mistaken for somebody else, who owes debts to two mafia bosses. Lurking on the fringes of the
story an international assassin is hired by both bosses to kill Slevin after he delivers the money. In
the end it turns out that Slevin is out for reaching the men responsible for his parents death – and
kills the two bosses. He manages is with the help of the assassin, who ... Show more content on

Oliver Twist Dialectical Journal
Chapter 1 The arrival of Oliver Twist was quite a depressing one and it seemed rather shocking the
type of treatment women who were not married received. Unmarried pregnant women seem to be
treated like debris, left on the street. I hope to see that women are treated more equally in the later
chapters. Chapter 2: The conditions Oliver Twist was in raising up were simply horrifying. It is
utterly terrible that Oliver was constantly hungry during the when he was in Mrs. Mann's house and
I can not believe how greedy Mrs. Mann was to take money that was supposed to be for the children
and use it for herself. The working conditions Oliver went through were horrid and I hope they
change their policy and actually feed their hardworking employees instead of slowing starving. ...

I can not believe he is actually going through this robbery with Bill Sikes. If I was Oliver I would
have ran away from Bill and hide away to find Mr. Brownlow or go to the police to retrieve Mr.
Fang. Anyway I hope Oliver escapes Bill. Chapter 22: Oh the absolute pain poor little innocent
Oliver Twist must be feeling! Ouch I can not believe Oliver was just shot in the arm! I wonder what
went through his little head and how the pain felt when he got shot. I hope Oliver won't bleed out
and that they will free little Oliver and come to the conclusion that he's useless. Chapter 23: Wow oh
wow! Things are getting super spicy with the love life of Mr. Bumble. I have to say I am very
impressed that Mr. Bumble has time for such a scandalous relationship with Mrs. Corney. Yet it
seems as if Mrs. Corney is not totally in with Mr. Bumble as he is to her. Chapter 24: What a turn of
events! I am simply in despair and awe that we, the readers, got to go back to Sally, the nurse who
helped birthed Oliver. Wow I am so frustrated that Sally past away before she was telling us the final
words of Oliver's mother, now we may never know about the gold necklace. Chapter

A Good Man Is Hard to Find: Irony
"A Good Man is Hard to Find"
In the short story, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" there is irony all through the pages. It shows how
you should follow your gut instinct when you think you shouldn't go somewhere, when you know
something bad is going to happen. In the story it also talks about how the grandmother wore her nice
clothes in case of an accident, she wanted to look like a lady in case anything bad was to happen.
The grandmother was constantly talking about the good in people, but was she a good woman? The
first bit of irony the story throws at the reader is on the first page when the grandmother is talking
about how she doesn't want to go to Florida because that's where the Misfit is headed. As the
grandmother is trying to get her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You're one of my own children!" (O'Connor 293). After the grandmother said that she touched him
on the shoulder and the Misfit turned around and shot her three times in the chest.
This was a great short story for irony, because the grandmother was correct about most things. The
grandmother knew not to go towards Florida because The Misfit was headed that way after escaping
from the pen. She was right about dressing like a lady in case of an accident, because indeed there
was an accident, but she caused the accident by bringing her cat along without anyone knowing.
Then there is speak of a good man, is there any such thing? Red Sammy's wife wouldn't even think
of him as a good man, if your wife doesn't believe you are no one really can. The Misfit comes
along and talks to the grandmother for a while about good people, while doing so shoots her family
then her dead. '"She would have been a good woman," The Misfit said, "if it had been somebody
there to shoot her every minute of her life"' (O'Connor 293). This goes with my assumption that the
grandmother was just acting like a lady, and The Misfit even saw through her

How Did Charles Dickens Contradictions During The...
Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist was published in 1837 during the Victorian Era. The book was
written during a time of great advancements in medicine, technology, and science. These new
technologies along with the British imperial expansion led to a skyrocket in population and wealth.
The increase of people and wealth made Britain's poor even poorer, and resulted in distasteful
practices that led to the Victorian Era being known as a time of contradictions. Charles Dickens's
life and Oliver Twist symbolize the contradictions that were prevalent during the Victorian Era.
The Victorian Era was the time period during Queen Victoria's reign. The period lasted from 1837

Oliver, a small boy, is orphaned at a young age. He encounters many trials, and finds out that he is
the heir to a fortune. Oliver is thrown into the harsh environment of child labor, crime, and
corruption. He remains good–natured, despite the world around him telling him that he is bad. Many
characters in Oliver Twist symbolize the contradictions in the Victorian Era. The Artful Dodger, Jack
Dawkins, is a thief in Fagin's gang. He meets young Oliver early on in the story and introduces him
to Fagin. Jack then helps Oliver to become a thief only to fail and betray Oliver by leaving him to
take the fall. Jack symbolizes the young children who have to cut their childhood short and grow up
in order to provide for themselves. Oliver describes Jack "He was a snub–nosed, flat–browed,
common–faced boy enough; and as dirty a juvenile as one would wish to see; but he had about him
all the airs and manners of a man". Jack follows the idea that the poor are destined for crime and
ends up being caught and is punished. Bill Sikes is a vicious, cold, and brutal man. He is one of, if
not, the most brutal characters in Oliver Twist. Sikes represents the Victorian preconception of poor
people and criminals. Sikes kills the only one that ever shows him affection. He later accidentally or
intentionally hangs himself after being chased by a mob. Noah Claypole is met in the beginning of
the story. Noah physically

Book Review: Half Girlfriend By Chetan Bhagat
Book Review: Half Girlfriend
Half girlfriend – another novel by Chetan Bhagat is a simple yet heart touching. As with Chetan
Bhagat's other novels it's again a love story with an unpredictable twist in the end. The story
revolves around the protagonist– Madhav (poor Bihari boy) and his love Riya (Delhite). They like
each other. The boy wanted a relationship but the girl wasn't ready. The story throws some light
upon the existing problems in rural India too. From unpredictable twists to jaw dropping moments,
it has all of them.
The storyline is quite interesting. The plot is initially set in Delhi at St Stephens where both Madhav
and Riya join the college under sports quota. Both of them played basketball–their first point of
interaction. Riya ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though, the middle part of the plot where he was preparing to impress was extended and quite
boring but it didn't spoil the mood given the twist was around the corner. Other elements, like the
inferiority complex developed by Madhav due his inability to speak English properly and
subsequent overcoming and his desire to improve the schooling in the school and the vivid
description of the places, events and characters, made the novel appealing. The twist introduced
made the storyline amazing. The idea of dividing the novel in acts is well received too. Although the
story could be cut short where Madhav discovers Riya is alive.
By the title "Half Girlfriend", it suggests that it would be somewhere contrasting between a friend
and girlfriend or it could be close friends. However, the title "half girlfriend" simply gives a
misconception about the storyline. Half girlfriend was merely a term introduced in the story. The
only relevance was that the story revolved around Riya who was Madhav's half girlfriend but this
alone is not good enough a reason to name it "half girlfriend".
Summing it up, Chetan Bhagat once again has followed his typical love story line in this novel but
the plot has been excellently designed to interest everybody. The book is full of drama, love and
mystery. Though the usual wit and humour is absent yet Chetan Bhagat has definitely managed to
impress the

Masculinity & Brokeback Mountain Essay
The raison d'etre of the Western is arguably to celebrate masculinity, but Brokeback Mountain is a
revisionary Western that challenges definitions of masculinity. Discuss this statement with reference
to Jane Marie Gaines's and Charlotte Cornelia Herzog's comments on the homoeroticism of the
Western.
The Western genre is undoubtedly one that is governed by the traditional male 'hero' and its
masculine stereotypes. Rarely does the genre break away from this mould, however Ang Lee's
renowned film Brokeback Mountain defies the set expectations of the Western and its celebration of
masculinity. The film depicts the tragic love between the two central characters 'Ennis del Mar' and
'Jack Twist', set against the backdrop of the American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Noticeably, Jack Twist almost always wears these two colours throughout the entirety of the film.
Between the two male leads, Twist is most obviously more effeminate than the hard exterior
portrayed by del Mar's character. The introduction of Lureen shows her wearing vibrant scarlet
clothing or red lipstick. This is presented as a more masculine colour – illustrating Lureen as a
strong, independent woman. It is also observed that Lureen maintained the business and that her
father constantly questioned Jack's ability as a 'man'. The opening scene is significant, as it positions
the viewer to immediately understand the characterisations of each male lead and provides a glimpse
into the future development of their relationship. Stenning Edgecombe claims,
'From the different attitudes the camera had toward their bodies in the opening sequence, to the
economies of looks and talk between them, to their different sexual positions and experiences, this
act masculinised Ennis while feminised Jack' (2007)
The contrast between the two characters is most evident, and though there is no dialogue, their body
language highlights the different roles in which they play. Ennis leans against the trailer, hands
buried deep into his pockets, with his head bowed low. While Jack attends to his physical
appearance with shaving, while they both somewhat cautiously surveyed one

I will be analyzing the scene where Ennis tells Jack why they shouldn't live together in their own
ranch when Jack suggests that they can be together the whole time. Director Ang Lee uses cross–
cutting, sound, and soundtrack in this scene of Brokeback Mountain to show that people did not
accept homosexuals then, and they still don't accept them now. That is the reason why Ennis is
afraid of being together with Jack, and other people knowing about it. The director Ang Lee uses
cross–cutting to tell the story of Ennis. Jack tells Ennis that they can go and live together so they can
be together the whole time. Ennis tells him that it cannot happen. Ennis says "We are around each
other...in the wrong place... in the wrong time...Two guys living together. No way." Ennis is telling
the story of two old guys that lived together down home, and that they were the joke of the town.
Someone found one of the two guys dead. The director is showing Ennis telling the story and then it
cuts to show the flashback of when Ennis' dad takes his brother and him to see the guy's dead body.
While they show the flashback, they have the sound of Ennis narrating the story with a soundtrack
in the background that gives suspense and sadness. The director also uses tracking shots and hand–
held shots in the part where Ennis, his father, and his brother were walking

STORY COMMENTS
TERRATOO: RETURN TO EARTH (version 6) is a sci–fi, action thriller that explores the moral
argument about man's nature for war over man's desire for peace. This is exactly what the heroine is
forced to confront. She's a woman of peace, but her life is turned upside down when she has to
declare war on a worthy adversary.
Solid themes about destiny, revenge, and freedom drive the plot, as well as saving humanity.
The highlight of the story is the presences of two resilient females that go up against each other. One

The idea of him killing Angelique's mother makes him deadly and ruthless, but the dialogue hinders
the scene.
The idea of Chris attempting to open the "Joriah program" and later he does, unfortunately really
doesn't engage the audience. The audience, who doesn't know the twist, doesn't really understand
what he's doing.
One assumes this is how he learns about Beth, but one has to ask what is the purpose of Chris
knowing if nothing becomes of it. If it were the enemy who came upon the origins of her birth and
then used it against her one could see a possible reason for a scene like this. Chris knowing and not
telling her actually in some ways brings up more questions than answers. Either his snooping around
and unlocking the program should have a payoff, or it should be cut.
One way to make this a payoff is for Chris to blurt the truth out to Beth vs. Joriah. Beth doesn't
believe him and goes to Joriah who finally tells Beth the truth. This could add conflict for Chris and
Beth. She could also question why Chris cares for her – is it because she's different.

The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty
Picked mostly on a whim, I was kind of excited to watch this to trash talk it as what reviews I had
seen weren't very kind. But The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is actually really watchable. Of course it
isn't great, but it's certainly not the train wreck I was led to believe. Parts were actually scary, with a
bit of a silent hill vibe to them and while the ending is more than a little on the predictable side of
things. That in no way hampers the enjoy ability of watching it all play out.

Though I have a feeling that was kind of the point of the performance, it just doesn't play that well
of Natalie Hall and Bruce Davison's more serious and focus approach. India Eisley is also bland,
well right up until twist at the end when she actually does a fair amount of shinning.
My one of my two issue's with The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is that it's a bit to slow to get going.
Though once it got going it was great. My other being the predictability of what's going to happen.
Maybe I'm just jaded from seeing to many horror films over the years, but I saw the twist from
about the thirty minute mark.
Final thoughts, overall I really liked it. Was it a masterpiece? No, of course not as few films are. But
it was entertaining and I don't consider watching a complete waste of time. The visuals are nice, the
pacing is solid and it has a great dread location that is dripping with atmosphere. Would I
recommend it? Yes, I just recommend going into with an open mind and a six–pack.

First, I applaud the movie for daring to tell a story that nobody else presumed creating. Even in
2005, this was a pretty prohibited thing to discuss. To its credit, the movie follows the original story
fairly close, but a details were left out that made all the difference.
The short story Brokeback Mountain (1997) written by Annie Proulx received a lot of attention

They actually talk about it, how much better this is than with any woman. It shows them close, it
shows them getting personal, even discussing the possibility of running away together. The movie
did not discribe the emotional intimacy Jack and Ennis shared even before they had sex. Ennis's
emotional transformation in Jack's company appears in the book with the line, "Ennis, riding against
the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken light, thought he'd never had such a good
time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon." The deep friendship does not reveal in the
movie, the way the book does, which was the foundation for their love. (Walford, Compare/contrast
the book vs. the movie, ennisjack, 2006)
Alma take a quite big part in the short–story, because of Ennis and his importance. As I mentioned
before, Ennis is more well portrayed than Jack and this makes Ennis and Alma's relationship more
evident. "In December Ennis married Alma Beers and had her pregnant by mid–January." This
shows how Alma is mentioned only because of Ennis. Whereas Jack and Laureen's relationship in
the short–story is insignificant and unutterable. "I got a boy, said Jack. Eight months old. Tell you
what, I married a cute little old Texas girls down in Childress – Laureen." This is the only time Jack
mention Laureen, the others are Ennis trying to make him remember her. "You got your baby and

Brokeback Mountain is a short story written by Annie Proulx, which is about two strangers named

Metaphors In Brokeback Mountain
In Ang Lee's film Brokeback Mountain, two men, Ennis and Jack, cross paths and develop a
complex, taboo relationship that neither of them can explain. They lose their wives, children, and
ultimately feel as if they lose their own grasp of who they are as men while exploring their feelings
for each other. Nature and the surroundings of Ennis and Jack play a vital role in understanding the
mood of the situation and their feelings throughout the story. The story is primarily expressed
through its surroundings; this is how the emotions of the characters are expressed. Instead of being
straightforward, the nature is a more meaningful and effective way to illustrate their feelings. Annie

Lee incorporates the sound of wind to illustrate the metaphor of insecurity. The opening scene with
the truck driving through the hills includes several extreme long shots with a cold, dark atmosphere
and sharp, unwelcoming music and the sound of wind, which returns when Ennis is leaning against
his trailer moments later. These scenes foreshadow the events to come with Jack and the feelings of
lostness and insecurity that Ennis feels. In the scene after Jack and Ennis's first sexual encounter in
the tent, Ennis and Jack are horsing around in the field while Joe, their boss, watches them in
disgust. During this scene, the wind is loud and the trees shake, representing distress and negativity.
The wind is recurring and often is meant to express the feelings they can't explain with words. Ennis
feels as if his feelings for Jack are not accepted by society and therefore, by himself, either. When
Ennis goes to Jack's home to see his parents, the atmosphere in the house is extremely
unwelcoming. The surroundings represent the feelings of insecurity and being an outcast in the
home that Ennis feels. The cold, stark atmosphere of Jack's home illustrates the christian judgement
that Ennis and Jack feel from their families. Even in the beginning of the film, Ennis is leaning
against the trailer and there is a church steeple in the background, foreshadowing the judgement
from society. Ennis feels extremely cornered and insecure by Jack's father and their home. While
Ang Lee and Annie Proulx take slightly different angles to the story, they both find ways to portray

Brokeback Mountain Stereotypes
Cowboys define America. From rounding up cattle to hair–raising gunfight duels, the Wild West has
become one of the most recognized symbols of what it means to be a "true grit American." But what
happens when you mix this staunch, western culture with what traditional America believes to be its
toughest opponent: homosexuality? In Brokeback Mountain, Jack and Ennis embody the epitome of
the predictable American man: tough, masculine, and bold. As we expect them to saddle up and
charm all the pretty cow belles, the two men end up exploring their passion for one another and
ultimately fall in love. This tragic love story of two all–american cowboys completely redefines the
all too common stereotypes surrounding gay men. As James R. Keller and Anne Goodwyn Jones

Even after having this conversation and years following of a continued love affair, they never alter
their claim that they are "not queers." As Keller and Jones state in their journal, "One could argue
that Jack and Ennis are in love with each other partly because they are both in love with an idealized
western masculinity that fetishizes the outdoors and ascetic lifestyle." Although this is a valid
argument, I see more of a devoted bond between the two men because of a similar, undisclosed life
that both so uniquely share. The raw emotion in the film is laid out in a way that forces one to see
unrelenting love despite the need to label it. The fact that neither are able to adopt their sexuality
only furthers the initiative behind the film. Brokeback Mountain is the story of traditional American
men, who love in spite of their own masculinized expectations on cultural

Sixteen–year–old Callie and her twelve–year–old brother Jude went through several obstacles since
becoming foster kids. They were often separated from each other due to various reasons such as age
difference or simply most families looking to foster can only afford one child, they were also placed
in a few abusive households which was due to lack of care from those in charge of reviewing foster
parent's' applications. In one of the homes they were placed in Callie was put in a really difficult
situation which had a huge emotional toll on her that the trauma stuck with her for a few seasons.
Due to lack of love and affection from anyone in her life Callie fell victim to one of the sons in a
foster home she was placed in. Lucas the son manipulated her by giving her what she thought was
the love she craved although it involved verbal and physical abuse. He would be very controlling
and hit her and claim, "that is what love is" and Callie knew no better. It got to the extent where he
made her commit sexual acts against her will but at the time she didn't see anything wrong with it.
The son knew he would get away with it because if she told anyone being a foster child she would
be placed in juvey for committing sexual acts with a family member and be placed back in the
system. In another home Callie and Jude were placed in a home of two addicts who forced them to
do all the house chores. The father was never sober, and it was a very toxic household to live in. The
violence often escalated and even got to the point where they both almost lost their lives because the

The Twisty Twizzler is a new and exciting thrill ride that is coming to Hershey Park in 2017. It was
named after the how many twists it has on this ride, but also it was named by the Twizzler candy

adventurous or thrill seeker would be crazy not to come ride this ride. As you start ticking up the

While you are going up the first hill you will be traveling at a constant speed of 8 miles per hour.
The machine in the roller coaster has to use a certain amount of work to get the mass of the people
and cart up the first hill. Right before you start to spin down the first hill there will be gravity and
acceleration pulling you down the spinning hill. Once you stop spinning while going down that first
hill you will be at a spot right before the first hill where you will be experiencing terminal velocity.
After you finish that loop you are gonna get pushed right up another hill and as you are falling down
the hill you are gonna loop forward and be weightless while going through newton's 2nd law as you
near the bottom of the hill. You will start going up another hill like the one on Track A and twist
down in a corkscrew type way. During the twists you will experience very much centripetal force.
You will go around another little turn like you did on Track A then instantaneous speed will be
slowing you down right before you go back into the station.
The Twisty Twizzler is a very safe roller coaster. Even though it is throwing you around and
dropping you down hills no one will get injured while riding this ride. Every seat has a shoulder
harness that will clip on to buckle at the bottom of each seat so there is no way you can fall through
your seat. On this ride we use magnetic brakes to stop

Brokeback Mountain Psychology
Brokeback Mountain is a film that describes a tragedy surrounding forbidden love. The love is
between two men, Ennis and Jack and the setting is Wyoming for twenty years from the 1960's to
the 1980's. This was a time of conservative values that looked at homosexuality in a negative light.
These values caused Ennis and Jack to create a life that was what was expected in spite of what they
wanted. From this came a great deal of frustration and pain for the two men, their wives, and
families. The movie also related to a common issue of today's society and that is the continued
discrimination of the LGBT community. There are signs of change in modern society, but also much
needed work to be done to allow an individual to live a life with freedom to express their sexuality.
When the viewer looks at the film from a sociological perspective, the issue of societal norms is
seen and the abnormal relationship in a homosexual relationship is the focus. When you think of the
western part of the United States, the wild west comes to mind. Settlers moving across our country
during the 1800's to start a new life and look for adventure. With that comes the roles of the men and
women who were involved in the movement. Men were considered "real men", that were in charge
of their lives, law, women, and the land. These men conquered all that was put in front of them and
never backed away from what was put in front of them. Their sexuality was seen as a dominate male

Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain
Compared to Annie Proulx's short story, "Brokeback Mountain", Ang Lee's usage of additional
dialogue, scenery, and symbolism in the film more effectively presents the argument against
homophobia, underscoring the theme that everyone suffers when forced to deny their emotions. In
the short story, Proulx develops the theme during the fight scene between Jack and Ennis at the
trailhead parking lot. In the scene, Jack pleads to Ennis that they should travel to Mexico, but Ennis
is reluctant because he has to support his wife and children. In the midst of the argument, Ennis
states, "I got to say this to you one time, Jack, and I ain't foolin. What I don't know... all them things
I don't know could get you killed if I should come to know them" (Proulx 21). This line establishes
Ennis' pent up frustration and jealousy from repressing his emotions for Jack. Ennis is frustrated
because Jack does not understand his responsibilities at home and because Jack does not understand
how difficult Ennis' life compared to his. Additionally, Ennis is jealous ... Show more content on

At the end of the argument, Proulx writes, "Like vast clouds of steam from thermal springs in winter
the years of things unsaid and now unsayable–admissions, declarations, shames, guilts, fears–rose
around them" (Proulx 21). Proulx depicts the hopelessness of Jack and Ennis' relationship with a
simile of the surrounding nature. The vast clouds of steam that rise around the men represents the
sudden surge of emotion that takeover the men. The reference to winter foreshadows the inevitable
fall of their relationship, as winter typically "represents a time of hopelessness and despair" in
literature (Richards–Gustafson). Adding on, the "years of things unsaid and now unsayable"
solidifies the tragic fate of the men's relationship in how the men will never be able to say what they
wanted to say to each

Essay about Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain
Michael Warner states in his book The Trouble with Normal that "the [American] culture has
thousands of ways for people to govern the sex of others," that a certain regulation of sexuality and
desire can be designed "directly, through prohibition and regulation, and indirectly, by embracing
one identity or one set of tastes as though they were universally shared, or should be" (Warner 1).
According to Warner, the logical process that follows such a regulation ensures a certain shame
attaches to any "taste" that is not "universally shared." That this one "taste" "should be" shared
implies that it is not universal. The "taste" that must be converted in order to achieve a "universal"
desire is, then, naturally marked with a stigmatized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To embrace shame is to leave the hierarchies of power, placement and governance.
Proulx tells the story of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, two male cowboys in mid–western America
who meet as teenagers on a "Farm and Ranch Employment" (Proulx 256) operation on Brokeback
Mountain in Wyoming. That summer, herding sheep on the mountain, the two men form a romantic
relationship of sorts, one that lasts for the next twenty years of their lives and is anything but
unproblematic.
While telling the story of the men's experience of love and sex on Brokeback Mountain, Proulx
litters images of markedness on the situation, blemishing the relationship between Ennis and Jack.
In fact, the name recognition of the characters alone embodies a rather informative degree of stigma.
To name a character "Jack Twist" is to create an entity beginning normally–it starts with the very
common, run–of–the–mill name "Jack." To end that name with "Twist" is to directly change or
"mark" the commonness and normality that initiates the entity, with strong imagery of actual
twisting and distorting. Too, Ennis Del Mar (meaning, in Spanish, "island of the sea") is to create the
image of a colored piece in the midst of a constant, consistent blue form. In other words, Ennis Del
Mar, like an island in the sea, creates a blemish or mark.
The inconsistencies only begin in the names, however, for the two men are, physically in and of
themselves, stand–outs. Ennis, with "the ragged

Sexuality In Brokeback Mountain
Sexuality can affect not only behavior, but also ones role in a social structure. Jack Twist, a rodeo
cowboy, and Ennis Del Mar, in the movie Brokeback Mountain, encounter a sexual experience with
each other and are not positively sure on how to react to it. A rancher, Joe Aguirre, hired Jack and
Ennis as sheepherders, their work took place on Brokeback Mountain located in Wyoming. After
months of lonely work on this mountain, Jack and Ennis finally began to appreciate each other's
company. No matter how bad the weather got and how tired they were, their work continued and
eventually these two men, who were initially strangers to each other, formed a bond. It was a cold

It was time for them to part ways and end what they secretly had on Brokeback Mountain. A
question many people would ask is; why would they not continue to love each other and stay
together? The answer is social structure affected them. "Social structure is the relationship between
different entities or groups or as enduring and relatively stable patterns of relationship and
emphasizes the idea that society is grouped into structurally related groups or sets of roles, with
different functions, meanings or purposes."(Merton) In Ennis and Jacks society, they both played a
role of straight men that work for the American dream. Their secret relationship would not be
accepted in society, which is why they decided to say goodbye instead of continuing their love for
each other. As time went on, they both settled down and got married. Ennis married a woman named
Alma and had two daughters while Jack found a female rodeo rider. Years passed by and everything
seemed to be working out until one day Jack visited Ennis after about twenty years from when they
were together last. Alma saw Jack and Ennis greet each other with love and kissing. This shocked
Alma and put her in a situation not knowing how to handle it. Jack and Ennis continued to visit each
other and would take spontaneous trips to Brokeback Mountain to relive the old days. Jack was

Then eventually the hunt leads to Heineman but the audience knows most of the bad guys. Then the
twist about Harry is revealed early and so there's no major twist left.
Most of all, the audience spends a long time invested with John in tracking down the perpetrators,
only for the ending to be unresolved. This doesn't provide for a satisfying ending for the audience.
Granted, the story appears to be based or inspired by true events, but it's still most likely not going
to feel satisfying for the audience. They want to see the hero win on some level.
There's an obligated romance between John and Elaine. While Elaine presents as a smart and
intriguing character, as structured now the attraction doesn't feel authentic. It feels as if it's created
as an obligation for the film to include a romance rather than the relationship being genuine.
The other concern is that John feels a bit too generic as a character. He doesn't have a personality
that stands out. It's pivotal that that the audience relate with John as a hero. However, he's rather
depressing. He does learn to move on with his life and let go of his wife. As a detective, he remains
the same. He picks his career over his wife.
In contrast, Heineman is a smart and worthy foe and his background is certainly chilling. However,
he competes with a lot of other "bad guys" and so it's easy for him to get lost.
It seems that the story should focus more on the Harry vs. John

Closeted Love In Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain
Imagine yourself in a secluded place with just you and the person you love. Being together seems
thrilling and maybe even effortless. Adversely, for Jack and Ennis, the main characters in Annie
Proulx's "Brokeback Mountain" in The New Yorker, being together was nothing short of laborious.
For example, both Jack and Ennis would lie to their wives about where they would go, in consistent
efforts to continue meeting up to be together and have sex. Some of the remote places these
encounters occurred in were Brokeback Mountain and in a motel. Throughout the narrative, the
overall theme of closeted love is prominent. This is something that should be noted as a reader for

Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain
"Brokeback Mountain" by Annie Proulx has been known as the "gay cowboy" short story. The two
men, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, meet each other on the mountain where they are hired to do
sheep herding duties. Jack and Ennis enter the wilderness. The pairing of natural landscape and
freedom brings Ennis and Jack emotionally and physically closer together. One night, fueled by
whiskey, they begin a romantic relationship which can't last long later on. Jack and Ennis's
relationship thrives in the wilderness. Under the influence of the wilderness, they feel free to speak
about their respective family backgrounds and to move toward becoming whole themselves. Since
the moment Jack "unbuckled his belt, shoved his pants down", everything just goes wild. Readers
can feel the intensity of the scene, as Ennis appears overwhelmed with pleasure as well as shock,
confusion, and fear. Ennis states earlier that he has not yet had the chance to sin but he still knows
that the sexual encounter will require lubrication. Come to this point, as readers, we don't know
whether or not this is Ennis's first homosexual encounter. The romance between Ennis and Jack is
agreed as "private" business between two men, "nobody's business but ours" said Jack.

Escapism And The Fragile Illusion: Brokeback Mountain
The Escapism and the Fragile Illusion
When people talk about the movie Brokeback Mountain, the first impression associating with it
must be the homosexuality of the lead characters. As a phenomenal and controversial movie in
2005, it is an adoption of Annie Proulx's short story about the forbidden love between two cowboys
Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist under the background of the conservative Wyoming in the 1960s.
However, the Brokeback Mountain discusses concepts beyond romance, as Ang Lee, the director of
the movie, stresses, "Everyone has a Brokeback Mountain deep in mind". In his interpretation,
Brokeback mountain symbolizes a wonderland where people can completely withdraw from the
hardship of real life, which is enticing but unrealistic. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Brokeback Mountain Comparison
In the film Brokeback Mountain, Jake Gyllenhaal's character Jack Twist says in the film,
"Brokeback got us good, don't it?" This story and the motion picture tells us viewers about the
importance of following your heart and that true love can be forbidden according to certain
circumstances. Both the film and the story have similar yet different transformations throughout the
whole story on how both characters develop and also the importance of the setting of the Brokeback
Mountain and how it was the place that brought the two men together always.
To start off, first what the story is about. Set against the sweeping vistas of Wyoming and Texas, the
film tells the story of two young men, a ranch–hand Ennis Del Mar, played by the late actor Heath
Ledger and a rodeo cowboy Jack Twist, where in the film is played by actor Jake Gylllenhaal, who
meet in the summer of 1963, and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection, one whose
complications, joys, and tragedies provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. Both

Brokeback Mountain, both as a short story (Proulx, 1999), and film (Lee, 2005) explores the notion
that the use of various settings to develop issues and themes allow the audience to gain a grater

the force of desire that comes so naturally guides every significant action Ennis and Jack experience

Throughout both the film and the short story, significant settings help tell the audience about Jack
and Ennis' relationship. Proulx allows her characters to range far and wide, but there's always an
intense combination of beauty and loneliness wherever they go. Brokeback Mountain itself is
always defined by "the great flowery Meadows and the coursing, endless wind" (9), while the
"lavender sky emptied of colour and the chill air drained down" (23), but still when Jack and Ennis
first arrived, they where detached from the beauty and dwelling in their own loneliness. Just like
Brokeback Mountain, Ennis and Jacks love for one another is raw and beautiful, but also lonely, just
like the isolation experienced initially on the mountain. This is a place without a lot of people, and
even seems fairly indifferent to the presence of people. Brokeback Mountain was never revisited by
the characters, although it was always spoken about and planned to be revisited, suggesting that in
the end, it was a place of escape, a safe place that will always remained, in Jack and Ennis' mind
untouched and remains beautiful holding special memories. The use of Proulx's descriptive language

What Is The Purpose Of Jurry, And Executioner?
JUDGE, JURY, AND EXECUTIONER is a revenge thriller. The story centers on a grieving
detective and her investigation of a young woman's murder. The script is driven by the theme of
justice.
The initial goal is clear and the stakes are life and death. The script presents with some intriguing
and complex characters. The concept of investigating a murder and revenge is not new to the
industry, but it's a tried and true premise.
The tone is dramatic and the script offers an intriguing twist at the end. While the script definitely
features some solid elements, the script would also benefit from more development.
One of the first concerns to discuss is identifying the true protagonist. Initially, when the script
begins one thinks it's Amy story, but when she quickly killed, one thinks it's Danny story. However,
it's really Claire O'Brien's story. Consider introducing O'Brien before the murder.
The inciting event is the murder of Amy. It's nicely foreshadowed and adds some suspense. The
catalyst is the acquittal of Lee and then his murder. This propels the story forward.
The second act initially focuses on the investigation of Lee's death. However, in the third act, the
goal changes from investigating murder to the detective setting up the suspect and wanting him to
commit another murder.
In addition, the credibility of the events is questionable. First, the idea that they arrest Lee's mother
doesn't feel plausible. They have an anonymous witness and no physical evidence.

Cultural Traditions in Love Affairs
A story in which a conflictive relationship between two characters is featured is Annie Proulx's
''Brokeback Mountain' which takes place in a mountain in Wyoming, USA. The conflict between the
protagonists, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, arises from the unavoidable fact of having feelings for
each other, which represents opposing cultural traditions they grew up with. Ennis once told Jack
that ''There is no rein on this one. It scares the piss out a me.''(269) There is nothing that can destroy

In this essay I will be writing about how happiness to some extent can be achieved for the characters
within the film but how the majority of aspects to the narrative cause both Jack and Ennis to be
unhappy and how both are dually to blame for this. Despite some slight bursts of happiness within
the film I will also be mentioning that although the two men's desires working against each other to
make them unhappy, the fact that Ennis represents the expectations and fears of 1960's small town
American society – the ultimate cause for the pair barely having a chance at happiness and who and
what of each of the characters, situations and society is to blame.

Characterization Of Fagin In Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens
BAB I
INTRODUCTION
1. Victorian period
Victoria's long reign saw a growth in literature, especially in fiction, practiced notably by Dickens,
Thackeray, the Brontës, George Eliot, Trollope, James, and Hardy. Victorian is a term that is often
extended beyond the queen's reign (1837–1901) to include William IV's reign from 1830. Historian
distinguishes early, middle, and late Victorian England, corresponding to periods of growing pains,
of confidence in the 1850s, and of loss of consensus after 1880, a date which offers a convenient
division: Charles Dickens (1812–70), and Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) belonged to different ages.

The Wonderous Words of Charles Dickens Come to Life in the...
Charles Dickens is an infamous writer of wondrously worded and descriptive British Victorian
novels. Not only does he go above and beyond the call of a writer to descriptively transform worlds
around him into literary works of art, but he also has a way in which he is able to hide different
symbolic sentiments and objects that seem to pop up around each and every twist and turn he gives
us. Oliver Twist is no different. Charles Dickens cleverly centered the entire novel on "twists" and
objects that do just that; such as handkerchiefs, neckties and ropes. The handkerchief is an ongoing
symbol that has different significances that really pull the entire novel together. In Oliver Twist, the
handkerchief takes on its own meaning and symbol of brilliantly tying Oliver's world that is full of
twists and turns itself, all together. We are first introduced to the image or symbol of the
handkerchief when Oliver encounters Fagin and his mischievous group of young thieves. After
running away from his apprenticeship that he was treated poorly at, Oliver goes to the city of
London. There, Jack Dawkins – also known as the Artful Dodger – took pity on him and gave him
not only food and shelter, but a deal with the devil as well. Dawkins takes Oliver to Fagin (also
known as "the Jew"); the leader of a group of thieves, and this is where the handkerchief makes a
first and lasting impression. Dickens writes Oliver to be very observant and he notices the
handkerchiefs while he is taking in

Analysis Of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, And A Tale Of...
Oliver's Twisted Story In February of 1837, Charles Dickens's first installment of Oliver Twist was
published. These installments continued to be published monthly until April of 1839. London during
this time period was split almost directly down the middle, the upper class and the lower class, the
middle being almost nonexistent. In the nineteenth century, the English government was ran
adjacent with the church, although the harsh truth of lower class cruelty corrupts this image. The
country, despite its relationship with the church, did not run on the concept of Christianity but the
warped perceptions of the Bible and the desire for money. Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist
unknowingly sparked the social changes in nineteenth century London by exposing the harsh
conditions of the lower class through the life of an innocent child.
Charles Dickens, born February 7, 1812, wrote many classic novels including Oliver Twist, A
Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens grew up in a lower class family, because of that
his father, John Dickens, was arrested and put in jail for debt when Charles was twelve years old.
Soon after this, Dickens had to stop school and go into work at Warren's Blacking Factory, a shoe
polish factory (Cody). By the time his father was released and Dickens was able to leave the factory,
he had already suffered through many harsh conditions that affected him for the rest of his life. The

complicated mainframe to open a vault for a mysterious assailant. To raise the stakes, his family is

He's proactive with trying and failing. There's a nice twist with the reveal of the perpetrator and a
nice climax at the end except for the perpetrator strapping a bomb vest on an 8–year–old. This could
be highly disturbing to the audience. Even though the idea of the "other right" is skillfully set up,
there's a taboo about exploiting children and seeing an explosive vest on a child could dissuade a
producer.
With that said there are other areas worth discussing for possible revisions. However, even without
these possible revisions, the script feels marketable.
The first area worth discussing is the opening scene in central park and the hot dog cart. It's creative
and interesting choice, but highly unrealistic. When first read, one was not sure of the tone,
especially with the description of "processed guts and yumminess." A more realistic scene doesn't
involve a hot dog cart, but simply people strolling in the park, and perhaps some teens or a homeless
person find something like a box and it's a bomb. The idea of the bomber going to the trouble of
getting a hot dog cart is more for dramatic purposes than realistic.
The scene between Jackson and Wally on page 2 isn't the most engaging i.e. their dialogue. What
works is the subtext about "Life is chess. You better have a plan A, B, and C, or game over." On
page 28, again, their dialogue doesn't fully engage.
On page 3, a frantic officer tells them that there's an explosion in central park, and then on page 28,

Morally Ambiguous Character Essay
What are morally ambiguous characters? Characters that cannot be identified as purely evil or
purely good based upon their actions and behaviors. Nancy, in the novel Oliver Twist, represents the
perfect paradigm for a morally ambiguous character. As of the other characters, morality dissipated
as their selfish desires became high in demand. Charles Dickens, the author, depicted Nancy as a
prostitute, a product of her environment. Her dealings with a number of the wrong people leads to
her to indulge in criminal activity. Throughout the story Dickens reveals Nancy's unraveling internal
conflict with morality, ultimately leading her to help Oliver, whom she dies for trying to protect.
All the people Nancy surrounded herself with were corrupted. Bill Sikes, the man she loved and
stayed loyal to the most, was a common criminal. Fagin, Jack Dawkins, and Charles Bates were also
common criminals. The two younger boys, Jack Dawkins and Charles Bates were pocket–pickers,
who stole handkerchiefs and gave them to Fagin to resell. Bill Sikes, Nancy's lover, was a violent,
abusive, bilious, fastidious, mendacious miscreant who hectored all those ... Show more content on

Looking at her actions and behavior, there is a change. She went from a purely evil and corrupted
character, to a character full of morality, remorse, and sorrow. In many ways Nancy counteracted the
evil deeds she had done. Prime example, she assisted Sikes in the kidnapping of Oliver, however she
also aided in his protection. If she hadn't had a change of heart to do what was morally right, she
would have never defended Oliver against Fagin; met with Rose on the London Bridge whom she
shared vital information with about Monks; Oliver would have never gotten back to Mr. Brownlow
or seen the Maylies again; she would have never been brutally murdered by Sikes; she would not
have repented and prayed and been broken free of the heinous lifestyle she was forced to

Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain
Two boys kissing! Eww right? Reactions like these are one of the most controversial concerns in our
society, especially when it comes to cowboy culture. American cowboy's social construction won't
accept or tolerate such thing, mainly because of their macho type ways. In the book Brokeback
Mountain, Annie Proulx challenges the view of normal cowboy culture with the two main
characters, Jack and Ennis. Although Jack and Ennis see themselves and appear to be normal
cowboys, Proulx describes them as your not so typical cowboys. She uses them two as a way to
deconstruct that image society has on cowboy culture by having them fall in love. Normal American
cowboys are seen as badass, rough talking, dirty, strong, hard working men. Starting from ... Show

She implies they are these two badass cowboys who love each other, but unfortunately society wins,
which makes it complicated for them to move forward and be happy together. For example, When
Jack and Ennis were on their last get together, they were having a dispute about not seeing each
other as usual because of Ennis not being able to make time, Jack says to Ennis "You know, friend,
this is a goddamn bitch of a unsatisfactory situation." (Proulx40). Tension between the two rises,
their messed up situation of many years only pulls them away which adds up to Jack's frustration.
He adds "You're too much for me, Ennis, you son of a whoreson bitch. I wish I knew how to quit
you." (Proulx42). It leaves him thinking if those twenty years were worth the chances of getting
killed or physically hurt. That exact thought comes to mind when she adds the way Jack dies. It left
Ennis in complete disbelief, thinking the worst could have happen to him,the thought of him being
killed by the acts of homophobia indeed. Proulx obviously is giving contrast to see beyond the
image they lived, but also to see how harmful the construction of society affects others. Struggling
with love and happiness she has Jack killed leaving in question how exactly he died. Leaving poor
Ennis with thoughts of regrets and

The Evidence Of Unbound Loyalty

  • 1. The Evidence Of Unbound Loyalty Sam Carlton Allison Boswell English 30 September 2014 The Evidence of Unbound Loyalty in Oliver Twist As young Oliver, ill–treated and hungry, approaches his masters saying "Please, sir, I want some more" (Dickens 11), Charles Dickens enthralls his readers in the harsh, twisted journey of Oliver Twist. Through a series of exciting events full of abuse, loyalty, hatred, and love, Dickens portrays the overlooked difficulties of the poor, lower class that Oliver Twist's action–packed life has been subject to. Some of Dickens most loved characters, including the adolescent pickpocket under the pseudonym the Artful Dodger, the brutal Bill Sikes, devoted Nancy, and the criminal mastermind Fagin, are all presented in his entrancing Oliver Twist. Dickens does a brilliant job of manipulating his characters into acts of heinous crimes, life risking encounters, and joyous memories all the while unfolding an unimaginable ending to his superb tale. Although Dickens presents many captivating ideas, the focus of this particular monograph will concentrate on the unfailing loyalty of his characters and how this faithfulness will lead to their benefit or downfall. Before delving too deep in detail however, a brief summary must be presented. Oliver is born an orphan into a workhouse in a quaint little town about 70 miles outside of London, England. Oliver spends the first eight years of his life abused and neglected in a "child farm" ran by the parish, and soon after is sent off to slave away ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx is a heart twisting short story composed with a cozy style that brings out clear symbolism in the brain of the pursuer. Even though it is just 28 pages long the short story offered Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana source material that could be extended and to expand upon the effectively made Midwestern reality. In 1963, two youthful men, Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, are enlisted for the midyear to care for sheep at an occasional touching range on the anecdotal Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. Out of the blue, they structure a serious enthusiastic and sexual connection; however need to go separate ways toward the end of the midyear. Throughout the following twenty years, as their different lives play out with relational unions, youngsters, and occupations, they keep rejoining for short contacts on outdoors trips in remote settings. One of Annie Proulx's most prominent concerns after listening to that her work was to be adjusted was that the quintessence of her story wouldn't survive the creation process. Because of its gay person substance, adding to the narrative of Brokeback Mountain was never going to be a straightforward assignment, and the trouble of adjusting it for the screen was ... • 9. Essay On Oliver Twist Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens is about a young orphan boy who leaves his orphanage to go to London after years of mistreatment. Being an orphan since birth due to his mother's death and father's absence, for the first nine years of his life, Oliver lives on what is referred to as a "baby farm." However, at the age of nine he was moved from this "baby farm" to a workhouse by a man named Mr. Bumble. This is shown on page seven when a woman name Mrs. Mann, who Oliver was under the care of for the first nine years of his life, introduces Mr. Bumble to Oliver. This triggers the event that will begin Oliver's journey. While working at the workhouse, the living conditions are poor and the boys who work there eat small portions of what is referred to as gruel. One day, some of the boys decide to draw lots, whoever losing having to ask for more gruel. Young Oliver Twist loses and the task to ask for more falls to him. One line that this book is known for is then said by Oliver here on page 11 "Please, sir, I want some more." This leads to an uproar that leads to the workhouse attempting to get Oliver adopted to get him out of the way, beginning his journey. Five pounds is offered to anyone who will take Oliver. After a close call where Oliver is nearly taken by a cruel man named Mr. Gamfield, he is then adopted by a Mr. Sowerberry, an older gentleman. He treats Oliver well and uses Oliver as a mourner at children's funerals. However, due to his unhappy marriage, Mrs. Sowerberry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Examples Of Reversal Of Motive 2.2 Reversal of Motive According to Worley the second type of twist is the "reversal of motive" (2014). The following part will introduce what is meant with a motive–twist by means of two movies. The first example is Gone Baby Gone, in which a child with a drug addict mother goes missing (cf. Heerum 2010: 37). Two private detectives provide assistance with the on–going police investigation in order to bring the truth to light. As the plot unfolds, it turns out that the kidnapping was only faked and that the little girl is very well. The police captain is raising the child with his wife giving her a happy alternative than living with her mother (cf. Heerum 2010: 38). This thriller has a very concealed twist; the kidnapping case fabricated by the police captain definitely exceeds the viewers' expectation as his real motive comes true. A further movie with a very complex plot is Lucky Number Slevin. The main character, Slevin is mistaken for somebody else, who owes debts to two mafia bosses. Lurking on the fringes of the story an international assassin is hired by both bosses to kill Slevin after he delivers the money. In the end it turns out that Slevin is out for reaching the men responsible for his parents death – and kills the two bosses. He manages is with the help of the assassin, who ... Unmarried pregnant women seem to be treated like debris, left on the street. I hope to see that women are treated more equally in the later chapters. Chapter 2: The conditions Oliver Twist was in raising up were simply horrifying. It is utterly terrible that Oliver was constantly hungry during the when he was in Mrs. Mann's house and I can not believe how greedy Mrs. Mann was to take money that was supposed to be for the children and use it for herself. The book was written during a time of great advancements in medicine, technology, and science. These new technologies along with the British imperial expansion led to a skyrocket in population and wealth. The increase of people and wealth made Britain's poor even poorer, and resulted in distasteful practices that led to the Victorian Era being known as a time of contradictions. Charles Dickens's life and Oliver Twist symbolize the contradictions that were prevalent during the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era was the time period during Queen Victoria's reign. The Artful Dodger, Jack Dawkins, is a thief in Fagin's gang. He meets young Oliver early on in the story and introduces him to Fagin. As with Chetan Bhagat's other novels it's again a love story with an unpredictable twist in the end. The story revolves around the protagonist– Madhav (poor Bihari boy) and his love Riya (Delhite). They like each other. The boy wanted a relationship but the girl wasn't ready. The story throws some light upon the existing problems in rural India too. From unpredictable twists to jaw dropping moments, it has all of them. The storyline is quite interesting. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though, the middle part of the plot where he was preparing to impress was extended and quite boring but it didn't spoil the mood given the twist was around the corner. Other elements, like the inferiority complex developed by Madhav due his inability to speak English properly and subsequent overcoming and his desire to improve the schooling in the school and the vivid description of the places, events and characters, made the novel appealing. The twist introduced made the storyline amazing. The idea of dividing the novel in acts is well received too. Although the story could be cut short where Madhav discovers Riya is alive. By the title "Half Girlfriend", it suggests that it would be somewhere contrasting between a friend and girlfriend or it could be close friends. However, the title "half girlfriend" simply gives a misconception about the storyline. Half girlfriend was merely a term introduced in the story. The only relevance was that the story revolved around Riya who was Madhav's half girlfriend but this alone is not good enough a reason to name it "half girlfriend". Summing it up, Chetan Bhagat once again has followed his typical love story line in this novel but the plot has been excellently designed to interest everybody. The book is full of drama, love and mystery. Though the usual wit and humour is absent yet Chetan Bhagat has definitely managed to impress the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Masculinity & Brokeback Mountain Essay The raison d'etre of the Western is arguably to celebrate masculinity, but Brokeback Mountain is a revisionary Western that challenges definitions of masculinity. Discuss this statement with reference to Jane Marie Gaines's and Charlotte Cornelia Herzog's comments on the homoeroticism of the Western. The Western genre is undoubtedly one that is governed by the traditional male 'hero' and its masculine stereotypes. Rarely does the genre break away from this mould, however Ang Lee's renowned film Brokeback Mountain defies the set expectations of the Western and its celebration of masculinity. The film depicts the tragic love between the two central characters 'Ennis del Mar' and 'Jack Twist', set against the backdrop of the American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Noticeably, Jack Twist almost always wears these two colours throughout the entirety of the film. Between the two male leads, Twist is most obviously more effeminate than the hard exterior portrayed by del Mar's character. The introduction of Lureen shows her wearing vibrant scarlet clothing or red lipstick. This is presented as a more masculine colour – illustrating Lureen as a strong, independent woman. It is also observed that Lureen maintained the business and that her father constantly questioned Jack's ability as a 'man'. The opening scene is significant, as it positions the viewer to immediately understand the characterisations of each male lead and provides a glimpse into the future development of their relationship. Stenning Edgecombe claims, 'From the different attitudes the camera had toward their bodies in the opening sequence, to the economies of looks and talk between them, to their different sexual positions and experiences, this act masculinised Ennis while feminised Jack' (2007) The contrast between the two characters is most evident, and though there is no dialogue, their body language highlights the different roles in which they play. The movie is about two young men, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, that get a job taking care of sheeps during the summer on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. Ennis is engaged to Alma. They are getting married in the fall. Ennis wants to have his own ranch one day. Jack wants to become the greatest rodeo cowboy alive. Ennis and Jack become friends and later on they start going out. By the end of the summer, both of them go on their own way. Ennis married Alma, and they have two girls. Jack has a son with a cowgirl called Lureen whose father is wealthy because he has a business that sells ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I will be analyzing the scene where Ennis tells Jack why they shouldn't live together in their own ranch when Jack suggests that they can be together the whole time. Director Ang Lee uses cross– cutting, sound, and soundtrack in this scene of Brokeback Mountain to show that people did not accept homosexuals then, and they still don't accept them now. That is the reason why Ennis is afraid of being together with Jack, and other people knowing about it. The director Ang Lee uses cross–cutting to tell the story of Ennis. Jack tells Ennis that they can go and live together so they can be together the whole time. Ennis tells him that it cannot happen. Ennis says "We are around each other...in the wrong place... in the wrong time...Two guys living together. No way." Ennis is telling the story of two old guys that lived together down home, and that they were the joke of the town. Someone found one of the two guys dead. The director is showing Ennis telling the story and then it cuts to show the flashback of when Ennis' dad takes his brother and him to see the guy's dead body. While they show the flashback, they have the sound of Ennis narrating the story with a soundtrack in the background that gives suspense and sadness. The director also uses tracking shots and hand– held shots in the part where Ennis, his father, and his brother were walking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

STORY COMMENTS TERRATOO: RETURN TO EARTH (version 6) is a sci–fi, action thriller that explores the moral argument about man's nature for war over man's desire for peace. This is exactly what the heroine is forced to confront. She's a woman of peace, but her life is turned upside down when she has to declare war on a worthy adversary. Solid themes about destiny, revenge, and freedom drive the plot, as well as saving humanity. The highlight of the story is the presences of two resilient females that go up against each other. The idea of him killing Angelique's mother makes him deadly and ruthless, but the dialogue hinders the scene. The idea of Chris attempting to open the "Joriah program" and later he does, unfortunately really doesn't engage the audience. The audience, who doesn't know the twist, doesn't really understand what he's doing. One assumes this is how he learns about Beth, but one has to ask what is the purpose of Chris knowing if nothing becomes of it. If it were the enemy who came upon the origins of her birth and then used it against her one could see a possible reason for a scene like this. Chris knowing and not telling her actually in some ways brings up more questions than answers. Either his snooping around and unlocking the program should have a payoff, or it should be cut. One way to make this a payoff is for Chris to blurt the truth out to Beth vs. Joriah. Beth doesn't believe him and goes to Joriah who finally tells Beth the truth. This could add conflict for Chris and Beth. She could also question why Chris cares for her – is it because she's different. But The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is actually really watchable. Of course it isn't great, but it's certainly not the train wreck I was led to believe. Parts were actually scary, with a bit of a silent hill vibe to them and while the ending is more than a little on the predictable side of things. That in no way hampers the enjoy ability of watching it all play out. Thomas Kaiser (Ethan Peck) is an artist and a recluse with few friends. Since childhood he has had a reccurring dream with a sleeping woman, Briar Rose (India Eisley). Though he always awakens before he can kiss and wake her. My one of my two issue's with The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is that it's a bit to slow to get going. Though once it got going it was great. My other being the predictability of what's going to happen. Maybe I'm just jaded from seeing to many horror films over the years, but I saw the twist from about the thirty minute mark. Final thoughts, overall I really liked it. Was it a masterpiece? No, of course not as few films are. But it was entertaining and I don't consider watching a complete waste of time. The visuals are nice, the pacing is solid and it has a great dread location that is dripping with atmosphere. Would I recommend it? Even in 2005, this was a pretty prohibited thing to discuss. To its credit, the movie follows the original story fairly close, but a details were left out that made all the difference. The short story Brokeback Mountain (1997) written by Annie Proulx received a lot of attention when it was first published in the New Yorker. The story is about the relationship between Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, two cowboys who develop a forbidden love for each other and have to live separate lives. It shows them close, it shows them getting personal, even discussing the possibility of running away together. The movie did not discribe the emotional intimacy Jack and Ennis shared even before they had sex. Ennis's emotional transformation in Jack's company appears in the book with the line, "Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon." The deep friendship does not reveal in the movie, the way the book does, which was the foundation for their love. (Walford, Compare/contrast the book vs. the movie, ennisjack, 2006) Alma take a quite big part in the short–story, because of Ennis and his importance. As I mentioned before, Ennis is more well portrayed than Jack and this makes Ennis and Alma's relationship more evident. "In December Ennis married Alma Beers and had her pregnant by mid–January." This shows how Alma is mentioned only because of Ennis. Whereas Jack and Laureen's relationship in the short–story is insignificant and unutterable. "I got a boy, said Jack. Eight months old. They lose their wives, children, and ultimately feel as if they lose their own grasp of who they are as men while exploring their feelings for each other. Nature and the surroundings of Ennis and Jack play a vital role in understanding the mood of the situation and their feelings throughout the story. The story is primarily expressed through its surroundings; this is how the emotions of the characters are expressed. Instead of being straightforward, the nature is a more meaningful and effective way to illustrate their feelings. Annie Proulx, the author of the short story, uses metaphors and imagery ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lee incorporates the sound of wind to illustrate the metaphor of insecurity. The opening scene with the truck driving through the hills includes several extreme long shots with a cold, dark atmosphere and sharp, unwelcoming music and the sound of wind, which returns when Ennis is leaning against his trailer moments later. These scenes foreshadow the events to come with Jack and the feelings of lostness and insecurity that Ennis feels. In the scene after Jack and Ennis's first sexual encounter in the tent, Ennis and Jack are horsing around in the field while Joe, their boss, watches them in disgust. During this scene, the wind is loud and the trees shake, representing distress and negativity. The wind is recurring and often is meant to express the feelings they can't explain with words. Ennis feels as if his feelings for Jack are not accepted by society and therefore, by himself, either. When Ennis goes to Jack's home to see his parents, the atmosphere in the house is extremely unwelcoming. The surroundings represent the feelings of insecurity and being an outcast in the home that Ennis feels. The cold, stark atmosphere of Jack's home illustrates the christian judgement that Ennis and Jack feel from their families. Even in the beginning of the film, Ennis is leaning against the trailer and there is a church steeple in the background, foreshadowing the judgement from society. From rounding up cattle to hair–raising gunfight duels, the Wild West has become one of the most recognized symbols of what it means to be a "true grit American." But what happens when you mix this staunch, western culture with what traditional America believes to be its toughest opponent: homosexuality? In Brokeback Mountain, Jack and Ennis embody the epitome of the predictable American man: tough, masculine, and bold. As we expect them to saddle up and charm all the pretty cow belles, the two men end up exploring their passion for one another and ultimately fall in love. This tragic love story of two all–american cowboys completely redefines the all too common stereotypes surrounding gay men. As James R. Although this is a valid argument, I see more of a devoted bond between the two men because of a similar, undisclosed life that both so uniquely share. The raw emotion in the film is laid out in a way that forces one to see unrelenting love despite the need to label it. • 81. Brokeback Mountain Psychology Brokeback Mountain is a film that describes a tragedy surrounding forbidden love. The love is between two men, Ennis and Jack and the setting is Wyoming for twenty years from the 1960's to the 1980's. This was a time of conservative values that looked at homosexuality in a negative light. These values caused Ennis and Jack to create a life that was what was expected in spite of what they wanted. From this came a great deal of frustration and pain for the two men, their wives, and families. The movie also related to a common issue of today's society and that is the continued discrimination of the LGBT community. There are signs of change in modern society, but also much needed work to be done to allow an individual to live a life with freedom to express their sexuality. When the viewer looks at the film from a sociological perspective, the issue of societal norms is seen and the abnormal relationship in a homosexual relationship is the focus. When you think of the western part of the United States, the wild west comes to mind. Settlers moving across our country during the 1800's to start a new life and look for adventure. With that comes the roles of the men and women who were involved in the movement. Men were considered "real men", that were in charge of their lives, law, women, and the land. Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain Compared to Annie Proulx's short story, "Brokeback Mountain", Ang Lee's usage of additional dialogue, scenery, and symbolism in the film more effectively presents the argument against homophobia, underscoring the theme that everyone suffers when forced to deny their emotions. In the short story, Proulx develops the theme during the fight scene between Jack and Ennis at the trailhead parking lot. In the scene, Jack pleads to Ennis that they should travel to Mexico, but Ennis is reluctant because he has to support his wife and children. In the midst of the argument, Ennis states, "I got to say this to you one time, Jack, and I ain't foolin. What I don't know... all them things I don't know could get you killed if I should come to know them" (Proulx 21). Proulx depicts the hopelessness of Jack and Ennis' relationship with a simile of the surrounding nature. The vast clouds of steam that rise around the men represents the sudden surge of emotion that takeover the men. The reference to winter foreshadows the inevitable fall of their relationship, as winter typically "represents a time of hopelessness and despair" in literature (Richards–Gustafson). Essay about Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain Michael Warner states in his book The Trouble with Normal that "the [American] culture has thousands of ways for people to govern the sex of others," that a certain regulation of sexuality and desire can be designed "directly, through prohibition and regulation, and indirectly, by embracing one identity or one set of tastes as though they were universally shared, or should be" (Warner 1). According to Warner, the logical process that follows such a regulation ensures a certain shame attaches to any "taste" that is not "universally shared." That this one "taste" "should be" shared implies that it is not universal. The "taste" that must be converted in order to achieve a "universal" desire is, then, naturally marked with a stigmatized ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To embrace shame is to leave the hierarchies of power, placement and governance. Proulx tells the story of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, two male cowboys in mid–western America who meet as teenagers on a "Farm and Ranch Employment" (Proulx 256) operation on Brokeback Mountain in Wyoming. That summer, herding sheep on the mountain, the two men form a romantic relationship of sorts, one that lasts for the next twenty years of their lives and is anything but unproblematic. While telling the story of the men's experience of love and sex on Brokeback Mountain, Proulx litters images of markedness on the situation, blemishing the relationship between Ennis and Jack. In fact, the name recognition of the characters alone embodies a rather informative degree of stigma. To name a character "Jack Twist" is to create an entity beginning normally–it starts with the very common, run–of–the–mill name "Jack." To end that name with "Twist" is to directly change or "mark" the commonness and normality that initiates the entity, with strong imagery of actual twisting and distorting. Too, Ennis Del Mar (meaning, in Spanish, "island of the sea") is to create the image of a colored piece in the midst of a constant, consistent blue form. In other words, Ennis Del Mar, like an island in the sea, creates a blemish or mark. The inconsistencies only begin in the names, however, for the two men are, physically in and of themselves, stand–outs. Ennis, with "the ragged ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During next twenties years, Jack wishes to live a peaceful life ranching with Ennis as he is frustrated with the endurance of the scrupulousness; however, Ennis refuses to risk his life since he has witnessed a man killed by the locals for being "queer". For them, Brokeback mountain is a place where they can finally put the outside world aside. Similarly, Laura has also devoted herself to the glass menagerie as it is a facet of her colorful and childish dream. Laura is timid and incapable to socialize partially because of her defect; Ennis regards his homosexuality as a defect which he fears enormously being exposed. • 113. Brokeback Mountain Comparison In the film Brokeback Mountain, Jake Gyllenhaal's character Jack Twist says in the film, "Brokeback got us good, don't it?" This story and the motion picture tells us viewers about the importance of following your heart and that true love can be forbidden according to certain circumstances. Both the film and the story have similar yet different transformations throughout the whole story on how both characters develop and also the importance of the setting of the Brokeback Mountain and how it was the place that brought the two men together always. To start off, first what the story is about. Set against the sweeping vistas of Wyoming and Texas, the film tells the story of two young men, a ranch–hand Ennis Del Mar, played by the late actor Heath Ledger and a rodeo cowboy Jack Twist, where in the film is played by actor Jake Gylllenhaal, who meet in the summer of 1963, and unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection, one whose complications, joys, and tragedies provide a testament to the endurance and power of love. Both men were hired to work as sheepherders in the Wyoming Mountains. • 117. Brokeback Mountain Brokeback Mountain, both as a short story (Proulx, 1999), and film (Lee, 2005) explores the notion that the use of various settings to develop issues and themes allow the audience to gain a grater understanding of the characters. Just like the nature that controls the ranch and mountain lifestyle, the force of desire that comes so naturally guides every significant action Ennis and Jack experience in Brokeback Mountain, even when they know the specific actions are against their better judgment and against acceptable social dictums. From Proulx's strongly descriptive language, to (2005)'s use of various landscape shots, the audience is able to relate issues and themes to the characters. Throughout both the film and the short story, significant settings help tell the audience about Jack and Ennis' relationship. Proulx allows her characters to range far and wide, but there's always an intense combination of beauty and loneliness wherever they go. Brokeback Mountain itself is always defined by "the great flowery Meadows and the coursing, endless wind" (9), while the "lavender sky emptied of colour and the chill air drained down" (23), but still when Jack and Ennis first arrived, they where detached from the beauty and dwelling in their own loneliness. Just like Brokeback Mountain, Ennis and Jacks love for one another is raw and beautiful, but also lonely, just like the isolation experienced initially on the mountain. This is a place without a lot of people, and even seems fairly indifferent to the presence of people. Brokeback Mountain was never revisited by the characters, although it was always spoken about and planned to be revisited, suggesting that in the end, it was a place of escape, a safe place that will always remained, in Jack and Ennis' mind untouched and remains beautiful holding special memories. The use of Proulx's descriptive language of settings and Lee's (2005) panoramic landscape shots, allows the audience to gasp at the beauty of locations that the characters have visited, allowing the audience to connect to the location and events that are ... • 121. What Is The Purpose Of Jurry, And Executioner? JUDGE, JURY, AND EXECUTIONER is a revenge thriller. The story centers on a grieving detective and her investigation of a young woman's murder. The script is driven by the theme of justice. The initial goal is clear and the stakes are life and death. The script presents with some intriguing and complex characters. The concept of investigating a murder and revenge is not new to the industry, but it's a tried and true premise. The tone is dramatic and the script offers an intriguing twist at the end. While the script definitely features some solid elements, the script would also benefit from more development. One of the first concerns to discuss is identifying the true protagonist. Initially, when the script begins one thinks it's Amy story, but when she quickly killed, one thinks it's Danny story. However, it's really Claire O'Brien's story. Consider introducing O'Brien before the murder. The inciting event is the murder of Amy. It's nicely foreshadowed and adds some suspense. The catalyst is the acquittal of Lee and then his murder. This propels the story forward. The second act initially focuses on the investigation of Lee's death. However, in the third act, the goal changes from investigating murder to the detective setting up the suspect and wanting him to commit another murder. In addition, the credibility of the events is questionable. First, the idea that they arrest Lee's mother doesn't feel plausible. They have an anonymous witness and no physical evidence. ... • 125. Cultural Traditions Of Love Affairs : Annie Proulx 's '... Cultural Traditions in Love Affairs A story in which a conflictive relationship between two characters is featured is Annie Proulx's ''Brokeback Mountain' which takes place in a mountain in Wyoming, USA. The conflict between the protagonists, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, arises from the unavoidable fact of having feelings for each other, which represents opposing cultural traditions they grew up with. Ennis once told Jack that ''There is no rein on this one. It scares the piss out a me.''(269) There is nothing that can destroy the force of love but these two country boys get afraid of what society thinks and decide to keep it a secret. Most of the days spent in the mountain, Jack and Ennis talked about how their parents and family have shaped their behaviors and life. A common characteristic between the two protagonists is the life they had through childhood and adolescence. The boys understood each other when talking about the past and due to this fact they felt more connected during conversations. By telling past experiences they have never shared with somebody else brought feelings even closer to each conversation. One day, the boys started drinking, talking about their parents' beliefs and once the sun was down they were both drunk. Ennis decided to sleep outside because he had to ride out in the next morning and Jack slept in the tent. As the night was passing by, the climate was changing and it got very cold to the point that Jack heard Ennis teeth chatter. Jack woke up and said ''Ennis, quit hammerin' and get in here.''(259) The boys were in the tent sleeping during a very cold night, the climate was an opportunity for them to get closer. Jack took Ennis' hand and guides it inside waking up Ennis and realizing where his hand was. Ennis got to his knees, unbuckled his belt and Jack didn't turn him down. • 129. Brokeback Mountain Research Paper In this essay I will be writing about how happiness to some extent can be achieved for the characters within the film but how the majority of aspects to the narrative cause both Jack and Ennis to be unhappy and how both are dually to blame for this. Despite some slight bursts of happiness within the film I will also be mentioning that although the two men's desires working against each other to make them unhappy, the fact that Ennis represents the expectations and fears of 1960's small town American society – the ultimate cause for the pair barely having a chance at happiness and who and what of each of the characters, situations and society is to blame. When Jack goes back to Joe to find out about working for him the summer after Jack and Ennis met on Brokeback Mountain, Joe lets Jack know that he knew what they were up to on the mountain and that there wouldn't be any work for him at all, him or Ennis. Joe finding out about their relationship wasn't the only thing that happened, Alma also found out about Ennis and Jack. When the pair finally meet up again after a few years apart, they throw their arms around each other and bring their faces so close together and almost kiss out in plain sight when Ennis realises and throws Jack into a closed off space and kisses him so rough all the while, Alma is watching from the window overlooking the space where the pair are hiding and kissing. After two instances of people finding out about their secret relationship, of which Alma threatens to tell people about later in the film, Ennis cannot commit to Jack in fear of the relationship they have together, he says "this thing, it grabs hold of us again... at the wrong place... at the wrong time... and we're dead." An example of this is that a few years before Brokeback Mountain was made and released, there had been a killing of a young man called Matthew Shepard who had been beaten, tortured and left to die by the side of the road in such a remote area that when he was found there was no possible way he could ... • 133. Characterization Of Fagin In Oliver Twist By Charles Dickens BAB I INTRODUCTION 1. Victorian period Victoria's long reign saw a growth in literature, especially in fiction, practiced notably by Dickens, Thackeray, the Brontës, George Eliot, Trollope, James, and Hardy. Victorian is a term that is often extended beyond the queen's reign (1837–1901) to include William IV's reign from 1830. Historian distinguishes early, middle, and late Victorian England, corresponding to periods of growing pains, of confidence in the 1850s, and of loss of consensus after 1880, a date which offers a convenient division: Charles Dickens (1812–70), and Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) belonged to different ages. (Alexander, Michael. (2000). A history of English literature. London: Macmillan press LTD) Charles Dickens (February 7, 1812 until June 9, 1870) born in Portsmouth, and he moved to Chatham. He had no interest in the theory of fiction. The success ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main character in Oliver Twist Novel is Oliver Twist. Victorians stereotyped the Jews as avaricious gold worshippers, and in accordance with that stereotype, Fagin's eyes "glisten" as he takes out a "magnificent gold watch, sparkling with jewels. I like this novel because it tells a child's struggle against poverty, injustice, and social class. In Oliver Twist Novel, there are several interesting parts I can learn. The first interesting part is when Oliver becomes a troublemaker by asking for another food. I can see this by looking and reading the sentence "please sir I want some more". • 137. The Wonderous Words of Charles Dickens Come to Life in the... Charles Dickens is an infamous writer of wondrously worded and descriptive British Victorian novels. Not only does he go above and beyond the call of a writer to descriptively transform worlds around him into literary works of art, but he also has a way in which he is able to hide different symbolic sentiments and objects that seem to pop up around each and every twist and turn he gives us. Oliver Twist is no different. Charles Dickens cleverly centered the entire novel on "twists" and objects that do just that; such as handkerchiefs, neckties and ropes. The handkerchief is an ongoing symbol that has different significances that really pull the entire novel together. In Oliver Twist, the handkerchief takes on its own meaning and symbol of brilliantly tying Oliver's world that is full of twists and turns itself, all together. We are first introduced to the image or symbol of the handkerchief when Oliver encounters Fagin and his mischievous group of young thieves. After running away from his apprenticeship that he was treated poorly at, Oliver goes to the city of London. There, Jack Dawkins – also known as the Artful Dodger – took pity on him and gave him not only food and shelter, but a deal with the devil as well. Dawkins takes Oliver to Fagin (also known as "the Jew"); the leader of a group of thieves, and this is where the handkerchief makes a first and lasting impression. Dickens writes Oliver to be very observant and he notices the handkerchiefs while he is taking in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 141. Analysis Of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, And A Tale Of... Oliver's Twisted Story In February of 1837, Charles Dickens's first installment of Oliver Twist was published. These installments continued to be published monthly until April of 1839. London during this time period was split almost directly down the middle, the upper class and the lower class, the middle being almost nonexistent. In the nineteenth century, the English government was ran adjacent with the church, although the harsh truth of lower class cruelty corrupts this image. The country, despite its relationship with the church, did not run on the concept of Christianity but the warped perceptions of the Bible and the desire for money. Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist unknowingly sparked the social changes in nineteenth century London by exposing the harsh conditions of the lower class through the life of an innocent child. Charles Dickens, born February 7, 1812, wrote many classic novels including Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and A Tale of Two Cities. Dickens grew up in a lower class family, because of that his father, John Dickens, was arrested and put in jail for debt when Charles was twelve years old. Soon after this, Dickens had to stop school and go into work at Warren's Blacking Factory, a shoe polish factory (Cody). By the time his father was released and Dickens was able to leave the factory, he had already suffered through many harsh conditions that affected him for the rest of his life. The feeling of abandonment and betrayal he felt from that soon became ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of The Movie ' Hot Seat ' A former hacker is trapped in his office with his chair wired to explode if he stands up and in order to survive he must hack his way into a computer mainframe to open a vault for an unseen assailant. STORY COMMENTS HOT SEAT is a well written thriller that fully engages the audience. It's the type of script in which one feels as if they are watching the film. The plot is similar to the concepts used in SPEED and in the film PHONE BOOTH. In this story, the protagonist finds himself trapped in his office and forced to remain seated in a chair wired by a bomb. If he stands up, the bomb goes off. The hero is forced to hack his way into a complicated mainframe to open a vault for a mysterious assailant. To raise the stakes, his family is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He's proactive with trying and failing. There's a nice twist with the reveal of the perpetrator and a nice climax at the end except for the perpetrator strapping a bomb vest on an 8–year–old. This could be highly disturbing to the audience. Even though the idea of the "other right" is skillfully set up, there's a taboo about exploiting children and seeing an explosive vest on a child could dissuade a producer. With that said there are other areas worth discussing for possible revisions. However, even without these possible revisions, the script feels marketable. The first area worth discussing is the opening scene in central park and the hot dog cart. It's creative and interesting choice, but highly unrealistic. When first read, one was not sure of the tone, especially with the description of "processed guts and yumminess." A more realistic scene doesn't involve a hot dog cart, but simply people strolling in the park, and perhaps some teens or a homeless person find something like a box and it's a bomb. The idea of the bomber going to the trouble of getting a hot dog cart is more for dramatic purposes than realistic. The scene between Jackson and Wally on page 2 isn't the most engaging i.e. their dialogue. What works is the subtext about "Life is chess. You better have a plan A, B, and C, or game over." On page 28, again, their dialogue doesn't fully engage. On page 3, a frantic officer tells them that there's an explosion in central park, and then on page 28, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 149. Morally Ambiguous Character Essay What are morally ambiguous characters? Characters that cannot be identified as purely evil or purely good based upon their actions and behaviors. Nancy, in the novel Oliver Twist, represents the perfect paradigm for a morally ambiguous character. As of the other characters, morality dissipated as their selfish desires became high in demand. Charles Dickens, the author, depicted Nancy as a prostitute, a product of her environment. Her dealings with a number of the wrong people leads to her to indulge in criminal activity. Throughout the story Dickens reveals Nancy's unraveling internal conflict with morality, ultimately leading her to help Oliver, whom she dies for trying to protect. All the people Nancy surrounded herself with were corrupted. Bill Sikes, the man she loved and stayed loyal to the most, was a common criminal. Fagin, Jack Dawkins, and Charles Bates were also common criminals. The two younger boys, Jack Dawkins and Charles Bates were pocket–pickers, who stole handkerchiefs and gave them to Fagin to resell. If she hadn't had a change of heart to do what was morally right, she would have never defended Oliver against Fagin; met with Rose on the London Bridge whom she shared vital information with about Monks; Oliver would have never gotten back to Mr. Brownlow or seen the Maylies again; she would have never been brutally murdered by Sikes; she would not have repented and prayed and been broken free of the heinous lifestyle she was forced to ... American cowboy's social construction won't accept or tolerate such thing, mainly because of their macho type ways. In the book Brokeback Mountain, Annie Proulx challenges the view of normal cowboy culture with the two main characters, Jack and Ennis. Although Jack and Ennis see themselves and appear to be normal cowboys, Proulx describes them as your not so typical cowboys. She uses them two as a way to deconstruct that image society has on cowboy culture by having them fall in love. Normal American cowboys are seen as badass, rough talking, dirty, strong, hard working men. Starting from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She implies they are these two badass cowboys who love each other, but unfortunately society wins, which makes it complicated for them to move forward and be happy together. For example, When Jack and Ennis were on their last get together, they were having a dispute about not seeing each other as usual because of Ennis not being able to make time, Jack says to Ennis "You know, friend, this is a goddamn bitch of a unsatisfactory situation." (Proulx40). Tension between the two rises, their messed up situation of many years only pulls them away which adds up to Jack's frustration. He adds "You're too much for me, Ennis, you son of a whoreson bitch. I wish I knew how to quit you." (Proulx42). It leaves him thinking if those twenty years were worth the chances of getting killed or physically hurt. That exact thought comes to mind when she adds the way Jack dies. It left Ennis in complete disbelief, thinking the worst could have happen to him,the thought of him being killed by the acts of homophobia indeed.
